Profiling the Physical Performance of Young Boxers with Unsupervised Machine Learning: A Cross-Sectional Study

Mexico City is the location with the largest number of boxers in Mexico; in fact, it is the first city in the country to open a Technological Baccalaureate in Education and Sports Promotion with a pugilism orientation. This cross-sectional study aimed to determine the physical-functional profile of applicants for admission to the baccalaureate in sports. A total of 227 young athletes (44F; 183M; 15.65 (1.79) years; 63.66 (14.98) kg; >3 years of boxing experience) participated in this study. Body mass (BM), maximal isometric handgrip (HG) strength, the height of the countermovement jump (CMJ), the velocity of straight boxing punches (PV), and the rear hand punch impact force (PIF) were measured. The young boxers were profiled using unsupervised machine learning algorithms, and the probability of superiority (ρ) was calculated as the effect size of the differences. K-Medoids clustering resulted in two sex-independent significantly different groups: Profile 1 (n = 118) and Profile 2 (n = 109). Except for BM, Profile 2 was statistically higher (p < 0.001) with a clear distinction in terms of superiority on PIF (ρ = 0.118), the PIF-to-BM ratio (ρ = 0.017), the PIF-to-HG ratio (ρ = 0.079) and the PIF-to-BM+HG ratio (ρ = 0.008). In general, strength levels explained most of the data variation; therefore, it is reasonable to recommend the implementation of tests aimed at assessing the levels of isometric and applied strength in boxing gestures. The identification of these physical-functional profiles might help to differentiate training programs during sports specialization of young boxing athletes.

Rapid Weight Loss of Up to Five Percent of the Body Mass in Less Than 7 Days Does Not Affect Physical Performance in Official Olympic Combat Athletes With Weight Classes: A Systematic Review With Meta-Analysis

Given the relevance of the effects that weight loss can generate on the physical performance in athletes, this study performed a systematic review with meta-analysis of the published literature on rapid weight loss (RWL) and examined its impact on the physical performance in Official Olympic combat sports athletes. The “Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis” (PRISMA) guidelines were followed to ensure an ethical and complete reporting of the findings. PubMed, SPORT Discus, and EBSCO were the electronic databases explored for article retrieval and selection. The following string was applied: “RWL” OR “weight loss” OR “weight reduction” AND “judo” OR “wrestling” or “taekwondo” or “boxing” AND “performance.” Based on the quality analysis, conducted according to the “Tool for the assessment of study quality and reporting in exercise training studies” (TESTEX), ten articles achieved a score >6 points. The meta-analysis showed a significant difference in pre- vs. post-weight loss (p = 0.003) and no effects in pre- vs. post-power and strength performance analysis (p > 0.05 for both results). Based on our systematic review and meta-analysis of the literature, RWL up to ≤5% of the body mass in less than 7 days does not influence performance outcomes in Official Olympic combat athletes with weight classes, considering the strength and power measures.

Listeria Monocytogenes: an uncommon pathogen of cervical necrotizing fasciitis

The aim of this paper is to present a unique case of neck-necrotizing fasciitis caused by Listeria Monocytogenes in a young woman, successfully treated by surgery and IV antibiotic therapy. Necrotizing fasciitis is a rare, rapidly progressing and potentially life-threatening infection that infrequently occurs in the head and neck region. Pathogens involved in necrotizing fasciitis are heterogeneous and include aerobic and anaerobic bacteria. To the best of our knowledge, this is the only case of neck necrotizing fasciitis caused by Listeria Monocytogenes studied in literature so far.

Parotid gland carcinoma: 1987 and 1997 UICC T classifications compared for prognostic accuracy at 5 years

In order to compare the correlation of 1987 and 1997 UICC T categories with the survival rate in parotid gland carcinoma, 134 patients attending the ENT clinics at the University of Ferrara (from 1970 and 1993) and Firenze (from 1970 to 1990) were analyzed by means of survival analyses (Kaplan-Meier and Cox algorithms). This study demonstrated that both systems showed a significant correlation with the survival rate, but T 1997 resulted in a more reliable prognostic value by means of a higher odds ratio. We conclude that the newer (1997) UICC T category better defines the prognosis for cancer of the parotid gland and should have a higher impact on the clinical evaluation of patients.

Cervical necrotizing fasciitis

Necrotizing fasciitis is a severe soft tissue infection that results in necrosis of the fasciae and subcutaneous tissues; the infection can quickly prove fatal. Although involvement of the head and neck is rare, causes are usually odontogenic or pharyngeal but can also be insect bites, local trauma, burns or surgery. We present a clinical case of a 31-year-old Italian woman with cervical necrotizing fasciitis having an uncommon presentation. While under treatment, the patient's husband was admitted for necrotizing fasciitis of the medial fasciae of his left leg subsequent to an insect sting. The causes, diagnosis and treatment of necrotizing fasciitis are reviewed.

[The problem of lymph nodes in malignant epithelial tumors of the parotid gland]

Cervical lymph-node treatment in parotid gland epithelial malignancies is still debated. According to Literature, three different strategies (surgery, radiotherapy, "wait and see") have all been proposed theoretically, particularly when dealing with N0 cases. The present study was designed to evaluate the results of different lymphonode treatment strategies in 57 parotid gland carcinomas followed at the ENT Clinic of the University of Ferrara. The most frequent hystological patterns appeared to be the adenoidcystic carcinoma (33.3%) and the mucoepidermoid tumor (21.1%). Total parotidectomy was the treatment of choice in all cases. Ipsilateral neck dissection was performed in 14 cases (24.5%), 5 cases being N0. In 27 patients (47.4%) postsurgical radiotherapy was applied: in 7 cases on T and in 20 on both T and N.T recurrences were 7, while those of N and of both T and N were respectively 2 and 2. No occult metastases were found in N0 dissected patients. The results obtained led the Authors to the following conclusions: -neck dissection is fundamental in treatment of clinical adenopathies in any parotid gland malignancy: -postsurgical radiotherapy on the neck is the treatment of choice in all N0 carcinomas except in cases of acinic cell and mucoepidermoid carcinomas, where a "wait and see" policy seems to be more suitable.

[Otorhinolaryngologic surgery in patients with coagulopathy]

A personal experience of ORL surgery in patients suffering from bleeding disorders is presented. 26 patients have been submitted to different surgical procedures, fibrin glue being used in all of them. Treatment results were as satisfactory as those in normal patients.

[Clinical and biological considerations on adenocystic carcinoma of the head]

The purpose of the present work was to define some aspects (i.e. the influence of histological grading on prognosis and the possibility of an eventual hormone dependency) of adenoidocystic carcinoma, a highly controversial form of carcinoma still open to debate. A study is thus reported of 33 cases of adenoidocystic carcinoma of the head and neck seen from 1965-1985 at the E.N.T. Clinic of Ferrara. The individual histological samples were seen over a period of time by a single histopathologist who was not informed as to the patients' clinical progression. In this manner the diagnostic criteria was kept constant. Tumoral grading was then performed on the basis of the Marsh and Allen classification. The overall actuarial survival curves are presented according to site and grading. Besides confirming the already known data regarding the decrease in survival rate well beyond the fifth year, local recurrences and the frequency of lymph node and secondary metastases, the results indicate a direct relationship between grading and prognosis. In fact, overall survival decreases for the less differentiated forms while the frequency of local recurrences increases as does that of lymph node and systemic metastases. Furthermore, in 63.3% of the female patients a genital hormone dependent pathology was noted prior to the appearance of a salivary gland tumor. These observations would suggest that hormones may play a role in the genesis of adenoidocystic carcinoma.
