Abstract
Cancer is a devastating disease that has significant psychological and biological impacts. Generally, lung cancer primarily affects men while breast cancer primarily affects women. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the levels of anxiety and depression in patients with these prevalent cancer types, as well as their perceptions of the illness and any potential connections between them. The study included a total of 252 participants, consisting of 110 breast cancer patients, 112 lung cancer patients, and 30 healthy individuals as controls. The Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) were administered to assess mood, while the Illness Perception Questionnaire (IPQ) was used to evaluate cancer perceptions. Results revealed that both breast cancer and lung cancer patients had significantly higher BDI and BAI scores compared to the control group. Furthermore, the BDI and BAI scores were lower in breast cancer patients compared to lung cancer patients. The IPQ causal representation-immunity score was significantly higher in lung cancer patients than in breast cancer patients (p = 0.01). Positive correlations were found between BDI scores and BAI scores, as well as between BDI scores and certain subscale scores of the IPQ related to illness representation and causal representation. Additionally, a positive correlation was observed between BAI scores and the IPQ illness representation-timeline acute/chronic subscale, while a negative correlation was found between BAI scores and the IPQ causal representation-accident or chance scores. Overall, the study findings demonstrated that breast and lung cancer patients possess negative perceptions of their disease and experience high levels of anxiety and depression. To enhance the quality of life and promote resilience in these patients, it is recommended to incorporate psychological interventions that consider anxiety, depression, and disease perception.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: This study aimed to examine the function of various inflammation parameters and their interactions in the pathology of Bipolar disorder (BD) and to assess whether they could be biomarkers in the relationship between criminal behavior and BD. Materials and Methods: Overall, 1029 participants, including 343 patients with BD who have committed offenses, 343 nonoffending patients with BD, and 343 healthy controls, were included in this retrospective study. Neutrophil, lymphocyte, monocyte, and platelet counts; high-density lipoprotein (HDL-c) levels; systemic immune-inflammatory index (SII), systemic inflammatory response index (SIRI), neutrophil to high-density lipoprotein ratio (NHR), lymphocyte to high-density lipoprotein ratio (LHR), monocyte to high-density lipoprotein ratio (MHR), platelet to high-density lipoprotein ratio (PHR) were measured. Results: Significant differences were observed between the groups in terms of SII, SIRI, NHR, LHR, MHR, PHR, neutrophil, and monocyte values (p < 0.001). The lymphocyte counts were significantly higher in the patients with BD who committed offenses (p = 0.04). The platelet counts were significantly lower in the patients with BD who committed offenses compared to nonoffending patients with BD (p = 0.015). The HDL-c levels were significantly lower in the patients with BD who have committed offenses than those of nonoffending patients with BD (p < 0.001). Bipolar disorder, not receiving active psychiatric treatment, having a diagnosis of bipolar manic episodes, and having low platelet and HDL values constitute a risk of involvement in crime. Conclusions: The present study emphasizes the role of systemic inflammation in the pathophysiology of patients with BD with and without criminal offenses and the relationship between inflammation and criminal behavior.

Abstract
AIM To examine subfatin, preptin and betatrophin levels in plasma and aqueous in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) (with and without retinopathy). MATERIAL AND METHOD Sixty patients, who were similar in terms of age and gender, and were scheduled for operation due to cataract, were included in the study. The patients were divided into three groups as Group C (20 weeks without diabetes and comorbidity), Group DM (20 patients with DM but no retinopathy) and Group DR (20 patients with diabetic retinopathy). The preoperative body mass index (BMI), fasting plasma glucose, HbA1c, lipid profile levels of all patients in the groups were examined. Blood samples were also taken for plasma subfatin, preptin and betatrophin levels. At the beginning of the cataract surgery, 0.1 ml of aqueous fluid was taken from the anterior chamber. Plasma and aqueous subfatin, preptin and betatrophin levels were analyzed by ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays) method. RESULTS In our study results, there was a significant difference in BMI, fasting plasma glucose and hemoglobin A1c levels (p < 0.05 for all parameters). Plasma and aqueous subfatin levels were higher in Group DR compared to Group C (p < 0.001, p = 0.036, respectively). Plasma and aqueous preptin levels were higher in group DR and group DM than in group C (p = 0.001, p = 0.002, p < 0.001, p = 0.001, respectively). Plasma and aqueous betatrophin levels were higher in Group DR compared to group C (p = 0.001, p = 0.010, respectively). CONCLUSION Subfatin, preptin and betatrophin molecules may have an important role in the pathogenesis of diabetic retinopathy.

Abstract
Toxic doses of formaldehyde (FA) can cause oxidative damage and impair energy metabolism. Asprosin (ASP) and subfatin (SUB) are adipokines produced by adipose tissue that help regulate energy metabolism. We investigated the effects of carvacrol (CAR), an antioxidant with hepatoprotective properties, on ASP and SUB in rats exposed to FA using immunohistochemistry and biochemistry. We used 42 male Wistar albino rats divided into six groups of seven: group 1, untreated control; group 2, FA (10 ppm FA by inhalation 8 h/day, 5 days/week); group 3, CAR-20 (20 mg/kg); group 4, CAR-40; group 5, FA (10 ppm FA by inhalation 8 h/day, 5 days/week) + CAR-20 (20 mg/kg); group 6, FA (10 ppm FA by inhalation 8 h/day, 5 days/week) + CAR-40 (40 mg/kg). Levels of ASP and SUB, and total oxidant status (TOS) and total antioxidant status (TAS) in blood and liver tissue were measured using ELISA. ASP and SUB immunoreactivity was assessed using immunohistochemistry. The number of apoptotic cells was determined using the TUNEL method. The number of apoptotic cells in group 2 was increased compared to group 1. TOS in group 2 was increased compared to group 1. The numbers of apoptotic cells and TOS in group 3 were decreased compared to group 1. TOS was decreased in group 6 compared to group 2, but TOS was increased compared to group 1. We found ASP and SUB immunoreactivity in the liver. All alterations were reversed by addition of CAR. It appears that FA disrupts energy metabolism and CAR ameliorates the destructive effects of FA when used at appropriate doses, although CAR might be harmful at high doses.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The aim of the study was to investigate the relationship between lumbar disc herniation and Goutallier classification (GC), lumbar indentation value, and subcutaneous adipose tissue thickness. METHODS 102 consecutive patients (59 female and 43 male) with lumbar back pain, numbness, tingling, or pain in the lower extremity indicating radiculopathy who had undergone lumbar magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and had an intervertebral disc herniation in the L4-5 level, were included in the study. 102 patients who have undergone lumbar MRI in the same time period and have no disc herniation were chosen to be the control group and were selected so as to match the herniated group for sex and age. All these patients' scans were re-interpreted regarding paraspinal muscle atrophy (using the GC), lumbar indentation value, and subcutaneous adipose tissue thickness in the L4-5 level. RESULTS The Goutallier score was higher in the herniated group, compared with the non-herniated group (p < 0.001). There was no statistical difference between herniated and non-herniated groups regarding lumbar indentation value (LIV) and subcutaneous adipose tissue thickness (SATT). A Goutallier score of 1.5 provided the highest sensitivity x specificity value to indicate the disc herniation according to the statistical results. The individuals with a Goutallier score of 2, 3, and 4 have 2.87 times more likely to have disc herniation in their MRIs than the ones with a score of 0 and 1. CONCLUSION Paraspinal muscle atrophy seems to be related to the presence of disc herniations. The cut-off value of GC to indicate the disc herniation in this study might be useful to predict the risk for disc herniation regarding the Goutallier score. The LIV and SATT measured in magnetic resonance images were randomly distributed between individuals with herniated and non-herniated groups, and statistically, no relationship was observed between these groups regarding these parameters. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE The effect of the parameters studied in this research on disc herniations are expected to be an added value to the literature. The awareness of risk factors for intervertebral disc herniations might be used in preventive medicine to predict the risk and understand the tendency of an individual for disc herniations to occur in the future. Further investigations are needed to establish whether there is a causal relationship or correlation between these parameters and disc herniation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Cervical Inlet Patch (CIP) is an interesting entity that is little known and often neglected by endoscopists. It has always been reported as less than expected. In this article, for the first time in the literature, we want to measure the true prevalence of CIP in a center dealing with specific esophageal diseases. PATIENTS AND METHODS From October 2020 to October 2021, a total of 283 patients, aged 15-95 years, with mainly dyspeptic and reflux-like complaints were included in this study. All endoscopic procedures were performed carefully by a single endoscopist. Patients were examined for any possible presence of CIP, with adequate sedation and time. RESULTS The prevalence of CIP, which was the primary aim of our study, was detected at a rate of 14.8%. Most CIP was observed as a single lesion (73.8%), and many of them (45.2%) were larger than 10 mm. Plenty of patients had upper endoscopy due to dyspeptic complaints, but only 2.5% of them presented with a preliminary diagnosis of laryngeal reflux. CONCLUSIONS The true CIP prevalence is higher than reported before. Our result is the highest prevalence rate of CIP was detected in Turkey. In this regard, data coming from centers dealing with specific esophageal diseases may be more reliable and true.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Recurrent wheezing is common in young children, with a cumulative prevalence of up to 40 % in the first 6 years of life. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the relationship between the number of wheezing episodes and the number of cigarettes smoked at home and serum / saliva cotinine and carnosine levels in children with recurrent wheezing. METHODS This study was conducted with 80 young children with recurrent wheezing, aged between 1-4 years and 50 healthy control groups. Patient population was divided into three groups depending on the number of their exposure to cigarette smoke and wheezing attacks. Serum cotinine, saliva cotinine, serum carnosine, saliva carnosine, vitamin D levels were measured by using the ELISA method. RESULTS A significant relationship for serum cotinine and saliva cotinine levels was found between groups (p < 0.05). It was determined that as the number of exposure to cigarette smoke and number of wheezing episodes in young children with recurrent wheezing increased, the level of serum/saliva cotinine levels increased significantly, compared to the control group. In contrast, it was determined that as the number of exposure to cigarette smoke and number of wheezing episodes in young children with recurrent wheezing increased, serum/saliva carnosine levels decreased significantly, compared to the control group. In addition, a significant difference in serum vitamin D levels was found between healthy young children and young children with recurrent wheezing (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS We think that the measurement of salivary cotinine is a useful and noninvasive marker to evaluate passive smoking exposure in the etiology of recurrent wheezing in young children.

Abstract
Introduction Attention deficit hyperactivity (ADHD) disorder is a common childhood neurodevelopmental disorder, and Methylphenidate (MPH) is a first-line therapeutic option for treating ADHD.However, how brain complexity and entropy changes with methylphenidate treatment the clinical implications of possible changes in entropy and the clinical implications of possible changes in entropy have yet to be studied. Objectives This study aimed to reveal how the MPH treatment affects the complexity in the brain of children with ADHD by entropy-based qEEG analysis. In addition, the presence of the relationship between possible neurophysiological changes to be detected with clinical variables and how they are two other important questions of this study to be answered. Methods During eyes-open resting, EEG signals were recorded from 25 boys with ADHD-combined type before MPH administration and at the end of the 1st month of the treatment. A statistically significant decrease in entropy level was found with MPH treatment in the F4 channel according to approximate entropy (ApEn) and sample entropy (SampEn) analysis (p<0.05). In addition, according to permutation entropy (PermEn) analysis, the decrease in entropy with MPH treatment in the regions indicated by F3, F4, P4, T3, T6, and O2 channels was found to be statistically significant (p <0.05). Conclusions This is the first study to investigate how MPH treatment affects the complexity in the brain of children with ADHD. Entropy-based qEEG analysis may be a new method that can be used in diagnostic, clinical and prognostic predictions in ADHD. Disclosure No significant relationships.

Abstract
PURPOSE To measure humor heat-shock protein 70, periostin, and irisin levels in patients with pseudoexfoliation syndrome and cataract (without glaucoma), and compare them with those of patients with cataract but without pseudoexfoliation. METHODS We examined 31 eyes of 31 patients with pseudoexfoliation and cataract (without glaucoma) and 30 eyes of 30 patients with cataract. We collected aqueous humor samples from all patients at the time of cataract surgery through a limbal paracentesis via a 25-gauge cannula mounted on a tuberculin syringe that received 100 to 150 µL of aqueous humor. We measured levels of aqueous humor Heat shock protein 70, periostin, and irisin using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay methods. RESULTS The age (p=0.221) and gender (p=0.530) means were similar between the pseudoexfoliation and control groups. The mean Heat shock protein 70 level (29.22 ± 9.46 ng/mL; 17.88-74.46) in the pseudoexfoliation group was significantly higher than that in the control group (19.03 ± 7.05 ng/mL; 9.93-35.52; p<0.0001). The mean periostin level was significantly higher (6017.32 ± 1271.79 pg/mL; 3787.50-10803.57) in the pseu doexfoliation group than that in the control group (4073.63 ± 1422.79 pg/mL; 2110.44-7490.64; p<0.0001). The mean irisin level (53.77 ± 10.19 ng/mL; 29.46-71.16) was significantly higher than that in the control group (39.29 ± 13.58 ng/mL; 19.41-70.56; p<0.0001). CONCLUSIONS Heat shock protein 70, periostin, and irisin levels increase in the aqueous humor of patients with pseudoexfoliation without glaucoma.

Abstract
The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of vitamin D on betatrophin and apoptosis in rats kidney tissue using an experimental diabetes model created with streptozotocin (STZ). 41 male Wistar-albino breed rats were assigned to 5 groups, which included 3 groups consisting of 7 animals each and 2 groups consisting of 10 animals each. The control group received no treatments. Single-dose 0.1 M sodium buffer was administered ip to the Buffer group. The Vitamin D group was orally administered 200 IU/day vitamin D. The Diabetes group was injected ip with single-dose 50 mg/kg STZ by dissolving the material in 0.1 M sodium buffer. Subjects with a glucose level exceeding 250 mg/dl were accepted to be diabetic. The Diabetes + Vitamin D group was injected ip with 50 mg/kg single-dose STZ by dissolving the material in 0.1 M sodium buffer. Once diabetes was established, 200 IU/day vitamin D was administered orally. Rats in all groups were decapitated in the end of the experiment, their kidney tissues were promptly extracted and TUNEL stained with immunohistochemistry. Additionally, serum samples acquired from all groups were evaluated with regard to total antioxidant status (TAS) and total oxidant status (TOS) levels. The histological and biochemical analyses of the Control, Buffer, and Vitamin D groups revealed similar serum TOS and TAS levels, and TUNEL positivity and betatrophin immunoreactivity. While the Diabetes group showed significantly higher TOS levels and TUNEL positivity compared to the Control group, their TAS levels and betatrophin immunoreactivity were significantly reduced. The Diabetes+Vitamin group demonstrated significantly lower TOS levels and TUNEL positivity compared to the Diabetic group, and their TAS levels and betatrophin immunoreactivity increased significantly. In conclusion; experimental diabetes was found to increase TOS and apoptotic cells and decrease TAS and betatrophin levels in kidney tissue in experimental diabetes, and that administering VitD as treatment caused a decrease in TOS and apoptotic cells and an increase in TAS and betatrophin levels. It was concluded that future studies needed to investigate various experimental diabetes times so that the role of diabetes in the pathophysiology of its effect on kidney tissue could be uncovered. Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate thiol/disulfide homeostasis in ocular-active (OA) and ocular-inactive (OI) Behçet disease (BD) patients and compare the data with healthy subjects. METHODS Twenty OABD patients, 20 OIBD patients and 20 healthy control subjects were included into the study. The BD ocular attack score 24 (BOS24) scoring system was used to assess the activity of disease in ocular BD patients. Systemic activity was also evaluated using BD current activity form (BDCAF). The native thiol (NT), total thiol (TT) and disulfide levels and NT/TT, disulfide/NT and disulfide/TT ratios were measured via using an innovative and automated method. RESULTS BOS24 and BDCAF scores were 13.25 ± 2.32 and 4.18 ± 2.06 in OABD patients and 0.31 ± 0.47 and 2.14 ± 1.98 in OIBD patients, respectively. The NT, TT levels and NT/TT ratio were significantly reduced; in contrast, the disulfide levels, disulfide/NT and disulfide/TT ratios were significantly increased in OABD and OIBD patients compared to the healthy control subjects (p < 0.05). Moreover, while the levels of NT and TT were significantly reduced, the disulfide levels as well as disulfide/NT and disulfide/TT ratios were significantly elevated between OABD and OIBD patients (p < 0.05). However, the ratio of NT/TT did not significantly differ between OABD and OIBD patients (p = 0.449). The multiple regression model including BOS24 and BDCAF score statistically significantly predicted NT level, TT level and disulfide level (p < 0.001 for all). CONCLUSION Thiol oxidation in BD patients resulted in a change of the thiol/disulfide balance. Therefore, thiol/disulfide homeostasis in BD patients can be used an innovative oxidative stress marker.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate serum cortistatin (CST) levels in patients with ocular active and ocular inactive Behçet disease (BD) and its relationship with disease activity. METHODS 24 BD patients with ocular active, 24 BD patients with ocular inactive patients and 24 healthy control subjects were included in the study. RESULTS In ocular active and ocular inactive BD patients and healthy control subjects, the mean serum CST levels were 4.38 ± 1.63ng/ml, 5.46 ± 1.81ng/ml and 7.56 ± 1.73ng/ml, respectively. ESR, serum CRP, CST levels and NLR were significantly different between the groups (p < 0.001 for all). The CST levels were similar between ocular active and inactive BD patient groups (p = 0.197). ESR, CRP and NLR were significantly higher in ocular active BD patients compared to ocular inactive BD patients and healthy control subjects (p < 0.05 for all). CONCLUSION Serum CST level was significantly lower in BD patients. CST may be a neuropeptide that plays a role in the pathogenesis of BD.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the aqueous humor and serum cortistatin levels in diabetic patients with and without diabetic retinopathy and its relationship with various metabolic markers that have been reported to be associated with diabetes mellitus. METHODS The current study included 20 diabetes mellitus patients with diabetic retinopathy, 20 diabetes mellitus patients without diabetic retinopathy, and 20 healthy control subjects with the same sex and age characteristics. Aqueous humor and serum cortistatin, fasting blood glucose, hemoglobinA1c, 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels, blood lipid profiles, and body mass index were measured in all subjects. RESULTS In diabetic patients with and without diabetic retinopathy and in healthy control subjects, the mean aqueous humor cortistatin levels were 25.55 ± 2.03, 27.71 ± 2.01, and 32.76 ± 3.43 ng/mL, respectively. Likewise, the mean serum cortistatin levels were 6.16 ± 1.08, 6.57 ± 1.00, and 7.56 ± 1.51 ng/mL, respectively. Aqueous humor cortistatin levels were decreased in diabetic patients with and without diabetic retinopathy when compared to healthy controls (p < 0.001). Although aqueous humor cortistatin levels tended to be reduced in diabetic patients with diabetic retinopathy, the difference was not statistically significant between diabetic patients with and without diabetic retinopathy (p = 0.147). Serum cortistatin levels were not statistically significant between diabetic patients with and without diabetic retinopathy and healthy control subjects (p = 0.166). Body mass index, fasting blood glucose, and hemoglobinA1c levels were significantly different between the groups (p < 0.05 for all parameters tested). CONCLUSION Aqueous humor cortistatin levels were decreased in diabetic patients with and without diabetic retinopathy. The results suggest that a local decrease in the amount of cortistatin may play a role in the pathogenesis of diabetic retinopathy.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to compare the effects of N-acetylcysteine and benfotiamine in protection of ovarian tissue from ischemia caused by slow neovascularization injury due to intraperitoneal ovarian autotransplant in rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS Twenty-eight female rats were divided into 4 groups, each containing 7 rats. Group 1 only had the abdomen opened and closed, group 2 was the transplant-only group, group 3 received benfotiamine for 3 weeks starting 1 day before the transplant procedure, and group 4 received N-acetylcysteine for 3 weeks starting 1 day before the transplant procedure. At the end of the experimental period, malondialdehyde levels in ovarian tissues together with the apoptosis and fibrosis, proliferating cell nuclear antigen and vascular endothelial growth factor immunoreactivity, and ovarian reserves were investigated. RESULTS Apoptosis was significantly increased in group 2 animals. Primordial follicle count was higher in groups 3 and 4 than in group 2. Vascular endothelial growth factor immunoreactivity was decreased in groups 3 and 4 compared with group 2. Proliferating cell nuclear antigen immunoreactivity was reduced in the secondary follicles in all transplant groups. CONCLUSIONS In autologous intraperitoneal ovarian transplant, both benfotiamine and N-acetylcysteine are equal and effective agents in protection of ovarian tissue against ischemic injury.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to determine the serum levels of kisspeptin and ghrelin (GAH), as well as the relationship of these two peptides with each other in premature thelarche (PT) and premature adrenarche (PA) cases and to investigate the possibility of using these peptides as markers in the differentiation of puberty disorders. METHODS A PT group aged 1-8 years (n = 40), a PA group aged 1-9 years (n = 23, female/male = 20/3) and control groups consistent with each of the previous groups in terms of age and gender were created for the study. Kisspeptin and ghrelin levels were measured with ELISA methods from blood samples drawn while fasting in the morning. RESULTS When the PT group was compared with the controls, the plasma kisspeptin levels of the cases were significantly higher than the control group (165.47 ± 15.45 pmol/L, 96.82 ± 12.33 pmol/L, p = 0.005, respectively). Kisspeptin levels in the PA group did not show a difference with the control group (121.36 ± 17.99 pmol/L, 95.52 ± 11.54 pmol/L, p = 0.249, respectively). No significant difference could be found when GAH levels in the PT and PA groups were compared with controls. No significant correlation was found between kisspeptin and GAH levels in the PT and PA groups. CONCLUSIONS Our results indicate that kisspeptin plays an important role in the PT, but GAH is not associated with puberty disorders.

Abstract
IntroductionSexual dysfunctions are more common in individuals with psychotic disorders and has a major impact on both quality of life and compliance.ObjectivesThe purpose of this study is to investigate whether a relationship between sexual dysfunction and level of treatment compliance in individuals with psychotic disorders.MethodsThe sample group of the study consisted of 173 in-patients who agreed to participate were selected by random sampling method. The permission was obtained from the hospital's ethics committee. In this study, to assess the sexual functionality Golombok-Rust inventory of sexual satisfaction male and female form and to assess the treatment compliance; medical treatment compliance rate scale is used.ResultsWhen sexual problems and treatment compliance compared to gender, subscales of satisfaction (t = 4,423, P = 0.000), avoidance (t = 3.348, P = 0.001), touch (t = 2.165, P = 0.032) and overall total (t = 4.015, P = 0.000), although a statistically significant difference was found, there were no differences in treatment compliance. Aditionally, there is no relation between sexual problems and treatment compliance in men. It is also found that there is a weak negative statistical relation amongst treatment compliance and communication (r = −0.244, P = 0.027), avoidance (r = −0.270, P = 0.014), anorgasmia (r = −0.253, P = 0.022) and overall total (r = −0.249, P = 0.024) in women. According to these findings while sexual problems increase, treatment compliance decreases.ConclusionsThe level of compliance to the treatment and subscales of sexual problems; satisfaction, avoidance, and touch mean scores differ from each other. Abstract
Reactive oxygen species are believed to be involved in the development of sepsis. Plant-derived phenolic compounds are thought to be possible therapeutic agents against sepsis because of their antioxidant properties. Rosmarinic acid (RA) is a phenolic compound commonly found in various plants, which has many biological activities including antioxidant activity. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of RA on sepsis-induced DNA damage in the lymphocytes and liver and kidney cells of Wistar albino rats by alkaline comet assay with and without formamidopyrimidine DNA glycosylase protein. The oxidative stress parameters such as superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activities and total glutathione (GSH) and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in the liver and kidney tissues and an inflammatory cytokine, tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α) level in plasma were also evaluated. It is found that DNA damage in the lymphocytes, livers, and kidneys of the RA-treated rats was significantly lower than that in the sepsis-induced rats. RA treatment also decreased the MDA levels and increased the GSH levels and SOD and GSH-Px activities in the livers and kidneys of the sepsis-induced rats. Plasma TNF-α level was found to be decreased in the RA-treated rats. It seems that RA might have a role in the attenuation of sepsis-induced oxidative damage not only by decreasing the DNA damage but also by increasing the antioxidant status and DNA repair capacity of the animals.

Abstract
Aflatoxins, the secondary metabolites produced by species of naturally occurring Aspergilli, are commonly found in food such as cereals, dried fruits and juice, wine, beer and spices. They are hepatotoxic and are well known human carcinogens based on evidence from human studies. Aflatoxins are an environmental risk factor for the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Chronic hepatitis B-infected patients are at increased risk of cirrhosis, hepatic failure and liver cancer. This study was designed to determine the serum aflatoxin B1 (AFB1 ), aflatoxin B2 (AFB2 ), aflatoxin G1 (AFG1 ) and aflatoxin G2 (AFG2 ) concentrations using high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) in hepatitis B-infected patients with or without cirrhosis and liver cancer, alongside healthy controls in Balıkesir, Turkey. The mean AFB1 and total AF levels in patients without liver cancer and cirrhosis were significantly higher than healthy controls. The mean AFB1 and total AF levels in patients with chronic hepatitis B and HCC were significantly higher than infected patients with or without cirrhosis. These results suggest that patients with chronic hepatitis B who are exposed to AFs are at increased risk for developing HCC, which might be prevented by reducing consumption of contaminated foods.

Abstract
Adipocytes are not only for energy storage, but are also functionally active cells, producing biologically active peptides called adipocytokines. Adipocytokines control nutrition, thermogenesis, immunity, thyroid and reproductive hormones, and neuroendocrine functions. One of the most important new members of this family is apelin. In patients with thyroid dysfunctions, there are usually changes in weight, thermogenesis and adipose tissue lipolysis. Here, we investigated the serum apelin levels in different thyroid hormone states. Our study group consisted of the following patients: 32 thyrotoxicosis, 32 subclinical hyperthyroidism, 31 hypothyroidism, 34 subclinical hypothyroidism and 31 healthy control cases. In addition to routine blood tests, serum free T3 (FT3), free T4 (FT4), TSH and apelin levels were measured, and the body mass index (BMI) was recorded. In terms of the demographic characteristics, age and BMI, there was no statistically significant difference between the groups (P>0.05). The mean serum apelin levels of the groups were as follows: thyrotoxicosis group, 4.6±1.9 ng/ml; subclinical hyperthyroidism group, 3.7±1.9 ng/ml; hypothyroid group, 4.8±2.5 ng/ml; subclinical hypothyroidism group, 4.3±2.2 ng/mL; and control group, 3.4±1.4 ng/ml, respectively. There was no statistically significant difference in terms of the mean apelin levels between the groups (P>0.05). The hypothyroid group had the highest and the control group had the lowest mean apelin levels. As a result, the apelin levels were higher in both the patients with hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism, in comparison with the normal population, but without statistical significance.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS Due to risk of morbidity and mortality, various tests and scoring systems used in the assessment of the diagnosis and severity of acute pancreatitis disease are gaining more importance every day. Most of the current scoring systems, validated by various parameters, have a sophisticated and complex structure. Research is ongoing to establish a method to diagnose the disease and determine the severity by using different and simple parameters. In this trial, we aimed to investigate the role of the orexigenic "ghrelin" and anorexigenic "obestatin" hormones, if any, on the diagnosis and assessment of the severity of acute pancreatitis. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 30 patients hospitalized between September 2009 and September 2010 with a diagnosis of acute pancreatitis (AP) and 25 healthy volunteers were enrolled in the trial with a prospective and randomized design. The patients were classified in two groups, mild (Ranson ≤3 and / or Apache II ≤8) and severe (Ranson >3 and/or Apache II >8) cases, as per the Ranson and Apache-II criteria; the ghrelin and obestatin levels in blood samples obtained from the patients were measured using the ELISA method. RESULTS Twenty-two of the 30 patients (73%) were regarded as mild pancreatitis cases, while 8 cases (27%) were diagnosed as severe pancreatitis. Comparison of the mild and severe pancreatitis groups did not reveal a statistical difference between the two groups in terms of acylated and de-acylated ghrelin values on presentation and following the initiation of oral feeding. Similarly, no significant difference was found in the comparison of the patient and the control groups in terms of acylated and de-acylated ghrelin values on presentation (p=0.863). On the other hand, acylated and de-acylated ghrelin values after initiation of oral feeding were observed to be higher in the patient group (p=0.001, p=0.000). Comparison of these two groups revealed a significant difference in obestatin values, both on presentation and after initiation of oral feeding (p=0.002 and p=0.000). CONCLUSION Consistently high serum ghrelin values during pancreatic inflammation suggest that ghrelin may be used as an adjunctive parameter in the monitoring of the course of the disease. On the other hand, high obestatin values in patients on presentation indicate that this hormone is a more significant parameter in terms of diagnosis. However, no correlation was established between these two peptide hormones and the severity of AP.
