Concurrent Variations of Celiac and Superior Mesenteric Arteries

Celiac trunk is the first ventral branch of the abdominal aorta. It usually terminates by giving three branches; the common hepatic artery, the left gastric artery and the splenic artery. We report a rare variation of the branching pattern of the celiac trunk. The Celiac trunk divided into two branches; left gastric artery and splenicogastroduodenal trunk. The splenico-gastroduodenal trunk divided into splenic and gastroduodenal arteries. The superior mesenteric artery and hepatic artery took origin from a common hepato-mesenteric trunk. The hepatic artery had a winding course around the portal vein and hepatic duct. The knowledge of these variations is important while doing radiological investigations and liver transplant and pancreatic surgeries.

A morphometric study on flexor carpi radialis muscle of the forearm: A cadaveric study

BACKGROUND

Flexor carpi radialis (FCR) is frequently used in reconstruction procedures involving the hand and wrist regions. Despite having tremendous clinical significance, very few studies have been conducted on the heterogeneity of the FCR. Its surgical importance in grafting techniques and tendon transfers prompted us to study the morphometry of FCR.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

In this study, we used 37 upper limbs (25 right and 12 left sides) of formalin embalmed cadavers. FCR was neatly dissected in all upper limbs to measure its total length, muscle belly length, tendon length, width of muscle belly at proximal and distal ends, width of tendon at proximal and distal ends.

RESULTS

Average total length of the muscle, muscle belly length, tendon length, width of muscle belly at the proximal end, width of muscle belly at the distal end, width of tendon at the proximal end, width of tendon at the distal end were 27.1 ± 2.13, 12.38 ± 2.23, 14.99 ± 2.36, 1.99 ± 0.72, 1.59 ± 0.48, 1.59 ± 0.48 and 0.42 ± 0.12 cm, respectively. Ratio of mean muscle length and tendon length, ratio of mean tendon length and total length were found to be 0.45 ± 0.07 and 0.55 ± 0.07, respectively. No noted variations were observed in the proximal and distal attachments of the FCR muscle.

CONCLUSION

Morphometric data of FCR reported increases the existing knowledge on the heterogeneity of FCR morphology, and further forms an anatomic basis while designing/elevating the graft in certain surgical procedures in hand and wrist regions.

Terminal bifurcation of the right testicular vein and left testicular arterio-venous anastomosis

The testis is the organ upon which the survival of the human species depends. Abnormalities of testicular vessels may lead to loss of gametogenesis and hormone production. Reported here is a case of bilateral variations of the testicular vessels observed in a male cadaver during the first year MBBS dissection classes. The right testicular vein bifurcated into two veins just before its termination and both the branches terminated into the inferior vena cava. The left testicular artery arose from the abdominal aorta just above the level of origin of the inferior mesenteric artery. There was an arterio-venous anastomosis between the left testicular vein and the left testicular artery. The arterio-venous anastomosis might be functionally important as it can change the quality of the blood entering the testis.

Retromolar foramen and canal: a comprehensive review on its anatomy and clinical applications

The retromolar foramen (RMF) and retromolar canal (RMC) are the anatomical structures of the mandible located in retromolar fossa behind the third molar tooth. This foramen and canal contain neurovascular structures which provide accessory/additional innervation to the mandibular molars and the buccal area. These neurovascular contents of the canal gain more importance in medical and dental practice, because these elements are vulnerable to damage during placement of osteointegrated implants, endodontic treatment and sagittal split osteotomy surgeries and a detailed knowledge of this anatomical variation would be vital in understanding failed inferior alveolar nerve blockage, spread of infection and also metastasis. Although few studies have been conducted in the past showing the incidence and types in different population groups, a lacunae in comprehensive review of this structure is lacking. Though this variation posed challenging situations for the practicing surgeons, it has been quite neglected and the incidence of it is not well presented in all the textbooks. Hence, we made an attempt to provide a consolidated review regarding variations and clinical applications of the RMF and RMC.

Unusual branching pattern of axillary artery associated with the high origin of ulnar artery

Axillary artery is a continuation of subclavian artery, extending from the outer border of first rib to the lower border of teres major muscle. During routine dissection for the undergraduate medical students, a rare variations was seen in an approximately 55-year-old male cadaver. This case showed a variation in branching pattern of right axillary and subscapular arteries. The subscapular artery originated from 2^nd part of axillary artery, gave origin to posterior circumflex humeral and lateral thoracic arteries in addition to its normal branches. The ulnar artery originated from the 3^rd part of the axillary artery, just above the lower border of teres major muscle. The variant ulnar artery passed deep to the median cubital vein, bicipital aponeurosis, and tendon of palmaris longus muscle. Then, it passed superficial to flexor digitorum superficialis muscle and flexor retinaculum to enter the palm. In the palm, it formed the superficial palmar arch. This variant ulnar artery was much smaller in caliber than the radial artery.
