Abstract
OBJECTIVE The choice approach to treating congenital dislocation of the hip joint is total hip replacement (THR). One of the severe but uncommon complications of THR is nerve damage. The most common nerve injury associated with total hip arthroplasty (THA) is sciatic nerve palsy, and the second typical nerve damage with THA is femoral nerve paralysis. PATIENTS AND METHODS In this prospective cohort study, 35 patients with type 4 high riding developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) who were candidates for THA were enrolled. The somatosensory evoked potential (SSEP), motor evoked potential (MEP), and electromyography (EMG) were measured pre-post and intraoperatively to check the status of the sciatic and femoral nerves. After collecting the mentioned information, the data was analyzed by SPSS V. 26 software. RESULTS Out of 35 patients with DDH type 4 who were candidates for THR, nine patients showed a 50 percent decrease in SSEP amplitude, and six patients showed a 10 percent decrease in SSEP latency. One patient during and two patients after the surgery showed more than an 80 percent decrease in MEP amplitude. Meanwhile, 14 patients showed abnormal spikes during and two patients after surgery regarding EMG. All patients with disturbed neurophysiological findings reverted to normal in the further investigation during follow-up. No correlation was found between increasing limb shortness and these modalities. CONCLUSIONS Using neuromonitoring techniques during Total Hip Arthroplasty (THA) can help identify potential early nerve damage, prevent post-surgical complications, and improve high-riding DDH patient outcomes.

Abstract
This study aims to investigate whether the variation in reproduction success, growth, and milk trajectories is associated with different adaptive strategies in the short term (response to an acute nutritional challenge), using two Alpine goat lines. A total of 382 Alpine goats (179 low longevity (low_LGV) and 203 high longevity (high_LGV)), selected for divergent functional longevity from a commercial population, were monitored for 4 years and recorded for BW, reproduction and milking performance. Every year, an average of fifty primiparous goats were exposed to a 2-d nutritional challenge in early lactation. A polynomial model was used to analyse the lifetime trajectory of lactation and BW. A piecewise model was used to analyse the individual milk yield and responses of milk components to the nutritional challenges. The statistical analysis revealed that the two lines had a similar performance for total milk yield in the first lactation, BW at birth and at first kidding, litter size and weight, kidding interval and interval from the first insemination to conception. BW trajectories revealed that low_LGV goats had a greater BW in pregnancy but then lost more weight in early lactation compared to high_LGV goats, which showed a greater BW after kidding. Milk trajectories showed that the high_LGV goats had a higher initial milk yield, an earlier but less marked lactation peak and more persistency in milk production in late lactation than low_LGV goats. Except for milk protein content, quite similar response and recovery profiles of milk yield and milk fat content were observed during the challenge for both lines. The response to the challenge was positively correlated to the initial level of milk production in early lactation but negatively correlated with milk production decline after the peak. This finding suggests that the low_LGV goats were more adapted to allocate resources to meet an expected physiological change such as gestation and lactation. However, high_LGV goats allocate more than low_LGV goats for structural mass and may better cope with an unexpected environmental change such as nutritional deficit.

Abstract
A set of commonly used food additives was evaluated for their antifungal activity against the brown rot disease of fruits caused by the fungal pathogen Monilinia fructigena, which is one of the most economically important agents, causing important damage to pome fruits, such as pears and apples. The radial mycelial growth of the fungal pathogen was assessed in PDA amended with different concentrations (0.5, 2, 2.5, and 5%) of each additive. The results underlined that most of the additives displayed a significant inhibition of mycelial growth, with the extent of inhibition varying depending on the specific additive and concentration used. Five food additives showed high inhibition rates (above 88%), of which sodium bicarbonate, sodium carbonate, copper sulphate, and sodium hydroxide were the most effective, whereas ammonium carbonate, magnesium chlorite, and citric acid were the least effective. Interestingly, the coatings containing sodium bicarbonate, copper sulphate, and ammonium bicarbonate significantly reduced the incidence of brown rot disease in apples, but other additives were not effective, such as ammonium carbonate and magnesium sulphate. The anhydrous sodium sulphate used at a concentration of 2%, was found to be one of the least effective additives, with a reduction rate of 20%. Subsequently, food additives showing good growth inhibition rates and reduction in disease severity were then tested in semi-commercial trials at temperatures of 4 °C and 22 °C. The results indicated that these additives demonstrate effectiveness in controlling M. fructigena at specific concentrations, and lower temperatures (4 °C) can improve the efficiency of the control measures. In addition, the selected food additives exhibited significant antimicrobial activity against M. fructigena, suggesting their application as a promising alternative for managing brown rot disease in apple fruits.

Abstract
A decline of various grapevines (Vitis vinifera L.) in the province of Doukkala in Morocco was observed in 2021. The causal pathogen was identified as Lasiodiplodia viticola based on morphological characteristics and phylogenetic analysis of the internal transcribed region (ITS), the β-tubulin gene (TUB) and calmodulin (cmdA). Koch’s postulates were confirmed by successful re-isolation of L. viticola from plants inoculated with the pathogen under controlled conditions. The disease was shown to be prevalent in Bni Hilal (71.43%), Laamria (60%), and Boulaouane (40%) districts, but was quasi-absent in Lmechrek. To understand the dominance of L. viticola as one of the grapevine trunk pathogens, effects of temperature (10–40 °C) and pH (pH 3–pH 12) on growth and sporulation were investigated. The species were able to grow in a range of temperatures ranging from 15 to 40°C and showed a higher growth rate at 35 °C. The fungus were also characterized by a broad optimum pH ranging between 3–12. This study is the first report dealing with L. viticola associated with grapevine trunk diseases in Morocco. Additional studies are therefore required to understand the high occurrence of this disease in vineyards, which is likely due to climate changes. A good understanding of this complex disease might help to develop a reliable and sustainable preventive control strategy.

Abstract
Several diseases affect the productivity of olive trees, including root rot disease caused by Pythium genera. Chemical fungicides, which are often used to manage this disease, have harmful side effects on humans as well as environmental components. Biological management is a promising control approach that has shown its great potential as an efficient eco-friendly alternative to treating root rot diseases. In the present study, the antagonistic activity of ten bacterial isolates was tested both in vitro and in planta against Pythium schmitthenneri, the causal agent of olive root rot disease. These bacterial isolates belonging to the genera Alcaligenes, Pantoea, Bacillus, Sphingobacterium, and Stenotrophomonas were chosen for their potential antimicrobial effects against many pathogens. Results of the in vitro confrontation bioassay revealed a high reduction of mycelial growth exceeding 80%. The antifungal effect of the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) was observed for all the isolates, with mycelial inhibition rates ranging from 28.37 to 70.32%. Likewise, the bacterial cell-free filtrates showed important inhibition of the mycelial growth of the pathogen. Overall, their efficacy was substantially affected by the nature of the bacterial strains and their modes of action. A greenhouse test was then carried out to validate the in vitro results. Interestingly, two bacterial isolates, Alcaligenes faecalis ACBC1 and Bacillus amyloliquefaciens SF14, were the most successful in managing the disease. Our findings suggested that these two antagonistic bacterial isolates have promising potential as biocontrol agents of olive root rot disease.

Abstract
Cell-matrix interfacial energies and the energies of matrix deformations may be comparable on cellular length-scales, yet how capillary effects influence tis sue shape and motion are unknown. In this work, we induce wetting (spreading and migration) of cell aggregates, as models of active droplets onto adhesive substrates of varying elasticity and correlate the dynamics of wetting to the balance of interfacial tensions. Upon wetting rigid substrates, cell-substrate tension drives outward expansion of the monolayer. By contrast, upon wetting compliant substrates, cell substrate tension is attenuated and aggregate capillary forces contribute to internal pressures that drive expansion. Thus, we show by experiments, data-driven modeling and computational simulations that myosin-driven 'active elasto-capillary' effects enable adaptation of wetting mechanisms to substrate rigidity and introduce a novel, pressure-based mechanism for guiding collective cell motion.

Abstract
Grapevine trunk diseases (GTD) are currently one of the most devastating and challenging diseases in viticulture, leading to considerable yield losses and a remarkable decline in grapevine quality. The identification of the causal agents is the cornerstone of an efficient approach to fighting against fungal diseases in a sustainable, non-chemical manner. This review attempts to describe and expose the symptoms of each pathology related to GTD, the modes of transmission, and the harmfulness of recently reported agents. Special attention was given to new diagnostic tests and technologies, grapevine defense mechanisms, molecular mechanisms of endophytes fungal colonization, and management strategies used to control these threats. The present extended review is, therefore, an updated state-of-the-art report on the progress in the management of vineyards.

Abstract
We explore the relationship between the nonequilibrium generation of myosin-induced active stress within the F-actin cytoskeleton and the pressure-volume relationship of cellular aggregates as models of simple tissues. We find that due to active stress, aggregate surface tension depends upon its size. As a result, both pressure and cell number density depend on size and violate equilibrium assumptions. However, the relationship between them resembles an equilibrium equation of state with an effective temperature. This suggests that bulk and surface properties of aggregates balance to yield a constant average work performed by each cell on their environment in regulating tissue size. These results describe basic physical principles that govern the size of cell aggregates.

Abstract
We present molecular dynamics simulations of one- and two-dimensional bead-spring models sliding on incommensurate substrates after an initial kick, in the case where the coupling to the underlying substrate is weak, i.e., energy can dissipate only into the internal degrees of freedom of the sliding object, but not into the substrate below. We investigate how sliding friction is affected by structural defects and interaction anharmonicity. In their absence, we confirm earlier findings, namely, that at special resonance sliding velocities, friction is maximal. When sliding off-resonance, partially thermalized states are possible, whereby only a small number of vibrational modes becomes excited, but whose kinetic energies are already Maxwell-Boltzmann distributed. Anharmonicity and defects typically destroy partial thermalization and instead lead to full thermalization, implying much higher friction. For sliders with periodic boundaries, thermalization begins with vibrational modes whose spatial modulation is compatible with the incommensurate lattice. For a disk-shaped slider, modes corresponding to modulations compatible with the slider radius are initially the most dominant. By tuning the mechanical properties of the slider's edge, this effect can be controlled, resulting in significant changes in the sliding distance covered.

Abstract
Fascioliasis is an emerging and important food and water-borne disease in human communities which has become one of the most important health challenges in countries, like Iran. It causes weight loss, a decrease in feed conversion ratio as well as milk and meat production, and also reduces fertility in animals the prevalence of fasciolosis is increasing in some regions of the world due to various factors. Different methods have been used for the detection of Fasciola hepatica in animals. This study is the first to detect F. hepatica in Lori sheep using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and conventional diagnostic methods in Western Iran. During three months, 195 fecal samples were collected from sheep in Lorestan province, Iran, using the stratified random sampling method. The conventional diagnostic methods, including wet mount microscopic examination and concentration assays, as well as the PCR technique targeting the intergenic spacer gene of F. hepatica, were used for the detection of the parasite in sheep. In total, 4 (2.1%) out of 195 examined stool samples were positive for F. hepatica based on the conventional assays. The PCR test was positive for F. hepatica in7 (3.6%) samples of 195 studied specimens. Statistical analyses of the data revealed that there is a significant difference between the results of diagnostic methods for F. hepatica detection (P=0.0421). Finally, the results showed that PCR has more diagnostic sensitivity, compared to conventional diagnostic methods, including the concentration techniques and microscopic examination. Hence, it can be advised to use PCR for the detection of F. hepatica in sheep.

Abstract
This study aimed at evaluating the effect of environmental factors temperature and water potential (Ψw) on the growth of Neocosmospora (Fusarium) solani and three Fusarium species (F. oxysporum, F. equiseti and F. brachygibbosum) associated with citrus dry root rot and to determine the optimum and marginal rate for their growth. The effects of incubation temperature (5-40 °C), water potentials (Ψw) (- 15.54; - 0.67 MPa) (0.89-0.995 aw) and their interaction (5-30 °C) was evaluated on the in vitro radial growth rates of Fusarium spp. and on their lag phase. Secondary models were used to model the combined effect of these factors on radial growth rate. The results underlined a highly significant effects (P < 0.001) of Ψw and temperature and their interactions on radial growth rates and lag phases (λ). The Four studied species were shown tolerant to a temperature of 35 °C with an optimum mycelial growth at 30 for N. solani and F. oxysporum and at 25 °C for F. equiseti and F. brachygibbosum. However, no growth was observed at both temperatures 5 and 40 °C and at Ψw of - 9.68 MPa (0.93 aw). The optimum water potential for growth was ≥- 2.69 MPA (>0.98 aw). The results from the polynomial model and response surface showing good agreement between observed and predicted values. The external validation on citrus fruit indicated slight differences between predicted and observed values of radial growth. The results of this study will be beneficial for understanding the ecological knowledge of these species and thereby limited preventively their occurrence.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Smoking has negative consequences on occupational health. The current meta-analysis was conducted with the aim to pool the studies about smoking and increased disability pension. STUDY DESIGN Systematic review and meta-analysis. METHODS Articles were found in the scientific literature using keywords, and searching was limited to prospective cohort studies that had been published before August 2018. Based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 23 prospective cohort studies were selected. The analyses were carried out on the basis of the random-effects method. Subgroup analysis was also carried out. Finally, the bias of publication was examined using Begg's test, the Egger test, the trim-and-fill method, and the funnel plot. RESULTS Twenty-three studies were included. The results showed a positive association between smoking and disability pension, with a risk ratio (RR) of 1.41 and 95% confidence interval (95% CI) of 1.30-1.53 (P < 0.001). In men, the RR was equal to 1.48 and 95% CI was equal to 1.30-1.68 (P < 0.001). In women, the RR was equal to 1.23 and 95% CI was equal to 1.09-1.37 (P = 0.001). In current smokers, the RR was equal to 1.41 and 95% CI was equal to 1.26-1.57 (P < 0.001). In former smokers, the RR was equal to 1.16 and 95% CI was equal to 1.05-1.29 (P = 0.003). Qualitative evaluation showed that the studies had a low level of selection bias, data collection bias, and withdrawal and dropout bias. CONCLUSIONS Smoking is a risk factor for increasing disability pension, and men are at higher risk of disability pension. In addition, both current and former smokers are in high risk of disability pension. Overall, it can be concluded that smoking is a risk factor for occupational health.

Abstract
ObjectiveDespite being the subject of many studies over the past two decades, mechanisms underlying psychogenic non-epileptic seizures (PNES) are still poorly understood. We tried to address this issue by utilizing brain functional connectivity analysis to identify brain regions with abnormal activities in patients with PNES. In a case-control study, we performed graph based network analysis, a robust technique that determines the organization of brain connectivity and characterizes topological properties of the brain networks.MethodsTwelve individuals with PNES and twenty-one healthy control subjects were examined. Resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rsfMRI) was acquired. All subjects were asked to keep their eyes open during the scanning process. The rsfMRI analysis consisted of pre-processing, extracting the functional connectivity matrix (FCM) based on the AAL atlas, threshold for binary FCM, constructing a graph network from FCM and extracting graph features, and finally statistical analysis. For all cortical and subcortical regions of the AAL atlas, we calculated measures of ‘degree,’ which is one of the features of the graph theory. Results: Our results revealed that, as compared to the healthy control subjects, patients with PNES had a significantly lower degree in some brain regions including their left and right insula (INS), right Putamen (PUT), left and right Supramarginal gyrus (SMG), right Middle occipital gyrus (MOG), and left and right Rolandic operculum (ROL). In contrast, degree was significantly greater in two regions [i.e., right Caudate (CAU) and left Inferior frontal gyrus orbital part (ORBinf)] in patients with PNES compared to that in controls.ConclusionOur findings suggest that functional connectivity of several major brain regions are different in patients with PNES compared with that in healthy individuals. While there is hypoactivity in regions important in perception, motor control, self- awareness, and cognitive functioning (e.g., insula) and also movement regulation (e.g., putamen), there is hyperactivity in areas involved in feedback processing (i.e., using information from past experiences to influence future actions and decisions) (e.g., caudate) in patients with PNES. The observation that individuals with PNES suffer from a wide range of abnormal activities in functional connectivity of their brain networks is consistent with the fact that PNES occur in a heterogeneous patient population; no single mechanism or contributing factor could explain PNES in all patients.

We examined the functional connectivity of subcallosal cingulate gyrus (SCG), nucleus accumbens (NAc), and ventral caudate (VCa), the main target areas for the treatment of major depression disorder (MDD), using deep brain stimulation (DBS). MDD is one of the most common diseases in the world, and approximately 30% of MDD patients do not respond to common therapies, including psychotherapy and antidepressant medications. Alternatively, DBS has been recently used to treat MDD. Resting state fMRI was obtained from seventeen healthy subjects and seven MDD patients. The functional connectivity network of the brain was constructed for all subjects and measured by the `degree' value for each SCG, NAc, and VCa regions using the graph theory analysis. The results show that the degree values of VCa and the left SCG are higher in the MDD group than the healthy group. Furthermore, the patterns of the degree values were different for the right and left hemispheres in MDD patients. Our findings suggest that degree values and their patterns have a potential to be used as diagnosis tools to detect the brain areas with abnormal functional connectivity.

Abstract
This study aimed at evaluating the antagonistic activity of 16 bacterial strains for the control of brown rot disease caused by Monilinia fructigena, and M. laxa under in vitro and a semi-commercial large-scale trial. These bacterial antagonists' belonging to the genera Alcaligenes, Bacillus, Brevibacterium, Pantoea, Pseudomonas, and Serratia were previously proven effective for control of fire blight of apple. The in vitro dual culture bioassay showed the highest inhibition rates of mycelial growth ranging from 55 to 95% and from 43 to 94% for M. fructigena and M. laxa, respectively. The in vivo bioassay showed moderate and strong inhibition for M. fructigena and M. laxa, respectively. The inhibition rates were dependent on incubation time as well as pathogen virulence. The free-cell bacterial filtrate revealed substantial mycelial growth inhibition ranging from 66 to 86%. The inhibition of conidial germination was from 32 to 78%, suggesting the involvement of metabolites in their biocontrol activity. The antifungal effect of the volatile compounds (VCOs) was observed for all bacteria with mycelial inhibition varying from 12 to 70%. Overall, their efficacy was substantially affected by the nature of the bacterial strains and the modes of action. Taken together, these results underscore that ACBC1 and SF14 for M. fructigena and SP10 and ACBP1 for M. laxa were the most effective bacterial strains. These strains were confirmed effective in a semi-commercial large-scale trial. Interestingly, their efficacies were found to be comparable to those of both commercial BCAs (B. subtilis Y1336 and P. agglomerans P10c), but slightly lower than thiophanate-methyl fungicide. The ability of most bacterial strains to produce lytic enzymes (Amylase, Protease or Cellulase) and lipopeptides (bacillomycin, fengycin, iturin and surfactin) was demonstrated by biochemical and molecular analyzes. Therefore, our findings suggest that the bacterial antagonists ACBC1, SF14, SP10 and ACBP1, have the potential to prevent brown rot disease.

Abstract
We studied the correlation between corticospinal signaling and neuromuscular properties in children with Cerebral Palsy (CP). Corticospinal signaling was evaluated using Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS). Neuromuscular properties were quantified using Hoffmann reflex (H-reflex), sonoelastography, clinical measurements, and isokinetic measures. In particular, we determined the relationship between the TMS parameters of the ankle joint and the neuromuscular features of ankle extensors and flexors as well as popular clinical measures of gait speed, endurance, balance and mobility. Seventeen CP patients and twelve healthy control subjects were evaluated. Our findings showed that the motor evoked potential (MEP) latency of TMS was significantly longer in CP than in healthy subjects. The MEP-latency was significantly correlated with the H-reflex response (r=0.71, p-value=0.04) and isokinetic features; i.e. max acceleration extension time (r=0.5, p-value=0.005), and max flexion time in the cycle (r=0.5, p-value =0.002). No significant correlation was observed between MEP-latency and clinical measurements of gait and sonoelastography of ankle muscles. The results suggest that the changes in corticospinal signaling could contribute to muscle weakness and hyperexcitability of reflexes observed in children with CP.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Minimal-invasive placement of screws into the posterior column of the acetabulum (PC) is challenging. Due to the saddle-shaped curvature of the medial cortical border of the PC, the standard fluoroscopic views of the pelvis cannot provide the desired safety during screw insertion. The aim of this study was to define a view tangentially to the medial cortex of the PC and to evaluate its accuracy and inter-observer reproducibility. METHODS Radio-dense markers on the medial cortex of the PC along the axis of a PC screw were brought in line and landmarks of the new "Down the PC" view were determined. Kirschner wires were placed into the PC of a pelvis composite model and five pelvic cadaver specimens in a total of 34 different correct and incorrect positions. Based on either only the "Down the PC" view, only the standard views, or a combination of both, three fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeons had to decide if the inserted wires were in bone in the posterior column or had exited cortex, and if they penetrated the acetabulum. Sensitivity, specificity, and the intra-class correlation coefficient were calculated. RESULTS A view using three radiographic landmarks (pelvic brim, medial cortical wall of the body of the ischium, ischial spine) was found. Sensitivity and specificity to detect perforation out of the bone were 1.00 and 0.97 for the "Down the PC" view, 0.46 and 0.97 if only the standard views were used, and 1.00 and 0.95 for a combination of both. Sensitivity and specificity to detect intra-articular wire placement were 1.00 and 0.96 for the "Down the PC" view, 0.72 and 0.95 if only the standard views were used, and 0.94 and 0.99 for a combination of both. Inter-observer agreement using only the "Down the PC" view was excellent with an ICC of 0.92 for perforation and ICC of 0.82 for intra-articular wire placement. CONCLUSIONS The "Down the PC" view is a useful addendum in the orthopaedic trauma surgeon's tool box. Using simple landmarks, it is easily to reproduce and thereby shows excellent accuracy and inter-observer agreement in order to detect medial perforation or intra-articular implant position.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to evaluate the indication, visual and refractive outcome, endothelial cell loss and complication rate after implantation of a posterior iris-claw aphakic intraocular lens (IOL). PATIENTS AND METHODS This retrospective study comprised 62 eyes of 56 patients without adequate capsular support undergoing posterior iris-claw aphakic IOL implantation (Verisyse™/Artisan®) between 2006 and 2012. Mean follow-up was 34 months (range from 13 to 78 months). RESULTS The IOLs were inserted during primary lens surgery in 11 phakic eyes (17.8 %), during an IOL exchange procedure for dislocated posterior chamber IOLs in 34 eyes (54.8 %), and as a secondary procedure in 17 aphakic eyes (27.4 %). The final best spectacle-corrected visual acuity (BSCVA) in logMAR (mean 0.24 ± 0.45) improved significantly (p < 0.001) compared to the preoperative BSCVA (mean 0.61 ± 0.65). The mean spherical equivalent improved from preoperative 7,25 ± 5,04 diopters (D) (range - 10.25 to + 16.0 D) to - 0.21 ± 1.01 D (range - 4.0 to 3.0 D) postoperatively. Mean central endothelial cell density was 1844 ± 690 cells/mm(2) preoperatively. After surgery mean endothelial cell density decreased statistically not significant with a loss of 5.5 % to 1743 ± 721 cells/mm(2) (p > 0.05) at last follow-up visit. Complications included cystoid macular oedema in 4 eyes (6.4 %), early postoperative hypotony in 2 eyes (3.2 %), pupil ovalisation in 2 eyes (3.2 %), traumatic iris-claw IOL disenclavation in 2 eyes (3.2 %) and spontaneous IOL disenclavation in one eye (1.6 %). CONCLUSIONS Retropupillar iris-claw IOL provides good visual and refractive outcomes with a low endothelial cell loss and can be used for a wide range of indications in eyes without adequate capsular support.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Brain tissue segmentation for delineation of 3D anatomical structures from magnetic resonance (MR) images can be used for neuro-degenerative disorders, characterizing morphological differences between subjects based on volumetric analysis of gray matter (GM), white matter (WM) and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), but only if the obtained segmentation results are correct. Due to image artifacts such as noise, low contrast and intensity non-uniformity, there are some classification errors in the results of image segmentation. OBJECTIVE An automated algorithm based on multi-layer perceptron neural networks (MLPNN) is presented for segmenting MR images. The system is to identify two tissues of WM and GM in human brain 2D structural MR images. A given 2D image is processed to enhance image intensity and to remove extra cerebral tissue. Thereafter, each pixel of the image under study is represented using 13 features (8 statistical and 5 non- statistical features) and is classified using a MLPNN into one of the three classes WM and GM or unknown. RESULTS The developed MR image segmentation algorithm was evaluated using 20 real images. Training using only one image, the system showed robust performance when tested using the remaining 19 images. The average Jaccard similarity index and Dice similarity metric for the GM and WM tissues were estimated to be 75.7 %, 86.0% for GM, and 67.8% and 80.7%for WM, respectively. CONCLUSION The obtained performances are encouraging and show that the presented method may assist with segmentation of 2D MR images especially where categorizing WM and GM is of interest.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Numerous complications following total knee replacement (TKR) relate to the patellofemoral (PF) joint, including pain and patellar maltracking, yet the options for in vivo imaging of the PF joint are limited, especially after TKR. We propose a novel sequential biplane radiological method that permits accurate tracking of the PF and tibiofemoral (TF) joints throughout the range of movement under weightbearing, and test it in knees pre- and post-arthroplasty. METHODS A total of three knees with end-stage osteoarthritis and three knees that had undergone TKR at more than one year's follow-up were investigated. In each knee, sequential biplane radiological images were acquired from the sagittal direction (i.e. horizontal X-ray source and 10° below horizontal) for a sequence of eight flexion angles. Three-dimensional implant or bone models were matched to the biplane images to compute the six degrees of freedom of PF tracking and TF kinematics, and other clinical measures. RESULTS The mean and standard deviation for the six degrees of freedom of PF tracking and TF kinematics were computed. TF and PF kinematics were highly accurate (< 0.9 mm, < 0.6°) and repeatable. CONCLUSIONS The developed method permitted measuring of in vivo PF tracking and TF kinematics before and after TKR throughout the range of movement. This method could be a useful tool for investigating differences between cohorts of patients (e.g., with and without pain) impacting clinical decision-making regarding surgical technique, revision surgery or implant design.

This paper introduces the magnetic properties, synthesis methods and some medical applications, including the hyperthermia, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), magnetic separation and drug delivery of cobalt ferrite nanoparticles.

Abstract
Background Advances in medical knowledge and treatment modalities have resulted in an increased survival rate for high-risk infants. This increased number of survivors enables study of the future development of these children. Other than infection and trauma, developmental and behavioral problems are the most common medical problems among such children. This study sought correlations between anthropometric indices at birth and developmental delay in children aged 4–60 months who visited health service centers affiliated with the Isfahan University of Medical Sciences in 2010. Methods In this descriptive, correlational study, 401 children aged 4–60 months and visiting health service centers were selected using a multistage method. Anthropometric indices at birth were collected from their health care records, and developmental status was measured using the Ages and Stages Questionnaire, the validity (0.84) and reliability (0.94) of which were obtained from a previous study. Results The mean age of the children in the normal group was 17.33 ± 13.18 months and that in the developmental delay group was 29.92 ± 19.19 months. Most children in the normal group were female (56%) and in the developmental delay group were male (55.2%). No correlation was found between height and head circumference at birth and developmental delay. However, the birth weight of children with developmental delay was four times lower than that of children with normal development (P = 0.004, odds ratio 4). Conclusion Birth weight and male gender were factors that strongly correlated with developmental delay in this study.

Abstract
Fifty patients with endoscopically proven pyloric-prepyloric ulcers (PU/PPU) and 50 with duodenal ulcers (DU) completed a six-week double-blind clinical trial initially comprising 124 patients. The antacid-treated patients received 10 ml of an antacid suspension seven times a day (buffering 367.5 mmol acid). Healing rate after three weeks of treatment was 74% in the antacid and 42% in the placebo group (p less than 0.01). After six weeks the corresponding figures were 96 and 68% (p less than 0.001). Regarding the PU/PPU and DU subgroups we found significant differences compared to placebo in the PU/PPU group only. Antacids caused a significantly faster and more perceptible pain relief than placebo. We found no significant correlation between ulcer healing and smoking habits. Regression analyses showed that, besides antacids, ulcer size and peak acid output influenced the healing rate significantly.

Abstract
The purposes of this research were to glycosylate lysozyme with dextran under Maillard reaction conditions and assess the antimicrobial characteristics of the lysozyme-dextran conjugate in a culture medium and cheese curd. Solutions containing lysozyme and dextran were incubated at 60 degrees C and at 79% relative humidity. Gel permeation chromatography and sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis were used to follow the glycosylation process. Under optimum conditions 3.7 mol of dextran were coupled to 1 mol of lysozyme. Lytic activity of the conjugate against the cell wall of Micrococcus luteus was about 62% of that of native lysozyme. Evaluation of the lysozyme-dextran conjugate against test microorganisms (Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli) in culture media indicated a progressive increase in antimicrobial activity, with an increase in enzyme-conjugate concentration. The lysozyme-dextran conjugate was also effective against E. coli in a natural food system, as it reduced the bacterial count by 3 log in cheese curd after 40 days of storage. Unlike E. coli, the antimicrobial action of lysozyme against S. aureus was not improved by conjugation with dextran in both in vitro and in vivo tests. Antimicrobial activity of the lysozyme-dextran conjugate against gram-negative bacteria is probably related to the remaining lytic activity as well as the excellent surfactant properties of the lysozyme-dextran conjugate. These results might increase the applicability of lysozyme as a natural antimicrobial ingredient in different food products.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to examine how the interaction between ligament tensions and contact forces guides the knee joint through its specific pattern of passive motion. A computer model was built based on cadaver data. The passive motion and the ligament lengthening and force patterns predicted by the model were verified with data from the literature. The contribution of each ligament and contact force was measured in terms of the rotational moment that it produced about the tibial medial plateau and the anterior-posterior (AP) force that it exerted on the tibia. The high tension of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and the geometric constraints of the anterior horns of the menisci were found to be key features that stabilized the knee at full extension. The mutual effect of the cruciates was found as the reason for the screw-home mechanism at early flexion. Past 300, the AP component of contact force on the convex geometry of the lateral tibial plateau and tension of the lateral collateral ligament (LCL) were identified as elements that control the joint motion. From 60 degrees to 90 degrees, reduction in the tension of the ACL was determined as a reason for continuation of the tibial anterior translation. From 90 degrees to 120 degrees, increase in the tension of the posterior cruciate ligament and the AP component of the contact force on the convex geometry of the lateral tibial plateau pushed the tibia more anteriorly. This anterior translation was limited by the constraining effects of the ACL tension and the AP component of the contact force on the medial meniscus. The important guiding role observed for the LCL suggests that it should not be overlooked in knee models.

Abstract
The motion of the unloaded knee is associated with tibial internal rotation and femoral posterior translation. Although it is known that the passive motion is the result of the interaction between the articular surfaces and the ligaments, the mechanism through which the particular pattern of motion is guided is not completely understood. The goal of this study was to focus on the tibial geometry and to identify the roles that its geometric features have in guiding the passive knee motion. The method used in this study simplified the geometry of the tibial plateaux and the menisci into basic features that could be eliminated individually. The generated tibial geometry was implemented in a computer model to simulate the passive motion. Different parts of the geometry were eliminated individually and the comparison between the simulation results was used to identify the role that each part of the geometry had in guiding the passive motion. The medial meniscus was found as the feature that promoted the tibial internal rotation and restrained the femoral posterior translation. The lateral meniscus and the medial aspect of the tibial eminence, on the other hand, were found as the elements that confined the tibial internal rotation.
