Abstract
Toxic doses of formaldehyde (FA) can cause oxidative damage and impair energy metabolism. Asprosin (ASP) and subfatin (SUB) are adipokines produced by adipose tissue that help regulate energy metabolism. We investigated the effects of carvacrol (CAR), an antioxidant with hepatoprotective properties, on ASP and SUB in rats exposed to FA using immunohistochemistry and biochemistry. We used 42 male Wistar albino rats divided into six groups of seven: group 1, untreated control; group 2, FA (10 ppm FA by inhalation 8 h/day, 5 days/week); group 3, CAR-20 (20 mg/kg); group 4, CAR-40; group 5, FA (10 ppm FA by inhalation 8 h/day, 5 days/week) + CAR-20 (20 mg/kg); group 6, FA (10 ppm FA by inhalation 8 h/day, 5 days/week) + CAR-40 (40 mg/kg). Levels of ASP and SUB, and total oxidant status (TOS) and total antioxidant status (TAS) in blood and liver tissue were measured using ELISA. ASP and SUB immunoreactivity was assessed using immunohistochemistry. The number of apoptotic cells was determined using the TUNEL method. The number of apoptotic cells in group 2 was increased compared to group 1. TOS in group 2 was increased compared to group 1. The numbers of apoptotic cells and TOS in group 3 were decreased compared to group 1. TOS was decreased in group 6 compared to group 2, but TOS was increased compared to group 1. We found ASP and SUB immunoreactivity in the liver. All alterations were reversed by addition of CAR. It appears that FA disrupts energy metabolism and CAR ameliorates the destructive effects of FA when used at appropriate doses, although CAR might be harmful at high doses.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The aim of the study was to investigate the relationship between lumbar disc herniation and Goutallier classification (GC), lumbar indentation value, and subcutaneous adipose tissue thickness. METHODS 102 consecutive patients (59 female and 43 male) with lumbar back pain, numbness, tingling, or pain in the lower extremity indicating radiculopathy who had undergone lumbar magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and had an intervertebral disc herniation in the L4-5 level, were included in the study. 102 patients who have undergone lumbar MRI in the same time period and have no disc herniation were chosen to be the control group and were selected so as to match the herniated group for sex and age. All these patients' scans were re-interpreted regarding paraspinal muscle atrophy (using the GC), lumbar indentation value, and subcutaneous adipose tissue thickness in the L4-5 level. RESULTS The Goutallier score was higher in the herniated group, compared with the non-herniated group (p < 0.001). There was no statistical difference between herniated and non-herniated groups regarding lumbar indentation value (LIV) and subcutaneous adipose tissue thickness (SATT). A Goutallier score of 1.5 provided the highest sensitivity x specificity value to indicate the disc herniation according to the statistical results. The individuals with a Goutallier score of 2, 3, and 4 have 2.87 times more likely to have disc herniation in their MRIs than the ones with a score of 0 and 1. CONCLUSION Paraspinal muscle atrophy seems to be related to the presence of disc herniations. The cut-off value of GC to indicate the disc herniation in this study might be useful to predict the risk for disc herniation regarding the Goutallier score. The LIV and SATT measured in magnetic resonance images were randomly distributed between individuals with herniated and non-herniated groups, and statistically, no relationship was observed between these groups regarding these parameters. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE The effect of the parameters studied in this research on disc herniations are expected to be an added value to the literature. The awareness of risk factors for intervertebral disc herniations might be used in preventive medicine to predict the risk and understand the tendency of an individual for disc herniations to occur in the future. Further investigations are needed to establish whether there is a causal relationship or correlation between these parameters and disc herniation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Cervical Inlet Patch (CIP) is an interesting entity that is little known and often neglected by endoscopists. It has always been reported as less than expected. In this article, for the first time in the literature, we want to measure the true prevalence of CIP in a center dealing with specific esophageal diseases. PATIENTS AND METHODS From October 2020 to October 2021, a total of 283 patients, aged 15-95 years, with mainly dyspeptic and reflux-like complaints were included in this study. All endoscopic procedures were performed carefully by a single endoscopist. Patients were examined for any possible presence of CIP, with adequate sedation and time. RESULTS The prevalence of CIP, which was the primary aim of our study, was detected at a rate of 14.8%. Most CIP was observed as a single lesion (73.8%), and many of them (45.2%) were larger than 10 mm. Plenty of patients had upper endoscopy due to dyspeptic complaints, but only 2.5% of them presented with a preliminary diagnosis of laryngeal reflux. CONCLUSIONS The true CIP prevalence is higher than reported before. Our result is the highest prevalence rate of CIP was detected in Turkey. In this regard, data coming from centers dealing with specific esophageal diseases may be more reliable and true.

Abstract
Introduction Attention deficit hyperactivity (ADHD) disorder is a common childhood neurodevelopmental disorder, and Methylphenidate (MPH) is a first-line therapeutic option for treating ADHD.However, how brain complexity and entropy changes with methylphenidate treatment the clinical implications of possible changes in entropy and the clinical implications of possible changes in entropy have yet to be studied. Objectives This study aimed to reveal how the MPH treatment affects the complexity in the brain of children with ADHD by entropy-based qEEG analysis. In addition, the presence of the relationship between possible neurophysiological changes to be detected with clinical variables and how they are two other important questions of this study to be answered. Methods During eyes-open resting, EEG signals were recorded from 25 boys with ADHD-combined type before MPH administration and at the end of the 1st month of the treatment. Approximate entropy (ApEn), sample entropy (SampEn), permutation entropy (PermEn) were used to analyse. Results ![]() ![]()
A statistically significant decrease in entropy level was found with MPH treatment in the F4 channel according to approximate entropy (ApEn) and sample entropy (SampEn) analysis (p<0.05). In addition, according to permutation entropy (PermEn) analysis, the decrease in entropy with MPH treatment in the regions indicated by F3, F4, P4, T3, T6, and O2 channels was found to be statistically significant (p <0.05). Conclusions This is the first study to investigate how MPH treatment affects the complexity in the brain of children with ADHD. Entropy-based qEEG analysis may be a new method that can be used in diagnostic, clinical and prognostic predictions in ADHD. Disclosure No significant relationships.

Abstract
Minimally invasive surgical techniques are becoming increasingly common in spinal surgery in an attempt to decrease tissue trauma during surgery, which in turn decreases post-operative pain and opioid use. The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical outcomes of a large group of patients with lumbar disc disease who underwent full endoscopic surgery. 857 patients who underwent fully endoscopic lumbar discectomy were investigated retrospectively. General demographics were evaluated in terms of mean operating time, mean length of hospital stay, mean time to return to work, complications and recurrences. Clinical outcomes were evaluated using visual analogue scale (VAS) for low back and leg pain, and Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) for functional assessment. The mean follow-up time was 36 months. The operation time ranged from 20 to 65 minutes (39 min on average), and there was no measurable intraoperative blood loss. Patients were mobilised on average 3.5 hours after the surgery. The length of hospital stay after the operation was 12-24 hours (18 hours on average). During postoperative follow-up, 19 patients required revision surgery due to recurrence (2.2%). There was one case of nerve root injury in which the patient recovered well following physical therapy, and 11 cases of paresthesia that gradually improved following 2-6 weeks of rehabilitation and treatment with pregabalin. All types of lumbar disc herniations are accessible via the full-endoscopic technique. Full-endoscopic discectomy, as a minimally invasive procedure, has the technical advantages of less paraspinal muscle dissection, less tissue trauma, less risk of spinal instability, and minimal blood loss.

Abstract
We report an infant with exogenous Cushing syndrome after being treated for 2 months with a potent topical corticosteroid via the mother's application of topical clobetasol for diaper rash without a prescription. We emphasize that potent topical steroids should be used with great caution, especially when used under occlusion (e.g., diaper area) and that parents should be warned about potential side effects of these medications, particularly when used in infants.

Abstract
Introduction Lateral osteotomy is mainly performed either endonasally or percutaneously in rhinoplasty which is a frequently performed operation for the correction of nasal deformities. Both techniques have both advantages and disadvantages relative to each other. Objective The aim of this study was to compare the histopathological effects of endonasal and percutaneous osteotomy techniques performed in rhinoplasty on bone healing and nasal stability in an experimental animal model. Methods Eight one year-old New Zealand white rabbits were included. Xylazine hydrocloride and intramuscular ketamine anesthesia were administered to the rabbits. Endonasal osteotomy (8 bones) was performed in Group 1 (n = 4), and percutaneous osteotomy (8 bones) in Group 2 (n = 4). One month later the rabbits were sacrificed. Bone healing of the rabbits was staged according to the bone healing score of Huddleston et al. In both groups, nasal bone integrity was assessed subjectively. Results In the percutaneous osteotomy group, Grade 1 bone healing was observed in two samples (25%), Grade 2 bone healing in two samples (25%), Grade 3 bone healing in four samples (50%). In the endonasal osteotomy group, Grade 1 bone healing was observed in 6 samples (75%) and Grade 2 bone healing was observed in 2 samples (25%). In the percutaneous group, fibrous tissue was observed in 2, predominantly fibrous tissue and a lesser amount of cartilage was observed in 2 and an equal amount of fibrous tissue and cartilage was observed in 4 samples. In the endonasal group, fibrous tissue was observed in 6 samples, and predominantly fibrous tissue with a lesser amount of cartilage was observed in 2 samples. In both groups, when manual force was applied to the nasal bones, subjectively the same resistance was observed. Conclusion Percutaneous lateral osteotomy technique was found to result in less bone and periost trauma and better bone healing compared to the endonasal osteotomy technique.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study is to compare the early results of monopolar (MP) and bipolar (BP) radiofrequency (RF) used in inferior turbinate hypertrophy treatment concerning aspects of patient and surgeon comfort. STUDY DESIGN Prospective randomized single-blind study. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study included 71 patients with inferior turbinate hypertrophy resistant to medical treatment. BP RF was applied to 36 patients. MP RF was applied to 35 patients. Patients received no other treatment during their 6 months of follow-up examinations. They were evaluated by their symptoms (nasal obstruction severity, nasal obstruction frequency, postnasal drip, nasal crusting, hyposmia, patient satisfaction, and preoperative pain) with a visual analogue scale (VAS) done preoperatively on the 1st and 7th days and then in the 1st, 3rd, and 6th months postoperatively. RESULTS No significant difference was observed comparing the symptoms of patients after BP and MP inferior turbinate RF in long-term follow-up, whereas patients treated with MP RF showed early improvement in their symptoms on the 1st and 7th days postoperatively when compared to the BP group. The application time of MP RF was longer than that of the BP group. Pain during the operation was reported more frequently in the BP group. CONCLUSION MP and BP RF treatment showed no difference in long-term efficacy. However, MP RF therapy showed early improvement in symptoms and less pain in patients than in the BP RF group.

Abstract
The basic aim of our study is to compare the results of the conventional and piezoelectric osteotomy in rhinoplasty by complete subperiosteal degloving of nasal bone to minimize soft-tissue injury. The study was designed as a prospective, double-blind, randomized, and controlled study. Setting is a tertiary referral hospital in Turkey. Ninety patients who underwent primary open rhinoplasty with osteotomy, performed by either the conventional instruments or the piezoelectric device. The complete subperiosteal degloving of the entire nasal bone was done up to the nasal maxillary sulcus, medial canthus, and nasion in all patients, independent of the type of osteotomy device used. Patients subsequently underwent median-oblique and lateral osteotomy, either with an ultrasonic device or a conventional 2-mm guarded, straight osteotome. The postoperative edema and ecchymosis were evaluated by another surgeon who was blinded to the osteotomy procedure on postoperative days 2 and 7. The edema scores were significantly increased on the second day compared with the seventh day in both groups 1 and 2. However, there was no significant difference between groups. The ecchymosis scores were slightly higher in postoperative day 2, compared with day 7, in both groups 1 and 2, but statistically not significant. This study showed that the main reason edema and ecchymosis are seen post-rhinoplasty is related to soft-tissue injury during osteotomy.

Abstract
External ear reconstruction is a controversial topic in reconstructive plastic surgery. Here, we prepared a pedicled biosynthetic flap for full-thickness, partial ear defects in rabbits. We operated on six adult female New Zealand rabbits weighing 3-4 kg. The dimensions of the lateral thoracic fasciocutaneous flap were 7 × 6 cm. The flap was elevated based on one of the bilaterally located internal thoracic arteries, which were dissected proximally. The pedicled flap was folded in two, and polypropylene mesh was sandwiched in the middle. The flap was adapted to a defect of 3.5 × 3 cm in diameter. In fact, the defect was created before elevation of the flap. Rabbits were followed up for 4 weeks, at the end of which they were killed and their ears were evaluated histopathologically. The survival rate of the rabbits was 100 %. All pedicled biosynthetic flaps were viable, but one showed partial (20 %) necrosis (1/6) and one was partially detached (1/6). Macroscopic (color, thickness, texture) and histological (polymorphonuclear leukocyte invasion in the skin, subcutaneous tissue, and at the junction between the polypropylene mesh and the flap) features of the flap were compared to the ipsilateral ear. A new technique was developed for partial external ear reconstruction with sufficient inner skeletal support and outer skin lining. Level of evidence Level NA.

Abstract
Reactive oxygen species are believed to be involved in the development of sepsis. Plant-derived phenolic compounds are thought to be possible therapeutic agents against sepsis because of their antioxidant properties. Rosmarinic acid (RA) is a phenolic compound commonly found in various plants, which has many biological activities including antioxidant activity. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of RA on sepsis-induced DNA damage in the lymphocytes and liver and kidney cells of Wistar albino rats by alkaline comet assay with and without formamidopyrimidine DNA glycosylase protein. The oxidative stress parameters such as superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activities and total glutathione (GSH) and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in the liver and kidney tissues and an inflammatory cytokine, tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α) level in plasma were also evaluated. It is found that DNA damage in the lymphocytes, livers, and kidneys of the RA-treated rats was significantly lower than that in the sepsis-induced rats. RA treatment also decreased the MDA levels and increased the GSH levels and SOD and GSH-Px activities in the livers and kidneys of the sepsis-induced rats. Plasma TNF-α level was found to be decreased in the RA-treated rats. It seems that RA might have a role in the attenuation of sepsis-induced oxidative damage not only by decreasing the DNA damage but also by increasing the antioxidant status and DNA repair capacity of the animals.

Abstract
Objective: The aim of this study was to compare early outcomes of monopolar (MP) and bipolar (BP) radiofrequency
(RF) treatment of inferior turbinate hypertrophy from the perspective of both the patient and the surgeon.
Study design: Prospective, randomized, single-blind study.
Materials and Methods: Seventy-one patients with inferior turbinate hypertrophy resistant to medical treatment.
BP RF was used in 36 patients and MP RF in 35 patients, respectively. Patients received no other treatment during a
6-month follow-up. They were evaluated for symptoms such as nasal obstruction severity, nasal obstruction frequency,
postnasal drip, nasal crusting, hyposmia, patient satisfaction, and preoperative pain with the use of a visual analogue
scale (VAS) before surgery and then 1 and 7 days as well as 1, 3, and 6 months after surgery.
Results: No significant difference was observed regarding symptoms of patients after BP and MP inferior turbinate
RF surgery in a long-term follow-up. Patients treated with MP RF showed early symptom improvement on days 1 and
7 days after surgery compared to the BP group. Procedure duration of MP RF was longer than that of BP RF. Pain during
surgery was reported more frequently in the BP group.
Conclusion: MP and BP RF treatment showed no difference in long-term efficacy. However, MP RF therapy was associated
with early symptom improvement and less pain reported by patients in comparison to the BP RF group.

Abstract
The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of rectal ozone and intratympanic ozone therapy on cisplatin-induced ototoxicity in rats. Eighteen female Wistar albino rats were included in our study. External auditory canal and tympanic membrane examinations were normal in all rats. The rats were randomly divided into three groups. Initially, all the rats were tested with distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAE), and emissions were measured normally. All rats were injected with 5-mg/kg/day cisplatin for 3 days intraperitoneally. Ototoxicy had developed in all rats, as confirmed with DPOAE after 1 week. Rectal and intratympanic ozone therapy group was Group 1. No treatment was administered for the rats in Group 2 as the control group. The rats in Group 3 were treated with rectal ozone. All the rats were tested with DPOAE under general anesthesia, and all were sacrificed for pathological examination 1 week after ozone administration. Their cochleas were removed. The outer hair cell damage and stria vascularis damage were examined. In the statistical analysis conducted, a statistically significant difference between Group 1 and Group 2 was observed in all frequencies according to the DPOAE test. In addition, between Group 2 and Group 3, a statistically significant difference was observed in the DPOAE test. However, a statistically significant difference was not observed between Group 1 and Group 3 according to the DPOAE test. According to histopathological scoring, the outer hair cell damage score was statistically significantly high in Group 2 compared with Group 1. In addition, the outer hair cell damage score was also statistically significantly high in Group 2 compared with Group 3. Outer hair cell damage scores were low in Group 1 and Group 3, but there was no statistically significant difference between these groups. There was no statistically significant difference between the groups in terms of stria vascularis damage score examinations. Systemic ozone gas therapy is effective in the treatment of cell damage in cisplatin-induced ototoxicity. The intratympanic administration of ozone gas does not have any additional advantage over the rectal administration.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this study is to investigate the feasibility of using indirect laryngoscopy for the diagnosis of difficult intubations in patients who are undergoing microlaryngeal surgery. METHODS In the pre-anesthetic examination the thyromental distance, sternomental distance, interincisor distance, neck circumference, modified Mallampati scores, and Wilson risk scores were measured. An otolaryngologist conducted an indirect laryngoscopic assessment. Direct laryngoscopic profiles were classified according to their Cormack-Lehane scores. RESULTS Forty patients underwent microlaryngeal surgery. Their mean ages, neck circumferences, Cormack-Lehane scores of the patients who had intubation difficulties were statistically significantly higher than those who did not have intubation difficulties (p < 0.05). The significant differences between the indirect laryngoscopic assessment distributions of patients who either had or did not have intubation difficulty were assessed (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Indirect laryngoscopic assessment is a simple and valuable technique that can be used for the diagnosis of difficult intubation in patients who are undergoing microlaryngeal surgery.

Abstract
Aflatoxins, the secondary metabolites produced by species of naturally occurring Aspergilli, are commonly found in food such as cereals, dried fruits and juice, wine, beer and spices. They are hepatotoxic and are well known human carcinogens based on evidence from human studies. Aflatoxins are an environmental risk factor for the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Chronic hepatitis B-infected patients are at increased risk of cirrhosis, hepatic failure and liver cancer. This study was designed to determine the serum aflatoxin B1 (AFB1 ), aflatoxin B2 (AFB2 ), aflatoxin G1 (AFG1 ) and aflatoxin G2 (AFG2 ) concentrations using high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) in hepatitis B-infected patients with or without cirrhosis and liver cancer, alongside healthy controls in Balıkesir, Turkey. The mean AFB1 and total AF levels in patients without liver cancer and cirrhosis were significantly higher than healthy controls. The mean AFB1 and total AF levels in patients with chronic hepatitis B and HCC were significantly higher than infected patients with or without cirrhosis. These results suggest that patients with chronic hepatitis B who are exposed to AFs are at increased risk for developing HCC, which might be prevented by reducing consumption of contaminated foods.

Abstract
Objective We aim to demonstrate inner ear damage caused by drilling in the early period. Healthy contralateral ears of patients who underwent mastoidectomy using drill or tympanoplasty without using drill were compared. Methods A total of 38 patients (mastoidectomy: 22, tympanoplasty: 16) who were diagnosed as chronic otitis media and were scheduled for surgery were included. Distortion product (dp) otoacoustic emissions measurements were performed on healthy contralateral ears of patients on pre- and post-operative 1. hour, 1. day, 2. day, 3. day, and 4. day. Results In mastoidectomy group, dp otoacoustic emission values on post-operative 1. hour, 1. day, 2. day, 3. day, and 4. day at a frequency of 4000 Hz were significantly lower than in tympanoplasty group (p<0.05). In mastoidectomy group, dp values on post-operative 1. hour, 1. day, 2. day, 3. day, and 4. day at 4000 Hz significantly decreased in comparison with pre-operative period (p<0.05). In comparison with pre-operative period, decrease in dp values on post-operative 1. hour, 1. day, and 2. day at 4000 Hz in mastoidectomy group is significantly higher than those in tympanoplasty group (p<0.05). In tympanoplasty group, dp values on post-operative 1. hour at 4000 Hz significantly decreased in comparison with pre-operative period (p<0.05). Conclusion Drilling used in mastoidectomy operation damage healthy contralateral ears by causing acoustic trauma. This damage can be determined by otoacoustic emissions in the early period. According to our study, hearing loss is temporary and more distinct at higher frequencies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Salivary gland tumours, which account for approximately 3% of head-neck cancers, are a heterogeneous group and thus it is difficult to identify their epidemiological characteristics. The aim of this study is to determine demographic features and histopathologic distribution of parotid neoplasms in a large sample from Turkey. MATERIALS AND METHODS This study was conducted retrospectively on 136 parotidectomy materials from operations between May 2009-May 2013. Age, gender, tumor diameter, histopathological diagnosis and surgical margin status were recorded. RESULTS The benign cases were 112 (82.4%), while the malignancies were 24 (17.6%). The accuracy rate of FNAC was 91%. There were 46 (33.8%) male and 90 (66.2%) female patients. Female/ male ratio (M/F=0.5) was two, the Warthin (WT) tumor being more apparent in males (p<0.05). Pleomorphic adenoma (PA) was detected most frequently among benign pathologies at 61.6% (69/112), while the Warthin Tumor (WT) was detected as the second most frequent tumor at 20.5% (23/112). Mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) and carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma (Ca ex PA) were detected at equal frequency at 20.8% (5/24) among malign tumors. These were followed by acinic cell carcinoma at 16.7% (4/24). While the surgical margin was positive in ten patients with malignant tumors (41.7%), all of the benign tumors were negative (p<0.01). No significant difference was detected in the age-gender of patients, tumor size and distribution of sites among benign and malignant groups (p>0.05). CONCLUSIONS Pleomorphic adenoma is the most frequently reported benign tumor almost in all global literature. Yet, the distribution of malignant tumors displays geographical differences. Based on these data, we believe that our findings will provide a significant contribution to future epidemiological studies. We think that it will be beneficial to generate awareness on parotid tumors and ensure a fight against smoking as with all head-neck cancers.

Abstract
Objective The present study reports the etiological differences, clinical features, management, and patient outcomes between infectious and noninfectious causes of epiglottitis in adult patients. Methods The medical records of 24 patients with infectious and noninfectious epiglottitis were investigated. Diagnosis was made by anamnesis and endoscopic examination. On admission, respiratory distress of patients was classified according to Freidman's classification. Results Fifteen patients were male, and nine patients were female. Their ages ranged between 24 and 69 years of age (mean, 43.4±11.6). In total, 16 patients were diagnosed with infectious epiglottitis, and eight patients were diagnosed with noninfectious epiglottitis. Of patients with noninfectious epiglottitis, two had angioedema, two had experienced organophosphate ingestion, one had experienced hot water aspiration, one had experienced hot milk aspiration, one had experienced foreign body aspiration (fishbone), and one had epiglottitis due to Behçet's disease. Sore throat was the most common symptoms of infectious and noninfectious epiglottitis in our patients. Odynophagia was the second most common symptom of infectious epiglottitis, and muffled voice was the second most common symptom in noninfectious patients. Conclusion Epiglottit is an emergency situation; when a patient is diagnosed with epiglottitis, close follow-up should be performed, and airway support should properly be maintained according to the degree of respiratory distress. Tracheostomy should be performed without hesitation, as needed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between nasal septum deviation grade and inferior turbinate hypertrophy with the computed tomography (CT). METHODS The paranasal sinus CTs of 82 patients with septum deviation were evaluated. Nonhypertrophied inferior turbinates on the deviated side of the nasal septum were accepted as the control group and hypertrophic inferior turbinates of the other side were taken as the compensatory group in the same patient. The turbinate bone, medial mucosa, lateral mucosa, septal deviation angle, and deviation volume were measured using three-dimensional CT. RESULTS The study group included 82 patients (M/F, 42/40) and ages ranged from 17 to 79 years (mean, 38.5 ± 14 years). There was a statistically significant positive correlation between the deviation angle and the deviation volume (p < 0.01). The measurements of the inferior turbinate bone and medial and lateral mucosal thickness were statistically different between the compensatory group and the control group (p < 0.01). There were no statistically significant differences in comparisons between the lateral and medial mucosal thickness with the deviation angle and the deviation volume in the two groups (p > 0.05). A positive correlation between the measurements of the deviation angle, deviation volume, and bone thickness was found statistically significant in the compensatory group (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION The compensatory hypertrophy of inferior turbinates in patients with nasal septum deviation is not only caused by mucosal hypertrophy, but also by hypertrophy of the inferior turbinate bone itself. The assistance of preoperative CT before septoplasty can be useful when deciding on the surgical technique to fix turbinate.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between the maxillary sinus volumes and the nasal septal deviation angles in patients with antrochoanal polyps (ACP). 76 patients who underwent ACP surgery were included in the study. Of those 36 patients who had multislice computed tomography (MSCT) were evaluated to calculate maxillary sinus volume. The records of paranasal MSCT of 36 healthy people without any paranasal sinus diseases or surgery constituted age- and gender-matched healthy controls. Maxillary sinüs volumes and septal deviation angles were calculated using the paranasal MSCT volume-rendering technique. Thirty-six patients in the ACP group were compared with 36 polyp side-matched healthy people. The mean age was 16.6 ± 6.7 years in both groups. Statistically, the mean value of the maxillary sinus volume was significantly higher in the ACP group compared with the ACP side-matched control group (15.1 ± 4.6 versus 12.0 ± 3.5 mm(3)) (p = 0.002). Furthermore, the mean value of the maxillary sinus volume in the non-polyp side (14.2 ± 4.7 mm(3)) was statistically higher in the ACP group compared with the side-matched control group volume (11.9 ± 3.8 mm(3)) (p = 0.024). In addition, Fifty-three of 76 ACP patients had septal deviation. While the septal deviation was on the same side with the ACP in 17 patients, it was on the opposite side in 36 patients. In conclusion, the maxillary sinus volumes increased in ACP patients compared with the healthy control group. Many patients had nasal septal deviation on the opposite side of the ACP.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The effectiveness of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) on selected diabetic foot wounds continues to be controversial. A holistic approach to diabetes and its comorbidities may be beneficial in the discussion of the proper application of this treatment modality. The aim of the current study is to evaluate the efficacy of HBOT on diabetic foot wounds and provide clinical data that may support this knowledge. METHODS The present study was a retrospective analysis of the effect of HBOT on diabetic foot lesions ranging 3-5 on the Wagner Grading System. Patients had been treated with HBOT and monitored for 12 months. The results were analyzed in relation to age, gender, diabetes duration and type, microangiopathic complications, peripheral arterial disease (PAD), history of coronary artery disease, stroke, hypertension, smoking habits, glycated hemoglobin, blood sedimentation rate, C-reactive protein, and number of HBOT sessions. Microangiopathies were evaluated as retinopathy, nephropathy, and neuropathy. PAD was determined by available color Doppler ultrasonography and/or angiographic data depending on a modified scoring system. The data of arteries from the aorta to the dorsal pedal artery were scored singly. Average scores of aorto-iliac, femoral, popliteal and pedal levels were also evaluated with this system to compare the healing results in relation to PAD. RESULTS One hundred and seventeen patients with 126 diabetic foot wounds were treated. Histories of coronary artery disease, stroke, and non-proliferative or proliferative retinopathy had negative effects on HBOT (P = 0.002, P = 0.015, P = 0.022, respectively). Depending on the scorings of PAD, the single arterial scores and average scores of aorto-iliac, popliteal and pedal levels had no relation to outcomes, while the average scores of the femoral arterial level affected the results (P = 0.048). CONCLUSIONS Diabetic foot patients with histories of coronary artery diseases or stroke and non-proliferative or proliferative retinopathy might resist HBOT. PAD at the femoral arterial level has been shown to have a significant negative effect on HBOT outcomes that should be first considered for surgery. In contrast, PAD below the knee does not seem to be an obstacle to the efficacy of HBOT.

Abstract
Nowadays road running is becoming more and more popular in our country. Road running is mostly done under improper conditions. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of running on nasal response combined with the effects of air pollutants. Twenty road runners were enrolled in the study. All subjects were male and between 20 and 41 years of age. They ran for 60 min on the right side of an avenue in the center of the city. It is in a residential area but has heavy traffic. One week later they were invited to run for 60 min through a running course away from traffic that is located outside the city center. Nasal resistances were measured by active anterior rhinomanometry. Nasal transport time was also measured by saccharin transport method. There was a reduction in nasal resistance, which was statistically significant in city center runners but was not statistically significant in those running outside of the city center after the exercise. Although nasal transport times were statistically shorter in both groups, there were no differences between two groups. Nowadays, everyone is advised to do sports. Due to increase in the number of breaths, the depth of breathing, and the reduction in nasal resistance in outdoor runners during exercise, harmful air pollution particles can easily reach the lower respiratory tract. Exercise is important for our health, but it should be noted that the environment in which we run is as important as doing sports for our health, especially in outdoor runners.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aims to investigate the efficacy of trimetazidine, betahistine and ginkgo biloba extract in the treatment of tinnitus. PATIENTS AND METHODS Complete clinical data of 90 patients (48 males, 42 females; mean age 52.3±15.1 years; range 20 to 61 years) who received betahistine, trimetazidine and ginkgo biloba extract for three months were retrospectively analyzed. The patients were divided into three groups including 30 in each group according to treatments received. Pre-treatment and post-treatment scores of tinnitus disability questionnaire were compared statistically. RESULTS There was no statistically significant difference between pre-treatment scores of tinnitus disability questionnaire among all three groups (p>0.05), while there was a statistically significant difference among the groups following treatment (p=0.019, p<0.05). After a-three-month treatment, a decrease of 19.7±15.5 units in trimetazidine group, 12.2±12.7 units in betahistine group, and 3.80±5.9 units in ginkgo biloba extract group were found to be statistically significant, compared to the mean pretreatment tinnitus disability questionnaire scores (p=0.002, p<0.01). CONCLUSION Our study results suggest that trimetazidine, betahistin and ginkgo biloba extract reduce tinnitus symptoms. However, symptomatic relief can be mostly achieved with trimetazidine treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The role of neurotrophins in allergic rhinitis (AR) has been well studied, but it has not been evaluated in idiopathic rhinitis (IR). OBJECTIVE We aimed to evaluate the nasal β-nerve growth factor (β-NGF) expressions of mast cells in patients with AR and IR. METHODS Seventeen patients with house dust mites-induced persistent moderate/severe allergic rhinitis (mean age: 29.7 ± 11.96), 14 patients with idiopathic rhinitis (mean age, 29.3 ± 10.62), and 16 healthy controls (29.9 ± 11.57) were included in the study. Nasal biopsy specimens were taken from the posterior part of the inferior turbinate from all of the study subjects. Nasal β-nerve growth factor and its receptors, pan-neurotrophin receptor p75, and tyrosine kinase A (trkA) were assessed with an immunofluorescence assay. Mast cells were determined by both an immunofluorescence assay and immunohistochemistry as tryptase-positive cells. RESULTS The β-NGF, trkA, and p75 receptor counts were significantly higher in AR and IR patients than in the control group (P < .001, for each), but they were not different between AR and IR patients. Similarly, the ratio of β-NGF+ mast cells/total mast cells and the ratio of β-NGF+ mast cells/total β-NGF+ cells in AR and IR patients was found to be elevated when compared with the control group (P < .001, P < .001, P < .001, and P = .046, respectively); furthermore, the 2 ratios were not statistically different between the 2 patient groups. CONCLUSION The increase in β-NGF-expressing mast cells does not differ between idiopathic and allergic rhinitis. Therefore, we propose that mast cells do play a role in the pathogenesis of IR as important as in that of AR.

Abstract
AIM Although recurrent tonsillitis can be the consequence of defects in immune system, the exact etiology of recurrent tonsillitis is not clear. In this study, our aim was to determine the serum vitamin D levels and vitamin D receptor polymorphism among children undergone tonsillectomy due to the recurrent tonsillitis. METHODS A 106 children undergone tonsillectomy due to recurrent tonsillitis and a 127 healthy children aging between 2 and 12 years were enrolled in this study, to determine serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D level and vitamin D receptor gene polymorphisms (Apa1, Taq 1, fok1). Serum vitamin D level was measured with ELISA (nmol/L) and receptor gene polymorphism was determined by PCR. Vitamin D serum level below 80nmol/L was accepted as insufficient. RESULTS The average serum vitamin D level was 176±79nmol/L in recurrent tonsillitis group and 193±56nmol/L in control group. There was no significant difference between the groups (p=0.13). In recurrent tonsillitis group, 18% (n=15) of children had their serum vitamin D levels below 80nmol/L. The vitamin D receptor gene polymorphism (APA1, TAQ 1, FOK 1) in each group was compared (AA, Aa, aa, TT, Tt, tt, FF, Ff, ff). There was no significant difference between the two groups. The vitamin D serum levels and receptor sub-genotypes are also compared, and there was no significant difference between the groups. CONCLUSION There is no difference between the serum vitamin D level and receptor gene polymorphism among children with recurrent tonsillitis and healthy children. But vitamin D insufficiency is more prevalent in children with recurrent tonsillitis group (18%).
