Management of Complicated Crown Fracture by Reattachment Using Fiber Post: Minimal Intervention Approach

Anterior crown fractures are a common form of traumatic dental injuries that mainly affect the maxillary incisors, especially in children and adolescents. Complicated crown fractures although less common, pose a challenge to the clinician. The main objective while treating such cases is successful pain management and immediate restoration of function, esthetics and phonetics. Since the development of the adhesive dentistry, the patient's own fragment can be used to restore the fractured tooth. Reattachment of fractured tooth fragments offers a viable restorative alternative. The procedure provides good and long-lasting esthetics, because the original morphology, color, and surface texture are preserved. This article reports management of complicated crown fracture in a young adult and a middle-aged adult that were successfully treated by reattachment technique. The teeth were endodontically treated followed by esthetic reattachment of the fractured fragment using the glass fiber post. To improve the adhesion between fractured and remaining fragment, circumferential beveling and internal groove placement were done.

Changing ocular prostheses in growing children: a 5-year follow-up clinical report

Eye loss in children can be caused by trauma, glaucoma, or cancer, and may result in anxiety and depression. Recovery after eye loss involves a replacement with a custom-made eye prosthesis, but, as the patient ages, changes in the size and shape of the eye socket can result in a sunken appearance of the child's prosthetic eye. This article describes the fabrication of a custom-made eye and the necessity of changing ocular prostheses for a growing child, with a 5-year follow-up.

A simple technique to fabricate a surgical obturator restoring the defect in original anatomical form

Oral cancer treatment involves the surgical removal of all or part of the maxilla, leaving the patient with a defect that compromises the integrity and function of the oral cavity. The postoperative restoration of esthetics, deglutition, and speech shortens recovery time in the hospital and expedites the patient's return to the community as a functioning member. The surgical obturator is the proven treatment option in such situations. This article describes a simple technique to fabricate a surgical obturator that restores patient's original dentition and facial and palatal tissue form. The obturator fabricated with this technique utilizes the vacuum formed index of patient's original tissue form and duplicated partly in heat and partly in auto polymerizing acrylic resin. Duplication of the original tissue form helps patient to minimize the immense physiological trauma immediately after the surgical resection. The obturator fabricated with this technique supports soft tissues after surgery and minimizes scar contracture and disfigurement, and thus may have a positive effect on the patients' psychology.
