Abstract
It is desirable to obtain high levels of viable Lacticaseibacillus paracasei, a widely used food probiotic whose antibacterial activity and potential application in milk remain largely uninvestigated. Here, we isolated and purified the L. paracasei strain XLK 401 from food-grade blueberry ferments and found that it exhibited strong antibacterial activity against both gram-positive and gram-negative foodborne pathogens, including Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella paratyphi B, Escherichia coli O157, and Shigella flexneri. Then, we applied alternating tangential flow (ATF) technology to produce viable L. paracasei XLK 401 cells and its cell-free supernatant (CFS). Compared with the conventional fed-batch method, 22 h of ATF-based processing markedly increased the number of viable cells of L. paracasei XLK 401 to 12.14 ± 0.13 log cfu/mL. Additionally, the CFS exhibited good thermal stability and pH tolerance, inhibiting biofilm formation in the abovementioned foodborne pathogens. According to liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis, organic acids were the main antibacterial components of XLK 401 CFS, accounting for its inhibition activity. Moreover, the CFS of L. paracasei XLK 401 effectively inhibited the growth of multidrug-resistant gram-positive Staph. aureus and gram-negative E. coli O157 pathogens in milk, and caused a reduction in the pathogenic cell counts by 6 to 7 log cfu/mL compared with untreated control, thus considerably maintaining the safety of milk samples. For the first time to our knowledge, ATF-based technology was employed to obtain viable L. paracasei on a large scale, and its CFS could serve as a broad-spectrum biopreservative for potential application against foodborne pathogens in milk products.

Abstract
The microbiome in a specific human organ has been well-studied, but few reports have investigated the multi-organ microbiome as a whole. Here, we aim to analyse the intra-individual inter-organ and intra-organ microbiome in deceased humans. We collected 1608 samples from 53 sites of 7 surface organs (oral cavity, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, appendix, large intestine and skin; n = 33 subjects) and performed microbiome profiling, including 16S full-length sequencing. Microbial diversity varied dramatically among organs, and core microbial species co-existed in different intra-individual organs. We deciphered microbial changes across distinct intra-organ sites, and identified signature microbes, their functional traits, and interactions specific to each site. We revealed significant microbial heterogeneity between paired mucosa-lumen samples of stomach, small intestine, and large intestine. Finally, we established the landscape of inter-organ relationships of microbes along the digestive tract. Therefore, we generate a catalogue of bacterial composition, diversity, interaction, functional traits, and bacterial translocation in human at inter-organ and intra-organ levels.

Abstract
The present study aimed to investigate the clinical features, prognosis, and treatment of advanced-stage non-nasal type extranodal natural killer/T-cell lymphoma (ENKTCL). This real-world study retrospectively reviewed 56 newly diagnosed advanced-stage non-nasal type ENKTCL patients from two large-scale Chinese cancer centers in the last 10-15 years and screened 139 newly diagnosed advanced-stage nasal type ENKTCLs admitted during the same period for comparison. The non-nasal type ENKTCLs exhibited significantly higher Ki-67 expression levels compared to nasal type disease (P = 0.011). With a median follow-up duration of 75.03 months, the non-nasal group showed slightly inferior survival outcomes without statistically significant differences compared to the nasal group (median overall survival (OS): 14.57 vs. 21.53 months, 5-year OS: 28.0% vs. 38.5%, P = 0.120). Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) score ≥ 2 (hazard ratio (HR) = 2.18, P = 0.039) and lactic dehydrogenase (LDH) elevation (HR = 2.44, P = 0.012) were significantly correlated with worse OS in the non-nasal group. First-line gemcitabine-based chemotherapy regimens showed a trend toward slightly improved efficacy and survival outcomes compared to non-gemcitabine-based ones in the present cohort of non-nasal ENKTCLs (objective response rate: 91.7% vs. 63.6%, P = 0.144; complete response rate: 50.0% vs. 33.3%, P = 0.502; median progression-free survival: 10.43 vs. 3.40 months, P = 0.106; median OS: 25.13 vs. 9.30 months, P = 0.125), which requires further validation in larger sample size studies. Advanced-stage non-nasal type patients could achieve comparable prognosis with nasal cases after rational therapy. The modified nomogram-revised index (including age, ECOG score, and LDH) and modified international prognostic index (including age, ECOG score, LDH, and number of extranodal involvement) functioned effectively for prognostic stratification in non-nasal type ENKTCLs.

Abstract
The present study aims to establish comprehensive evaluation models of physical fitness of the elderly based on machine learning, and provide an important basis to monitor the elderly's physique. Through stratified sampling, the elderly aged 60 years and above were selected from 10 communities in Nanchang City. The physical fitness of the elderly was measured by the comprehensive physical assessment scale based on our previous study. Fuzzy neural network (FNN), support vector machine (SVM) and random forest (RF) models for comprehensive physical evaluation of the elderly people in communities were constructed respectively. The accuracy, sensitivity and specificity of the comprehensive physical fitness evaluation models constructed by FNN, SVM and RF were above 0.85, 0.75 and 0.89, respectively, with the FNN model possessing the best prediction performance. FNN, RF and SVM models are valuable in the comprehensive evaluation and prediction of physical fitness, which can be used as tools to carry out physical evaluation of the elderly.

Abstract
The high host genetic background of tissue biopsies hinders the application of shotgun metagenomic sequencing in characterizing the tissue microbiota. We proposed an optimized method that removed host DNA from colon biopsies and examined the effect on metagenomic analysis. Human or mouse colon biopsies were divided into two groups, with one group undergoing host DNA depletion and the other serving as the control. Host DNA was removed through differential lysis of mammalian and bacterial cells before sequencing. The impact of host DNA depletion on microbiota was compared based on phylogenetic diversity analyses and regression analyses. Removing host DNA enhanced bacterial sequencing depth and improved species discovery, increasing bacterial reads by 2.46 ± 0.20 folds while reducing host reads by 6.80% ± 1.06%. Moreover, 2.40 times more of bacterial species were detected after host DNA depletion. This was confirmed from mouse colon tissues, increasing bacterial reads by 5.46 ± 0.42 folds while decreasing host reads by 10.2% ± 0.83%. Similarly, significantly more bacterial species were detected in the mouse colon tissue upon host DNA depletion (P < 0.001). Furthermore, an increased microbial richness was evident in the host DNA-depleted samples compared with non-depleted controls in human colon biopsies and mouse colon tissues (P < 0.001). Our optimized method of host DNA depletion improves the sensitivity of shotgun metagenomic sequencing in bacteria detection in the biopsy, which may yield a more accurate taxonomic profile of the tissue microbiota and identify bacteria that are important for disease initiation or progression.

Abstract
The study investigated the treatment and prognosis of advanced-stage extranodal natural killer/T-cell lymphoma (ENKTL). With a median follow-up of 75.03 months, the median overall survival (mOS) for the 195 newly diagnosed stage III/IV ENKTL patients was 19.43 months, and estimated 1-, 2-, 3- and 5-year OS were 59.5%, 46.3%, 41.8% and 35.1%, respectively. Chemotherapy (CT) + radiotherapy (RT) compared to CT alone (P = .007), and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) compared to non-HSCT (P < .001), both improved OS. For patients ≤60 years and ineligible for HSCT, other therapies with complete remission led to comparable OS (P = .141). Nine patients ever treated with chidamide achieved a median progression-free survival (mPFS) and mOS of 53.63 (range, 3.47-92.33) and 54.80 (range, 5.50-95.70) months, and four with chidamide maintenance therapy (MT) achieved a mPFS and mOS of 55.83 (range, 53.27-92.33) and 60.65 (range, 53.70-95.70) months, possibly providing an alternative option for non-HSCT patients. Non-anthracycline (ANT)- compared to ANT-, asparaginase (Aspa)- compared to non-Aspa- and gemcitabine (Gem)- compared to non-Gem-based regimens, prolonged PFS (P = .031; P = .005; P = .009) and OS (P = .010; P = .086; P = .003), respectively. Multivariate analysis demonstrated that Gem-based regimens improved PFS (HR = 0.691, P = .061) and OS (HR = 0.624, P = .037). Gem + Aspa combinations slightly improved PFS and OS compared to regimens containing Gem or Aspa alone (P > 0.05). First-line "intensive therapy," including CT (particularly Gem + Aspa regimens), RT, HSCT and alternative chidamide MT, was proposed and could improve long-term survival for advanced-stage ENKTLs. Ongoing prospective clinical studies may shed further light on the value of chidamide MT.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Simulation is an increasingly used novel method for the education of medical professionals. This study aimed to systematically review the efficacy of high-fidelity (HF) simulation compared with low-fidelity (LF) simulation or no simulation in advanced life support (ALS) training. METHODS A comprehensive search of the PubMed, Chinese Biomedicine Database, Embase, CENTRAL, ISI, and China Knowledge Resource Integrated Database was performed to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that evaluated the use of HF simulation in ALS training. Quality assessment was based on the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions version 5.0.1. The primary outcome was the improvement of knowledge and skill performance. The secondary outcomes included the participants' confidence and satisfaction at the course conclusion, skill performance at one year, skill performance in actual resuscitation, and patient outcomes. Data were synthesized using the RevMan 5.4 software. RESULTS Altogether, 25 RCTs with a total of 1,987 trainees were included in the meta-analysis. In the intervention group, 998 participants used HF manikins, whereas 989 participants received LF simulation-based or traditional training (classical training without simulation). Pooled data from the RCTs demonstrated a benefit in improvement of knowledge [standardized mean difference (SMD) = 0.38; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.18-0.59, P = 0.0003, I2 = 70%] and skill performance (SMD = 0.63; 95% CI: 0.21-1.04, P = 0.003, I2 = 92%) for HF simulation when compared with LF simulation and traditional training. The subgroup analysis revealed a greater benefit in knowledge with HF simulation compared with traditional training at the course conclusion (SMD = 0.51; 95% CI: 0.20-0.83, P = 0.003, I2 = 61%). Studies measuring knowledge at three months, skill performance at one year, teamwork behaviors, participants' satisfaction and confidence demonstrated no significant benefit for HF simulation. CONCLUSIONS Learners using HF simulation more significantly benefited from the ALS training in terms of knowledge and skill performance at the course conclusion. However, further research is necessary to enhance long-term retention of knowledge and skill in actual resuscitation and patient's outcomes.

Abstract
This study analyzed the clinical and imaging data of 81 glioma patients who underwent brain synthetic MRI and diffusion weighted imaging (DWI) examination in the General Hospital of Ningxia Medical University from August 2020 to September 2021 to explore the value of synthetic MRI relaxation quantitative value in predicting the genotype of isocitrate dehydrogenase 1 (IDH1) in gliomas. There were 44 males and 37 females, those patients with an aged 50.0 (36.5, 59.0) years. The tumor pre-T1, pre-T2, pre-PD, post-T1 and ADC values were obtained by outlining the region of interest (ROI). Univariate analysis was used to compare the differences of parameter values between groups, and the receiver operating characteristic was used to evaluate the diagnostic efficacy of each parameter value in predicting glioma IDH1 genotype. The results showed that the pre-T1 and pre-PD values [M (Q1, Q3)] of IDH1m glioma were lower than those of IDH1w glioma [1 462.75 (1 306.41, 1 567.75) ms vs 1 532.83 (1 434.67, 1 617.67) ms, 84.18 (82.28, 86.41) pu vs 85.85 (84.65, 86.90) pu] (all P<0.05). The post-T1 and ADC values of IDH1m glioma were higher than those of IDH1w glioma [1 054.50 (631.92, 1 262.63) ms vs 669.67 (535.17, 823.33) ms, 1.20 (0.86, 1.35) ×10-3 mm2/s vs 0.80 (0.76, 0.93) ×10-3 mm2/s] (all P<0.05). The AUC of the combined model (pre-T1+pre-PD+post-T1+ADC+Age) is 0.828 (95%CI:0.729-0.903). Synthetic MRI relaxation quantitative values are helpful to distinguish IDH1 genotypes in glioma. The diagnostic efficacy of the multi-parameter combined model based on pre-T1, pre-PD, post-T1, ADC, and age is better than that of the single parameter, and it can be used as an effective strategy to improve the differential diagnosis ability of gliomas molecular markers.

Abstract
Carnobacterium maltaromaticum was found to be specifically depleted in female patients with colorectal cancer (CRC). Administration of C. maltaromaticum reduces intestinal tumor formation in two murine CRC models in a female-specific manner. Estrogen increases the attachment and colonization of C. maltaromaticum via increasing the colonic expression of SLC3A2 that binds to DD-CPase of this bacterium. Metabolomic and transcriptomic profiling unveils the increased gut abundance of vitamin D-related metabolites and the mucosal activation of vitamin D receptor (VDR) signaling in C. maltaromaticum-gavaged mice in a gut microbiome- and VDR-dependent manner. In vitro fermentation system confirms the metabolic cross-feeding of C. maltaromaticum with Faecalibacterium prausnitzii to convert C. maltaromaticum-produced 7-dehydrocholesterol into vitamin D for activating the host VDR signaling. Overall, C. maltaromaticum colonizes the gut in an estrogen-dependent manner and acts along with other microbes to augment the intestinal vitamin D production to activate the host VDR for suppressing CRC.

Abstract
The effective prevention and control of non-filamentous bulking is a significant challenge. In this study, the underlying effect of quorum sensing (QS) on inducing non-filamentous bulking and the maintenance effect of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) on sludge floc stability, aggregation and settleability based on the quorum quenching (QQ) activity during non-filamentous bulking were investigated. The results showed that the concentration of N-acyl homoserine lactone (AHL) increased significantly in the activated sludge system at a high organic load rate (OLR), triggering the AHL-mediated QS. Additionally, the triggered QS promoted exopolysaccharide secretion, reducing the surface charge and hydrophobicity of the sludge aggregates, and further deteriorating the settleability of the sludge aggregates. AgNPs, a quorum sensing inhibitor (QSI), inhibited the AHL-QS based on QQ activity under high OLR, which maintained the physicochemical properties of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). AgNPs-QQ maintained the surface energy barrier and electrostatic barrier of sludge aggregates and the gel properties of exopolysaccharides, which is favorable for microbial aggregation. The appropriate concentrations of AgNPs (≤10 mg/L) had no negative effect on biological nutrient removal in the sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) at the high organic loading. Therefore, AgNPs effectively prevent and control non-filamentous bulking by their QQ activity in the activated sludge process. Thus, the present study provided new insights into controlling non-filamentous bulking during the activated sludge process.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the outcome of patients with esophagogastric junction cancer undergoing thoracoscopic laparoscopy-assisted Ivor-Lewis resection. Methods: Eighty-four patients who were diagnosed with esophagogastric junction cancer and underwent Ivor-Lewis resection assisted by thoracoscopic laparoscopy at the National Cancer Center from October 2019 to April 2022 were collected. The neoadjuvant treatment mode, surgical safety and clinicopathological characteristics were analyzed. Results: Siewert type Ⅱ (92.8%) and adenocarcinoma (95.2%) were predominant in the cases. A total of 2 774 lymph nodes were dissected in 84 patients. The average number was 33 per case, and the median was 31. Lymph node metastasis was found in 45 patients, and the lymph node metastasis rate was 53.6% (45/84). The total number of lymph node metastasis was 294, and the degree of lymph node metastasis was 10.6%(294/2 774). Among them, abdominal lymph nodes (100%, 45/45) were more likely to metastasize than thoracic lymph nodes (13.3%, 6/45). Sixty-eight patients received neoadjuvant therapy before surgery, and nine patients achieved pathological complete remission (pCR) (13.2%, 9/68). Eighty-three patients had negative surgical margins and underwent R0 resection (98.8%, 83/84). One patient, the intraoperative frozen pathology suggested resection margin was negative, while vascular tumor thrombus was seen on the postoperative pathological margin, R1 resection was performed (1.2%, 1/84). The average operation time of the 84 patients was 234.5 (199.3, 275.0) minutes, and the intraoperative blood loss was 90 (80, 100) ml. One case of intraoperative blood transfusion, one case of postoperative transfer to ICU ward, two cases of postoperative anastomotic leakage, one case of pleural effusion requiring catheter drainage, one case of small intestinal hernia with 12mm poke hole, no postoperative intestinal obstruction, chyle leakage and other complications were observed. The number of deaths within 30 days after surgery was 0. Number of lymph nodes dissection, operation duration, and intraoperative blood loss were not related to whether neoadjuvant therapy was performed (P>0.05). Preoperative neoadjuvant chemotherapy combined with radiotherapy or immunotherapy was not related to whether postoperative pathology achieved pCR (P>0.05). Conclusion: Laparoscopic-assisted Ivor-Lewis surgery for esophagogastric junction cancer has a low incidence of intraoperative and postoperative complications, high safety, wide range of lymph node dissection, and sufficient margin length, which is worthy of clinical promotion.

Abstract
Flower color is a trait that affects the ornamental value of a plant. Camellia sasanqua is a horticultural plant with rich flower color, but little is known about the regulatory mechanism of color diversity in this plant. Here, the anthocyanin profile of 20 C. sasanqua cultivars revealed and quantified 11 anthocyanin derivatives (five delphinidin-based and six cyanidin-based anthocyanins) for the first time. Cyanidin-3-O-(6-O-(E)-p-coumaroyl)-glucoside was the main contributor to flower base color, and the accumulation of cyanidin and delphinidin derivatives differed in the petals. To further explore the molecular mechanism of color divergence, a transcriptome analysis was performed using C. sasanqua cultivars 'YingYueYe', 'WanXia', 'XueYueHua', and'XiaoMeiGui'. The co-expression network related to differences in delphinidin and cyanidin derivatives accumulation was identified. Eleven candidate genes encoding key enzymes (e.g., F3H, F3'H, and ANS) were involved in anthocyanin biosynthesis. Moreover, 27 transcription factors were screened as regulators of the two types of accumulating anthocyanins. The association was suggested by correlation analysis between the expression levels of the candidate genes and the different camellia cultivars. We concluded that cyanidin and delphinidin derivatives are the major drivers of color diversity in C. sasanqua. This finding provides valuable resources for the study of flower color in C. sasanqua and lays a foundation for genetic modification of anthocyanin biosynthesis.

Abstract
The javanicus-group of Glyphiulus is re-assessed and its Chinese component species are presently divided between the following two newly-circumscribed species groups, i.e. the formosus- and the sinensis-group. The two can be differentiated, based on the diagnostic characters of the first pair of legs in the male. In addition, metatergal crests being complete and the carinotaxy formula on the collum being I-III+P+M are only characteristic of the formosus-group. A molecular phylogeny of the genus, based on DNA sequencing of four gene fragments of four genes, allows for Glyphiulus to be recovered as a monophyletic group, the phylogenetic relationship being ((Clade A, Clade B), Clade C). Molecular evidence is fully congruent with the morphological one. In addition, based on barcoding data, interspecific p-distances between Glyphiulus species amount to 11.2-24.9%, vs. 0-8.2% for intraspecific p-distances. Five new species of Glyphiulus, all cavernicolous, are described from China: G.sinuatoprocessus Zhao & Liu, sp. nov., G.conuliformis Zhao & Liu, sp. nov. (both from Guangdong Province), G.xiniudong Zhao & Liu, sp. nov., G.scutatus Zhao & Liu, sp. nov. and G.portaliformis Zhao & Liu, sp. nov. (all three from Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region). The known Chinese species of the formosus-group appear to mainly be confined to the South China region.

Abstract
CONTEXT Ovarian tissue cryopreservation is effective in preserving fertility in cancer patients who have concerns about fertility loss due to cancer treatment. However, ischemia reduces the lifespan of grafts. Microvascular transplantation of cryopreserved whole ovary may allow immediate revascularisation, but the damage incurred during the cryopreservation procedure may cause follicular depletion; hence, preventing chilling injury would help maintain ovarian function. AIM This study was designed to investigate the beneficial effects of antifreeze protein III (AFP III) on rabbit ovary cryopreservation. METHODS Ovaries (n =25) obtained from 5-month-old female rabbits (n =13) were frozen by slow freezing and vitrification. Cryoprotectant media were supplemented with and without 1mg/mL of AFP III. The experiment was divided into five groups: fresh control group (F), slow freezing group (S), slow freezing group with AFP III (AFP III-S), vitrification group (V) and vitrification group with AFP III (AFP III-V). All groups of ovaries were examined by histological characteristics analysis, ultrastructural analysis, apoptosis detection and follicle viability test. KEY RESULTS With slow freezing, the normal rate of change in follicle morphology, density of stromal cells and the survival rate of follicles in the AFP III supplemented group were significantly higher than those in the non-supplemented group, and a lower oocyte apoptotic rate was shown in the AFP III supplemented group. In the vitrification groups, the normal rate of change in follicle morphology and density of stromal cells in the AFP III supplemented group were significantly higher than those in the non-supplemented group, and a lower oocyte apoptotic rate was found in the AFP III supplemented group. But there was no obvious difference in the survival rate of follicles between the two groups. There was also no significant difference in the normal rate of change in follicle morphology, the survival rate of follicles and the apoptotic rate of oocytes between the vitrification and slow freezing groups (P >0.05), but the density of stromal cells in the vitrification groups was statistically higher than that of the slow freezing group (P <0.05). CONCLUSIONS The addition of AFP III in slow freezing and vitrification could improve the cryoprotective effect of ovaries, which was more evident in slow freezing. IMPLICATIONS The findings of this study provide a foundation for further research on the effects of AFP III in human ovarian tissue.

The following nomenclatorial acts are proposed: Didrepanephorusbirmanicus (Arrow, 1907), comb. nov., Didrepanephorusfukinukii (Muramoto & Araya, 2000), comb. nov., Fruhstorferiabaron (Prokofiev, 2013), comb. nov., and Fruhstorferiaanthracina Ohaus, 1903, comb. rev.Didrepanephorustangzhaoyangi Zhao & Liu, sp. nov. is described from Yunnan Province, China. A lectotype is designated for Fruhstorferiabirmanica Arrow, 1907. Didrepanephorusmizunumai Nagai & Hirasawa, 1991 is reported from Myanmar for the first time.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Streptococcus thermophilus was identified to be depleted in patients with colorectal cancer (CRC) by shotgun metagenomic sequencing of 526 multicohort fecal samples. Here, we aim to investigate whether this bacterium could act as a prophylactic for CRC prevention. METHODS The antitumor effects of S thermophilus were assessed in cultured colonic epithelial cells and in 2 murine models of intestinal tumorigenesis. The tumor-suppressive protein produced by S thermophilus was identified by mass spectrometry and followed by β-galactosidase activity assay. The mutant strain of S thermophilus was constructed by homologous recombination. The effect of S thermophilus on the gut microbiota composition was assessed by shotgun metagenomic sequencing. RESULTS Oral gavage of S thermophilus significantly reduced tumor formation in both Apcmin/+ and azoxymethane-injected mice. Coincubation with S thermophilus or its conditioned medium decreased the proliferation of cultured CRC cells. β-Galactosidase was identified as the critical protein produced by S thermophilus by mass spectrometry screening and β-galactosidase activity assay. β-Galactosidase secreted by S thermophilus inhibited cell proliferation, lowered colony formation, induced cell cycle arrest, and promoted apoptosis of cultured CRC cells and retarded the growth of CRC xenograft. The mutant S thermophilus without functional β-galactosidase lost its tumor-suppressive effect. Also, S thermophilus increased the gut abundance of known probiotics, including Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus via β-galactosidase. β-Galactosidase-dependent production of galactose interfered with energy homeostasis to activate oxidative phosphorylation and downregulate the Hippo pathway kinases, which partially mediated the anticancer effects of S thermophilus. CONCLUSION S thermophilus is a novel prophylactic for CRC prevention in mice. The tumor-suppressive effect of S thermophilus is mediated at least by the secretion of β-galactosidase.

Abstract
Objective: To explore the influencing factors on perinatal mortality of pregnant women with HIV infection to reduce the mother-to-child transmission in Sichuan province. Methods: In this study, 4 786 perinatal infants of the HIV-infected pregnant women were included. Related data on perinatal epidemiology was reported by all the 183 medical and health care institutions where the HIV prevention of mother-to-child transmission program was initiated in 2005-2016. Univariate χ(2) test and multivariate logistic regression methods were used to analyze the perinatal mortality outcomes and influencing factors. Results: The overall perinatal mortality rate was 25.7‰ (123/4 786) among HIV-infected pregnant women, with annual downwarding trend (trend χ(2)=32.220, P=0.000). Perinatal mortality rate appeared the highest (χ(2)=4.130, P=0.042), with more fetal deaths and stillbirths and less early neonatal death within 7 days in Liangshan county (χ(2)=29.626, P=0.000). Results from the multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that fewer pregnant numbers would contribute to the, lower perinatal mortality rate (1-2 pregnancies OR=0.417, 95%CI: 0.184-0.943; 3-4 pregnancies OR=0.447, 95%CI: 0.223-0.895). Perinatal deaths were more likely to be prevented if LPV/r protease inhibitor-based triple antiviral therapy was provided (OR=0.530, 95%CI: 0.285- 0.986) or delivery was taken place in the hospital (hospital of municipal-level and above OR=0.222, 95%CI:0.098-0.499; county-level hospital OR=0.282, 95%CI: 0.166-0.480; township-level hospital OR=0.134, 95%CI: 0.031-0.586) among HIV-infected pregnant women. However, premature delivery or neonatal asphyxia would increase the risk of perinatal mortality (premature delivery OR=8.285, 95%CI: 5.073-13.533; neonatal asphyxia OR=9.624, 95%CI: 4.625-20.028). Conclusions: The perinatal mortality rate of HIV-infected pregnant women appeared significantly higher than that in the province or the whole country. Strategies involving LPV/r-based triple antiviral therapy, promotion of hospital delivery, reducing the incidence rates of premature deliveries and neonatal asphyxia, should be strengthened.

Abstract
Objective: To analyze the association of two single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) [Calcitonin gene related peptide (CGRP) rs155209 and receptor activity modifying protein 1 (RAMP1) rs3754701] and the prognosis of chronic hepatitis B patients who were under interferon therapy. Methods: A total of 317 patients and their anticoagulant blood samples were collected in this study. The SNPs in the CGRP and region RAMP1 were genotyped using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time of flight mass spectrometry. Logistic regression method was used to assess the results from different phenotypic outcomes between cases and controls, after adjusted for sex and age in co-dominant, dominant and recessive genetic models. Results: Data from this study clearly demonstrated the relevance of CGRP rs155209 and RAMP1 rs3754701 with DNA response and ALT response. RAMP1 rs3754701T was strongly associated with both DNA response and ALT response (OR=2.277, 95%CI: 1.386-3.741, P=0.001; OR=1.694, 95%CI: 1.073-2.675, P=0.024). However, CGRP rs155209C was less prone to DNA response and ALT response (OR=0.150, 95%CI: 0.083-0.271, P<0.001; OR=0.583, 95%CI: 0.367-0.925, P=0.022). Conclusions: Results from our study suggested that both RAMP1 rs3754701 and CGRP rs155209 were associated with the prognosis of patients under interferon therapy in Han population, from the northern parts of China while RAMP1 rs3754701T was a protective factor for both ALT response and DNA response, but CGRP rs155209C carriers were less prone to DNA and ALT responses.

Abstract
Since December 2019, unexplained pneumonia has appeared in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, and a new type of coronavirus infection was confirmed as COVID-19. COVID-19 spread rapidly nationwide and abroad. The COVID-19 has brought huge impacts to all the people and walks of life, especially to the medical and health systems. It has also brought great challenges to the treatment of patients with cancer. Esophageal cancer is a common malignant tumor in China and most of the patients are in the middle and advanced stage when diagnosed, with immunosuppressive and poor prognosis. The selection of surgical procedures and perioperative managements of esophageal cancer require all thoracic surgeons work together to figure out a reasonable system of surgical treatment and emergency response.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this study was to determine the impact of analyzing age as a continuous variable on survival outcomes and treatment selection for extranodal nasal-type NK/T-cell lymphoma. RESULTS The risk of mortality increased with increasing age, without an apparent cutoff point. Patients' age, as a continuous variable, was independently associated with overall survival after adjustment for covariates. Older early-stage patients were more likely to receive radiotherapy only whereas young-adult advanced-stage patients tended to receive non-anthracycline-based chemotherapy. A decreased risk of mortality with radiotherapy versus chemotherapy only in early-stage patients (HR, 0.347, P < 0.001) or non-anthracycline-based versus anthracycline-based chemotherapy in early-stage (HR, 0.690, P = 0.001) and advanced-stage patients (HR, 0.678, P = 0.045) was maintained in patients of all ages. CONCLUSIONS These findings support making treatment decisions based on disease-related risk factors rather than dichotomized chronological age. PATIENTS AND METHODS Data on 2640 patients with extranodal nasal-type NK/T-cell lymphoma from the China Lymphoma Collaborative Group database were analyzed retrospectively. Age as a continuous variable was entered into the Cox regression model using penalized spline analysis to determine the association of age with overall survival (OS) and treatment benefits.

Abstract
Little is known about how chronic inflammation contributes to the progression of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), especially the initiation of cancer. To uncover the critical transition from chronic inflammation to HCC and the molecular mechanisms at a network level, we analyzed the time-series proteomic data of woodchuck hepatitis virus/c-myc mice and age-matched wt-C57BL/6 mice using our dynamical network biomarker (DNB) model. DNB analysis indicated that the 5th month after birth of transgenic mice was the critical period of cancer initiation, just before the critical transition, which is consistent with clinical symptoms. Meanwhile, the DNB-associated network showed a drastic inversion of protein expression and coexpression levels before and after the critical transition. Two members of DNB, PLA2G6 and CYP2C44, along with their associated differentially expressed proteins, were found to induce dysfunction of arachidonic acid metabolism, further activate inflammatory responses through inflammatory mediator regulation of transient receptor potential channels, and finally lead to impairments of liver detoxification and malignant transition to cancer. As a c-Myc target, PLA2G6 positively correlated with c-Myc in expression, showing a trend from decreasing to increasing during carcinogenesis, with the minimal point at the critical transition or tipping point. Such trend of homologous PLA2G6 and c-Myc was also observed during human hepatocarcinogenesis, with the minimal point at high-grade dysplastic nodules (a stage just before the carcinogenesis). Our study implies that PLA2G6 might function as an oncogene like famous c-Myc during hepatocarcinogenesis, while downregulation of PLA2G6 and c-Myc could be a warning signal indicating imminent carcinogenesis.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the clinical and prognostic differences between primary nasopharyngeal natural killer (NK)/T-cell lymphoma (NP NKTCL) and extranodal NK/T-cell lymphoma of the nasal cavity with nasopharynx extension (N-NP NKTCL). Methods: A total of 89 patients with NP NKTCL and 113 patients with N-NP NKTCL from January 2000 to June 2015 were retrospectively analyzed. Clinical and pathological features, treatment responses and prognosis were compared between the two groups. Results: NP NKTCL patients showed similar clinicopathological features with those with N-NP NKTCL, except that the former had a relative low proportion of elevated lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) levels (28.1% vs. 41.6%; P=0.001). Both of two groups presented with high proportion of cervical lymph node involvement (55.1% and 42.5%; P=0.076). The 5-year overall survival (OS) rates in these two groups were 63.2% and 54.6%, respectively, whereas 5-year progress-free survival (PFS) rates were 50.7% and 45.6%, respectively. For the patients with stage Ⅰ and Ⅱ, the 5-year OS and PFS rates in these two groups were 68.8% and 55.7% as well as 55.6% and 47.2%, respectively. These were no statistically significant differences between two groups (all P>0.05). The complete response (CR) rate after initial chemotherapy in NP NKTCL group was 43.8%, which was significant higher than that of 19.6% in N-NP NKTCL group (P=0.006). Additionally, the CR rate after primary radiotherapy was 63.4% and 62.7%, respectively (P=0.629). The NP NKTCL patients with stage Ⅰ and Ⅱ who accepted radiotherapy with or without chemotherapy had similar survival times with chemotherapy alone, showing the 5-year OS rates of 70.5% and 33.3% (P=0.238), as well as the 5-year PFS rates of 56.7% and 33.3%, respectively (P=0.431). Similar results were found in N-NP NKTCL group, the 5-year OS rates for patients with radiotherapy with or without chemotherapy and chemotherapy alone were 57.4% and 33.3% (P=0.246), while the 5-year PFS rates were 49.3% and 16.7% (P=0.177), respectively. Besides, the relapse pattern of NP NKTCL and N-NP NKTCL groups was also similar, mainly involving the distant extra-nodal organs followed by lymph nodes. Conclusion: The patients with N-NP NKTCL and NP NKTCL showed similar clinical and prognostic features, however, the initial response to chemotherapy was different.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate all coding regions of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)-related gene Senataxin (SETX) in sporadic amyotrophic lateral sclerosis patients of Chinese origin. Methods: From January 2010 to December 2014, the peripheral venous blood samples and clinical data were collected from 311 patients with sporadic amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (SALS) and 311 healthy controls who were of Chinese ancestry from the Department of Neurology, Chinese PLA General Hospital.Genomic DNA was extracted from peripheral venous blood of all participants using standard methods. The coding regions of SETX were amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and screened for mutations using next-generation sequencing technology. The online software SIFT and PolyPhen-2 were used to analyze the conservation of an altered amino acid and predict the potential pathogenicity of identified mutations. The SPSS 22.0 software was used to analyze the clinical feature of all participants. Results: Tenkinds of rare and one novel nonsynonymous mutations were identified and were absent in 311 controls. Twelve (3.86%) patients carried one SETX gene mutation. Five (1.61%) out of above-mentioned 12 patients carried highly pathogenic mutations including p. Pro1868Leu (c.5603G>A), p. Pro1331Leu (c.3992G>A), p. Glu756Val (c.2267T>A), p. Leu564Val (c.1690A>C), and p. Asn144Ser (c.431T>C). Patients carried SETX mutations were not different from other patients in onset age. Conclusion: Mutations in SETX are likely to be a pathogenesis for Chinese sporadic amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Abstract
Objective:The aim of this study is to establish the characteristic of wideband tympanometry (WBT) in neonates with normal hearing. Method:Ninety newborn babies (149 ears) who had received rooming in care and passed hearing screening were randomly selected to test WBT. The screening programme consisted of distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAE) and tympanometry at 1 kHz. The eigenvalue of ear canal volume, middle ear resonance frequency and acoustic absorptivity were obtained initially to explore the influence of gender and mode of delivery on the eigenvalues. Result:①Ear canal volume: The ear canal volume varied within (0.50±0.12)ml. The statistically significant correlationwas observed between ear canal volume and gender as well as the way of delivery (P<0.01). ②Resonance frequency: the resonant frequency distributed from 128 Hz to 642 Hz (mean 328.2±125.76 Hz). No statistically significant correlation (P>0.05) was observed between resonance frequency and gender as well as the way of delivery. ③Frequency wideband absorbance function: the shape of the curve showed two peaks and two troughs. The three most values were located in 1 296 Hz, 2 000 Hz and 5 339 Hz. No statistically significant correlation (P>0.05) was observed between acoustic absorptivity and gender as well as way of delivery. Conclusion:Resonance frequency and frequency acoustic absorptivity functions of newborns are different from adults. It is necessary to establish the normal reference value of WBT for newborns in China in order to promote this technique in the clinic.

Abstract
Our aim was to investigate the prevalence of the pathogenicity island ETT2 and to examine the relationship between the ETT2 locus and other virulence factors in Escherichia coli (E. coli) isolated from piglets with diarrhea. A total of 354 E. coli strains isolated from scouring piglets were tested using PCR for the presence of the ETT2 locus. The E. coli strains were also analyzed for enterotoxins, fimbriae, non-fimbrial adhesin, Shiga toxins, pathogenicity islands, α-haemolysin (hlyA), afa8 gene cluster and autotransporter protease (sepA) genes. The results showed that 215 (60.7%) of the isolates possessed the ETT2 island. In 215 ETT2-positive E. coli strains, the virulence genes found were EAST1 (27.0%), irp2 (18.6%), paa (15.4%), STb (7.9%), LT (6.5%), ler (4.7%), hlyA (3.7%), AIDA-I (3.7%), K88 (3.7%), eae (3.3%), STa (2.8%), afaD (1.4%), afaE (1.4%), K99 (0.9%) and sepA (0.47%), respectively, and the isolates could be assigned into 25 different virulence factor patterns. In 139 ETT2-negative E. coli strains, the virulence genes detected were EAST1 (38.9%), paa (14.4%), STb (11.5%), AIDA-I (10.1%), irp2 (7.9%), sepA (2.16%), LT (0.7%), STa (0.7%), eae (0.7%), ler (0.7%), hlyA (0.7%) and K88 (0.7%), respectively, and the isolates could be classified into 13 different virulence factor patterns. Moreover, the occurrence of LT gene of ETT2-positive E. coli strains was far more than that of ETT2-negative E. coli strains.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the feature of repetitive nerve stimulation (RNS) in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and correlation between RNS and clinical features and electromyography (EMG) findings of the corresponding muscle. Methods: Needle EMG and RNS were performed in 53 patients with ALS, who were recruited into Department of Neurology of Chinese PLA general hospital during April to December in 2016. Decrement of the compond muscle action potential (CMAP) in response to RNS of different nerves and stimulus frequencies was compared. The effects of gender, age of onset, disease duration, region of onset, ALS functional rating scale-revised (ALSFRS-R) and rate of disease progression (ΔFS) on the decrement were analyzed. Results: 49.1% of patients with ALS had decremental responses to low frequency RNS (LF-RNS) in accessory nerve, which was lower in ulnar nerve (4.3%) and common peroneal nerve (2.6%). Decremental responses of accessory nerve at 3 Hz were observed in 49.1% of patients with ALS, more frequent than 30.2% at 1 Hz. None of the patients had increased responses to high frequency RNS. Patients with upper-limb-onset, longer disease duration and lower ALSFRS-R tended to have more frequent decrement of CMAP in response to RNS. The decrement with LF-RNS of accessory nerve was in concert with neurogenic damage of sternocleidomastoid muscle with needle EMG (r=0.365, P=0.007). There were 3 patients who had decremental responses to LF-RNS in accessory nerve without clinical involvement and neurogenic damage of sternocleidomastoid muscle. Conclusions: There is significant decrement of CMAP in response to LF-RNS of accessory nerve in patients with ALS, which may reveal neuromuscular junction (NMJ) impairment. It may indicated a dying-back pattern of disease progression which derived from motor neuron terminal or NMJ to neuronal soma that some patients with ALS have decremental responses in RNS without clinical involvement and neurogenic damage of sternocleidomastoid muscle.

Abstract
Objective: To observe the clinical outcome of intramyocardial dissecting hematoma (IDH) after acute myocardial infarction (MI). Methods: The clinical characteristics and outcomes of nine patients with IDH after acute MI in Beijing Anzhen Hospital from 2010 to 2014 were retrospectively assessed, and all the patients were followed up. Results: The mean age of nine IDH patients (7 males, 2 females) was (61±5) years. One patient was diagnosed as right ventricular IDH and died before surgery because of deteriorated cardiac and renal failure. Eight patients were diagnosed as left ventricular IDH, among whom 1 patient died of perioperative bleeding. The other 7 patients survived, among whom 5 cases were treated medically and 2 cases accepted surgical treatment. After 2-6 years of follow-up, the survived patients had no other complications. Conclusion: IDH after acute MI was a rare clinical event with a high mortality, and improvement of recognition of this rare condition may reduce its mortality, especially the right ventricular IDH.

Abstract
Anyons are exotic quasiparticles obeying fractional statistics, whose behavior can be emulated in artificially designed spin systems. Here we present an experimental emulation of creating anyonic excitations in a superconducting circuit that consists of four qubits, achieved by dynamically generating the ground and excited states of the toric code model, i.e., four-qubit Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger states. The anyonic braiding is implemented via single-qubit rotations: a phase shift of π related to braiding, the hallmark of Abelian 1/2 anyons, has been observed through a Ramsey-type interference measurement.

Abstract
AIM: To investigate the effect of chymase inhibitor TY-51469 in the therapy of inflammatory bowel disease and the underlying mechanism.
METHODS: Seventy-five healthy Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned to one of the three groups (control group, model group and TY-51469 experiment group) and each group had twenty-five rats. The rats of the model group and experiment group were subjected to treatment with 3.5% dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) 10 mg/kg to induce colitis. The control group and model group were subjected to intraperitoneal injection of saline, while the experiment group was subjected to intraperitoneal injection of 10 mg/kg TY-51469 each day. Five rats of each group were sacrificed on 0, 7, 14, 21 and 28 d, respectively. The degree of inflammation was assessed by histopathological scoring; flow cytometry was performed to detect the proportion of CD4+CD25+ Tregs in peripheral blood; colon tissues of rats were collected to measure mRNA and protein expression by PCR, Western blot and immunohistochemistry; serum levels of interleukin (IL)-10, transforming growth factor (TGF)-β1 and IL-17A were detected by ELISA.
RESULTS: The rats in the experiment group and model group had significantly more severe colitis than the ones in the control group (P < 0.05) before treatment on day 0; no significant difference was observed between the experiment group and model group (P > 0.05). After treatment with TY-51469, the rats in the experiment group had significantly less severe colitis compared with the model group on 7, 14, 21 and 28 d (P < 0.05). The proportion of CD4+CD25+ Tregs was lower in the model group and experiment group than in the control group; the experiment group had a significantly higher proportion of CD4+CD25+ Tregs than that in the model group (P < 0.05). The model group and experiment group demonstrated lower expression of Foxp3 than the control group; the experiment group had higher Foxp3 expression than the model group (P < 0.05). Cytokines IL-10, TGF-β1 and IL-17A were lower in the model group and experiment group than in the control group; the experiment group had higher expression than the model group (P < 0.05).
CONCLUSION: After treatment with chymase inhibitor TY-51469, the experiment group demonstrated more significantly reduced intestinal inflammation and higher expression of immune tolerance related cytokines (IL-10, TGF-β1, IL-17A) and Foxp3 which is specifically expressed in Tregs compared with the model group. Therefore, chymase inhibitor TY-51469 might ameliorate the progression of DSS-induced colitis possibly by increasing the expression of Tregs and cytokines.

Abstract
Although a series of studies have shown that VSL#3 (L plantarum, L Bulgaricus, L casei and L. acidophilus, B breve, B longum and B infantis and S salivarius subspecies thermophilus) can exert therapeutic effects on colitis, whether heat-killed VSL#3 also can exert similar effects has never been tested. The aim of the study was to investigate whether heat-killed VSL#3 exert therapeutic effects in chronic experimental colitis by inhibiting STAT3 pathway. Chronic experimental colitis was induced by dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) in rats. Rats underwent gavage once daily for seven days with heat-killed VSL#3 (0.6 g/kg/day). The disease activity index (DAI), histological score, colon length and myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity was observed. Expression of inflammatory related mediators (STAT3, P-STAT3) and cytokines (IL-6, IL-23) in colonic tissue were detected. The results showed that live and heat-killed VSL#3 have identical anti-inflammatory effects by the assessed DAI, colon length, histological score and MPO activity. Live and heat-killed VSL#3 results in reduced IL-6, IL-23, STAT3 and P-STAT3 expression in colonic tissue. Heat-killed VSL#3 have showed significant anti-inflammatory effects by suppressing STAT3 pathway.

Abstract
AIM: To investigate angiopoietin (Ang) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expression in rats with ulcerative colitis (UC) and colorectal cancer (CRC).
METHODS: Dysplasia and cancer were investigated in rats that received three cycles of 3.5% dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) in drinking water for 7 d followed by distilled water for 14 d after intraperitoneal pretreatment with 20 mg/kg 1,2-dimethylhydrazine (DMH) (CRC group). Colitis was investigated in rats that received three cycles of 3.5% DSS in drinking water for 7 d followed by distilled water for 14 d after intraperitoneal pretreatment with saline (UC group). Rats without DSS or DMH treatment served as controls. Expression of the tyrosine kinase with immunoglobulin-like and EGF-like domains (Tie)-2 and its ligands, Ang-1 and Ang-2, as well as VEGF were evaluated in the colorectum by Western blotting.
RESULTS: Compared with rats in the control group, rats in the CRC and UC groups developed the symptoms of acute colitis with diarrhea, rectal bleeding, wasting, and loss of body weight (P < 0.05). In addition, the mean length of colorectum of CRC and UC rats was significantly shorter than that of control rats (8.29 ± 0.21 and 8.31 ± 0.86, respectively, vs 12.34 ± 0.12 cm; P < 0.05). Furthermore, rats in the CRC group, but not in the UC or control groups, developed multiple tumors in the colorectal region. Western blot analysis revealed that rats in the CRC and UC groups had markedly increased protein levels of Ang-1, Ang-2, Tie-2, and VEGF in the colorectum compared to rats in the control group.
CONCLUSION: Increased expression of Ang-1, Ang-2, Tie-2, and VEGF in ulcerative colitis-derived colorectal cancer might lead to chronic colitis and pathologic angiogenesis in rats.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS TNF-α has an important role in the pathogenesis of ulcerative colitis (UC). It seems that anti-TNF-α therapy is beneficial in the treatment of UC. The aim was to assess the effectiveness of Infliximab and Adalimamab with UC compared with conventional therapy. METHODOLOGY The Pubmed and Embase databases were searched for studies investigating the efficacy of infliximab and adalimumab on UC. RESULTS Infliximab had a statistically significant effects in induction of clinical response (RR = 1.67; 95% CI 1.12 to 2.50) of UC compared with conventional therapy, but those had not a statistically significant effects in clinical remission (RR = 1.63; 95% CI 0.84 to 3.18) and reduction of colectomy rate (RR = 0.54; 95% CI 0.26 to 1.12) of UC. And adalimumab had a statistically significant effects in induction of clinical remission (RR = 1.82; 95% CI 1.24 to 2.67) and clinical response (RR = 1.36; 95% CI 1.13 to 1.64) of UC compared with conventional therapy. CONCLUSION Our meta-analyses suggested that Infliximab had a statistically significant effects in induction of clinical response of UC compared with conventional therapy and adalimumab had a statistically significant effects in induction of clinical remission and clinical response of UC compared with conventional therapy.

Abstract
AIM: To compare the effect of endoscopic variceal ligation (EVL) with that of endoscopic injection sclerotherapy (EIS) in the treatment of patients with esophageal variceal bleeding.
METHODS: We performed a systematic literature search of multiple online electronic databases. Meta-analysis was conducted to evaluate risk ratio (RR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) of combined studies for the treatment of patients with esophageal variceal bleeding between EVL and EIS.
RESULTS: Fourteen studies comprising 1236 patients were included in the meta-analysis. The rebleeding rate in actively bleeding varices patients in the EVL group was significantly lower than that in the EIS group (RR = 0.68, 95%CI: 0.57-0.81). The variceal eradication rate in actively bleeding varices patients in the EVL group was significantly higher than that in the EIS group (RR = 1.06, 95%CI: 1.01-1.12). There was no significant difference about mortality rate between the EVL group and EIS group (RR = 0.95, 95%CI: 0.77-1.17). The rate of complications in actively bleeding varices patients in the EVL group was significantly lower than that in the EIS group (RR = 0.28, 95%CI: 0.13-0.58).
CONCLUSION: Our meta-analysis has found that EVL is better than EIS in terms of the lower rates of rebleeding, complications, and the higher rate of variceal eradication. Therefore, EVL is the first choice for esophageal variceal bleeding.

Abstract
This study was purposed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of nilotinib for treating patients with imatinib-resistant or intolerant chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). A total of 23 patients with imatinib-resistant or intolerant CML were enrolled in this study. These patients received nilotinib orally 600-800 mg every day, their curative efficacy, tolerance and overal survival were evaluated. The results showed that all the patients treated with nilotinib obtained complete hematologic remission (CHR), out of them 82.6% patients achieved complete cytogenetic remission (CCyR) and 56.5% patients achieved complete molecular remission (CMR), their adverse events mostly were mild to moderate, generally were transient and easily cured; the median treatment time with nilotinib was 13.5 (1-44) months, and the median follow-up time was 40 (12-102) months. It is concluded that nilotinib has been confirmed to be effective for patients with imatinib-resistant or intolerant CML, and may be selected as a second generation of tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI).

Abstract
AIM: To evaluate the possible association between alcohol consumption and Barrett’s esophagus (BE).
METHODS: We performed a systematic literature search of multiple online electronic databases. Inclusion criteria entailed studies about alcohol and BE. Meta-analysis was conducted to evaluate odds ratio (OR) and 95%CIs for the association between alcohol consumption and BE.
RESULTS: Twenty studies comprising 4758 patients with BE were included in the meta-analysis. The risk of BE in patients with alcohol consumption was increased compared with control groups (OR = 1.01; 95%CI: 1.00-1.02), especially in case-control and cohort, European and Asian, and hospital studies, but there was a decreased risk of BE associated with alcohol consumption from American studies (OR = 0.86; 95%CI: 0.77-0.96). At the same time, there was no significant association between BE and alcohol consumption in community studies (OR = 0.97; 95%CI: 0.84-1.12) and the type of alcohol (wine, beer and liquor) studies.
CONCLUSION: Our meta-analysis found that alcohol consumption was associated with an increased risk of BE, especially for European and Asian drinkers.

Abstract
AIM: To explore the expression of microRNA-22 (miR-22) in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and its role in phenotype transition.
METHODS: Real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) was used to detect the expression of miR-22 in HCC tissues from 108 patients and in two liver cancer cell lines MHCC97-L and Huh7, which have different potential of metastasis. The expression of epithelial marker E-cadherin (E-cad) and mesenchymal marker Vimentin was evaluated by the immunohistochemistry technique. The correlation between miR-22 expression and E-cad and Vimentin expression was analyzed.
RESULTS: The expression of miR-22 was higher in HCC tissues than in matched tumor-adjacent tissues (P < 0.05). The expression of E-cad was significantly lower and that of Vimentin was significantly higher in HCC tissues than in matched tumor-adjacent tissues (P < 0.05). There was a negative correlation between miR-22 and E-cad expression (r = -0.368, P < 0.05), but a positive correlation between miR-22 and Vimentin expression (r = 1.475, P < 0.05). Therefore, mesenchymal MHCC97-L cells demonstrated high miR-22 expression, while epithelial Huh7 cells demonstrated low miR-22 expression, and the difference was significant between the two cell types (P < 0.05).
CONCLUSION: There is a negative correlation between miR-22 and E-cad expression and a positive correlation between miR-22 and Vimentin expression in HCC cells. miR-22 may be a vital factor contributing to the development and metastasis of HCC.

Abstract
Voltage-gated K+ channel (VKC) plays important roles in biology procession, especially in nervous system. Different subfamilies of VKCs have different biological functions. Thus, knowing VKCs’ subfamilies has become a meaningful job because it can guide the direction for the disease diagnosis and drug design. However, the traditional wet-experimental methods were costly and time-consuming. It is highly desirable to develop an effective and powerful computational tool for identifying different subfamilies of VKCs. In this study, a predictor, called iVKC-OTC, has been developed by incorporating the optimized tripeptide composition (OTC) generated by feature selection technique into the general form of pseudo-amino acid composition to identify six subfamilies of VKCs. One of the remarkable advantages of introducing the optimized tripeptide composition is being able to avoid the notorious dimension disaster or over fitting problems in statistical predictions. It was observed on a benchmark dataset, by using a jackknife test, that the overall accuracy achieved by iVKC-OTC reaches to 96.77% in identifying the six subfamilies of VKCs, indicating that the new predictor is promising or at least may become a complementary tool to the existing methods in this area. It has not escaped our notice that the optimized tripeptide composition can also be used to investigate other protein classification problems.

Abstract
Hypoxia is a microenvironmental factor which plays a critical role in tumor development and chemoresistance. Epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) induced by hypoxia is one of the critical causes of treatment failure and chemoresistance in different types of human cancers. Stabilization of the hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) transcription complex, caused by intratumoral hypoxia, promotes tumor progression and chemoresistance. Previous evidence suggests that hypoxia can also activate nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB), a known mediator of EMT, which is accompanied by reduced expression of epithelial marker E-cadherin and enhanced expression of the mesenchymal markers Vimentin and N-cadherin as well as overexpression of various transcription factors of EMT, such as Snail and Twist. Based on this evidence, the present study aimed to investigate whether downregulation of the p65 subunit of NF-κB or HIF-1α by small interfering RNA (siRNA) may reverse the EMT phenotype and inhibit the proliferation and induce the apoptosis of pancreatic cancer cell lines (PANC-1, BxPC3) under hypoxic conditions in vitro and enhance the efficacy of gemcitabine in the treatment of pancreatic cancer. These results provide molecular evidence showing that the activation of the HIF-1α and NF-κB loop is mechanistically linked with the chemoresistance phenotype (EMT phenotype) of pancreatic cancer cells under hypoxic conditions, suggesting that the inactivation of HIF-1α and NF-κB signaling by novel strategies may be a potential targeted therapeutic approach for overcoming EMT and chemoresistance induced by hypoxia.

Abstract
AIM: To explore the correlation between routine blood indexes and disease activity in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
METHODS: Clinical data for IBD patients and none-IBD patients were analyzed. Patients were divided into either a positive group or a control group. Hemoglobin (HGB), mean cell volume (MCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), platelets (PLT), mean platelet volume (MPV), red cell distribution width (RDW), cross-reacting protein (CRP), and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) were detected, and their correlations with disease activity of IBD were analyzed.
RESULTS: HGB, MCV, MCHC and MPV had significant differences in patients with different levels of disease activity, and were negatively correlated with inflammatory activity (r = -0.29, -0.30, -0.34, -0.38, -0.30, -0.33, -0.35, -0.36, all P < 0.05. PLT, RDW, CRP and ESR also had significant differences in patients with different levels of disease activity, but was positively correlated with inflammatory activity (r = 0.37, 0.66, 0.79, 0.77, 0.40, 0.71, 0.80, 0.77, all P < 0.05).
CONCLUSION: Routine blood indexes are significantly different in patients with different levels of disease activity, which will be helpful to the diagnosis and evaluation of prognosis of IBD.

Abstract
Gastrointestinal lymphomas can be easily misdiagnosed due to the lack of specific clinical manifestations and accessory examinations that can differentiate them from other diseases. Here we report a case of gastrointestinal lymphoma that was misdiagnosed as Crohn's disease in a patient with a family history of Crohn's disease. He was finally diagnosed with lymphoma by ultrasound-guided biopsy.

Abstract
A steady state Level III fate model was established and applied to quantify source-receptor relationship in a coking industry city in Northern China. The local emission inventory of PAHs, as the model input, was acquired based on energy consumption and emission factors. The model estimations were validated by measured data and indicated remarkable variations in the paired isomeric ratios. When a rectification factor, based on the receptor-to-source ratio, was calculated by the fate model, the quantitatively verified molecular diagnostic ratios provided reasonable results of local PAH emission sources. Due to the local ban and measures on small scale coking activities implemented from the beginning of 2004, the model calculations indicated that the local emission amount of PAHs in 2009 decreased considerably compared to that in 2003.

Abstract
The current study was to determine the predictors of survival in 491 Chinese patients with lupus nephritis (LN). All patients were evaluated and consecutively followed up from 2003 to 2010. The female: male ratio was 9.5:1, with a median age of 31.1 ± 12 years. Forty-nine (10.0%) patients were lost to follow-up and 47 (10.3%) patients died. The overall cumulative probability of survival at 5, 10, 15 and 20 years by Kaplan-Meier analysis was 88%, 77%, 53% and 45%, respectively. The log-rank test showed that the probability of survival was significantly decreased in the late-onset patients (≥50 years) ( P = 0.036), patients with hypoproteinaemia (≤35 g/l) ( P = 0.014), patients with increased creatinine (≥1.5 mg/dl) ( P = 0.002) and patients with massive proteinuria (≥3.5 g/24 h) ( P = 0.009). However, the probability of survival was significantly higher in patients treated with hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) ( P = 0.003) than those not treated with it. Based on a multivariate model, increased creatinine (hazard ratio (HR) = 2.041; P = 0.017) and proteinuria ≥3.5 g/24hours (HR=1.716; P = 0.016) were independent risk factors. Glucocorticoid (HR = 0.457; P = 0.01) and HCQ (HR=0.197; P = 0.026) were independent protective factors. Our findings suggest that renal dysfunction and massive proteinuria are independent risk factors for mortality. HCQ could improve the survival of patients with LN.

Abstract
This study evaluated the effects of different cryoprotectants and cryopreservation protocols on the development of in vivo fertilized 2-4 cell mouse embryos. Mouse embryos were cryopreserved by using propylene glycerol (PG), ethylene glycerol (EG), dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) or glycerol (G) as cryoprotectant with slow-freezing or Vit-Master vitrification protocol. After thawing, the survival rate, blastocyst formation rate and blastocyst hatching rate of the embryos were compared. When mouse embryos were cryopreserved by the slow-freezing, survival rate, blastocyst formation rate and blastocyst hatching rate of the embryos with PG were significantly higher than those of DMSO and G (P < 0.05, respectively), but there is no significantly difference among those of DMSO, G and EG(p > 0.05), and between PG and EG. When mouse embryos were cryopreserved by Vit-Master vitrification, survival rate, blastocyst formation rate and blastocyst hatching rate of the embryos with EG were significantly higher than those of PG, DMSO and G (P < 0.05). There were no significant differences among those of PG, DMSO and G (p > 0.05). In conclusion, PG was the optimal cryoprotectant for the cryopreservation of 2-4 cell mouse embryos by slow-freezing protocol. EG was the optimal cryoprotectant for the cryopresevation of 2-4 cell mouse embryos by Vit-Master vitrification protocol, which may be commonly used in clinical and laboratory practice.

Abstract
Upper gastrointestinal hemorrhage is often life-threatening. Although its clinical diagnosis is easy, it is usually difficult to find out the exact cause. The patient in this case had repeated hematemesis, melena and hemorrhagic shock, which caused great threat to life. Repeated rescues and symptomatic treatments were given. Duodenal tumor was suspected after emergency endoscopy and upper abdominal CT. During the surgery scheduled for the resection of pancreatic-duodenal lesions, arterial spurting occurred. Thus, abdominal aortic aneurysm rupture was diagnosed intraoperatively and then repaired. After inserting an aortic stent, the patient recovered. For patients with gastrointestinal hemorrhage, it is of vital importance to pay attention to uncommon causes of gastrointestinal hemorrhage and to conduct appropriate examinations. A clear diagnosis is very important for treatment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the prognostic related factors in patients with cervical adenocarcinoma. METHODS Clinical and pathological data were retrospectively analyzed in 144 patients with cervical adenocarcinoma between 1995 and 2004. RESULTS Five-year survival rates were 80.1%, 59.7%, 6.3 % and 0.0%, respectively, in patients with Stage I, II, III and IV cervical adenocarcinoma, and the overall 5-year survival rate was 59.0%. Univariate analysis indicated poor prognosis in non-exophytic tumor, tumor diameter > 4 cm, advanced clinical stage, mucinous adenocarcinoma and clear cell carcinoma, or poorly differentiated tumor. The prognosis was related to lymph node metastasis and deep myometrial invasion. Multivariate analysis indicated that besides clinical stage, myometrial invasion and lymph node metastasis, tumor shape was also an independent prognostic related factor. CONCLUSION The prognosis is associated with tumor shape besides pre-confirmed clinical stage, myometrial invasion and lymph node metastasis. Ovarian preservation in young women remains to be further explored.

Abstract
This study evaluates the usefulness of homing pigeons as a biomonitor of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in urban environments. The mean concentrations of total PAHs in liver and lung tissues were greater in pigeons from Beijing compared to pigeons from Chengdu, however, this difference was only statistically significant for PAH concentrations in liver tissue (P < 0.05). Similarly, the severity of anthracosis or pneumoconiosis in lung tissue and hepatitis in liver tissue was greater in pigeons from Beijing compared to pigeons from Chengdu. Low molecular weight PAHs dominated the contribution of individual PAHs in both tissues. Significant differences (P < 0.05) were observed for most low and moderate molecular weights PAHs in liver and for some low and high molecular weights PAHs in lung between the two cites. The profile patterns of individual PAHs were similar between lung tissue of pigeons and between local ambient airs in summer for both cities, whereas the profile patterns between liver tissue and pigeon food were less similar. These data suggest that homing pigeons may be of value as a biomonitor of environmental pollution in urban areas.
