Abstract
Objective: To explore the effect and investigate the molecular mechanism of different concentrations of total tanshinones alone and in combination with tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) on the proliferation inhibition and apoptosis of human myeloid leukemia cell lines. Methods: K562 and Kasumi-1 cell lines were purchased from the Shanghai Cell Bank of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the TKIs-resistant strain K562/T315I cell line was constructed in Molecular Medicine Research Center, Beijing Lu Daopei Institute of Hematology. Logarithmic growth phase cells were taken and divided into intervention groups with total tanshinone of 0, 2.19, 4.38, 8.75, 17.50 and 35.00 μg/ml intervention groups, which were inoculated in 96-well plates at a density of 1×104 cells/well and exposed to the drug for 24 h, and a control group treated with dimethyl sulfoxide was also set up simultaneously. All experiments were repeated independently 3-5 times. The proliferative activity of the cells was assessed using the CCK-8 assay, the apoptotic rates were measured by flow cytometry, and the expression levels of apoptosis-regulating proteins Bcl-2 and Bax were analyzed by Western blotting. The cell lines treated and untreated with total tanshinone were subjected to transcriptome sequencing and gene set enrichment analysis to identify differentially expressed genes. Results: The half-inhibitory concentration (IC50) values of 8.75 μg/ml total tanshinone at 24 h for K562, K562/T315I and Kasumi-1 cells were (4.11±0.02), (4.95±0.04) and (3.98±0.01) μg/ml, respectively. When combined with 0.25 μmol/L imatinib, 8.75 μg/ml total tanshinone could enhance the induction of apoptosis effects on K562 and K562/T315I cell lines. After being treated with 4.38, 8.75, and 17.50 μg/ml of total tanshinone for 24 h, compared with the control group, total tanshinone upregulated the expression level of Bax protein, downregulated the expression level of Bcl-2 protein, and decreased the Bcl-2/Bax ratio (all P<0.05). Total tanshinone inhibited the proliferation-related signaling pathway and DNA damage repair pathway of myeloid leukemia cell lines, and activated the signaling pathway that induces apoptosis in leukemia cells. Conclusion: Different concentrations of total tanshinoneinhibites proliferation and promote apoptosis in K562, Kasumi-1 and TKIs-resistant K562/T315I cell lines, and further enhance the anti-leukemic effect when combined with TKIs.

Abstract
Background Awake prone positioning (APP) is broadly implemented in patients with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 related disease [coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)] admitted to hospital with severe respiratory distress syndrome. This prospective observational study aimed to explore the factors influencing the implementation of APP in patients with acute respiratory failure due to COVID-19. Methods Patients with COVID-19, all hospitalized with positive X-ray findings and oxygen supplementation requirement, in the Respiratory Step-Down Unit of the Peking University Third Hospital between January 6th, 2023, and January 20th, 2023, were included in this study. Data regarding basic information, activities of daily living (ADLs) scores, oxygen therapy, vital signs, and duration of APP were collected to investigate the factors influencing prone positioning. Results Among the 134 patients included, 55.2% showed an improvement in oxygen saturation 1 hour after APP. Logistic regression revealed that the pre-APP heart rate (HR) [odds ratio (OR) =1.032; P=0.046] and peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO2) (OR =0.720; P<0.001) were the associated factors of the improvement in SpO2 after treatment. Multiple linear regression revealed that the ADL scores and pre-APP respiratory rate (RR) were the associated factors of the duration of prone positioning (P<0.01). The APP technical steering group effectively improved duration of APP. Conclusions Patients with low SpO2 and increased HR before treatment showed greater improvement in oxygen saturation. Patients with lower tolerance to ADL but lower RRs were those to demonstrate a longer duration of prone positioning. This is pointing towards establishing the most favorable time window for APP during the course of COVID-19: after the ADLs have already decreased, but before significant tachypnea has appeared.

Abstract
Objective: To construct Bayesian network (BN) models to explore the factors related to glomerular injury (GI) and tubular injury (TI). Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out. From April to November 2019, Shanxi Provincial People's Hospital performed an opportunistic screening for chronic kidney disease in 10 counties of Shanxi Province. The general data and laboratory results of blood and urine samples were collected. Chi-square test and logistic regression were used to explore the related factors of GI and TI, which were included in the construction of BN models with max-min hill-climbing (MMHC) algorithm. Results: A total of 12 269 participants were included, there were 5 198 males and 7 071 females, with a median age of 58 (40-91) years. The prevalence of GI and TI was 12.7% (1 561/12 269) and 11.6% (1 425/12 269), respectively. The BN model consisted of 8 nodes and 10 edges for GI, and 11 nodes and 17 edges for TI, respectively. BN models showed that age and glycated hemoglobin were direct related factors for GI, while gender and fasting blood glucose were indirect related factors for GI. Age, gender, fasting blood glucose and glycosylated hemoglobin were direct related factors for TI. Additionally, the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) was 0.761 (95%CI: 0.746-0.777) and 0.753 (95%CI: 0.736-0.769) for GI and TI BN models, respectively. Conclusions: BN models allow for identifying the complex network relationships among the factors related to GI and TI. Meanwhile, Bayesian risk reasoning can provide reference value for the clinical prevention of GI and TI.

Abstract
Objective: To explore the construction of a machine learning model based on unbalanced data to predict the progression of non-nephrotic membranous nephropathy. Methods: The clinical and pathological data of patients diagnosed with non-nephrotic membranous nephropathy by renal biopsy in Shanxi People's Hospital from January 2018 to December 2021 were retrospectively analyzed.The prediction models were constructed based on logistic regression, support vector machine (SVM) and light gradient boosting machine (lightGBM), respectively. The mixed sampling technology was used to process the unbalanced data, and the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) was used to evaluate the predictive performance of the models. Finally, Shapley additive explanation (SHAP) was used to interpret the results of the optimal prediction model. Results: A total of 148 patients were included in the study, including 84 males and 64 females, with a mean age of (47.2±12.5) years. The follow-up time [M(Q1, Q3)] was 14(7, 20) months. Twenty-three patients (15.5%) achieved the renal end-point event in the study. The SVM model had the highest AUC (0.868, 95%CI: 0.813-0.925), followed by logistic regression (AUC=0.865, 95%CI: 0.755-0.899) and lightGBM (AUC=0.791, 95%CI: 0.690-0.882). The feature recursive elimination cross validation (RFECV) method based on random forest (RF) and the SHAP plot based on the SVM model showed that immunohistochemistry IgG, total protein (TP), anti-phospholipase A2 receptor (anti-PLA2R), blood chloride and D-Dimer were risk factors affecting the progress of non-nephrotic membranous nephropathy. Moreover, patients with high immunohistochemistry IgG, anti-PLA2R and D-Dimer had an increased risk of achieving the renal end-point event. Conclusion: The SVM model established in this study can effectively predict the progress of non-nephrotic membranous nephropathy, and provide a new method for the early identification of high-risk patients and precision therapy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous studies have suggested that a low albumin-to-alkaline phosphatase ratio (AAPR) is associated with a lower survival rate in patients with various malignancies. However, the relationship between pretreatment AAPR and the prognosis of patients with gastric cancer (GC) remains unclear.
AIM To investigate the prognostic value of AAPR in distant metastatic GC.
METHODS A total of 191 patients with distant metastatic cancer from a single institute were enrolled in this study. Pretreatment clinical data, including serum albumin and alkaline phosphatase levels, were collected. A chi-square test or Fisher’s exact test was applied to evaluate the correlations between AAPR and various clinical parameters in GC patients. The Kaplan–Meier method and Cox proportional hazards regression model were used to evaluate the prognostic efficacy of AAPR in metastatic GC patients. A two-sided P value lower than 0.05 was considered statistically significant.
RESULTS A receiver operating characteristic curve indicated that 0.48 was the optimal threshold value for AAPR. AAPR ≤ 0.48 was significantly associated with bone (P < 0.05) and liver metastasis (P < 0.05). Patients with high levels of AAPR had better survival in terms of overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS), regardless of the presence of liver/bone metastasis. Pretreatment AAPR was found to be a favorable predictor of OS and PFS based on a multivariate cox regression model. AAPR-M system, constructed based on AAPR and number of metastatic sites, showed superior predictive ability relative to the number of metastatic sites for predicting survival.
CONCLUSION Pretreatment AAPR may serve as an independent prognostic factor for predicting PFS and OS in patients with metastatic GC. Furthermore, AAPR may assist clinicians with individualizing treatment.

Abstract
Objective: To explore the application and discovery of genotyping, gene sequencing, and gene expression analysis in the determination of ABO blood group subtypes and antigen expression abnormalities in hematological malignancies patients. Methods: From June 2019 to May 2020, three clinical cases were found with forward and reverse ABO typing discrepancy or atypical serologic agglutination pattern in the laboratory and blood transfusion department of Hebei Yanda Ludaopei Hospital were selected. Sequence-specific primer PCR (PCR-SSP) and Sanger sequencing of ABO gene coding regions were performed to determine the ABO genotypes, and whole transcriptome sequencing was used to analyze ABO and FUT1 gene expression levels. Results: A 12-year-old female acute lymphoblastic leukemia patient was determined as O.01.02 and BA.04 sub-genotype, corresponding to the serological B(A) subtype, and her ABO gene expression was normal (354.80). A 41-year-old female acute myeloid leukemia patient was determined as A1.02 and B.01 genotype, corresponding to the serological A(1)B phenotype, and her ABO gene expression was significantly reduced (45.70). A 42-year-old male with myelodysplastic syndrome and myelofibrosis was determined as A1.02 and A2.05 sub-genotype, corresponding to the serological A(1) and A(2) phenotype, respectively, and his ABO expression was negative. FUT1 expression was in the normal range in all three cases. The clinical blood product infusion strategy was formulated according to the genotype and the corresponding immunological subtype, and no significant transfusion-related adverse reactions occurred. Conclusion: Blood group sub-genotypes or aberrant gene expression can lead to ambiguities in serological blood group determination in hematological malignancies patients. ABO genotyping and gene expression analysis can help in this scenario and escort blood product infusion safety.

Abstract
Objective: To observe the effect of autophagy of tibial growth plate chondrocyte on apoptosis in chronic renal insufficiency (CRI) rats. Methods: Male 4-week-old SD rats were randomly divided into two groups: (1) Sham group: only the left ureter was exposed (n=10); (2) CRI group: the left ureter was ligated to cause CRI (n=10). The urine from all the rats was collected 6 weeks after the operation and the total protein content was measured. Then all the rats were sacrificed and the concentrations of creatinine and urea nitrogen in intracardiac blood were detected. The proximal tibia were fixed and decalcified to prepare histological sections, and the number of chondrocytes of column cells in the proliferative area of tibia growth plate was observed by saffron O staining. The expression rate of protein Light Chain-3, an autophagy marker of chondrocytes, was detected by immunofluorescence. The apoptosis rate of chondrocytes was detected by the method of TUNEL assay. The level of glycogenin-1, a glycogen formation marker of chondrocyte was detected by immunohistochemistry in chondrocytes. Results: The 24 h urine total protein was higher in CRI group [(163.5±11.3) mg vs (38.6±9.8) mg, t=25.620, P<0.001]. The levels of blood creatinine [(67.3±16.2) μmol/L vs (28.4±11.5) μmol/L, t=5.974, P<0.001] and urea nitrogen [(16.4±6.4) mmol/L vs (4.8±2.0) mmol/L, t=5.198, P<0.001] were higher in CRI group. The number of chondrocytes of column cells in the proliferating area of tibia growth plate was lower in CRI group (4.2±2.1 vs 9.1±3.8, t=3.109, P=0.006). The expression rate of LC-3 protein in chondrocytes of CRI group was lower [(27.2±12.6)% vs (51.4±18.2)%, t=3.457, P=0.003]. The level of glycogenin-1 of chondrocytes in CRI group increased significantly (6.1±2.5 vs 3.5±1.8, t=2.669, P=0.016). The apoptosis rate of chondrocytes in CRI group also increased [(17.2±4.8)% vs (5.1±3.4)%, t=6.505, P<0.001]. Conclusion: Malfunction of autophagy in tibial growth plate chondrocytes causes increased apoptosis rate in CRI rats, which might be caused by the failure of glycogen degradation in chondrocytes.

Abstract
Objective: To observe the effect of primary cilia expression rate on Wnt/β signaling pathway in tibial growth plate chondrocytes from chronic renal insufficiency (CRI) young rats. Methods: Male 2-week-old SD rats were randomly divided into two groups: (1) Sham group: only the left ureter was exposed (n=6); (2) CRI group: the left ureter was ligated (n=6). Rats were sacrificed 2 weeks after the operation and the primary cilia expression rate of growth plate chondrocytes and key protein β-catenin in Wnt/β signaling pathway were observed in histological section of tibia specimen. Chondrocytes isolated from growth plate in two groups were cultured in vitro to P3 generation. The primary cilia expression rate and the level of β-catenin were measured. The primary cilia expression rate was detected by agonists and antagonists Wnt/β signaling pathway in chondrocytes of CRI group. The level of β-catenin was detected by using serum-free culture and chloral hydrate to intervene chondrocytes in CRI group. Results: The primary cilia expression rate of growth plate chondrocytes in histological section of tibia specimen in CRI group was higher than that in Sham group [(17.5±7.7)% vs (8.7±3.6)%, t=3.237, P=0.005], and the level of β-catenin was higher in CRI group (5.1±0.7 vs 1.9±0.8, t=6.731, P<0.001). The primary cilia expression rate of growth plate chondrocytes cultured in vitro in CRI group was higher than that in Sham group [(20.9±8.1)% vs (11.8±4.7)%, t=3.073, P=0.007], and the level of β-catenin was higher in CRI group (0.49±0.12 vs 0.25±0.11, t=3.297, P=0.011). There was no significant change in primary cilia expression rate after intervention by using Wnt/β signaling agonists and antagonists to change the level of β-catenin [agonists group: (21.3±7.6)%, control: (20.6±6.8)%, antagonists group: (22.4±6.2)%, F=0.173, P=0.842]. The level of β-catenin was significantly changed after intervention by using serum-free culture, chloral hydrate to alter the primary cilia expression rate (serum-free culture group: 0.61±0.23, control: 0.39±0.24, chloral hydrate group: 0.15±0.11, F=6.476, P=0.012). There was a positive correlation between the level of β-catenin and primary cilia expression rate. Conclusion: The primary cilia expression rate and the level of Wnt/β signaling pathway were higher in tibial growth plate chondrocytes in CRI rats model, and primary cilia might have positive regulatory effects on the Wnt/β signaling pathway.

Abstract
B4C-based ceramic composites containing 0-2 vol% highly aligned graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) are fabricated. The electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding properties of the obtained composites are investigated at X-band (8.2-12.4 GHz) frequency range from room-temperature up to 800 °C. All composites exhibit outstanding EMI shielding properties with satisfactory frequency- and thermal-stability. The shielding effectiveness (SE) of GNP/B4C composites increases monotonically with increasing GNP loading. Superior room-temperature SE close to 40 dB is achieved with only 2 vol% GNPs and high SE around 35 dB still persists at 800 °C. Considering their relatively low density, GNP/B4C composites possess a high specific shielding effectiveness (SSE) of 16 dB cm3 g-1 which is among the highest values in reported ceramic-based shielding composites. Especially, the GNP/B4C composite with 2 vol% GNPs exhibits the highest SSE/t (SSE divided by thickness) values at temperatures above 200 °C for all reported shielding composites, indicating that GNP/B4C composites belong to the most promising high-temperature shielding composites. The excellent shielding properties of GNP/B4C composites arise mainly from the high electrical conductivity, high dielectric loss and the multiple reflections by the highly aligned and large-sized GNP layers.

Abstract
Determining the molecular phenotype is a key to understanding and predicting the metastatic potential and the prognosis for patients with lung cancer. Our previous study demonstrated that increased expression of cyclin‑dependent kinase 5 (CDK5) in patients with non‑small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is associated with a poorer prognosis. The present study aimed to further investigate the underlying mechanism of CDK5 in vitro and in vivo using the A549 human NSCLC cell line. A 3‑(4,5‑dimethylthiazol‑2‑yl)‑2,5‑diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay was used to quantify the proliferation of the A549 cells; migration assay and invasiveness assays were performed using Transwell chambers and wound healing assays were used to assess cell motility, which was assessed by measuring the movement of cells. Inhibition of CDK5 by roscovitine and small interfering (si)RNA was used to investigate the mechanism of CDK5 in the process of A549 lung cancer cell proliferation, migration and invasion. The results demonstrated that functional inhibition of CDK5 using roscovitine and siRNA markedly suppressed the proliferation of A549 cells and resulted in a reduced tumor mass in vivo. In addition, the hinhibition of CDK5 reduced the migration and invasiveness of the A549 cells in vitro and in vivo. Notably, CDK5 inhibition also impaired tumor cell cytoskeletal remodeling and led to loss of cell polarity, which may partially explain the reduction of A549 cell mobility and invasiveness. The results of the present study revealed that CDK5 may be important in the regulation of migration and invasiveness in NSCLC through its effects on cytoskeletal remodeling.

Abstract
Nanocrystalline ZnO films with both C-axis vertical grown and inclined angled grown were sputter-deposited onto aluminium foils (50 μm thick) and characterised for using as flexible ultrasonic transducers. As-deposited C-axis grown ZnO films were annealed at different temperatures up to 600 °C to enhance film crystallinity and reduce film stress. The C-axis grown ZnO film on the Al foil were bonded onto steel plates, and the pulse-echo tests verified a good performance (with dominant longitudinal waves) of the ultrasonic transducers made from both as-deposited and post-annealed films. Inclined angled ZnO films on the Al foil glued onto steel plates generated mixed shear and longitudinal waves in the pulse-echo test.

Abstract
This investigation was designed to determine if suppression of testosterone alters the ventilatory response to carbon dioxide in the presence of high and low levels of oxygen. Eleven healthy male subjects completed a series of rebreathing trials during wakefulness, before and after treatment with a long-acting gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist. Five subjects also completed studies during non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep. During wakefulness, subjects initially hyperventilated to reduce the partial pressure of carbon dioxide (P(ET,CO2)) below 25 Torr. Subjects then rebreathed from a bag containing a normocapnic (42 Torr), low (50 Torr) or high oxygen (140 Torr) gas mixture. During each trial P(ET,CO2) increased while oxygen was maintained at a constant level. The threshold of the ventilatory response to carbon dioxide was considered to be the point at which minute ventilation began to rise in a linear fashion as P(ET,CO2) increased. The slope of the ventilatory response above the threshold was used as a measure of sensitivity to carbon dioxide. During NREM sleep, hypocapnia was induced via nasal mechanical ventilation. Several trials were completed until the cessation of mechanical ventilation resulted in a central apnoea which demarcated the threshold of the ventilatory response to carbon dioxide. In response to treatment with leuprolide acetate, the threshold measured in wakefulness decreased during carbon dioxide rebreathing in the presence of low (41.05 +/- 0.77 versus 39.40 +/- 0.83 Torr; P = 0.01) and high (46.32 +/- 0.56 versus 44.78 +/- 0.83 Torr; P = 0.01) oxygen levels. An increase in sensitivity (4.82 +/- 0.61 versus 7.17 +/- 1.20 l min(-1) Torr(-1); P = 0.02) was also observed during rebreathing in the presence of high but not low oxygen levels. The increase in sensitivity was accompanied by an increase in carbon dioxide production. The findings observed during NREM sleep were similar to those observed during wakefulness, since the P(ET,CO2) that demarcated the threshold was decreased after leuprolide treatment (42.1 +/- 0.6 versus 39.6 +/- 0.6 Torr; P = 0.002). Additionally, the decrease in P(ET,CO2) required to induce an apnoea was greater after treatment with leuprolide (2.56 +/- 0.25 versus 4.06 +/- 0.29 Torr; P = 0.004). We conclude that suppression of testosterone decreases the threshold of the ventilatory response to carbon dioxide during both wakefulness and sleep.

Abstract
The hypocapnic apneic threshold (AT) is lower in women relative to men. To test the hypothesis that the gender difference in AT was due to testosterone, we determined the AT during non-rapid eye movement sleep in eight healthy, nonsnoring, premenopausal women before and after 10-12 days of transdermal testosterone. Hypocapnia was induced via nasal mechanical ventilation (MV) for 3 min with tidal volumes ranging from 175 to 215% above eupneic tidal volume and respiratory frequency matched to eupneic frequency. Cessation of MV resulted in hypocapnic central apnea or hypopnea depending on the magnitude of hypocapnia. Nadir minute ventilation as a percentage of control (%Ve) was plotted against the change in end-tidal CO(2) (Pet(CO(2))); %Ve was given a value of zero during central apnea. The AT was defined as the Pet(CO(2)) at which the apnea closest to the last hypopnea occurred; hypocapnic ventilatory response (HPVR) was defined as the slope of the linear regression Ve vs. Pet(CO(2)). Both the AT (39.5 +/- 2.9 vs. 42.1 +/- 3.0 Torr; P = 0.002) and HPVR (0.20 +/- 0.05 vs. 0.33 +/- 0.11%Ve/Torr; P = 0.016) increased with testosterone administration. We conclude that testosterone administration increases AT in premenopausal women, suggesting that the increased breathing instability during sleep in men is related to the presence of testosterone.

Abstract
Schemes for decolorization of broth and isolation of recombinant hirudin from the fermentation supernatants of recombinant yeast Pichia pastoris were developed to remove a great deal of non-desired proteins and coloring matters. Based on the stability of hirudin, heating is desirable to pre-treat the fermentation broth. Several different column chromatographies, including anion-exchange, cation-exchange, hydrokyapatite adsorption, hydrophobic interaction, gel filtration and their combination were investigated on the efficiencies of decolorization and isolation. Among these methods, the combination of cation-exchange and anion-exchange was found to be a success in both decolorization and isolation of hirudin.

Abstract
We hypothesized that a decreased susceptibility to the development of hypocapnic central apnea during non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep in women compared with men could be an explanation for the gender difference in the sleep apnea/hypopnea syndrome. We studied eight men (age 25-35 yr) and eight women in the midluteal phase of the menstrual cycle (age 21-43 yr); we repeated studies in six women during the midfollicular phase. Hypocapnia was induced via nasal mechanical ventilation for 3 min, with respiratory frequency matched to eupneic frequency. Tidal volume (VT) was increased between 110 and 200% of eupneic control. Cessation of mechanical ventilation resulted in hypocapnic central apnea or hypopnea, depending on the magnitude of hypocapnia. Nadir minute ventilation in the recovery period was plotted against the change in end-tidal PCO(2) (PET(CO(2))) per trial; minute ventilation was given a value of 0 during central apnea. The apneic threshold was defined as the x-intercept of the linear regression line. In women, induction of a central apnea required an increase in VT to 155 +/- 29% (mean +/- SD) and a reduction of PET(CO(2)) by -4.72 +/- 0.57 Torr. In men, induction of a central apnea required an increase in VT to 142 +/- 13% and a reduction of PET(CO(2)) by -3.54 +/- 0.31 Torr (P = 0.002). There was no difference in the apneic threshold between the follicular and the luteal phase in women. Premenopausal women are less susceptible to hypocapnic disfacilitation during NREM sleep than men. This effect was not explained by progesterone. Preservation of ventilatory motor output during hypocapnia may explain the gender difference in sleep apnea.

Abstract
Loss of lung units due to pneumonectomy stimulates growth of the remaining lung. It is generally believed that regenerative lung growth involves only alveoli but not airways, a dissociated response termed "dysanaptic growth." We examined the structural response of respiratory bronchioles in immature dogs raised to maturity after right pneumonectomy. In another group of adult dogs, we also examined the effect of preventing mediastinal shift after right pneumonectomy on the response of respiratory bronchioles. In immature dogs after pneumonectomy, the volume of the remaining lung increased twofold, with no change in volume density, numerical density, or mean diameter of respiratory bronchiole, compared with that in the control lung. The number of respiratory bronchiole segments and branch points increased proportionally with lung volume. In adult dogs after pneumonectomy, prevention of mediastinal shift reduced lung strain at a given airway pressure, but lung expansion and regenerative growth of respiratory bronchiole were not eliminated. We conclude that postpneumonectomy lung growth is associated with proliferation of intra-acinar airways. The proportional growth of acinar airways and alveoli should optimize gas exchange of the regenerated lung by enhancing gas conductance and mixing efficiency within the acinus.

Abstract
The efficacy of oral cholelitholytic therapy with chenodeoxycholic acid (CDCA) and ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) in 137 patients with gallstones was studied in relation to their CT patterns. The best dissolving results were obtained in patients with the stones in isodensity and faint category (< 50 Hu) on CT. The stones with high density or heterogeneous calcification on CT were insoluble, and therefore, were contraindicated for oral cholelitholytic therapy. The attenuation value of stones was classified as complete dissolution ranged from -2 to 35 Hu (14 +/- 12 Hu, n = 13), and their upper limit of 95 percentiles was 33.4 Hu. CT analysis improved the predictability of dissolving gallstones in comparison with plain abdominal radiography or oral cholecystography (OCG). The complete dissolving rate increased from 9.49% (13/137) in patients selected by classic X-ray to 40.7% (11/27) in isodensity category on CT. Besides, radiolucent gallstones, which showed no obvious filling defect on OCG but distinct echo and shadow on B-type ultrasonography, were also insoluble.

Abstract
It is sometimes very difficult to extract a huge impacted stone through the T-tube fistulous tract by conventional techniques with choledochoscope. To simplify the procedure, a lithotriptor PSW-G type using plasma shock wave to disintegrate the stone was designed. The efficacy to fragmentate stone was investigated both in vitro and in vivo. Stones can be shattered into pieces less than 3 mm in diameter in about 30 times of spark with lower energy ranging from 1.7-3.4 kV and 1-3 J. Animal experiments were carried out to prove the safety of the lithotriptor. There was neither interference with the cardiovascular and respiratory systems nor obvious damage to the adjacent tissue where plasma shock wave applied to break stones. Six patients with retained calculi impacted both in extra- and intra-hepatic duct were successfully treated by plasma shock wave lithotripsy. It appears very useful in dealing with a huge impacted stone in the biliary tract.

Abstract
Severe acute pancreatitis is highly controversial on its diagnostic criteria, the optimum time for surgery, the selection of surgical procedures, and the prevention and treatment of complications. We treated 40 patients with severe acute pancreatitis from July 1983 to July 1988. The comparison of clinical and laboratory data of severe acute pancreatitis and mild acute pancreatitis showed that in some patients neither Ranson's nor Bank's criteria are reliable in classifying or predicting the severity of the disease. The coexistence of acute peritonitis and bloody ascites with elevated amylase level is very helpful to identify the local conditions of pancreatic necrosis and hemorrhage. We suggest early operation (within 48 hours) be applied in severe acute pancreatitis. In our series, five types of surgical procedures were used. We consider that proper treatment of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is most important in the management of severe pancreatitis.

Abstract
Cytologic findings of endometrial aspiration from 135 women was correlated with pathologic diagnosis of endometrium. The results indicate that different endometrial changes, such as hyperplasia, carcinoma and other malignant endometrial lesions, different phases of normal menstrual cycle and senile atrophy can be distinguished by endometrial cytology. The author suggests that aspiration cytology may serve as a supplement to the biopsy or curettage in the assessment of the status of the endometrium.

Abstract
Biliary infection was the cause of intrahepatic biliary lithiasis in 150 patients operated upon over the last twenty years. Diagnosis was established during operation in the majority of cases, but cholangiography, or ultrasound and/or scintiscan examinations were required in a few patients. To determine the mechanism of formation of these biliary stones, a study was conducted in 30 rabbits divided into three groups, each forming a model of lithogenesis. Pathological examination of the liver demonstrated the presence of multiple abscesses, fibrosis, bile duct stenosis, and perihepatitis. The results of the different types of operative techniques employed in these patients are described.
