Abstract
The progression of bipolar disorder (BD) is characterized by recurrent episodes of depression, mania, and hypomania, thus affecting the daily functionality of individuals. Previous studies have shown that a large proportion of patients diagnosed with BD who are in clinical remission experience significant functional disorders. The present study aimed to investigate the relationships between cognitive impairment and serum progesterone, allopregnanolone and BDNF levels in male bipolar disorder patients who are in the euthymic period. Our study included 41 euthymic male patients with bipolar disorder and 40 age, sex, body mass index (BMI) and smoking-matched male healthy control subjects. Neuropsychiatric tests such as the Stroop Test TBAG Form, Auditory Verbal Digit Span Test- Form B (VADS-B) and Cancellation Test were administered to all participants, and 5-7 ml of peripheral venous blood sample was taken from all participants. Serum allopregnanolone, progesterone and BDNF levels were also measured in all participants. Serum allopregnanolone and progesterone levels were found to be lower in bipolar patients, and it was observed that the serum level of allopregnanolone decreased as the disease duration increased. The serum BDNF levels were similar between groups. The cognitive functions assessed using the Stroop, VADS-B and cancellation tests were found to be better in healthy subjects. The neurocognitive test performances of all participants were strongly positively correlated with allopregnanolone levels. The present study supports the hypothesis that allopregnanolone acts as an endogenous mood stabilizer.

Abstract
We analyzed DTI data involving 22 healthy subjects (HC), 15 patients with deficit syndrome schizophrenia (DSZ), and 25 patients with non-deficit syndrome schizophrenia (NDSZ). We used a 1.5-T MRI scanner to collect diffusion-weighted images and T1 images, which were employed to correct distortions and deformations within the diffusion-weighted images. For 156 regions of interest (ROI), we calculated the average fractional anisotropy (FA), mean diffusion (MD), and radial diffusion (RD). Each ROI underwent a group-wise comparison using permutation F-test, followed by post hoc pairwise comparisons with Bonferroni correction. In general, we observed lower FA in both schizophrenia groups compared to HC (i.e., HC>(DSZ=NDSZ)), while MD and RD showed the opposite pattern. Notably, specific ROIs with reduced FA in schizophrenia patients included bilateral nucleus accumbens, left fusiform area, brain stem, anterior corpus callosum, left rostral and caudal anterior cingulate, right posterior cingulate, left thalamus, left hippocampus, left inferior temporal cortex, right superior temporal cortex, left pars triangularis and right lingual gyrus. Significantly, the right cuneus exhibited lower FA in the DSZ group compared to other groups ((HC=NDSZ)>DSZ), without affecting MD and RD. These results indicate that compromised neural integrity in the cuneus may contribute to the pathophysiological distinctions between DSZ and NDSZ.

Abstract
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) affects numerous systems of the body during the illness, and there have been long-lasting effects. BDNF plays an important role in synaptic plasticity and synaptic communication. According to the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 54 patients who had COVID-19 infection participated in this study. Thirty-six age-, sex-, body mass index (BMI)-, education level- and smoking status-matched healthy controls were included in the present study. All participants were individually administered the Stroop test and Visual Aural Digit Span Test Form B (VADS-B). Serum BDNF levels were measured by ELISA. Stroop test word reading spontaneous correction number and reading time, word color saying wrong number, spontaneous correction number and reading time, box color speaking spontaneous correction number and reading time, Stroop interference and speed factor duration were significantly higher in the COVID-19 group than in the control group. All scores of the VADS-B test were found to be significantly lower in the COVID-19 group. The mean serum BDNF levels were found to be 10.9 ± 6.9 ng/ml in the COVID-19 group and 12.8 ± 6.4 ng/ml in the healthy control group. Two-way ANOVA showed that the serum mean BDNF level was significantly lower in the COVID-19 group than in the control group. Gender had a significant effect on BDNF levels (F = 12.21; p = 0.008). The present study is the first to demonstrate the association between the role of serum BDNF and cognitive decline in patients with COVID-19 infection. Additionally, there is a significant role of male gender in terms of lower BDNF level and cognitive decline.

Abstract
Tardive dyskinesia (TD) is a persistent involuntary complex movement disorder that is known to occur with long-term antipsychotic treatment. Despite being a well-recognized complication of this treatment, its symptoms are often masked by the antipsychotic agents, only to become apparent upon reducing or terminating the treatment. In an effort to advance our understanding of TD pathophysiology and to identify potential therapies, the current study aimed to establish an animal model of TD by administering haloperidol to rats and to evaluate the efficacy of fluvoxamine, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI), in ameliorating TD symptoms. The study compared the behavioral and biochemical parameters of rats that were treated with either fluvoxamine, tetrabenazine, haloperidol, or saline (control group). The biochemical parameters of interest included the brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), nerve growth factor (NGF), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and malondialdehyde (MDA). To achieve the study objectives, 32 male Wistar Albino rats were assigned to four different groups. The control group received physiological saline for six weeks. The haloperidol group received 1 mg/kg/ip haloperidol for the first three weeks, followed by two weeks of saline. The haloperidol+fluvoxamine group received 1 mg/kg/ip haloperidol for the first three weeks, followed by 30 mg/kg/ip fluvoxamine. The haloperidol+tetrabenazine group was administered 1 mg/kg/ip haloperidol for the first three weeks, followed by 5 mg/kg/ip tetrabenazine. Behavioral assessments of the rats were performed by measuring vacuous chewing movements. Subsequently, samples were collected from the hippocampus, striatum, and frontal lobe tissues of the rats, and BDNF, NGF, SOD, and MDA levels were measured. The results of the study demonstrated significant differences between the groups with respect to behavioral observations. Furthermore, SOD levels in the hippocampus, as well as BDNF, NGF, and SOD levels in the striatum of the haloperidol+fluvoxamine group were significantly higher than those observed in the haloperidol group. Conversely, MDA levels in the hippocampus were significantly lower in the haloperidol+fluvoxamine group than in the haloperidol group. These findings provide evidence of the beneficial effects of fluvoxamine, acting as a sigma-1 agonist, in treating TD symptoms induced experimentally. The observed benefits were supported by the biochemical investigations performed on brain tissue samples. Therefore, fluvoxamine may be considered as a potential alternative treatment for TD in clinical practice, although further research is needed to corroborate these findings.

Abstract
Purpose The aim of this study is to investigate the benefits of atorvastatin on the propionic acid-induced autism model via increasing sphingosine-1-phosphate and anti-inflammatory actions with imaging and brain tissue investigations. Materials and methods Twenty-five mg/kg/day/rat of propionic acid (PPA) was administered intraperitoneally to 20 male Wistar rats, and 10 male Wistar rats were fed orally. Study groups were designed as follows: Group 1: Control Group (orally fed control, n=10); Group 2 (PPA+saline, n=10); Group 3 (PPA+Atorvastatin, n=10). The brain biochemical and histopathology assessments and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging were conducted across groups in order to compare them. Results The PPA+Atorvastatin group was found to have significantly lower levels of brain malondialdehyde, IL-2 level, IL-17, tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), and lactate compared to the PPA+saline group. The PPA+Atorvastatin group had higher levels of nerve growth factor and nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (NRF-2) and sphingosine-1-phosphate. In histopathology assessments, the PPA+Atorvastatin group was found to have significantly higher neuronal counts of CA1 and CA2 in the hippocampus, and Purkinje cells in the cerebellum. Conclusions Current findings suggest that atorvastatin increases sphingosine-1-phosphate levels and decreases inflammatory actions which characterize the autism rodent model implemented in this study. These preliminary results have to be confirmed by further experimental and clinical studies.

Abstract
Objective Autism spectrum disorder is a neurodevelopmental disease in which impaired social behaviors, impaired sociality, and restricted and repetitive behaviors are seen. Bumetanide is a loop diuretic that inhibits Na+-K+-2Cl- cotransporter 1 and it is currently used in clinical phase studies in patients with autism spectrum disorder. In present research, it is purposed to demonstrate the beneficial effects of torasemide which is another Na+-K+-2Cl- cotransporter 1 inhibitor on an experimental autism model induced with propionic acid by providing imaging and brain tissue investigations. Methods Male Wistar rats were used in the present study (n = 30). Propionic acid of 250 mg/kg/day was administrated intraperitoneally in rats to induce autism for 5 days. Three groups were created for present study as follows: group 1, normal control (n = 10); group 2, propionic acid and saline given group (n = 10); group 3, propionic acid + tora-semide-administrated group (n = 10). Results Torasemide group scored higher on behavioral tests compared to saline group. The brain levels of malondialdehyde, tumor necrosis factor-alpha, interleukin-2, interleukin-17, and Nuclear Factor kappa B (NF-κB), Glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) were remarkably higher in propionic acid + saline group. In histopathology assessments, torasemide group had higher neuronal count of Cornu Ammonis 1, neuronal count of Cornu Ammonis 2 in hippocampus, and Purkinje cells in cerebellum. GFAP immunostaining index (Cornu Ammonis 1) and cerebellum were lower in torasemide group. Magnetic resonance spectroscopy revealed that mean lactate value was higher in propionic acid + saline group compared to torasemide group. Conclusion Our experimental results showed that torasemide might enhance gamma-aminobutyric acid activity. Torasemide can be considered another promising Na+-K+-2Cl- cotransporter 1 inhibitor in the treatment of autism with a longer half-life and less side effects after further studies.

Abstract
BackgroundThe aim of the present study was to assess thiol/disulfide homeostasis (TDH) parameters and ischemia-modified albumin (IMA) levels in children with Wilson Disease (WD) and to compare them to healthy controls. Methods: Based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria, fifteen children with WD and twenty-nine healthy children were enrolled, and serum thiol/disulfide and IMA levels were compared between groups. Results: The mean values of native and total thiols were significantly lower in the WD group than in the control group. The mean value of disulfide was significantly higher in the WD group than in the control group. The mean percentages of disulfide/total thiol and native thiol/total thiol were higher in the WD group than in the control group. The IMA value was also higher in the WD group than in the control group. Conclusion: The present study demonstrating altered thiol/disulfide parameters indicates increased oxidative stress in children with WD.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The medical intervention for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is restricted to ameliorating comorbid situations. Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) is a growth factor that enhances the proliferation, differentiation and survival of hematopoietic progenitor cells. In the present study, we aimed to investigate the effects of G-CSF in a maternal immune activation-induced autism model. METHODS Sixteen female and 6 male Wistar adult rats were included in the study. After 21 days, forty-eight littermates (8 male controls, 8 female controls, 16 male lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-exposed rats and 16 female LPS-exposed rats) were divided into groups. Sixteen male LPS-exposed and 16 female LPS-exposed rats were divided into saline and G-CSF treatment groups. RESULTS In male rats, the LPS-exposed group was found to have significantly higher levels of TNF-α, IL-2, and IL-17 than the LPS-exposed G-CSF group. Levels of nerve growth factor, brain PSD-95 and brain GAD67 were higher in the LPS-exposed G-CSF group than in the LPS-exposed group in male rats. In female rats, brain NGF levels were similar between groups. There was no difference between groups in terms of brain GAD 67 levels. Brain PSD-95 levels were higher in the control group than in both the LPS-exposed and LPS-exposed G-CSF groups in female rats. Both neuronal CA1 and neuronal CA2 levels were lower, and the GFAP immunostaining index (CA1) and GFAP immunostaining index (CA3) were higher in the LPS-exposed group than in the LPS-exposed G-CSF group in male rats. However, neuronal count CA1 and Neuronal count CA3 values were found to be similar between groups in female rats. CONCLUSIONS The present research is the first to demonstrate the beneficial effects of G-CSF on core symptoms of ASD experimentally depending on male sex. G-CSF can be a good candidate for ameliorating the core symptoms of ASD without serious side effects in males.

Abstract
Background The corpus callosum (CC) is the most targeted region in the cerebrum that integrates cognitive data between homologous areas in the right and left hemispheres. Aims Our study used statistical analysis to determine whether there was a correlation between shape changes in the CC in patients with schizophrenia (SZ) (deficit syndrome (DS) and non-deficit syndrome (NDS)) and healthy control (HC) subjects. Methods This study consisted of 27 HC subjects and 50 schizophrenic patients (20 with DS and 30 with NDS). 3 patients with DS and 4 patients with NDS were excluded. Three-dimensional, sagittal, T1-spoiled, gradient-echo imaging was used. Standard anatomical landmarks were selected and marked on each image using specific software. Results As to comparing the Procrustes mean shapes of the CC, statistically significant differences were observed between HC and SZ (DS+NDS) (p=0.017, James’s Fj=73.732), HC and DS (p<0.001, James’s Fj=140.843), HC and NDS (p=0.006, James’s Fj=89.178) and also DS and NDS (p<0.001, James’s Fj=152.967). Shape variability in the form of CC was 0.131, 0.085, 0.082 and 0.086 in the HC, SZ (DS+NDS), DS and NDS groups, respectively. Conclusions This study reveals callosal shape variations in patients with SZ and their DS and NDS subgroups that take into account the CC’s topographic distribution.

Abstract
Objective Breast augmentation surgery is one of the most common cosmetic procedures among women. In the present study, we compared personality traits, self-esteem, and body perception between women who had undergone breast augmentation surgery and a control group of women who had not. We hypothesized that the personality traits of women who had vs those who had not undergone breast augmentation surgery would differ. Materials and Methods According to the inclusion and exclusion criteria, patients who had undergone breast augmentation surgery and age- and education-matched, healthy women were included in the present study. The breast augmentation group and control group were compared in terms of personality traits under the Basic Personality Traits Inventory. Additionally, self-esteem, which was assessed with the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, and body perception, which was evaluated using the Body Cathexis Scale, were measured and compared between the two groups. Results When the patients (n = 80) and the control group (n = 100) were compared, the Body Cathexis Scale, extroversion, and openness scores were statistically significant and were found to be higher in the breast augmentation group (p<0.05). In regression analysis, it was found that age, openness, and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale score had statistically significant effects on extroversion. Conclusion We argue that there may be a presupposition, based on stigma, that women who undergo breast augmentation surgery are more neurotic than those who do not. Consequently, this may influence the outcomes of studies evaluating the personalities of these women. Our results indicate that women who had undergone breast augmentation had more positive personality traits than women in an un-operated control group.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In this study, we assessed thiol/disulfide homeostasis (TDH) parameters and ischemia-modified albumin (IMA) levels in children with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) compared with healthy children. METHODS Fifty-six children with IBS and 53 healthy children were included in the study after assessment of inclusion and exclusion criteria. Plasma thiol/disulfide and IMA levels were compared between children with and without IBS. RESULTS The mean values of native thiol, total thiol, and disulfide were 343.779 ± 138.654 μmol/L, 365.398 ± 140.148 μmol/L, and 23.190 ± 4.978 μmol/L, respectively, in the IBS group and 409.908 ± 69.288 μmol/L, 433.481 ± 76.891 μmol/L, and 20.090 ± 4.252 μmol/L, respectively, in the control group. Native thiol and total thiol values were significantly reduced in the IBS group compared with the control group. The mean IMA values were 0.835 ± 0.083 (g/L) and 0.778 ± 0.072 in the IBS and control groups, respectively. The IMA value was significantly increased in the IBS group. CONCLUSION Impaired thiol/disulfide homeostasis and increased IMA levels can be considered etiological factors in children with IBS.

Abstract
Objective Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a severely disabling psychiatric disease characterized by impairments in communication and social skills. Although efforts have been made to explore the etiology of ASD, its pathophysiology remains unclear. This issue is rendered more challenging by confounding data about the effects of vaccination on disease etiology. In this study, therefore, we investigated the neurodevelopmental effects of maternal tetanus toxoid administration on rat offspring. We hypothesized that the vaccine affects the sociability and preference for social novelty of rat offspring as well as the production of immunological and neurotrophic factors, including tumor necrosis factor-alfa (TNF-α), neuregulin-1 (NRG-1), neuron growth factor (NGF), and oxytocin. Methods The study involved 12 female and 4 male adult Sprague-Dawley rats (238 ± 10 g), which were assigned to two groups. Group 1 (control group) was given 0.5 ml of normal saline (0.9% NaCl) on the 10th day of pregnancy, whereas Group 2 (experimental group) was administered 0.5 ml of tetanus vaccine (tetanus toxoid, 40 IU). Results Maternal tetanus toxoid administration exerted beneficial effects on the sociability and explorative behaviors of the rats. The brain tissue levels of TNF-α, NGF, NRG-1, and oxytocin were higher in the experimental group than those among the controls. All these significant differences were found in both the male and female rats. Conclusion This study is the first to demonstrate the advantages of tetanus toxoid administration in relation to the sociability and explorative behaviors of rat offspring. The results showed that the vaccine also influences NRG-1, neuregulin, and oxytocin production.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Vaginismus is one of the most frequently occurring genito-pelvic pain disorders in women. Sexual dysfunction commonly presents with comorbid psychiatric disorders, and many patients suffering from the former exhibit the latter. The objective of this study was to investigate the affective temperaments of women with vaginismus compared to healthy controls. METHODS Forty-eight women with vaginismus and 42 age-matched healthy women were recruited and compared in terms of their scores on the Temperament Evaluation of Memphis, Pisa, Paris, and San Diego Autoquestionnaire and a sociodemographic instrument. RESULTS Except for the scores for hyperthymic temperament, those for depressive, cyclothymic, irritable, and anxious temperaments were significantly higher in the vaginismus group than in the healthy controls (P<.05). The analysis of covariance indicated that the anxious temperament was significantly associated with covariants. CONCLUSIONS On the basis of the preliminary results, women with vaginismus may be candidates for bipolar disorder. This population should therefore be screened more carefully in terms of the development of the disorder. Bipolar disorder should also be considered when treatments for comorbid psychiatric disorders are needed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is one of the most common functional gastrointestinal disorders among the pediatric population. Recently, neurotrophins have been suggested to be etiological factors or causes of symptoms of IBS. In the present study, the aim was to research the serum brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and proBDNF levels in children with IBS. METHODS The study group was selected from pediatric gastroenterology outpatient clinic and control group was recruited from healthy children outpatient clinic. Based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 29 children with IBS and 55 healthy children were included in the study. The data were obtained from all participants, and if needed, from their parents. All participants were assessed in terms of anthropometric measurements. The serum (BDNF) and proBDNF levels were compared between the groups. RESULTS The proBDNF levels in IBS patients were higher compared with the control group in covariance analysis (IBS patients group mean 492.4, SD 534.1; control group mean 332.8, SD 406.7) (p = 0.02; Cohen's d = 0.45). The serum BDNF levels of IBS patients were also higher compared with the control group (IBS patients group mean 3.1, SD 4.3; control group mean 1.7, SD 2.7) (p = 0.02; Cohen's d = 0.51). CONCLUSIONS The present study is the first to demonstrate that there is a higher level of serum BDNF in children with IBS. Moreover, it is the first to demonstrate an increased level of proBDNF in IBS. Additional research is needed to confirm the preliminary results.

Abstract
Hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) is an extreme form of vomiting during pregnancy and is characterized with excessive vomiting and nausea and ketonuria, electrolyte imbalance, dehydration and severe nurtition deficiency. The etiology of HG is considered as multifactorial. Altough there is a great interest to HG in terms of psychiatric conditions, there have been limited numbers of studies that researched personality traits in patients with HG. In present study, we aimed to compare temperament and character traits between pregnant women with and without HG by Temperament and Character Inventory. 48 pregnant women with HG and 64 healthy pregnant women were included to study. The HG groups and control group were compared in terms of temperament and character traits and anxiety levels. The temperament scores of novelty seeking, harm avoidance and reward dependence were found to be similar between groups while the score of persistence was significantly lower in HG group compared with control group (p = .021). All character scores in HG group as cooperativeness, self-directedness, and self-transcendence were significantly lower compared with control groups (respectively; p = .002, p = .018 and p = .029). The scores of STAI-1 was higher in HG group compared with control group (p = .027) whereas the score of STAI-2 was found to be similar between groups. Present study is the first to demonstrate different temperament and character traits in patients with HG. We argue that our results support the psychiatric background of HG; however further studies are needed to confirm our results.

Abstract
Background: Social media addiction is currently a common problem worldwide. Studies have suggested that individuals who underwent rhinoplasty are susceptible to the aforementioned condition, but no evidence-based research has been conducted to derive a definitive conclusion to this issue. Objective: This study was aimed at comparing the self-esteem, body perception, and social media use of individuals with and without a history of rhinoplasty. Design, Setting, and Participants: The study was conducted at two treatment centers. Rhinoplasty patients were selected from those who sought treatment in the private clinic of one of the researchers, whereas the control cohort participants were chosen from among employees of a university hospital. After the implementation of inclusion and exclusion criteria, 100 patients and 102 healthy unmatched control subjects were enrolled in the research. Main Measures and Outcomes: The collected sociodemographic data covered age, gender, years of education, and type of social media use. Social media addiction was measured using the social media addiction scale, self-esteem was ascertained with the Rosenberg self-esteem scale, and body perception was assessed using the body perception scale. The independent samples t-test was conducted twice to compare the mean scores of the participants, and mediation analysis was carried out to determine the effects of body image and self-esteem scores on social media addiction scores. Two-sided p-values were calculated, and differences were considered significant at the 0.1, 0.05, and 0.001 levels. Results: The groups obtained similar body image and self-esteem scores, but the difference in the social media addiction scores of the rhinoplasty patients and control participants was statistically significant at the 0.05 level, with the former having higher addiction scores. On the basis of the cutoff for social media addiction, 8 and 10 participants from the rhinoplasty and control groups, respectively, exhibited signs of dependency on Web-based social networks and similar innovations. The self-esteem scores (X) and body image scores (M) predicted the social media addiction scores (Y). The coefficient of the body image scores was statistically significant, but that of the self-esteem scores was not. The X + M → Y model indicated statistically significant effects. Conclusion and Relevance: We compared the social media usage of rhinoplasty patients and control participants. Our findings indicated no evidentiary support for the view of rhinoplasty patients as social media addicts and suggested that such a perception is a form of stigmatization.

Abstract
Rabbit Syndrome is an uncommon side effect of antipsychotic treatment. Although it is usually associated with typical antipsychotics, it can also be related to atypical antipsychotics. Anticholinergics are the most accepted treatment approach in treating Rabbit Syndrome. Fluvoxamine is a member of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and it is a potent agonist of sigma 1 receptors. In this article, we report a Rabbit Syndrome case who has benefited from fluvoxamine, in terms of both depressive disorder and Rabbit Syndrome; and present the data on the effects of sigma 1 agonist fluvoxamine on numerous movement disorders.

Abstract
Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common psychiatric disorders in childhood and causes significant functional impairments in children. Behavioral genetic and molecular genetic studies have provided significant evidence in terms of highlighting the etiology of ADHD. Folate deficiency during pregnancy is an established risk factor for ADHD. Polymorphisms in the Methyltetrahydrofolate Reductase (MTHFR) encoding gene, such as A1298C and C667T, are associated with the decreased bioavailability of folate, and this condition can act like folate deficiency. In the literature, no study has investigated MTHFR polymorphisms in mothers of children with ADHD. Sixty-four children diagnosed with ADHD and their mothers as well as 40 healthy children and their mothers participated in this study. MTHFR polymorphisms were investigated in all participants. Comparison of the C677C and A1298C MTHFR polymorphisms in children with and without ADHD revealed no significant differences. We found that the maternal C677C_CT genotype counts, both observed and expected values, were significantly different from those based on Hardy-Weinberg Principle Analysis in the ADHD group. The most important result of this study was that maternal C677C MTHFR gene polymorphisms are significant risk factors in for ADHD, and we argue that children with ADHD are exposed to folate deficiency, even if their mothers received a sufficient amount of folate during pregnancy. This result also highlights one of the genetic factors of ADHD. Further studies should be performed to confirm this finding.

Abstract
Accumulating evidence suggests that sigma-1 receptors play a role in the pathophysiology of neuropsychiatric diseases, as well as in the mechanisms of some selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Among the SSRIs, the order of affinity for sigma-1 receptors is as follows: fluvoxamine > sertraline > fluoxetine > escitalopram > citalopram >> paroxetine. Some SSRIs (e.g., fluvoxamine, fluoxetine and escitalopram) and other drugs (donepezil , ifenprodil , dehydroepiandeterone (DHEA)) potentiate nerve-growth factor (NGF)-induced neurite outgrowth in PC12 cells, and these effects could be antagonized by the selective sigma-1 receptor antagonist NE-100. Furthermore, fluvoxamine, donepezil, and DHEA, but not paroxetine or sertraline, improved phencyclidine-induced cognitive deficits in mice, and these effects could be antagonized by NE-100. Several clinical studies showed that sigma-1 receptor agonists such as fluvoxamine and ifenprodil could have beneficial effects in patients with neuropsychiatric disorders. In this chapter, the authors will discuss the role of sigma-1 receptors in the mechanistic action of some SSRIs, donepezil, neurosteroids, and ifenprodil, and the clinical implications for sigma-1 receptor agonists .

Abstract
BACKGROUND Schizophrenia is a chronic and debilitating disorder, the etiology of which remains unclear. Apoptosis is a programmed cell death mechanism that might be implicated in neuropsychiatric disorders, including schizophrenia. In this study, we aimed to compare the serum levels of apoptosis among deficit schizophrenia (DS) syndrome patients, nondeficit schizophrenia (NDS) patients, and healthy controls (HCs). PATIENTS AND METHODS After the inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied, 23 DS patients, 46 NDS patients, and 33 HCs were included in the study. The serum apoptosis levels were measured using a quantitative sandwich enzyme immunoassay with human monoclonal antibodies directed against DNA and histones. RESULTS There was a significant difference among the three groups in terms of the levels of apoptosis (F 2,96=16.58; P<0.001). The serum apoptosis levels in the DS and NDS groups were significantly higher than those in the HC group. Furthermore, the serum apoptosis levels in the DS group were significantly higher than the levels in the NDS group. CONCLUSION This study suggests that increased levels of apoptosis may be implicated in the pathophysiology of DS syndrome. However, further studies are needed to support the role of apoptosis in DS.

Abstract
Alopecia areata (AA) and vitiligo (V) are diseases that are correlated with psychiatric disorders before, during and after diagnosis. The Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI) is a well-established approach for investigating personality traits in various psychosomatic diseases. The aim of this study is to compare and investigate the differences in the TCI between patients with first onset AA, patients with V and healthy controls (HC). Participants in the study included 42 patients with first onset AA, 50 adult patients with V and 60 HC who had no history or diagnoses of psychiatric or dermatological disorders. All participants were assessed with the TCI and the Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI). Among the temperament traits, the extravagance, disorderliness and total novelty-seeking scores were lower, and the worry and pessimism scores were higher in patients with V compared with patients with AA and the HC. The mean score of the enlightened second nature and the total self-directedness score of the character traits were higher in patients with V compared with patients with AA and the HC group. In the AA group, there was a negative correlation only between the reward dependence total score and the DLQI score. This study suggests that patients with first onset V have a distinct temperament, such as being unenthusiastic and unemotional, and character profiles, such as worry and pessimism, independent of their psychiatric comorbidities, and patients with AA do not have a different personality from the non-affected population.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Abuse is considered to have a place in the etiology of various psychiatric disorders. Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) is one of the psychiatric disorders for which abuse could be an etiologic factor; however, few studies have investigated the relationship between abuse and PMDD. In this study, our aim was to investigate childhood abuse in patients with PMDD and compare them with healthy female subjects. METHOD This cross-sectional study included 70 women with PMDD (DSM-IV-TR criteria) who were admitted to the outpatient psychiatry clinic of Ankara Yenimahalle State Hospital, Ankara, Turkey, between December 2012 and December 2013. Additionally, 78 healthy controls were included in the study. Sociodemographic, familial, and reproductive period characteristics of the women were recorded. All subjects were administered the Premenstrual Syndrome Scale (PMSS) and the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ). RESULTS Among the sociodemographic characteristics, being a university graduate (76.9%) and being a public servant (70.5%) were significantly higher in the healthy control group (P = .01 and P = .01, respectively). A family history of PMDD (31.4%), a history of postpartum psychiatric disorders (11.4%), and a history of attempted suicide (7.1%) were higher in the PMDD group compared with the healthy control group (P = .001, P = .003, and P = .024, respectively). Significant differences were also found between PMDD and healthy controls in PMSS score (P ≤ .001), CTQ total scores (P = .002), and subscale scores including emotional abuse and emotional neglect (P = .004), physical abuse (P = .009), and sexual abuse (P = .012). CONCLUSIONS To our knowledge, the present study is the first to investigate associations between PMDD and childhood abuse from Turkey. More comprehensive studies on this topic with larger sample sizes are required to enrich the literature and enable practitioners to be more effective in clinical practice.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is a well-established neurotrophin that plays a role in the pathophysiology of numerous psychiatric disorders. Many studies have investigated the serum BDNF levels in patients with schizophrenia. However, there are restricted data in the literature that compare the serum BDNF levels in patients with deficit and nondeficit syndromes. In this study, we aimed to compare the serum BDNF levels between schizophrenic patients with deficit or nondeficit syndrome and healthy controls. METHODS After fulfilling the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 58 patients with schizophrenia and 36 healthy controls were included in the study. The patients were grouped as deficit syndrome (N=23) and nondeficit syndrome (N=35) according to the Schedule for the Deficit Syndrome. Three groups were compared in terms of the sociodemographic and clinical variants and serum BDNF levels. RESULTS The groups were similar in terms of age, sex, body mass index, and smoking status. The serum BDNF levels in patients with deficit syndrome were significantly lower than those in healthy controls. In contrast, the serum BDNF levels in patients with nondeficit syndrome were similar to those in healthy controls. CONCLUSION This study suggests that decreased BDNF levels may play a role in the pathophysiology of schizophrenic patients with deficit syndrome. Nonetheless, additional studies using a larger patient sample size are needed to investigate the serum BDNF levels in schizophrenic patients with deficit syndrome.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Schizophrenia is a chronic, disabling, disorder that affects approximately 1% of the population. The nature of schizophrenia is heterogeneous, and unsuccessful efforts to subtype this disorder have been made. Deficit syndrome schizophrenia (DS) is a clinical diagnosis that has not been placed in main diagnostic manuals. In this study, we aimed to investigate and compare neurological soft signs (NSS) in DS patients, non-deficit schizophrenia (NDS) patients, and healthy controls (HCs). We suggest that NSS might be an endophenotype candidate for DS patients. METHODS Sixty-six patients with schizophrenia and 30 HCs were enrolled in accordance with our inclusion and exclusion criteria. The patients were sub-typed as DS (n=24) and NDS (n=42) according to the Schedule for the Deficit Syndrome. The three groups were compared in terms of sociodemographic and clinical variables and total scores and subscores on the Physical and Neurological Examination for Soft Signs (PANESS). Following the comparison, a regression analysis was performed for predictability of total PANESS score and its subscales in the diagnosis of DS and NDS. RESULTS The groups were similar in terms of age, sex, and smoking status. The results of our study indicated that the total PANESS score was significantly higher in the DS group compared to the NDS and HC groups, and all PANESS subscales were significantly higher in the DS group than in the HC group. The diagnosis of DS was predicted significantly by total PANESS score (P<0.001, odds ratio =9.48, 95% confidence interval: 0.00-4.56); the synergy, graphesthesia, stereognosis, motor tasks, and ability to maintain posture subscales were found to be significant predictors. CONCLUSION This study confirms that NSS were higher in patients with DS. In addition, we suggest that our results might support the notion of DS as a different and distinct type of schizophrenia. NSS might also be a promising candidate as an endophenotype for DS. However, large sampled, multicentric studies are needed to clarify the place of NSS as an endophenotype in DS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Prolactin is a hormone receiving considerable attention in psychiatry. Increased serum prolactin level is frequently associated with dopamine blocking antipsychotics. Furthermore, decreased prolactin level was considered a reflector of the effect of antipsychotics. However, there is restricted numbers of investigations that researched baseline prolactin levels in first-episode patients with schizophrenia. AIMS We purpose to investigate serum baseline prolactin levels in drug-naive first-episode patients with schizophrenia (FES) and to explore the differences in serum prolactin levels between FES, drug-free schizophrenic patients (DFS) and healthy controls (HC). MATERIAL AND METHODS The study was conducted in the Departments of Psychiatry, Gölbaşı Hasvak and Kırklareli State Hospitals, Turkey. Thirty male FES, 41 male DFS and 32 male HC were included in study. All participants were clinically examined and individually interviewed. Before initiating any pharmacological treatment, 5 ml of venous blood was collected to measure serum prolactin levels between 08:00 and 10:00 h, which was determined by radioimmunoassay (RIA). Prolactin levels were also collected from the consenting HC using the same assay. RESULTS The mean age was higher in the DFS group. The mean score of Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale was higher in the FES group and mean score of Scale for the Assessment of Negative Symptoms was higher in the DFS group. The mean value of prolactin was higher in the FES group (34.1 ± 19.9 ng/dl) compared with DFS (17.9 ± 6.5 ng/dl) and HC (9.7 ± 2.3 ng/dl) (F = 35.5, P < 0.001). Additionally, the mean value of serum prolactin is higher in the DFS group compared with HC (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION To our knowledge, this study is the first to demonstrate higher serum prolactin levels in male FES compared with male DFS and male HC. Prolactin might act as a protective factor while first episode of schizophrenia is experienced. Future studies are needed to provide the role of prolactin in schizophrenia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a distressing sleep disorder that occurs worldwide. Although there have been recent developments in understanding the pathophysiology of RLS, the exact mechanism of the disease has not been well elucidated. An increased prevalence of neurologic and psychiatric diseases involving dopaminergic dysfunction in vitamin D-deficient patients led us to hypothesize that vitamin D deficiency might result in dopaminergic dysfunction and consequently, the development of RLS (in which dopaminergic dysfunction plays a pivotal role). Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between vitamin D deficiency and RLS. METHODS One hundred and fifty-five consecutive patients, 18-65 years of age, who were admitted to the Department of Internal Medicine with musculoskeletal symptoms and who subsequently underwent neurological and electromyography (EMG) examination by the same senior neurologist, were included in this study. The patients were divided into two groups according to serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) (a vitamin D metabolite used as a measure of vitamin D status) level: 36 patients with serum 25(OH)D levels ≥20 ng/mL comprised the normal vitamin D group, and 119 patients with serum 25(OH)D levels <20 ng/mL comprised the vitamin D deficiency group. The two groups were compared for the presence of RLS and associated factors. RESULTS The two groups were similar in terms of mean age, sex, mean body mass index (BMI), and serum levels of calcium, phosphate, alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and ferritin. The presence of RLS was significantly higher in the vitamin D deficiency group (χ (2)=12.87, P<0.001). Regression analysis showed vitamin D deficiency and serum 25(OH)D level to be significantly associated with the presence of RLS (odds ratio [OR] 5.085, P<0.001 and OR 1.047, P=0.006, respectively). CONCLUSION The present study demonstrated a possible association between vitamin D deficiency and RLS. Given the dopaminergic effects of vitamin D, 25(OH)D depletion may lead to dopaminergic dysfunction and may have a place in the etiology of RLS. Prospective vitamin D treatment studies are needed to confirm this relationship and to evaluate the efficacy of vitamin D as a treatment for RLS patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is an established relationship between depression/anxiety disorders and cardiovascular morbidity and mortality which has been previously documented. However, there has been no study evaluating coronary slow flow in association with depression and anxiety. METHODS AND RESULTS A total of consecutive 90 patients were included in the study. All patients completed scoring scales for depression [Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HAMD)] and anxiety (STAI-1, State anxiety subscale of State-Trait Anxiety Inventory; STAI-2, Trait anxiety subscale of State-Trait Anxiety Inventory). Thereafter, they underwent selective coronary angiography and 2 groups were formed: coronary slow flow (n = 42), and normal coronary flow (n = 48). The two groups had comparable baseline characteristics. However, significant differences were found between coronary slow flow and normal coronary flow groups regarding depression (13.1 ± 8.2 and 6.9 ± 6.7, p < 0.001 for HAMD, respectively) and anxiety (46.2 ± 15.0 vs. 32.6 ± 9.9, p < 0.001 for STAI-1 and 51.0 ± 16.7 vs. 43.0 ± 10.7, p = 0.009 for STAI-2, respectively) scores. There were also significant positive correlations between depression/anxiety scores and TIMI frame counts of all major epicardial coronary arteries. In addition, after adjustment for smoking, hypertension, scoring scales, and the presence of depressive mood, all scoring scales and depressive mood were found to be independent risk factors for coronary slow flow in multivariable logistic regression analysis. CONCLUSIONS Significant association was found among coronary slow flow, depression/anxiety scores and depressive mood. KEY WORDS Anxiety; Coronary slow flow; Depression; Scale.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Many studies have investigated the relationship between blood levels of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and its sulfate ester (DHEA-S), cortisol, progesterone, and testosterone and the onset, prognosis, symptom severity, and treatment response of schizophrenia. In the present study, we assessed potential differences in blood levels of neurosteroids between drug-naïve first-episode patients with schizophrenia (FES), and drug-free patients with schizophrenia who were not in the first episode but were in a phase of acute exacerbation (DFP). MATERIALS AND METHODS The present study included 32 male FES, 28 male DFP, and 24 male healthy controls (HC). Groups were compared in terms of blood levels of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), cortisol, testosterone, progesterone, and DHEA-S. RESULTS Blood levels of ACTH, cortisol, testosterone, and progesterone were similar among the groups. The mean value of serum DHEA-S was significantly different among the groups (P<0.001). The value of serum DHEA-S was higher in the FES group than in the DFP and HC groups (both P<0.001). The mean values of serum DHEA-S in the HC and DFP groups were found to be similar (P=0.33). CONCLUSION We suggest that higher values of DHEA-S in the FES group compared with both the DFP and HC groups indicate that this neurosteroid response is unique to first-episode schizophrenia patients. Further studies are needed to investigate the difference in blood levels of neurosteroids in different groups in terms of age of diagnosis.

Abstract
PURPOSE Vitiligo is an acquired pigmentary skin disease that can cause serious cosmetic problems. There have been numerous and well established studies that have demonstrated the comorbidity of various psychiatric disorders in patients with vitiligo. However, to our knowledge, there have been no studies investigating whether a psychiatric biomarker, such as brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), is associated with vitiligo. PATIENTS AND METHODS This study was conducted in Namık Kemal University Medical Faculty, Departments of Dermatology and Psychiatry between January 2013 and September 2014. After meeting inclusion and exclusion criteria, serum BDNF levels were assayed in 57 patients with first onset vitiligo and no known current or past psychiatric disorder and compared with BDNF levels in 58 age and sex matched healthy subjects. RESULTS The age and female/male ratios were similar between groups. The mean values of serum BDNF were 1.57±0.97 ng/dL and 2.37±1.73 ng/dL in the vitiligo group and in the healthy control group, respectively. The mean BDNF level was significantly higher in the healthy control group compared with the vitiligo group (t=2.76, P=0.007). CONCLUSION This is the first study to compare serum BDNF levels between patients with vitiligo and healthy subjects. The reduced level of serum BDNF in patients with vitiligo may be directly related to the etiology of vitiligo or associated with the high percentage of psychiatric disorders in that patient population. Further studies are needed to support our preliminary results.

Abstract
Fluvoxamine is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor that is approved for psychiatric disorders such as major depressive episodes and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Beside inhibition of serotonin reuptake, fluvoxamine is also a potent agonist of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) protein sigma-1 receptors, which play a role in the pathophysiology of a number of psychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders. This report presents beneficial effects of sigma-1 agonist fluvoxamine on hyperkinetic movement disorders such as tardive dyskinesia and tardive akathisia. Fluvoxamine might be a novel treatmet approach in the treatment of hyperkinetic movement disorders.

Abstract
The goal of this study was to examine the neuroprotective effect of ebselen against intracerebroventricular streptozotocin (ICV-STZ)-induced oxidative stress and neuronal apoptosis in rat brain. A total of 30 adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into 3 groups of 10 animals each: control, ICV-STZ, and ICV-STZ treated with ebselen. The ICV-STZ group rats were injected bilaterally with ICV-STZ (3 mg/kg) on days 1 and 3, and ebselen (10 mg/kg/day) was administered for 14 days starting from 1st day of ICV-STZ injection to day 14. Rats were killed at the end of the study and brain tissues were removed for biochemical and histopathological investigation. Our results demonstrated, for the first time, the neuroprotective effect of ebselen on Alzheimer's disease (AD) model in rats. Our present study, in ICV-STZ group, showed significant increase in tissue malondialdehyde levels and significant decrease in enzymatic antioxidants superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase in the frontal cortex tissue. The histopathological studies in the brain of rats also supported that ebselen markedly reduced the ICV-STZ-induced histopathological changes and well preserved the normal histological architecture of the frontal cortex tissue. The number of apoptotic neurons was increased in frontal cortex tissue after ICV-STZ administration. Treatment of ebselen markedly reduced the number of degenerating apoptotic neurons. The study demonstrates the effectiveness of ebselen, as a powerful antioxidant, in preventing the oxidative damage and morphological changes caused by ICV-STZ in rats. Thus, ebselen may have a therapeutic value for the treatment of AD.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Deficit schizophrenia (DS) is defined for identifying a relatively homogeneous subgroup of patients with diagnosis of schizophrenia, characterized by the presence of primary and enduring negative symptoms. There have been several studies which investigated the status of oxidative stress and total antioxidant level in patients with schizophrenia. However, there is not any study which researched differences between DS and nondeficit schizophrenia (NDS) in terms of status of oxidative stress and antioxidant level. We hypothesized that patients with DS would have different status of oxidative stress and antioxidant levels compared with patients with NDS. METHODS Twenty-three patients with DS, 42 patients with NDS and 31 age, sex and smoking status matched healthy controls (HC) were included to study. Five milliliters of blood was drawn from control subjects and patients for assessing total antioxidant potential (TAOP) and total peroxide levels (TPEROX). The ratio of TPEROX to TAOP is referred as oxidative stress index (OSI). RESULTS We noticed that serum TAOP level was significantly lower in DS group compared with NDS and HC groups. The OSI was also found to be higher in DS group compared with NDS and HC groups. Furthermore, serum TAOP level and status of OSI were similar between NDS and HC groups. CONCLUSION Our study is the first to demonstrate differences between DS and NDS in terms of status of oxidative stress and serum total antioxidant level. We suggest that our study represents novel and important results in terms of supporting provides and hypothesis which considered DS as a different disease entity with respect to NDS. Further studies are needed for investigating the status of antioxidants and oxidative stress and their clinical implications in deficit schizophrenia.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE SSRIs are some of the most widely prescribed medications in the world. In addition to their effectiveness, SSRIs were reported to be associated with the side effects of weight gain, sexual dysfunction, drug interactions, extrapyramidal symptoms and discontinuation symptoms. However, the effects of SSRIs on metabolic parameters are poorly understood. METHODS This study aims to describe the effects of SSRIs on the metabolic parameters of drug-naive first episode patients with generalized anxiety disorder. Ninety-seven female patients aged 20-41 years without any metabolic or psychiatric comorbidity were included in the study. Fluoxetine, sertraline, paroxetine, citalopram and escitalopram were randomly given to the patients. Metabolic parameters, including BMI, waist circumference and the levels of fasting glucose, total cholesterol, triglyceride, HDL, LDL and blood pressure, were measured before and after 16 weeks of treatment. RESULTS In the paroxetine group, there was a significant increase in the parameters of weight, BMI, waist circumference, fasting glucose, total cholesterol, LDL and triglyceride after 16 weeks of treatment. There were significant increases in the levels of triglyceride in the citalopram and escitalopram groups. In the sertraline group, the total cholesterol level increased after treatment. In the fluoxetine group, there were significant reductions in the parameters of weight, total cholesterol and triglyceride. CONCLUSION To our knowledge, this study is the first to prospectively describe metabolic syndrome abnormalities in patients with first episode generalized anxiety disorder. Although the effectiveness of the different SSRIs is similar, clinicians should be more careful when prescribing SSRIs to patients who have cardiac risk factors. Larger and lengthier controlled clinical trials are needed to explore the associations between SSRI use and metabolic syndrome.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Second generation antipsychotics (SGAs) are currently the most prescribed drugs in the treatment of schizophrenia. Despite their advantages, which include greater improvement in negative symptoms, cognitive function, prevention of deterioration, quality of life, and fewer extrapyramidal symptoms, the concern regarding metabolic abnormalities which might cause cardiovascular diseases during treatment with SGAs have been rising. Paraoxonase 1 (PON1) is an enzyme mostly located on high-density lipoprotein particles, and has been shown to protect or inhibit lipoprotein oxidation. Growing evidence suggests that PON1 plays a key role in the pathophysiology of atherosclerosis. METHODS In the present study, we measured serum PON1 activity and serum levels of total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) in patients with schizophrenia, who had been treated with either olanzapine or quetiapine, and in healthy controls. Thirty five patients who had been treated with olanzapine, 29 patients who had been treated with quetiapine, and 32 age, sex, and smoking status-matched healthy control (HC) participants were enrolled. Serum PON1 activity and serum levels of TC, triglyceride, HDL-C, and LDL-C were measured. RESULTS Serum PON1 activity in the olanzapine group was significantly lower than that of HC and quetiapine groups. Furthermore, serum levels of TC and LDL-C in the olanzapine group were significantly higher than those of quetiapine and HC groups. Interestingly, there was a positive correlation between PON1 activity and HDL-C levels in the olanzapine group. CONCLUSION These findings suggest that serum PON1 activity in patients treated with olanzapine was lower than that of HC and quetiapine groups, and that PON1 may play a role in the metabolic side effects associated with olanzapine treatment. A further study to examine the relationship between serum PON1 activity and cardiovascular and metabolic side effects during treatment with SGAs will be of great interest.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Tardive dyskinesia (TD) is characterized by involuntary, repetitive, purposeless movements that can affect different parts of the body. Tardive dyskinesia is a well-known side effect of conventional antipsychotics and commonly occurs after several years of treatment. The effective treatment of TD is unclear. Recently, the sigma-1 receptor agonist fluvoxamine was reported to be beneficial for hyperkinetic movement disorders. METHOD We report 5 cases with postpsychotic depressive disorder of schizophrenia and TD. All patients were given fluvoxamine 100 mg/d, and after the second week the dosage of fluvoxamine was increased to 200 mg/d. At the fourth week, patients were assessed in terms of TD and postpsychotic depressive disorder of schizophrenia. RESULTS Fluvoxamine was found to be beneficial for TD and postpsychotic depressive disorder of schizophrenia in all patients by the fourth week. CONCLUSIONS Recently, the sigma-1 receptor agonist fluvoxamine has been considered beneficial for various neuropsychiatric disorders. However, data about the effects of fluvoxamine on hyperkinetic movement disorders are limited. In this report, we attempted to demonstrate the beneficial effects of fluvoxamine on TD, and we suggest that the mechanism of action might be due to sigma-1 agonism. Further detailed, double-blind studies should clarify the potential use of fluvoxamine in the treatment of hyperkinetic movement disorders.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Schizophrenia is associated with a significant risk of suicide, and suicide still remains one of the main causes of death in schizophrenic patients. Beside classic risk factors for suicidality, temperament and character traits have been researched and considered as risk factors for suicidal behavior in recent years. METHOD Subjects were 94 patients with schizophrenia who were under treatment. All patients were in a stable phase of the illness. Patients with lifetime suicide attempt (n = 46) and without suicidal attempt (n = 48) were compared with each other in terms of temperament and character traits by using the Temperament and Character Inventory. RESULTS Harm avoidance and persistence scores were higher in suicidal schizophrenic patients compared with nonsuicidal schizophrenic patients. The scores of self-directedness and cooperativeness were lower in suicidal schizophrenic patients compared with nonsuicidal schizophrenic patients. These 4 variables remained significant predictors of lifetime suicidal attempts in a logistic regression model. CONCLUSION To the best of our knowledge, the present study is the first that specifically compares schizophrenic patients with and without suicidal behavior by the Cloninger temperament and character model. Our data indicate that schizophrenic patients will show a greater risk for suicide according to certain personality configurations. However, to establish causal relationships between personality and suicidality in schizophrenia, longitudinal studies are warranted within a multifactorial interactive framework of biologic and clinical variables.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to examine personality traits of patients with major depressive disorder and explore the possible connections between personality and clinical and sociodemographic variables. METHODS The sociodemographic and clinical properties of 80 patients with major depression, who were euthymic according to Hamilton Depression Scale scores, were recorded. Their personality was evaluated by using Temperament and Character Inventory and results were compared with 80 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. We used general linear model analysis to evaluate the manner in which the variables contributed to TCI scores. RESULTS Remitted depressive patients scored significantly lower on on self-directedness and higher on harm avoidance than HC. Previous suicide attempts had a main effect only on harm avoidance while previous psychotic mood episodes were significantly associated with novelty seeking, self-directedness and cooperativeness. With respect to numeric clinical variables, only duration of illness was significantly and negatively correlated with NS and RD scores. CONCLUSION Patients with euthymic major depressive disorder may have significantly different personality traits than the normal population, and patients with different clinical and sociodemographic characteristics may show different personality patterns. In addition, assessment of major depressed patients by means of the Temperament and Character Inventory may be helpful to get a deeper insight into those personality traits underlying suicidality and the emergence of psychotic mood episode.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine trait impulsivity in patients with bipolar disorder and explore the possible connections between impulsivity and clinical presentation of the illness. Diagnoses were based on the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV. The sociodemographic and clinical properties of 71 patients with bipolar disorder, who were euthymic according to Young Mania Rating Scale and Hamilton Depression Scale scores, were recorded. Their trait impulsivity was evaluated by using the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS) and impulsivity subscale of the Temperament and Character Inventory, and the results were compared with 50 age- and sex-matched healthy controls and among patients with different clinical properties. All BIS-11 subscale scores were higher in bipolar than in comparison subjects. There were no effects of education and age. Elevated BIS-11 scores were associated with predominant depressive polarity, longer duration of illness and a history of psychotic mood episodes and suicide attempts. These relationships persisted when age, gender, and education were taken into account. These results show that after accounting for common confounding factors, trait-like impulsivity was substantially higher in subjects with bipolar disorder than in nonbipolar comparison subjects and may vary according to different clinical presentations.

Abstract
AIM The surgical treatment of benign thyroid disease is still controversial. Many treatment modalities have been described for the surgical management of various thyroid diseases, including excision, bilateral subtotal thyroidectomy (BST), near-total thyroidectomy, and total thyroidectomy (TT). METHODS Hospital records were reviewed for 2863 patients who underwent thyroid surgery for presumed multinodular goiter (MNG) between 1990 and 2009. However, due to the inefficiency of the hospital archive system, we were able to access detailed personal and surgical information for only 803 patients. RESULTS Of the 803 patients, 227 (28.3%) underwent DP, 228 (28.4%) BST and 348 (43.3%) TT operations. While there were no complications in 683 (85.1%) of the 803 operations, complications developed with 120 (14.9%). A definite difference between TT and the other (BST and DP) types of operation in relation to complications. The duration of hospital stay was 2.2±0.4 days for the BST group, 2.2 ± 0.4 days for the DP group and 2.3 ± 0.7 days for the TT group. There was a significant difference among all three groups. Recurrence rates of the operations performed were 35 (15.3%), 20 (8.8%) and 4 (1.15%), respectively, for BST, DP and TT. There was significant difference between the recurrence rates of TT and BST, and between TT and DP. CONCLUSION When the frequency of complications in recurrent operations and the malignity possibility of the thyroid tissue left behind are taken into consideration, we believe that TT will be more beneficial in the surgical treatment of benign thyroid disorders.
