Abstract
Moxifloxacin (MOX) is an important antibiotic commonly used in the treatment of recurrent Escherichia coli (E. coli) infections. The aim of this study was to investigate its antibacterial efficiency when used with solid lipid nanoparticles (SNLs) and nanostructured lipid carriers (NLCs) as delivery vehicles. For this purpose we designed two SLNs (SLN1 and SLN2) and two NLCs (NLC1 and NLC2) of different characteristics (particle size, size distribution, zeta potential, and encapsulation efficiency) and loaded them with MOX to determine its release, antibacterial activity against E. coli, and their cytotoxicity to the RAW 264.7 monocyte/macrophage-like cell line in vitro. With bacterial uptake of 57.29 %, SLN1 turned out to be significantly more effective than MOX given as standard solution, whereas SLN2, NLC1, and NLC2 formulations with respective bacterial uptakes of 50.74 %, 39.26 %, and 32.79 %, showed similar activity to standard MOX. Cytotoxicity testing did not reveal significant toxicity of nanoparticles, whether MOX-free or MOX-loaded, against RAW 264.7 cells. Our findings may show the way for a development of effective lipid carriers that reduce side effects and increase antibacterial treatment efficacy in view of the growing antibiotic resistance.

Abstract
Nowadays, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) due to their inorganic conducting, semiconducting, and organic π-π stacking properties are becoming innovative materials. CNTs have an adjustable size, large surface area, and other significant chemical properties. Due to their excellent electrical, optical, and mechanical properties, CNTs play an important role in various application fields. In the past decade, many unique intrinsic physical and chemical properties have been intensively explored for pharmaceutical, biological, and biomedical applications. The functionalization of CNTs results in a remarkably reduced cytotoxicity and at the same time increased biocompatibility. The toxicity studies reveal that highly water-soluble and serum stable nanotubes are biocompatible, nontoxic, and potentially useful for biomedical applications. Ultrasensitive drug determination from its dosage form and/or biological samples with carbon nanotubes can be realized after surface modification. The main purpose of this review is to present recent achievements on CNTs which are investigated in electrochemical and chromatographically sensing technologies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Compared to polymeric nanoparticles prepared using non-lipid surfactants, lecithin addition forms larger nanoparticles and exhibits higher drug loading and the stability of nanoparticles can be conferred by adding Vitamin E Polyethylene Glycol Succinate (TPGS) into the formulation. AIM The aim of this study is to prepare Gemcitabine (Gem) loaded lecithin/PLGA nanoparticles. Moreover, the effect of TPGS and sodium cholate (SK) on the preparation of lecithin/PLGA nanoparticles was compared. METHODS It was found that while PC addition into PLGATPGS nanoparticles formed larger particles (251.3± 6.0 nm for Gem-PLGATPGS NPs and 516,9 ± 3.9 nm for Gem-PLGA-PCTPGS NPs), the particle size of PLGASK nanoparticles was not affected by lecithin addition (p>0.05;). RESULTS In cytotoxicity studies, it was found that the SK-MES-1 cell inhibition rates of Gem-PLGATPGS NPs, Gem-PLGA-PCTPGS NPs, Gem-PLGASK NPs, Gem-PLGA-PCSK NPs were similar with free Gem (p>0.05;). In cytotoxicity studies, it was found that the encapsulation into nanoparticles did not change the cytotoxicity of the drug. However, higher cellular uptake has been observed when the lecithin was used in the preparation of PLGA nanoparticles. CONCLUSION Compared with free Gem, the Gem-loaded nanoparticles enhanced the uptake of the drug by SK-MES-1 cells which can increase the effect of gemcitabine for non-small cell lung cancer therapy.

Abstract
The content and the application of pharmaceutical dosage forms must meet several basic
requirements to ensure and maintain efficiency, safety and quality. A large number of active substances
have a limited ability to direct administration. Excipients are generally used to overcome the limitation
of direct administration of these active substances. However, the function, behavior and composition of
the excipients need to be well known in the design, development and production of pharmaceutical
dosage forms. In this review, excipients used to assist in any pharmaceutical dosage form production
processes of drugs, to preserve, promote or increase stability, bioavailability and patient compliance, to
assist in product identification/separation, or to enhance overall safety and effectiveness of the drug
delivery system during storage or use are explained. Moreover, the use of these excipients in drug delivery
systems is identified. Excipient toxicity, which is an issue discussed in the light of current studies,
also discussed in this review.

Abstract
Migraine is a chronic, painful, neurological disorder that affects approximately 15% of the population worldwide. It is a form of neurovascular headache: a disorder in which neural events result in the dilation of blood vessels that, in turn, results in pain and further nerve activation. The pathogenesis of migraine is not completely understood, but it is thought that both central and peripheral stimulations can play a role in migraine. Experimental pharmacological evidence suggests that some drugs can have actions in migraine treatment and oral drug delivery is the first choice for these drugs. However, the oral absorption of many drugs is delayed during migraine attacks. Therefore, there may be an advantage to other drug delivery routes, such as parenteral and intranasal. Moreover, nanoparticles can be used for improved drug delivery of anti-migraine agents as they can protect the encapsulated drug from biological and/or chemical degradation, and extracellular transport by P-gp efflux proteins. Various analytical studies have been performed to sensitive and selective assays of antimigraine drugs from commercial and real samples. Anti-migraines, either single or combined with other drugs, can be easily detected by several analytical methods, such as ultraviolet spectrometry, visible spectrometry, high-performance liquid chromatography, liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, and high-performance thin layer chromatography. This review focuses on the status of antimigraine drug delivery technologies and possible routes for drug delivery. Moreover, it will present their analytical assays with different methods.

Abstract
Aims In this study, using Beck depression inventory (BDI), we aimed to determine alterations in the emotional state of patients who had impacted third molars (M3) extracted owing to postoperative pain, edema, and trismus.In this prospective clinical trial, which was conducted at Tokat Gaziosmanpasa University, Faculty of Dentistry, Department of Maxillofacial Surgery Clinic, we studied 60 patients (30 males and 30 females), who were 18-47 years old (the mean of 25.6 years of age). The patients with M3 with moderate preoperative pain intensities, edema, and maximal mouth opening (MMO) data were recorded, and BDI was applied to determine their emotional states. The patients were re-evaluated using BDI to detect alterations in their emotional state owing to pain intensity, edema, and trismus on postoperative second and seventh day. Subjects and Methods Descriptive statistical analysis, Chi-square, and independent t-test were utilized to interpret the obtained data. Results According to our findings, a statistically significant relationship was observed between BDI scores and gender on the second postoperative day (P = 0.004), and between MMO and BDI scores on the second and seventh postoperative day (P = 0.012, P = 0.045). Pain intensity scores on the postoperative sixth hour and seventh day were significantly correlated with BDI scores on the postoperative second and seventh day (P = 0.000/ P = 0.000/P = 0.002/P = 0.004/P = 0.010/P = 0.017/P = 0.001/P = 0.000). Conclusions Our results suggest that the pain and trismus owing to the M3 surgery were significantly correlated with an increase in the postoperative BDI scores.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E and K) are isoprene derived apolar molecules. While deficiencies of these vitamins have been associated with various diseases such as type 2 diabetes and cancer, high doses of Vitamin A and D can cause toxic effects. Accurate detection of serum levels of these vitamins have critical importance. In this study, it is aimed to develop and validate a sensitive and specific Liquid Chromatography Tandem Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS / MS) method that allows simultaneous analysis of fat-soluble vitamins. MATERIALS AND METHODS Serum samples were deproteinized with methanol and chromatographic separation of analytes were performed by LC-MS/MS system (Agilent Technologies 6420 Triple Quadrapole LC-MS), Agilent Pursuit PFP column (100 mm × 3.0 mm; 3.0 μm), in gradient mode using Mobile phase A (milli-Q+0.1 % formic acid) and Mobile phase B (Methanol+0.1 % formic acid). Ion scan was performed in MRM (multiple reaction monitoring) mode with positive ion selectivity in ESI ion source. RESULTS The retention times were 6.93 min, 6.94 min and 9.34 min while concentrations were linear in the ranges between 10-150 ng/mL, 3-90 μg /dL and 6-90 μg/mL for 25-hydroxy vitamin D3 (25-OHD3), Vitamin A and Vitamin E, respectively. Inter-day Coefficient Variation (CV%) values for Vitamin A, Vitamin E and 25-OHD3 were; 9.08 %, 9.85 % and 3.07 % and intra-day CV% values were; 2.98 %, 5.05 % and 5.01 %. LOD and LOQ results were 2.11 μg/dL and 3.50 μg/dL for Vitamin A; 1.71 μg/mL and 2.45 μg/mL for Vitamin E; 1.47 ng/mL and 2.50 ng/mL for 25-OHD3, respectively. CONCLUSION In this study, a LC-MS/MS method that can analyze fat soluble vitamins in 13 min was developed and validated. This method will be useful for clinical purposes by replacing low specificity immunoassay methods and High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) methods that can not allow simultaneous analysis.

Abstract
Multidrug resistance (MDR) is the most common problem of inadequate therapeutic response in tumor cells. Many trials has been developed to overcome drug efflux by P-glycoprotein (P-gp). For instance, co-administration of a number of drugs called chemosensitizers or MDR modulators with a chemotherapeutic agent to inhibit drug efflux. But for optimal synergy, the drug and inhibitor combination may need to be temporally colocalized in the tumor cells. In this study, we encapsulated the Ver and Dox in PLGA nanoparticles to inhibit the P-gp drug efflux in breast cancer. Moreover, the effect of either Dox solution (DoxS), Dox nanoparticles (DoxNP), DoxS + VerS, DoxNP + VerS, DoxNP + VerNP or Dox-VerNP was evaluated. It was found that co administration of DoxNP with VerNP (70.76%) showed similar cellular uptake of Dox to Dox/Ver combination solution (70.62%). However it is observed that DoxNP + VerNP has the highest apoptotic activity (early apoptotic 13.52 ± 0.06%, late apoptotic 53.94 ± 0.15%) on human breast adenocarcinoma (MCF 7) cells. Hence, it is suggested that DoxNP + VerNP is a promising administration for tumor therapy.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to clinically evaluate the efficacies of three treatment methods and to compare their outcomes in patients with painful disc displacement. The study group comprised 45 patients with unilateral temporomandibular disorders who fell into Axis I group II (with limited mouth opening) of the Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders. Magnetic resonance imaging was used for definitive diagnosis. The patients were divided randomly into three groups according to the treatment method: splint therapy, splint therapy with ultrasound-guided arthrocentesis, and splint therapy with low-level laser therapy. Patients were followed up after treatment for 6 months. The groups were compared in terms of pain and functional jaw movements (unassisted mouth opening without pain, maximum unassisted mouth opening, and contralateral movements). At the end of treatment, functional jaw movements were significantly increased while pain values were significantly decreased in all groups (P<0.05). Group 2 had a quicker improvement in terms of mouth opening scores at the end of the first month, and unassisted mouth opening without pain was found to be more than 35 millimetres in all groups at the end of 6 months. All treatment modalities showed effective results on pain and functional jaw movements in the treatment of temporomandibular disorders.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the clinical performance and the marginal adaptation of inlay/ onlay restorations made of lithium of a new lithium disilicate strengthened, lithium alumino-silicate glass-ceramic (LAS) material compared with a conventional lithium-disilicate glass-ceramic (LDS) and new-generation polymer-based CAD/CAM resin composite (CS) materials over one year. MATERIALS AND METHODS Seventy-five inlay-onlay restorations were placed in 35 patients. The restorations were assigned and randomized to three groups as LDS, LAS, and CS. Clinical evaluations were performed after one week, six months, and one year after the cementation, according to the modified United States Public Health Services (USPHS) criteria. The marginal quality analyses of 21 samples (n=7) were assessed under a scanning electron microscope. The data were analyzed by using Friedman, Wilcoxon Signed Ranks, Chi-square and Paired t-tests (p⟨0.05). RESULTS No statistically significant difference (p⟩0.05) was found between groups in the modified USPHS, gingival index, and plaque index evaluations, and the total success rate was 100% for three groups after one year. Following SEM evaluations in all groups, continuous margin percentages were decreased, but these results were not statistically significant (p⟩0.05). CONCLUSIONS Lithium disilicate-strengthened lithium aluminosilicate glass-ceramics can be considered a reliable material for an option for posterior onlay/inlay restorations.

Abstract
After oral administration, drug absorption from solid dosage forms depends on the
release of the drug active compounds from the dosage form, the dissolution or solubilization
of the drug under physiological conditions, and the permeability across the gastrointestinal
tract. Dissolution testing is an essential part of designing more effective solid dosage forms
in pharmaceutical industry. Moreover, dissolution testing contributes to the selection of appropriate
formulation excipients for improving the dosage form efficiency. This study aims
to analyze in-vitro drug dissolution testing in solid dosage forms since 2010 in order to present
a comprehensive outlook of recent trends. In doing that the previous studies in the literature
are summarized in the form of a table to demonstrate the apparatuses used for dissolution
testing, the media in which the solid dosage form is dissolved, the method preferred for
analysis from dissolution media, the conditions of analyses and the results obtained.

Abstract
Superficial fungal infections caused by Candida species are common skin diseases. Therefore, this study aimed to develop a new formulation containing oxiconazole nitrate, which is an azole group derivative for antifungal treatment, as a thermosensitive gel since there has been no literature study until now. MIC value of the novel thermosensitive formulation against three Candida species was calculated and time-dependent antifungal activity analysis was performed. Viscosity, transition temperature Tsol-gel (°C) and gelation time of the thermosensitive gel formulation were also determined in the viscometer. The measurements performed on the tensilometer device were analyzed for adhesion hardness and elongation percentages of the formulation. In the FT-IR spectrometer, the spectrum of solution and gel state was compared between 650 and 4000 cm-1 and it was found that there is no difference between them. It was found that the temperature is reversible on the formulation and did not cause any disruption of its components. Characterization parameters of the thermosensitive gel formulation containing oxiconazole nitrate and time-dependent activity against Candida species was observed to be the same as those of the solution containing only oxiconazole nitrate. MIC, MFC and time-dependent antifungal analysis did not show any particular difference between formulation and oxiconazole nitrate itself. Thermosensitive gel formulation containing oxiconazole nitrate was found to be effective on superficial fungal infections. We believe it is also appropriate for in vivo usage, but it is necessary to perform animal and human research. It is also needed to evaluate the formulation against other etiologic agents of superficial fungal infections.

Abstract
A two factor three level factorial design was used to investigate the effects of carbopol and cationic hydrophilic polymers which have a common use in buccal drug formulations. Statistical models with interaction terms were derived to evaluate influence of carbopol (X1) and chitosan (X2) on tablet disintegration (Y1) and dissolution (Y2), mechanical properties (Y3), swelling (Y4). Tablet disintegration studies were carried out using two different pH environments within buccal region pH limits and also two different commonly used dissolution methods for buccal tablets were also investigated to compare the effect of polymer type on dissolution. Polymer type and ratio affect the characteristics of the buccal tablets due to their different physicochemical behavior at buccal pH. Also significant variances between dissolution profiles for buccal tablets, using either USP Paddle or flow through cell methods were found. These results indicate that both polymer type and ratio as well as combination of them effects the drug behavior in different ways.

Abstract
Eletriptan Hydrobromide is a serotonin 5-HT1 receptor agonist and it used for the treatment of migraine headaches with or without aura. Even if the drug is well absorbed after oral administration, it has some drawbacks like first pass metabolism and decrease in bioavailability after migraine attacks. Encapsulation of drug into polymeric nanoparticles is one of the methods for protecting the drug against degradation. The present work described a preparation of Eletriptan Hydrobromide loaded poly (d,l-lactide-co-glycolide) nanoparticles prepared using o/w single emulsion solvent evaporation method. In order to determine the factors affecting the physicochemical properties of the nanoparticles on the particle size of poly (d,l-lactide-co-glycolide) nanoparticles, D-Optimal design is used. Moreover, novel, simple, sensitive, selective, and fully validated chromatographic technique for the quantification of Eletriptan Hydrobromide from Eletriptan Hydrobromide loaded poly(d,l-lactide-co-glycolide) nanoparticles was developed. Poly(d,l-lactide-co-glycolide) concentration, sonication time and sonication energy were found as significant factors (p<0.05) on particle size of nanoparticles. Limit of detection and limit of quantification values were calculated as 0.28μgmL-1and 0.86μgmL-1, respectively.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DWMRI) for differentation between Graves' disease and Hashimoto's thyroiditis. PATIENTS AND METHODS Fifty patients (27 Graves diseases and 23 Hashimoto thyroiditis) and twenty healthy volunteers were examined using T1, T2 and DWMRI. The patients were diagnosed on the basis of physical findings and the results of thyroid function tests and serological tests. Circular ROIs were positioned on the bilateral thyroid lobes and isthmus. All measurements were repeated three different b values including 100, 600 and 1000 s/mm2 in all cases. ADC (Apparent diffusion coefficient) maps were calculated automatically with the MR system. RESULTS Mean ADC values were 2.93 × 10-3, 1.97 × 10-3 and 1.62 × 10-3 mm2/s in the healthy volunteers; 3.47 × 10-3, 2.25 × 10-3 and 1.64 × 10-3 mm2/s in Graves' disease; 2.53 × 10-3, 1.76 × 10-3, 1.28 × 10-3 mm2/s in Hashimoto thyroiditis for b100, b600 and b1000, respectively. The ADC values of the Graves diseases were higher than healty volunteers and Hashimoto thyroiditis. ADC values were statistically significant for differentation between Hashimoto thyroiditis and Graves' disease all b values (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS DWMRI is fast sequence and does not require contrast agent. Quantitative assessment of the lesion is possible using ADC map. So, DWMRI may be useful differentiation of the Hashimoto thyroiditis and Graves' disease.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the protective effects of taurine (Tau) on experimental acute pancreatitis (AP) in a rat model by measuring cytokines and oxidant stress markers. Forty rats were randomly divided into four groups: sham, AP, Tau and AP + Tau. AP was induced with sodium taurocholate. No treatment was given to the AP. All rats were killed 5 days later. Pancreatic tissues of rats and blood samples were obtained. Tau treatment significantly decreased serum amylase activity ( p < 0.001), total injury score ( p < 0.001), malondialdehyde levels ( p < 0.001) and myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity ( p < 0.001). There was no significant difference between the Tau and AP + Tau groups in serum and pancreatic tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin (IL)-1β and IL-6 levels ( p = 1.000). Histopathologic scores in the AP + Tau and Tau groups were significantly lower compared with the AP group (both p < 0.001). These results showed that Tau reduces lipid peroxidation, amylase and MPO activities and the concentrations of proinflammatory cytokines secondary to AP and also increases superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase activities in rats with sodium taurocholate-induced AP. It also has a marked ameliorative effect at histopathologic lesions. With these effects, Tau protects the cells from oxidative damage, reduces inflammation and promotes regression of pancreatic damage.

Abstract
We studied the effects of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) and zoledronic acid (ZA) on posterior lumbar fusion using a validated animal model. A total of 40 New Zealand white rabbits underwent posterior lumbar fusion at L5-6 with autogenous iliac bone grafting. They were divided randomly into four groups as follows: group 1, control; group 2, HBO (2.4 atm for two hours daily); group 3, local ZA (20 μg of ZA mixed with bone graft); and group 4, combined HBO and local ZA. All the animals were killed six weeks after surgery and the fusion segments were subjected to radiological analysis, manual palpation, biomechanical testing and histological examination. Five rabbits died within two weeks of operation. Thus, 35 rabbits (eight in group 1 and nine in groups 2, 3 and 4) completed the study. The rates of fusion in groups 3 and 4 (p = 0.015) were higher than in group 1 (p < 0.001) in terms of radiological analysis and in group 4 was higher than in group 1 with regard to manual palpation (p = 0.015). We found a statistically significant difference in the biomechanical analysis between groups 1 and 4 (p = 0.024). Histological examination also showed a statistically significant difference between groups 1 and 4 (p = 0.036). Our results suggest that local ZA combined with HBO may improve the success rate in posterior lumbar spinal fusion.

Abstract
Expression of tryptophan-degrading enzyme indoleamine (2,3)-dioxygenase in tumour tissue is proposed to represent an important tumour immunoescape mechanism. To further investigate the potential role of activated indoleamine (2,3)-dioxygenase in bronchus carcinoma, we examined serum tryptophan and kynurenine concentrations in nine patients with small cell lung cancer and in 27 patients with non-small cell lung cancer. Tryptophan metabolic changes were compared with markers of inflammation and immune activation namely C-reactive protein (CRP), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and neopterin. Compared with controls, patients presented with lower tryptophan concentrations (P < 0.01) and with higher serum kynurenine to tryptophan ratios (P < 0.01), an index of tryptophan degradation. Also ESR and CRP and neopterin concentrations were increased in the patients (all P < 0.001), and there was a weak correlation between kynurenine to tryptophan ratio and ESR, CRP and neopterin concentrations. We conclude that in the majority of patients with non-small cell lung cancer and small cell lung cancer, enhanced tryptophan degradation can be observed. It seems to relate to an inflammatory response and may reflect activation of indoleamine (2,3)-dioxygenase at the tumour site. The capacity of the tumour to escape normal host immune defence may be influenced by tryptophan degradation. Results of this pilot study deserve further confirmation.

Abstract
In this study, the effects of periosteal autograft and human amniotic membrane on tendon healing were compared. Forty-two New Zealand rabbits were divided into three groups. Flexor digitorum fibularis tendons were cut and repaired with a modified Kessler technique and circumferential sutures in all groups. Tendon repair alone was carried out in group 1, tendon repair and application of human amniotic membrane was done in group 2 and tendon repair and application of periosteal autograft was done in group 3. Biomechanical and histopathological examinations were done 2 and 6 weeks postoperatively. Biomechanical examination showed that group 3 was the strongest at weeks 2 and 6. Adhesion, inflammation and new bone formation showed no difference between groups at week 2. However, adhesion formation was found to be less in groups 2 and 3 than group 1 at week 6. The application of periosteal autograft might be useful in repair of tendon injuries.

Abstract
Obesity, characterized by hyperleptinemia and hypoghrelinemia, has become a major health problem all over the world and is associated with an increased risk of complications including insulin resistance, hypertension, dyslipidemia, diabetes mellitus and atherosclerosis. The use of the pancreatic lipase inhibitor Orlistat can help seriously overweight people to achieve and maintain weight loss. The aim of our study was to compare the serum leptin and ghrelin levels in obese subjects who take orlistat with those receiving only dietary treatment. Twenty-one obese patients and 10 control subjects participated. The obese patients were divided into two groups; one group (n=11) took orlistat (120 mg, 3 times daily) and received dietary treatment and the other (n=10) only received the dietary treatment. The study lasted twelve weeks. The concentrations of serum ghrelin, leptin, insulin and C-peptide, and routine biochemical parameters, were measured in both groups. The serum ghrelin level was higher in control (183+/-62 fmol/ml) than obese (59+/-30 fmol/ml) subjects while the plasma leptin level was lower in control (8.7+/-12 microg/L) than obese (36.7+/-19 microg/L) subjects (all p<0.001). BMI and the total blood cholesterol, LDL and triglyceride levels fell significantly after both orlistat and dietary treatment in the obese subjects (all p<0.01), and the plasma ghrelin level rose (p<0.01). The leptin level demonstrated the opposite trend in both groups but only the patients taking orlistat showed a significant change (p<0.05).Taken together, these results show that orlistat has no effect on body weight in obese subjects additional to that conferred by a non-pharmacological life-style intervention. We therefore conclude that weight lost rather than type of treatment might be more valuable in obesity.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Hip fractures in the elderly are associated with significant mortality. This study aimed to investigate the risk factors for mortality in elderly patients with hip fractures during a one-year period. METHODS This was a prospective study which included consecutive isolated nonpathologic hip fractures in 74 (52 female, 22 male) patients in a level-1 trauma centre. These patients were 65 years or older and were ambulatory before the fracture. The patients were treated with hemiarthroplasty. The factors investigated were age, gender, nutritional status determined by blood albumin and total lymphocyte count, haemoglobin levels on the day of admission, mobilisation time after surgery, length of hospital stay, comorbidities, American Society of Anaesthesiologists (ASA) rating of operative risk, and the time period between injury and surgery. The patients were followed up for one year after surgery, or until death. RESULTS In total, 15 patients died during the one-year period. Patient survival was 94.6 percent at 3 months, 81.1 percent at 6 months and 79.7 percent at 12 months. There were two in-hospital deaths. The factors significantly associated with mortality were patients with more than two comorbidities, an ASA score of III-IV, a blood albumin level of less than 3.5 g/dl and a total lymphocyte count of less than 1500 cells/ml on admission. However, after the multivariate analysis, an ASA score of III-IV, low total lymphocyte count, female gender and low haemoglobin levels on admission remained the independent and significant risk factors associated with a one-year mortality. CONCLUSION This study confirms that a high ASA score, female gender, a lower lymphocyte count and low haemoglobin levels on admission are significant factors in assessing the one-year mortality in elderly patients with hip fractures. Predicting these risk factors improves the case management.

Abstract
Nasal drug delivery is an interesting route of administration for metoclopramide hydrochloride (MTC) in preventing different kind of emesis. Currently, the routes of administration of antiemetics are oral or intravenous, although patient compliance is often impaired by the difficulties associated with acute emesis or invasiveness of parenteral administration. In this perspective, nasal dosage forms (solution, gel, and lyophilized powder) of MTC were prepared by using a mucoadhesive polymer sodium carboxymethylcellulose (NaCMC). In vitro and ex vivo drug release studies were performed in a modified horizontal diffusion chamber with cellulose membrane and excised cattle nasal mucosa as diffusion barriers. The tolerance of nasal mucosa to the formulation and its components were investigated using light microscopy. In vivo studies were carried out for the optimized formulations in sheep and the pharmacokinetics parameters were compared with oral solution and IV dosage form. The release of MTC from solution and powder formulations was found to be higher than gel formulation (p < 0.05). Histopathological examination did not detect any severe damage. Hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin (HPbetaCD) used in powder formulations was found to be effective for enhancing the release and absorption of MTC. In contrast to in vitro and ex vivo experiments nasal bioavailability of gel is higher than those of solution and powder (p < 0.05). In conclusion, the NaCMC gel formulation of MTC with mucoadhesive properties with increased permeation rate is promising for prolonging nasal residence time and thereby nasal absorption.

Abstract
The increased production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) from activated neutrophils in Behçet's disease (BD) and recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) may result in increased oxidative stress. Uric acid can react rapidly with neutrophil-derived ROS to form allantoin. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the serum levels of allantoin as a new marker of oxidative stress in BD compared with malondialdehyde (MDA) levels as a well-known marker. Blood samples were obtained from 23 BD patients, 22 RAS patients as positive controls, and 21 healthy controls. When compared to the healthy controls, we found higher allantoin and MDA levels in the BD patients and higher MDA levels in the RAS patients. Serum ascorbic acid levels in the BD patients were significantly lower than in the controls. Increased allantoin and MDA levels suggest the possible involvement of free radicals in BD. As allantoin is only a product of uric acid oxidation by reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, it may also be used as a marker of oxidative stress in BD.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the effects of porcelain treatment techniques on the color change of feldspathic porcelain before and after exposure to distilled water, coffee, red wine, and cola and examine the surface texture of the porcelain with field-emission SEM. MATERIALS AND METHODS Test specimens were prepared in the form of discs 15 mm in diameter by 2-mm thick and divided into four groups: Naturalglaze, dual-ion exchange, overglaze and polishing. The specimens were prepared according to their group and stored in red wine, coffee, and cola. After removal, the specimens were dipped in distilled water. Color measurements were made with a spectrophotometer, and color differences were determined using the CIE-LAB system. Statistical analysis was made with SPSS 13.5. RESULTS Immersion time and types of surface treatment were significant factors for color stability (P < .01).

Abstract
Hormone ghrelin and orotic acid accelerate wound healing as well as controlling inflammation and immunity. We have, therefore, investigated the serum and milk levels of ghrelin and orotic acid in dairy cows with (n = 21) or without (n = 21) subclinical mastitis. Acylated and des-acylated ghrelin as well as orotic acid concentration were detected by using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The results revealed that ghrelin level in milk and serum was significantly higher in dairy cows with subclinical mastitis than that of dairy cows without subclinical mastitis. This was also the case when the orotic acid concentrations in dairy cows with subclinical mastitis were compared with those dairy cows without subclinical mastitis. In conclusion, ghrelin and orotic acid occur in particularly high concentrations in subclinical mastitis, and might, therefore, be required in greater amounts for tissue repair and may be also used as a indicator for subclinical mastitis.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to examine the effects of raloxifene (RLX) and tibolone (TBN) on plasma homocysteine (Hcy) levels and their relationship with atherosclerotic changes in the walls of the carotid artery in ovariectomised rats. Thirty surgically ovariectomised Wistar albino rats after a menopausal period of 6 cycles were randomly assigned to receive RLX 0.01 mg/kg/day (n=10), TBN 0.04 mg/kg/day (n=10) and the same dose of placebo (n=10) for 6 cycles. Serum levels of vitamin B12, folate and Hcy were measured and carotid arteries were examined histopathologically following the termination of treatment. Hcy levels were 3.27+/-0.97, 2.57+/-0.32 and 2.28+/-0.12 micromol/l, Vitamin B12 levels were 901.90+/-239.76, 694.70+/-112.20 and 631+/-309.44 pg/ml and folate levels were 73.80+/-12.71, 72.51+/-7.05 and 84.79+/-20.82 ng/ml in receiving RLX, TBN and placebo respectively. Hcy levels were increased by RLX vs. placebo (P=0.006) but not by TBN vs. placebo (P=0.070). Vitamin B12 levels were found to be elevated by TBN vs. the control group (P=0.041) but not by RLX vs. placebo (P=0.059). Histopathological examination of carotid arteries from rats receiving both RLX and TBN revealed no difference vs. placebo. Data obtained from the study support the view that neither RLX nor TBN appears to have a primary protective effect on vascular disease by effecting the metabolism of Hcy at menopause.

Abstract
Etodolac, a highly lipophilic anti-inflammatory drug, is widely used in rheumatoid arthritis usually at an oral dose of 200 mg twice daily. The commonest side effects during therapy with etodolac is generally gastrointestinal disturbances these are usually mild and reversible but in some patients are peptic ulcer and severe gastrointestinal bleeding. To eliminate these side effects and obtain high drug concentration at the application side, dermal application of etodolac seems to be an ideal route for administration. Hydrophilic gel formulations of etodolac were prepared with carboxymethylcellulose sodium. The effect of different terpenes (anethole, carvacrol, and menthol) as an enhancer on the percutaneous absorption of etodolac was also investigated. Permeation studies were carried out with unjacketed modified horizontal diffusion cells through cellulose membrane and rat skin. In vitro studies with cellulose membrane showed that all formulations presented the same drug release profile (p > 0.05). Ex vivo studies with excised rat skin revealed that etodolac was released and penetrated into rat skin quickly. Anethole, a hydrophobic terpene, enhanced the absorption of etodolac significantly (p < 0.05). This result is consistent with the fact that hydrophobic terpenes are effective on the percutaneous absorption of lipophilic drugs. Menthol and carvacrol, hydrophilic terpenes, did not enhance the absorption of etodolac. The lipophilicity of the enhancers seems an important factor in promoting penetration of etodolac through the skin. Since etodolac creates gastrointestinal disturbances, topical formulations of etodolac in gel form including 1% anethole could be an alternative.

Abstract
The release of ketoprofen incorporated into modified release ketoprofen microsponge 200 mg tablets and Profenid Retard 200 mg was studied in vitro and in vivo. The formulation containing ketoprofen microsponges yielded good modified release tablets. An in vivo study was designed to evaluate the pharmacokinetic parameters and to compare them with the commercially available ketoprofen retard tablets containing the same amount of the active drug. Commercial ketoprofen retard tablets showed a more rapid absorption rate than modified release tablets and peak levels were reached within almost 3.6 h after administration. However, the new modified release tablets showed a slower absorption rate and peak levels were reached 8 h after administration.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Behçet's disease is a rare, chronic disorder. The cause of Behçet's disease is unknown. It is believed to be caused by an autoimmune reaction. As in other chronic autoimmune diseases, Behçet's disease may show a subclinical adrenal failure and some changes in cortisol levels. We aimed to evaluate adrenal gland function in Behçet's disease patients. MATERIAL AND METHOD This study included 18 Behçet's disease patients and 15 healthy controls. Patient and control groups were administered i.v. 1 microg low dose test (LDT) and 250 microg standard dose test (SDT) adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) stimulation test after 12 h of night fasting with an interval of 3-days and cortisol responses in the 0th, 30th and 60th minutes were evaluated. RESULTS There was no statistically significant difference between basal cortisol values of Behçet's disease and control groups. Cortisol values in the 60th minute in LDT were significantly lower in Behçet's disease group than in the control group. In the peak cortisol responses to LDT, a significant decrease was found in Behçet's disease group. CONCLUSION These findings suggest that hypothalamo-pituitary adrenal axis is partially suppressed in Behçet's disease.
