Abstract
BACKGROUND Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS) is a rare genetic disorder characterized by the development of pigmented spots, gastrointestinal polyps and increased susceptibility to cancers. Currently, most studies have investigated intestinal microbiota through fecal microbiota, and there are few reports about mucosa-associated microbiota. It remains valuable to search for the key intestinal microbiota or abnormal metabolic pathways linked to PJS. AIM This study aimed to assess the structure and composition of mucosa-associated microbiota in patients with PJS and to explore the potential influence of intestinal microbiota disorders and metabolite changes on PJS. METHODS The bacterial composition was analyzed in 13 PJS patients and 12 controls using 16S rRNA gene sequencing (Illumina MiSeq) for bacteria. Differential analyses of the intestinal microbiota were performed from the phylum to species level. Liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC‒MS) was used to detect the differentially abundant metabolites of PJS patients and controls to identify different metabolites and metabolic biomarkers of small intestinal mucosa samples. RESULTS High-throughput sequencing confirmed the special characteristics and biodiversity of the mucosa microflora in patients with PJS. They had lower bacterial biodiversity than controls. The abundance of intestinal mucosal microflora was significantly lower than that of fecal microflora. In addition, lipid metabolism, amino acid metabolism, carbohydrate metabolism, nucleotide metabolism and other pathways were significantly different from those of controls, which were associated with the development of the enteric nervous system, intestinal inflammation and development of tumors. CONCLUSION This is the first report on the mucosa-associated microbiota and metabolite profile of subjects with PJS, which may be meaningful to provide a structural basis for further research on intestinal microecology in PJS.

Abstract
In this editorial, we comment on the article by Wang et al published in the recent issue of the World Journal of Gastroenterology in 2023. We focused on identifying risk factors for lymph node metastasis (LNM) in superficial esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (SESCC) patients and how to construct a simple and reliable clinical prediction model to assess the risk of LNM in SESCC patients, thereby helping to guide the selection of an appropriate treatment plan. The current standard treatment for SESCC is radical esophagectomy with lymph node dissection. However, esophagectomy is associated with considerable morbidity and mortality. Endoscopic resection (ER) offers a safer and less invasive alternative to surgical resection and can enable the patient's quality of life to be maintained while providing a satisfactory outcome. However, since ER is a localized treatment that does not allow for lymph node dissection, the risk of LNM in SESCC limits the effectiveness of ER. Understanding LNM status can aid in determining whether patients with SESCC can be cured by ER without the need for additional esophagectomy. Previous studies have shown that tumor size, macroscopic type of tumor, degree of differentiation, depth of tumor invasion, and lymphovascular invasion are factors associated with LNM in patients with SESCC. In addition, tumor budding is commonly associated with LNM, recurrence, and distant metastasis, but this topic has been less covered in previous studies. By comprehensively evaluating the above risk factors for LNM, useful evidence can be obtained for doctors to select appropriate treatments for SESCC patients.

Abstract
Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) steering is a quantum effect based on quantum entanglement and it is the key resource for building quantum networks because of its useful properties. Based on the criterion for genuine multipartite EPR steering, the genuine quadripartite EPR steering is confirmed and it can be generated by a spontaneous parametric down-conversion cascaded process with two sum-frequency generations in an optical superlattice. This occurs either below the oscillation threshold and without oscillation threshold. The influence of the parameters of cascaded nonlinear process on the quadripartite EPR steering among signal, idler, and two sum-frequency beams are also discussed. Choosing appropriate nonlinear parameters can achieve good quadripartite quantum steering. This scheme of the generation of genuine quadripartite EPR steering has potential applications in quantum communication and computing.

Abstract
Objective: To compare the 5-year follow-up outcomes of radiofrequency catheter ablation (RFCA) combined with left atrial appendage closure (LAAC) and long-term oral anticoagulant (OAC) after RFCA in patients with atrial fibrillation. Methods: This retrospective cross-sectional study included patients with atrial fibrillation who underwent"one-stop"procedure in the First Affiliated Hospital of Ningbo University from September 2015 to December 2017 (RFCA+LAAC group). Baseline data of patients were collected. Propensity score matching at the ratio of 1∶1 was used to select patients with atrial fibrillation who took long-term OAC after RFCA (RFCA+OAC group). The maintenance rate of sinus rhythm and the incidence of adverse events during follow-up were compared between the two groups. Results: A total of 110 patients were enrolled in the RFCA+LAAC group and RFCA+OAC group, respectively. Age of patients was (67.4±8.8) years in RFCA+LAAC group, and there were 42 (38.2%) female patients. Age of patients was (67.3±7.9) years in RFCA+OAC group, and there were 47 (42.7%) female patients. The patients were followed up for mean of (5.3±1.1) years. There was no significant difference in the maintenance rate of sinus rhythm (log-rank: χ2=0.277, P=0.602) and incidence of ischemic stroke events (2.7% (3/110) vs. 4.5% (5/110), P=0.719) during follow-up between the two groups. The incidence of bleeding events (6.4% (7/110) vs. 18.2% (20/110), P=0.008) and major bleeding events (1.8% (2/110) vs. 8.2% (9/110), P=0.030) was significantly higher in the RFCA+OAC group than in the RFCA+LAAC group. Conclusion: There is no significant difference between RFCA+LAAC group and RFCA+OAC group in maintenance rate of sinus rhythm and incidence of ischemic stroke events. Patients in the RFCA+LAAC group have a lower risk of bleeding events compared to the RFCA+OAC group.

Abstract
Objective The worldwide incidence of primary small intestinal lymphoma (PSIL) is increasing. However, little is known about the clinical and endoscopic characteristics of this disease. The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical and endoscopic data of patients with PSIL, with the goal of enhancing our understanding of the disease, improving diagnostic accuracy, and facilitating more accurate prognosis estimation. Methods Ninety-four patients diagnosed with PSIL were retrospectively studied at Qilu Hospital of Shandong University between 2012 and 2021. The clinical data, enteroscopy findings, treatment modalities, and survival times were collected and analyzed. Results Ninety-four patients (52 males) with PSIL were included in this study. The median age of onset was 58.5 years (range: 19-80 years). Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (n=37) was the most common pathological type. Abdominal pain (n=59) was the most frequent clinical presentation. The ileocecal region (n=32) was the most commonly affected site, and 11.7% of patients had multiple lesions. At the time of diagnosis, the majority of patients (n=68) were in stages I-II. A new endoscopic classification of PSIL was developed, including hypertrophic type, exophytic type, follicular/polypoid type, ulcerative type, and diffusion type. Surgery did not show a significant increase in overall survival; chemotherapy was the most commonly administered treatment. T-cell lymphoma, stages III-IV, "B" symptoms, and ulcerative type were associated with poor prognosis. Conclusion This study provides a comprehensive analysis of the clinical and endoscopic features of PSIL in 94 patients. This highlights the importance of considering clinical and endoscopic characteristics for accurate diagnosis and prognosis estimation during small bowel enteroscopy. Early detection and treatment of PSIL is associated with a favorable prognosis. Our findings also suggest that certain risk factors, such as pathological type, "B" symptoms, and endoscopic type, may affect the survival of PSIL patients. These results underscore the need for careful consideration of these factors in the diagnosis and treatment of PSIL.

Abstract
Crohn's disease (CD) is a chronic inflammatory digestive tract disease, and its pathogenesis involves many factors such as genetics, environment, and flora. In terms of genetic factors, many susceptibility genes and pathogenic pathways of CD are associated with Paneth cells (PCs). Numerous studies have demonstrated that PCs are involved in the pathogenesis of CD by affecting the gut microbiota and inducing intestinal epithelial barrier dysfunction and immune abnormalities. These advances provide new ideas for the prevention of CD and potential therapeutic targets for this disease. This article reviews the role of PCs-associated CD susceptibility genes in the pathogenesis of CD.

Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the feasibility and safety of the LAmbre occluder for large-diameter left atrial appendage occlusion. Methods: This study was a retrospective cohort study. Patients with large orifice of the left atrial appendage (≥31 mm) and occlusion with the LAmbre device in the Arrhythmia Center of Ningbo First Hospital were included from June 2018 to March 2020. Baseline data were collected and major perioperative complications of left atrial appendage occlusion (including death, stroke, instrumental embolism, cardiac tamponade, and major bleeding events) were recorded. Patients were followed up 45 days, 6 months and 12 months after surgery. The shunt and device-related thrombosis were recorded by esophageal cardiac ultrasound or pulmonary vein CT, and the occurrence of postoperative thromboembolism, bleeding events, death and other serious adverse events were recorded. Results: The average age and left atrial appendage ostial dimension of 32 patients (37.5% women) included in this research were (70.4±8.4) years old and (34.4±2.9) mm. The LAmbre device was successfully implanted in 31(96.9%) patients. No major complications occurred during the perioperative period. During the 12-month follow-up, pericardial tamponade occurred in 1(3.2%) patient and was recovered after treatment. There was no occluder edge shunt>5 mm in patients followed up by esophageal echocardiography. No significant peri-device leak, device-related thrombus, thromboembolism or death event has occurred. Conclusion: The LAmbre occluder may be feasible and safe for large-diameter left atrial appendage occlusion.

Abstract

It remains unknown whether gut microbiota dysbiosis is linked to PJS. Aim This study aimed to assess the structure and composition of the gut microbiota, including both bacteria and fungi, in patients with PJS and investigate the relationship between gut microbiota dysbiosis and PJS pathogenesis. Methods The bacterial and fungal composition of the fecal microbiota was analyzed in 23 patients with PJS (cases), 17 first-degree asymptomatic relatives (ARs), and 24 healthy controls (HCs) using 16S (MiSeq) and ITS2 (pyrosequencing) sequencing for bacteria and fungi, respectively. Differential analyses of the intestinal flora were performed from the phylum to species level. Results Alpha-diversity distributions of bacteria and fungi indicated that the abundance of both taxa differed between PJS cases and controls. However, while the diversity and composition of fecal bacteria in PJS cases were significantly different from those in ARs and HCs, fungal flora was more stable. High-throughput sequencing confirmed the special characteristics and biodiversity of the fecal bacterial and fungal microflora in patients with PJS. They had lower bacterial biodiversity than controls, with a higher frequency of the Proteobacteria phylum, Enterobacteriaceae family, and Escherichia-Shigella genus, and a lower frequency of the Firmicutes phylum and the Lachnospiraceae and Ruminococcaceae families. Of fungi, Candida was significantly higher in PJS cases than in controls. Conclusion The findings reported here confirm gut microbiota dysbiosis in patients with PJS. This is the first report on the bacterial and fungal microbiota profile of subjects with PJS, which may be meaningful to provide a structural basis for further research on intestinal microecology in PJS.

Abstract
Background and study aims Bleeding is a common complication of following endoscopy sphincterotomy (EST), and antithrombotic therapy use during the procedure often increases risk of it. Although several guidelines have been released regarding the use of antithrombotic agents during EST, many issues about it remain controversial. We carried out a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the effect of antithrombotic medication on the risk of EST bleeding. Methods A structured literature search was carried out in Web of Science, EMBASE, PubMed, and Cochrane Library databases. RevMan 5.2 was used for meta-analysis to investigate the rate of post-EST bleeding. Results Seven retrospective articles were included. Compared with patients who had never taken antithrombotic drugs, patients who discontinued antithrombotic drugs 1 day before the procedure had a significantly increased risk of post-EST bleeding (OR, 1.95; 95 %CI, 1.57-2.43), particularly for severe bleeding (OR, 1.83; 95 %CI, 1.44-2.34). In addition, compared with patients who discontinued antithrombotic therapy for at least 1 day, patients who continued taking antithrombotic drugs did have an increased risk of post-EST bleeding (OR, 0.70; 95 %CI, 0.40-1.23). Conclusions The use of antithrombotic drugs may increase the bleeding rate of EST, but discontinuing therapy 1 day before endoscopy does not significantly reduce the bleeding rate.

Abstract
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a life-threatening and chronic inflammatory disease of gastrointestinal tissue, with complex pathogenesis. Current research on IBD has mainly focused on bacteria; however, the role of fungi in IBD is largely unknown due to the incomplete annotation of fungi in current genomic databases. With the development of molecular techniques, the gut mycobiome has been found to have great diversity. In addition, increasing evidence has shown intestinal mycobiome plays an important role in the physiological and pathological processes of IBD. In this review, we will systemically introduce the recent knowledge about multi-dimensional fungal dysbiosis associated with IBD, the interactions between fungus and bacteria, the role of fungi in inflammation in IBD, and highlight recent advances in the potential therapeutic role of fungus in IBD, which may hold the keys to develop new predictive, therapeutic or prognostic approaches in IBD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM The effect of real-time analysis of needle-based confocal laser endomicroscopy (nCLE) for gastric subepithelial lesions (SELs) on the diagnostic value is unclear. The study aimed to investigate the diagnostic efficacy of real-time nCLE for gastric SELs and to assess the technical aspects and safety of real-time nCLE. METHODS Consecutive patients with gastric SELs ≥ 1 cm were prospectively investigated by endoscopic ultrasound (EUS), followed by nCLE. During EUS-nCLE, real-time nCLE diagnosis was made by an expert endoscopist. The procedure-relative adverse events were assessed and recorded. One-month washout period later, nCLE videos were reviewed off-line by the same endoscopist. The nCLE diagnoses were compared with corresponding pathological results. Additionally, image quality and interobserver agreements for the criteria were evaluated by three experienced endomicroscopists. RESULTS Except for one failing to be punctured, 60 patients completed EUS-nCLE procedures successfully. Real-time nCLE had high diagnostic accuracies of ≥ 88.3% for gastric SELs. There were no significant differences between real-time and off-line nCLE diagnoses for gastric SELs (P > 0.05). The overall accuracy of real-time nCLE for diagnosis of gastric SELs was 86.7%. There were no procedure-relative adverse events occurred. In addition, the mean image quality score was 3.6 (1 = poor and 5 = excellent). The interobserver agreement was "almost perfect" for ectopic pancreas and "substantial" for gastrointestinal stromal tumor, leiomyoma, and carcinoma. CONCLUSIONS Endoscopic ultrasound-nCLE could provide in vivo real-time diagnostic imaging with a high diagnostic accuracy. Meanwhile, real-time nCLE was feasible and had a satisfactory safety profile.

Abstract
Recently, Einstein-Podolski-Rosen (EPR) steering has important application in quantum information processing, and it has been received considerable attention because of its uniqueness. The properties of quantum steering among three output fields generated by cascaded nonlinear processes of quasi-phase-matching third-harmonic generation in an optical cavity are investigated. Based on the criteria for multipartite EPR steering which proposed by He and Reid [PRL, 111, 250403 (2013)], the genuine tripartite EPR steering among pump, second-harmonic, and third-harmonic is demonstrated. The parameters which affect the quantum property are also discussed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Changes in gut microbiome are closely related to dietary and environment variations, and diurnal circle interventions impact on human metabolism and the microbiome. Changes in human gut microbiome and serum biochemical parameters during long-term isolation in a controlled ecological life support system (CELSS) are of great significance for maintaining the health of crewmembers. The Green Star 180 project performed an integrated study involving a four-person, 180-day duration assessment in a CELSS, during which variations in gut microbiome and the concentration of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D, α-tocopherol, retinol and folic acid from the crewmembers were determined. RESULTS Energy intake and body mass index decreased during the experiment. A trade-off between Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes during the study period was observed. Dynamic variations in the two dominant genus Bacteroides and Prevotella indicated a variation of enterotypes. Both the evenness and richness of the fecal microbiome decreased during the isolation in the CELSS. Transition of diurnal circle from Earth to Mars increased the abundance of Fusobacteria phylum and decreased alpha diversity of the fecal microbiome. The levels of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D in the CELSS were significantly lower than those outside the CELSS. CONCLUSIONS The unique isolation process in the CELSS led to a loss of alpha diversity and a transition of enterotypes between Bacteroides and Prevotella. Attention should therefore be paid to the transition of the diurnal circle and its effects on the gut microbiome during manned Mars explorations. In particular, serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels require monitoring under artificial light environments and during long-term space flight. Large-scale studies are required to further consolidate our findings.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The diagnostic yield of current techniques for gastric subepithelial tumors (SETs) is suboptimal. This prospective study aimed to develop diagnostic criteria for needle-based confocal laser endomicroscopy (nCLE) of gastric SETs, and to evaluate the diagnostic efficacy, feasibility, and safety of endoscopic ultrasound-guided nCLE (EUS-nCLE). METHODS Eligible patients were prospectively recruited to undergo EUS-nCLE. Four unblinded investigators evaluated nCLE videos and corresponding histopathology to develop the nCLE criteria. The recorded nCLE videos were reviewed off-line by one endoscopist 3 months later. Image quality (five-point scale, 1 = poor and 5 = very good) and the interobserver agreements were assessed. RESULTS All 33 patients underwent successful EUS-nCLE procedures. The nCLE criteria for gastric SETs were established. Overall accuracy of off-line nCLE was significantly higher than that of EUS alone (87.9 % vs. 63.6 %; P = 0.02). The mean image quality score was 3.9. The kappa values of the interobserver agreements were 0.66 for gastrointestinal stromal tumor, 0.89 for ectopic pancreas, 0.58 for leiomyoma, and 0.72 for carcinoma. CONCLUSIONS EUS-nCLE was feasible and safe to accurately diagnose gastric SETs.

Abstract
Objective: To discusses the predictive value of typical cataplexy+ HLA-DQB1*0602 positive to hypocretin-1 (HCRT-1) reduction in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in patients with narcolepsy. Methods: A total of 165 narcoleptic patients, who were diagnosed at the Sleep Center of Peking University People's Hospital and Peking University International Hospital from March 2003 to March 2017, were recruited. The CSF HCRT-1 level and DQB1*0602 were measured in all the subjects. The narcoleptic patients were divided into two groups: typical cataplexy+ DQB1*0602 positive were CH group, and others who were not typical cataplexy and DQB1*0602 positive simultaneously were NCH group. The HCRT-1 level in CSF was declared to have a serious reduction when HCRT-1≤110 ng/L. According to this standard, the CH group and NCH group were subdivided into sub-groups and the data was analyzed to investigate the predictive value of typical cataplexy+ HLA-DQB1*0602 positive to HCRT-1 reduction. Results: There were 142 patients in CH group, including 137 patients with HCRT-1 reduction and 5 patients without. There were 23 patients in NCH group, including 15 patients with HCRT-1 reduction and 8 patients without. The positive predictive value of typical cataplexy+ DQB1*0602 positive for the reduction of HCRT-1 in CSF was 96.5%. Typical cataplexy+ DQB1*0602 positive had a good consistency with the HCRT-1 reduction in CSF (χ(2)=26.7, P<0.001). Conclusion: Typical cataplexy+ DQB1*0602 positive has a good predictive value to the HCRT-1 reduction in CSF in patients with narcolepsy.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the effect of different doses of recombinant parathyroid hormone (PTH) (1-34) on osteolysis in a murine calvarial model. Methods: In total, 48 adult male C57BL/J6 mice were randomly divided into four groups: the sham group, the vehicle group, the low dose-, and high dose PTH group (n=12 each group). Mice in the PTH groups were treated with local injection of recombinant PTH at 30 or 60 μg·kg-1·d-1, intermittent injection 3 times per week for two weeks. Mice in the sham and vehicle groups received local injection of saline daily. Two weeks after surgery, calvarial tissue and peripheral blood were harvested for further analysis. Osteolysis was assessed by micro-computed tomography. The mRNA and protein expression of osteoprotegerin (OPG) and receptor activator for nuclear factor-κB Ligand (RANKL) of calvarial tissue and peripheral blood were tested by real-time PCR and ELISA, respectively. Results: Compared with the vehicle group, PTH treatment significantly inhibited the severity of osteolysis and improved the bone volume. Real time-PCR and ELISA showed that PTH significantly increased the mRNA and protein expression of OPG and reduced the RANKL/OPG ratio. Conclusion: These findings suggest that local application of PTH could effectively inhibit wear-particle-induced-osteolysis in a murine calvarial model.

Abstract
Chronic constipation is a prevalent, burdensome gastrointestinal disorder whose aetiology and pathophysiology remains poorly understood and is most likely multifactorial. Differences in the composition of the intestinal microbiota have been demonstrated when constipated patients and healthy controls have been compared. Growing evidence indicates that alterations of intestinal microbiota may contribute to constipation and constipation-related symptoms. The intestinal microbiota is a collection of microorganisms that live within the gastrointestinal tract, and perform many important health-promoting functions. The intestinal microbiota aids in the breakdown of food products into absorbable nutrients, stimulates the host immune system, prevents growth of pathogenic bacteria and produces a great variety of biologically important compounds. In this review, we will summarize the current evidence supporting roles of the intestinal microbiota in the pathogenesis and management of chronic constipation. The discussion will shed light on the novel mechanisms of intestinal microbiota and gut function interactions, which is invaluable in ultimately developing new therapeutic tools for the treatment of chronic constipation.

Abstract
It is found that hydrogelation of peptides enhances the transverse relaxation rate R2 of water protons but has no effect on the longitudinal relaxation rate R1 and the diffusion coefficient D. The magnitude of water proton R2 enhancement increases linearly with the shear modulus G of hydrogels.

Abstract
Colonic brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) plays an essential role in pathogenesis of abdominal pain in diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-D), but regulation on its expression remains unclear. We investigated the role of fecal supernatants (FSN) from IBS-D patients on regulating BDNF expression in colonic epithelial cells of human and mice. Using human Caco-2 cells, we found that IBS-D FSN significantly increased BDNF mRNA and protein levels compared to control FSN, which were remarkably suppressed by the serine protease inhibitor. To further explore the potential mechanisms, we investigated the impact of protease-activated receptor-2 (PAR-2) on BDNF expression. We found a significant increase in PAR-2 expression in Caco-2 after IBS-D FSN stimulation. Knockdown of PAR-2 significantly inhibited IBS-D FSN-induced upregulation of BDNF. Moreover, we found that phosphorylation of p38 MAPK, not NF-κB p65, contributed to PAR-2-mediated BDNF overexpression. To confirm these results, we intracolonically infused IBS-D or control FSN in mice and found that IBS-D FSN significantly elevated colonic BDNF and visceral hypersensitivity in mice, which were both suppressed by the inhibitor of serine protease or antagonist of PAR-2. Together, our data indicate that activation of PAR-2 signaling by IBS-D FSN promotes expression of colonic BDNF, thereby contributing to IBS-like visceral hypersensitivity.

Abstract
The intestinal epithelium constitutes a physical and functional barrier between the external environment and the host organism. It is formed by a continuous monolayer of intestinal epithelial cells maintained together by intercellular junctional complex, limiting access of pathogens, toxins and xenobiotics to host tissues. Once this barrier integrity is disrupted, inflammatory disorders and tissue injury are initiated and perpetuated. Beneath the intestinal epithelial cells lies a population of astrocyte-like cells that are known as enteric glia. The morphological characteristics and expression markers of these enteric glia cells were identical to the astrocytes of the central nervous system. In the past few years, enteric glia have been demonstrated to have a trophic and supporting relationship with intestinal epithelial cells. Enteric glia lesions and/or functional defects can be involved in the barrier dysfunction. Besides, factors secreted by enteric glia are important for the regulation of gut barrier function. Moreover, enteric glia have an important impact on epithelial cell transcriptome and induce a shift in epithelial cell phenotype towards increased cell adhesion and cell differentiation. Enteric glia can also preserve epithelial barrier against intestinal bacteria insult. In this review, we will describe the current body of evidence supporting functional roles of enteric glia on intestinal barrier.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Functional gastrointestinal disorders, including functional dyspepsia, irritable bowel syndrome and functional constipation are very common worldwide. OBJECTIVE This research aims to estimate the prevalence and associated factors involved in functional gastrointestinal disorders in Chinese college and university students using the Rome III criteria. METHODS A total of 5000 students from Shandong University in China were asked in January-May 2012 to complete questionnaires, including the Rome III questionnaire, hospital anxiety and depression scale, and negative life events scale. RESULTS Based on the 4638 students who completed the questionnaire, the prevalence of functional dyspepsia, irritable bowel syndrome and functional constipation in college and university students of North China worked out to be 9.25%, 8.34% and 5.45% respectively. They were more frequent in female students. The factors of anxiety (OR 1.07; 95% CI 0.99 to 1.16, P=0.002<0.05) and depression (OR 0.55; 95% CI 0.15 to 1.05, P=0.045<0.05) indicated a high risk of causing irritable bowel syndrome. CONCLUSION Functional dyspepsia, irritable bowel syndrome and functional constipation were common in college and university students of North China. Psychological disorders such as anxiety and depression provide significant risk factors for irritable bowel syndrome patients.

Abstract
H2AX, a histone H2A variant, has a key role in the cellular response to DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs). H2AX senses DSBs through rapid serine 139 phosphorylation, concurrently leading to the formation of phospho-(γ)H2AX foci with various proteins. However, in the cells with different sensitivity to ionizing radiation (IR)-induced DSBs, still incomplete are those specific proteins selectively recruited by γH2AX to decide different cell fates. Because the abundance of γH2AX indicates the extent of DSBs, we first identified IR-induced dose-dependent H2AX-interacting partners and found that Bcl-2-associated transcription factor 1 (BCLAF1/Btf) showed enhanced association with γH2AX only under high-dose radiation. In acutely irradiated cells, BCLAF1 promoted apoptosis of irreparable cells through disturbing p21-mediated inhibition of Caspase/cyclin E-dependent, mitochondrial-mediated pathways. Meanwhile, BCLAF1 co-localized with γH2AX foci in nuclei and stabilized the Ku70/DNA-PKcs complex therein, facilitating non-homologous end joining (NHEJ)-based DSB repair in surviving cells. In tumor cells, BCLAF1 was intrinsically suppressed, leading to formation of anti-apoptotic Ku70-Bax complexes and disruption of Ku70/DNA-PKcs complexes, all of which contribute to tumor-associated apoptotic resistance and cell survival with defective NHEJ DNA repair. For the first time, our studies reveal that, based on the extent of DNA damage, BCLAF1 is involved in the γH2AX-mediated regulation of apoptosis and DNA repair, and is a γH2AX-interacting tumor suppressor.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a member of the neurotrophin family, may play a critical role in many chronic pain conditions. The possible involvement of BDNF in the altered gut sensation in patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) was investigated in the present study. METHODS Rectosigmoid biopsies were collected from 40 patients with IBS fulfilling the Rome II criteria and 21 healthy controls. Abdominal pain was quantified by a validated questionnaire. The presence of BDNF and nerve fibres in the mucosa was assessed by immunohistochemistry. The structure of mucosal nerve fibres was assessed by transmission electron microscopy. Mucosal BDNF release was measured by ELISA and correlated with abdominal pain scores. Animal studies using BDNF(+/-) mice were carried out to evaluate visceral sensitivity, mucosal nerve fibre density and ultrastructural changes. Alterations of visceral sensitivity and TrkB expression in dorsal root ganglia were examined in BDNF(+/+) mice following different doses of BDNF administration. RESULTS Biopsies from patients with IBS revealed a significant upregulation of BDNF (p=0.003), as compared with controls. Total nerve fibres were also substantially increased in patients with IBS. Electron microscopy showed ultrastructural damage on the mucosal nerve fibres (eg, swollen mitochondria and nerve axons). Elevated BDNF release was significantly correlated with the abdominal pain scores. Meanwhile, abdominal withdrawal reflex scores to colorectal distension and mucosal protein gene product 9.5 immunoreactivity were significantly lowered in BDNF(+/-) than in BDNF(+/+) mice. Electron microscopy showed degenerative changes on the mucosal nerve fibres in BDNF(+/-) mice. Exogenous BDNF induced an obvious dose-dependent increase in TrkB expression in dorsal root ganglia and dose-dependent decrease in threshold pressure in BDNF(+/+) mice. CONCLUSIONS The increased expression of BDNF in colonic mucosa, together with the structural alterations of mucosal innervation, may contribute to the visceral hyperalgesia in IBS.

Abstract
A new scheme is presented to directly produce fundamental, second-, and third-harmonic three-color continuous-variable (CV) entangled beams by cascaded quasi-phase-matched third-harmonic generation (THG) in an optical cavity. THG can be achieved with high efficiency through a coupled sum-frequency process between the second-harmonic and the fundamental fields. It is demonstrated that the three beams (fundamental, second-, and third-harmonic fields) are entangled with each other according to the CV entanglement criterion. In this scheme, only one crystal and one pump field can generate three-color CV entangled beams separated by an octave in frequency through quasi-phase-matched cascaded nonlinear process, which may be very useful for the applications in quantum communication and computation networks.

Abstract
AIM: To estimate the prevalence of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) in college and university students of North China and certain related factors for IBS.
METHODS: A total of 2500 students from Shandong University in North China were asked in February-March 2009 to complete questionnaires, including the Rome III questionnaire, hospital anxiety and depression scale, and IBS-quality of life questionnaire (IBS-QOL).
RESULTS: Among the 2126 students with complete data, the prevalence of IBS was 7.85% according to the Rome III criteria, with a female/male ratio of 1.78:1. Most students had the IBS-constipation subtype (36.5%), followed by IBS-diarrhea subtype (31.1%) and IBS-mixed subtype (23.9%). The students with IBS had a higher anxiety and depression score than those without IBS. Low exercise level and anxiety indicated a high risk for IBS. The mean score of IBS patients was 74.2 ± 4.242 on the IBS-QOL.
CONCLUSION: The prevalence of IBS is 7.85% in Chinese college and university students according to the Rome III criteria. Low exercise level and anxiety may be the risk factors for IBS.

Abstract
Stressfull life events have powerful influences on visceral perception of certain IBS patients. In the present study, we aimed to examine the involvement of TRPV1 and TRPA1 in the stress-induced visceral hyperalgesia. Rats were exposed to 1-h water avoidance stress (WAS) daily for 10 consecutive days. The abdominal withdrawal reflex (AWR) to colorectal distension was assessed at the end of the 10-day period. Western-blotting analysis was applied to investigate the alterations of TRPV1 and TRPA1 in the colonic afferent dorsal root ganglia (DRG). Compared with control rats, the WAS-treated rats demonstrated a significant increase in the AWR with the pressure > or = 40 mm Hg (P < 0.05). Meanwhile, in the WAS-treated rats, western-blotting analysis showed significant upregulation of TRPV1 and TRPA1 in the colonic afferent DRG. The results indicate that WAS could induce the upregulation of TRPV1 and TRPA1 in the colonic afferent DRG, and both receptors may be candidate molecules involved in the stress-induced visceral hyperalgesia in rats.

Abstract
To assess the relative importance of backbone hydrogen bonding (H-bonding) vs. side chain hydrophobicity in protein structural formation, a method called side chain-backbone swap is proposed. Such a method swaps the side chain and backbone portions of certain amino acid residues, such as Asp, Glu, Asn, Gln, Lys, and Arg. Such a swap retains the sequence of a polypeptide and preserves the identity of the backbone linkage. On the other hand, the swap disrupts backbone H-bonding geometry because of the introduction of extra methylene groups into the peptide backbone. In this project, we chose the two-stranded alpha-helical coiled-coil to implement side chain-backbone swap. A pair of 36-residue peptides was designed. The two peptides have identical sequence with four residues in each heptad repeat occupied by glutamyl residues. Each glutamic acid was incorporated either as alpha-glutamyl residue (the peptide is denoted as alpha-Glu-36) or as gamma-glutamyl residue (the peptide is denoted as gamma-Glu-36). The inter-conversion between the two peptides constitutes a side chain-backbone swap. Residues constituting the hydrophobic core of the coiled-coil, however, are left unchanged. The peptide pair was characterized by circular dichroism spectroscopy, reversed-phase liquid chromatography (RPLC), and two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The results indicate that alpha-Glu-36 is a two-stranded alpha-helical coiled-coil while gamma-Glu-36 lacks stable structural elements. It is concluded that, at least for coiled-coils where hydrophobic interactions are predominantly long-range, local backbone H-bonding is a required for structural formation, consistent with a hierarchic folding mechanism. The methodological implication of side chain-backbone swap is also discussed.

Abstract
In this research, The functional components of vegetable oils were analyzed by near infrared (NIR) spectral technology. The optimum conditions of mathematics model of four components (C16 : 0, C18 : 0, C18 : 1, C18 : 2) were studied, including the sample set selection, chemical value analysis, the detection methods and condition. Chemical value was analyzed by HPLC. 52 samples were selected, 41 for modeling set and 11 for testing set. All samples were placed in 5mm thick sample pools and swept by near infrared (NIR) with discrimination factor 8 cm(-1) without any other disposal. Using PLS methods sated model. Data were processed by first derivative method and centering method. 5 000-9 000 cm(-1) spectral region was analyzed. Correlating index (r), RMSECV and RMSEP were chose as evaluation index. The result demonstrated that the correlation between the reference value of the modeling sample set and the near infrared predictive value were r(C16 : 0) = 0.891, r(C18 : 0) = 0.837, r(C18 : 1) = 0.982, r(C18 : 2) = 0.971, respectively. And the correlation between the reference value of the testing sample set and the near infrared predictive value were 0.921, 0.891, 0.946 and 0.949, respectively. It proved that the near infrared predictive value was linear with chemical value and the mathematical model established for components of vegetable oils was feasible. For validation, 8 unknown samples were selected to be analysis by infrared (NIR). The result demonstrated that error between predict value and chemical value was less than 10%. That was to say infrared (NIR) had a good veracity in analysis components of vegetable oil. Because infrared (NIR) spectral technology is convenient, rapid than HPLC in oil components analysis, moreover, infrared (NIR) can analyze many components at the same time. It must have great application prospect in vegetable oil components analysis.

Abstract
This study was conducted to evaluate the treatability of OMW (olive mill wastewater) with sewage and sewage sludge, which could supplement nutrients and microbes required for OMW treatment and reduce its possible toxicity. The amount of OMW added to an aeration tank was based on the loading difference between the designed and actual COD loads, while the amount added to anaerobic digestion for energy recovery was determined by CH4 production. The COD removal efficiencies were 70-85% for both systems. Compost of OMW with dried sewage sludge also showed a similar temperature profile without OMW addition. This strongly suggested that OMW can be treated at a sewage plant without pretreatment and the treated effluent can be reused in irrigation for an arid region.

Abstract
A statistical algorithm, capable of generating a large number of freely jointed hard sphere chains, is presented. This is the first of a series of algorithms being developed to model unfolded proteins by different modes of hard sphere chains. The aim of these studies is to systematically investigate the effects of different factors, such as atomic radii, bond angles, torsion angles, chain length, etc., on the conformation of unfolded proteins and other random polymers. As continuous models, various types of hard sphere chains enable one to isolate the aforementioned factors one at a time for investigation and thus are advantageous over discrete lattice models. In particular, the freely jointed hard sphere chain model allows one to evaluate the excluded volume effect. As a first step in this endeavor, the average determinant D(N, r) and the average trace T(N, r) of the inertial tensor A of the random chains were calculated at various sphere radii r and chain lengths N. It is found that both the average determinant D(N, r) and the average trace T(N, r) scale linearly with chain length N after logarithmic transformation. However, the critical exponent of D(N, r) increases with r faster than that of T(N, r) as a result of the non-commutativity between the det operator and the average operator < >. The significance of the algorithm and the results obtained on understanding random polypeptide chains are discussed.

Abstract
It is pointed out that even though the standard state for solutions is a fictitious state, it nonetheless should be thermodynamically self-consistent. Using a volumetric constraint, it is shown that the biochemical standard state concentration of 1M is too high for macromolecules like proteins and nucleic acids that it violates volumetric self-consistency. Also, at 1 M standard state, the mole fraction of these macromolecular solutes is not the commonly held value of 1/55.5, but rather a meaningless negative number. Thus, the ideal mixing entropy (also called cratic entropy) cannot be meaningfully calculated for macromolecules at such a standard state. The relevance of this conclusion to the interpretation of standard bimolecular binding entropy is discussed.
