Prevalence of internet addiction among Syrian undergraduate medical students

The purpose of this study is to determine the prevalence and risk factors for internet addiction disorder among Syrian medical students. Syrian medical students from 8 different universities participated in an online cross-sectional questionnaire study between May 13 and June 16, 2022. DASS-21 Depression, Anxiety, Stress Scale, and Internet Addiction Test were the 3 main determinants of the questionnaire. One thousand nine hundred fifty-three medical students from 8 different Syrian universities have participated in our cross-sectional. Half of the participants were from the Syrian private and Damascus universities. 62.1% were females, and most participants had good academic degrees (70-90/100). Sixty-nine percent of the study participants thought that COVID19 increased internet use rates. The Internet Addiction Scale's average score was 33.48 ± 16.29 (1-100). The total young internet addiction test score was high among medical students from the faculty of medicine university, students from Damascus University, males, smokers, and medical students with lower academic credentials than other subgroups. Both the relationship between internet addiction and DASS-21 subgroups and the correlation between DASS-21 subgroups were statistically significant. Our research showed that internet addiction was widespread among Syrian medical students, particularly when used more for entertainment than educational purposes. Additionally, it was linked to poor academic degrees in the exams at the university and mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety, and stress.

Controlled extended octenidine release from a bacterial nanocellulose/Poloxamer hybrid system

Although bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) has been widely investigated in the last 10years as drug delivery system, up to now no long-term controlled release of drugs could be realized. Therefore, the aim of the present work was the development of a BNC-based drug delivery system that provides prolonged retention time for the antiseptic octenidine up to one week with improved mechanical and antimicrobial properties as well as a high biocompatibility. BNC was modified by incorporation of differently concentrated Poloxamers 338 and 407 as micelles and gels that were extensively investigated regarding size, surface charge, and dynamic viscosity. Depending on type and concentration of the Poloxamer, a retarded octenidine release up to one week could be accomplished. Additionally, superior material properties such as high compression stability and water binding could be achieved. The antimicrobial activity of octenidine against Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa was not changed by the use of Poloxamers. Excellent biocompatibility of the Poloxamer loaded BNC could be demonstrated after local administration in a shell-less hen's egg model. In conclusion, a long-term delivery system consisting of BNC and Poloxamer could be developed for octenidine as a ready-to-use system e.g. for long-term dermal wound treatment.

Monitoring of ¹³⁷Cs fallout in Syrian environment

This paper presents measurements of cesium 137 ((137)Cs) in the Syrian environment during the period between 2006 and 2010. More than 1,000 samples of soil, water, plants and aquatic life were collected from different locations. The measurements were realized using gamma spectroscopy, and the results showed that radioactivity concentrations were low overall. Concentrations ranged from below detection limits to several tens Bq kg(-1) (dry matter) or 9.8 mBq L(-1) (water), which were well below maximum allowable levels in food or drinking water as established according to Syrian national standards or the WHO/FAO Codex guidelines. However, high (137)Cs activity levels were observed in soil samples collected at a high elevation (Kadmous highs), where a mean concentration of 1,900 Bq kg(-1) was obtained.
