Abstract
Transfusion reactions induced by platelet transfusions may be reduced and alleviated by leukocyte reduction of platelets. Although leukoreduction of apheresis platelets can be performed either pre-storage or post-storage, seldom studies directly compare the incidence of transfusion reaction in these two different blood products. We conducted a retrospective study to compare the transfusion reactions between pre-storage and post-storage leukoreduced apheresis platelets. We reviewed the general characteristics and the transfusion reactions, symptoms, and categories for inpatients who received pre-storage or post-storage leukoreduced apheresis platelets. Propensity-score matching was performed to adjust for baseline differences between groups. A total of 40,837 leukoreduction apheresis platelet orders were reviewed. 116 (0.53%) transfusion reactions were reported in 21,884 transfusions with pre-storage leukoreduction, and 174 (0.91%) reactions were reported in 18,953 transfusions with post-storage leukoreduction. Before propensity-score matching, the odds ratio for transfusion reactions in the pre-storage group relative to the post-storage group was 0.57 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.45-0.72, P < 0.01); the odds ratio after matching was 0.63 (95% CI 0.49-0.80, P < 0.01). A two-proportion z-test revealed pre-storage leukoreduction significantly decreases the symptoms of chills, fever, itching, urticaria, dyspnea, and hypertension as compared with those in post-storage leukoreduction. Pre-storage leukoreduced apheresis platelet significantly decreased febrile non-hemolytic transfusion reaction as compared with post-storage groups. This study suggests pre-storage leukoreduction apheresis platelet significantly decreases the transfusion reaction as compared with those in post-storage leukoreduction.

Abstract
Combining epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) with an anti- vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) agent, bevacizumab or ramucirumab, is indicated for advanced lung adenocarcinoma harboring EGFR mutation. This study aimed to show the real-world data of combination therapy and compare the effectiveness between bevacizumab and ramucirumab in combination with an EGFR-TKI. This retrospective study enrolled 47 patients diagnosed of stage IV lung adenocarcinoma with exon 19 deletion or L858R point mutation, receiving a first-line EGFR-TKI with anti-VEGF agent, including 34 (72%) and 13 (28%) patients receiving bevacizumab and ramucirumab, respectively. The response rate was similar in both groups (p = 0.38). Patients receiving bevacizumab had similar progression free survival (PFS) as those receiving ramucirumab (median PFS: 21.9 vs. 24.2 months, p = 0.4871); similar finding was noted in overall survival (OS) (median OS: 33.5 months vs. not reached, p = 0.4618). Patients receiving ramucirumab experienced a significantly high-grade hypertension compared to those receiving bevacizumab (p = 0.0351). Multivariable Cox regression analysis found independent risk factors for worse PFS included poorer ECOG performance status, multiple (≥3) metastatic sites, brain metastasis, and pleural metastasis/effusion, while the type of anti-VEGF agent was not a risk factor. Pericardial metastasis/effusion was the only one independent risk factor for worse OS. In summary, ramucirumab may have similar effectiveness as bevacizumab in combination with an EGFR-TKI as first line therapy for advanced lung adenocarcinoma harboring susceptible EGFR mutation. Further large-scale registry-based cohort studies may be needed to validate our findings.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Procalcitonin (PCT) has garnered attention as a potential diagnostic biomarker for infection in cancer patients. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of procalcitonin (PCT) and to compare it with C-reactive protein (CRP) in adult non-neutropenic cancer patients with suspected infection. METHODS A systematic literature search was performed in MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials to identify all relevant diagnostic accuracy studies. Original articles reporting the diagnostic accuracy of PCT for infection detection in adult patients with solid or hematological malignancies were included. The pooled sensitivity, specificity, positive likelihood ratio, negative likelihood ratio, diagnostic odds ratio, area under the hierarchical summary receiver operator characteristic (HSROC) curve, and corresponding 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated. RESULTS Seven studies were included in the meta-analysis. The pooled sensitivity and specificity of PCT were 60% (95% CI [45-74%]) and 78% (95% CI [69-86%]). The diagnostic odds ratio was estimated at 5.47 (95% CI [2.86-10.46]). Three studies compared the diagnostic accuracies of PCT and CRP. The pooled sensitivity and specificity values for PCT were 57% (95% CI [26-83%]) and 75% (95% CI [68-82%]), and those for CRP were 67% (95% CI [35-88%]) and 73% (95% CI [69-77%]). The pooled sensitivity and specificity of PCT and CRP did not differ significantly (p = 0.61 and p = 0.63). The diagnostic accuracy of PCT was similar to that of CRP as measured by the area under the HSROC curve (0.73, CI = 0.61-0.91 vs. 0.74, CI = 0.61-0.95, p = 0.93). CONCLUSION While elevated PCT levels can be indicative of potential infection, they should not be solely relied upon to exclude infection. We recommend not using the PCT test in isolation; Instead, it should be carefully interpreted in the context of clinical findings.

Abstract
In this study, the successful synthesis of bimetallic nickel/cobalt phosphide nanosheets (Ni-Co-P NSs) via the hydrothermal method and the subsequent high-temperature phosphorization process were both confirmed. Ni-Co-P NSs exhibited excellent electrocatalytic activity for the electrochemical non-enzymatic DA sensing. The surface morphologies and physicochemical properties of Ni-Co-P NSs were characterized by atomic force microscopy (AFM), field-emission scanning (FESEM), field-emission transmission electron microscopy (FETEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Further, the electrochemical performance was evaluated by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). The metallic nature of phosphide and the synergistic effect of Ni/Co atoms in Ni-Co-P NSs provided abundant catalytic active sites for the electrochemical redox reaction of DA, which exhibited a remarkable consequence with a wide linear range from 0.3~50 μM, a high sensitivity of 2.033 µA µM-1 cm-2, a low limit of detection of 0.016 µM, and anti-interference ability. As a result, the proposed Ni-Co-P NSs can be considered an ideal electrode material for the electrochemical non-enzymatic DA sensing.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/PURPOSE Pulmonary alveolar proteinosis (PAP) is rare disease manifested as alveolar macrophage dysfunction and abnormal accumulation of surfactant protein in the alveoli. In this nationwide, population-based study, we investigated the epidemiology of PAP in Taiwan, and discovered the comorbidities and prognostic factors of PAP. METHODS From the National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD), we obtained comprehensive information about all patients of PAP in Taiwan between 1995 and 2013. The incidence, baseline characteristics comorbidities, and prognostic factors of PAP were investigated. RESULTS The annual incidence rate of PAP was around 0.79 (range: 0.49-1.17) patients per million people after 2000, and the prevalence rate was 7.96 patients per million people by the end of 2013. In total, 276 patients of PAP were identified, including 177 (64%) and 99 (36%) patients with primary and secondary PAP, respectively. The median age of diagnosis was 53.8 years. The median survival was 9.6 years after the initial PAP diagnosis, and the 5-year survival rate was 65.96%. Twenty (7%) patients received whole lung lavage (WLL) within three months after the diagnosis had significantly better survival compared to the others. Multivariable Cox regression analyses showed that elder age, secondary PAP, and malignancy were associated with poorer survival, while WLL within 3 months of diagnosis might greatly improve the survival. CONCLUSION We demonstrated the epidemiology of PAP in Taiwan, showing several poor prognostic factors and the potential effectiveness of WLL. Further prospective studies based on registry are warranted to improve the diagnosis and treatment of PAP.

Abstract
Afatinib is an irreversible tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) targeting the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), which is utilized for the treatment of patients with advanced lung cancer that harbors EGFR mutations. No studies have evaluated the clinical efficacy of LCT in patients treated with first-line afatinib. In this study, we retrospectively enrolled patients with advanced lung adenocarcinomas harboring susceptible EGFR mutations who were diagnosed and treated with first-line afatinib in three hospitals. A total of 254 patients were enrolled, including 30 (12%) patients who received LCT (15 patients received definitive radiotherapy for the primary lung mass and 15 patients received curative surgery). Patients who received LCT had a significantly longer PFS than those who did not (median PFS: 32.8 vs. 14.5 months, p = 0.0008). Patients who received LCT had significantly longer OS than those who did not (median OS: 67.1 vs. 34.5 months, p = 0.0011). Multivariable analysis showed LCT was an independent prognostic factor for improved PFS (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR] [95% confidence interval (CI)]: 0.44 [0.26–0.73], p = 0.0016) and OS (aHR [95% CI]: 0.26 [0.12–0.54], p = 0.0004). The analyses using propensity score-weighting showed consistent results. We conclude that LCT may improve clinical outcomes, in terms of PFS and OS, in patients with advanced EGFR-mutant lung adenocarcinomas who are treated with first-line afatinib.

Abstract
Brain metastasis in patients with non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) harboring epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutations is a factor of poor prognosis. We conducted a retrospective study to determine the optimal treatment strategy for EGFR-mutant NSCLC patients with brain metastasis receiving or not receiving intracranial intervention. A total of 186 patients treated with an EGFR TKI were enrolled in the study, and 79 (42%) received intracranial intervention. Patients who received intracranial intervention and those who did not had a similar treatment response rate (RR), progression-free survival (PFS) (median PFS: 11.0 vs. 10.0 months, p = 0.4842), and overall survival (OS) (median OS: 23.0 vs. 23.2 months, p = 0.2484). Patients treated with gefitinib, erlotinib, afatinib, or osimertinib had a similar RR (63%, 76%, 81%, or 100%, respectively, p = 0.1390), but they had significantly different PFS (median PFS: 7.5, 10.0, 14.8 months, or not reached, respectively, p = 0.0081). In addition, OS tended to be different between different EGFR TKI treatments (median OS of 19.2, 23.7, or 33.0 months for gefitinib, erlotinib, or afatinib treatments, respectively, p = 0.0834). Afatinib and osimertinib both demonstrated significantly longer PFS than gefitinib in a Cox regression model. Graded prognostic assessment (GPA) versions 2017 and 2022 stratified patients with different OS; patients with higher GPA index scores had significantly longer OS (p = 0.0368 and 0.0407 for version 2017 and 2022, respectively).

Abstract
NiCoP nanosheets (NSs) were successfully synthesized using the hydrothermal and high-temperature phosphorization process. The obtained NiCoP NSs were immobilized on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) and used to construct a novel sensing platform for electrochemical non-enzymatic H2O2 sensing. Physicochemical characteristics of NiCoP NSs were obtained by field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), field-emission transmission electron microscope (FETEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). In addition, the electrochemical properties of NiCoP NSs were obtained by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and chronoamperometry (CA) towards the non-enzymatic detection of H2O2. FESEM and FETEM images provided a morphological insight (the unique nanosheets morphology of NiCoP) that could expose more active sites to promote mass/charge transport at the electrode/electrolyte interface. XRD and XPS results also confirmed the crystalline nature of the NiCoP nanosheets and the coexistence of multiple transitional metal oxidation states in NiCoP nanosheets. These unique physicochemical characteristics had a degree of contribution to ensuring enhancement in the electrochemical behavior. As a result, the synthesized NiCoP NSs composed of intercalated nanosheets, as well as the synergistic interaction between bimetallic Ni/Co and P atoms exhibited excellent electrocatalytical activity towards H2O2 electroreduction at neutral medium. As the results showed, the electrochemical sensing based on NiCoP NSs displayed a linear range of 0.05~4 mM, a sensitivity of 225.7 μA mM-1 cm-2, a limit of detection (LOD) of 1.190 μM, and good selectivity. It was concluded that NiCoP NSs-based electrochemical sensing might open new opportunities for future construction of H2O2 sensing platforms.

Abstract
In this study, nanostructured gold was successfully prepared on a bare Au electrode using the electrochemical deposition method. Nanostructured gold provided more exposed active sites to facilitate the ion and electron transfer during the electrocatalytic reaction of organophosphorus pesticide (methyl parathion). The morphological and structural characterization of nanostructured gold was conducted using field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD), which was further carried out to evaluate the electrocatalytic activity towards methyl parathion sensing. The electrochemical performance of nanostructured gold was investigated by electrochemical measurements (cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV)). The proposed nanostructured gold-modified electrode exhibited prominent electrochemical methyl parathion sensing performance (including two linear concentration ranges from 0.01 to 0.5 ppm (R2 = 0.993) and from 0.5 to 4 ppm (R2 = 0.996), limit of detection of 5.9 ppb, excellent selectivity and stability), and excellent capability in determination of pesticide residue in real fruit and vegetable samples (bok choy and strawberry). The study demonstrated that the presented approach to fabricate a nanostructured gold-modified electrode could be practically applied to detect pesticide residue in agricultural products via integrating the electrochemical and gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC/MS-MS) analysis.

Abstract
Collective migration is important to embryonic development and cancer metastasis, but migratory and nonmigratory cell fate discrimination by differential activity of signal pathways remains elusive. In Drosophila oogenesis, Jak/Stat signaling patterns the epithelial cell fates in early egg chambers but later renders motility to clustered border cells. How Jak/Stat signal spatiotemporally switches static epithelia to motile cells is largely unknown. We report that a nuclear protein, Dysfusion, resides on the inner nuclear membrane and interacts with importin α/β and Nup153 to modulate Jak/Stat signal by attenuating Stat nuclear import. Dysfusion is ubiquitously expressed in oogenesis but specifically down-regulated in border cells when migrating. Increase of nuclear Stat by Dysfusion down-regulation triggers invasive cell behavior and maintains persistent motility. Mammalian homolog of Dysfusion (NPAS4) also negatively regulates the nuclear accumulation of STAT3 and cancer cell migration. Thus, our finding demonstrates that Dysfusion-dependent gating mechanism is conserved and may serve as a therapeutic target for Stat-mediated cancer metastasis.

Abstract
The nervous and endocrine systems coordinate with each other to closely influence physiological and behavioural responses in animals. Here we show that WAKE (encoded by wide awake, also known as wake) modulates membrane levels of GABAA receptor Resistance to Dieldrin (Rdl), in insulin-producing cells of adult male Drosophila melanogaster. This results in changes to secretion of insulin-like peptides which is associated with changes in juvenile hormone biosynthesis in the corpus allatum, which in turn leads to a decrease in 20-hydroxyecdysone levels. A reduction in ecdysone signalling changes neural architecture and lowers the perception of the male-specific sex pheromone 11-cis-vaccenyl acetate by odorant receptor 67d olfactory neurons. These finding explain why WAKE-deficient in Drosophila elicits significant male-male courtship behaviour. The authors show that the Drosophila master regulator WAKE modulates the secretion of insulin-like peptides, triggering a decrease in 20-hydroxyecdysone levels. This lowers the perception of a male-specific sex pheromone and explains why WAKE-deficient Drosophila flies show male-male courtship behaviour.

Abstract
Morphologically tunable copper oxide-based nanomaterials on Cu wire have been synthesized through a one-step alkali-assisted surface oxidation process for non-enzymatic glucose sensing. Subsequently, copper oxide-based nanomaterials on Cu wire as a supporting matrix to deposit manganese oxide for the construction of heterostructured Mn-Cu bimetallic oxide architectures through spontaneous redox reaction in the KMnO4 solution for supercapacitors. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), field emission transmission electron microscopy (FETEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed that morphological and phase transformation from Cu(OH)2 to CuO occurred in copper oxide-based nanomaterials on Cu wire with different degrees of growth reaction. In non-enzymatic glucose sensing, morphologically tunable copper oxide-based nanomaterials owned the high tunability of electrocatalytically active sites and intrinsic catalytic activity to meet efficient glucose electrooxidation for obtaining promoted non-enzymatic glucose sensing performances (sensitivity of 2331 μA mM−1 cm−2 and the limit of detection of 0.02 mM). In the supercapacitor, heterostructured Mn–Cu bimetallic oxide-based nanomaterials delivered abundant redox-active sites and continuous conductive network to optimize the synergistic effect of Mn and Cu redox species for boosting the pseudo-capacitance performance (areal capacitance value of 79.4 mF cm−2 at 0.2 mA cm−2 current density and capacitance retention of 74.9% after 1000 cycles). It concluded that morphologically tunable copper oxide-based nanomaterials on Cu wire with/without deposition of manganese oxide could be good candidates for the future design of synergistic multifunctional materials in electrochemical techniques.

Abstract
A simple, efficient, and cost-effective extended graphite as a supporting platform further supported the MnO2 growth for the construction of hierarchical flower-like MnO2/extended graphite. MnO2/extended graphite exhibited an increase in sp2 carbon bonds in comparison with that of extended graphite. It can be expected to display better electrical conductivity and further promote electron/ion transport kinetics for boosting the electrochemical performance in supercapacitors and glucose sensing. In supercapacitors, MnO2/extended graphite delivered an areal capacitance value of 20.4 mF cm−2 at 0.25 mA cm−2 current densities and great cycling stability (capacitance retention of 83% after 1000 cycles). In glucose sensing, MnO2/extended graphite exhibited a good linear relationship in glucose concentration up to about 5 mM, sensitivity of 43 μA mM−1cm−2, and the limit of detection of 0.081 mM. It is further concluded that MnO2/extended graphite could be a good candidate for the future design of synergistic multifunctional materials in electrochemical techniques.

Abstract
Sciatic nerve injuries, not uncommon in trauma with a limited degree of functional recovery, are considered a persistent clinical, social, and economic problem worldwide. Accumulating evidence suggests that stem cells can promote the tissue regeneration through various mechanisms. The aim of the present study was to investigate the role of adipose tissue–derived stem cells (ADSCs) and combine with platelet-rich fibrin releasate (PRFr) in the regeneration of sciatic nerve injury in rats. Twenty-four Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned to four groups, a blade was used to transect the left hindlimb sciatic nerve, and silicon tubes containing one of the following (by injection) were used to bridge the nerve proximal and distal ends (10-mm gap): group 1: untreated controls; group 2: PRFr alone; group 3: ADSCs alone; group 4: PRFr + ADSCs-treated. Walking function was assessed in horizontal rung ladder apparatus to compare the demands of the tasks and test sensitivity at 1-mo interval for a total of 3 mo. The gross inspection and histological examination was performed at 3 mo post transplantation. Overall, PRFr + ADSCs-treated performed better compared with PRFr or ADSCs injections alone. Significant group differences of neurological function were observed in ladder rung walking tests in all treated groups compared to that of untreated controls (P < 0.05). This injection approach may provide a successfully employed technique to target sciatic nerve defects in vivo, and the combined strategy of ADSCs with PRFr appears to have a superior effect on nerve repair.

Abstract
Nanocomposites of the binary transition metal sulfide Zn-Co-S/graphene (Zn-Co-S@G) were synthesized through a one-step hydrothermal method. They may be useful in the construction of an electrochemical immunosensor for carbohydrate antigen 19-9 (CA19-9) detection. Zn-Co-S dot-like nanoparticles uniformly covered the surface of graphene to form an interconnected conductive network, ensuring strong interaction between transition metal sulfide and graphene, which can expose numerous electroactive sites leading to the improvement of the amplified electrochemical signal toward a direct reduction of H2O2. Thus, the construction of an electrochemical immunosensor using Zn-Co-S@G nanocomposites showed outstanding sensing properties for detecting CA19-9. The constructed electrochemical immunosensor exhibited a good linear relationship in the range of 6.3 U·mL-1-300 U·mL-1, with the limit of detection at 0.82 U·mL-1, which makes it a promising candidate for an electrochemical immunosensor.

Abstract
This study investigated the abnormal pupillary light reflex in patients with early diabetes mellitus (DM) without retinopathy by using a custom-made noninvasive portable pupilometer. The pupilometer recorded and analyzed the pupillary light reflex. Two light intensities, 0.2 cd and 1.2 cd, and four wavelengths of stimulus light-white (400 nm-800 nm), red (640 ± 5 nm), green (534 ± 5 nm), and blue (470 ± 5 nm)-were used to stimulate the pupil for 10 ms. The pupillary response was recorded for 15 s. A total of 40 healthy people and 40 people with DM without retinopathy participated in the experiment at the National Taiwan University Hospital. The mean and standard deviation of DM duration were 4.5 years and 3.9 years. Of the 16 indices, the duration that pupil restores from its minimum size to half of its resting size (DRP), maximum pupil restoration velocity (MRV), and average restoration velocity (ARV) exhibited the most significant differences between the healthy people and those with DM. Compared with healthy participants, DRP was 16.33% higher, and MRV and ARV were 17.45% and 4.58% lower, respectively, in those with DM. This might be attributable to the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) controlling the dilator muscle during the dark-adapted period and relaxing the pupil; the SNS had few degenerated nerve endings in people with DM. The three aforementioned indices might be used to evaluate the severity of autonomic neuropathy in early DM.

Abstract
Patients with extensive-stage small cell lung cancer (ED-SCLC) have a very short survival time even if they receive standard cytotoxic chemotherapy with etoposide and platinum (EP). Several randomized controlled trials have shown that patients with ED-SCLC who received a combination of EP plus immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) had superior survival compared with those who received EP alone. We conducted a systematic review and network meta-analysis to provide a ranking of ICIs for our primary endpoints in terms of overall survival (OS), progression free survival (PFS), and objective response rate (ORR), as well as our secondary endpoint in terms of adverse events. The fractional polynomial model was used to evaluate the adjusted hazard ratios for the survival indicators (OS and PFS). Treatment rank was estimated using the surface under the cumulative ranking curve (SUCRA), as well as the probability of being best (Prbest) reference. EP plus nivolumab, atezolizumab or durvalumab had significant benefits compared with EP alone in terms of OS (Hazard Ratio HR = 0.67, 95% Confidence Interval CI = 0.46-0.98 for nivolumab, HR = 0.70, 95% CI = 0.54-0.91 for atezolizumab, HR = 0.73, 95% CI = 0.59-0.90 for durvalumab) but no significant differences were observed for pembrolizumab or ipilimumab. The probability of nivolumab being ranked first among all treatment arms was highest (SCURA = 78.7%, Prbest = 46.7%). All EP plus ICI combinations had a longer PFS compared with EP alone (HR = 0.65, 95% CI = 0.46-0.92 for nivolumab, HR = 0.77, 95% CI = 0.61-0.96 for atezolizumab, HR = 0.78, 95% CI = 0.65-0.94 for durvalumab, HR = 0.75, 95% CI = 0.61-0.92 for pembrolizumab), and nivolumab was ranked first in terms of PFS (SCURA = 85.0%, Prbest = 66.8%). In addition, nivolumab had the highest probability of grade 3-4 adverse events (SUCRA = 84.8%) in our study. We found that nivolumab had the best PFS and OS in all combinations of ICIs and EP, but nivolumab also had the highest probability of grade 3-4 adverse events in our network meta-analysis. Abstract
Zn-Co-S ball-in-ball hollow sphere (BHS) was successfully prepared by solvothermal sulfurization method. An efficient strategy to synthesize Zn-Co-S BHS consisted of multilevel structures by controlling the ionic exchange reaction was applied to obtain great performance electrode material. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as a conductive agent were uniformly introduced with Zn-Co-S BHS to form Zn-Co-S BHS/CNTs and expedited the considerable electrocatalytic behavior toward glucose electro-oxidation in alkaline medium. In this study, characterization with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) was used for investigating the morphological and physical/chemical properties and further evaluating the feasibility of Zn-Co-S BHS/CNTs in non-enzymatic glucose sensing. Electrochemical methods (cyclic voltammetry (CV) and chronoamperometry (CA)) were performed to investigate the glucose sensing performance of Zn-Co-S BHS/CNTs. The synergistic effect of Faradaic redox couple species of Zn-Co-S BHS and unique conductive network of CNTs exhibited excellent electrochemical catalytic ability towards the glucose electro-oxidation, which revealed linear range from 5 to 100 μM with high sensitivity of 2734.4 μA mM-1 cm-2, excellent detection limit of 2.98 μM, and great selectivity in the presence of dopamine, uric acid, ascorbic acid, and fructose. Thus, Zn-Co-S BHS/CNTs would be expected to be a promising material for non-enzymatic glucose sensing.

Abstract
AIM AND OBJECTIVES This study aimed to explore the effects of person-centred care on their job productivity, job satisfaction and organisational commitment among employees in long-term care facilities. BACKGROUND Person-centred care has been regarded as the best caregiving model for long-term care facilities. Few studies tested the impact of person-centred care on employee performance. DESIGN A cross-sectional study was employed. METHODS This study sent 373 samples with self-report questionnaires to the employees of sixteen long-term care facilities in Taiwan. A total of 366 valid samples were collected. A 33-item person-centred care questionnaire with Likert-scale responses was developed to assess the extent of person-centred care. We adopted hierarchical multiple regression analysis to test the impact of person-centred care on employee performance. We adopted the STROBE guidelines. RESULTS Friendly environment level and personalised care, respectively, scored the highest with a mean of 4.19 among five dimensions of person-centred care. Personalised care, residents' self-realisation and relationships, and organisational support had significant positive correlations with job productivity. Friendly environment level and organisational support had significant correlations with job satisfaction. Friendly environment level, residents' self-realisation and relationships, and organisational support had significant correlations with organisational commitment. CONCLUSION Person-centred care has beneficial impact on job satisfaction, job productivity and organisational commitment of employees in long-term care facilities. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE Person-centred care appears to be a crucial factor of employee performance in long-term care facilities. The five-dimensional person-centred care questionnaire in this study can serve as an important management tool for improving the effectiveness of person-centred care.

Abstract
Currently, the only effective therapy for cirrhosis of the liver is liver transplantation. However, finding a compatible liver is difficult due to the low supply of healthy livers and the ever-increasing demand. However, stem-cell therapy may offer a solution for liver cirrhosis; for example, GXHPC1 therapy preparation contains adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (AD-MSCs) and was developed for the treatment of liver cirrhosis. In our previous report, animal studies suggested that treatment of a diseased liver via GXHPC1 transplantation can abrogate liver fibrosis and facilitate recovery of liver function. In our current human trial, patients with liver cirrhosis were included. Their adipose tissue was harvested from the subcutaneous fat of the abdominal wall during surgery. AD-MSCs were cultured and suspended at a concentration of 100 million cells in 1 ml of physiological saline (i.e., GXHPC1). This human study passed the Taiwan Food and Drug Administration IND inspection and received Phase I clinical trial permission. The trial was conducted with six patients with liver cirrhosis to demonstrate the safety and efficacy of administering GXHPC1. Intrahepatic injection of GXHPC1 did not cause any safety issues in the analysis of adverse drug reactions and suspected unexpected serious adverse reactions, and showed a tendency for improvement of liver function, METAVIR score, Child–Pugh score, MELD score, and quality of life for patients with liver cirrhosis.

Abstract
Low response rate and recurrence are common issues in lung cancer; thus, identifying a potential compound for these patients is essential. Utilizing an in silico screening method, we identified withaferin A (WA), a cell-permeable steroidal lactone initially extracted from Withania somnifera, as a potential anti-lung cancer and anti-lung cancer stem-like cell (CSC) agent. First, we demonstrated that WA exhibited potent cytotoxicity in several lung cancer cells, as evidenced by low IC50 values. WA concurrently induced autophagy and apoptosis and the activation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which plays an upstream role in mediating WA-elicited effects. The increase in p62 indicated that WA may modulate the autophagy flux followed by apoptosis. In vivo research also demonstrated the anti-tumor effect of WA treatment. We subsequently demonstrated that WA could inhibit the growth of lung CSCs, decrease side population cells, and inhibit lung cancer spheroid-forming capacity, at least through downregulation of mTOR/STAT3 signaling. Furthermore, the combination of WA and chemotherapeutic drugs, including cisplatin and pemetrexed, exerted synergistic effects on the inhibition of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) wild-type lung cancer cell viability. In addition, WA can further enhance the cytotoxic effect of cisplatin in lung CSCs. Therefore, WA alone or in combination with standard chemotherapy is a potential treatment option for EGFR wild-type lung cancer and may decrease the occurrence of cisplatin resistance by inhibiting lung CSCs.

Abstract
Maternal separation (MS) has been developed as a model for inducing stress and depression in studies using rodents. The concept of the gut-brain axis suggests that gut health is essential for brain health. Here, we present the effects of administration of a probiotic, Lactobacillus paracasei PS23 (PS23), to MS mice against psychological traits including anxiety and depression. The administration of live and heat-killed PS23 cells showed positive behavioural effects on MS animals, where exploratory tendencies and mobility were increased in behavioural tests, indicating reduced anxiety and depression compared to the negative control mice (P<0.05). Mice administered with both live and heat-killed PS23 cells also showed lower serum corticosterone levels accompanied by higher serum anti-inflammatory interleukin 10 (IL-10) levels, compared to MS separated mice (P<0.05), indicating a stress-elicited response affiliated with increased immunomodulatory properties. Assessment of neurotransmitters in the brain hippocampal region revealed that PS23 affected the concentrations of dopaminergic metabolites differently than the control, suggesting that PS23 may have improved MS-induced stress levels via neurotransmitter pathways, such as dopamine or other mechanisms not addressed in the current study. Our study illustrates the potential of a probiotic in reversing abnormalities induced by early life stress and could be an alternative for brain health along the gut-brain axis.

Abstract
A pre-metastatic niche (PMN) facilitates cancer metastasis through mobilization and recruitment of bone marrow-derived cells (BMDCs) and associated factors. In bone marrow, hematogenous cells, including osteoclasts, macrophages and lymphocytes, and mesenchymal cells, including mesenchymal stem cells, osteoblasts and adipocytes, are involved in PMN formation. Patients with lung cancer and metastasis have a poor prognosis and shortened median survival time. Bone marrow has been considered fertile ground for dormant and proliferating tumor cells, and mobilizing and recruiting BMDCs and immune cells can establish a PMN. However, the role of BMDCs in PMN formation is not yet fully understood. The present study aimed to investigate the association between BMDCs and PMN in bone marrow tissue samples. The results demonstrated that bone marrow served an important role in lung cancer progression and that eight pathways were potentially involved, including ‘T-cell receptor signaling pathway’, ‘osteoclast differentiation’, ‘MAPK signaling pathway’, ‘VEGF signaling pathway’, ‘leukocyte transendothelial migration’, ‘signaling pathways regulating the pluripotency of stem cells’, ‘oxytocin signaling pathway’ and ‘cell adhesion molecules (CAMs)’. In addition, the present study investigated the role of BMDCs in facilitating lung cancer metastasis. In conclusion, the results from the present study suggested that molecular alterations in gene expression may provide a novel signature in lung cancer, which may aid in the development of novel diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for patients with lung cancer and bone metastasis.

Abstract
The association between sleep apnea (SA) and peripheral artery disease (PAD) remains debatable, and there is no clinical tool to predict incident PAD in SA patients. The CHADS2 score has been found useful in predicting PAD risk. This study was designed to investigate the association between these diseases and the usefulness of CHADS2 and CHA2DS2ASc scores in predicting subsequent PAD in SA patients. From a population-based database of one-million representative subjects, adult patients with SA diagnosis were enrolled as the suspected SA group, and those having SA diagnosis after polysomnography were further extracted as the probable SA group. Twenty sex- and age-matched control subjects were randomly selected for each SA patients. The occurrence of PAD after SA was taken as the primary endpoint. Totally, 10,702 and 4242 patients were enrolled in the suspected and probable SA groups, respectively. The cumulative incidence of PAD was similar between SA patients and the corresponding control groups. Multivariable Cox regression analyses showed that SA was not an independent risk factor for subsequent PAD. Sensitivity analyses using propensity score-matched cohorts showed consistent results. Furthermore, in stratifying the SA patients by CHADS2, CHA2DS2ASc, or a newly-proposed ABCD (composed of Age, high Blood pressure, Cerebral vascular disease, and Diabetes mellitus) score, patients with higher scores predicted higher risks of subsequent PAD, while the ABCD score appeared to be the most robust. Aggressive risk modification is suggested to reduce the subsequent PAD risk in SA patients with a higher CHADS2, CHA2DS2ASc, or ABCD score.

Abstract
Asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are chronic airway inflammatory diseases that share some common features, although these diseases are somewhat different in etiologies, clinical features, and treatment policies. The aim of this study is to investigate the common microRNA-mediated changes in bronchial epithelial cells of asthma and COPD. The microRNA profiles in primary bronchial epithelial cells from asthma (AHBE) and COPD (CHBE) patients and healthy subjects (NHBE) were analyzed with next-generation sequencing (NGS) and the significant microRNA changes common in AHBE and CHBE were extracted. The upregulation of hsa-miR-10a-5p and hsa-miR-146a-5p in both AHBE and CHBE was confirmed with quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). Using bioinformatic methods, we further identified putative targets of these microRNAs, which were downregulated in both AHBE and CHBE: miR-10a-5p might suppress BCL2, FGFR3, FOXO3, PDE4A, PDE4C, and PDE7A; miR-146a-5p might suppress BCL2, INSR, PDE4D, PDE7A, PDE7B, and PDE11A. We further validated significantly decreased expression levels of FOXO3 and PDE7A in AHBE and CHBE than in NHBE with qPCR. Increased serum miR-146a-5p level was also noted in patients with asthma and COPD as compared with normal control subjects. In summary, our study revealed possible mechanisms mediated by miR-10a-5p and miR-146a-5p in the pathogenesis of both asthma and COPD. The findings might provide a scientific basis for developing novel diagnostic and therapeutic strategies.

Abstract
Background Afatinib is a second-generation epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI). Compared to cytotoxic chemotherapy, afatinib has been shown to have better efficacy in the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer harboring EGFR mutations. However, 40 mg daily as the initial dose is often accompanied by serious adverse drug reactions (ADRs) and 28 to 53.3% of patients required a dose reduction. No previous study has compared the clinical efficacy and ADRs of different initial doses (40 mg vs. 30 mg daily) of afatinib in lung cancer treatment. Methods Patients with stage IV lung adenocarcinoma diagnosed and treated in two Kaohsiung Medical University-affiliated hospitals in Taiwan between May 2014 and August 2016 were identified and followed until December 2016. Demographic characteristics, responses, progression-free survival (PFS), overall survival (OS), and ADRs were recorded. Result A total of 48 patients with stage IV lung adenocarcinoma harboring susceptible EGFR mutations who received afatinib as their first-line therapy were enrolled. Patients using 30 mg daily as the initial dose tended to be older and female and have a smaller body size. The patients using 30 mg of afatinib daily as their initial dose had a similar response rate to those receiving 40 mg daily (76% vs. 95%, p = 0.0862) and the same disease control rate (100% vs. 100%, p = 0.1486). The PFS was similar between the patients receiving 30 mg or 40 mg of afatinib daily (median PFS: 469 vs. 443 days, log-rank p = 0.8418). Patients receiving 30 mg daily had a significantly lower incidence of diarrhea than those using 40 mg daily (41% vs. 100%, p < 0.0001). Conclusion An initial afatinib dose of 30 mg daily had similar response and progression-free survival rates as an initial dose of 40 mg daily, but resulted in fewer serious ADRs in this study.

Abstract
Cytokine signaling is responsible for coordinating conserved epithelial regeneration and immune responses in the digestive tract. In the Drosophila midgut, Upd3 is a major cytokine, which is induced in enterocytes (EC) and enteroblasts (EB) upon oral infection, and initiates intestinal stem cell (ISC) dependent tissue repair. To date, the genetic network directing upd3 transcription remains largely uncharacterized. Here, we have identified the key infection-responsive enhancers of the upd3 gene and show that distinct enhancers respond to various stresses. Furthermore, through functional genetic screening, bioinformatic analyses and yeast one-hybrid screening, we determined that the transcription factors Scalloped (Sd), Mothers against dpp (Mad), and D-Fos are principal regulators of upd3 expression. Our study demonstrates that upd3 transcription in the gut is regulated by the activation of multiple pathways, including the Hippo, TGF-β/Dpp, and Src, as well as p38-dependent MAPK pathways. Thus, these essential pathways, which are known to control ISC proliferation cell-autonomously, are also activated in ECs to promote tissue turnover the regulation of upd3 transcription. Tissue regeneration is a fundamental process that maintains the integrity of the intestinal epithelium when faced with chemical or microbial stresses. In both healthy and diseased conditions, pro-regenerative cytokines function as central coordinators of gut renewal, linking inflammation to stem cell activity. In Drosophila, the upstream events that stimulate the production of the primary cytokine Unpaired 3 (Upd3) in response to indigenous or pathogenic microbes have yet to be elucidated. In this study, we demonstrate that upd3 expression is driven in different cell types by separate microbe-responsive enhancers. In enterocytes (ECs), cytokine induction relies on the Yki/Sd, Mad/Med, and AP-1 transcription factors (TFs). These TF complexes are activated downstream of the Hippo, TGF-β and Src-MAPK pathways, respectively. Inhibiting these pathways in ECs impairs upd3 transcription, which in turn blocks intestinal stem cell proliferation and reduces the survival rate of adult flies following enteric infections. Altogether, our study identifies the major microbe-responsive enhancers of the upd3 gene and sheds light on the complexity of the gene regulatory network required in ECs to regulate tissue homeostasis and stem cell activity in the digestive tract.

Abstract
Background The objective of this study was to appraise the prognostic role of initial pan-endoscopic tumor length at diagnosis within or between operable esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) undergoing upfront esophagectomy or neoadjuvant concurrent chemoradiotherapy (nCCRT) followed by esophagectomy. Methods Between Jan 2001 and Dec 2013 in Koo-Foundation Sun Yat-sen Cancer Center in Taiwan, 101 ESCC patients who underwent upfront esophagectomy (surgery group) and 128 nCCRT followed by esophagectomy (nCCRT-surgery group) were retrospectively collected. Prognostic variables, including initial pan-endoscopic tumor length at diagnosis (sub-grouped ≤3, 3-5 and >5 cm), status of circumferential resection margin (CRM), and pathological T/N/M-status and cancer stage, were appraised within or between surgery and nCCRT-surgery groups. Results Within surgery group, longer initial pan-endoscopic tumor length at diagnosis (≤3, 3-5 and >5 cm; HR =1.000, 1.688 and 4.165; P=0.007) was an independent prognostic factor that correlated with advanced T/N/M-status, late cancer stage, and CRM invasion (all's P<0.001). Based on the initial pan-endoscopic tumor length at diagnosis ≤3, 3-5 and >5 cm, nCCRT-surgery group had a poorer (P=0.039), similar (P=0.447) and better (P<0.001) survivals than did surgery group, respectively. For those with initial pan-endoscopic tumor length at diagnosis >5 cm, nCCRT-surgery group had more percentage of T0/N0-status and stage 0 (all's P<0.05), and fewer rate of CRM invasion (P=0.036) than did surgery group. Conclusions Initial pan-endoscopic tumor length at diagnosis could be a criterion to select proper ESCC cases for nCCRT followed by esophagectomy to improve survival and reduce CRM invasion.

Abstract
The neurology of male sexuality has been poorly studied owing to difficulties in studying brain circuitry in humans. Dopamine (DA) is essential for both physiological and behavioural responses, including the regulation of sexuality. Previous studies have revealed that alterations in DA synthesis in dopaminergic neurons can induce male-male courtship behaviour, while increasing DA levels in the protocerebral posteriolateral dopaminergic cluster neuron 2ab (PPL2ab) may enhance the intensity of male courtship sustainment in Drosophila. Here we report that changes in the ability of the PPL2ab in the central nervous system (CNS) to produce DA strongly impact male-male courtship in D. melanogaster. Intriguingly, the DA-synthesizing abilities of these neurons appear to affect both the courting activities displayed by male flies and the sex appeal of male flies for other male flies. Moreover, the observed male-male courtship is triggered primarily by target motion, yet chemical cues can replace visual input under dark conditions. This is interesting evidence that courtship responses in male individuals are controlled by PPL2ab neurons in the CNS. Our study provides insight for subsequent studies focusing on sexual circuit modulation by PPL2ab neurons.

Abstract
To maintain a particular cell fate, a unique set of genes should be expressed while another set is repressed. One way to repress gene expression is through Polycomb group (PcG) proteins that compact chromatin into a silent configuration. In addition to cell fate maintenance, PcG proteins also maintain normal cell physiology, for example cell cycle. In the absence of PcG, ectopic activation of the PcG-repressed genes leads to developmental defects and malignant tumors. Little is known about the molecular nature of ectopic gene expression; especially what differentiates expression of a given gene in the orthotopic tissue (orthotopic expression) and the ectopic expression of the same gene due to PcG mutations. Here we present that ectopic gene expression in PcG mutant cells specifically requires dBRWD3, a negative regulator of HIRA/Yemanuclein (YEM)-mediated histone variant H3.3 deposition. dBRWD3 mutations suppress both the ectopic gene expression and aberrant tissue overgrowth in PcG mutants through a YEM-dependent mechanism. Our findings identified dBRWD3 as a critical regulator that is uniquely required for ectopic gene expression and aberrant tissue overgrowth caused by PcG mutations. Genetic information is stored in our genomic DNA, and different cells retrieve distinct sets of information from our genome. While it is important to activate genomic regions encoding proteins that are essential for a given cell type, it is equally important to silence genomic regions encoding proteins that are potentially harmful to this type of cells. One of the gene silencing mechanisms frequently used during and after development is mediated by the Polycomb group (PcG) proteins. If this guardian function does not perform correctly due to PcG mutations, genes that are normally silenced—such as oncogenes—are expressed aberrantly. Due to the activation of oncogenes and the loss of other PcG functions, PcG mutant cells often begin to display hallmarks of cancer, such as proliferating beyond control, acquiring stem-cell-like properties, and migrating to distant sites. If the transcriptional mechanisms underlying aberrant gene expression in PcG-mutant cancer cells differ from gene expression in normal cells, we may be able to selectively inhibit the growth of cancer cells without affecting their normal counterparts. Here we show that the difference between these two types of gene expression resides in their sensitivity to dBRWD3, a negative regulator of the deposition of histone H3 variant H3.3. Our results indicate that the inactivation of dBRWD3 or promotion of H3.3 deposition may selectively suppress ectopic gene expression and tumorigenesis driven by mutations in PcG.

Abstract
Electrochemical and in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) measurements of various MnO2-coated carbon materials (MnO2/acid-functionalized carbon nanotubes (C-CNT), MnO2/reduced graphene oxide (RGO), and MnO2/RGO-Au electrodes) were conducted to evaluate the supercapacitive performances and electronic structures. MnO2 was deposited on the surface of C-CNT, RGO, and RGO-Au via a spontaneous redox reaction to facilitate the growth of the bulk form of MnO2/C-CNT and the surface forms of MnO2/RGO-based materials. Various forms of MnO2 on the carbon materials exhibited different charge/discharge behaviors. The specific capacitances of the MnO2/RGO and MnO2/RGO-Au electrodes at a current density of 1 A g(-1) were about 433 and 469 F g(-1), respectively; these values are about 1.5 times that of the MnO2/C-CNT (259 F g(-1)) electrode. Specific capacitances of 220 and 281 F g(-1) with retention rates of about 50-60% were obtained from MnO2/RGO and MnO2/RGO-Au, respectively, even at a high current density of 80 A g(-1). Experimental results revealed that the long-term electrochemical stability of the MnO2/RGO-based electrodes (with ∼90% retention) exceeded that of the MnO2/C-CNT electrode (with ∼60% retention) after 1000 cycles at a high scan rate of 80 A g(-1). This finding indicates that MnO2/RGO-based electrodes feature excellent cycling stability and rate capacity retention performance. To elucidate the atomic/electronic structures of the MnO2/C-CNT, MnO2/RGO, and MnO2/RGO-Au electrodes during the charge/discharge process, in situ XAS of the Mn K-edge was performed. The MnO2/RGO-based electrodes exhibited the least variations in the pre-peak intensity of the Mn K-edge during the charge/discharge process because a nano-network of MnO2 is homogeneously decorated on the outer surfaces of RGO-based electrodes to facilitate the growth of surface forms of MnO2/RGO and MnO2/RGO-Au. Analytical results further revealed suppression of changes in tunnel size and promotion of insertion/extraction behavior. This work, particularly the combination of cyclic voltammetry with in situ XAS measurements, will be of general value in the fields of nanomaterials and nanotechnology, and in their use in energy storage.

Abstract
Cancer stem cell (CSC) theory has drawn much attention, with evidence supporting the contribution of stem cells to tumor initiation, relapse, and therapy resistance. In this study, we focus on screening drugs that target CSCs to improve the current treatment outcome and overcome drug resistance in patients with lung cancer. We used publicly available embryonic stem cell and CSC-associated gene signatures to query the Connectivity Map (CMap) for potential drugs that can, at least in part, reverse the gene expression profile of CSCs. High scores were noted for several phenothiazine-like antipsychotic drugs, including trifluoperazine and perphenazine. The combination of gemcitabine with either trifluoperazine or perphenazine shows synergistic effects in anti-NSCLC cells. By using L1000 and CMap analysis, we identified withaferin A (WA) as a potential drug, which shares similar gene expression patterns to trifluoperazine or perphenazine combine with gemcitabine and to reverse differential gene expression of stem-like cell vs. differential cell. Further experiments demonstrated that WA significantly suppressed cancer stemness associated phenotypes, shown by decreasing side population and tumor spheroid formation. Furthermore, WA was accompanied by down-regulation of JAK2/STAT3 signaling pathway. The combination of WA and cisplatin significantly reduced the number of cancer spheroids and attenuated the proportion of ALDH+ cell population in CL97 lung spheroids, which was resistant to cisplatin treatment alone. In vivo study also demonstrated the anti-tumor effect of WA treatment. In conclusion, WA was identified as a potential anti-cancer stem cell inhibitor, which could also inhibit tumorigenesis and overcome cisplatin resistance in lung cancer.

Abstract
The efficacy of Lactobacillus paracasei V0151 (V0151), isolated from the faeces of a child, to modulate immune responses was investigated. In RAW 264.7 cells expressing an inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS)-directed luciferase gene, heat-inactivated V0151 stimulated iNOS expression followed by nitric oxide production. V0151 significantly elevated interferon gamma, interleukin (IL)-10, tumour necrosis factor alpha, and IL-1β production in human peripheral blood mononuclear cells. In splenocytes isolated from ovalbumin (OVA)-sensitised BALB/c mice treated with OVA and V0151 at different bacterium-to-cell ratios (1:1, 10:1, and 20:1) for 96 h, IL-2, IL-4, IL-5, and IL-13 production was dose-dependently downregulated, whereas IL-12 was dose-dependently upregulated. Collectively, our findings indicate that V0151 might regulate pro-inflammatory factors in macrophages and splenocytes. Furthermore, the T helper 1/T helper 2 (Th1/Th2) balance was also skewed toward Th1 dominance through the elevation of Th1 cytokine production.

Abstract
Organ formation requires a delicate balance of positive and negative regulators. In Drosophila eye development, wingless (wg) is expressed at the lateral margins of the eye disc and serves to block retinal development. The T-box gene optomotor-blind (omb) is expressed in a similar pattern and is regulated by Wg. Omb mediates part of Wg activity in blocking eye development. Omb exerts its function primarily by blocking cell proliferation. These effects occur predominantly in the ventral margin. Our results suggest that the primary effect of Omb is the blocking of Jak/STAT signaling by repressing transcription of upd which encodes the Jak receptor ligand Unpaired.

Abstract
The surfaces of acid- and amine-functionalized carbon nanotubes (C-CNT and N-CNT) were decorated with MnO2 nanoflakes as supercapacitors by a spontaneous redox reaction. C-CNT was found to have a lower edge plane structure and fewer defect sites than N-CNT. MnO2/C-CNT with a highly developed surface area exhibited favorable electrochemical performance. To determine the atomic/electronic structures of the MnO2/functionalized CNTs (MnO2/C-CNT and MnO/N-CNT) during the charge/discharge process, in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) measurements were made at the Mn K-edge. Both C-CNT and N-CNT are highly conductive. The effect of the scan rate on the capacitance behavior was also examined, revealing that the π* state of CNT and the size of the tunnels in pseudo-capacitor materials (which facilitate conduction and the transport of electrolyte ions) are critical for the capacitive performance, and their role depends on the scan rate. In the slow charge/discharge process, MnO2/N-CNT has a more symmetrical rectangular cyclic voltammetry (CV) curve. In the fast charge/discharge process, MnO2/C-CNT with a highly developed surface provides fast electronic and ionic channels that support a reversible faradaic redox reaction between MnO2 nanoflakes and the electrolyte, significantly enhancing its capacitive performance over that of MnO2/N-CNT. The MnO2/C-CNT architecture has great potential for supercapacitor applications. The information that was obtained herein helps to elucidate CNT surface modification and the design of the MnO2/functionalized CNT interface with a view for the further development of supercapacitors. This work, and especially the combination of CV with in situ XAS measurements, will be of value to readers with an interest in nanomaterial, nanotechnology and their applications in energy storage.

Abstract
Mice lacking functional neurokinin-1 receptors (NK1R-/-) display abnormal behaviours seen in Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (hyperactivity, impulsivity and inattentiveness). These abnormalities were evident when comparing the behaviour of separate (inbred: 'Hom') wildtype and NK1R-/- mouse strains. Here, we investigated whether the inbreeding protocol could influence their phenotype by comparing the behaviour of these mice with that of wildtype (NK1R+/+) and NK1R-/- progeny of heterozygous parents ('Het', derived from the same inbred strains). First, we recorded the spontaneous motor activity of the two colonies/genotypes, over 7 days. This continuous monitoring also enabled us to investigate whether the diurnal rhythm in motor activity differs in the two colonies/genotypes. NK1R-/- mice from both colonies were hyperactive compared with their wildtypes and their diurnal rhythm was also disrupted. Next, we evaluated the performance of the four groups of mice in the 5-Choice Serial Reaction-Time Task (5-CSRTT). During training, NK1R-/- mice from both colonies expressed more impulsive and perseverative behaviour than their wildtypes. During testing, only NK1R-/- mice from the Hom colony were more impulsive than their wildtypes, but NK1R-/- mice from both colonies were more perseverative. There were no colony differences in inattentiveness. Moreover, a genotype difference in this measure depended on time of day. We conclude that the hyperactivity, perseveration and, possibly, inattentiveness of NK1R-/- mice is a direct consequence of a lack of functional NK1R. However, the greater impulsivity of NK1R-/- mice depended on an interaction between a functional deficit of NK1R and other (possibly environmental and/or epigenetic) factors.
