Abstract
Owing to excellent catalytic activity, single-atom catalysts (SACs) have recently attracted considerable research interest in the electrochemiluminescence (ECL) field. However, the applications of SACs are mostly limited to conventional luminol ECL system. Hence, it is necessary to explore the application of SACs in more ECL systems. In this work, nickel single-atom catalysts (Ni SACs) were successfully applied in the graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4)-H2O2 ECL system to significantly enhance its cathodic emission. Notably, g-C3N4 acted not only as an ECL luminophore but also as a support to anchor Ni SACs. Ni SACs can significantly activate H2O2 to produce abundant OH• radicals for enhancing the cathodic ECL emission of g-C3N4. Ni SACs-anchored g-C3N4 (Ni SACs@g-C3N4) had a 10-fold enhanced ECL intensity as compared to g-C3N4. Finally, the Ni SACs@g-C3N4-H2O2 ECL system was developed to detect hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA by incorporating an entropy-driven DNA walking machine-assisted CRISPR-Cas12a amplification strategy. The constructed biosensor exhibited excellent detection performance for HBV DNA with a limit of detection as low as 17 aM. This work puts forward a new idea for enhancing the cathodic ECL of g-C3N4-H2O2 and expands the application of SACs in the ECL system.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Circular RNA (circRNA) has been reported to regulate respiratory diseases. In the study, we aimed to elucidate the role of circ_0000157 in smoke-related chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and the inner mechanism. METHODS COPD-like cell injury was induced by treating human bronchial epithelioid cells (16HBE) with cigarette smoke extract (CSE). The expression of circ_0000157, miR-149-5p, bromodomain containing 4 (BRD4), BCL2-associated x protein (Bax) and B-cell lymphoma-2 (Bcl-2) was analyzed by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) or Western blotting. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was performed to detect interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) levels. Malondialdehyde (MDA) production was detected by a lipid peroxidation MDA assay kit. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity was analyzed by a SOD activity assay kit. RESULTS Circ_0000157 and BRD4 expression were upregulated, while miR-149-5p expression was downregulated in the blood of smokers with COPD and CSE-induced 16HBE cells compared with control groups. CSE treatment inhibited 16HBE cell proliferation and induced cell apoptosis, inflammation, and oxidative stress; however, these effects were remitted when circ_0000157 expression was decreased. In addition, circ_0000157 acted as a miR-149-5p sponge and regulated CSE-caused 16HBE cell damage by targeting miR-149-5p. The overexpression of BRD4, a target gene of miR-149-5p, attenuated the inhibitory effects of miR-149-5p introduction on CSE-induced cell damage. Further, circ_0000157 modulated BRD4 expression by associating with miR-149-5p in CSE-treated 16HBE cells. CONCLUSION Circ_0000157 knockdown ameliorated CSE-caused 16HBE cell damage by targeting the miR-149-5p/BRD4 pathway, providing a potential therapeutic strategy for clinic intervention in COPD.

Abstract
Stomach adenocarcinoma (STAD) is one of the most malignant cancers that endanger human health. There is growing evidence that competitive endogenous RNA (ceRNA) regulatory networks play an important role in various human tumors. However, the complexity and behavioral characteristics of the ceRNA network in STAD are still unclear. In this study, we constructed a ceRNA regulatory network to identify the potential prognostic biomarkers associated with STAD. The expression profile of lncRNA, miRNA, and mRNA was downloaded from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). After performing bioinformatics analysis, the CCDC144NL-AS1/hsa-miR-145-5p/SERPINE1 ceRNA network associated to STAD prognosis of STAD was obtained. The CCDC144NL-AS1/SERPINE1 axis in the ceRNA network was identified by correlation analysis and considered as a clinical prognosis model by Cox regression analysis. In addition, methylation analysis indicated that the abnormal upregulation of CCDC144NL-AS1/SERPINE1 axis might be related to the aberrant methylation of some sites, and immune infiltration analysis suggested that CCDC144NL-AS1/SERPINE1 axis probably influences the alteration of tumor immune microenvironment and the occurrence and development of STAD. In particular, the CCDC144NL-AS1/SERPINE1 axis based on the ceRNA network constructed in the present study might be an important novel factor correlating with the diagnosis and prognosis of STAD.

Abstract
Background: As non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) seriously threatens human health, several clinical studies have reported that Chinese herbal injections (CHIs) combined with vinorelbine and cisplatin (NP) are beneficial. This multidimensional network meta-analysis was performed to explore the preferable options among different CHIs for treating NSCLC. Methods: A literature search was performed in several databases to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of CHIs in the treatment of NSCLC from inception to January 31, 2019. Final included studies met the eligibility criteria and methodological quality recommendations. Data analysis was performed using Stata 13.0 and WinBUGS 14.0 software. Each outcome was presented as an odds ratio and the surface under the cumulative ranking curve value (SCURA). The “scatterplot3d” package in R 3.6.1 software was used to perform multidimensional cluster analysis. Results: Ultimately, 97 eligible RCTs involving 7,440 patients and 14 CHIs were included in this network meta-analysis. Combined with NP chemotherapy, Kanglaite injection plus NP exhibited a better impact on the clinical effectiveness rate (SCURA probability: 78.34%), and Javanica oil emulsion injection plus NP was better in the performance status (95.44%). Huachansu injection plus NP was dominant in reducing thrombocytopenia (92.67%) and gastrointestinal reactions (92.52%). As to multidimensional cluster analysis, Shenmai injection plus NP was superior considering improving the clinical effectiveness rate, performance status and relieving leukopenia. Conclusions: The combination of CHIs and NP has a better impact on patients with NSCLC than NP alone. Among them, Shenmai injection plus NP, Kanglaite injection plus NP and Javanica oil emulsion injection plus NP were notable. Nevertheless, more multicenter and better designed RCTs are needed to validate our findings.

Abstract
Abstract
Introduction
Recurrent thromboembolism is a major risk factor for chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH). Antiphospholipid antibodies (aPL) are a recognized risk factor for recurrent thromboembolism, however, their contribution to the development of CTEPH is currently unknown.
Purpose
The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of antiphospholipid autoantibodies in a large cohort of consecutive patients with CTEPH.
Methods
Starting May 2013 to December 2018, 297 CTEPHpatients were consecutively enrolled. Diagnosis was confirmed with standardized right heart catheterization, 2D or/and 3D pulmonary angiography in all patients.All patients were also screened for thrombophilia including lupus anticoagulant IgG/IgM anticardiolipin antibodies and IgG/IgM aβ2GPI antibodies. Clinical and demographic characteristics, laboratory profile and hemodynamic data were compared between patients with aPL positive and aPL negative laboratory profiles.
Results
Overall, 297 consecutive patients with CTEPH were assessed for aPLs. Of these, 23 patients (7.7%) resulted positive for laboratory tests exploring aPL. Among patients with positive aPL, profile 17 (74%) were positive for all three test exploring aPL (LA+, aCL+, aB2GPI+). When compared to CTEPH patients without aPL test positivity, those positive for aPL were significantly younger (30.0 vs 55.6 years, p<0.0001), had a positive history of pulmonary embolism (95.6% vs 65.7%, p=0.003), deep venous thrombosis (78.3% vs 41.9%, p=0.0008) and were more frequently affected by other autoimmune diseases (43.5% vs 2.9%, p<0.0001). Moreover, positive aPL patients showed better hemodynamics on right heart catheterization, had more proximal lesions, and had more frequently level I and II surgical classification (82.6% vs 40.5%, p=0.0002) on pulmonary angiography.
Conclusions
These findings suggest that young patients with pulmonary embolism should be assessed for aPLs to guide anticoagulation therapy and prevent recurrences. Additionally, younger age, more proximal lesions and less severe hemodynamic profiles make majority patients with APS good candidates for PEA surgery.

OBJECTIVE To assess the clinical efficacy and safety of ginkgo injections (GIs) combined with conventional treatment (CT) against angina pectoris (AP) due to coronary heart disease (CHD). METHODS Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that used GIs to treat AP were searched in SinoMed, PubMed, China National Knowledge Infrastructure Database, Chinese Scientific Journals Database, Wanfang Database, Embase and Cochrane Library until March 2017. The Cochrane"risk of bias"method was used to evaluate the methodological quality of RCTs. Data were analyzed using Stata v13.1 and WinBUGS v1.4.3. RESULTS A total of 73 RCTs involving 7621 patients were included. A Bayesian network Meta-analysis of RCTs was undertaken, and the advantages of four types of GI-supplemented CT in AP treatment were determined. CONCLUSION GI-assisted CT was more effective against AP than CT alone. However, based on the limitations of the study, additional high-quality RCTs are required to confirm our findings.

Abstract
Recently, the problem of indoor particulate matter pollution has received much attention. An increasing number of epidemiological studies show that the concentration of atmospheric particulate matter has a significant effect on human health, even at very low concentrations. Most of these investigations have relied upon outdoor particle concentrations as surrogates of human exposures. However, considering that the concentration distribution of the indoor particulate matter is largely dependent on the extent to which these particles penetrate the building and on the degree of suspension in the indoor air, human exposures to particles of outdoor origin may not be equal to outdoor particle concentration levels. Therefore, it is critical to understand the relationship between the particle concentrations found outdoors and those found in indoor micro-environments. In this study, experiments were conducted using a naturally ventilated office located in Qingdao, China. The indoor and outdoor particle concentrations were measured at the same time using an optical counter with four size ranges. The particle size distribution ranged from 0.3 to 2.5 μm, and the experimental period was from April to September, 2016. Based on the experimental data, the dynamic and mass balance model based on time was used to estimate the penetration rate and deposition rate at air exchange rates of 0.03-0.25 h-1. The values of the penetration rate and deposition velocity of indoor particles were determined to range from 0.45 to 0.82 h-1 and 1.71 to 2.82 m/h, respectively. In addition, the particulate pollution exposure in the indoor environment was analyzed to estimate the exposure hazard from indoor particulate matter pollution, which is important for human exposure to particles and associated health effects. The conclusions from this study can serve to provide a better understanding the dynamics and behaviors of airborne particle entering into buildings. And they will also highlight effective methods to reduce exposure to particles in office buildings.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the effect of an SGLT-2 inhibitor on diabetic nephropathy and serum oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL) levels. PATIENTS AND METHODS We randomly divided 126 patients with diabetic nephropathy into the treatment group and control group. The 63 patients in the treatment group received an SGLT-2 inhibitor in addition to routine insulin therapy, while the control group received only insulin to control blood glucose. All laboratory indexes were recorded before and after treatment with the SGLT-2 inhibitor. The prognosis of patients was followed-up. Simultaneously, 63 healthy and BMI-matched in-patients were selected as the healthy control group. Peripheral blood samples were collected from all groups, and the levels of ROS were measured by ELISA. RESULTS Renal function indexes such as urinary protein, creatinine, blood urea nitrogen, and glomerular filtration rate (GFR) were significantly higher with SGLT-2 inhibitor treatment compared with the control group (p<0.05). The fasting blood glucose level was not significantly increased before or after treatment (p>0.05). The levels of ROS in peripheral blood were significantly lower in the treatment group than in the control group (p<0.05). Observation at the 1-year follow-up showed that the average GFR was significantly higher in the treatment group than in the control group. Furthermore, the proportion of patients with stage 1-3 chronic kidney disease was significantly higher in the treatment group than in the control group (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS The SGLT-2 inhibitor had a good therapeutic effect on renal function in patients with diabetic nephropathy, without having effects on fasting blood glucose. Additionally, it significantly delayed the progression of nephropathy. It is therefore worth clinical promotion.

Abstract
Background Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) is widely applied for the treatment of severe aortic stenosis (AS) in developed countries; however, in China, it is still in the early stage of utilization. On the basis of previous studies, this work explored the feasibility of TAVR in patients with severe AS in China and analyzed the cause of death in four cases. Methods This retrospective study included 20 patients who had severe AS and underwent TAVR with a balloon-expandable system (Edwards SAPIEN XT) in our hospital from January 2011 to June 2016. The valve and heart functions of 16 survivors before and after the TAVR procedure were compared. TAVR endpoints, device success, and adverse events were assessed according to the definitions of the Valve Academic Research Consortium-2 (VARC-2). Results There were 13 male and seven female patients aged 65–81 years (average, 73.15) who underwent TAVR. The TAVR approach was transfemoral in 19 patients and transapical in one patient. Four patients died (two of coronary artery occlusion and two of aortic annulus rupture) during the TAVR procedure or shortly after; six patients had mild paravalvular leakage, and the rest of the patients showed a significant improvement in cardiac function. During the follow-up period (2–62 months), one patient died of lung cancer 13 months after the TAVR procedure. Conclusion TAVR with a balloon-expandable system is safe and effective and can be used for patients with severe AS in China. It requires careful patient selection and preoperative assessment so as to reduce the 30-day postoperative mortality rate.

Abstract
Animal brucellosis is a re-emerging disease in China with high prevalence in the northwest region. A total of 66 isolates of Brucella were recovered from sheep and yaks in the Inner Mongolia, Xinjiang, Qinghai and Gansu provinces of northwest China in 2015 and 2016. Using classical biotyping and the Brucella AMOS PCR assay, all isolates were identified as Brucella melitensis biovar 3 (n = 58), B. melitensis biovar 1 (n = 1), Brucella abortus (n = 5), or Brucella suis biovar 3 (n = 2), and B. melitensis biovar 3 was found to be mainly responsible for sheep brucellosis in northwest China. Multilocus variable-number tandem-repeat analysis (MLVA) was used to identify the epidemiological relationships among the isolates and to assess their genetic diversity. Multilocus variable-number tandem-repeat analysis-16 identified 46 genotypes in these populations, including 37 unique and nine shared genotypes. Multilocus variable-number tandem-repeat analysis-11 showed that 71% of the isolates (47 of 66) were genotype 116 (1-5-3-13-2-2-3-2-4-41-8), a characteristic subgroup of the East Mediterranean group, showing that isolates from different geographical areas exhibit similar epidemiological characteristics in different regions and may be epidemiologically linked. Multilocus variable-number tandem-repeat analysis-11 also revealed that an isolate from Inner Mongolia had a novel genotype, 369 (1-5-3-13-2-2-3-2-7-41-8). Multilocus variable-number tandem-repeat analysis-16 genotyping of northwest China Brucella isolates allows a better understanding of the epidemiology of animal brucellosis in this region. This study is the first analysis of B. melitensis in Gansu province, and the results confirmed that in this province, isolates of this species are disorderly and unsystematic.

Abstract
Group A rotaviruses (RVAs) are a major cause of serious intestinal disease in piglets. In this study, a novel pig strain was identified in a stool sample from China. The strain was designated RVA/Pig/China/LNCY/2016/G3P[13] and had a G3-P[13]-I5-R1-C1-M1-A8-N1-T1-E1-H1 genome. The viral protein 7 (VP7) and non-structural protein 4 (NSP4) genes of RVA/Pig/China/LNCY/2016/G3P[13] were closely related to cogent genes of human RVAs, suggesting that a reassortment between pig and human strains had occurred. Recombination analysis showed that RVA/Pig/China/LNCY/2016/G3P[13] is a natural recombinant strain between the P[23] and P[7] RVA strains, and crossover points for recombination were found at nucleotides (nt) 456 and 804 of the VP4 gene. Elucidating the biological characteristics of porcine rotavirus (PoRV) will be helpful for further analyses of the epidemic characteristics of this virus. The results of this study provide valuable information for RVA recombination and evolution and will facilitate future investigations into the molecular pathogenesis of RVAs.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Non-healing chronic trophic ulceration is very common in leprosy patients. Marjolin's ulcer consists of the malignant transformation of a chronic ulcerative lesion. Nodular melanoma developing from Marjolin's ulcer, caused by a trophic ulceration of a leprosy patient, is very rare with only a few cases reported in the literature. Due to the disguised presentation of these malignancies within trophic ulceration lesions in leprosy, neoplastic transformation is frequently overlooked, leading to misdiagnosed and delayed treatment. This paper reports a case of an 83-year-old man with lepromatous leprosy and chronic ulceration on the foot for 22 years. Over a period of 2 months, the ulcer enlarged, turned black, and became more painful. The patient underwent regional excision and immunotherapy after the diagnosis of malignant nodular melanoma. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the imaging features of meningeal Ewing sarcoma/peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumours (pPNETs). METHODS The imaging features and pathological characteristics of eight cases of surgically and pathologically confirmed Ewing sarcoma/pPNET were analysed retrospectively in light of recent literature on the disease. RESULTS The peak age was between 10 and 20 years. The lesions tended to be spindle shaped and dural based, usually widely so. CT showed that the lesions had slightly uneven high density in five cases and iso-low mixed density in three cases; marked heterogeneous enhancement was seen in all cases after contrast injection. MRI of the lesions showed varying proportions of isointense and hypointense signal in all cases on unenhanced T1 weighted imaging and varying proportions of isointense and hyperintense signal on T2 weighted imaging. After contrast injection, marked heterogeneous enhancement was seen in all cases; three cases showed a short and nodular dural tail and five cases showed adjacent skull erosion and osteolysis. Pathological results included high cell density, haemorrhage and necrosis. The cells resembled lymphocytes and spindle cells with transparent cytoplasm. CD99 and vimentin were expressed by all tumour cells. CONCLUSION Features of meningeal Ewing sarcoma/pPNETs include peak incidence at 10-20 years of age, a broad connection to the meninges, a thick dural tail involved with tumour, skull and scalp erosion and early metastasis. Necrosis and cystic changes are the common histological findings. ADVANCES IN KNOWLEDGE The imaging features of meningeal Ewing sarcoma/pPNETs have not been reported. The study helps to identify meningeal Ewing sarcoma/pPNETs and meningioma.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the feasibility of energy prediction of percutaneous microwave ablation (PMWA) upon uterine leiomyomas and adenomyosis by MRI. METHODS 63 patients (49 patients with 49 uterine leiomyomas and 14 patients with adenomyosis) who underwent ultrasound-guided PMWA treatment were studied during the period from June 2011 to December 2012. Before PMWA, contrast-enhanced MRI (ceMRI) was performed for all of the patients. Based on the signal intensity (SI) of T2 weighted MRI, uterine leiomyomas were classified as hypointense, isointense and hyperintense. During ablation, the output energy of the microwave was set at 50 W, and T11a microwave antennas were used. ceMRI was performed within 7 days after PMWA treatment. Non-perfused volume and energy required per unit volume were analysed statistically. RESULTS When unit volume of lesions was ablated, uterine adenomyosis needed more energy than did uterine leiomyomas, and hyperintense uterine leiomyomas needed more energy than did hypointense pattern. CONCLUSIONS MRI SI of uterine leiomyomas and uterine adenomyosis can be used to predict PMWA energy. ADVANCES IN KNOWLEDGE The conclusions indicate that MRI SI can be used to perform pre-treatment planning, which will make the treatment more precise.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study is to report the efficacy of transbrachial and femoral artery approach endovascular therapy with catheter-directed thrombolysis (CDT) and adjunctive therapy for flush infrarenal aortic occlusion (FIAO). MATERIALS AND METHODS From March 2012 to December 2013, 11 consecutive patients (9 males; mean age 68 years; range 54-80 years) were submitted to endovascular therapy for FIAO. All patients were treated with CDT initially and then adjunctive endovascular treatments were performed to correct the underlying lesions. RESULTS Complete reconstruction of occluded aortoiliac arteries was successfully achieved in 81.8% (9/11) of patients. Left brachial and bilateral femoral arterial accesses were obtained in nine patients, and brachial and unilateral femoral in two patients. The residual lesions after CDT were corrected in nine patients and concomitant endovascular recanalization of superficial femoral artery was performed in two patients. Self-expandable stents were implanted in the all aortoiliac lesions with pre- and post-dilation. No renal or distal runoff embolization was seen during intraoperative angiography. Seven (7/9) patients with rest pain or tissue loss showed significant improvements in symptoms and two (2/9) patients with intermittent claudication gained an improved walking distance. The ABI rose significantly between pre- and post-procedure (0.84 ± 0.18 vs. 0.44 ± 0.13 on the right leg, p < .01; 0.89 ± 0.23 vs. 0.48 ± 0.16 on the left, p < .01). CONCLUSIONS Transbrachial and femoral artery approach endovascular therapy for FIAO offers an alternative to surgical reconstruction with immediate outcomes.

Abstract
Until now the overlapping and diverse pharmacological protective mechanisms of different compounds in the treatment of cerebral ischemia, both on the signaling pathway and network levels have not been revealed. In order to find differential pathway networks from gene expression profiles of hippocampus of ischemic mice treated with baicalin (BA), ursodeoxycholic acid (UA) and jasminoidin (JA), a microarray comprising 16,463 genes, FDA Arraytrack software and Ingenuity Pathway Analysis, was employed. A total of 5, 8, 11, 9 networks and 6, 7, 40, 16 pathways were found in vehicle (vs sham), BA, UA and JA (vs vehicle), respectively. Only 4 and 7 overlapping pathways were shared between BA and UA, UA and JA, accounting for 9.3% and 14.3% of the total number of all pathways, respectively. BA, UA and JA all acted on Ca(2+)-dependent signaling cascades in diverse links. BA intervened in arachidonic acid metabolism. UA affected eicosanoid, cyclin-dependent kinase 5, nuclear factor-kB, and T-helper 1 cell cytokine production. It was found that JA might decrease oxidative damage via nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2-mediated antioxidant response. Compared to vehicle, no overlapping pathways were found among three groups. However, the total of 60 (71.4%) overlapping functions could be approximately divided into diseases and disorders, molecular and cellular functions, physiological system development and function as categories with ratio of 1:1:1. Analysis of network functions and known pathways may be two complementary paradigms for revealing potential pharmacological mechanisms based on the same phenotype variation.

Abstract
Mildew resistance locus o (MLO) is a plant-specific seven-transmembrane (TM) gene family. Several studies have revealed that certain members of the MLO gene family mediate powdery mildew susceptibility in three plant species, namely, Arabidopsis, barley, and tomato. The sequenced cucumber genome provides an opportunity to conduct a comprehensive overview of the MLO gene family. Fourteen genes (designated CsMLO01 through CsMLO14) have been identified within the Cucumis sativus genome by using an in silico cloning method with the MLO amino acid sequences of Arabidopsis thaliana and rice as probes. Sequence alignment revealed that numerous features of the gene family, such as TMs, a calmodulin-binding domain, peptide domains I and II, and 30 important amino acid residues for MLO function, are well conserved. Phylogenetic analysis of the MLO genes from cucumber and other plant species reveals seven different clades (I through VII). Three of these clades comprised MLO genes from A. thaliana, rice, maize, and cucumber, suggesting that these genes may have evolved after the divergence of monocots and dicots. In silico mapping showed that these CsMLOs were located on chromosomes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 without any obvious clustering, except CsMLO01. To our knowledge, this paper is the first comprehensive report on MLO genes in C. sativus. These findings will facilitate the functional characterization of the MLOs related to powdery mildew susceptibility and assist in the development of disease resistance in cucumber.

Abstract
Abstract
A new type of polymer processing machine, a centrifugal extruder, is introduced and its performance studied experimentally and analyzed theoretically. Calculations show that by means of appropriate choice of the geometrical parameters of the rotor drum and the rotor speed, the pressure of the solid polymer in the rotor drum can reach a value of several MPa. Theoretical analysis also shows that the most important factors influencing the solid conveying pressure in the rotor drum are the radius and slope angle of the rotor drum, the rotation speed of the rotor drum, the friction factor between the solid polymer and the drum surface, and the density of the polymer. An experimental rotor drum was designed in order to validate the mathematical model used for calculation of the solid conveying pressure in the rotor drum. The results of the experiments show good agreement with the theoretical predictions.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of total endovascular repair of the aortic arch in pigs using improved integrated double-branched stent grafts. METHODS Improved self-expandable stent grafts with a main body and two integrated branches were prepared for the repair of the aortic arch in six pigs. The feasibility of using these stent grafts was evaluated with arteriography, computed tomography (CT), computed tomography angiography (CTA) and autopsy three months following the procedure. RESULTS The double-branched stent grafts were placed successfully in the aortic arch in all six pigs. All pigs survived for at least three months and their biological behaviour was normal. Arteriography, CTA and animal necropsy revealed good fixation in all cases. Aortic valve function and coronary ostia remained intact, and CT of the head did not detect any lesion of cerebral infarction. CONCLUSIONS Endovascular repair of the aortic arch with an integrated double-branched stent graft is safe and feasible in animal studies.

Abstract
Objectives To assess efficacy and safety of polidocanol (POL) versus placebo in the treatment of C1 and C2 non-saphenous varicose veins in Chinese patients. Methods Patients were randomly assigned to POL or placebo. POL 0.5%, 1% and 3% were administered depending on varicose vein type. Response after 12 weeks was defined as Grade 4 or 5 on a digital imaging-based five-point scale (C1 veins) or occlusion and/or absence of reflux >0.5 second (C2 veins). Safety was evaluated with a five-point scale and standard safety assessments. Results Two hundred and eighty-five patients were treated. POL 0.5%, 1% and 3% were each superior to placebo ( P < 0.001); response rates: 87.1% versus 13.6%, 86.4% versus 12.5% and 88.6% versus 4.3%, respectively. Significantly more POL than placebo patients were satisfied/very satisfied with treatment. POL was well tolerated, with mostly symptoms at the injection site reported. Conclusions Sclerotherapy with POL 0.5%, 1% and 3% was efficacious and safe in Chinese patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) theory, functional dyspepsia (FD) can be divided into different syndromes according to different clinical symptoms and signs, and the most common one is spleen-deficiency and qi-stagnation syndrome that can be treated by Chinese traditional patent medicine--two kinds of Zhizhu pills, between which the primary difference in ingredients is that one contains immature orange fruit of Citrus aurantium L.(IFCA) and the other contains that of Citrus sinensis Osbeck (IFCS). The trial's objective was to compare the efficacy of two kinds of Zhizhu pills on symptom changes in patients with FD of spleen-deficiency and qi-stagnation syndrome. METHODS A randomized, group sequential, double-blinded, multicenter trial was conducted in patients with FD of spleen-deficiency and qi-stagnation syndrome at 3 hospitals in Beijing between June 2003 and May 2005. Participants were randomly allocated into two groups (IFCA group and IFCS group) in a 1:1 ratio, and respectively took one of the two kinds of Zhizhu pills orally, 6 g each time, 3 times a day, for 4 weeks. Statistical analysis was performed with use of a group sequential method, the triangular test (TT). RESULTS A total of 163 patients were randomized, and 3 patients were excluded from analysis because of early dropouts, leaving 160 patients (IFCA group: n = 82; IFCS group: n = 78) for statistical analysis. Three interim analyses were done after 62, 116, and 160 patients had completed their 4-week treatment, respectively. At the third interim analysis, the sample path crossed the upper boundary and the trial was stopped, the cure-markedly effective rates were 45% for IFCS group and 67% for IFCA group, respectively, the one-sided p-value was 0.0036, the median unbiased estimate of the odds ratio (OR) for the benefit of IFCA relative to IFCS was 2.91 with 95%CI: 1.40 to 6.06.No adverse events were observed in the two groups. CONCLUSIONS Zhizhu pills containing IFCA was superior to Zhizhu pills containing IFCS in the treatment of FD of spleen-deficiency and qi-stagnation syndrome. The application of group sequential analysis in clinical trials of TCM may offer some financial and ethical benefits. TRIAL REGISTRATION Chinese Clinical Trial Registry (ChiCTR): ChiCTR-TRC-00000485.
