Abstract
This study was to determine the effects of the mixture of glycerol monolaurate and cinnamaldehyde (GCM) supplementation on the intestinal morphology, immunity, antioxidant status and cecal microbiota of laying hens. A total of 1,120 healthy laying hens (Jingfen-1 strain) at the age of 14 wk were randomly divided into 4 groups with 10 replicates of 28 layers in each and layers were fed diets containing 0 (control group), or 250, 500, and 1,000 mg/kg GCM for 12 wk. The results showed that dietary supplementation with GCM significantly increased intestinal villus height and villus height/crypt depth, duodenal villus area, total superoxide disumutase activities in the liver and jejunum, jejunal glutathione peroxidase activities while decreased duodenal and jejunal crypt depth, hydrogen peroxide content in the liver and jejunal malondialdehyde content of laying hens aging 28 wk (P < 0.05). Meanwhile, GCM addition significantly increased serum immunoglobulin A and immunoglobulin M concentration of layers at the age of 20, 24, and 28 wk (P < 0.05). Moreover, it was observed in the 16S rRNA sequencing that the addition of GCM elevated the abundance and diversity of gut microbiota in laying hens. The predominant bacteria from each group were Bacteroidota and Firmicutes at the phylum level and Bacteroides and Lactobacillus were the dominant genera. The composition and structure of cecal microflora were changed by the addition of GCM to the diet of laying hens. In conclusion, the addition of GCM (500-1,000 mg/kg diet) can improve intestinal morphology, immune function, intestinal and liver antioxidant status and intestinal flora of laying hens, thereby improving intestinal digestion and absorption capacity. These findings provide a new way to further explore the mechanism of GCM improving intestinal health.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the endoscopic and histopathological features, diagnosis and differential diagnosis of gastric hamartomatous inverted polyp (GHIP). Methods: Five cases of GHIP were collected at the University Town Hospital of Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Chinese Medicine, Guangzhou, China, from May 2021 to May 2023. The endoscopic, pathological and immunohistochemical features of the 5 GHIP cases were analyzed. The relevant literature was reviewed. Results: There were 3 males and 2 females, aged from 49 to 60 years, with a mean age of 56 years. The lesions were located in the fundus and body of the stomach, and presented as polyps or masses under endoscopy. Microscopically, the lesions were mainly in the submucosa and consisted of lobulated or clustered gastric glandular epithelium surrounded by hyperplastic smooth muscle. In some areas, there were differentiated glandular elements mimicking the normal gastric mucosa. The irregularly dilated glandular elements in the center were lined by hyperplastic foveolar epithelium, while the glands in the periphery were fundic or pyloric glands. In addition, in some areas, the glands showed cystic expansion, disordered arrangement and lack of differentiation. The hyperplastic glandular epithelium included foveolar epithelium, fundic gland and pyloric gland. There were scattered neuroendocrine cells and smooth muscle bundles in the stroma. Immunohistochemically, the tumor cells were positive for MUC5AC, MUC6, Pepsinogen Ⅰ and H+/K+ ATPase β, but negative for MUC2. The scattered neuroendocrine cells were positive for synaptophysin, and the desmin stain highlighted hyperplastic smooth muscle bundles. One case was classified as type 2 gastric inverted polyp, and 4 cases were classified as type 3. Conclusions: GHIP is a rare gastric polyp with unique histological features. It should be distinguished from inverted hyperplastic polyp, gastritis cystica profunda, adenomyoma, hyperplastic polyps and well-differentiated gastric tubular adenocarcinoma, etc. Improving the understanding of its pathogenesis and diagnostic features can help avoid misdiagnoses.

Abstract
Dyslipidemia is an important risk factor of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). Statins delay the occurrence and development of ASCVD, and reduce the risk of cardiovascular events and death. Due to safety concerns, there exist insufficient use of lipid-lowering agents and a high withdrawal rate of the agents in the elderly. To promote the prevention and treatment of ASCVD, this expert consensus is issued and focuses on the management of dyslipidemia of Chinese elderly basing on the clinical evidence of the use of lipid-lowering drugs by the elderly, and the lipid management guidelines and expert consensus recommendations at home and abroad.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the incidence and trend of short-term outcomes among preterm infants born <34 weeks' gestation. Methods: A secondary analysis of data from the standardized database established by a multicenter cluster-randomized controlled study "reduction of infection in neonatal intensive care units (NICU) using the evidence-based practice for improving quality (REIN-EPIQ) study". This study was conducted in 25 tertiary NICU. A total of 27 192 infants with gestational age <34 weeks at birth and admitted to NICU within the first 7 days of life from May 2015 to April 2018 were enrolled. Infants with severe congenital malformation were excluded. Descriptive analyses were used to describe the mortality and major morbidities of preterm infants by gestational age groups and different admission year groups. Cochran-Armitage test and Jonckheere-Terpstra test were used to analyze the trend of incidences of mortality and morbidities in 3 study-years. Multiple Logistic regression model was constructed to analyze the differences of outcomes in 3 study-years adjusting for confounders. Results: A total of 27 192 preterm infants were enrolled with gestational age of (31.3±2.0) weeks at birth and weight of (1 617±415) g at birth. Overall, 9.5% (2 594/27 192) of infants were discharged against medical advice, and the overall mortality rate was 10.7% (2 907/27 192). Mortality for infants who received complete care was 4.7% (1 147/24 598), and mortality or any major morbidity was 26.2% (6 452/24 598). The incidences of moderate to severe bronchopulmonary dysplasia, sepsis, severe intraventricular hemorrhage or periventricular leukomalacia, proven necrotizing enterocolitis, and severe retinopathy of prematurity were 16.0% (4 342/27 192), 11.9% (3 225/27 192), 6.8% (1 641/24 206), 3.6% (939/25 762) and 1.5% (214/13 868), respectively. There was a decreasing of the overall mortality (P<0.001) during the 3 years. Also, the incidences for sepsis and severe retinopathy of prematurity both decreased (both P<0.001). However, there were no significant differences in the major morbidity in preterm infants who received complete care during the 3-year study period (P=0.230). After adjusting for confounders, infants admitted during the third study year showed significantly lower risk of overall mortality (adjust OR=0.62, 95%CI 0.55-0.69, P<0.001), mortality or major morbidity, moderate to severe bronchopulmonary dysplasia, sepsis and severe retinopathy of prematurity, compared to those admitted in the first study year (all P<0.05). Conclusions: From 2015 to 2018, the mortality and major morbidities among preterm infants in Chinese NICU decreased, but there is still space for further efforts. Further targeted quality improvement is needed to improve the overall outcome of preterm infants.

Abstract
An eleven-year-old boy visited the Department of Ophthalmology due to visual acuity loss accompanied by high intraocular tension in the left eye for one year. Besides glaucoma, the typical ocular manifestations of neurofibromatosis type 1 such as bilateral Lisch nodules of the iris, multiple patchy choroidal nodules and retinal microvascular abnormalities were identified, and Cafe-au-lait macules appeared on the body skin. Based on the medical history, clinical presentation and auxiliary examination results, the diagnosis of neurofibromatosis type 1 with secondary glaucoma in the left eye was confirmed.

Abstract
In our continuous exploration for bioactive polysaccharides, a novel polysaccharide FMP-2 was isolated and purified from the fruiting bodies of Morchella esculenta by alkali-assisted extraction. FMP-2 had an average molecular weight of 1.09 × 106 Da and contained mannose, glucuronic acid, glucose, galactose, and arabinose in a molar ratio of 4.10:0.22:1.00:5.75:0.44. The backbone of FMP-2 mainly consisted of 1,2-α-D-Galp, 1,6-α-D-Galp, and 1,4-α-D-Manp, with branches of 1,4,6-α-D-Manp and 1,2,6-α-D-Galp. FMP-2 can stimulate phagocytosis and promote the secretion of NO, ROS, and cytokines like IL-6, IL-1β, and TNF-α in RAW264.7 cells ranging from 25 to 400 μg/mL. FMP-2 had great repairing effect on the immune injury of zebrafish induced by chloramphenicol. The phagocytosis ability of zebrafish macrophages and the proliferation of neutrophils can be greatly enhanced by polysaccharide FMP-2 with concentrations from 50 to 200 μg/mL. These findings suggest that FMP-2 might be used as a potential immunomodulator in the food and pharmaceutical industries.

Abstract
Objective: To explore the incidence and age distribution of fundus abnormalities in pediatric patients aged 0-3 years in northwest China. Methods: A retrospective study of the clinical data of 8808 pediatric patients aged 0-3 years who underwent fundus examination with a wide-filed digital retinal imaging system and an indirect ophthalmoscope in our hospital from January 2008 to December 2019 were performed. There were 5092 males and 3716 females, with a median age of 1 month (range, 3 days to 3 years), a mean gestational age of 34.32 (SD 2.92) weeks (range, 24 to 42 weeks) and a mean birth weight of 2006.92 (SD 709.23) g (range, 490 to 5500 g), from Shaanxi Province (7415 cases, 84.18%), Gansu Province (770 cases, 8.74%), Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region (94 cases, 1.07%), Qinghai Province (53 cases, 0.60%), Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region (14 cases, 0.16%) and other neighboring areas (462 cases, 5.25%). The fundus condition of the enrolled pediatric patients was documented to calculate the annual detection rate. The joinpoint regression model was drawn to estimate the annual percent change and average annual percent change. The constituent ratios and age distribution of different types of fundus abnormalities were finally analyzed. Results: Fundus abnormalities were detected in 2 531 cases (28.74%). During the 12 years, the number of pediatric patients undergoing fundus examination each year in our center increased rapidly in the first 7 years, and then kept almost stable, while the number of fundus abnormality cases increased year by year. The positive detection rate showed an overall upward trend with an average annual percent change of +7.2%, and it was +30.09% from 2016 to 2019. Among all the pediatric patients with fundus abnormalities, there were 1 678 cases with developmental diseases (66.30%), 232 cases with hereditary diseases (9.16%), 140 cases with ocular tumor (5.53%), 64 cases with ophthalmic manifestations of systemic diseases (2.53%), 31 cases with ocular trauma (1.23%), 12 cases with infectious diseases or inflammation (0.48%) and 438 cases with other ocular abnormalities (17.31%). The top 5 abnormalities were retinopathy of prematurity (ROP; 1477 cases, 58.36%), gray patchy retinopathy (225 cases, 8.89%), retinal hemorrhage (157 cases, 6.20%), retinoblastoma (137 cases, 5.41%) and familial exudative vitreoretinopathy (77 cases, 3.04%). Fundus abnormalities varied with age. ROP, developmental diseases other than ROP, hereditary diseases, ocular trauma and infectious diseases were mostly detected in pediatric patients at 0-6 months old, while tumors were mostly detected after 1 year old. Conclusions: The detection rate of fundus abnormalities in the Department of Ophthalmology of Xijing Hospital of Air Force Medical University, a tertiary referral center in northwest China, increased notably year by year. The abnormalities were mainly developmental and hereditary lesions as well as of certain age distribution. They occurred with the highest frequency between birth and 6 months of age, in which ROP was in the ascendancy. Meanwhile, the detection rate of other developmental, hereditary and neoplastic disorders increased with age. Therefore, a comprehensive and objective understanding of the fundus disease in infants is essential. (Chin J Ophthalmol, 2021, 57: 777-783).

Abstract
A 31-month-old female patient presented to our department of Ophthalmology in Xijing Hospital with insufficiency closed eyelid in left eye and photophobia for one month. Unsteady gait with asymmetrical face, bilateral auricle deformity and deafness could be observed on the pediatric patient. Esotropia in left eye combined, left facial nerve palsy, with binocular anisometropia was checked out after general eye examination. Echocardiography revealed that she was treated with ligation of the ductus arteriosus. A de novo pathogenic variant, c.3392T>C, was identified in CHD7 gene, which supported the diagnosis of CHARGE syndrome. (Chin J Ophthalmol, 2021, 57: 618-620).

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of the present study was to investigate whether systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) and neutrophil-to-platelet ratio (NLR) were associated with bone mineral density (BMD) in postmenopausal women. METHODS In this cross-sectional study, we enrolled 413 postmenopausal women who never received menopause hormone therapy. The relationship between SII, NLR, and BMD was investigated by linear regression analysis. RESULTS Significant inverse association was observed between SII and BMD in postmenopausal women. The mean BMD in each quartile of SII level were 0.923, 0.914, 0.900, and 0.876 g/cm2, respectively (p = .011). After adjusting for covariates, SII levels remained significantly associated with BMD (regression coefficients for quartiles 1-3 vs. quartile 4 were 0.035, 0.029, and 0.023, respectively; p for trend <.05). An inverse association was also found between NLR and BMD in postmenopausal women. However, there was no significant association between NLR and BMD after adjusting for covariates. CONCLUSION The quartile of SII was negatively associated with the mean BMD in postmenopausal women, independent of age, body mass index, sex hormone levels, and other factors. Therefore, SII can be used as a new predictor of bone loss in postmenopausal women.

Abstract
With improved neonatal care, the survival rate of premature infants has been greatly increased, and retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) has already been the leading cause of blindness in children. Thereupon screening and treatment of ROP have been deeply performed in China. However, the implementation and the detection rate vary greatly in different regions. In this article, based on the 20-year prevalence data of ROP in all parts of the country before 2010, we review and summarize the literatures from 2008 to 2018, in order to track and update the screening data of ROP in the mainland of China and to find the incidence trend during the decade. The evidence of the changing prevalence of ROP would benefit further prevention of this serious eye disease. (Chin J Ophthalmol, 2021, 57: 379-385).

Abstract
Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) has become the leading cause of childhood blindness worldwide. It is the key point of ROP prevention and treatment to screen out and deal with severe ROP that require treatment. However, more than 70% ROP regressed spontaneously without treatment. It is useful in deeply understanding the natural course of ROP and is helpful to develop strategies of ROP screening and prevention, that the characteristics of spontaneous regression of ROP are investigated comprehensively. The epidemic characteristics, clinical features, time course, related factors and visual impairment of ROP regression will be systematically summarized in this review.(Chin J Ophthalmol, 2021, 57: 150-155).

Abstract
Objective: To establish core items of nutrition literacy for general population in China. Methods: The framework system and preliminary items of nutrition literacy were established through literature review and experts' consultation. Content validity test was used to determine the nutrition literacy item. Thirteen experts in the field of human nutrition, health education and nutrition and diseases were invited to score the importance of each nutrition literacy item via Email. The judgment basis and familiarity of experts towards the items, active coefficient, and content validity were analyzed to generate the final list of nutrition literacy items. Results: 92.3% of questionnaires in two rounds were collected.The active coefficient of experts was satisfied and the authority coefficient was 0.96.In the content validity evaluation, the correlation I-CVI value of each item was above 0.83 and the κ value was above 0.74. The evaluation result was excellent.After the second round of expert consultation, all selected items met the inclusion criteria. We identified the final list of nutrition literacy items consisting of three scales (knowledge and concepts, lifestyles and dietary behaviors, and basic skills), ten subscales (basic nutrition philosophy, food classification and nutrition knowledge, healthy weight, eating behavior and culture, balanced diet, exercise health, food assessment, nutrition information acquisition and decision, nutrition safety, and weight management)with 25 items in total. Conclusions: The framework system and core items of nutrition literacy are established for Chinese people based on the content validity evaluation. The experts involved in the consultation process present a performance with good representativeness, enthusiasm and authority, and the content validity evaluation result is satisfied.

After the second round of consultation, all selected items met the inclusion criteria. We identified the final list of nutrition literacy items consisting of three scales (knowledge and concepts, lifestyles and dietary behaviors, and basic skills), twelve subscales (reasonable nutrition, healthy weight, environment of dining, food classification, nutrition and disease, eat regularly, balanced diet, exercise health, information getting, household food measurement, reading nutrition label and calculating, and food safety)with 20 items in total. Conclusions: The framework system and core items of nutrition literacy are established for Chinese older people based on the content validity evaluation. The experts involved in the consultation process present a performance with good representativeness, enthusiasm and authority, and the content validity evaluation result is satisfied.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Inflammatory diseases are risk factors for osteoporosis. We aimed to explore whether fibrinogen, which is linked to chronic inflammation, is associated with bone mineral density (BMD) in menopausal women. METHODS In this cross-sectional study, we analyzed 339 menopausal women from Zhejiang Province between January 2016 and October 2019. Linear regression analysis was performed to assess the relationship between fibrinogen and BMD. RESULTS Significant inverse association was observed between the serum fibrinogen level and BMD in menopausal women. The mean BMD in each quartile of fibrinogen level was 0.901, 0.897, 0.892, and 0.855 g/cm2, respectively (p = 0.027). After adjusting for age, body mass index, metabolic profiles, blood inflammatory factors, and serum levels of estradiol, calcium, phosphorus, and alkaline phosphatase, fibrinogen levels remained significantly associated with BMD (regression coefficients for quartiles 1-3 vs. quartile 4 were 0.046, 0.027, and 0.036, respectively; p for trend <0.05). CONCLUSIONS Higher fibrinogen levels were associated with lower BMD in menopausal women, which was independent of age, body mass index, estradiol, and other factors. Therefore, serum fibrinogen can be used as a new predictor of reduced BMD in menopausal women.

Abstract
Objective: To access the feasibility, effectiveness and safety of transcatheter closure of ventricular septal defect (VSD) with right coronary cusp bulge. Methods: The study population consisted of 40 children (22 boys and 18 girls) undergoing transcatheter intervention for VSD with right coronary cusp bulge in Shanghai Children's Medical Center from August 2013 to June 2017. All patients were examined using transthoracic echocardiography and cardiovascular angiography before occlusion and received transcatheter closure of VSD by placing an occlude. During the operation, angiography and transthoracic echocardiography were used to detect residual shunts, new-onset or aggravation of aortic regurgitation, and surface electrocardiogram was used to assess the impact of occlusion on the conduction system. The children were followed up to evaluate the degree of aortic regurgitation and the presence of heart block by transthoracic echocardiography and electrocardiogram in outpatient department. Comparative analysis between two groups was used by t test. Results: The average age of the patients was (5.1±3.2) years, weight(20.6±10.7) kg. The diameter of defect shunt was (3.3±0.9) cm. The VSD of all 40 patients were successfully occluded immediately, and three patients (8%) with filament residual shunt were observed during the operation. No major surgical complication such as death, pericardial tamponade, embolism of important organs, infective endocarditis occurred during the perioperative period. During the follow-up period, the positions of all the occluders were good, the residual shunt in three patients disappeared, and no new-onset or aggravated aortic regurgitation occurred. Electrocardiogram did not reveal any atrioventricular block, and one patient suffered from an incomplete right bundle branch block. There were significant differences between pre- and post-occlusion regarding the left ventricular end diastolic diameter ((3.8±0.5) vs. (3.7±0.5) cm, t=2.092, P=0.043), the left ventricular end systolic diameter ( (2.4±0.3) vs. (2.2±0.4) cm, t=2.068, P=0.045), and the QRS interval ((75.4±10.4) vs. (79.8±11.4) ms, t=-2.277, P=0.028). No significant differences were found between pre- and post-operation regarding the left ventricular ejection fraction (67.8%±4.7% vs. 68.1%±4.6%, t=-0.447, P=0.657) and the PR interval ((125.6±14.7) vs. (122.6±14.2) ms, t=1.540, P=0.132). Conclusions: Interventional closure of VSD with right coronary cusp bulge has small impact on aortic valve activity in children. With appropriate indications and methods, transcatheter interventional occlusion should be considered because it is effective for children diagnosed with VSD combined with right coronary cusp bulge.

Abstract
During lactation, large amounts of calcium are exported from the mammary gland into milk to ensure skeletal growth of the offspring. Recent studies revealed that serotonin (5-HT) is essential to stimulate skeletal calcium resorption for milk synthesis. Our objective was to explore the correlation between circulating 5-HT and serum calcium and parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTHrP) concentrations around parturition in dairy goats. We also investigated the effect of 5-HT on PTHrP expression in cultured primary goat mammary epithelial cells (GMEC). Blood samples of multiparous Guanzhong dairy goats were collected on day -5 to 3 postpartum for analysis of serum concentrations of calcium, 5-HT, and PTHrP. Results revealed that from day -3 to 0 postpartum serum calcium and 5-HT concentrations decreased progressively, but serum PTHrP concentration only had a sharp drop in the postpartum period sampled. Correlation analysis of circulating 5-HT and serum calcium and PTHrP concentrations on day 1 and 2 postpartum revealed that low serum 5-HT concentration was positively correlated with serum total calcium or PTHrP concentration. By knocking down tryptophan hydroxylase-1 (TPH1) or adding 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) to decrease or increase the levels of 5-HT in GMEC, we observed that 5-HTP increased PTHrP expression in a dose-dependent manner and siTPH1 decreased PTHrP protein expression. Furthermore, 5-HT increased mRNA abundance of calcium-sensing receptor (CaSR) in a dose-dependent manner and decreased the expression of plasma membrane Ca2+ ATPase-1 (PMCA1). Taken together, 5-HT seems to induce PTHrP expression in goat mammary cells during and after parturition. These findings suggest that increasing 5-HT biosynthesis could be a potential therapeutic target for prevention of hypocalcemia in dairy goats.

Abstract
Objective:Through analysis of the tympanic membrane perforation rate and hearing improvement rate with chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) by myringoplasty,to observe the effect of different preoperative conditions such as middle ear lesion,eustachian tube (ET) function and infection status on the postoperative curative effect.Method:Retrospective analysis of EENT Hospital of Fudan University from January 2012 to November 2016 during the 203 cases (203 ears) with clinical data of myringoplasty: according to intraoperative exploration of the presence of purulent secretions in the tympanic cavity,divided into infection active group and infection quiescence group; according to the preoperative results of the function of ET with acoustic impedance test divided into dysfunction or good group; according to the preoperative temporal bone HRCT suggested that the middle ear (mastoid cells,tympanic antrum and tympanic cavity) with or without soft tissue density,divided into the group with no focal lesion and the group with focal lesion. Review endoscopy and pure tone audiometry after 3 to 6 months. Using SPSS 19.0 statistical software to compare the differences among them of tympanic membrane perforation rate and hearing improvement rate.Result:Single factor analysis: ①The infection quiescence group of tympanic membrane perforation rate was 11.93%(13/109),higher than the infection active group [8.51%(8/94)]; the infection quiescence group of hearing improvement rate was 75.23%(82/109),below the infection active group [79.79%(75/94)],no statistically significant differences of them (P>0.05).②The group with dysfunction of ET of tympanic membrane perforation rate was 14.06%(9/64),significantly higher than the group[4.04%(4/99)]with good function ET,with statistical difference of them (P<0.05); the group with dysfunction of ET of hearing improvement rate was 76.56% (49/64),lower than the group[81.82%(81/99)]with good function of ET,no significant difference of them (P>0.05).③The group with no obvious lesion of tympanic membrane perforation rate was 9.09% (10/110),lower than the group [11.83%(11/93)]with focal lesion; the group with no obvious lesion of hearing improvement rate was 78.18% (86/110),higher than the group with focal lesion [76.34%(71/93)],no significant difference of them (P>0.05).Multivariate analysis: ①There was a significant correlation of postop-erative tympanic membrane perforation rate with preoperative ET functi-on (P<0.05).There was no significant correlation of the postoperative tympanic membrane perforation rate with the infection status and the temporal bone HRCT images in the middle ear lesions (P>0.05).②There was no significant correlation of the postoperative hearing improvement rate with the infection status,the ET function and the temporal bone HRCT images in the middle ear lesions (P>0.05).Conclusion:Dysfunction of ET and localized lesions of the ear were more common in infection active;the accumulation of purulent exudate on the surface of the tympanic mucosa and localized lesions of the middle ear did not affect the healing rate of the tympanic membrane and the hearing improvement rate; ET function is one of the most important factors that affect the healing rate of tympanic membrane after operation,the patients with ET dysfunction are more likely to affect tympanic membrane perforation,but does not affect the hearing improvement rate.

Abstract
Objective:The aim of this study is to explore the feasibility and clinical effect of tympanoplasty combined with ventilation tube insertion in otitis media.Method: Retrospective analysis of 35 patients with eustachian tube obstruction or tympanic adhesions for tympanoplasty combined with ventil ation tube insertion in otitis media in EENT Hospital of Fudan University from April 2008 to December 2010. Preoperative routine hearing tests and temporal bone CT examination. Completely remove of lesions at the same time and as much as possible to protect the integrity of the tympanic wall mucosa during operation. Reconstruction of the ossicular chain and simultaneous tympanic membrane hole and placed silicone T-type ventilation tube. All patients were tested for pure tone auditory threshold at 3 months after operation. The patients were followed up for 12 to 44 months.Result:The average hearing level of PTA (0.5,1.0,2.0 kHz) was (31.71±12.25) dBHL. 28 cases (80.0%) had improved to 40 dBHL after operation, 5 cases (14.3%) had hearing enhancement of 10-20 dBHL, and 2 patients (5.7%) had no change in hearing. The number of cases with air bone gap (ABG)(0.5, 1.0, 2.0 kHz) reduced to less than 20 dBHL was 25, 32 and 34 after operation. Ventilation tube self-prolapse in15 cases, 12 cases of artificial removal and 8 cases of inpatient. Twenty seven cases were left perforation of tympanic membrane, of which 22 cases (81.5%) were spontaneously healed and 5 cases(18.5%) were left with small perforations less than 2 mm in diameter. All of them had dry ear after operation, none of them had recurrence after operation, 33 cases (94.3%) had dry ear within 12 weeks, and only 2 cases(5.7%) had dry ear for more than 6 months.Conclusion: Tympanoplasty combined with ventilation tube insertion for the middle ear mucosal dysfunction and eustachian tube mucosal dysfunction of otitis media treatment effect is obvious. It does not extend the dry ear time and cause postoperative recurrence. This operation is feasible, reliable and effective.

Abstract
Objective:Analysis of perforation rate and hearing improvement rate of patients with chronic suppurative otitis media after operation, to observe the effect of tympanoplasty with or without mastoidectomy.Method:Retrospective analysis the clinical data of EENT Hospital of Fudan University from January 2011 to December 2016, 167 cases (ears) by tympanoplasty. According to the surgical approach were divided into simple tympanoplasty in 108 cases (group A), tympanoplasty with mastoidectomy in 59 cases(group B)(CWU in 23 cases, IBM in 11 cases, CWD in 25 cases). Endoscopy and pure tone audiometry after 3 to 6 months, using SPSS19.0 software to compare the difference of tympanic membrane perforation rate and hearing improvement rate. Result:The tympanic membrane perforation rate of group A and group B were 8.33%(9/108) and 5.08%(3/59),there was no significant difference(χ²= 0.604, P> 0.05). The hearing improvement rate of group A and group B were 83.33%(90/108) and 77.97%(46/59), there was no significant difference (χ²= 0.727, P> 0.05).Conclusion:For chronic suppurative otitis media with lesions confined to the mastoid and tympanic sinus, the removal of mastoid lesions in the treatment of tympanic membrane healing and improvement of hearing can not achieve better results than simple tympanoplasty.

Abstract
Objective:The intraoperative and postoperative clinical indexes of myringoplasty performed by endoscope or by microscope were collected retrospectively, the differences between the two different surgical methods were analysized. Method:Retrospective analysis of the clinical data of 70 cases (70 ears) udergoing myringoplasty in the department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, at the Second People's Hospital of Kashi from June 2014 to August 2015. According to the surgical approach cases were divided into two groups, 30 cases in group A by endoscopic myringoplasty and 40 cases in group B by microscope myringoplasty. The operation time, blood loss, postoperative dry ear time, wound healing scar hyperplasia, tympanic membrane perforation rate and hearing improvement rate were compared between the two groups, and SPSS 19.0 statistical software was used to analyze the differences between the two groups. Result:The operation time: Group A had an average of (35.23±6.38)min, less than group B (42.60±7.97)min, with statistical difference (P<0.05). The intraoperative blood loss: the average of group A was (7.33±2.11)ml, less than group B (17.93±3.84)ml, with statistical difference (P<0.05). The postoperative dry ear time more than 1 month: group A was 40%, lower than Group B (75%), with statistical difference (P<0.05). The postoperative incision healing scar hyperplasia: group A was 0%, lower than group B (5%), no significant difference (P>0.05). The tympanic membrane perforation rate: group A was 3.33%, lower than group B (7.5%), no significant difference (P>0.05). The postoperative hearing improvement rate: group A was 76.67%, lower than group B (80.00%), no significant difference (P>0.05). Conclusion:Compared with the traditional microscope surgery, endoscopic myringoplasty is a minimally invasive surgical technique which can get the same curative effect, but with a shorter operation time, less intraoperative blood loss, dry ear in shorter time , recovery more quickly, beautiful incision and other advantages. So it is worthy of clinical application.

Abstract
The oocyte is the largest cell found in multicellular organisms. Mitochondria, as the energy factories for cells, are found in high numbers in oocytes, as they provide the energy for oocyte maturation, fertilization, and embryo formation via oxidative phosphorylation. Failure of assisted reproduction is mainly attributed to oocyte aging and increased aneuploidy. As the most numerous organelle in the oocyte, the mitochondrion has been confirmed as a crucial player in the process of oocyte aging, which is highly influenced by mitochondrion dysfunction. Every mitochondrion contains one or more mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) molecule, which, at about 16.5 KD in length, encodes 13 proteins. In this review, we discuss the function of mitochondria and the relationship between mtDNA and oocyte aging. We also discuss technologies that aim to enhance oocyte developmental potential and delay ovarian aging.

In this work, we conducted notch fatigue experiments of two high-strength materials, i.e. a Ti32.8Zr30.2Ni5.3Cu9Be22.7 metallic glass (MG) and a 00Ni18Co15Mo8Ti ultra-high strength steel (CM400 UHSS), and compared their notch fatigue behavior. Experimental results showed that although both the strength and plasticity of the MG were much lower than those of the UHSS, the fatigue endurance limit of the notched MG approached to that of the notched UHSS, and the fatigue ratio of the notched MG was even higher. This interesting finding can be attributed to the unique shear banding mechanism of MG. It was found that during fatigue process abundant shear bands formed ahead of the notch root and in the vicinity of the crack in the notched MG, while limited plastic deformation was observed in the notched UHSS. The present results may improve the understanding on the fatigue mechanisms of high-strength materials and offer new strategies for structural design and engineering application of MG components with geometrical discontinuities.

Abstract
The MLO (powdery mildew locus O) gene family is important in resistance to powdery mildew (PM). In this study, all of the members of the MLO family were identified and analyzed in the strawberry (Fragaria vesca) genome. The strawberry contains at least 20 members of the MLO family, and the protein sequence contained between 171 and 1485 amino acids, with 0-34 introns. Chromosomal localization showed that the MLOs were unevenly distributed on each of the chromosomes, except for chromosome 4. The greatest number of MLOs (seven) was found on chromosome 3. A phylogenetic tree showed that the MLOs were divided into seven groups (I-VII), four of which consisted of MLOs from strawberry, Arabidopsis thaliana, rice, and maize, suggesting that these genes may have evolved after the divergence of monocots and dicots. Multiple sequence alignment showed that strawberry MLO candidates related to powdery mildew resistance possessed seven highly conserved transmembrane domains, a calmodulin-binding domain, and two conserved regions, all of which are important domains for powdery mildew resistance genes. Expressed sequence tag analysis revealed that the MLOs were induced by multiple abiotic stressors, including low and high temperature, drought, and high salinity. These findings will contribute to the functional characterization of MLOs related to PM susceptibility, and will assist in the development of disease resistance in strawberries.

Abstract
Discovering a generalized criterion that can predict the mechanical failure of various different structural materials is one of ultimate goals for scientists in both material and mechanics communities. Since the first study on the failure criterion of materials by Galileo, about three centuries have passed. Now we eventually find the “generalized energy criterion”, as presented here, which appears to be one universal law for various different kinds of materials. The validity of the energy criterion for quantitatively predicting the failure is experimentally confirmed using a metallic glass. The generalized energy criterion reveals the competition and interaction between shear and cleavage, the two fundamental inherent failure mechanisms, and thus provides new physical insights into the failure prediction of materials and structural components.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to determine the effect of forage: concentrate ratio (F:C) on growth performance, ruminal fermentation and blood metabolites of housing-feeding yaks. Thirty-two Maiwa male yaks (initial body weight = 207.99±3.31 kg) were randomly assigned to four dietary treatments (8 yaks per treatment). Experimental diets were: A, B, C, D which contained 70:30, 60:40, 50:50 and 40:60 F:C ratios, respectively. Dry matter intake and average daily gain in yaks fed the C and D diets were greater (p<0.05) than yaks fed the A and B diets. No differences were found in ruminal NH3-N, total volatile fatty acids, acetate, butyrate, valerate, and isovalerate concentrations. The propionate concentration was increased (p<0.05) in the C and D groups compared with the A and B diets. In contrast, the acetate to propionate ratio was decreased and was lowest (p<0.05) in the C group relative to the A and B diets, but was similar with the D group. For blood metabolites, no differences were found in serum concentrations of urea-N, albumin, triglyceride, cholesterol, low density lipoprotein, alanine aminotransferase, and aspartate aminotransferase (p>0.05) among treatments. Treatment C had a higher concentration of total protein and high density lipoprotein (p<0.05) than A and B groups. In addition, there was a trend that the globulin concentration of A group was lower than other treatments (p = 0.079). Results from this study suggest that increasing the level of concentrate from 30% to 50% exerted a positive effect on growth performance, rumen fermentation and blood metabolites in yaks.

Abstract
The heat shock transcription factor 1 gene (HSF1) plays a key role in the heat stress response. We previously found a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in the 3'-untranslated region (g.4693G>T) of HSF1 that was related to thermo tolerance in Chinese Holstein cattle through association analysis. However, it is not known whether other SNPs also affect thermo tolerance.In this study a novel SNP, g.1451G>T, was identified by DNA sequencing and genotyped using creating restriction site-polymerase chain reaction methodology. The g.1451G>T polymorphic site met Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (P > 0.05). Association analysis demonstrated that this SNP had no effect on thermo tolerance traits in Holstein cattle. Findings of the study compared to the analysis of g.4693 G>T further indicated that g.4693 G>T may play an important role in thermo tolerance, although the mechanism is not clear. RNA hybrid and Targetscan prediction showed that the minimum free energy hybridization of bta-miR-484 with HSF1 3'-UTR was -31.9 kcal/mol and g.4693 G>T was in the seed sequence of bovine HSF1 that binds to bta-miR-484. Analysis by Luciferase assay indicated that HSF1 expression was directly targeted by bta-miR-484 in HEK 293T cells, and the Rluc/luc ratio of wildtype (GG) was lower than that of the mutant (TT) (P < 0.05). These results suggest that g.4693 G>T affects binding of HSF1 to bta-miR-484.

Abstract
Spirometra erinaceieuropaei casein kinase I (SeCKI) was analyzed using bioinformatical methods to predict its structure and function based on the deduced amino acid sequence from full length cDNA sequence of SeCKI gene with online sites and software programs. The longest open reading frame contains 448 amino acids, 50 kDa and theoretical pI of 4.73, with a complete tubulin domain, a SMART tubulin_C domain and a low complexity region. SeCKI has no signal sequence and no transmembrane domain, but is predicted to be located extracellularly. The secondary structure of SeCKI contains 12 α-helixes, 11 β-strands and 22 coils. SeCKI had 19 potential antigenic epitopes and 25 HLA-I restricted epitopes. Based on phylogenetic analysis of SeCKI sequence, S. erinaceieuropaei has the closest evolutionary status with Hymenolepis microstoma. Information from this study could provide important insights into the identification of diagnostic antigens and molecular targets of anti-sparganum drugs.

Abstract
Zinc-finger, MYND-type containing 10 (ZMYND10), or more commonly called BLU, expression is frequently downregulated in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) and many other tumors due to promoter hypermethylation. Functional evidence shows that the BLU gene inhibits tumor growth in animal assays, but the detailed molecular mechanism responsible for this is still not well understood. In current studies, we find that 93.5% of early-stage primary NPC tumors show downregulated BLU expression. Using a PCR array, overexpression of the BLU gene was correlated to the angiogenesis network in NPC cells. Moreover, expression changes of the MMP family, VEGF and TSP1, were often detected in different stages of NPC, suggesting the possibility that BLU may be directly involved in the microenvironment and anti-angiogenic activity in NPC development. Compared with vector-alone control cells, BLU stable transfectants, derived from poorly-differentiated NPC HONE1 cells, suppress VEGF165, VEGF189 and TSP1 expression at both the RNA and protein levels, and significantly reduce the secreted VEGF protein in these cells, reflecting an unknown regulatory mechanism mediated by the BLU gene in NPC. Cells expressing BLU inhibited cellular invasion, migration and tube formation. These in vitro results were further confirmed by in vivo tumor suppression and a matrigel plug angiogenesis assay in nude mice. Tube-forming ability was clearly inhibited, when the BLU gene is expressed in these cells. Up to 70-90% of injected tumor cells expressing increased exogenous BLU underwent cell death in animal assays. Overexpressed BLU only inhibited VEGF165 expression in differentiated squamous NPC HK1 cells, but also showed an anti-angiogenic effect in the animal assay, revealing a complicated mechanism regulating angiogenesis and the microenvironment in different NPC cell lines. Results of these studies indicate that alteration of BLU gene expression influences anti-angiogenesis pathways and is important for the development of NPC.

Abstract
This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of dietary olive oil on growth performance, carcass parameters, serum characteristics, and fatty acid composition of breast and drumstick meat in broiler chickens. A total of 480 broilers were randomly allotted into three dietary treatments, including T (basal diet, 5% tallow), O1 (2% olive oil+3% tallow), and O2 (5% olive oil). During d 0 to 21, broilers fed the diet supplemented with 5% olive oil showed lower (p<0.05) body weight gain (BWG) and feed intake (FI) compared with those fed the T diet. Serum triglyceride concentration was reduced (p<0.05), while high density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol concentration was increased (p<0.05) in the O2 treatment group compared with the T and O1 treatment groups. The addition of olive oil to the diets induced a reduction (p<0.05) in the total saturated fatty acid (SFA) contents in breast and drumstick meat, and increased (p<0.05) the total unsaturated fatty acid (USFA) contents and USFA/SFA ratios. In conclusion, a diet with 5% olive oil could decrease BWG and FI of broilers during the starter period (wk 0 to 3), and cause an increase in the serum HDL-cholesterol level, while decreasing the serum triglyceride concentration. Furthermore, USFA level and USFA/SFA ratios in breast and drumstick meat were increased by dietary supplementation of 2 or 5% olive oil.

Abstract
This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of dietary vitamin levels and stocking densities on growth performance, nutrient digestibility, and blood characteristics in growing pigs. A 2×3 factorial (two vitamin levels, three regimens of stocking densities) arrangement was utilized with 96 pigs (23.10×0.95 kg initial body weight and 63 d of age) for 36 d. The pigs were allocated to pens with different stocking density (0.64, 0.48, and 0.38 m(2)/pig, respectively). The diets used in this study were a normal diet (based on NRC) and a high level of vitamin diet (2-fold higher than normal diet). The ADG and ADFI of pigs were decreased as the stocking density increased (p = 0.03 and p = 0.01, respectively). The G/F of pigs was 5% lower in the high vitamin treatment (p = 0.03) as compared with the control treatment. The apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of DM and N digestibility was negatively affected by the high level of vitamin in diets (p = 0.05 and p = 0.04, respectively). Moreover, a significant and negative effect on the ATTD of N was detected in the large groups (linear, p = 0.02). Blood cortisol concentration was increased with increasing stocking density (linear, p = 0.05), and was decreased by high level of vitamin (p = 0.04) at the end of this experiment. Stocking density also caused a linear reduction in WBC concentration (p = 0.05). Our data indicated that the principal effect of stocking density was not reliant on dietary vitamin levels. In conclusion, results indicated that doubling the vitamin supplementation did not improve the growth performance of pigs in high density. However, the blood cortisol concentration was decreased but the ATTD of N digestibility was impaired by high level of vitamin diet.

Abstract
The effects of dietary Coptis chinensis herb extract (CHE) on growth performance, blood characteristics, nutrient digestibility and meat quality of growing-finishing pigs were investigated in an 18-wk feeding trial. A total of 36 Landrace×Yorkshire-Duroc pigs with an initial body weight of 20±1.0 kg were randomly assigned to 3 dietary treatments with 6 replications per treatment and 2 pigs per pen. A maize-soybean meal-based diet was formulated as a control diet and other treatment diets were supplemented with 0.5, or 1 g CHE/kg, respectively. After the feeding period, meat samples were collected from those pigs that had reached the market BW. During the experimental periods, growth performance and apparent total tract digestibility of dry matter and nitrogen were unaffected (p>0.05) by the dietary supplementation of CHE. Plasma erythrocytes counts were increased (Linearly, p<0.05) in response to application of CHE at the end of the experiment. Moreover, pigs fed the CHE diets had better (p<0.05) meat color, pH and water holding capacity (WHC) than pigs fed the control diet. In conclusion, dietary supplementation with CHE could increase blood erythrocytes counts and improve meat quality in growing-finishing pigs but not improve growth performance.

Abstract
A total of 144 pigs ((Landrace×Yorkshire)×Duroc] with an average initial BW of 8.45±0.57 kg were used in a 5-wk growth trial. Pigs were randomly allocated to 4 treatments with 9 replications per pen in a randomized complex block design. Dietary treatments included: i) CON (basal diet), ii) ANT (CON+tylosin 1 g/kg), iii) H1 (CON+H. cordata 1 g/kg) and iv) T1 (CON+T. officinale 1 g/kg). In this study, pigs fed the ANT and T1 treatment had a higher (p<0.05) average daily gain (ADG) and gain:feed (G:F) ratio than those fed CON and H1 treatment. Dietary ANT and T1 treatment led to a higher energy digestibility than the CON group. No difference (p>0.05) was observed on the growth performance and apparent total tract digestibility with H1 supplementation compared with the CON treatment. The inclusion of ANT treatment led to a higher (p<0.05) lymphocyte concentration compared with the CON treatment. Dietary supplementation of herbs did not affect (p>0.05) the blood characteristics (white blood cell (WBC), red blood cell (RBC), IgG, lymphocyte). No difference was observed on (p<0.05) fecal microbial shedding (E. coli and lactobacillus) between ANT and CON groups. Treatments H1 and T1 reduced the fecal E. coli concentration compared with the CON treatment, whereas the fecal lactobacillus concentration was not affected by the herb supplementation (p>0.05). In conclusion, the inclusion of T. officinale (1 g/kg) increased growth performance, feed efficiency, energy digestibility similarly to the antibiotic treatment. Dietary supplementation of T. officinale and H. cordata (1 g/kg) reduced the fecal E. coli concentration in weaning pigs.

Abstract
In China, covering developing apple (Malus × domestica) fruit with paper bags is a standard production practice. The fruit are usually covered from May to October to exclude pests and rain-dispersed pathogens and reduce pesticide residue at harvest. From 2010 to 2012, a fruit spot disease was observed on bagged fruit and caused 1 to 30% annual yield losses in most orchards in Shandong Province. Affected fruit were covered with red-brown, sunken, circular lesions 2 to 20 mm in diameter with dark violet edges often surrounded by a red halo. In many cases, the lesion cracked and pinkish mycelium was observed within the cracks. Isolations were made from bagged fruit from 12 orchards in October 2010 to 2012. Fungal isolations were made onto potato dextrose agar (PDA) medium. Two strains were consistently obtained from isolates. Strain 1 produced conidia assembled in head. Conidia were ellipsoidal to ovoid and 2.1 to 7.5 × 1.1 to 3.0 μm. Colonies were whitish with some pink and powdery on PDA. String 2 produced conidia in a long chain. Conidia were spindle-shaped with apiculate at both ends and 2.1 to 6.6 × 1.3 to 3.8 μm. Colonies were whitish at the beginning and grayish later and powdery on PDA. To further confirm the identity of the isolated fungus, the large subunit (LSU), the small subunit (SSU), and the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequences of ribosomal DNA, and the β-tubulin gene (β-tubulin), were amplified and sequenced with the primers V9G/LR5, NS1/NS24, ITS1/ITS4, and Bt1a/Bt1b, respectively. LSU (GenBank Accession Nos. KJ194115 and KJ194116), SSU (KJ194117 and KJ194118), ITS (KF225143 and KF225144), and β-tubulin (KF225145 and KF225146) sequences didn't have any variation between the two strains sequenced. Phylogenetic analyses of each of the examined genes indicated a high similarity (>99%) with Acremonium sclerotigenum (CBS 384.65 HQ232129). Based on the sequence data and the morphology, we identified the fungus as A. sclerotigenum (1,2). To confirm pathogenicity, a spore suspension (1 × 104 conidia per ml) was made from each of the strains isolated. Strains were subsequently inoculated on to 10 mature apple fruit by wounding them to a depth of 2 mm with an acupuncture needle. Inoculation with sterile distilled water was included as a control. Prior to inoculation, all fruit were surface-sterilized with 75% alcohol. Lesions developed on fruit inoculated with the putative pathogen 10 days after incubation in >90% humidity chamber at 25°C. The fungi that were isolated from the infected fruit were identical to the inoculated strains. No lesions developed on the control fruit. This is the first report of brown spot disease caused by A. sclerotigenum in apple and in bagged fruit production. Given that brown spot disease symptoms were usually observed in September after long periods of rain, management efforts need to focus on protecting bagged fruit before harvest. References: (1) H. Abstract
This experiment was conducted to investigate the efficacy of Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bacillus subtilis, and Clostridium butyricum supplementation in broilers. A total of 400 one-day-old mixed sex Ross 308 broilers with an initial average BW of 46 ± 0.5 g were randomly allotted into 4 treatments with 5 replicate pens per treatment and 20 broilers in each pen for 35 d. Dietary treatments were (1) an antibiotic-free diet (CON), (2) CON + 5 mg/kg of avilamycin, (3) CON + 1 × 10(5) cfu of multistrain probiotics/kg of diet (P1), and (4) CON + 2 × 10(5) cfu of multistrain probiotics/kg of diet (P2). Broilers fed the P1 and P2 diets had greater BW gain than broilers fed the CON diet during d 22 to 35 (P = 0.01) and overall (P = 0.02). Feed conversion ratios in P1 and P2 were decreased (P = 0.03) compared with that in CON from d 22 to 35. Ileal digestibility of most essential amino acids, with the exception of His and Phe, were increased (P < 0.05) in P1 and P2 compared with CON. Serum IgA and IgM concentrations in P2 were higher (P < 0.05) than those in CON. The cecal Lactobacillus numbers were increased (P = 0.02), and the counts of Escherichia coli were decreased (P = 0.03) in P1 and P2 compared with CON. Dietary supplementation with multistrain probiotics decreased (P < 0.05) the excreta NH3 content compared with the CON. In conclusion, dietary supplementation with multistrain probiotics improved broiler growth performance, ileal amino acids digestibility, and humoral immunity. Furthermore, the probiotics decreased the cecal numbers of E. coli and decreased the NH3 content of excreta.

Abstract
Incoherent twin boundaries (ITBs) are widespread and play a crucial role in unidirectional deformation behavior of materials, however, the intrinsic role of individual ITB under cyclic loading remains elusive. Here we show the fatigue cracking behavior of Cu bicrystal with an ITB as its sole interface for the first time. The slip bands (SBs) could transfer through the ITB; meanwhile, the ITB could migrate with the motion of partial dislocations. Both the penetrability and mobility contribute to the higher fatigue cracking resistance of the ITB and hence the fatigue crack nucleates along the SBs preferentially. These new findings not only shed light on the fatigue cracking mechanisms of a penetrable boundary with direct evidence but also could provide important implications for future interfacial optimization of metallic materials.

Abstract
1. This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of dietary β-glucan and kefir (a fermented milk product) on growth performance, blood profiles, relative organ weight and meat quality in broilers. 2. A total of 375 day-of-hatch mixed sex ROSS 308 broilers (BW of 46 ± 0.1 g) were used in a 5-week experiment and randomly allotted to one of the following dietary treatments: (1) NC, basal diet; (2) PC, basal diet + 40 mg/kg of avilamycin; (3) B, NC + 0.1% β-glucan; (4) K, NC + 0.1% kefir; (5) BK, NC + 0.1% β-glucan + 0.1% kefir. 3. During weeks 0-3, broilers in B, K and BK treatments had higher body weight gain (BWG) than those in NC treatment. During weeks 4-5, BK treatment had a higher BWG than NC treatment. Overall, broilers given PC, K and BK diets had higher BWG than those given NC diet. The feed efficiency ratio (FCR) was improved by PC treatment. 4. Relative liver weight was increased by B treatment, whereas the relative weight of breast meat and gizzard was higher in BK group than that in NC group. Broilers given PC, B and BK diets had greater breast meat redness value and reduced drip loss at d 5 and d 7. The cooking loss was also reduced by B and BK treatments compared with NC treatment. 5. In conclusion, the results suggested that inclusion of 0.1% β-glucan and 0.1% kefir, either individually or combined, would improve growth performance and benefit meat quality in broiler chickens.

Abstract
Several MCM-41 materials were synthesized at different conditions by hydrothermal procedure using cheap and easily available industrial water glass as silica source. Fe doped manganese-based oxide/MCM-41 sorbents were prepared by a sol-gel method. The effects of loadings of metal oxide, Fe/Mn molar ratios over MCM-41 and reaction temperature on the performance of sorbent for hot coal gas desulfurization were investigated. Various techniques such as BET, XRD, XPS, LRS and HRTEM were used to characterize the sorbents. The result indicated Fe(3+) ions could occupy a position of Mn(3+) in cubic lattice of Mn2O3 and the (FexMn2-x)O3 solid solution is mainly active phase of sorbent. Moreover, the result of nine successive sulfurization-regeneration cycles of sorbent showed high sulfur adsorption capacity and endurable stability of FeMn4Ox/MCM-41 for H2S removal.

Abstract
Two experiments were conducted to determine an optimum Lys:calorie ratio (g of total dietary Lys/Mcal of DE) for growing barrows and gilts in cool and hot seasons in a commercial environment. In Exp. 1, 96 barrows and 96 gilts were randomly allocated in 1 of 4 dietary treatments (2.7, 3.0, 3.3, 3.6 g of Lys/Mcal of DE). Each treatment had 12 replicate pens with 4 pigs per pen. The experiment lasted for 34 d in the cool season (March 12th to April 15th). Diets were based on corn-wheat-soybean meal. Lys:calorie ratio were attained by adjusting the amount of corn and soybean and supplementation of crystalline Lys. Total Lys intake and available Lys intake were increased (p<.05) as dietary Lys:calorie ratio increased. The BUN concentration on d 34 for barrows, and BUN change for barrows and gilts linearly increased (p<0.05) in response to increasing dietary Lys:calorie ratio. For gilts, back fat was decreased and then increased (Quadratically, p<0.05) as increasing dietary lys:calorie ratio. Exp. 2 had a similar design as Exp. 1 with the exception that Exp. 2 was conducted in hot season (June 30th to September 11th) for 42 d. Diet of Exp. 2 was the same as Exp. 1. Total Lys intake and available Lys intake increased (p<0.05) as dietary Lys:calorie increased. On d 42, the BUN concentration increased (p<0.05) in response to the increasing dietary Lys:calorie ratio. In conclusion, dietary Lys:calorie ratio of 2.7 g of Lys/Mcal of DE could satisfy the requirement of 25 to 50 kg growing pigs. Increasing dietary Lys:calorie ratio could increase BUN concentration in growing pigs.

Abstract
A new destructive apple disease, causing black spots and necrotic lesions on leaves and defoliation on cvs. Gala and Golden Delicious (Malus × domestica Borkh.), was observed in August 2011 in Fengxian, Jiangsu Province, China. More than 90% of trees of those cultivars in the area were defoliated by the disease and almost no leaves were left on trees before harvest. The disease was similar to Glomerella leaf spot reported first in Brazil in 1988 (2) and in the United States in 1998 (1) on cvs. Gala and Golden Delicious. The initial symptom was small black lesions on leaves. Above 30°C, the lesions developed quickly and grew to 2 to 3 cm, with a blurred edge. Diseased leaves became dark and were shed. At lower temperatures, the black lesions stopped enlarging after 5 to 6 days and formed large necrotic spots with clear edges; these leaves gradually grew yellow and were shed. When incubated at 30°C and 100% relative humidity for 1 to 2 days, the black lesions produced a mass of saffron-yellow conidia. On fruit, the pathogen only caused circular, necrotic, sunken, red-bordered lesions 2 to 3 mm in diameter, which was different from bitter rot. Three monospored cultures were isolated from diseased leaves and new conidia were obtained from isolates. The colony, with abundant mycelium, was white but turned gray to black. Conidia were 12 to 17 × 5 to 7 μm, and were cylindrical with rounded ends. After germination, conidia formed appressoria, oval, or circular cells with black thick walls 7 to 12 × 5 to 7 um. Based on morphological characteristics, the pathogen was putatively identified as Glomerella cingulata. The conidia were inoculated in vitro on leaves of cvs. Gala and Fuji by dripping a suspension of about 104 conidia/ml of water onto upper leaf surfaces. Dark necrotic lesions were observed on all inoculated Gala leaves, which were similar to those observed in orchards, after 4 days incubation in a chamber at 30°C with 100% humidity. Only small black lesions, about 1 to 2 mm in diameter, were observed on Fuji leaves. No symptoms developed on leaves inoculated with distilled water. The internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of ribosomal DNA and part of the 18S and 28S ribosomal RNA of the three isolates were amplified with the universal primers ITS1 (5'-TCCGTAGGTGAACCTGCGG-3') and ITS4 (5'-CCTCCGCTTATTGATATGC-3'). The amplified ITS sequences confirmed that the three isolates belonged to the same species, with only one base pair variation among sequences. The nucleotide sequence of isolate 1 and 2 was deposited in GenBank (JN714400 and JN714401). BLAST analysis showed that the sequence had 99% homology with the sequence of G. cingulata (EU008836), the causal agent of Glomerella leaf spot. However, the sequence of isolate 1 had 100% homology with that of G. cingulata (HQ845103.1) isolated from walnut in Shandong, China, while the sequence of isolate 2 had 100% homology with that of G. cingulata (HM015004.1) isolated from sweet pepper in Taiwan. Results suggested the disease is Glomerella leaf spot and the causal agent is G. cingulata. The disease will eliminate sensitive apple cultivars, such as Gala, from wet, warm production areas if effective control measures are not developed within a few years. Abstract
Medicago sativa L. is one of the most important perennial forage crops and has been cultivated for more than 2,000 years in China. A previously unreported sprout wilt disease of M. sativa, affecting as much as 25% of the seedlings, was observed in northwest China (Gansu Province) in March 2011. First symptoms on the sprouts were dehydration and yellowing. Within 24 to 48 h, the sprouts stopped growing, wilted, turned brown, and bacteria began oozing from the material. Three symptomatic sprout samples collected from a grower with the wilt problem were processed for microbiological analysis. Bacteria isolated from symptomatic samples produced a pink, diffusible pigment in King's medium B and nutrient agar supplemented with glucose, sucrose, and maltose. The three isolates were negative for gram stain reaction, oxidase, production of hydrogen sulfide and indole, growth in KCN broth, arginine dihydrolase activity, hydrolysis of casein, hydrolysis of gelatin, and acid production from L-arabinose, dulcitol, glycerol, lyxose, and starch. In contrast, they were positive for catalase, nitrate reduction, Voges-Proskauer, hydrolysis of aesculin, acid production from D-ribose, maltose and sucrose, assimilation of adonitol, L-lactate, mannitol, Myo-inositol, erythritol, sorbitol, and sucrose, and growth in 5% NaCl at 36°C. The 16S rDNA of three isolates (Cp1, Cp2, and Cp3) was amplified using the 7F (5'-CAGAGTTTGATCCTGGCT-3') and 1540R (5'-AGGAGGTGATCCAGCCGCA-3') primers. The sequences for the 1,428-bp amplicon from the isolates were identical (GenBank Accession No. JN900058) and had 99% sequence identity with 16S rDNA of Erwinia persicinus strains (including the type strain LMG 11254 [GenBank Accession No. Z96086.1], GS 04 [GenBank Accession No. DQ365580.1], LPPA 373 [GenBank Accession No. AJ937837.1], LPPA 408 [GenBank Accession No. AM294946.1], LMG 2691 [GenBank Accession No. AJ001190.1], and HK 204 [GenBank Accession No. NR_026049.1]). The three isolates were also evaluated in pathogenicity tests. Bacterial suspensions (108 CFU/ml) were spray inoculated on 7-day-old M. sativa sprouts of cv. Algonquin. The inoculated sprouts were placed onto 2% water agar in petri dishes (five sprouts per 9-cm dish) with four dishes for each bacterial isolate and control. The dishes were sealed with Parafilm for 2 days and held in an incubator at 25°C with a 12-h photoperiod. Assays were repeated twice. Symptoms that developed within 7 days were similar to those originally observed, whereas symptoms did not occur on control sprouts sprayed with sterile distilled water. Bacteria sharing the characteristics of the inoculated isolates were recovered from symptomatic sprouts, hence fulfilling Koch's postulates. E. persicinus has been isolated previously from Phaseolus vulgaris (1), Pisum sativum (2), tomato, banana, and cucumber (3). Abstract
The tea polyphenol epigallocatechin-3-O-gallate (EGCG) displays some antidiabetic effects; however the mechanisms are incompletely understood. In the present study, the investigation of the effects of EGCG on insulin resistance was performed in rat L6 cells treated with dexamethasone. We found that dexamethasone increased Ser307 phosphorylation of insulin receptor substrate-1 (IRS-1) and reduced phosphorylation of AMPK and Akt. Furthermore, glucose uptake and glucose transporter (GLUT4) translocation were inhibited by dexamethasone. However, the treatment of EGCG improved insulin-stimulated glucose uptake by increasing GLUT4 translocation to plasma membrane. Furthermore, we also demonstrated these EGCG effects essentially depended on the AMPK and Akt activation. Together, our data suggested that EGCG inhibited dexamethasone-induced insulin resistance through AMPK and PI3K/Akt pathway.

Abstract
Increasing evidence indicates that reactive oxygen species (ROS) are involved in paclitaxel cytotoxicity. Modulating the oxidant–antioxidant status of tumour cells may increase the antitumour activity of paclitaxel. The cytoprotective roles of heat shock protein 27 (HSP27) include chaperoning cellular proteins, regulating apoptotic signalling and modulating oxidative stress. Immunohistochemical staining for HSP27 in human ovarian cancer specimens showed HSP27 was associated with aggressive malignant ovarian disease. Small interfering RNA (siRNA) was used to down-regulate HSP27 in human ovarian cancer cells (HO8910). Reduction of HSP27 expression increased the in vitro chemosensitivity of HO8910 cells to paclitaxel and increased paclitaxel-induced apoptosis and ROS production, although the ROS scavenger, N-acetyl-l-cysteine, partly offset the effects of HSP27 siRNA. Thus, gene knock-down of HSP27 offsets the role of this protein in resisting oxidant stress, thereby indirectly increasing the sensitivity of cells to paclitaxel. The siRNA-induced knock-down of HSP27 could be a novel and potent strategy to help overcome chemotherapeutic resistance to paclitaxel in epithelial ovarian cancer cells.
