Alkoxylated Fluoranthene-Fused [3.3.3]Propellanes: Facile Film Formation against High π-Core Content

Solid-state assembling modes are as crucial as the chemical structures of single molecules for real applications. In this work, solid-state structures and phase-transition temperatures are investigated for a series of fluoranthene-fused [3.3.3]propellanes consisting of a rigid three-dimensional (3D) π-core and varying lengths of alkoxy groups. Compounds in this series with n-butoxy or longer alkoxy groups take an amorphous state at room temperature. In these molecules, rotatable biaryl-type bonds are not incorporated and high D3h molecular symmetry is retained. Therefore, π-fused [3.3.3]propellanes present a unique platform for amorphous molecular materials with low ratios of flexible alkoxy atoms to rigid π-core ones.

Machine Learning-Assisted Survey on Charge Storage of MXenes in Aqueous Electrolytes

Pseudocapacitance is capable of both high power and energy densities owing to its fast chemical adsorption with substantial charge transfer. 2D transition-metal carbides/nitrides (MXenes) are an emerging class of pseudocapacitive electrode materials. However, the factors that dominate the physical and chemical properties of MXenes are intercorrelated with each other, giving rise to challenges in the quantitative assessment of their discriminating importance. In this perspective, literature data on the specific capacitance of MXene electrodes in aqueous electrolytes is comprehensively surveyed and analyzed using machine-learning techniques. The specific capacitance of MXene electrodes shows strong dependency on their interlayer spacing, where confined H2O in the interlayer space should play a key role in the charge storage mechanism. The electrochemical behavior of MXene electrodes is overviewed based on atomistic insights obtained from data-driven approaches.

Spin qubits of Cu(II) doped in Zn(II) metal-organic frameworks above microsecond phase memory time

With the aim of creating Cu(II) spin qubits in a rigid metal-organic framework (MOF), this work demonstrates a doping of 5 %, 2 %, 1 %, and 0.1 % mol of Cu(II) ions into a perovskite-type MOF [CH6 N3 ][ZnII (HCOO)3 ]. The presence of dopant Cu(II) sites are confirmed with anisotropic g-factors (gx =2.07, gy =2.12, and gz =2.44) in the S=1/2 system by experimentally and theoretically. Magnetic dynamics indicate the occurrence of a slow magnetic relaxation via the direct and Raman processes under an applied field, with a relaxation time (τ) of 3.5 ms (5 % Cu), 9.2 ms (2 % Cu), and 15 ms (1 % Cu) at 1.8 K. Furthermore, pulse-ESR spectroscopy reveals spin qubit properties with a spin-spin relaxation (phase memory) time (T2 ) of 0.21 μs (2 %Cu), 0.39 μs (1 %Cu), and 3.0 μs (0.1 %Cu) at 10 K as well as Rabi oscillation between MS =±1/2 spin sublevels. T2 above microsecond is achieved for the first time in the Cu(II)-doped MOFs. It can be observed at submicrosecond around 50 K. These spin relaxations are very sensitive to the magnetic dipole interactions relating with cross-relaxation between the Cu(II) sites and can be tuned by adjusting the dopant concentration.

Reversible Boron-Insertion into Aromatic C-C Bonds

Formation of borabicyclo[3.2.0]heptadiene derivatives was achieved via boron-insertion into aromatic C-C bonds in the photo-promoted skeletal rearrangement reaction of triarylboranes bearing an ortho-phosphino substituent (ambiphilic phosphine-boranes). The borabicyclo[3.2.0]heptadiene derivatives were fully characterized by NMR and X-ray analyses. The dearomatized products were demonstrated to undergo the reverse reaction in the dark at room temperature, realizing photochemical and thermal interconversion between triarylboranes and boron-doped bicyclic systems. Experimental and theoretical studies revealed that sequential two electrocyclic reactions involving E/Z-isomerization of an alkene moiety proceed via a highly strained trans-borepin intermediate.

A polyacrylamide gel containing an engineered hexameric hemoprotein as a cross-linking unit toward redox-responsive materials

Hydrogels containing synthetic polymers and supramolecular cross-linking units are expected to exhibit unique functions and properties. The heme-heme pocket interaction in hemeproteins may be useful for development of a cross-linking unit because heme binding depends on the redox states of the iron center. In this work, hexameric tyrosine-coordinated hemoprotein (HTHP) is employed as a cross-linking unit in a polyacrylamide gel to create redox-responsive hydrogels. First, redox-dependent stability of the heme-heme pocket interaction in HTHP was evaluated, and it was found that the heme affinity dramatically decreases in the Fe(ii) state. Second, the polymerization of acrylamide and engineered HTHP possessing acryloyl group-tethering heme moieties provided a polyacrylamide gel containing HTHP as a cross-linking unit. A reduction-triggered gel-sol transition in the presence of apomyoglobin was observed. Furthermore, the mechanical properties of the gels containing the engineered HTHP and methylene bisacrylamide were evaluated by a tensile test, and the Young's modulus value was determined to be 14 kPa, which is higher than that of the control gel containing only methylene bisacrylamide (8.5 kPa). Compression tests of the gels revealed redox-responsive mechanical behavior, resulting in a decrease in the compressive modulus upon the addition of a reductant. This behavior is qualitatively consistent with the redox-responsive heme binding of HTHP in a solution state. This finding is expected to contribute to the development of redox-responsive materials for biomedical and biological applications.

Raman Fingerprints of SARS-CoV-2 Omicron Subvariants: Molecular Roots of Virological Characteristics and Evolutionary Directions

The latest RNA genomic mutation of SARS-CoV-2 virus, termed the Omicron variant, has generated a stream of highly contagious and antibody-resistant strains, which in turn led to classifying Omicron as a variant of concern. We systematically collected Raman spectra from six Omicron subvariants available in Japan (i.e., BA.1.18, BA.2, BA.4, BA.5, XE, and BA.2.75) and applied machine-learning algorithms to decrypt their structural characteristics at the molecular scale. Unique Raman fingerprints of sulfur-containing amino acid rotamers, RNA purines and pyrimidines, tyrosine phenol ring configurations, and secondary protein structures clearly differentiated the six Omicron subvariants. These spectral characteristics, which were linked to infectiousness, transmissibility, and propensity for immune evasion, revealed evolutionary motifs to be compared with the outputs of genomic studies. The availability of a Raman "metabolomic snapshot", which was then translated into a barcode to enable a prompt subvariant identification, opened the way to rationalize in real-time SARS-CoV-2 activity and variability. As a proof of concept, we applied the Raman barcode procedure to a nasal swab sample retrieved from a SARS-CoV-2 patient and identified its Omicron subvariant by coupling a commercially available magnetic bead technology with our newly developed Raman analyses.

Magnetization Control of Zero-Field Intrinsic Superconducting Diode Effect

The superconducting diode effect (SDE), which causes a superconducting state in one direction and a normal-conducting state in another, has significant potential for developing ultralow power consumption circuits and non-volatile memory. However, the practical control of the SDE necessities the precise tuning of current, temperature, magnetic field, or magnetism. Therefore, the mechanisms of the SDE must be understood to develop novel materials and devices capable of realizing the SDE under more controlled and robust conditions. This study demonstrates an intrinsic zero-field SDE with an efficiency of up to 40% in Fe/Pt-inserted non-centrosymmetric Nb/V/Ta superconducting artificial superlattices. The polarity and magnitude of the zero-field SDE are controllable by the direction of magnetization, indicating that the effective exchange field acts on Cooper pairs. Furthermore, the first-principles calculation indicates that the SDE can be enhanced by an asymmetric configuration of proximity induced magnetic moments in superconducting layers, which induces a magnetic toroidal moment. This study has important implications regarding the development of novel materials and devices that can effectively control the SDE. Moreover, the magnetization control of the SDE is expected to aid in the designing of superconducting quantum devices and establishing a material platform for topological superconductors.
