Effects of supplemental irrigation on grain yield and water and nitrogen efficiencies of winter wheat in the North China Plain

BACKGROUND

Aiming at unbalanced coordination of irrigation and fertilization of winter wheat in the eastern North China Plain, this study investigated the effect of fertigation on wheat grain yield, grain quality, and water use efficiency (WUE) and nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) in seven irrigation and nitrogen (N) fertilization treatments. Under the field conditions, the traditional irrigation and fertilization method (total N amount of 240 kg ha-1 , application of 90 kg ha-1 at sowing irrigation at jointing and anthesis, with topdressing N of 150 kg ha-1 at jointing) was used as the control (CK). There were six fertigation treatments to compare with CK. For the fertigation treatments, the total amount of N application was set to 180 kg ha-1 and 90 kg ha-1 was applied at sowing and the remaining N fertilizer was applied through fertigation. The fertigation treatments included the combination of three fertigation frequencies (S2: at jointing and anthesis; S3: at jointing, anthesis, and filling; S4: at jointing, booting, anthesis, and filling) and two soil water replenishment depths (M1: 0-10 cm; M2: 0-20 cm). The six treatments were S4M2, S4M1, S3M2, S3M1, S2M2, and S2M1.

RESULT

Compared with CK, three and four irrigations (S3 and S4) maintained higher soil and plant analyzer development value and photosynthetic rate after anthesis. These treatments increased soil water extraction while reducing crop water consumption during the whole growing season, promoted the assimilation and translocation of dry matter into the grain after anthesis, and increased the 1000-grain weight. These fertigation treatments also significantly increased WUE and NUE. At the same time, the high grain protein content and grain protein yield were maintained. Compared with the CK, high wheat yield was maintained by S3M1 (drip irrigation fertilizer at the jointing, anthesis, and filling, and the depth of the moisture replenishment is 10 cm). This fertigation treatment significantly increased yield by 7.6%, WUE by 30%, NUE by 41.4%, and partial factor productivity from applied N by 25.8%; grain yield, grain protein content, and grain protein yield also performed well.

CONCLUSION

Consequently, S3M1 treatment was suggested to be a good practice for reducing irrigation water and N input in the eastern North China Plain. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Spatial distribution and risk assessment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in soils from contaminated sites in Eastern China

A total of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were measured in 28 soil column samples from two contaminated industrial sites in Eastern China. The total concentration of 16 PAHs (∑PAHs) in the surface soil (0-20 cm) was measured up to 52,600 ng/g (dry weight basis) with a remarkable spatial difference in the studied contaminated sites. The concentrations of the ∑PAHs in soils decreased with the increase in soil depth (0-10 m). The surface and subsurface soil presented a tenfold higher concentration than the soil with depth greater than 4 m. Additionally, the vertical migration tendency of the PAHs was found to be correlated significantly with their hydrophobicity (R2 = 0.79, P < 0.01). Naphthalene (with lowest octanol-water partition coefficient among the studied PAHs) showed the greatest average soil depth at which its peak concentration occurred. Furthermore, risk quotient analysis by using benzo[a]pyrene as reference compound showed that 71.4% of the samples exhibited high ecological risk for soil. Moreover, the total carcinogenic risk of the PAHs in the surface soil samples was assessed at 5.61 × 10-5-1.28 × 10-4 and 4.41 × 10-6-9.43 × 10-5 for male and female workers, respectively, in which 67.9%-71.4% of the samples showed potential risk. Generally, these results suggest a further consideration of ecological and health risks associated with PAHs in contaminated sites in Eastern China.

Identification of a circRNA/miRNA/mRNA ceRNA Network as a Cell Cycle-Related Regulator for Chronic Sinusitis with Nasal Polyps

Purpose

To explore the mechanisms by which circRNA/miRNA/mRNA competitive endogenous RNAs (ceRNA) networks regulate CRSwNP.

Methods

The expression profiles of circRNAs, miRNAs, and mRNAs from patients with CRSwNP and control subjects were acquired from the Gene Expression Omnibus database. The circRNA/miRNA/mRNA ceRNA network was constructed based on the predicted circRNA–miRNA interactions and miRNA–mRNA interactions. Hub-mRNAs were screened by protein–protein interaction network analysis and Cytoscape molecular complex detection. The expression of factors in tissue and in hsa_circ_0031594 siRNA transfection cells was verified by RT-qPCR and the association between them was revealed by Spearman correlation analysis. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis was performed with the pROC R package.

Results

The differential expression of 5423 circRNAs, 415 miRNAs, and 3673 mRNAs was identified in CRSwNP subjects compared to control subjects. Among these, 9 circRNAs, 39 miRNAs, and 78 mRNAs were screened to construct a ceRNA network. Ultimately, a subnetwork including circRNA hsa_circ_0031594, hsa-miR-1260b, hsa-miR-6507-5p, NCAPG2, RACGAP1, CHEK1 and PRC1 was screened out. RT-qPCR validated that the expression of hsa_circ_0031594, NCAPG2, PRC1 was significantly increased, and hsa-miR-1260b and hsa-miR-6507-5p were expressed significantly less in patients with CRSwNP than in control subjects. In addition, the AUCs of hsa_circ_0031594, hsa-miR-1260b, hsa-miR-6507-5p, NCAPG2, and PRC1 to discriminate CRSwNP patients were 0.995, 0.842, 0.862, 0.765, and 0.816. Spearman correlation showed that the expression of hsa_circ_0031594 was negatively correlated with hsa-miR-1260b and hsa-miR-6507-5p, and positively correlated with NCAPG2 and PRC1. In human nasal epithelial cell (HNEpC) line, knocking down hsa_circ_0031594 could increase the expression of hsa-miR-1260b and hsa-miR-6507-5p, and reduce the expression of NCAPG2 and PRC1.

Conclusion

CeRNA networks including hsa_circ_0031594, hsa-miR-1260b, and NCAPG2, and hsa_circ_0031594, hsa-miR-6507-5p, and PRC1 may be key regulators for CRSwNP occurrence, and may be potential targets for the pathogenesis and treatment development of CRSwNP.
