Bioremediation of hazardous pollutants from agricultural soils: A sustainable approach for waste management towards urban sustainability

Soil contamination is perhaps the most hazardous issue all over the world; these emerging pollutants ought to be treated to confirm the safety of our living environment. Fast industrialization and anthropogenic exercises have resulted in different ecological contamination and caused serious dangerous health effects to humans and animals. Agro wastes are exceptionally directed because of their high biodegradability. Effluents from the agro-industry are a possibly high environmental risk that requires suitable, low-cost, and extensive treatment. Soil treatment using a bioremediation method is considered an eco-accommodating and reasonable strategy for removing toxic pollutants from agricultural fields. The present review was led to survey bioremediation treatability of agro soil by microbes, decide functional consequences for microbial performance and assess potential systems to diminish over potentials. The presence of hazardous pollutants in agricultural soil and sources, and toxic health effects on humans has been addressed in this review. The present review emphasizes an outline of bioremediation for the effective removal of toxic contaminants in the agro field. In addition, factors influencing recent advancements in the bioremediation process have been discussed. The review further highlights the roles and mechanisms of micro-organisms in the bioremediation of agricultural fields.

Study on the physical and chemical composition of agro wastes for the production of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural

Treated sludge, goat manure, sugarcane bagasse, empty fruit bunches of oil palm (EFBP) and dry leaves are agro wastes that have high potential for use as feedstocks for the production of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF). The focus of this study is to investigate the production of 5-HMF from agro wastes via co-hydrothermal (CHT) treatment and extraction. Present study include examine on agro waste's physical and chemical properties and also their thermal degradation behaviour. The analysis of the bio-oil products is conducted by FTIR and GC-MS. Co-hydrothermal experiments were conducted at a temperature of 300°C with an experimental time of 15min, followed by alcohol extraction. Highest carbon and hydrogen content are 45.94% and 6.49% (dry leaves) with maximum high heating value 18.39MJ/kg (dry leaves) and fix carbon value 6.60 (goat manure). Through CHT about 39% 5-HMF, 22.97% carboxylic acids, 0.97% of aromatic and 0.73% aldehyde obtained.

Cultivation of oyster mushroom Pleurotus ostreatus on date-palm leaves mixed with other agro-wastes in Saudi Arabia

Promoting the use of agricultural waste is one of the newly prepared water and environment friendly agriculture strategies in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). The objective of this research was to study the efficiency of cultivating oyster mushroom (Pleurotus ostreatus) on date palm wastes mixed with other agricultural wastes available in KSA. Four agricultural wastes were mixed with date palm leaves at different ratios, with two supplements and three spawn rates were used. Wheat straw mixed with date palm at ratio of 25 (date palm): 75 (agro-waste) showed the best results in most of the parameters measured. Corn meal was superior over wheat bran as a supplement in all treatments. Parameter values increased with the increase of the spawn rate of P. ostreatus. Treatments with date palm leave wastes contained higher carbohydrates and fibers. No significant differences were found among the fruiting bodies produced on the different agro-wastes studied for the different proximates analyzed. Analyses of metal concentration showed that potassium was the highest in all the treatments tested followed by Na, Mg, Ca, and Zn. This is the first study that reported the success of growing oyster mushroom on date palm leaf wastes mixed with other agro-wastes obtainable in KSA.
