Pharmaceutical brochures in Lebanon: do they meet WHO recommendations?

BACKGROUND

Drug promoting brochures can influence physicians prescription patterns. The validity of the info presented in these brochures is of major importance. World Health Organization (WHO) issued criteria to guarantee validity, equity and ethical presentation of data in medical brochures. This study aims to evaluate the quality and the validity of information presented in the pharmaceutical brochures distributed among family physicians in Lebanon.

METHODS

Pharmaceutical brochures were randomly collected at the family medicine center in Hôtel Dieu de France hospital in Beirut - Lebanon. These brochures were evaluated in reference to the WHO ethical criteria for medicinal drug promotion and on guidelines for quality assurance of the graphs, references, texts and illustrations.

RESULTS

Among the 60 brochures collected, only 4 fulfilled all the WHO ethical criteria, and 24 presented less than half the required criteria. Information concerning the drug safety are the least mentioned. Only 11.8% of the presented graphs are based on studies of high methodological level. Half of the brochures presented necessary information to identify studies references which are not always retrievable. Texts present mainly brand names instead of generic names and emphasize on information reflecting the drug efficacy.

CONCLUSION

The pharmaceutical brochures in this study presented incomplete or invalid information. Prescribing physicians should be aware of the claims found in the brochures distributed by pharmaceutical companies and should be familiar with the principles of the evidence-based medicine to be able to critically appraise the validity of the reference studies and avoid the pitfalls in graphs reading.

An Assessment of Health Information Resource Center and Supportive Program Needs

Objective:

No practical method or assessment tool for identifying patients' and their families' health information resource needs in a resource center exists. We sought to assess the health information and resource preferences of patients and their families to guide the planning of a health information resource center (HIRC).

Methods:

A needs assessment was conducted using convenience sample of patients and families drawn from the National Cancer Centre in Singapore. A survey was conducted to gather data from April 23, 2018, to May 11, 2018, at the Specialist Oncology Clinics (SOCs) and the Ambulatory Treatment Unit.

Results:

A total of 778 surveys were analyzed, and the majority of the respondents were Chinese (79.8%). There were 449 (57.7%) patients and 317 (40.7%) family members. Among the 778 respondents, the overall top item chosen for facilities, resources, and equipment were a quiet and comfortable area for reading and reflection (77.2%), information about education and support services offered by the center (71.6%), and computers with internet access (63.6%), respectively. The overall top three services needed in the resource center were advice on useful resources (70.6%); announcements on newly received materials, programs, and support services (64.8%); and resource personnel to assist with identifying materials/navigating through resources (53.2%). Written education pamphlets/brochures were rated as the most useful material (74.6%), followed by consumer health books (74.2%) and newsletter (59.6%). The top overall three supportive programs required were nutrition talks and cooking demonstrations (76.7%), counseling (individual, couples, family, and bereavement) (74.3%), and exercise (e.g., Tai Chi, yoga) (68.5%).

Conclusions:

The findings obtained from this assessment provide guidance to the development of a user-friendly, patient- and family-centric HIRC.

Readability assessment of American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons patient brochures with suggestions for improvement

Background

Many Americans have limited literacy skills, and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) suggests patient educational material be written below the 8th grade level. Many orthopedic organizations provide print material for patients, but whether these documents are written at an appropriate reading level is not clear. This study assessed the readability of patient education brochures provided by the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES).

Materials and Methods

In May 2017, 6 ASES patient education brochures were analyzed using readability software. The reading level was calculated for each brochure using 9 different tests. The mean reading level for each article was compared with the NIH-recommended 8th grade level using 2-tailed, 1-sample t tests assuming unequal variances.

Results

For each of the 9 tests, the mean reading level was higher than the NIH-recommended 8th grade (test, grade level): Automated Readability Index, 14.1 (P < .05); Coleman-Liau, 14.2 (P < .05); New Dale-Chall, 13.2 (P < .05); Flesch-Kincaid, 13.7 (P < .05); FORCAST, 11.8 (P < .05); Fry, 15.8 (P < .05); Gunning Fog, 16.5 (P < .05); Raygor Estimate, 15.4 (P < .05); and Simple Measure of Gobbledygook (SMOG), 15.1 (P < .05).

Conclusions

The ASES patient education brochures are written well above the NIH-recommended 8th grade reading level. These findings are similar to other investigations concerning orthopedic patient education material. Supplementary brochures and websites could be a useful source of information, particularly for patients who are deterred from asking questions in the office. Printed material designed for patient education should be edited to a more reasonable reading level. Further review of patient education materials is warranted.

Evaluating the reliability and accuracy of the promotional brochures for the generic pharmaceutical companies in Iraq using World Health Organization guidelines

BACKGROUND

Pharmaceutical industries worldwide are heavily involved in aggressive drug promotions. Physician targeted promotion through medical representatives is one of the most common tactic for drug promotion by pharmaceutical drug companies. WHO states that medical representatives to work in an ethical way should make available to prescribers and dispensers complete and unbiased information for each product discussed; therefore this study aimed to evaluate the ethics in the medical brochures of generic pharmaceutical companies that are given through medical representatives to physicians in Iraq.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

An observational, cross-sectional study was conducted in Iraq - Baghdad from February to April 2014. Promotional drug brochures were collected mainly from pharmaceutical exhibition during attendance of medical conferences that were sponsored by generic pharmaceutical companies. Evaluation of each brochure was based primarily on WHO criteria for ethical medicinal drug promotion. The availability of emotional pictures in each brochure was also examined. Furthermore, references were checked to find their retrievability, source, and authenticity of presentations.

RESULTS

Most medical brochures were for antibiotics, and drugs for cardiovascular diseases. All brochures mention drug name, with its active ingredient and indication, but there is a significant absence for drug interaction, while drug side effects and contraindications if present were written in a small font. Emotional picture presented in 70% of brochures. Reference citation was present in 72% of brochures, however only 75% of references in these brochures were correct.

CONCLUSIONS

The information that is provided in medical brochures is biased and mainly persuasive since it is mainly focusing on the positive aspect of drug therapy.
