Abstract
Low levels of physical activity (PA) are reported in South Asian pregnant women. This scoping review summarizes culturally tailored strategies in prenatal PA studies for South Asian women and identifies barriers and facilitators. A search strategy was developed with the keywords "Physical Activity" AND Pregnant AND "South Asian" and was carried out on Medline, SportDiscus, EMBASE, Web of Science and Proquest Theses and Dissertations. Primary research studies were included. Forty-six studies were included of which 40 were from South Asian countries. No interventions were identified outside of South Asian countries. Offering material in different languages was the most common tailoring strategy. Reported barriers were possible social norms favouring inactivity, lack of awareness on safe exercises, and physical symptoms (e.g., fatigue). Facilitators included social support and relief from physical symptoms. Future PA interventions for South Asian pregnant women should account for population-specific barriers and facilitators to increase PA initiation and maintenance.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Community-based culturally tailored education (CBCTE) programs for chronic diseases may reduce health disparities; however, a synthesis across chronic diseases is lacking. We explored (1) the characteristics and outcomes of CBCTE programs and (2) which strategies for culturally appropriate interventions have been used in CBCTE programs, and how they have been implemented. METHODS A systematic review was conducted by searching three databases to identify empirical full-text literature on CBCTE programs for Black communities with cardiovascular disease, hypertension, diabetes, or stroke. Studies were screened in duplicate, then data regarding study characteristics, participants, intervention, and outcomes were extracted and analyzed. Cultural tailoring strategies within programs were categorized using Kreuter and colleagues' framework. RESULTS Of the 74 studies, most were conducted in the USA (97%) and delivered in one site (53%; e.g., church/home). CBCTE programs targeted diabetes (65%), hypertension (30%), diabetes and hypertension (1%), cardiovascular disease (3%), and stroke (1%). Reported program benefits included physiological, medication-related, physical activity, and literacy. Cultural tailoring strategies included peripheral (targeted Black communities), constituent-involving (e.g., community informed), evidential (e.g., integrated community resources), linguistic (e.g., delivered in community's dialect/accent), and sociocultural (e.g., integrated community members' religious practices). CONCLUSIONS CBCTE programs may have beneficial outcomes, but a small sample size limited several. The strategies identified can be adopted by programs seeking to culturally tailor. Future interventions should clearly describe community members' roles/involvement and deliver programs in multiple locations to broaden reach. TRIAL REGISTRATION PROSPERO CRD42021245772.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Stroke service disparities experienced by individuals of African descent highlight the need to optimize services. While qualitative studies have explored participants' unique experiences and service needs, a comprehensive synthesis is lacking. To address current knowledge gaps, this review aimed to synthesize existing literature on the experiences of individuals of African descent impacted by a stroke living in high-income economy countries in terms of stroke prevention, management, and care. METHODS A qualitative meta-synthesis incorporating a meta-study approach was conducted to obtain comprehensive and interpretive insights on the study topic. Four databases were searched to identify qualitative English-language studies published in the year 2022 or earlier on the experiences of adults of African descent who were at risk or impacted by a stroke and living in high-income economy countries. Study methods, theory, and data were analyzed using descriptive and interpretive analyses. RESULTS Thirty-seven studies met our inclusion criteria, including 29 journal articles and 8 dissertations. Multiple authors reported recruitment as a key challenge in study conduct. Multiple existing theories and frameworks of health behaviours, beliefs, self-efficacy, race, and family structure informed research positionality, questions, and analysis across studies. Participant experiences were categorized as (1) engagement in stroke prevention activities and responses to stroke symptoms, (2) self-management and self-identity after stroke, and (3) stroke care experiences. CONCLUSIONS This study synthesizes the experiences and needs of individuals of African descent impacted by stroke. Findings can help tailor stroke interventions across the stroke care continuum, as they suggest the need for intersectional and culturally humble care approaches.

Abstract
Purpose– The purpose of the current study is to conduct a systematic review of peer-reviewed work on culturally tailored interventions for alcohol and drug use in Indigenous adults in North America. Substance use has been reported as a health concern for many Indigenous communities. Indigenous groups experienced the highest drug overdose death rates in 2015, the largest percentage increase in the number of deaths over time from 1999 to 2015 compared to any other racial group. However, few Indigenous individuals report participating in treatment for alcohol or drug use, which may reflect the limited engagement that Indigenous groups have with treatment options that are accessible, effective and culturally integrative. Design/methodology/approach– Electronic searches were conducted from 2000 to April 21, 2021, using PsycINFO, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, MEDLINE and PubMed. Two reviewers classified abstracts for study inclusion, resulting in 18 studies. Findings– Most studies were conducted in the USA (89%). Interventions were largely implemented in Tribal/rural settings (61%), with a minority implemented in both Tribal and urban contexts (11%). Study samples ranged from 4 to 742 clients. Interventions were most often conducted in residential treatment settings (39%). Only one (6%) intervention focused on opioid use among Indigenous people. Most interventions addressed the use of both drugs and alcohol (72%), with only three (17%) interventions specifically intended to reduce alcohol use. Originality/value– The results of this research lend insight into the characteristics of culturally integrative treatment options for Indigenous groups and highlight the need for increased investment in research related to culturally tailored treatment across the diverse landscape of Indigenous populations.

Abstract
Wide-reaching health promotion interventions are needed in influential, accessible community settings to address African American (AA) diabetes and CVD disparities. Most AAs are overweight/obese, which is a primary clinical risk factor for diabetes/CVD. Using a faith-community-engaged approach, this study examined feasibility and outcomes of Project Faith Influencing Transformation (FIT), a diabetes/CVD screening, prevention, and linkage to care pilot intervention to increase weight loss in AA church-populations at 8 months. Six churches were matched and randomized to multilevel FIT intervention or standard education control arms. Key multilevel religiously tailored FIT intervention components included: (a) individual self-help materials (e.g., risk checklists, pledge cards); (b) YMCA-facilitated weekly group Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) weight loss classes; (c) church service activities (e.g., sermons, responsive readings); and (d) church-community text/voice messages to promote healthy eating and physical activity. Health screenings (e.g., weight, blood pressure, blood glucose) were held during church services to identify participants with diabetes/CVD risks and refer them to their church's DPP class and linkage to care services. Participants (N = 352 church members and community members using churches' outreach ministries) were primarily female (67%) and overweight/obese (87%). Overall, FIT intervention participants were significantly more likely to achieve a > 5 lb weight loss (OR = 1.6; CI = 1.24, 2.01) than controls. Odds of intervention FIT-DPP participants achieving a > 5 lb weight loss were 3.6 times more than controls (p < .07). Exposure to sermons, text/email messages, brochures, commitment cards, and posters was significantly related to > 5 lb. weight loss. AA churches can feasibly assist in increasing reach and impact of diabetes/CVD risk reduction interventions with intensive weight loss components among at risk AA church-populations.

Abstract
Asian Indians (AIs) are a growing population in the United States (US) with increased cancer incidence and mortality. However, screening rates among this population are low, and the population has been underrepresented in clinical research. This pilot study aims to address gaps in the literature in order to understand if a culturally tailored educational intervention will improve knowledge, risk perceptions, and awareness of cancer risk assessments among AIs. We delivered an educational intervention comprised of culturally tailored case studies describing risk factors for developing cancer in both males and females. We assessed knowledge gaps about cancer risk and genetic testing, cancer risk perceptions, and willingness to participate in medical research studies, pre- and post-intervention. Among 23 participants, knowledge of genetic testing use and screening recommendations significantly improved post-intervention, with increased willingness to discuss cancer with family members, participate in medical research, and undergo genetic testing for cancer risk assessment. However, findings at the 1-month follow-up time did not show significant changes, except for one knowledge item. Culturally tailored educational interventions, delivered in a community setting, can influence knowledge and risk perceptions about cancer risk and genetics among AIs. Our findings lay the groundwork to continue educational efforts in the area of cancer risk and genetic testing in the AI population, a growing population that has been understudied in the US.

Abstract
Having an Advance Directive (AD) can help to guide medical decision-making. Asian Americans (AA) are less likely than White Americans to complete an AD. This pilot study investigated the feasibility and efficacy of a church-based intervention to increase knowledge and behavior change related to AD among Chinese and Vietnamese Americans. This study utilized a single group pre- and post-intervention design with 174 participants from 4 churches. Domain assessed: demographics; AD-related knowledge, beliefs, attitudes, and intentions; AD completion; and conversations with a healthcare proxy. Data were analyzed using Chi square and multiple logistic regression techniques. We observed significant increases in participants' AD-related knowledge, intentions, and a gain in supportive beliefs and attitudes about AD, resulting in 71.8 % AD completion, and 25.0 % having had a proxy conversation. Providing culturally-tailored intervention and step-by-step guidance can help to achieve significant changes in AD related knowledge and behavior in AA church goers.

Abstract
Background Smoking prevalence rates among the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) population are significantly higher than the general population. However, there is limited research on smoking cessation treatments in this group, particularly on culturally targeted interventions. Moreover, there are few interventions that address culturally specific psychosocial variables (e.g., minority stress) that may influence outcomes. This paper describes the protocol for a comparative effectiveness trial testing an evidence-based smoking cessation program, Courage to Quit, against a culturally tailored version for LGBT smokers, and examines the role of culturally specific psychosocial variables on cessation outcomes. Methods/Design To examine the effectiveness of a culturally targeted versus standard smoking cessation intervention, the study utilizes a 2-arm block, randomized, control trial (RCT) design. Adult LGBT participants (n = 400) are randomized to one of the two programs each consisting of a six-session group program delivered in a community center and an eight week supply of the transdermal nicotine patch. Four individualized telephone counseling sessions occur at weeks 2, 5, 7, and 9, at times of greatest risk for relapse. Study outcome measures are collected at baseline, and 1, 3, 6, and 12 months post quit date. Primary outcomes are expired air carbon monoxide verified 7-day point-prevalence quit rates at each measurement period. Secondary outcomes assess changes in cravings, withdrawal symptoms, smoking cessation self-efficacy, and treatment adherence. Additionally, study staff examines the role of culturally specific psychosocial variables on cessation outcomes using path analysis. Discussion Determining the efficacy of culturally specific versus standard evidence based approaches to smoking cessation is a critical issue facing the field today. This study provides a model for the development and implementation of a culturally tailored smoking cessation intervention for LGBT participants and addresses a gap in the field by examining the role of culturally psychosocial variables associated with cessation outcomes. Abstract
Diabetes education for ethnic minorities should address variations in values underlying motivations, preferences, and behaviors of individuals within an ethnic group. This paper describes the development and implementation of a culturally tailored diabetes intervention for Puerto Rican Americans that can be delivered by a health care paraprofessional and implemented in routine clinical care. We describe a formative process, including interviews with providers, focus groups with patients and a series of multidisciplinary collaborative workshops used to inform intervention content. We highlight the intervention components and link them to a well-validated health behavior change model. Finally, we present support for the intervention's clinical effects, feasibility, and acceptability and conclude with implications and recommendations for practice. Lessons learned from this process should guide future educational efforts in routine clinical care.
