Abstract
BACKGROUND Schistosomiasis is a water-based parasitic disease that affects humans, livestock and wild animals. While considerable resources are dedicated to the surveillance, disease mapping, control and elimination of human schistosomiasis, this is not the case for livestock schistosomiasis. Indeed, there are important data and knowledge gaps concerning the species present, population genetic diversity, infection prevalence, morbidity and economic impact. This study aimed to identify circulating schistosome species in cattle across Côte d'Ivoire and to investigate their population diversity and structuring. METHODS Overall, 400 adult schistosomes were collected from slaughtered cattle at six sites across Côte d'Ivoire. Additionally, 114 miracidia were collected from live cattle at one site: Ferkessédougou, in the northern part of Côte d'Ivoire. DNA from all specimens was extracted and the cox1 and ITS1/2 regions amplified and analysed to confirm species. The genetic diversity and structuring of the schistosome populations were investigated using 12 microsatellite markers. RESULTS All adult schistosomes and miracidia presented Schistosoma bovis mitochondrial cox1 profile. Nuclear ITS1/2 data were obtained from 101 adult schistosomes and four miracidia, all of which presented an S. bovis profile. Genetic diversity indices revealed a deficiency of heterozygotes and signals of inbreeding across all sites, while structure analyses displayed little geographic structuring and differentiation. Cattle in Côte d'Ivoire thus appear to be mono-species infected with S. bovis. Hybrids of Schistosoma haematobium × S. bovis have not been identified in this study. Cattle schistosomes appear to be panmictic across the country. CONCLUSIONS Our results contribute to a deeper understanding of schistosome populations in Ivorian cattle and emphasize a One Health approach of joint human and animal surveillance and prevention and control programmes for schistosomiasis.

Abstract
Kin selection and dispersal play a critical role in the evolution of cooperative breeding systems. Limited dispersal increases relatedness in spatially structured populations (population viscosity), with the result that neighbours tend to be genealogical relatives. Yet the increase in neighbours' fitness-related performance through altruistic interaction may also result in habitat saturation and thus exacerbate local competition between kin. Our goal was to detect the footprint of kin selection and competition by examining the spatial structure of relatedness and by comparing non-effective and effective dispersal in a population of a lekking bird, Tetrao urogallus. For this purpose, we analysed capture-recapture and genetic data collected over a 6-year period on a spatially structured population of T. urogallus in France. Our findings revealed a strong spatial structure of relatedness in males. They also indicated that the population viscosity could allow male cooperation through two non-exclusive mechanisms. First, at their first lek attendance, males aggregate in a lek composed of relatives. Second, the distance corresponding to non-effective dispersal dramatically outweighed effective dispersal distance, which suggests that dispersers incur high post-settlement costs. These two mechanisms result in strong population genetic structuring in males. In females, our findings revealed a lower level of spatial structure of relatedness and genetic structure in respect to males. Additionally, non-effective dispersal and effective dispersal distances in females were highly similar, which suggests limited post-settlement costs. These results indicate that kin-dependent dispersal decisions and costs have a genetic footprint in wild populations and are factors that may be involved in the evolution of cooperative courtship.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study is the first contribution to the molecular taxonomy of Mesocestoides spp. from domestic and wild carnivores in the Mediterranean area. A total of 13 adult worms and 13 larval stages of Mesocestoides spp. were collected from domestic and wild carnivore hosts in Italy and Tunisia. Samples collected in the Slovak Republic were used as comparative samples from outside the Mediterranean. The genes cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (cox1) and NADH dehydrogenase subunit 1 (nad1) of the mitochondrial genome were used as molecular markers to investigate the presence of cryptic Mesocestoides species in the area analysed. RESULTS Results were consistent in showing three well-supported clusters of Mesocestoides spp. in southern Italy and Tunisia, which were strongly divergent from Mesocestoides litteratus, M. corti and M. lineatus. High levels of genetic variation and no evidence of geographical structuring was found between the clusters. CONCLUSIONS Considering the low dispersal capability of the intermediate hosts of Mesocestoides spp., the lack of geographical structuring among the Mediterranean regions could be due to a high potential for dispersion of the definitive hosts. This study provides a foundation for future formal descriptions of new species of the genus Mesocestoides in the Mediterranean area.

Abstract
In spite of long-term efforts to eliminate Triatoma infestans (Klug 1834) from Brazil, residual foci still persist in the states of Bahia and Rio Grande do Sul. Data on the genetic variability and structuring of these populations are however lacking. Using nine microsatellite loci, we characterized one residual T. infestans population from Bahia and four from Rio Grande do Sul, and compared them with bugs originally from an older focus in São Paulo; 224 bugs were genotyped. The number of alleles per locus ranged from 5 to 11. Observed and expected heterozygosities per locus ranged, respectively, from 0 to 0.786 and from 0 to 0.764. Significant departures from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, mainly due to heterozygote deficits, were detected in all loci and in most populations. Global indices estimated by AMOVA were: Fis was 0.37; Fst was 0.28; and Fit was 0.55; overall indices with p = 0.00 indicated substantial differentiation. Inter-population Fst ranged from 0.118 to 0.562, suggesting strong genetic structuring and little to no gene flow among populations. Intra-population Fis ranged from 0.301 to 0.307. Inbreeding was apparent in all populations except that from Bahia-which might be either linked by gene flow to nearby unsampled populations or part of a relatively large local population. The overall pattern of strong genetic structuring among pyrethroid-susceptible residual T. infestans populations suggests that their persistence is probably due to operational control failures. Detection and elimination of such residual foci is technically feasible and must become a public health priority in Brazil.
