Empirical analysis of factors influencing industrial eco-efficiency in the Yellow River Basin from a social embeddedness perspective

Measuring industrial eco-efficiency (IEE) is essential to improve environmental quality and industrial restructuring. However, most studies ignore the influence of embeddedness on industrial eco-efficiency and lack analysis of the pathways of influence factors. Therefore, this study assesses industrial eco-efficiency in the Yellow River Basin (YRB) using a super-efficiency model slacks-based measure (Super-SBM) that considers non-desired outputs, outlines the social embeddedness of IEE, and empirically analyzes the driving mechanism of IEE from the perspective of embeddedness by constructing hierarchical linear modeling (HLM) to address the pathways of action of the influencing factors of industrial eco-efficiency. The results showed that 50.79% of the overall differences in IEE in the YRB were caused by social embeddedness. Economic development level, industrial agglomeration, and environmental regulation (ER) are significant direct influencing factors. Increasing cognitive and cultural embeddedness will enhance the positive relationship between economic development level and IEE. Political and relational embeddedness significantly moderates the positive relationship between industrial agglomeration and eco-efficiency. Cultural embeddedness can significantly and directly affect industrial eco-efficiency and weaken the positive relationship between ERs and industrial eco-efficiency. Therefore, improving IEE should consider both fundamental and embedded factors. Our findings are conducive to promoting high-quality development in the YRB and support the government in formulating differentiated policies. In addition, this paper tries to establish an empirical analysis method suitable for social embeddedness theory, and the empirical results help to improve the situation due to the lack of empirical analysis of social embeddedness theory.

Will Anything Change? Examining Historically White Fraternity Members' Development of Openness to Diversity in Contemporary Times

Scholars have identified that openness to diversity is a vital student outcome for higher education. Interest in this outcome has only intensified in recent years because of increased attention to, and unrest related to, social injustices. Using longitudinal data from 3420 undergraduate members of historically white college men's social fraternities located at 134 higher education institutions in the United States, this study examined factors that influenced the development of openness to diversity and change (ODC) amongst fraternity members from the 2019-2020 to 2020-2021 academic years. Our findings revealed that individual and institutional-level political and social involvement, and individual and institutional-level conceptualizations of fraternal brotherhood (e.g., brotherhood based on belonging) were associated with ODC during the 2020-2021 academic year. Though historically white college men's fraternities have often perpetuated exclusionary environments both in historical and contemporary times, the study results suggest that political and social involvement and participation in fraternities that emphasize belonging and accountability may contribute to college men's ODC. We urge scholars and practitioners to have more nuanced understandings of fraternities, while simultaneously challenging fraternities to put their values into actions and to deconstruct the legacies of exclusion that exist within these organizations.

Interpersonal predictors of loneliness in Japanese children: variable- and person-centered approaches

BACKGROUND

Loneliness in children has been a major topic of interest in both clinical and developmental psychology. Further studies to investigate predictors of loneliness are needed for educational practices.

METHODS

A total of 1088 late elementary school-aged children (48.81% boys, M_age = 10.35) participated in a 1-year longitudinal survey. We used hierarchical linear modeling and mover-stayer latent transition analysis.

DISCUSSION

Findings from the variable- and person- centered approaches suggested that less positive peer relations, higher victimization, and higher relational aggression are predictors of higher future loneliness. Meanwhile, both approaches did not reach an agreement concerning predictors to reduce loneliness. This result highlighted a utility of a combined approach and sounded an alarm for overreliance on the variable-centered approach dominating child research.

CONCLUSION

To protect young children from loneliness, it will be more beneficial to prevent the development of loneliness rather than to apply interventions to reduce loneliness once established. Preventive practices need to be implemented to protect children from loneliness.

Bridging the gap between multilevel modeling and economic methods

Many datasets used in the social sciences have a hierarchical structure, where lower units of aggregation are 'nested' in higher units. In many disciplines, such data are analyzed using multilevel modeling (MLM, also known as hierarchical linear modeling). However, MLM as a framework is relatively unknown in economics. Instead, economists use a range of separate econometric methods, including cluster-robust standard errors, fixed effects models, models with cross-level interactions, and estimated dependent variable models. Relying on an extensive literature review, this paper describes this methodological divide and provides a detailed comparison between MLM and 'economic methods' in their abilities to deal with three methodological challenges inherent in multilevel data ‒ clustering, omitted variables, and coefficients' heterogeneity across groups. We unfold the comparative advantages of these two methodological approaches and provide practical recommendations about which of them should be used, why, and in what settings.

Integrating Measurement-Based Care into Treatment for Autism Spectrum Disorder: Insights from a Community Clinic

Measurement-based care (MBC), an evidence-based approach that has demonstrated efficacy for improving treatment outcomes, has yet to be investigated in clients with Autism Spectrum Disorder. The current paper investigates the use of MBC in autistic (n = 20) and non-autistic (n = 20) clients matched on age, sex, and presenting problem. Results of change score analysis indicated that utilizing routine symptom monitoring can enhance treatment evaluation. Autistic clients participated in significantly more sessions, made significantly less progress, and were less compliant with MBC than non-autistic clients. Though hierarchical linear modeling demonstrated no significant differences in treatment slope, results indicated moderate effect size. These results inform the use of MBC in community clinics, highlighting policy implications and need for targeted measurement.

The Sobriety Treatment and Recovery Teams program for families with parental substance use: Comparison of child welfare outcomes through 12 months post-intervention

BACKGROUND

The 2018 Family First Prevention Services Act (FFPSA) shifted child welfare funding to interventions proven effective in preserving families with parental substance use and child welfare involvement. The Sobriety Treatment and Recovery Teams (START) program serves this population with FFPSA aligned goals.

OBJECTIVE

This study was the first to test the sustained effects of START from the initial CPS report through 12-months post-intervention.

PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING

Children (n = 784) receiving START services in four sites were compared to 784 children receiving child welfare treatment as usual (TAU).

METHODS

Using child welfare administrative data, children in START were matched to children in TAU using propensity score matching. Outcomes were tested during the intervention period, and at six- and 12-months post-intervention using comparative statistics and multilevel logistic regression.

RESULTS

The odds of START children being placed in out-of-home care (OOHC) during the intervention period were half those of children in TAU (20.3% vs. 35.2%, p < .001, OR = 0.47, 95% CI [0.37, 0.59]). When placed in OOHC, START children were more likely to be reunified with their parents (p = .042, OR = 1.44, 95% CI [0.99, 1.62]). At 12-months post-intervention, 68.5% of START and 56.0% of TAU-served children remained free from both OOHC placement and child abuse and neglect (after multilevel clustering adjustment: p < .001, OR = 1.85, 95% CI [1.41, 2.43]).

CONCLUSION

The primary impact of START was significantly reduced rates of OOHC placement, with results sustained through 12-months post-intervention and after accounting for family clusters and site differences.

Common and distinct characteristics associated with self-reported functional status in older patients with cancer receiving chemotherapy

PURPOSE

To evaluate for inter-individual differences in two subjective measures of functional status in older patients (n = 112), as well as to determine which demographic, clinical, and symptom characteristics, and levels of cognitive function, were associated with initial levels and with the trajectory of the two measures.

METHODS

Functional status was assessed using self-report measures of physical function (PF) and role function (RF) from the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Core Quality-of-Life Questionnaire at the initiation of chemotherapy and at 1, 3, 6, 9, and 12 months after its initiation. Hierarchical linear modeling was used to assess inter-individual differences in and characteristics associated with initial levels and changes in PF and RF.

RESULTS

Characteristics associated with decreases in PF at the initiation of chemotherapy were higher numbers of comorbidities and higher depression, pain, and dyspnea scores. For initial levels of poorer RF, lower Karnofsky Performance Status scores and higher pain and fatigue scores were the associated characteristics. Characteristic associated with worse trajectories of PF was not having had surgery. For RF, worse trajectories were associated with lower cognitive function and higher RF at enrollment. Characteristic associated with both lower initial levels and improved trajectories of PF was having lower performance status at enrollment.

CONCLUSIONS

Older patients undergoing chemotherapy experience reduced functional performance. Characteristics associated with decrements in PF and RF need to be assessed and interventions implemented to maintain and increase functional status in older oncology patients.

Characteristics associated with inter-individual variability in financial distress in patients with breast cancer prior to and for 12 months following surgery

PURPOSE

To evaluate for inter-individual differences in financial distress and identify demographic, clinical, and symptom characteristics associated with higher levels of financial distress.

METHODS

Patients (n = 387) were enrolled prior to breast cancer surgery and followed for 12 months. Financial distress was measured using a 0 (no problem) to 10 (severe problem) numeric rating scale. Hierarchical linear modeling was used to evaluate for inter-individual differences in trajectories of financial distress and characteristics associated with financial distress at enrollment and over 12 months.

RESULTS

Patients' mean age was 55.0 (± 11.7) years and the majority underwent breast conservation surgery (80.6%). Mean financial distress score prior to surgery was 3.3 (± 3.4; range 0 to 10). Unconditional model for financial distress demonstrated no significant changes over time (-0.006/month). Younger age, lower income, receipt of an axillary lymph node dissection and adjuvant chemotherapy, and lower attentional function were associated with higher preoperative levels of financial distress.

CONCLUSION

Risk factors identified in this study can be used to inform clinicians regarding the need to initiate financial discussions and social work referrals for some patients. Additional clinical or system level interventions should be considered for vulnerable groups with these risk factors.

Daily Stress Processes in a Pandemic: The Effects of Worry, Age, and Affect

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES

In March 2020, the World Health Organization declared the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) a pandemic. Given that such a global event might affect day-to-day stress processes, the current study examined individuals' daily stress reactivity and its moderators early in the COVID-19 pandemic.

RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS

Two-level, multilevel models examined the daily relationship between perceived stress and negative affect, or stress reactivity, as well as the moderating effects of daily pandemic worry, age, and daily positive affect on this process. Participants included 349 individuals (age range = 26-89) from the Notre Dame Study of Health & Well-being who completed a 28-day, daily diary study at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.

RESULTS

Older individuals were less stress-reactive than younger individuals. Within individuals, however, stress reactivity was buffered by daily positive affect and exacerbated by daily pandemic worry. Finally, although daily positive affect buffered daily stress reactivity, this effect was weaker on days individuals were more worried about the COVID-19 pandemic.

DISCUSSION AND IMPLICATIONS

The mobilization of positive emotion may be a promising avenue for buffering stress reactivity during the COVID-19 pandemic, although this may be limited on days individuals are particularly concerned about the pandemic.

Neighborhood disadvantage is associated with stable deficits in neurocognitive functioning in traumatically-injured adults

BACKGROUND

In trauma-exposed adults, the relationship between an individual's socioeconomic position (SEP) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has been well demonstrated. One potential mechanism by which the stress associated with lower SEPs may impact trauma outcomes is through changes in neurocognition. In both healthy and clinical samples, area-level factors also appear to be independently related to neurocognition. Far less is known about how neighborhood socioeconomic disadvantage, may impact cognition in traumatically-injured adults. The current study employed hierarchical linear modeling to longitudinally investigate whether neighborhood disadvantage was associated with neurocognitive functioning in five domains: processing speed, sustained attention, controlled attention, cognitive flexibility, and response inhibition.

METHODS

One-hundred and ninety-five socioeconomically diverse traumatically-injured subjects (mean age = 32.8, 52.8% female) were recruited from an Emergency Department. Two-weeks, three-months, and six-months post-trauma, participants completed self-report measures and a computerized test battery to evaluate neurocognition. An Area Deprivation Index (ADI) score, a measure of a neighborhood's socioeconomic disadvantage, was derived from each participants' home address.

RESULTS

Greater neighborhood disadvantage was significantly related to lower scores in all domains. Results of hierarchical linear models revealed neighborhood disadvantage was significantly associated with processing speed, controlled attention, cognitive flexibility, and response inhibition across time, even after adjusting for individual annual household income, baseline PTSD symptoms, and previous adverse life experiences. This relationship was stable for all domains except sustained attention, which varied across time.

CONCLUSION

These findings indicate neighborhood disadvantage contributes uniquely to neurocognitive functioning and, for the majority of domains, these contributions are stable across time. The relationship between area-level variables and cognitive function may underlie individual vulnerability to developing psychiatric disorders. Future work should continue to examine the interaction between socioenvironmental stressors and PTSD symptoms longitudinally.

Behavioral activation system (BAS) dysregulation and bipolar spectrum psychopathology in daily life: An online-diary study

Dysregulation of the behavioral activation system (BAS) has been theorized to be a core factor underlying mood swings in bipolar disorder (BD). However, few studies have directly addressed BAS dysregulation and more research is needed to understand its dynamic expression in daily life. The aim of this study was to directly assess BAS dysregulation, and to examine its moderating effect on the relationship between life events and bipolar spectrum symptoms via multilevel modeling. Korean young adults (n = 100) were screened using the Hypomanic Personality Scale (HPS) from a large sample (N = 1,591). They completed online diaries for 7 consecutive days including the Daily Events Record as well as bipolar spectrum symptoms. BAS-activating and/or -deactivating scores were allocated to each reported life event by an expert consensus rating. Cross-level interaction analysis showed that the occurrence of BA life events contributed to a steeper increase in bipolar spectrum symptoms, particularly for individuals with high BAS dysregulation. The present study suggests that BAS dysregulation is a unique construct that deserves further exploration in BD.

A longitudinal analysis of phenotypic and symptom characteristics associated with inter-individual variability in employment interference in patients with breast cancer

PURPOSE

A breast cancer diagnosis has a substantial economic impact. Study aims were to evaluate for inter-individual differences in cancer's level of interference with employment and identify phenotypic and symptom characteristics associated with higher levels of interference.

METHODS

Patients (n = 387) were enrolled prior to breast cancer surgery and followed for 12 months. Interference with employment was measured using a 0 (no problem) to 10 (severe problem) numeric rating scale. Hierarchical linear modeling (HLM) was used to evaluate for inter-individual differences in trajectories of employment interference and characteristics associated with employment interference at enrollment and over 12 months.

RESULTS

Patients' mean age was 55.0 (±11.7) years and the majority underwent breast conservation surgery (80.6%). Mean employment interference score was 3.2 (±3.7). Unconditional model for employment interference demonstrated a decreasing linear trend (-.076/month). Younger age, lower income, higher pain intensity, and having an axillary lymph node dissection were associated with higher pre-surgical interference scores. Having a sentinel lymph node biopsy was associated with ongoing employment interference scores. Higher sleep disturbance scores were associated with both initial and ongoing employment interference scores. Receipt of chemotherapy, use of complementary or alternative therapies, and re-excision or mastectomy following surgery were significant time varying covariates.

CONCLUSION

This study is the first to use HLM to describe inter-individual differences in the trajectories of cancer's interference with employment and associated factors prior to and for 12 months following breast cancer surgery. Patients with the identified risk factors warrant ongoing assessments of employment interference and appropriate referrals.

Testing Variance Components in Linear Mixed Modeling Using Permutation

Inference of variance components in linear mixed modeling (LMM) provides evidence of heterogeneity between individuals or clusters. When only nonnegative variances are allowed, there is a boundary (i.e., 0) in the variances' parameter space, and regular inference statistical procedures for such a parameter could be problematic. The goal of this article is to introduce a practically feasible permutation method to make inferences about variance components while considering the boundary issue in LMM. The permutation tests with different settings (i.e., constrained vs. unconstrained estimation, specific vs. generalized test, different ways of calculating p values, and different ways of permutation) were examined with both normal data and non-normal data. In addition, the permutation tests were compared to likelihood ratio (LR) tests with a mixture of chi-squared distributions as the reference distribution. We found that the unconstrained permutation test with the one-sided p-value approach performed better than the other permutation tests and is a useful alternative when the LR tests are not applicable. An R function is provided to facilitate the implementation of the permutation tests, and a real data example is used to illustrate the application. We hope our results will help researchers choose appropriate tests when testing variance components in LMM.

Individual and organizational factors associated with teacher self-reported implementation of the PATHS curriculum

The current study examined a comprehensive set of individual and organizational factors as potential predictors of how the Promoting Alternative THinking (PATHS) Curriculum was implemented by teachers in an urban Midwestern school district. The study used data from a randomized trial of an implementation support model conducted in 28 urban elementary schools. All schools implemented PATHS in grades K-3. Program fidelity was assessed with teacher self-reported ratings of lesson dosage, frequency of supplemental material use, and quality of delivery over repeated time points. The initial levels of implementation and change over time were examined in a series of three level longitudinal hierarchical liner models (HLM). Over time, teachers reported somewhat lower levels of program use but maintained their quality of delivery. Teachers with more positive attitudes towards PATHS reported more frequent lesson delivery at the intercept (winter Year 1). Teachers from schools with a more positive culture for social-emotional learning (SEL) rated the quality of their PATHS delivery more positively than teachers from schools lacking SEL culture and reported more frequent supplemental materials use. Early career teachers initially described themselves as delivering PATHS with lower quality but improved similarly over time compared to more experienced teachers. Implications of the findings and recommendations for future research are discussed.

Gastrointestinal symptoms are associated with trajectories of chemotherapy-induced nausea

PURPOSE

Between 19 and 58% of oncology patients experience chemotherapy-induced nausea (CIN). In a sample of outpatients with breast, gastrointestinal (GI), gynecological, and lung cancer, the study purposes were to evaluate for inter-individual differences in the severity of CIN over two cycles of chemotherapy (CTX) and to determine which demographic and clinical characteristics and GI symptoms were associated with higher initial levels as well as with the trajectories of CIN severity.

METHODS

Patients completed study questionnaires at six time points over two cycles of CTX. These questionnaires provided information on demographic and clinical characteristics, as well as the occurrence of twelve GI symptoms. Hierarchical linear modeling based on full maximum likelihood estimation was performed.

RESULTS

Of the 1251 patients, 47.2% reported CIN. Across two cycles of CTX, lower functional status scores and higher levels of comorbidity were associated with higher initial levels of CIN. Younger age and emetogenicity of the CTX regimen were associated with higher initial levels as well as worse trajectories of CIN. The occurrence of five GI symptoms (i.e., vomiting, lack of appetite, constipation, feeling bloated, and difficulty swallowing) was associated with higher initial levels of CIN. The occurrence of mouth sores was associated with higher initial levels as well as with worst trajectories of CIN.

CONCLUSIONS

This study is the first to identify distinct demographic, clinical, and GI symptom characteristics associated with CIN severity. These findings suggest that the etiology of CIN is complex and may warrant interventions beyond standard antiemetics.

A comparative analysis of the impacts of objective versus subjective neighborhood environment on physical, mental, and social health

Research on the relationship between neighborhood context and health outcome has attracted notable attention. However, few studies examine and compare the associations between the objective and subjective neighborhood environment and different dimensions of health. To this end, high-resolution remote sensing images and points-of-interest (POIs) data collected in Guangzhou, China, are used together with questionnaire survey data to measure the objective and subjective characteristics of the neighborhood environment. The sample includes 1029 adults selected from 34 communities in Guangzhou, China. Hierarchical linear modeling is then employed to analyze the associations between the objective and subjective neighborhood environment and three dimensions of health (physical health, mental health, and social health), as well as compare the relative strengths of and moderating mechanisms between these associations. The results indicate that significant variations in health outcomes are observed among neighborhoods, which can be explained by both personal attributes and the neighborhood environment. Although objective and subjective measures of the neighborhood environment are both linked to the three dimensions of health, physical health and social health are influenced more by objective measures, while mental health is affected more by subjective measures. Further, subjective measures have positive moderating effects on the relationship between objective measures and mental health but do not have significant moderating effects on the relationships between objective measures and physical and social health.

The anterior insula channels prefrontal expectancy signals during affective processing

Expectancy shapes our perception of impending events. Although such an interplay between cognitive and affective processes is often impaired in mental disorders, it is not well understood how top-down expectancy signals modulate future affect. We therefore track the information flow in the brain during cognitive and affective processing segregated in time using task-specific cross-correlations. Participants in two independent fMRI studies (N₁ = 37 & N₂ = 55) were instructed to imagine a situation with affective content as indicated by a cue, which was then followed by an emotional picture congruent with expectancy. To correct for intrinsic covariance of brain function, we calculate resting-state cross-correlations analogous to the task. First, using factorial modeling of delta cross-correlations (task-rest) of the first study, we find that the magnitude of expectancy signals in the anterior insula cortex (AIC) modulates the BOLD response to emotional pictures in the anterior cingulate and dorsomedial prefrontal cortex in opposite directions. Second, using hierarchical linear modeling of lagged connectivity, we demonstrate that expectancy signals in the AIC indeed foreshadow this opposing pattern in the prefrontal cortex. Third, we replicate the results in the second study using a higher temporal resolution, showing that our task-specific cross-correlation approach robustly uncovers the dynamics of information flow. We conclude that the AIC arbitrates the recruitment of distinct prefrontal networks during cued picture processing according to triggered expectations. Taken together, our study provides new insights into neuronal pathways channeling cognition and affect within well-defined brain networks. Better understanding of such dynamics could lead to new applications tracking aberrant information processing in mental disorders.

Suicidal ideation and behaviors within the school context: Perceived teacher, peer and parental support

School-related factors have been found to be associated with adolescents' suicidal ideation and behaviors, including teacher and peer support. Research has tended to ignore the nested nature of school-related data, which may be critical in this context. The current study implemented a multi-level approach on data from the 2013-14 Health Behaviors in School-aged Children (HBSC-WHO) Israeli survey among high school children (N = 4241; 56% female). Participants completed measures of teacher-, peer-, and parental-support (coded reversely from 1 = high to 5 = low), and suicidal ideation and behaviors in the last 12 months. Hierarchical Linear Modeling (HLM), controlling for gender and age, revealed that classroom-level teachers' support was significantly related to students' suicidal ideation and behaviors (OR = 1.71, 95% CI = 1.20-2.44; OR = 1.39, 95% CI = 1.04-1.86; respectively), whereas parental (OR = 1.56, 95% CI = 1.40-1.75; OR = 1.41, 95% CI = 1.30-1.55; respectively) and peer support (OR = 1.21, 95% CI = 1.12-1.31; OR = 1.11, 95% CI = 1.02-1.21; respectively) were significant at the individual-level. The school environment can play a significant role in reducing risk for suicidal ideation and behaviors. Findings can inform future research and practice in planning and implementing evidence-based intervention programs within schools.

Influence of social and neighborhood contexts on smoking cessation among urban minorities

A range of individual, social, and neighborhood factors influence the smoking-related health inequities of urban minorities. Yet little is known about how these factors interact to influence smoking behaviors, including cessation. Hierarchical linear modeling was used to estimate the variance in cessation service utilization among a sample of primarily African American adults accounted for by individual, social, and neighborhood factors. Findings showed individual and social factors were important predictors of cessation service utilization. Social contexts have significant effects on smoking cessation service use, and social influences were more significant predictors of cessation service use than neighborhood factors.

Positive and Negative Peer Influence in Residential Care

The potential for negative peer influence has been well established in research, and there is a growing interest in how positive peer influence also impacts youth. No research, however, has concurrently examined positive and negative peer influence in the context of residential care. Clinical records for 886 residential care youth were used in a Hierarchical Linear Model analysis to examine the impact of negative and positive peer influence on naturally occurring patterns of serious problem behavior over time. Negative peer influence, where the majority of youth in a home manifested above the average number of serious behavior problems, occurred 13.7% of the time. Positive peer influence, where the majority of youth manifested no serious problem behaviors for the month, occurred 47.7% of the time. Overall, youth problem behavior improved over time. There were significantly lower rates of serious problem behavior in target youth during positive peer influence months. Conversely, there were significantly higher rates of serious problem behaviors in target youth during negative peer influence months. Negative peer influence had a relatively greater impact on target peers' serious behavior problems than did positive peer influence. Caregiver experience significantly reduced the impact of negative peer influence, but did not significantly augment positive peer influence. Months where negative peer influence was combined with inexperienced caregivers produced the highest rates of serious problem behavior. Our results support the view that residential programs for troubled youth need to create circumstances that promote positive and control for negative peer influence.

Neighborhood Predictors of Intimate Partner Violence: A Theory-Informed Analysis Using Hierarchical Linear Modeling

Due to high prevalence rates and deleterious effects on individuals, families, and communities, intimate partner violence (IPV) is a significant public health problem. Because IPV occurs in the context of communities and neighborhoods, research must examine the broader environment in addition to individual-level factors to successfully facilitate behavior change. Drawing from the Social Determinants of Health framework and Social Disorganization Theory, neighborhood predictors of IPV were tested using hierarchical linear modeling. Results indicated that concentrated disadvantage and female-to-male partner violence were robust predictors of women's IPV victimization. Implications for theory, practice, and policy, and future research are discussed.

What can daily life assessment tell us about the bipolar spectrum?

Evidence suggests that bipolar psychopathology is better characterized as a spectrum than by categorical diagnoses. The examination of symptoms and impairment associated with bipolar spectrum psychopathology is important and can be enhanced by methods that examine affect, thoughts, and behavior in daily life. The present study extended findings that provide validation of a continuum of bipolar psychopathology in daily life. Young adults (n=294) completed the Hypomanic Personality Scale (HPS) and experience sampling using smartphones. Participants were signaled eight times daily for one week to complete surveys in their normal daily environment. Bipolar spectrum psychopathology was characterized by increased positive and negative affect, confidence, racing thoughts, energy, and impulsivity in daily life. The HPS moderated the association of stress with trouble concentrating, irritability with dysphoria and impulsivity, and confidence with feeling like one's emotions were out of control. This study demonstrated that bipolar spectrum psychopathology is associated with disruptions in affect, thoughts, and behaviors and provided further evidence for a continuum of bipolar psychopathology. ESM is a promising method for examining dynamic constructs such as bipolar spectrum psychopathology and has the potential to be a strong research and clinical tool.

Modifiable and non-modifiable characteristics associated with sleep disturbance in oncology outpatients during chemotherapy

PURPOSE

In a sample of outpatients with breast, gastrointestinal, gynecological, and lung cancer who received at least two cycles of chemotherapy (CTX), the purposes were to evaluate for inter-individual differences in the severity of sleep disturbance and determine which demographic, clinical, and symptom characteristics were associated with initial levels as well as the trajectories of sleep disturbance.

METHODS

A total of 1331 patients completed study questionnaires in their homes, at six time points over two cycles of CTX (prior to CTX administration, approximately 1 week after CTX administration, and approximately 2 weeks after CTX administration). Questionnaires included demographic, clinical, and symptom assessments (i.e., General Sleep Disturbance Scale, Lee Fatigue Scale, Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression Scale, Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventories, Attentional Function Index). Hierarchical linear modeling based on full maximum likelihood estimation was performed.

RESULTS

Characteristics associated with higher initial levels of sleep disturbance included higher body mass index, poorer functional status, higher trait anxiety, higher depressive symptoms, and higher evening fatigue. Characteristics associated with the worse trajectories of sleep disturbance were higher levels of education and higher sleep disturbance at enrollment. Characteristics associated with both higher initial levels and worse trajectories of sleep disturbance were higher morning fatigue and worse attentional function.

CONCLUSIONS

A large amount of inter-individual variability exists in sleep disturbance during CTX. The modifiable and non-modifiable characteristics found in this study can be used to identify higher risk patients and provide earlier interventions to reduce sleep disturbance.

Inflammatory pathway genes associated with inter-individual variability in the trajectories of morning and evening fatigue in patients receiving chemotherapy

Fatigue, a highly prevalent and distressing symptom during chemotherapy (CTX), demonstrates diurnal and interindividual variability in severity. Little is known about the associations between variations in genes involved in inflammatory processes and morning and evening fatigue severity during CTX. The purposes of this study, in a sample of oncology patients (N=543) with breast, gastrointestinal (GI), gynecological (GYN), or lung cancer who received two cycles of CTX, were to determine whether variations in genes involved in inflammatory processes were associated with inter-individual variability in initial levels as well as in the trajectories of morning and evening fatigue. Patients completed the Lee Fatigue Scale to determine morning and evening fatigue severity a total of six times over two cycles of CTX. Using a whole exome array, 309 single nucleotide polymorphisms SNPs among the 64 candidate genes that passed all quality control filters were evaluated using hierarchical linear modeling (HLM). Based on the results of the HLM analyses, the final SNPs were evaluated for their potential impact on protein function using two bioinformational tools. The following inflammatory pathways were represented: chemokines (3 genes); cytokines (12 genes); inflammasome (11 genes); Janus kinase/signal transducers and activators of transcription (JAK/STAT, 10 genes); mitogen-activated protein kinase/jun amino-terminal kinases (MAPK/JNK, 3 genes); nuclear factor-kappa beta (NFkB, 18 genes); and NFkB and MAP/JNK (7 genes). After controlling for self-reported and genomic estimates of race and ethnicity, polymorphisms in six genes from the cytokine (2 genes); inflammasome (2 genes); and NFkB (2 genes) pathways were associated with both morning and evening fatigue. Polymorphisms in six genes from the inflammasome (1 gene); JAK/STAT (1 gene); and NFkB (4 genes) pathways were associated with only morning fatigue. Polymorphisms in three genes from the inflammasome (2 genes) and the NFkB (1 gene) pathways were associated with only evening fatigue. Taken together, these findings add to the growing body of evidence that suggests that morning and evening fatigue are distinct symptoms.

Diurnal coupling between testosterone and cortisol from adolescence to older adulthood

The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) and hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axes are typically conceptualized as mutually inhibitory systems; however, previous studies have found evidence for positive within-person associations (i.e., coupling) between cortisol and testosterone. One developmental hypothesis is that positive testosterone-cortisol coupling is unique to the adolescent period and that coupling becomes attenuated, or even switches direction, in adulthood. This study used a lifespan sample (N=292, ages 11-88) to test for age-related differences in coupling between cortisol and testosterone in daily life. Participants provided salivary hormone samples at waking, 30min after waking, and during the evening for two days. Hierarchical linear modeling was used to test the within-person and between-person associations between testosterone and cortisol. Within-person associations were further decomposed into associations due to coupled diurnal change versus coupled variability around diurnal change. Results indicated positive associations between cortisol and testosterone at all levels of analysis. Additionally, positive coupling was evident across the lifespan, even in older adults who are no longer expected to reproduce, but further investigation of developmental differences with a larger sample is necessary. Potential mechanisms and functions for positive coupling are discussed.

Characteristics associated with inter-individual differences in the trajectories of self-reported attentional function in oncology outpatients receiving chemotherapy

PURPOSE

Between 14 and 85 % of patients report noticeable changes in cognitive function during chemotherapy (CTX). The purposes of this study were to determine which demographic, clinical, and symptom characteristics were associated with inter-individual variability in initial levels of attentional function as well as with changes in the trajectories of attentional function in a sample of oncology patients who received two cycles of CTX.

METHODS

Oncology outpatients (n = 1329) were recruited from two comprehensive cancer centers, one veteran's affairs hospital, and four community-based oncology programs. The Attentional Function Index (AFI) was used to assess perceived effectiveness in completing daily tasks that required working memory and attention. Hierarchical linear modeling (HLM) was used to evaluate for inter-individual variability in initial levels and in the trajectories of attentional function.

RESULTS

Demographic, clinical, and symptom characteristics associated with inter-individual differences of attentional function at enrollment (i.e., intercept) were as follows: employment status, functional status, trait anxiety, depressive symptoms, sleep disturbance, evening fatigue, and morning energy. Gender was the only characteristic associated with inter-individual differences in the trajectories of attentional function. Morning fatigue was the only characteristic associated with both initial levels and the trajectories of attentional function.

CONCLUSIONS

Prior to their next dose of CTX, patients reported moderate levels of attentional function that persisted over two cycles of CTX. Many of the clinical and symptom characteristics associated with decrements in attentional function are amenable to interventions. Clinicians need to assess patients for changes in attentional function and associated characteristics and recommend evidence-based interventions.

Geographic variation in racial disparities in child maltreatment: The influence of county poverty and population density

There are documented disparities in the rates at which black children come into contact with the child welfare system in the United States compared to white children. A great deal of research has proliferated aimed at understanding whether systematic biases or differential rates of risk among different groups drive these disparities (Drake et al., 2011). In the current study, county rates of maltreatment disparity are compared across the United States and examined in relation to rates of poverty disparity as well as population density. Specifically, using hierarchical linear modeling with a spatially lagged dependent variable, the current study examined data from the National Child Abuse and Neglect Data System (NCANDS) and found that poverty disparities were associated with rates of maltreatment disparities, and densely populated metropolitan counties tended to have the greatest levels of maltreatment disparity for both black and Hispanic children. A significant curvilinear relationship was also observed between these variables, such that in addition to the most densely populated counties, the most sparsely populated counties also tended to have higher rates of maltreatment disparity for black and Hispanic children.

Assessing the influence of obesity on longitudinal executive functioning performance in patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome

OBJECTIVE

To investigate longitudinal performance on an executive functioning task among individuals with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) and the impact of obesity on performance.

METHODS

Participants completed the Trail Making Test Part B (TMT-B), which is an executive functioning task that measured cognitive flexibility, at baseline, 3-, 6-, and 12-month follow-ups. Hierarchical linear modeling (HLM) analyses were used to assess participants' initial performance on the task, as well the trajectories of growth on the task across time points. Additionally, body mass index (BMI) was included in the estimations of fixed and random effects as a predictor of performance.

RESULTS

There were no significant differences between obese and non-obese individuals on the cognitive flexibility task at baseline. However, obese and non-obese individuals differed significantly in their linear and quadratic rates of growth across time points.

CONCLUSIONS

This study suggests that obese and non-obese individuals may differentially respond to Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) treatment (as related to cognitive flexibility). Future research should examine the impact of weight loss on the neuropsychological sequelae of obese individuals with OSAS.

Effect of hospital referral networks on patient readmissions

Previous studies have shown that referral networks encompass important mechanisms of coordination and integration among hospitals, which enhance numerous organizational-level benefits, such as productivity, efficiency, and quality of care. The present study advances previous research by demonstrating how hospital referral networks influence patient readmissions. Data include 360,697 hospitalization events within a regional community of hospitals in the Italian National Health Service. Multilevel hierarchical regression analysis tests the impacts of referral networks' structural characteristics on patient hospital readmissions. The results demonstrate that organizational centrality in the overall referral network and ego-network density have opposing effects on the likelihood of readmission events within hospitals; greater centrality is negatively associated with readmissions, whereas greater ego-network density increases the likelihood of readmission events. Our findings support the (re)organization of healthcare systems and provide important indications for policymakers and practitioners.

Socioeconomic Status and the Trajectory of Body Mass Index Among Older Japanese: A Nationwide Cohort Study of 1987-2006

OBJECTIVES

This research analyzed the body mass index (BMI) level and rate of change, and their association with socioeconomic status among older Japanese adults.

METHODS

Data came from a national sample of over 4,800 Japanese adults aged 60 and older at baseline, with up to 7 repeated observations over a period of 19 years (1987-2006). Hierarchical linear modeling was used to analyze the intrapersonal and interpersonal differences in BMI.

RESULTS

Average BMI among older Japanese was 22.26 at baseline and decreased with an accelerating rate over time. Relative to those with less education, BMI among older Japanese with more education was lower and it declined linearly at a faster rate over time. In contrast, higher household income at baseline was associated with a higher level of BMI but similar rates of decline over time. Furthermore, we found no evidence for age variations in the SES-BMI linkage as predicted by prior investigators.

DISCUSSION

These findings provide new insights into the complex relationship between socioeconomic factors and BMI, and help to inform the design of health policies and interventions related to weight control among older adults with diverse socioeconomic backgrounds.

Sensitivity analyses for clustered data: an illustration from a large-scale clustered randomized controlled trial in education

In this paper, we demonstrate the importance of conducting well-thought-out sensitivity analyses for handling clustered data (data in which individuals are grouped into higher order units, such as students in schools) that arise from cluster randomized controlled trials (RCTs). This is particularly relevant given the rise in rigorous impact evaluations that use cluster randomized designs across various fields including education, public health and social welfare. Using data from a recently completed cluster RCT of a school-based teacher professional development program, we demonstrate our use of four commonly applied methods for analyzing clustered data. These methods include: (1) hierarchical linear modeling (HLM); (2) feasible generalized least squares (FGLS); (3) generalized estimating equations (GEE); and (4) ordinary least squares (OLS) regression with cluster-robust (Huber-White) standard errors. We compare our findings across each method, showing how inconsistent results - in terms of both effect sizes and statistical significance - emerged across each method and our analytic approach to resolving such inconsistencies.

Third-grade retention and reading achievement in Texas: a nine year panel study

The academic performance of over 38,000 Texas students who failed the state's 1994 reading test was examined through their sophomore year in high school. Propensity score matching resulted in strata with retained and promoted students of comparable observed characteristics. Reading scores were analyzed using a two-level hierarchical linear model. Same grade comparisons show that third graders failing the state-mandated reading test who repeated the grade consistently outperformed in later grades the socially promoted children who also failed the third grade test. Additional analyses indicate that alternative explanations for the findings such as omitted variables, regression to the mean, differential panel attrition and cohort effects are not supported. The results are consistent with findings from other recent studies which suggest that grade retention in third grade may help increase student achievement.

Solidarity in the Grandparent-Adult Grandchild Relationship and Trajectories of Depressive Symptoms

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

Grandparent-adult grandchild relationships are becoming longer and more common, and therefore potentially more influential in the lives of individuals. This study examined the influence of solidarity (i.e., affinity, contact, and functional exchange) in the grandparent-adult grandchild relationship upon the depressive symptoms of both members of the dyad.

DESIGN AND METHODS

The study used data from the Longitudinal Study of Generations, a survey of 3- and 4-generation U.S. families that included 7 waves of data collection between 1985 and 2004. The sample was comprised of 374 grandparents and 356 adult grandchildren. We analyzed the data using multilevel growth curve models.

RESULTS

For both grandparents and adult grandchildren, greater affinity reduced depressive symptoms and more frequent contact increased symptoms. For grandparents only, receiving functional support without also providing it increased depressive symptoms.

IMPLICATIONS

The average grandparent-adult grandchild relationship is a source of both support and strain to both generations. These relationships exhibit great diversity, however, with large amounts of variation between dyads and within a single dyad over time. We suggest how policy makers and practitioners can identify the relational contexts that best promote the well-being of members of both generations.

The effects of comorbidities on the trajectory of depressive symptoms among older adults in Taiwan

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to identify depressive symptoms among older Taiwanese adults and to explore the relationships between different comorbidities and depressive symptoms.

METHODS

The data used herein were obtained from four waves of a longitudinal nationwide survey of the older Taiwanese population conducted from 1996 to 2007. Two-level hierarchical linear modeling was employed to identify the trajectory of depressive symptoms predicted by comorbidities when controlling for time-constant and time-varying covariates.

RESULTS

The time slope had an increasing tendency of depressive symptoms across time. The older adults with cardiovascular disease (CVD), gastrointestinal disease, chronic respiratory disease (CRD), and the combination of two of these three diseases had a higher effect on the intercept of depressive symptoms. Only the older adults with CRD combined with CVD or with GI disease had a significant negative effect on the slope of depressive symptoms over time. Participants with higher emotional-social support had lower depressive symptoms, and the effect of this support could reduce depressive symptoms even more over time.

CONCLUSIONS

Different patterns of comorbidities might have an additive or modifying effect on depressive symptoms. Emotional social support had a buffering or moderating effect on the prevention of depressive symptoms. This information is helpful for further studies that would address the relationships between different comorbidities and depressive symptoms.

Does Social Support Buffer the Effect of Financial Strain on the Trajectory of Smoking in Older Japanese? A 19-Year Longitudinal Study

OBJECTIVES

Although there is extensive research on the stress-buffering effects of social support on health, there is little understanding of this effect on health behaviors such as smoking, particularly during old age. This study aimed to estimate the effect of financial strain and the stress-buffering effect of social support, on the trajectory of smoking over an extended period of time among older Japanese.

METHOD

Data came from a national sample of more than 4,800 adults, aged 60 and older in Japan, with up to 7 repeated observations between 1987 and 2006 (16,669 observations). Hierarchical linear modeling was used to analyze the intrapersonal and interpersonal differences in smoking.

RESULTS

Higher financial strain at baseline was associated with greater amount of smoking, and a slower rate of decline, after adjusting for sociodemographic attributes. Greater instrumental support partially offset the deleterious effect of financial strain on the rate of decline in smoking.

DISCUSSION

Our findings add a dynamic dimension to understanding the relationship among financial strain, social support, and smoking in old age. This knowledge is significant when designing health policies and interventions regarding health behaviors in late life.

Age-related improvements in human performance monitoring have been linked to maturation of medial frontal cortex (MFC) in healthy youth, however, imaging studies conflict regarding age-related changes in MFC activation patterns. Topographical analysis of single-subject activation enables measurement of variation in location of MFC activation by age, as well as other potentially influential factors (e.g., performance on task). In this study, 22 youth (ages 8–17 years) and 21 adults (ages 23–51 years) underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging during a performance monitoring task examining interference and errors. Single-subject factors (extent of MFC activation, age and accuracy) were entered into a three-level hierarchical linear model to test the influence of these characteristics on location of MFC activation. Activation shifted from a rostral/anterior to a more dorsal/posterior location with increasing age and accuracy during interference. Inclusion of age and accuracy accounted for almost all of the unexplained variance in location of interference-related activation within MFC. This pattern links improvement of performance-monitoring capacity to age-related increases in posterior MFC and decreases in anterior MFC activation. Taken together, these results show the maturation of performance monitoring capacity to depend on more focal engagement of posterior MFC substrate for cognitive control.

HPA regulation and dating couples' behaviors during conflict: gender-specific associations and cross-partner interactions

The way romantic partners behave during conflict is known to relate to stress responses, including activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis; however, little attention has been paid to interactive effects of partners' behaviors, or to behavior outside of marital relationships. This study examined relations between unmarried partners' negative and positive behaviors during discussion of conflict and their HPA responses, including both main effects and cross-partner interactions. Emerging adult opposite-sex couples (n=199) participated in a 15-minute conflict discussion and afterward rated their behavior on 3 dimensions: conflictual, holding back, and supportive. Seven saliva samples collected before and after the discussion were assayed for cortisol to determine HPA response. Quadratic growth models demonstrated associations between male×female partners' behaviors and cortisol trajectories. Two negative dyadic patterns-mutual conflictual behavior (negative reciprocity); female conflictual/male holding back (demand-withdraw)-and one positive pattern-mutual supportive behavior-were identified. Whereas negative patterns related to lower cortisol and impaired post-discussion recovery for women, the positive pattern related to lower cortisol and better recovery for men. Women's conflictual behavior only predicted problematic cortisol responses if their partner was highly conflictual or holding back; at lower levels of these partner behaviors, the opposite was true. This work demonstrates similar costs of negative reciprocity and demand-withdraw and benefits of supportive conflict dynamics in dating couples as found in marital research, but associations with HPA are gender-specific. Cross-partner interactions suggest that behavior during discussion of conflict should not be categorized as helpful or harmful without considering the other partner's behavior.
