Promoting public engagement with household waste separation through government social media: A case study of Shanghai

Government agencies around the world are increasingly using social media to promote public engagement with government-initiated activities, such as Household Waste Separation (HWS). However, existing studies fail to examine how governments can use their official social media accounts to promote public engagement with HWS. This pioneering study investigates the effects of dialogic loop, media richness, content theme, and emotional valence on public engagement with HWS through Government Social Media (GSM). Moreover, the influencing mechanisms are explored by examining the moderating role of social media capital. In total, 1795 posts were scraped from the official Sina Weibo accounts of seventeen Shanghai governments and later analyzed. Results reveal that dialogic loop positively predicts public engagement with HWS through GSM, but media richness negatively affects public engagement. Content themes have significantly different impacts on the level of public engagement with HWS through GSM. Unexpectedly, the effect of emotional valence is not significant. This study is the first of its kind to demonstrate the moderating role of social media capital which is seen to weaken the positive effect of dialogic loop on public engagement with HWS through GSM and mitigate the negative effect of media richness.

The influence mechanism of household waste separation behavior among college students in the post COVID-19 pandemic period

College students are one of the most important groups of participants and promoters of household waste separation. Taking Ningbo as a case study, an online + offline questionnaire survey among more than 1700 students in 10 colleges is conducted to identify the main factors and pathways influencing waste separation behavior in the post COVID-19 pandemic period. The results show that the KMO statistic is 0.926, Bartlet test is p < 0.001, indicating that questionnaire sample data is suitable for factor analysis. The modified Structural Equation Model test indicates that waste separation behavior of college students mainly results from the combined effect of eight subjective intrinsic factors and seven external situational factors. Among them, the convenience of recycling facilities, the convenience of sorting facilities and the publicity and education of sorting knowledge are the top three factors with the most significant influence. The mean value of epidemic impact factors is 0.277, which is slightly lower than conventional influence factors (0.289). Environmental Norms and Constraints are an essential component in the analysis framework of college students' waste separation behavior. In the future, society and colleges should give full play to the positive influence of the epidemic factor on college students' waste separation behavior.

Social-contextual influences on public participation in incentive programs of household waste separation

Despite the widespread use of financial incentives to encourage public participation in household waste separation, recent studies have revealed the mixed success of this strategy. The present study seeks to advance our understanding of the social-contextual conditions in which financial incentives are more or less effective. Based on theories of social influence, it has investigated how program advocates, neighbor networks, and community norms affect public participation in incentivized waste-separation programs. Generalized linear mixed model analyses of more than 150,000 daily participation records for residents in 347 housing estates in Hangzhou, China have been conducted to examine the theoretical propositions. The results show that substituting ingroup members (block leaders) for outgroup agents (company staff) as program advocates increased the total number of participants. However, block leaders contributed little or even negatively to mobilizing people who had never participated previously. Levels of participation were higher among residents with stronger social networks, but lower in communities with more salient volunteerism norms. These findings illuminate the substantial interaction between financial incentives and social influences, suggesting ways to use social forces to improve incentive programs of household waste separation.

Investigation of knowledge, attitude, and practice of Tehranian women apropos of reducing, reusing, recycling, and recovery of urban solid waste

This paper aimed to explore knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of women towards the municipal solid waste (MSW) management in Tehran, Iran, to provide a basis for experts and decision-makers to develop or improve practical waste management strategies. Women's contribution could markedly promote accomplishment of MSW management strategies, which has been neglected in many developing countries. A cross-sectional study was conducted in two stages: first, a random sample of 384 respondent women was selected from the 22 urban districts of Tehran, then 64 of them were randomly selected and trained face-to-face. The second phase was aimed at determining the effectiveness of face-to-face training and its impact on women's performance in waste management. In both stages, data were collected using a structured self-administered questionnaire containing 21 questions in four categories. Chi square (χ²) and Pearson correlation tests were applied to identify the association among variables. Results indicated that 69.6% and 72.9% of the women had adequate knowledge and attitude, respectively, while only 46.0% performed moderate practice on MSW management. Overall, significant association between education level, occupation, and marital status of the women with KAP towards reduction, reuse, recycling, and recovery of MSW were yielded (p < 0.05). Adequate knowledge and positive attitude did not necessarily lead to the proper practice in this study. However, face-to-face training positively affected women's practice in solid waste recycling and source separation. Conducting training programs and motivation of women by municipalities and decision-makers to elevate women's environmental performance could substantially promote MSW management strategies in developing nations.

Economic incentive and social influence to overcome household waste separation dilemma: A field intervention study

China has experienced a rapid growth of solid waste over the years, household waste source-separation is becoming a nationwide strategy for promoting recycling economy and improving urban environmental sustainability. Waste separation, however, may end in failure due to the free-rider problem similarly existing in other pro-environmental collective actions. Along with the economic and sociological/social psychological logic respectively, this study tested the effects of economic incentive and social influence, which are theoretically considered as two general solutions to domestic waste separation dilemma. One hundred and eighty-eight residents in the three communities of Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province were assigned to a control group or one of two experimental scenarios, where they were encouraged to participate in waste separation activities through either the economic rewards given on their performance, or door-stepping campaigns aimed at constructing a supportive social environment. Six-month intervention effects were analyzed and showed that economic inducement was more effective than social mobilization in promoting waste separation. Further mediation tests indicated that self-efficacy partially mediated the effects of both strategies, while personal norms were positively associated with two treatments instead of behavior demonstration. In addition, the moderating effects of several socio-demographic factors on psychological mechanisms were also explored. The findings, limitations and implications for future research and policy are discussed in the concluding section.
