Spontaneous Oxidation in Aqueous Microdroplets: Water Radical Cation as Primary Oxidizing Agent

Exploration of the unique chemical properties of interfaces can unlock new understanding. A striking example is the finding of accelerated reactions, particularly spontaneous oxidation reactions, that occur without assistance of catalysts or external oxidants at the air interface of both aqueous and organic solutions (provided they contain some water). This finding opened a new area of interfacial chemistry but also caused heated debate regarding the primary chemical species responsible for the observed oxidation. An overview of the literature covering oxidation in microdroplets with air interfaces is provided, together with a critical examination of previous findings and hypotheses. The water radical cation/radical anion pair, formed spontaneously and responsible for the electric field at or near the droplet/air interface, is suggested to constitute the primary redox species. Mechanisms of accelerated microdroplet reactions are critically discussed and it is shown that hydroxyl radical/hydrogen peroxide formation in microdroplets does not require that these species be the primary oxidant. Instead, we suggest that hydroxyl radical and hydrogen peroxide are the products of water radical cation decay in water. The importance of microdroplet chemistry in the prebiotic environment is sketched briefly and the role of partial solvation in reaction acceleration is noted.

A Fast-Charge Graphite Anode with a Li-Ion-Conductive, Electron/Solvent-Repelling Interface

Graphite has been serving as the key anode material of rechargeable Li-ion batteries, yet is difficultly charged within a quarter hour while maintaining stable electrochemistry. In addition to a defective edge structure that prevents fast Li-ion entry, the high-rate performance of graphite could be hampered by co-intercalation and parasitic reduction of solvent molecules at anode/electrolyte interface. Conventional surface modification by pitch-derived carbon barely isolates the solvent and electrons, and usually lead to inadequate rate capability to meet practical fast-charge requirements. Here we show that, by applying a MoOx-MoNx layer onto graphite surface, the interface allows fast Li-ion diffusion yet blocks solvent access and electron leakage. By regulating interfacial mass and charge transfer, the modified graphite anode delivers a reversible capacity of 340.3 mAh g-1 after 4000 cycles at 6 C, showing promises in building 10-min-rechargeable batteries with a long operation life.

Recent advances in understanding the interfacial activity of antioxidants in association colloids in bulk oil

The chemical stability of edible oils rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) is a major challenge within the food and supplement industries, as lipid oxidation reduces oil quality and safety. Despite appearing homogeneous to the human eye, bulk oils are actually multiphase heterogeneous systems at the nanoscale level. Association colloids, such as reverse micelles, are spontaneously formed within bulk oils due to the self-assembly of amphiphilic molecules that are present, like phospholipids, free fatty acids, and/or surfactants. In bulk oil, lipid oxidation often occurs at the oil-water interface of these association colloids because this is where different reactants accumulate, such as PUFAs, hydroperoxides, transition metals, and antioxidants. Consequently, the efficiency of antioxidants in bulk oils is governed by their chemical reactivity, but also by their ability to be located close to the site of oxidation. This review describes the impact of minor constituents in bulk oils on the nature of the association colloids formed. And then the formation of mixed reverse micelles (LOOH, (co)surfactants, or antioxidations) during the peroxidation of bulk oils, as well as changes in their composition and structure over time are also discussed. The critical importance of selecting appropriate antioxidants and surfactants for the changes of interface and colloid, as well as the inhibition of lipid oxidation is emphasized. The knowledge presented in this review article may facilitate the design of bulk oil products with improved resistance to oxidation, thereby reducing food waste and improving food quality and safety.

Triple-function eutectic solvent additive for high performance lithium metal batteries

Rational carbonate electrolyte chemistry is critical for the development of high-voltage lithium metal batteries (LMBs). However, the implementation of traditional carbonate electrolyte is greatly hindered by the generation of an unstable electrode interphase and corrosive by-product (HF). Herein, we propose a triple-function eutectic solvent additive of N-methylacetamide (NmAc) with LiNO3 to enhance the stability and compatibility of carbonate electrolyte. Firstly, the addition of NmAc significantly improves the solubility of LiNO3 in carbonate electrolyte by forming an eutectic pair, which regulates the Li+ solvation structure and leads to dense and homogenous Li plating. Secondly, the hydrolysis of acidic PF5 is effectively alleviated due to the strong complexation of NmAc with PF5, thus reducing the generation of corrosive HF. In addition, the optimized cathode electrolyte interphase layer decreases the structural degradation and transition metal dissolution. Consequently, Li||LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 (NCM622) cells with the designed electrolyte deliver superior long-term cycle reversibility and excellent rate capability. This study unveils the rationale for incorporating eutectic solvent additives within carbonate electrolytes, which significantly contribute to the advancement of their practical application for high-voltage LMBs.

Interactions between CuO NPs and PS: The release of copper ions and oxidative damage

Copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) can adversely affect lung health possibly by inducing oxidative damage through the release of copper ions. However, the migration and transformation processes of CuO NPs in lung lining fluid is still unclear, and there are still conflicting reports of redox reactions involving copper ions. To address this, we examined the release of copper ions from CuO NPs in simulated lung fluid supplemented with pulmonary surfactant (PS), and further analyzed the mechanisms of PS-CuO NPs interactions and the health hazards. The results showed that the phospholipid of PS was adsorbed on the particle surface, which not only induced aggregation of the particles but also provided a reaction environment for the interaction of PS with CuO NPs. PS was able to promote the release of ions from CuO NPs, of which the protein was a key component. Lipid peroxidation, protein destabilization, and disruption of the interfacial chemistry also occurred in the PS-CuO NPs interactions, during which copper ions were present only as divalent cations. Meanwhile, the contribution of the particle surface cannot be neglected in the oxidative damage to the lung caused by CuO NPs. Through reacting with biomolecules, CuO NPs accomplished ion release and induced oxidative damage associated with PS. This research was the first to reveal the mechanism of CuO NPs releasing copper ions and inducing lipid oxidative damage in the presence of PS, which provides a new idea of transition metal-induced health risk in human body.

The impact of modified polystyrene on lysozyme fibrillation studied by surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS)

Nanoplastics could modulate the fibrillation of amyloid proteins. However, many chemical functional groups are adsorbed to change the interfacial chemistry of nanoplastics in the real world. Herein, this study aimed to investigate the effects of polystyrene (PS), carboxyl modified PS (PS-COOH), and amino modified PS (PS-NH₂) on the fibrillation of hen egg-white lysozyme (HEWL). Due to the differences in the interfacial chemistry, concentration was considered an essential factor. PS-NH₂ (10 μg/mL) could promote the fibrillation of HEWL similar to PS (50 μg/mL) and PS-COOH (50 μg/mL). Moreover, promoting the primary nucleation step of amyloid fibril formation was the primary reason. The differences in spatial conformation of HEWL were characterized by Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy and surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). Strikingly, a particular signal of SERS of HEWL incubated with PS-NH₂ at 1610 cm^-1 was found due to the interaction between amino group of PS-NH₂ and tryptophan (or tyrosine) of HEWL. Therefore, a new perspective was provided to understand the regulation of interfacial chemistry of nanoplastics on the fibrillation of amyloid proteins. Additionally, this study suggested that SERS could be a powerful method to investigate the interactions between proteins and nanoparticles.

Rational Design of Electrode-Electrolyte Interphase and Electrolytes for Rechargeable Proton Batteries

Rechargeable proton batteries have been regarded as a promising technology for next-generation energy storage devices, due to the smallest size, lightest weight, ultrafast diffusion kinetics and negligible cost of proton as charge carriers. Nevertheless, a proton battery possessing both high energy and power density is yet achieved. In addition, poor cycling stability is another major challenge making the lifespan of proton batteries unsatisfactory. These issues have motivated extensive research into electrode materials. Nonetheless, the design of electrode-electrolyte interphase and electrolytes is underdeveloped for solving the challenges. In this review, we summarize the development of interphase and electrolytes for proton batteries and elaborate on their importance in enhancing the energy density, power density and battery lifespan. The fundamental understanding of interphase is reviewed with respect to the desolvation process, interfacial reaction kinetics, solvent-electrode interactions, and analysis techniques. We categorize the currently used electrolytes according to their physicochemical properties and analyze their electrochemical potential window, solvent (e.g., water) activities, ionic conductivity, thermal stability, and safety. Finally, we offer our views on the challenges and opportunities toward the future research for both interphase and electrolytes for achieving high-performance proton batteries for energy storage.

Critical Review on cathode-electrolyte Interphase Toward High-Voltage Cathodes for Li-Ion Batteries

The thermal stability window of current commercial carbonate-based electrolytes is no longer sufficient to meet the ever-increasing cathode working voltage requirements of high energy density lithium-ion batteries. It is crucial to construct a robust cathode-electrolyte interphase (CEI) for high-voltage cathode electrodes to separate the electrolytes from the active cathode materials and thereby suppress the side reactions. Herein, this review presents a brief historic evolution of the mechanism of CEI formation and compositions, the state-of-art characterizations and modeling associated with CEI, and how to construct robust CEI from a practical electrolyte design perspective. The focus on electrolyte design is categorized into three parts: CEI-forming additives, anti-oxidation solvents, and lithium salts. Moreover, practical considerations for electrolyte design applications are proposed. This review will shed light on the future electrolyte design which enables aggressive high-voltage cathodes.

Mussel adhesion - essential footwork

Robust adhesion to wet, salt-encrusted, corroded and slimy surfaces has been an essential adaptation in the life histories of sessile marine organisms for hundreds of millions of years, but it remains a major impasse for technology. Mussel adhesion has served as one of many model systems providing a fundamental understanding of what is required for attachment to wet surfaces. Most polymer engineers have focused on the use of 3,4-dihydroxyphenyl-l-alanine (Dopa), a peculiar but abundant catecholic amino acid in mussel adhesive proteins. The premise of this Review is that although Dopa does have the potential for diverse cohesive and adhesive interactions, these will be difficult to achieve in synthetic homologs without a deeper knowledge of mussel biology; that is, how, at different length and time scales, mussels regulate the reactivity of their adhesive proteins. To deposit adhesive proteins onto target surfaces, the mussel foot creates an insulated reaction chamber with extreme reaction conditions such as low pH, low ionic strength and high reducing poise. These conditions enable adhesive proteins to undergo controlled fluid-fluid phase separation, surface adsorption and spreading, microstructure formation and, finally, solidification.
