A novel process based on powder carriers demonstrates robustness in nitrogen and phosphorus removal from real municipal wastewater

The development of efficient and low-consumption wastewater upgrading process is currently at the forefront of the wastewater treatment field. In this study, a novel wastewater treatment process based on powder carriers was proposed. Three systems, namely the activated sludge (AS) system, powder carrier (PC) system, and moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) system, were established and operated for over 140 days to treat real municipal wastewater. The characteristics and differences between the three systems were comprehensively investigated. The results suggested that the PC system exhibited notable advantages in nitrogen and phosphorus removal, especially under high influent load and low aeration conditions. The PC system, characterized by a higher nitrification rate compared to the MBBR system and a higher denitrification rate compared to the AS system, contributed to the stable nitrogen removal performance. The particle size of the zoogloea increased under the linkage of the powder carriers, and the mean size of micro-granules reached 170.88 μm. Large number of hydrophobic functional groups on sludge surface, coupled with increased protein content in EPS, further promoted sludge aggregation. Micro-granules formation improved settling performance and enhanced the abundance and activity of functional microbes. A significant enrichment in denitrifying bacteria and denitrifying phosphorus accumulating bacteria was observed in PC system. Up-regulation of the napA, narG, and nosZ genes was responsible for efficient nitrogen removal of the PC system. Moreover, a higher abundance in polyphosphate phosphotransferase (2.11 %) was found in PC system compared with AS and MBBR systems. The increase in the enzymes associated with poly-β-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) synthesis metabolism in PC system provided the energy for denitrification and phosphorus removal processes.

Coupled systems of pre-denitrification and partial nitritation/anammox improved functional microbial structure and nitrogen removal in treating swine manure digestate

This study evaluated the functional activity and microbial structure of a pre-denitrification and single-stage partial nitritation/anammox process (DB-SNAP) coupled system for effectively treating swine manure digestate (SMD). At influent ammonium concentrations of (1000 to 1500) mg/L, the pre-denitrification reactor increased the nitrogen removal efficiency (NRE) by 5%, resulting in an average NRE of 96%. The DB-SNAP and nitrogen-limited strategy facilitated the rapid adoption of anammox bacteria (AnAOB) in the SMD, maintaining a high specific rate of 0.3gN/gVSS/d. A high secretion of tightly bound extracellular polymeric substances (76 mg/gVSS to 102 mg/gVSS) promoted micro-granule aggregation and stability. Moreover, Ca. Kuenenia, an AnAOB genus, was highly enriched from 21% to (27 to 30) %, whereas Nitrospira, a nitrite-oxidizing bacteria, was significantly suppressed to (0 to 0.05) %. These findings will provide valuable guidance in implementing the anammox process in swine wastewater treatment.

Successful operation performance and syntrophic micro-granule in partial nitritation and anammox reactor treating low-strength ammonia wastewater

The stable operation of the partial nitritation and anammox (PN/A) process is a challenge in the treatment of low-strength ammonia wastewater like sewage mainstream. This study demonstrated the feasibility of achieving stable operation in the treatment of 50 mg/L ammonia wastewater with a micro granule-based PN/A reactor. The long-term operation results showed nitrogen removal efficiencies of 71.8 ± 9.9% were stably obtained under a relatively short hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 2 h. The analysis on the physicochemical properties of the granules indicated most of the granules were in a size in a range of 265-536 μm, and the elementary composition of the granules was determined to be CH_1.61O_0.61N_0.17S_0.01P_0.03. The microbial analysis revealed Candidatus Kuenenia stuttgartiensis anammox bacteria and Nitrosomonas-like AOB were the two most dominant bacteria with 27.6% and 10.5% abundance, respectively, both of which formed spatially syntrophic co-immobilization within the micro-granules. The ex-situ activity tests showed the activity of NOB was well limited through DO regulation in the reactor. These results provide an alternative PN/A process configuration for low-strength wastewater treatment by sustaining microstate granules. Optimization of the nitrogen sludge loading rate and DO regulation are important for the successful performance.
