Abstract
BACKGROUND Harm reduction (HR) is a critical response to the pronounced toxicity deaths being experienced in Canada. HR providers report many benefits of their jobs, but also encounter chronic stress from structural inequities and exposure to trauma and death. This research study sought to quantify the emotional toll the toxicity emergency placed on HR providers (Cycle One; 2019). Study objectives were later expanded to determine the impact of the ongoing toxicity as well as the pandemic's impact on well-being (Cycle Two; 2021). METHODS Standardized measures of job satisfaction, burnout, secondary traumatic stress, and vulnerability to grief were used in an online national survey. Open-ended questions addressed resources and supports. HR partners across Canada validated the findings and contributed to alternative interpretations and implications. RESULTS 651 respondents in Cycle One and 1,360 in Cycle Two reported moderately high levels of job satisfaction; they reported finding great meaning in their work. Yet, mean levels of burnout and secondary traumatic stress were moderate, with the latter significantly increasing in Cycle Two. Reported vulnerability to grief was moderate but increased significantly during COVID. When available, supports lacked the quality necessary to respond to the complexities of HR workers' experiences, or an insufficient number of sessions were covered through benefits. Respondents shared that their professional quality of life was affected more by policy failures and gaps in the healthcare system than it was by the demands of their jobs. CONCLUSION Both the benefits and the strain of providing harm reduction services cannot be underestimated. For HR providers, these impacts are compounded by the drug toxicity emergency, making the service gaps experienced by them all the more critical to address. Implications highlight the need for integration of HR into the healthcare system, sustainable and reliable funding, sufficient counselling supports, and equitable staffing models. Support for this essential workforce is critical to ensuring the well-being of themselves, the individuals they serve, and the health of the broader healthcare system.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Burnout syndrome is a mental health disorder due to chronic occupational stress. Both burnout and associated comorbidities are prevalent among health care professionals, being medical residents a vulnerable group. Despite this, the scientific medical literature currently available on this issue in dermatology residents is scarce. The aim of this study was to analyze the prevalence of the burnout syndrome, anxiety, and depression in dermatology residents, and the associated risk factors. METHODS This was a cross-sectional trial designed to include dermatology residents from Spain from December 2022 through June 2023. A self-administered form was sent via online messaging applications, including validated scales to study professional quality of life, burnout syndrome, anxiety, and depression. RESULTS A total of 48 dermatology residents were included in the study, 50% of whom (24/48) were women, with a mean age of 27 years (1.25). A total of 58.33% (28/48) of the residents had some degree of anxiety, 22.9% (11/48) some degree of depression, and 23.4% a moderate risk of burnout (11/48). Workload was the main risk factor associated with the 3 disorders studied, while managerial support or intrinsic motivation seem to play a protective role. CONCLUSIONS Burnout syndrome and its comorbidities are both prevalent in dermatology residents in Spain and closely related to each other.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study explored the meaning behind professional identity in intensive care nurses who cared for patients with COVID-19. RESEARCH METHODOLOGY/DESIGN The exploration was conducted using a qualitative interpretive phenomenological approach with guidance from hermeneutics. SETTING Semi-structured audiovisual interviews were conducted with intensive care unit nurses (n = 20) throughout the United States of America, spanning nurse experiences of caring for patients with COVID-19 between 2019 and 2022. OUTCOME MEASURE Outcome measures were codes and themes which emerged from data using Benner's interpretive phenomenology method for nursing and Heidegger's hermeneutic circle. FINDINGS Four critical findings of this study were the themes a) Keep Them Alive, b) We Are Survivors, c) I Am An Intensive Care Unit Nurse, and d) I Was Meant For This. CONCLUSION Findings suggest that professional identity is evolving for nurses as they care for patients in the intensive care and that evolution affects nursing professionals' quality of life. IMPLICATIONS FOR CLINICAL PRACTICE The findings of this study have important implications for nursing practice. These themes highlight intensive care nurses' deep commitment and strong professional identity, which can positively impact nurse retention and foster a sense of purpose and fulfillment. Understanding the meaning attached to nurses' experiences can allow nurse leaders and mentors to enhance their roles and aid in the preparation of future intensive care nurses, helping future nurses find focus and satisfaction in their professional identities. Recognizing and nurturing nurses' strong professional identity may positively impact nurse retention and fulfillment. To achieve this, nurse leaders must comprehend and support nurses' experiences, cultivating an environment that empowers these caregivers to thrive and make a lasting impact on patient care.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The professional quality of life (ProQOL), encompassing emotional, physical, and psychological well-being, is profoundly influenced by the unique nursing experiences of emergency nurses. Understanding and effectively enhancing their professional well-being are of paramount importance. This study aimed to explore the relationship between family care, organizational support, and resilience with the ProQOL among emergency nurses. METHODS This cross-sectional study, conducted between May 1 and June 1, 2023, involved 118 emergency nurses from Hunan Provincial Brain Hospital. Demographic and work-related information were collected. ProQOL, family care, organizational support and resilience were assessed using validated scales. Statistical analysis was conducted to examine the associations between these variables. RESULTS Significant differences were observed in the two dimensions of ProQOL (compassion satisfaction and burnout) among emergency nurses with different age, marital status, technical titles, work experience and night shift frequency (P < 0.05). Furthermore, both organizational support and resilience demonstrated a significant positive correlation with compassion satisfaction, while exhibiting a significant negative correlation with burnout (P < 0.05). Additionally, the third dimension of ProQOL (secondary trauma stress) was significantly negatively correlated with resilience (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION This study elucidates the pivotal role of organizational support and resilience in influencing the professional quality of life among emergency nurses, highlighting the specific needs of younger and less-experienced practitioners. Our findings lay the groundwork for targeted interventions aimed at enhancing the occupational well-being and job satisfaction of nursing staff.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patient deaths are impactful events for professional caregivers in both their professional and personal lives. The present study aims to explore how both subjective and objective patient death experiences are related to various aspects of professional quality of life (ProQOL) among physicians and nurses. METHODS Secondary analyses of cross-sectional data were conducted, and 306 Chinese physicians and nurses whose most recent patient death experience was more than one month prior were included. Objective and subjective patient death experiences were measured based on the number of past patient deaths and the Accumulated Global Changes (AGC) subscale of the Professional Bereavement Scale, respectively. ProQOL was measured with the Professional Quality of Life Scale. Regressions were run following bivariate analyses. RESULTS The number of past patient deaths was not significantly linked with any of the three ProQOL scores in either the bivariate analyses or regressions. Meanwhile, higher AGC scores were associated with higher burnout, secondary traumatic stress, and compassion satisfaction scores after participants' age, occupation (physician/nurse), department, work experience, job commitment, and sense of mission were controlled. CONCLUSION Subjective rather than objective past patient death experiences link significantly with all three aspects of physicians' and nurses' ProQOL. The more professional caregivers think that they have been changed by all past patient deaths in their career, the more they experience burnout and secondary traumatic stress, but, the more satisfied they are with their job and the helping itself.

Abstract
AIMS This study aimed to explore the relationship between workplace bullying among nurses and their professional quality of life, as well as the mediating role of coping styles between the two factors. BACKGROUND In China, the overall status of nurses' professional quality of life is not optimistic, and the problems of low compassion satisfaction and high compassion fatigue persist. Workplace bullying, which is a serious global issue, can negatively impact the mental health and professional quality of nurses. However, it has still not attracted enough attention from managers. METHODS The study used a cross-sectional research design and surveyed 297 clinical nurses from two tertiary grade A hospitals in Wuhan, China. Data were collected through an online questionnaire survey from March to May 2022. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistical methods, including Pearson correlation analysis and structural equation modeling. RESULTS The score for nurses' workplace bullying was 38.72 ± 12.30. The scores for the three dimensions of professional quality of life were 27.56 ± 4.79 for compassion satisfaction, 30.51 ± 4.33 for burnout, and 28.47 ± 4.65 for secondary trauma stress. The scores for positive coping style and negative coping style were 34.59 ± 5.72 and 20.34 ± 5.08 points, respectively. Workplace bullying had a direct negative effect on compassion satisfaction, as well as positive direct effects on burnout and secondary traumatic stress. Coping styles played a mediating effect between workplace bullying and the pairwise relationships of compassion satisfaction, burnout, and secondary trauma stress. CONCLUSION Workplace bullying hurts nurses' professional quality of life while coping styles plays an mediating role between workplace bullying and professional quality of life. Nursing managers can improve nurses' professional quality of life by reducing workplace bullying and enhancing positive coping style. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING MANAGEMENT Nursing managers can employ management wisdom and techniques to mitigate the presence and detrimental effects of workplace bullying. This, in turn, promotes a positive work environment and enhances the professional quality of life for nurses.

Abstract
PURPOSE Quality of care and the mental and physical health of nurses are interlinked. The COVID-19 pandemic has imposed an extremely high burden on health care. This study aimed to: 1) describe professional quality of life of registered nurses (RN) working in the pediatric and neonatal care units during the COVID-19 pandemic in Sweden, 2) compare professional quality of life between RNs with and without a Master's degree in specialist nursing pediatric care (MSc), and 3) compare differences in professional quality of life associated with the nursing experience (years). DESIGN AND METHODS This study adopted a cross-sectional survey design. The PROQoL®-5-questionnaire was administered as a web survey to 160 RNs at four pediatric wards and two neonatal units of two hospitals in Sweden. RESULTS Seventy-one RNs responded to the survey. Overall, they reported a sufficient professional quality of life. RNs with an MSc suffered significantly lower secondary traumatic stress levels. Experienced RNs reported significantly higher compassion satisfaction and lower occupational burnout. CONCLUSION Higher education and longer experience are beneficial for nurses' professional quality of life when working in pediatric care units. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS Results from this study highlights the importance of offering RN education in pediatric care at master level and supporting novice nurses, to prevent negative professional well-being outcomes in pediatric care, because the health of nurses is of utterly importance when crisis such as a pandemic hits the world. The findings also suggest that the conditions for professional quality of life could improve through activities such as self-care, time for reflection, better working hours, competence-adjusted salary, and educational opportunities.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Studies have shown that second-victim experiences could increase risks of the compassion fatigue while support from individuals and organisations is most often protection. However, the risk for poor compassion satisfaction and increased compassion fatigue in nurses aroused by adverse events remains an underestimated problem, meanwhile, litter known about the role of positive and negative coping styles among nurses suffering from adverse events. This study aims to investigate the effect of second-victim experiences on the professional quality of life among nurses and to determine the mediating role of coping styles in the relationship between second-victim experiences and professional quality of life. METHODS Multistage sampling was used to recruit registered nurses from Hunan province in China. Registered nurses who identified themselves as experiencing adverse events from nine tertiary hospitals were included in this study. Participants were recruited to complete a survey on the second victim experience and support tool, the simplified coping style questionnaire, and the professional quality of life scale. The stress coping theory was used to develop the framework in this study. The structural equation modelling approach was used for conducting the mediating effects analysis via IBM SPSS Statistics 26.0 and Mplus 8.3. RESULTS In total, 67% (n = 899) of nurses reported a second victim experience during their careers. In a bivariate analysis, both second-victims experiences and coping styles were significantly associated with their professional quality of life. The results showed that the effects of second victim experiences on their professional quality of life were fully mediated by coping styles. A total of 10 significantly indirect pathways were estimated, ranging from -0.243 to 0.173. CONCLUSIONS Second-victim experiences are common among nurses in this study. Since the mediating effects of coping styles were clarified in this study, it is imperative to promote the perception of negative coping styles and encourage nurses to adopt more positive coping styles with adequate support systems.

Abstract
Background Healthcare providers working with victims of physical trauma are exposed to significant human suffering at work. This may place them at risk of burnout, secondary traumatic stress (STS), and other psychological disturbances. This study aimed to evaluate the professional quality of life and psychological well-being among trauma professionals. Methodology This was a cross-sectional study conducted among 153 staff members (nursing officers, resident doctors, and faculty) of a Level 1 trauma center in North India. The Professional Quality of Life (ProQoL-5) and Depression, Anxiety, and Stress (DASS-21) Scales were used. Results More than 50% of the participants had a moderate risk of burnout and STS. In addition, 54% of participants reported having anxiety, 40% stress, and 36% depressive symptoms. Depression, anxiety, and stress were all strongly predicted by burnout and STS. Conclusion Psychological distress symptoms were seen in a significant portion of professionals working in the trauma center. Workplace interventions for the promotion of psychological well-being among trauma professionals are recommended. How to cite this article Gupta S, Bhatia G, Sagar R, Sagar S. Abstract
OBJECTIVES Few studies have elucidated the impact of work-related trauma on labor and delivery clinician or considered whether it may be a cause of burnout. This study aims to elicit labor and delivery clinician perspectives on the impact of exposure to traumatic births on their professional quality of life. METHODS Labor and delivery clinicians (physicians, midwives, nurse practitioners, and nurses; n = 165) were recruited to complete an online questionnaire on experiences with traumatic births. The questionnaire contained measures from the Maslach Burnout Inventory and the professional quality of life scale version 5. Some participants completed an optional free-text prompt to recommend ways to support clinicians after traumatic births (n = 115). Others opted into a semi-structured phone interview (n = 8). Qualitative data was analyzed using a modified grounded theory approach. RESULTS Self-reported adequate institutional support for clinicians after a traumatic birth was positively correlated with compassion satisfaction (r = 0.21, p < 0.01) and negatively correlated with secondary traumatic stress (r = - 0.27, p < 0.01), and burnout (r = - 0.26, p < 0.01). Qualitative themes included lack of system-wide and leadership support, lack of access to mental health resources, and suboptimal workplace culture as contributors toward secondary traumatic stress and burnout. Participants recommended proactive leadership, consistent debriefing protocols, trauma education, and improved access to counseling. CONCLUSIONS FOR PRACTICE Multi-level barriers prevented labor and delivery clinicians from accessing needed mental health support after exposure to traumatic births. Proactive investment in healthcare system supports for clinicians may improve clinician professional quality of life.

Abstract
Background Psychological distress is highly noticeable among caregivers working in residential youth care (RYC). Maintaining and enhancing caregivers' professional mental health and quality of life is crucial to achieve effective outcomes in RYC. Nevertheless, trainings to protect caregivers' mental health are scarce. Considering the buffering effect over negative psychological outcomes, compassion training could be beneficial in RYC. Objective This study is part of a Cluster Randomized Trial examining the effects of the Compassionate Mind Training for Caregivers (CMT-Care Homes), looking at professional quality of life and mental health of caregivers working in RYC. Method The sample was composed of 127 professional caregivers from 12 Portuguese residential care homes (RCH). RCHs were randomly allocated at experimental (N = 6) and control group (N = 6). Participants were assessed at baseline, post-treatment, and 3 and 6-month follow-ups, answering to the Professional Quality of Life Scale and the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale. Program effects were tested using a two-factor mixed MANCOVA, with self-critical attitude and education degree as covariates. Results MANCOVA showed a significant Time × Group interaction effects (F = 1.890, p = .014; η p 2 = .050), with CMT-Care Homes participants presenting lower scores on burnout, anxiety, and depression at 3 and 6-months follow-ups, when compared with controls. Participants that received CMT-Care Homes considered the program useful to deal with pandemic threats and with youth during lockdowns. Conclusion This study shows the benefits of the CMT-Care Homes in helping professional caregivers reducing burnout, anxiety and depression, and dealing with pandemic challenges in RYC.Trial registration: This cluster randomized trial was registered at ClinicalTrials.gov (TRN: NCT04512092) on 6th August 2020.

Abstract
AIM To explore the prevalence and predictors of compassion satisfaction, secondary traumatic stress, and burnout among Chinese hospice nurses. BACKGROUND Because of prolonged and continual contact with suffering, deaths, and grief, hospice nurses may be vulnerable to emotional burdens and have difficulty maintaining their professional quality of life. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted. A total of 478 hospice nurses were selected from 24 medical institutions in Sichuan province. Demographic, work-related information and work-related trauma questionnaire, the Chinese version of the Interpersonal Reactivity Index, the Chinese version of the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire, and the Chinese version of the Professional Quality of Life Scale for Nurses were used for collecting data. RESULTS The mean scores of compassion satisfaction, secondary traumatic stress, and burnout were 34.89 ± 6.21, 26.35 ± 5.24, and 24.49 ± 5.01, respectively. Job satisfaction, perspective-taking, empathic concern, working in tertiary hospitals, and adopting cognitive reappraisal strategy were positively associated with compassion satisfaction, while personal distress was a negative factor, all variables explaining 50.7 % of the variance. Higher burnout was found among nurse who had higher personal distress, worked in secondary or primary hospitals, worked >8 h per day and caring for >10 dying patients last month. In addition, job satisfaction, social support, perspective-taking, empathic concern, and cognitive reappraisal were identified as significant protectors, explaining 50.1 % of the variance. We also found that lower job satisfaction, higher personal distress, higher expressive suppression, lack of social support, senior nurses, and cared for >10 dying patients last month, were positively related to secondary traumatic stress. However, cognitive reappraisal had negative associations. These seven factors explained 32.0 % of the variance. CONCLUSIONS Hospice care has specific characteristics and hospice nurses may suffer from more work-related stressors compared with other nurses. Our study may provide clues to help nursing administrators identify hospice nurses who are at higher risk of compassion fatigue and design targeted interventions focused on potential risk factors and protectors to improve hospice nurses' compassion satisfaction, while reducing compassion fatigue.

Abstract
PURPOSE Novice nurses find it challenging to cope with patient dying and death, especially in a death taboo cultural context, such as mainland China. By taking the example of Chinese novice oncology nurses, this study aimed to explore the contribution of their perceived death competence in determining their professional quality of life. METHOD A multicentre, cross-sectional study was conducted in six tertiary cancer hospitals in mainland China involving 506 novice oncology nurses. Measurements were the Coping with Death Scale-Chinese version, the Professional Quality of Life Questionnaire, and the Coping Style Questionnaire. Hierarchical multiple regression analyses were used to analyse the data. RESULTS Death competence was significantly associated with compassion satisfaction (r = 0.509, P < 0.001), burnout (r = -0.441, P < 0.001) and secondary traumatic stress (r = -0.154, P < 0.001) which are the three dimensions of professional quality of life. The results of hierarchical multiple regression analyses demonstrated that death competence positively predicted compassion satisfaction and negatively predicted burnout (P < 0.01), but had no significant impact on secondary traumatic stress after coping style was entered into the model (P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Novice oncology nurses who perceive themselves to be incompetent in dealing with patient dying and death are more likely to experience poor professional quality of life in the death taboo cultural context. Cultural-sensitive interventions and a supportive work environment are important to enhance these nurses' death competence, increasing their professional quality of life and ultimately contributing to better end-of-life cancer care management.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nurses working in emergency departments are overworked and exposed to frequent stressors over time, leading to compassion fatigue, burnout, and secondary traumatic stress. AIMS This study aimed to assess the levels of compassion fatigue and compassion satisfaction, and examine the relationship of these two variables with specific demographic, health-related, and work-related factors among emergency nurses in Jordan. METHODS This is a cross-sectional study. The Professional Quality of Life Scale Version 5 was used to collect data. RESULTS A convenience sampling method was used to recruit 203 registered nurses from emergency departments in Jordan. The mean compassion fatigue and satisfaction scores were moderate. There was a significant but negligible correlation between compassion satisfaction and educational levels (r = 0.15, p < 0.05) and between secondary traumatic stress and comorbid diseases (r = -0.16, p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Although the levels of compassion fatigue and satisfaction were moderate, both may negatively affect nurses' care and patient outcomes. Conversely, compassion satisfaction should be improved in order to overcome the negative effects of compassion fatigue.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Western studies have found that nurses are likely to experience both positive and negative emotions in their job, as a helping profession [professional quality of life (ProQoL)] during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, and that psychosocial and work-related variables (e.g. pandemic-related stressors, interpersonal and organizational support, coping strategies) are associated with such outcomes. However, relevant studies on nurses in the Asian context are limited. OBJECTIVE This study examined the psychosocial correlates of three indicators of ProQoL, i.e. compassion satisfaction, secondary traumatic stress (STS), and burnout, among nurses during the fifth wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in Hong Kong. METHOD Nurses in Hong Kong (N = 220) working in hospitals and community settings during the COVID-19 pandemic were recruited between 24 May and 27 June 2022 through nursing associations to complete an online survey measuring the aforementioned psychosocial variables. RESULTS Hierarchical regression results found that stressors from clinical work environments, insufficient emotional support, and less positive reframing were associated with poorer ProQoL (i.e. lower compassion satisfaction; higher STS and burnout) (β from 0.16, p > .05, to 0.44, p > .001). In addition, COVID-19-related worries/uncertainties and emotional processing were associated with higher STS (β from 0.21 to 0.23, p < .01), whereas insufficient organizational support for communication with the healthcare system was associated with higher burnout (β = 0.12, p < .05). CONCLUSIONS Our findings identified the important psychosocial determinants in ProQoL among nurses in Hong Kong and provide recommendations for services supporting the mental health of these nurses. Providing workshops for nurses to train their skills in coping with COVID-19-related uncertainties, worries, and stressors from the clinical work environment, in using adaptive coping strategies (e.g. positive reframing), and in soliciting emotional support from important others could facilitate their ProQoL. Moreover, the provision of organizational support through timely and transparent communication with the healthcare system could reduce STS in nurses.

Abstract
Background Professional quality of life is one of the growing concerns among healthcare workers especially during COVID-19 pandemic. Presence and work of radiologist and medical imaging technologist for prolonged hours with patients could be stressful and painful. Objectives This study aimed to assess the professional quality of life among the radiologist and medical imaging technologist by analyzing professional satisfaction, compassion, and burnout during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods An online, cross-sectional, self-reported, and internet-based survey was carried out among 153 radiologists and medical imaging technologists. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize the sociodemographic variables and domains of professional quality of life scale. Cronbach's alpha was used to check internal consistency. Independent sample t-test (two-tailed) was used to compare the demographic variables and compassion satisfaction, burnout, and secondary traumatic stress. Results Most participants reported moderate and higher level of compassion satisfaction, whereas moderate burnout and secondary traumatic stress was reported by most participants during COVID-19 pandemic. There was negative correlation between compassion satisfaction and burnout and secondary traumatic stress. Conclusion The findings of this study are vital to understand the work-related quality of life among healthcare professionals not only during COVID-19 pandemic but also after the pandemic situation. There is a need to conduct qualitative evaluation to ascertain the risk factors associated with professional quality of life. The study also reflects the need to focus more on the mental health of healthcare professionals not only during and after pandemic situation.

Abstract
Background Nurses are exposed to work-family conflict (WFC) due to specific occupational conditions, such as exposure to patients and shift work, which can affect the professional quality of life (ProQoL). The aim of the present study was to determine the relationship between different levels of work-family conflicts and professional quality of life and their sociodemographic characteristics among the nurses in two hospitals in Tehran, Iran. Methods This cross-sectional study included 234 nurses from two hospitals. Data were collected using a three-part questionnaire, including items related to nurses’ demographic characteristics, the WFC questionnaire, and the ProQoL questionnaire. Results There was a significant positive correlation between conflict in terms of time and behavior with compassion satisfaction and between the three types of conflict with job burnout (p < 0.05). The results indicate that the WFC and ProQoL scores and the mean WFC were higher among women, people who had a disabled family member, and nurses who worked equal to or more than 175 hours a month. Regarding the dimensions of ProQoL, the mean compassion satisfaction was lower among people who lived with their parents, people who had a second job had a child younger than one-year-old, and a disabled family member had higher means of job burnout. Also, those who had younger children experienced less PTSD. Furthermore, the mean of WFC and burnout among single nurses was significantly lower than among married and divorced/widowed nurses. Additionally, the mean of WFC and burnout among nurses living in rental houses and nurses reporting the level of satisfying relationships with co-workers as ‘bad’ were significantly more than for other nurses. Conclusion Stable mental and emotional conditions are of great importance for nurses to provide safe and quality services to their patients. The results also revealed that nurses’ compassion satisfaction and job burnout were associated with different types of conflict. The WFC of nurses is related to their ProQoL and affects their job satisfaction and burnout. Reducing conflict may improve the nurses’ satisfaction and thus improve patient care and healthcare services.

Abstract
This research analyzed the effect of professional, organizational and care-unit identifications on both healthcare professionals' quality of professional life and mental health. This research was done in a local hospital in a region of northern Italy which was one of the first regions to be impacted by the first wave of the pandemic. Using a cross-sectional research, a web-based questionnaire was sent to the healthcare professionals. Professional quality of life, professional identifications as well as emotional maladjustment in terms of stress, anxiety and depression were measured. Results indicated that professional and care unit identification were positively linked to increased compassion satisfaction and reduced burnout. Professional identification was negatively associated with secondary traumatic stress as well, while care unit identification was positively associated with vicarious trauma. The negative dimension of the professional quality of life had positive relations with emotional maladjustment. Professional and care unit identifications appeared to have an indirect effect via professional quality of life on maladjustment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Professional quality of life involves the negative and positive effects of proving care to terminal patients on health care professionals, including burnout and compassion satisfaction. Around 18% of hospice staff have experienced burnout, and few studies explore the role of an innate ability to cope with burnout. The aim of this study was to explore the significant predictors of burnout and compassion satisfaction as well as the coping strategies among hospice staff in Taiwan. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted, and 220 hospice staff were recruited. Standardized questionnaires were used to collect self-rated stress and growth due to hospice care, self-efficacy, self-awareness, and managing emotion. RESULTS Hospice staff who perceived higher stress and lower growth due to hospice care and had lower self-efficacy in providing hospice care experienced higher burnout and lower compassion satisfaction. Those who had a lower level of ability related to self-awareness and managing emotion tended to experience higher burnout. The common coping strategies included seeking social support, taking professional courses for clinical skills, and developing hobbies. CONCLUSION Hospice staff have to develop professional abilities in regard to hospice care as well as an ability to maintain awareness and manage emotions related to work.

Abstract
Objective: To systematically evaluate the correlation between professional quality of life and social support of Chinese nurses based on Pearson and Spearman correlation coefficients. Methods: In databases including PubMed, Cochrane Library, CINAHL, Medline, CBM, CNKI、Wanfang, and other databases were searched by computer for the literatures on correlation between Chinese nurses' professional quality of life and social support from January 2005 to July 2020. The Chinese and English search terms are "nurse" "professional quality of life" "empathy satisfaction" "empathy fatigue" "professional quality of life" "ProQOL" "comparison satisfaction" "comparison fatigue" "social support" "competent social support" "SSRS" "PSSS", etc. Literatures were screened according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. After evaluating quality and extracting data, meta-analysis was conducted using RevMan 5.3 software. Results: A total of 12 studies were included. The meta analysis showed that nurses' compassion satisfaction, burnout, secondary traumatic stress were related to social support, summary r were 0.35, -0.26 and -0.23 respectively. The correlation between compassion satisfaction and social support were increased with sample, the south was higher than the north, and comprehensive departments were higher than other departments (P<0.05) . The correlation between burnout and social support were increased with time and sample, and the south was higher than the north, oncology was higher than others, non-random sampling was higher than random sampling, using ProQOL and Perceived Social Support Scale (PSSS) was higher than Professional Quality of Life Scale (ProQOL) and Social Support Racting Scale (SSRS) (P<0.05) . The correlation coefficient between secondary traumatic stress and social support in oncology was higher than others, random sampling was higher than non-random sampling, using ProQOL and PSSS was higher than ProQOL and SSRS (P<0.05) . Conclusion: There is a positive and weak correlation between compassion satisfaction and social support, and a negative and weak correlation between burnout and secondary traumatic stress and social support. There are differences in different time, research design, region and department.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nurses practicing in long-term care or rehabilitation settings face unique challenges from prolonged or repeated exposure to stressors, given their extended time with patients. This puts them at risk for compassion fatigue, burnout, and secondary traumatic stress, which can lead to decreased resilience and sleep problems. AIM The aim of this study was to examine relationships among resilience, professional quality of life, sleep, and demographics in nurses working in long-term care or rehabilitation settings, and to investigate whether demographics, professional quality of life, and sleep quality are significant predictors of nurses' resilience. METHODS In this cross-sectional study, we used the following measures: demographics, the Connor-Davidson Resilience Questionnaire, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and the Professional Quality of Life Scale (ProQOL). Data were analyzed with SPSS v25. Data analysis consisted of descriptive statistics, bivariate correlations, and multiple regression. RESULTS Participants (N = 120) were mostly female (85%) and registered nurses (90%). Mean scores were 52.13 for resilience and 7.53 for sleep quality. Mean ProQOL subscale scores were 41.78 for compassion satisfaction, 22.28 for compassion fatigue, and 23.92 for secondary traumatic stress. Multiple regression models showed that compassion satisfaction, burnout, and secondary traumatic stress significantly predicted resilience (β = 0.69, β = -0.61, and β = -0.34, respectively, all p < .05). CONCLUSIONS Resilience is important in nurses' personal and professional lives because it helps to protect nurses from the negative consequences of stressors. Strategies, resources, and workplace support can promote self-care and resilience.

Abstract
Objective Being a member of the dental profession is often associated with stress and high levels of burnout. Stress coping strategies may significantly help mediate burnout. The present cross-sectional study sought to examine the role of stress coping strategies on burnout, secondary traumatic stress, and compassion satisfaction amongst Israeli dentists. Methods The study was carried out amongst Israeli dentists with the use of the following questionnaires: (1) the Professional Quality of Life Scale 5 (ProQOL), referring to burnout, compassion satisfaction, and level of secondary traumatic stress; (2) the Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations–Situation Specific Coping Inventory (CISS-SSC), referring to coping strategies (task-focused, emotion-focused, or avoidance-focused coping); and (3) demographic and professional variables (eg, specialisation, workload). Participants included 243 Israeli dentists. Univariate analyses and linear regressions were conducted to evaluate the relationships amongst coping strategies and burnout, secondary traumatic stress, and compassion satisfaction. Results Female dentists had higher emotion-focused and avoidance coping scores than male dentists. Burnout could be explained by higher emotion-focused coping scores and lower task-focused and avoidance-focused coping. Secondary traumatic stress could be explained by higher emotion-focused scores, having fewer years of professional experience, and younger ages. Compassion satisfaction could be explained by lower emotion-focused coping as well as by higher task-focused coping and workload scores, specialisation, and gender. Conclusions The findings suggest that emotional coping may cause dentists to be vulnerable to burnout and to secondary traumatic stress.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Emergency department nurses are continually exposed to distressing experiences that can lead to burnout, compassion fatigue, and compassionate satisfaction, thus could affect the professional quality of life. The aim of this study was to analyse professional quality of life in hospital emergency department nurses based on perceived health, social support and a series of socio-demographic and sociooccupational variables. METHODS This descriptive cross sectional study involved nursing professionals working at hospital emergency departments in Andalusia, Spain. Professional quality of life, perceived health, socio-demographic and occupational variables, and perceived social support were measured. A descriptive and multiple regression analysis was performed. RESULTS A total of 253 nursing professionals participated, of which 62.5% had high levels of compassion fatigue and compassion satisfaction (45.1%). Burnout levels were medium (58.5%). Perceived health significantly influenced on compassion fatigue and burnout. Perceived social support was found to be significantly related to all three dimensions of professional quality of life, but it had the greatest influence on the occurrence of burnout. CONCLUSIONS Emergency department nurses in public hospitals are emotionally drained. Healthcare systems must develop intervention strategies to increase the quality of life of nursing professionals, which would lead to improved patient care. The promotion of compassion is a key element.

Abstract
PURPOSE Clinicians face personal barriers that impede the provision of bereavement care and require education in hospice care. This study aims to investigate the effects of an educational bereavement program on emotional and cognitive barriers, self-efficacy, and professional quality of life among clinicians in hospice care. METHODS A pretest-posttest design was implemented. A total of 194 clinicians with working experience in hospice care were recruited. The participants underwent a 12-h workshop. The content included lectures, role-play, and group discussion. Emotional and cognitive barriers, self-efficacy, and professional quality of life were measured before and after the program and at 3-month follow-up. RESULTS After the educational program, negative emotional barriers (F (2, 386) = 17.07, p < 0.001), lack of ability (F (2, 386) = 20.11, p < 0.001), belief in avoidance (F (2, 386) = 7.10, p = 0.001), outcome expectancy (F (2, 386) = 11.32, p < 0.001), and burnout (F (2, 386) = 5.59, p = 0.005) decreased significantly. Self-efficacy (F (2, 386) = 5.37, p = 0.006) and compassion satisfaction (F (2, 386) = 127.99, p < 0.001) increased significantly. CONCLUSION The educational program addressed personal barriers to bereavement care. Role-play and group discussion about emotional and cognitive barriers can reduce barriers and improve self-efficacy in clinicians in hospice care.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study is to identify burnout syndrome severity and prevalence in paediatric intensive care unit nurses. DESIGN Systematic review. SETTING Paediatric intensive care unit. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES A librarian was consulted on methodology before the search process. MEDLINE (via PubMed), EMBASE, the Cochrane Library, CINAHL, and PsycINFO were searched for full-text studies published before September 2019 in any language. Only those observational studies exploring burnout syndrome, including paediatric intensive care unit nurses, were included. Two authors independently screened studies. We assessed the risk of bias within each study based on the Office of Health Assessment and Translation tool. RESULT After screening 1238 articles, we identified six studies which met the systematic review criteria. All studies included were published after 2012 and participant sample sizes were between 35 and 195 nurses. Three studies were conducted in the United States of America while the others were from the United Kingdom, Turkey and Taiwan. Prevalence of burnout syndrome in pediatric intensive care unit nurses was reported in these studies as between 42% and 77%. The assessment tools used in these studies were the (abbreviated) Maslach Burnout Inventory, Abbreviated Maslach Burnout Inventory, Occupational Burnout Inventory, and Professional Quality of Life Scale Version 5. We could not conduct a meta-analysis due to the lack of studies. CONCLUSION Our systematic review identifies that a low number (6 total) of relevant studies focused on burnout syndrome for pediatric intensive care unit nurses with a prevalence of burnout syndrome in paediatric intensive care unit nurses of between 42% and 77%.

Abstract
Objectives To describe the professional quality of life and explore its associated factors among nurses coming from other areas of China to assist with the anti-epidemic fight in Wuhan and especially examine whether the hospital ethical climate was independently associated with nurses’ professional quality of life. Methods A cross-sectional online survey was conducted from March 2020 to April 2020. The nurses working in Wuhan from the other parts of China were the target population. The Professional Quality of Life Scale version 5, the Hospital Ethical Climate Survey, and a basic information sheet were used to collect data. Descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation, and multiple linear regression analysis were used to analyze the data. Results In total, 236 nurses participated in this study, and 219 valid questionnaires were analyzed. The average age of the participants was 31.2 ± 5.0 years. Most nurses were female (176/219; 80.4%) and married (145/219; 66.2%). In term of professional quality of life, nurses reported moderate (129/219; 58.9%) to high (90/219; 41.1%) levels of compassion satisfaction, low (119/219; 54.3%) to moderate (100/219; 45.7%) levels of burnout, and low (67/219; 36.0%) to high (10/219; 4.6%) levels of secondary traumatic stress. Regarding hospital ethical climate, nurses reported moderately high hospital ethical climates with an average score of 4.46. After controlling for socio-demographic characteristics, the multiple linear regression models showed that the hospital ethical climate subscale of “relationship with physicians” was independently associated with the compassion satisfaction (β = 0.533, P < 0.01) and burnout (β = −0.237, P < 0.05); the hospital ethical climate subscale of “relationship with peers” (β = −0.191, P < 0.01) was independently associated with the secondary traumatic stress. Conclusions During the early stage of the pandemic, nurses demonstrated moderate to high level of compassion satisfaction, low to moderate level of burnout, and all nurses experienced secondary traumatic stress. Nurses perceived a high level of hospital ethical climate, and the perceived hospital ethical climate played an important role in promoting nurses’ professional quality of life during a life-threatening infectious disease pandemic.

Abstract
Background Data on professional quality of life in newly graduated nurses are scarce. This study aimed to describe the levels of professional quality of life, and to explore the relationships of transition shock, empathy, resilience and coping strategies with professional quality of life in newly graduated nurses. Methods This was a cross-sectional study, which used a two-stage sampling method to recruit 393 newly graduated nurses in Sichuan province of China. Multiple regression analysis was used to explore the effects of transition shock, empathy, resilience and coping strategies on professional quality of life. Data were collected using standardized scales. Results The prevalence of average levels of compassion satisfaction, burnout and secondary traumatic stress in newly graduated nurses were 80.2, 38.2 and 57.5%, respectively. Transition shock was a significant negative predictor, and empathy, resilience and adaptive coping were significant positive predictors for compassion satisfaction. Transition shock and passive coping were significant positive predictors, and empathy was a significant negative predictor for burnout and secondary traumatic stress. Resilience and adaptive coping contributed to burnout significantly and negatively. Conclusion Higher transition shock and lower empathy cause lower compassion satisfaction and higher compassion fatigue. More resilience and adaptive coping cause more compassion satisfaction and less burnout. More passive coping contributes to higher compassion fatigue. Strategies such as transition or preceptorship programmes, and empathy, resilience and coping training are effective methods to reduce transition shock, facilitate empathy, resilience and coping, and consequently, enhance professional quality of life in newly graduated nurses.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The current study examined the change in local government staff's emotional distress over 7 years after the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake, and the influence of earthquake exposure and professional quality of life (ProQOL) on emotional distress. METHODS This longitudinal study assessed 250 participants at 1 year after the earthquake; 162 (64.8%) were followed up at 7 years. Emotional distress was assessed with the Self-Reporting Questionnaire (SRQ) at both time points. We assessed ProQOL, including compassion satisfaction, burnout, and secondary traumatic stress, and earthquake exposure at 1 year. Wilcoxon signed-rank tests were performed to test longitudinal changes in emotional distress. Hierarchical multiple regression was conducted to examine the effect of earthquake exposure and ProQOL. RESULTS The positive screening rate of emotional distress (SRQ ≥ 8) was 37.6 and 15.4% at one and 7 years, respectively. Emotional distress scores declined over time (p < 0.001). Earthquake exposure and ProQOL predicted one-year (ps < 0.05) but not seven-year emotional distress, whereas burnout predicted both one-year (p = 0.018) and seven-year (p = 0.047) emotional distress. CONCLUSIONS Although emotional distress can recover over time, it persists even 7 years later. Actions to reduce burnout during the early stage of post-disaster rescue have long-term benefits to staff's psychological outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Cancer care can be taxing. Alexithymia, a personality construct characterized by difficulties in identifying and describing feeling and emotions, an externally-oriented thinking style and scarcity of imagination and fantasy, is significantly correlated with higher levels of both secondary traumatic stress (STS) and burnout and lower levels of compassion satisfaction in medical professionals in radiation oncology. In this study, we aimed to assess the difference in professional quality of life (QoL) and the association with alexithymia in this multidisciplinary field depending on the specific profession (radiation/clinical oncologist, RO; medical physicist, MP; radiation therapist, RTT). MATERIAL AND METHODS The study was conducted via an online questionnaire, receiving 1500 submissions between May and October 2018. Alexithymia was assessed via the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20) and professional QoL was evaluated using the Professional Quality of Life Scale (ProQoL) version 5. Comparisons between the RO, RTT, and MP groups were performed by ANOVA or MANOVA, followed by Bonferroni corrected ANOVAs for continuous variables, and Pearson's chi-square test for categorical variables. The effect size was determined by calculating partial eta-squared (η2). RESULTS Profession had a moderator role on the correlation between alexithymia and STS, with RO being at a higher risk than MP and RTT. Further, the results of this study demonstrate the relevant point prevalence of decreased well-being at work even for professional categories such as MP despite the more technical profile and reduced interaction with patients. CONCLUSIONS This study demonstrates the importance of alexithymia as a factor contributing to decreased professional QoL amongst radiation oncology professionals. Alexithymic ROs are impacted to a higher extent compared to MPs and RTTs by the indirect exposure to patients suffering. It is worth addressing these observations in professional education, aiming to improve QoL for healthcare personnel.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Physical and mental well-being are crucial for oncology professionals as they affect performance at work. Personality traits, as alexithymia and empathy, may influence professional quality of life. Alexithymia involves diminished skills in emotion processing and awareness. Empathy is pertinent to the ability to understand another's 'state of mind/emotion'. The PROject on Burn-Out in RadiatioN Oncology (PRO BONO) investigates professional quality of life amongst radiation oncology professionals, exploring the role of alexithymia and empathy. The present study reports on data pertinent to radiation therapists (RTTs). MATERIAL AND METHODS An online survey targeted ESTRO members. Participants were asked to fill out 3 questionnaires for alexithymia, empathy and professional quality of life: (a) Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20); (b) Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI); (c) Professional Quality of Life Scale (ProQoL). The present analysis focuses on RTTS to evaluate compassion satisfaction (CS), secondary traumatic stress (STS) and Burnout and their correlation with alexithymia and empathy, using generalized linear modeling. Covariates found significant at univariate linear regression analysis were included in the multivariate linear regression model. RESULTS A total of 399 RTTs completed all questionnaires. The final model for the burnout scale of ProQoL found, as significal predictors, the TAS-20 total score (β = 0.46, p < 0 0.001), and the individual's perception of being valued by supervisor (β = -0.29, p < 0.001). With respect to CS, the final model included TAS-20 total score (β = -0.33, p < 0.001), the Empatic Concern domain (β = 0.23, p < 0.001) of the IRI questionnaire and the individual's perception of being valued by colleagues (β = 0.22, p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Alexithymia increased the likelyhood to experience burnout and negatively affected the professional quality of life amongst RTTs working in oncology. Empathy resulted in higher professional fulfillment together with collegaues' appreciation. These results may be used to benchmark preventing strategies and implement organization-direct and/or individual-directed interventions.

Abstract
Objectives There are a number of mindfulness-based programs (MBPs) that have demonstrated effectiveness for patients and health care professionals. The Interpersonal Mindfulness Program (IMP) is a relatively new MBP, developed to teach those with prior mindfulness training to deepen their mindful presence, empathy and compassion in the interpersonal domain. The aim of the present study was to examine the feasibility of using the IMP with mental health care workers and assessing its effects on levels of mindfulness, self-compassion, empathy, stress and professional quality of life when compared with the control group participants. Methods The IMP training consisted of nine weekly 2.5-h sessions and daily home practice (45–60 min). Twenty-five participants (mean age, 51.4 years) with mindfulness experience participated in the training. Twenty-two individuals in the control group (mean age, 47.5 years) were recruited from those who had followed a mindfulness training before. Feasibility of the IMP was assessed in the training participants in six domains. All study participants completed self-report questionnaires before and after the training. Results The IMP training was considered highly acceptable and very useful. The training had a significant positive effect on self-compassion, empathy and compassion fatigue, but no effect on mindfulness, stress and compassion satisfaction. Five participants reported some mild adverse reactions. Conclusions The IMP training appears feasible for health care professionals and seems to induce some positive effects. A few mild adverse effects were reported. Further research on the effectiveness and possible mechanisms of change of the IMP training in larger samples is needed.

Abstract
Burnout is critical for oncology professionals, affecting quality of life and performance at work. Alexithymia and empathy are personality traits influencing the capacity to cope with stress. Alexithymia increases burnout among medical physicists with a negative impact at work. Higher level of empathy are correlated to a better professional quality of life. This data may help identifying subjects at risk to implement preventive strategies.
Background and purpose The professional quality of life of radiation oncology professionals can be influenced by different contributing factors, including personality traits. Alexithymia involves deficits in emotion processing and awareness. Empathy is the ability to understand another’s ‘state of mind/emotion’. We investigated professional quality of life, including burnout, in radiation oncology, exploring the role of alexithymia and empathy and targeting the population of medical physicists (MPs), since this professional category is usually underrepresented in surveys exploring professional well-being in radiation oncology and MPs may experience professional distress given the increasing complexity of multimodal cancer care. Material and methods An online survey was addressed to ESTRO members. Participants filled out three questionnaires to evaluate alexithymia, empathy and professional quality of life: a) Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20); b) Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI); c) Professional Quality of Life Scale (ProQoL). Professional quality of life as per ProQoL was considered as dependent variable. The three domains of the ProQoL, namely compassion satisfaction (CS), secondary traumatic stress (STS) and burnout were correlated with alexithymia (as per TAS-20) and empathy (as per IRI with three subcategories: empathic concern, perspective taking and personal distress) and demographic/professional characteristics as independent variables. Generalized linear modeling was used. Significant covariates on univariate linear regression analysis were included in the multivariate linear regression model. Results A total of 308 medical physicists completed all questionnaires. Alexithymia as per TAS-20 was correlated to decreased CS (β = −0.25, p < 0 0.001), increased likelihood for STS (β = 0.26, p < 0 0.001) and burnout (β = 0.47, p < 0 0.001). With respect to empathy, the ‘Empatic Concern’ subscale of the IRI was found to be a significant predictor for increased CS (β = 0.19, p = 0 0.001) and increased STS (β = 0.19, p < 0 0.001), without significant correlation with burnout. The individual’s perception of being valued by own’s supervisor was correlated to increased CS (β = 0.23, p < 0.001), and decreased burnout (β = −0.29, p < 0.001). Conclusions Alexithymic personality trait increased the likelihood to develop burnout, with less professional satisfaction amongst MPs working in radiation oncology. Empathy results in higher professional fulfilment. These results may be used to benchmark preventing strategies, including peer support, debriefing sessions, leadership initiatives and work-load limitation strategies.

Abstract
Objective To explore the relationship between nursing professional values and ethical climate and nurses’ professional quality of life. Methods The present study is a descriptive, cross-sectional work in which 400 nurses from various wards of hospitals in the south-east of Iran were studied. Data were collected using a questionnaire consisting of four sections: demographics, Nurses’ Professional Values Scale-Revised (NPVS-R), the Hospital Ethical Climate Survey (HECS), and the Professional Quality of Life Scale (ProQOL). Results The total mean scores for professional values were 105.29 ± 15.60. The total mean score for the ethical climate was 100.09 ± 17.11. The mean scores for the indexes of compassion satisfaction, burnout, and secondary traumatic stress were 45.29 ± 8.93, 34.38 ± 6.84, and 32.15 ± 7.02 respectively. The relationships between professional values and the indexes of compassion satisfaction (r = 0.56), burnout (r = 0.26), and secondary traumatic stress (r = 0.18) were found to be positive and significant (P < 0.001). Also, the relationships between ethical climate and the items of compassion satisfaction (r = 0.60, P < 0.001), burnout (r = 0.15, P = 0.002) were found to be positive and significant. Conclusion An understanding of nurses’ perception of professional values and improving the ethical climate at work can help nursing administrators identify more effective strategies toward increasing compassion satisfaction and lessening burnout and work-related stress.

Abstract
In the last years, in Italy, Extraordinary Reception Centres have been set up to meet the primary and secondary needs of asylum seekers landing on the Mediterranean coast. After the opening of the ERCs, a new professional body, the reception professionals, has been formed in the national territory. According to the context and the goals of the ERC, at the beginning no specific training was required, so their professional profile derived from the different background. Considering their institutional task, such as facilitating the reception and the full care of asylum seekers, the reception professionals are daily involved in the relationship with the respondents and exposed to their traumatic stories or symptoms. In fact, asylum seekers are people who are often deeply traumatized by past experiences, by the journey, but also disoriented and unprepared for the complex experience of reception and integration, wich influence the climate and quality of professional life of reception professionals. As happen in helping professionals continuously exposed to stressful or traumatic events, also in the work of helping for and welcoming asylum seekers there is a high risk of developing the negative symptoms associated with Burnout and vicarious trauma. Although, in the last twenty years, the quality of professional life has been extensively studied in several areas, there are no studies that explore this issue among professionals in the field of reception. In this study, the questionnaire ProQOL 5 was submitted to the reception professionals of the Extraordinary Reception Centres of Parma and its province, actively involved in helping relationship with asylum seekers, with the aim of defining the state of psychosocial well-being and their quality of professional life. Although it has been shown that on average reception professionals report good satisfaction in carrying out their work, three profiles have emerged. The first group reports a higher level of Burnout, the second group a greater Compassion Satisfaction and the third group, instead, a higher level of Burnout and Secondary Traumatic Stress. The data obtained allow to partially fill a gap in the literature. Moreover, the results suggest the need of interventions of prevention and management of organizations, in order to promote the psychosocial well-being of this emerging professional body.

Abstract
PURPOSE The Formosa Fun Coast Explosion was a major public disaster that caused international shock. Nursing staff made an all-out effort to care for patients injured in the explosion, and this may have caused a lot of stress among nurses. This study aimed to explore the predictors of professional quality of life among nursing staff experiencing major disaster events. MATERIAL AND METHODS This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in a medical center in Northern Taiwan in 2016. A total of 165 nurses were enrolled using convenience sampling. Data were collected on the demographic- and work-related characteristics of nurses, and the Perceived Stress Scale and Professional Quality of Life Scale were administered. Analyses included descriptive statistics and regression. The threshold for statistical significance was set at p<0.05. RESULTS The nurses' length of service in nursing (β=-0.26, p=0.029) and perceived stress level (β=0.15, p=0.002) were important predictors of compassion satisfaction, while their age (β=0.42, p=0.033) and perceived stress level (β=0.20, p=0.020) were important predictors of compassion fatigue. Compassion fatigue was divided into burnout and secondary trauma. Nurses' age (β=0.18, p=0.044) and perceived stress level (β=0.14, p<0.001) were the key predictors of burnout. However, there were no significant predictors of secondary trauma among nurses. CONCLUSIONS Based on the present findings, it is proposed to reduce the level of stress among nurses to improve their professional quality of life.

Abstract
Professional quality of life (ProQOL) is affected by and affects professional well-being and performance. The objectives of this study are to identify risk factors of ProQOL among EM physicians in Zagazig University hospitals (ZUHs), to detect the relationship between ProQOL and coping strategies, and to measure the implication of the Worksite Wellness Education (WWE) program on improving knowledge skills, ProQOL, and coping. An intervention study was conducted among 108 EM physicians at ZUHs through two stages: assessing ProQOL subscales (CS, BO, and STS) and coping strategies and conducting the WWE program. A pre-post-test design was used in the evaluation. CS was higher among the older age group, smokers, nighttime sleepers, and hobbies' practitioners. Coping strategies carried out by EM physicians to overcome stress and their ProQOL scores were improved significantly post program. ProQOL has multiple factors that affect it. Applying the WWE program will address this concept and may raise awareness about how to cope with work stressors.

Abstract
Medical trainees are at high risk for developing burnout. Introducing trainees to the risks of burnout and supporting identification and proactive responses to their 'warning' signs of compassion fatigue (CF) is critical in building resiliency. The authors developed and evaluated a burnout and CF program for third year trainees at a Canadian Medical School. Of 165 medical trainees who participated in the burnout and CF program, 59 (36%) provided evaluation and feedback of the program and its impact throughout their year. Participation included self-utilization of a validated CF and burnout tool (ProQOL) across three time-points, workshop feedback, and focus group participation. Results highlighted the importance of 1) Recognizing Individual Signs & Symptoms of Stress, CF and Burnout; 2) Normalizing Stress, CF and Burnout for Students and Physicians; 3) Learning to Manage One's Own Stress. A decrease in compassion satisfaction and increase in burnout between beginning and end of third year were found. Further outcomes highlighted the importance of learning, living and surviving CF and burnout in clerkship. Emergent theory reveals the important responsibility educators have to integrate CF and burnout programs into 'the sweet spot' that third year offers, as trainees shift from theoretical to experiential practice as future clinicians.

Abstract
ABSTRACTBackground:Exposure to the death and dying of others is an anxiety-provoking condition that can contribute to psychological stress. However, the results of empirical studies that evaluated work-related outcomes among physicians and nurses with repeated exposure to dying patients are not consistent. OBJECTIVE Our aim was to evaluate whether a high level of exposure to death and dying (LED) can increase the risk for poor professional quality of life (ProQoL) in most healthcare workers, but it can also improve ProQoL in a subset of healthcare workers with specific characteristics. METHOD We employed a cross-sectional survey designed to better understand the role of LED as a predictor of ProQoL among healthcare workers. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS Comparison of physicians and nurses with high LED (home-based palliative care units) with a matched group of physicians and nurses with low LED (primary care units) and evaluation of possible interaction effects among LED, death anxiety (DA), and engagement as predictors of ProQoL. RESULTS The final sample included 110 questionnaires from the high-LED group (response rate = 39%) and 131 from the low-LED (response rate = 24%) group. Workers with high LED reported an increased level of compassion satisfaction (CS) and low to moderate levels of burnout (BU) and secondary traumatic stress (STS), with no significant differences with respect to other healthcare providers. Although levels of CS, STS, and BU did not differ between groups, a univariate MANOVA revealed that the interaction effect of LED × Engagement reduced levels of CS and that the interaction effect of LED × DA increased STS among workers with high LED. SIGNIFICANCE OF RESULTS LED was significantly correlated with ProQoL among healthcare workers with high LED due to the reported interaction effect. These findings imply, for the first time, that there is a possible correlation between engagement and the risk for poor ProQoL among workers with high LED. Further research is essential to gain a better understanding of this issue.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the professional quality of life and associated factors among Ugandan midwives working in Mubende and Mityana rural district to recommend interventions to improve professional well-being and outcomes of midwifery care. BACKGROUND Professional quality of life of midwives working in rural areas may be influenced by several personal and work setting factors of care professionals often impacting the quality and outcomes of patient care. METHODS A cross-sectional study design was used to collect data from 224 midwives working in two rural districts of Uganda. FINDINGS The majority of participants were female (80 %), with an associate degree in midwifery (92 %). The mean age and years of experience were 34 ± 6.3 and 4 ± 2.1 years, respectively. The mean scores on the professional quality of life scale showed average compassionate satisfaction (19 ± 4.88), burnout (36.9 ± 6.22) and secondary traumatic stress (22.9 ± 6.69). The midwives' compassion satisfaction was related to psychological well-being (p < 0.01) and job satisfaction (p < 0.01). Conversely, their burnout levels and secondary traumatic stress were associated with education level (p < 0.01), marital status (p < 0.01), involvement in non-midwifery health care activities (p < 0.01), and physical well-being (p < 0.01). CONCLUSION AND IMPLICATION TO PRACTICE: Midwives working in rural areas of resource-poor countries have moderate professional quality of life and tend to experience moderate to high levels of burnout, secondary traumatic stress and compassion satisfaction in their professional work. Therefore, employers need to provide deliberate work based services such as counselling, debriefing, training and social support to enhance midwives professional quality of life and quality of midwifery care and practice.

Abstract
Background To date, studies on the outcomes of a shared war reality among mental health professionals (MHPs) in southern Israel have focused only on those residing and working in Otef Gaza. The aim of this study is to determine the impact of different exposure levels to shared trauma on the professional quality of life of MHPs in southern Israel. This study compares the level of secondary traumatic stress, burnout, and compassion satisfaction of social workers from Otef Gaza to social workers living and working in the Beer-Sheva area who experience occasional missile attacks. Methods The Professional Quality of Life Scale was used to examine the level of secondary traumatic stress, burnout, and compassion satisfaction of 125 social workers living and working in the Negev: 72 from Beer-Sheva and 53 from the regional councils of Otef Gaza. Results No statistically significant differences were found in the three professional quality of life variables between the Otef-Gaza and Beer-Sheva groups. Conclusions The lack of secondary traumatic stress and burnout differences between the study groups, despite the chronic exposure to terror attacks among the Otef Gaza social workers, may be explained by the strong sense of belonging and support evidenced by many Otef Gaza residents as well as by the comprehensive trauma training MHPs receive for work in the region. The results of this study are important for health policy geared to trauma prevention efforts, moderating the effects of work under shared war reality, and promoting the professional quality of life of MHPs in conflict areas.

Abstract
The application of required communication skills in the palliative dialogue necessitates a significant transition from the paternalistic medical approach to the holistic psychosocial approach that focuses on the patient and views the individual as a whole entity. Understanding the evolution of a therapeutic relationship in terms of entrance into the relationship, development, maintenance, and leave taking as well as the adoption of dialectical ideas gives palliative caregivers flexibility in the dialogue with patients and families. Accepting the principles of dialectics, in which the existence of contradictions is seen as an inherent part of a reality that is undergoing constant change, gives the caregiver the flexibility to interpret dichotomic thoughts and emotions as a dialectic failure and, in accordance, to move toward a synthesis of the ideas of living and dying. This approach provides caregivers the means to promote the palliative dialogue, implement varied communication skills to clarify the patient's goals, and implement a therapeutic plan to realize them.
