Endogenous Nb2CTx/Nb2O5 Schottky heterostructures for superior lithium-ion storage

Schottky heterostructures have significant advantages for exciting charge transfer kinetics at material interfaces. In this work, endogenous Nb2CTx/Nb2O5 Schottky heterostructures with a large active surface area were constructed using an in-situ architectural strategy. The semiconductor Nb2O5 has a low work function, and during the construction of Nb2CTx/Nb2O5 Schottky heterostructures, there was an interfacial electron transfer, which resulted in a built-in electric field. The electrochemical reaction kinetics of Nb2CTx/Nb2O5 Schottky heterostructures were enhanced due to the rapid transfer of charge driven by the electric field. The Nb2CTx/Nb2O5 Schottky heterostructures have a large active surface area, which contributes to excellent electrolyte diffusion kinetics. Therefore, Nb2CTx/Nb2O5 Schottky heterostructures have excellent lithium-ion storage capacity with 575 mAh/g after 200 cycles at 0.10 A/g, and 290 mAh/g after 1000 cycles at 2.00 A/g, without capacity fading. Furthermore, in-situ X-ray diffraction and ex-situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses reveal the mechanisms for structure evolution and lithium-ion storage optimization of Nb2CTx/Nb2O5 Schottky heterostructures during the electrochemical reaction. The construction of Schottky heterostructures with excited charge transport kinetics provides a novel idea for optimizing the lithium-ion storage activity of MXenes materials.

Constructing Co@TiO2 Nanoarray Heterostructure with Schottky Contact for Selective Electrocatalytic Nitrate Reduction to Ammonia

Electrochemical nitrate (NO₃ ^- ) reduction reaction (NO₃ ^- RR) is a potential sustainable route for large-scale ambient ammonia (NH₃ ) synthesis and regulating the nitrogen cycle. However, as this reaction involves multi-electron transfer steps, it urgently needs efficient electrocatalysts on promoting NH₃  selectivity. Herein, a rational design of Co nanoparticles anchored on TiO₂  nanobelt array on titanium plate (Co@TiO₂ /TP) is presented as a high-efficiency electrocatalyst for NO₃ ^- RR. Density theory calculations demonstrate that the constructed Schottky heterostructures coupling metallic Co with semiconductor TiO₂  develop a built-in electric field, which can accelerate the rate determining step and facilitate NO₃ ^- adsorption, ensuring the selective conversion to NH₃ . Expectantly, the Co@TiO₂ /TP electrocatalyst attains an excellent Faradaic efficiency of 96.7% and a high NH₃  yield of 800.0 µmol h^-1  cm^-2  under neutral solution. More importantly, Co@TiO₂ /TP heterostructure catalyst also presents a remarkable stability in 50-h electrolysis test.

Directing Charge Transfer in a Chemical-Bonded BaTiO3 @ReS2 Schottky Heterojunction for Piezoelectric Enhanced Photocatalysis

The piezo-assisted photocatalysis system, which can utilize solar energy and mechanical energy simulteneously, is promising but still challenging in the environmental remediation field. In this work, a novel metal-semiconductor BaTiO₃ @ReS₂ Schottky heterostructure is designed and it shows high-efficiency on piezo-assisted photocatalytic molecular oxygen activation. By combining experiment and calculation results, the distorted metal-phase ReS₂ nanosheets are found to be closely anchored on the surface of the BaTiO₃ nanorods, through interfacial ReO covalent bonds. The Schottky heterostructure not only forms electron-transfer channels but also exhibits enhanced oxygen activation capacity, which are helpful to produce more superoxide radicals. The polarization field induced by the piezoelectric BaTiO₃ can lower the Schottky barrier and thus reduce the transfer resistance of photogenerated electrons directing to the ReS₂ . As a result of the synergy effect between the two components, the BaTiO₃ @ReS₂ exhibits untrahigh activity for degradation of pollutants with an apparent rate constant of 0.133 min^-1 for piezo-assisted photocatalysis, which is 16.6 and 2.44 times as that of piezocatalysis and photocatalysis, respectively. This performance is higher than most reported BaTiO₃ -based piezo-assisted photocatalysis systems. This work paves the way for the design of high-efficiency piezo-assisted photocatalytic materials for environmental remediation through using green energies in nature.
