Societal Attitudes Towards Autism (SATA): Validation of the Greek Version in the General Population

This study examined the validity of the Greek version of the Societal Attitudes Towards Autism (SATA) scale in a Greek community sample (n = 633) and explored how the demographic variables of the sample modulate knowledge and attitudes regarding people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The principal component analysis confirmed the three-dimension model and explained 40.5% of the variance. All Cronbach's alpha values obtained were over 0.70. SATA's subscales were significantly and positively correlated, indicating good internal reliability. Participants presented moderate knowledge about ASD and mediocre positive attitudes towards people with ASD. Gender, age, and educational level significantly affected SATA total scores. Overall, this Greek version of SATA showed acceptable psychometric properties, indicating that can be a reliable scale for use.

Functioning in patients with schizophrenia: A multicentre study evaluating the clinical perspective

Using the WHO International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) as a frame of reference, this study identifies the most common problems of functioning and the environmental factors that are experienced by patients with schizophrenia. An empirical cross-sectional multicentre study was conducted. Data were collected using a case record form, rated by health professionals, that contained 133 ICF categories and which also gathered clinical and sociodemographic information. A total of 127 patients with schizophrenia participated. The categories with a higher prevalence of impairment in the Body functions component were related to mental functions [e.g. b164 Higher-level cognitive functions (97.6%), b152 Emotional functions (88.2%)]. Patients also showed impairment in several categories from the Activities and participation component, reflecting restrictions and limitations in several challenging everyday activities such as solving problems (77.2%), handling stress (87.4%), looking after one's health (63.8%), informal social relationships (70.9%), economic self-sufficiency (68.5%), and leisure (79.5%). Environmental factors were most frequently scored as facilitators. Support from family (94.5%) and health professionals (99.2%), together with antipsychotic medication (96.9%) and social (85.0%) and health services (95.3%), were the most common factors for people with schizophrenia. Our study identified the most common problems in functioning and the environmental factors that are experienced by persons with schizophrenia. This kind of comprehensive approach to the assessment of functioning in schizophrenia could help to shape interventions for improving functioning in this population.

How do young people in Cambodia perceive the impact of societal attitudes, media and religion on suicidal behaviour?

BACKGROUND

Young people in low and middle income countries (LMICs) in societal transitions with rapidly changing norms face an increased risk of suicide. This study explores how young people in Cambodia understand the impact on suicidal behaviour from societal attitudes, media and religion.

MATERIAL

Focus group discussions were held with school students from a suburban area. Thematic analysis was used to interpret the data.

DISCUSSION

Participants perceived the prevailing suicide-stigmatizing societal attitudes, the double-edged media and suicide-ambiguity in Buddhist religion as challenging. Globalization was recognized as contradicting with traditional Cambodian norms and values.

CONCLUSION

Suicide prevention programmes should take into consideration the complex picture of suicide that young people are exposed to.

"How did that happen?" Public responses to women with mobility disability during pregnancy

BACKGROUND

Little is known about current societal attitudes toward women with significant mobility disability who are visibly pregnant.

OBJECTIVE

To use qualitative descriptive analysis methods to examine perceptions of women with significant mobility disability about how strangers reacted to their visible pregnancies.

METHODS

In late 2013, we conducted 2-h telephone interviews with 22 women with significant mobility difficulties who had delivered babies within the prior 10 years. The semi-structured, open-ended interview protocol addressed wide-ranging pregnancy-related topics, including statements from strangers. Most participants were recruited through social networks, coming from 17 states nationwide. We used NVivo to sort the texts for content analysis.

RESULTS

The women's mean (standard deviation) age was 34.8 (5.3) years; most were white, well-educated, and higher income, although half had Medicaid during their pregnancies; and 18 used wheeled mobility aids. Eighteen women described memorable interactions with strangers relating to their pregnancies or newborn babies. Strangers' statements fell into six categories: (1) curious; (2) intrusively and persistently curious; (3) hostile, including concerns that taxpayers would end up supporting the mother and child; (4) questioning woman's competence as a potential parent; (5) oblivious, not recognizing visible pregnancy or motherhood; and (6) positive. Many women reported strangers asking how their pregnancy had happened. The women doubted that visibly pregnant women without disabilities evoke the same reactions from strangers.

CONCLUSIONS

Women with mobility disability who are visibly pregnant may perceive reactions from strangers that appear intrusive. Planning ahead for handling such encounters could reduce the stresses of these interactions.
