Use of super resolution reconstruction MRI for surgical planning in Placenta accreta spectrum disorder: Case series

INTRODUCTION

Comprehensive imaging using ultrasound and MRI of placenta accreta spectrum (PAS) aims to prevent catastrophic haemorrhage and maternal death. Standard MRI of the placenta is limited by between-slice motion which can be mitigated by super-resolution reconstruction (SRR) MRI. We applied SRR in suspected PAS cases to determine its ability to enhance anatomical placental assessment and predict adverse maternal outcome.

METHODS

Suspected PAS patients (n = 22) underwent MRI at a gestational age (weeks + days) of (32+3±3+2, range (27+1-38+6)). SRR of the placental-myometrial-bladder interface involving rigid motion correction of acquired MRI slices combined with robust outlier detection to reconstruct an isotropic high-resolution volume, was achieved in twelve. 2D MRI or SRR images alone, and paired data were assessed by four radiologists in three review rounds. All radiologists were blinded to results of the ultrasound, original MR image reports, case outcomes, and PAS diagnosis. A Random Forest Classification model was used to highlight the most predictive pathological MRI markers for major obstetric haemorrhage (MOH), bladder adherence (BA), and placental attachment depth (PAD).

RESULTS

At delivery, four patients had placenta praevia with no abnormal attachment, two were clinically diagnosed with PAS, and six had histopathological PAS confirmation. Pathological MRI markers (T2-dark intraplacental bands, and loss of retroplacental T2-hypointense line) predicting MOH were more visible using SRR imaging (accuracy 0.73), in comparison to 2D MRI or paired imaging. Bladder wall interruption, predicting BA, was only easily detected by paired imaging (accuracy 0.72). Better detection of certain pathological markers predicting PAD was found using 2D MRI (placental bulge and myometrial thinning (accuracy 0.81)), and SRR (loss of retroplacental T2-hypointense line (accuracy 0.82)).

DISCUSSION

The addition of SRR to 2D MRI potentially improved anatomical assessment of certain pathological MRI markers of abnormal placentation that predict maternal morbidity which may benefit surgical planning.

Rapid microscopic 3D-diffusion tensor imaging fiber-tracking of mouse brain in vivo by super resolution reconstruction: validation on MAP6-KO mouse model

OBJECT

Exploring mouse brains by rapid 3D-Diffusion Tensor Imaging (3D-DTI) of high spatial resolution (HSR) is challenging in vivo. Here we use the super resolution reconstruction (SRR) postprocessing method to demonstrate its performance on Microtubule-Associated-Protein6 Knock-Out (MAP6-KO) mice.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Two spin-echo DTI were acquired (9.4T, CryoProbe RF-coil): (i)-multislice 2D-DTI, (echo-planar integrating reversed-gradient) acquired in vivo in the three orthogonal orientations (360 μm slice-thickness, 120 × 120 μm in-plane resolution, 56 min scan duration); used in SRR software to reconstruct SRR 3D-DTI with HSR in slice-plane (120 × 120 × 120 µm) and (ii)-microscopic 3D-DTI (µ-3D-DTI), (100 × 100 × 100 µm; 8 h 6 min) on fixed-brains ex vivo, that were removed after paramagnetic contrast-agent injection to accelerate scan acquisition using short repetition-times without NMR-signal sensitivity loss.

RESULTS

White-matter defects, quantified from both 3D-DTI fiber-tracking were found very similar. Indeed, as expected the fornix and cerebral-peduncle volume losses were - 39% and - 35% in vivo (SRR 3D-DTI) versus - 34% and - 32% ex vivo (µ-3D-DTI), respectively (p<0.001). This finding is robust since the µ-3D-DTI feasibility on MAP6-KO ex vivo was already validated by fluorescent-microscopy of cleared brains.

DISCUSSION

First performance of the SRR to generate rapid HSR 3D-DTI of mouse brains in vivo is demonstrated. The method is suitable in neurosciences for longitudinal studies to identify molecular and genetic abnormalities in mouse models that are of growing developments.

Super resolution reconstruction of CT images based on multi-scale attention mechanism

CT diagnosis has been widely used in clinic because of its special diagnostic value. The image resolution of CT imaging system is constrained by X-ray focus size, detector element spacing, reconstruction algorithm and other factors, which makes the generated CT image have some problems, such as low contrast, insufficient high-frequency information, poor perceptual quality and so on. To solve the above problems, a super-resolution reconstruction method of CT image based on multi-scale attention mechanism is proposed. First, use a 3 × 3 and a 1 × 1 convolution layer extracting shallow features. In order to better extract the high-frequency features of CT images and improve the image contrast, a multi-scale attention module is designed to adaptively detect the information of different scales, improve the expression ability of features, integrate the channel attention mechanism and spatial attention mechanism, and pay more attention to important information, retain more valuable information. Finally, sub-pixel convolution is used to improve the resolution of CT image and reconstruct high-resolution CT image. The experimental results show that this method can effectively improve the CT image contrast and suppress the noise. The peak signal-to-noise ratio and structural similarity of the reconstructed CT image are better than the comparison method, and has a good subjective visual effect.

A joint compressed-sensing and super-resolution approach for very high-resolution diffusion imaging

Diffusion MRI (dMRI) can provide invaluable information about the structure of different tissue types in the brain. Standard dMRI acquisitions facilitate a proper analysis (e.g. tracing) of medium-to-large white matter bundles. However, smaller fiber bundles connecting very small cortical or sub-cortical regions cannot be traced accurately in images with large voxel sizes. Yet, the ability to trace such fiber bundles is critical for several applications such as deep brain stimulation and neurosurgery. In this work, we propose a novel acquisition and reconstruction scheme for obtaining high spatial resolution dMRI images using multiple low resolution (LR) images, which is effective in reducing acquisition time while improving the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The proposed method called compressed-sensing super resolution reconstruction (CS-SRR), uses multiple overlapping thick-slice dMRI volumes that are under-sampled in q-space to reconstruct diffusion signal with complex orientations. The proposed method combines the twin concepts of compressed sensing and super-resolution to model the diffusion signal (at a given b-value) in a basis of spherical ridgelets with total-variation (TV) regularization to account for signal correlation in neighboring voxels. A computationally efficient algorithm based on the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) is introduced for solving the CS-SRR problem. The performance of the proposed method is quantitatively evaluated on several in-vivo human data sets including a true SRR scenario. Our experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method can be used for reconstructing sub-millimeter super resolution dMRI data with very good data fidelity in clinically feasible acquisition time.
