Structural abnormalities in the Fronto-Parietal Network: Linking white matter integrity to sustained attention deficits in Schizophrenia

Schizophrenia is associated with a range of cognitive deficits, among which impairments in sustained attention are particularly significant. Previous research has investigated functional changes in the fronto-parietal network (FPN) related to attentional control in schizophrenia. However, the role of structural connectivity within the FPN in sustained attention deficits remains under-explored. Utilizing diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), this study investigated white matter integrity in 75 participants, comprising 37 individuals with schizophrenia (SZ) and 38 healthy controls (HC). Psychomotor vigilance task (PVT) performance was assessed to gauge sustained attention. The SZ group showed a significant reduction in fractional anisotropy (FA) and streamline counts within white matter tracts connecting frontal and parietal regions, compared to the HC group. Further, significant negative correlations were found between PVT performance and white matter integrity measures within the SZ group, specifically in the left FPN. Our findings indicate that structural abnormalities in the FPN are associated with sustained attention deficits in schizophrenia. These results contribute to our understanding of the neurobiological mechanisms underlying cognitive impairments in schizophrenia and offer potential avenues for targeted therapeutic interventions. Further research is warranted to validate these outcomes and explore their clinical implications.

Lost in Time: Temporal Monitoring Elicits Clinical Decrements in Sustained Attention Post-Stroke

OBJECTIVES

Mental fatigue, 'brain fog', and difficulties maintaining engagement are commonly reported issues in a range of neurological and psychiatric conditions. Traditional sustained attention tasks commonly measure this capacity as the ability to detect target stimuli based on sensory features in the auditory or visual domains. However, with this approach, discrete target stimuli may exogenously capture attention to aid detection, thereby masking deficits in the ability to endogenously sustain attention over time.

METHODS

To address this, we developed the Continuous Temporal Expectancy Task (CTET) where individuals continuously monitor a stream of patterned stimuli alternating at a fixed temporal interval (690 ms) and detect an infrequently occurring target stimulus defined by a prolonged temporal duration (1020 ms or longer). As such, sensory properties of target and non-target stimuli are perceptually identical and differ only in temporal duration. Using the CTET, we assessed stroke survivors with unilateral right hemisphere damage (N = 14), a cohort in which sustained attention deficits have been extensively reported.

RESULTS

Stroke survivors had overall lower target detection accuracy compared with neurologically healthy age-matched older controls (N = 18). Critically, stroke survivors performance was characterised by significantly steeper within-block performance decrements, which occurred within short temporal windows (˜3 ½ min), and were restored by the break periods between blocks.

CONCLUSIONS

These findings suggest that continuous temporal monitoring taxes sustained attention processes to capture clinical deficits in this capacity over time, and outline a precise measure of the endogenous processes hypothesised to underpin sustained attention deficits following right hemisphere stroke.

Validating a visual version of the metronome response task

The metronome response task (MRT)-a sustained-attention task that requires participants to produce a response in synchrony with an audible metronome-was recently developed to index response variability in the context of studies on mind wandering. In the present studies, we report on the development and validation of a visual version of the MRT (the visual metronome response task; vMRT), which uses the rhythmic presentation of visual, rather than auditory, stimuli. Participants completed the vMRT (Studies 1 and 2) and the original (auditory-based) MRT (Study 2) while also responding to intermittent thought probes asking them to report the depth of their mind wandering. The results showed that (1) individual differences in response variability during the vMRT are highly reliable; (2) prior to thought probes, response variability increases with increasing depth of mind wandering; (3) response variability is highly consistent between the vMRT and the original MRT; and (4) both response variability and depth of mind wandering increase with increasing time on task. Our results indicate that the original MRT findings are consistent across the visual and auditory modalities, and that the response variability measured in both tasks indexes a non-modality-specific tendency toward behavioral variability. The vMRT will be useful in the place of the MRT in experimental contexts in which researchers' designs require a visual-based primary task.

The Effect of 20 Minutes Scuba Diving on Cognitive Function of Professional Scuba Divers

BACKGROUND

Physical activity increases the performance of the nervous system by stimulating the body's metabolism and improving the efficiency of the ATP production system.

OBJECTIVES

In the present study, the effect of twenty minutes scuba diving in high depth (10m) on cognitive function and stress system activity was investigated.

METHODS

Twelve professional scuba divers with a mean age of 23 ± 1 year, weight of 80 ± 2.5 kg and height of 1.79 ± 3.5 cm resident in the city of Mashhad participated in the test. Their cognitive functions were measured 60 min before and 20 min after diving and the data were evaluated using the PASAT software. In the present study, parameters such as general mental health, sustained attention, average response speed, and mental fatigue were measured. Moreover, in order to determine the activity of the stress system, their salivary cortisol was collected before and after diving.

RESULTS

Results revealed that, the general mental health of these scuba divers was normal and it did not undergo a remarkable change after diving. Their average response speed and sustained attention had a significant decrease after scuba diving. Mental fatigue after diving increased. Also, salivary cortisol level significantly increased after diving.

CONCLUSIONS

According to our data, it seems that scuba diving as stress stimulant increases cortisol level and therefore reduces cognitive performance after diving.
