Ecological evolution during the three-year restoration using rhizosphere soil cover method at a Lead-Zinc tailing pond in Karst areas

A major challenge for the restoration of the Lead-Zinc tailing pond in Karst areas lies in how to establish vegetation with less soil and restore the ecological functions of the substrate. In this study, a novel method, rhizosphere soil cover method (RSC), was applied to recover the vegetation at a Pb-Zn tailing pond in Karst areas. Two local tolerate plants, Miscanthus sinensis and Pueraria phaseoloides, were planted as pioneer species. Although 68 % of the tailing pond was not covered with soil, the vegetation coverage has reached over 90 % after restoration for three years. Compared with the natural revegetation process (vegetation coverage was <5 % after 20 years of natural succession), the revegetation in the tailing pond was accelerated by RSC and planting pioneer species. Both the plant's diversity and richness have significantly increased in the tailings pond during the restoration (p < 0.05). The important value indicators of M. sinensis and P. phaseoloides were the highest in the plant community, indicating the dominant role of these two plants in revegetation. Moreover, the total organic carbon, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, and total potassium in the tailings increased annually (p < 0.05), which demonstrated that the revegetation has improved the chemical properties in the substrate. In addition, the Shannon diversity index of bacteria in the tailings increased significantly from 4.11 to 5.51. The relative abundance of microbial genes related to carbon fixation and nitrogen fixation in the tailings increased by 17 % and 43 %, respectively. Meanwhile, the physicochemical properties, microbial community structure, and nutrient cycling function in the tailings without topsoil were improved more obviously than those in soils. It is thereby concluded that RSC is an efficient means for ecological restoration of the tailing ponds in Karst areas to improve the ecosystem structure and function of Pb-Zn tailings.

Heavy Metal Sources, Contamination and Risk Assessment in Legacy Pb/Zn Mining Tailings Area: Field Soil and Simulated Rainfall

This study investigated heavy metal(HM) soil pollution and evaluated the risk and sources at a legacy tailings pond's area in Meizhou, China. Result shows that HM accumulation in soil, particularly Cd, Pb, and Zn, were serious. Zn and Cd in tailing soil and all studied elements in field soil had a significant release potential. Four HM sources were identified by positive matrix factorization (PMF) model: cinder and vehicle emissions (11.3%), natural sources (16.3%), tailings pond and human activities (32.8%), tailings pond (39.7%). The soil was severely polluted with Cd, Pb, and Zn, which posed a high potential environmental risk near surrounding area. Column leaching tests showed that large quantities of HMs were released from the tailings soil during simulated rainfall with different pH. This study indicates that the study area has been severely polluted and continues to have a great risk of HM pollution under natural conditions.

Strengths and Weaknesses of a Hybrid Post-disaster Management Approach: the Doce River (Brazil) Mine-Tailing Dam Burst

Mine-tailing dam bursts occur frequently with attendant implications for the environment and human populations. Institutional preparedness for such events plays an important role in their lasting impact. This study analyzes the stakeholder engagement in the new governance framework created to recover the Doce River ecosystem following the 2015 disaster, where 34 million m³ of tailings were released, killing 19 people and causing massive impacts on riverine life. Following the disaster, poorly conceived political and management decisions impeded and continue to impede the progress of ecosystem recovery. The post-event management structure shows a centralized and poorly diverse stakeholder pool. We conclude that poor governance structure, and weak law enforcement, are among the main reasons preventing the Doce River post-disaster watershed recovery. A watershed vulnerability analysis combining dam stability and socioeconomic data, concluded that low ratings of socioeconomic performance substantially increase basin vulnerability. We recommend that the watershed committee should be fully involved in the implementation of the program and take a central role so that the most vulnerable communities (including indigenous people) take ownership of ecosystem recovery.

Environmental building policy by the use of microalgae and decreasing of risks for Canadian oil sand sector development

Environmental building recommendations aimed towards new environmental policies and management-changing decisions which as example demonstrated in consideration of the problems of Canadian oil sands operators. For the implementation of the circular economic strategy, we use an in-depth analysis of reported environmental after-consequence on all stages of the production process. The study addressed the promotion of innovative solutions for greenhouse gas emission, waste mitigation, and risk of falling in oil prices for operators of oil sands with creating market opportunities. They include the addition of microalgae biomass in tailings ponds for improvement of the microbial balance for the water speedily cleaning, recycling, and reusing with mitigation of GHG emissions. The use of food scraps for the nutrition of microalgae will reduce greenhouse gas emission minimally, on 0.33 MtCO₂eq for Alberta and 2.63 MtCO₂eq/year for Canada. Microalgae-derived biofuel can reduce this emission for Alberta on 11.9-17.9 MtCO₂eq and for Canada on 71-106 MtCO₂eq/year, and the manufacturing of other products will adsorb up to 135.6 MtCO₂ and produce 99.2 MtO₂. The development of the Live Conserve Industry and principal step from non-efficient protection of the environment to its cultivation in a large scale with mitigation of GHG emission and waste as well as generating of O₂ and value-added products by the use of microalgae opens an important shift towards a new design and building of a biological system.
