Interval type-2 Fuzzy control and stochastic modeling of COVID-19 spread based on vaccination and social distancing rates

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE

Besides efforts on vaccine discovery, robust and intuitive government policies could also significantly influence the pandemic state. However, such policies require realistic virus spread models, and the major works on COVID-19 to date have been only case-specific and use deterministic models. Additionally, when a disease affects large portions of the population, countries develop extensive infrastructures to contain the condition that should adapt continuously and extend the healthcare system's capabilities. An accurate mathematical model that reasonably addresses these complex treatment/population dynamics and their corresponding environmental uncertainties is necessary for making appropriate and robust strategic decisions.

METHODS

Here, we propose an interval type-2 fuzzy stochastic modeling and control strategy to deal with the realistic uncertainties of pandemics and manage the size of the infected population. For this purpose, we first modify a previously established COVID-19 model with definite parameters to a Stochastic SEIAR (S²EIAR) approach with uncertain parameters and variables. Next, we propose to use normalized inputs, rather than the usual parameter settings in the previous case-specific studies, hence offering a more generalized control structure. Furthermore, we examine the proposed genetic algorithm-optimized fuzzy system in two scenarios. The first scenario aims to keep infected cases below a certain threshold, while the second addresses the changing healthcare capacities. Finally, we examine the proposed controller on stochasticity and disturbance in parameters, population sizes, social distance, and vaccination rate.

RESULTS

The results show the robustness and efficiency of the proposed method in the presence of up to 1% noise and 50% disturbance in tracking the desired size of the infected population. The proposed method is compared to Proportional Derivative (PD), Proportional Integral Derivative (PID), and type-1 fuzzy controllers. In the first scenario, both fuzzy controllers perform more smoothly despite PD and PID controllers reaching a lower mean squared error (MSE). Meanwhile, the proposed controller outperforms PD, PID, and the type-1 fuzzy controller for the MSE and decision policies for the second scenario.

CONCLUSIONS

The proposed approach explains how we should decide on social distancing and vaccination rate policies during pandemics against the prevalent uncertainties in disease detection and reporting.

Optimization using the firefly algorithm of ensemble neural networks with type-2 fuzzy integration for COVID-19 time series prediction

In this paper, the latest global COVID-19 pandemic prediction is addressed. Each country worldwide has faced this pandemic differently, reflected in its statistical number of confirmed and death cases. Predicting the number of confirmed and death cases could allow us to know the future number of cases and provide each country with the necessary information to make decisions based on the predictions. Recent works are focused only on confirmed COVID-19 cases or a specific country. In this work, the firefly algorithm designs an ensemble neural network architecture for each one of 26 countries. In this work, we propose the firefly algorithm for ensemble neural network optimization applied to COVID-19 time series prediction with type-2 fuzzy logic in a weighted average integration method. The proposed method finds the number of artificial neural networks needed to form an ensemble neural network and their architecture using a type-2 fuzzy inference system to combine the responses of individual artificial neural networks to perform a final prediction. The advantages of the type-2 fuzzy weighted average integration (FWA) method over the conventional average method and type-1 fuzzy weighted average integration are shown.

A novel deep interval type-2 fuzzy LSTM (DIT2FLSTM) model applied to COVID-19 pandemic time-series prediction

Currently, the novel COVID-19 coronavirus has been widely spread as a global pandemic. The COVID-19 pandemic has a major influence on human life, healthcare systems, and the economy. There are a large number of methods available for predicting the incidence of the virus. A complex and non-stationary problem such as the COVID-19 pandemic is characterized by high levels of uncertainty in its behavior during the pandemic time. The fuzzy logic, especially Type-2 Fuzzy Logic, is a robust and capable model to cope with high-order uncertainties associated with non-stationary time-dependent features. The main objective of the current study is to present a novel Deep Interval Type-2 Fuzzy LSTM (DIT2FLSTM) model for prediction of the COVID-19 incidence, including new cases, recovery cases, and mortality rate in both short and long time series. The proposed model was evaluated on real datasets produced by the world health organization (WHO) on top highly risked countries, including the USA, Brazil, Russia, India, Peru, Spain, Italy, Iran, Germany, and the U.K. The results confirm the superiority of the DIT2FLSTM model with an average area under the ROC curve (AUC) of 96% and a 95% confidence interval of [92–97] % in the short-term and long-term. The DIT2FLSTM was applied to a well-known standard benchmark, the Mackey-Glass time-series, to show the robustness and proficiency of the proposed model in uncertain and chaotic time series problems. The results were evaluated using a 10-fold cross-validation technique and statistically validated through the t-test method. The proposed DIT2FLSTM model is promising for the prediction of complex problems such as the COVID-19 pandemic and making strategic prevention decisions to save more lives.

A novel approach for the analysis of time-course gene expression data based on computing with words

In this paper, a novel approach is proposed for the analysis of time-course gene expression data based on the path-breaking work of Zadeh, Computing with Words. This method can automatically discover the patterns of temporal gene expression profile in terms of two distinguishing descriptions: linguistic description that is understandable and interpretable for human inference; and type-2 fuzzy description that is suitable for robust machine inference in the presence of uncertainty. In contrast to conventional static data mining methods which focus on the steady-state gene expression levels, the proposed scheme is a new time-series pattern mining technique for dynamical modeling of gene expression. To evaluate the performance of this paradigm, it is applied to a case study dataset from Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) which includes the temporal transcriptional profile of human colon cancer cells. The goal is to investigate the pharmacodynamics of two anticancer drugs. The transient and steady-state analysis of the transcriptional response clearly demonstrates the ability of the proposed approach to reveal the pharmacodynamical effects of drug type and dosage on the expression of genes.

A review on type-2 fuzzy neural networks for system identification

In many engineering problems, the systems dynamics are uncertain, and then, the accurate dynamic modeling is required. Type-2 fuzzy neural networks (T2F-NNs) are extensively used in system identification problems, because of their strong estimation capability. In this paper, the application of T2F-NNs is reviewed and classified. First, an introduction to the principles of system identification, including how to extract data from a system, persistency of excitation, preprocessing of information and data, removal of outlier data, and sorting of data to learn the T2F-NNs, is presented. Then, various learning methods for structure and parameters of the T2F-NNs are reviewed and analyzed. A number of different T2F-NNs that have been used to system identification are reviewed, and their disadvantages and advantages are described. Also, their efficiency in different applications is reviewed. Finally, we will look at the horizon ahead in this issue and analyze its challenges.

Active fault tolerant control based on interval type-2 fuzzy sliding mode controller and non linear adaptive observer for 3-DOF laboratory helicopter

In this paper, a robust controller for a three degree of freedom (3 DOF) helicopter control is proposed in presence of actuator and sensor faults. For this purpose, Interval type-2 fuzzy logic control approach (IT2FLC) and sliding mode control (SMC) technique are used to design a controller, named active fault tolerant interval type-2 Fuzzy Sliding mode controller (AFTIT2FSMC) based on non-linear adaptive observer to estimate and detect the system faults for each subsystem of the 3-DOF helicopter. The proposed control scheme allows avoiding difficult modeling, attenuating the chattering effect of the SMC, reducing the rules number of the fuzzy controller. Exponential stability of the closed loop is guaranteed by using the Lyapunov method. The simulation results show that the AFTIT2FSMC can greatly alleviate the chattering effect, providing good tracking performance, even in presence of actuator and sensor faults.

Fault tolerant control based on interval type-2 fuzzy sliding mode controller for coaxial trirotor aircraft

In this paper, a robust controller for a Six Degrees of Freedom (6 DOF) coaxial trirotor helicopter control is proposed in presence of defects in the system. A control strategy based on the coupling of the interval type-2 fuzzy logic control and sliding mode control technique are used to design a controller. The main purpose of this work is to eliminate the chattering phenomenon and guaranteeing the stability and the robustness of the system. In order to achieve this goal, interval type-2 fuzzy logic control has been used to generate the discontinuous control signal. The simulation results have shown that the proposed control strategy can greatly alleviate the chattering effect, and perform good reference tracking in presence of defects in the system.
