Great Britain's power system with a high penetration of renewable energy: Dataset supporting future scenarios

The share of variable renewable energy (VRE) is forecasted to increase in the energy sector to meet decarbonization targets and/or reduce their dependence on fossil fuels. The modeling of future power system scenarios is crucial to assess the role of different flexibility options, including low-carbon technologies. The data presented here support the research article "The role of energy storage in Great Britain's future power system: focus on hydrogen and biomass". These data include updated parameters, inputs, equations, biomass resource potential and biomass demand to balance bio-power and bio-hydrogen requirements. The Future Renewable Energy Performance into the Power System Model (FEPPS), a rule-based model that includes flexibility and stability constraints, has been used, and the hourly results of future scenarios by 2030 and 2040 are provided. Researchers, policymakers, and investors could use this paper as these data provide insights into the role of different technologies (including hydrogen and biomass) in power generation, system flexibility, decarbonization and costs.

What is China's efficient power generation portfolio under carbon neutrality target? An empirical analysis considering flexibility and system cost

Variable renewable energy (VRE) is the most promising form of primary generation under a carbon neutrality target due to its environmental benefits, incentive policy, and technological progress. However, the increasing proportion of VRE generation, such as solar and wind power, has sharply increased integration cost and reduced power grid stability. This study uses portfolio theory to investigate China's optimal power generation portfolio by 2050 considering flexibility constraint and system cost, including technical and integration costs. The results demonstrate that non-fossil-fuel power generation technologies have cost and emission reduction advantages over fossil-fuel-based technologies. VRE generation technologies must be developed in synergy with other forms of power generation when considering flexibility requirement and integration cost. A complete phase-out of fossil-fuel power generation technologies in China appears unlikely in the study period. Gas-fired and coal-fired power generation are the pillar forms of power generation to meet future flexibility needs.

Grid-wide subdaily hydrologic alteration under massive wind power penetration in Chile

Hydropeaking operations can severely degrade ecosystems. As variable renewable sources (e.g. wind power) are integrated into a power grid, fluctuations in the generation-demand balance are expected to increase. In this context, compensating technologies, notably hydropower reservoir plants, could operate in a stronger peaking scheme. This issue calls for an integrated modeling of the entire power system, including not only hydropower reservoirs, but also all other plants. A novel methodology to study the link between the short-term variability of renewable energies and the subdaily hydrologic alteration, due to hydropower reservoir operations is presented. Grid operations under selected wind power portfolios are simulated using a short-term hydro-thermal coordination tool. The resulting turbined flows by relevant reservoir plants are then compared in terms of the Richard-Baker flashiness index to both the baseline and the natural flow regime. Those are then analyzed in order to: i) detect if there is a significant change in the degree of subdaily hydrologic alteration (SDHA) due to a larger wind penetration, and ii) identify which rivers are most affected. The proposed scheme is applied to Chile's Central Interconnect System (SIC) for scenarios up to 15% of wind energy penetration. Results show a major degree of SDHA under the baseline as compared to the natural regime. As wind power increases, so does the SDHA in two important rivers. This suggests a need for further ecological studies in those rivers, along with an analysis of operational constraints to limit the SDHA.
