Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to compare trained and untrained Iranian traditional singers on the Dysphonia Severity Index (DSI) and the Singing Voice Handicap Index. The second objective was to examine the relationship between the DSI and Persian version of the Singing Voice Handicap Index (P-SVHI) scores in each group of trained and untrained Iranian traditional singers. STUDY DESIGN This study is a comparative cross-sectional study. METHODS This study included 17 trained male Iranian traditional singers who were compared with 17 untrained ones who were matched in terms of age. The P-SVHI was completed by trained and untrained Iranian traditional singers. Measures of jitter, lowest intensity, highest phonational frequency, and maximum phonation time (MPT) were obtained from each participant. The DSI scores were calculated using these values. RESULTS Trained male traditional singers had an average age of 33.76 ± 7.45 years, 3.24 ± 1.85 hours of daily practice, 5.24 ± 3.78 years of training, 3.06 ± 2.65 no. of professional performances, and untrained singers had an average age of 32.76 ± 12.92 years, 1.53 ± 1.17 hours of daily practice, and 0.88 ± 1.65 no. of professional performances. Trained singers had lower P-SVHI scores and sub-scores, longer MPT, higher F0 high, lower jitter, and lower I low, resulting in higher DSI values (P < 0.05). There was no significant correlation between P-SVHI scores and DSI values in each group of trained and untrained Iranian traditional singers (P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The results of this study show that the vocal abilities of professional vocalists are enhanced through voice training (higher DSI scores in trained singers vs untrained ones). Voice training can also help to lessen the perception of a handicap related to the singing voice. Hence, it may be necessary to consider alternative norms for the DSI and P-SVHI when administering them to patients who have undergone guided vocal training, such as voice/singing lessons. The current research indicates that the perception of singing voice handicap and DSI values are two distinct characteristics that do not have a significant correlation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Despite evidence for the validity of using client-led outcome measures in gender-affirming voice training (GAVT), the existing body of research on voice feminization relies heavily on acoustic-perceptual measures without additional qualitative exploration of client experience. Additionally, the authors are not aware of any existing studies prompting client input on the voice feminization methods they find most helpful in achieving their voice goals. The current study focuses on crucial client perceptions of GAVT for voice feminization and identifies the methods clients find most helpful. METHODS Using a mixed-methods approach, we gathered numeric and qualitative survey data from 21 individuals who engaged in GAVT supporting voice feminization. We conducted follow-up interviews with five survey participants to gather additional qualitative data on client experiences and perceptions of GAVT. RESULTS Quantitative and qualitative data reveal that clients are satisfied with GAVT supporting voice feminization, perceive their clinicians as being culturally inclusive, and identify oral/forward resonance work as one of the most helpful voice training methods. Interestingly, however, frequency of work on oral/forward resonance during training did not predict voice satisfaction post-training. CONCLUSIONS Clients identified oral/forward resonance as one of the most helpful methods of voice feminization and found their GAVT experiences to be supportive of their voice goals. These findings emphasize the importance and value of client-led outcome measures when investigating effective approaches to GAVT.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To map the phonatory tasks and the result measures used to evaluate vocal fatigue in vocally healthy individuals. METHODS This is a scoping review based on the following research question: What are the phonatory tasks and outcome measures used for the evaluation of vocal fatigue in vocally healthy individuals? The construction of the search strategy followed the PCC strategy; population: vocally healthy adult individuals; concept: phonatory tasks and vocal evaluation measures; and context: vocal fatigue. The search was performed electronically in the databases Medline (PubMed), LILACS (BVS), SCOPUS (Elsevier), Web of Science (Clarivate), EMBASE, and COCHRANE. A manual search in the references of the selected articles and in the journal with the highest number of publications was also performed. The selection of articles was based on reading the titles, abstracts, and full text, applying the eligibility criteria. The selected articles were related to the evaluation of vocal fatigue in healthy individuals from a predetermined vocal load task. Data regarding the characteristics of the publication, sample, phonatory tasks, and outcomes were extracted. The results were presented in a descriptive format, due to a frequency distribution analysis. RESULTS In total, 3756 studies were identified during the search, of which 60 were selected. The most used vocal load activity was the reading task, with duration ranging from 46 to 120 minutes. The (1) sustained vowel /a/ and (2) the reading of texts and phrases, both in usual intensity and frequency without the interference of the researcher, were the most used evaluation tasks. The most used outcome measures are the following: (1) acoustic parameters-fundamental frequency [fo] (mean, variance), sound pressure level (mean), local jitter (%), local shimmer (%), cepstral peak prominence (mean); (2) vocal self-assessment by the validated instruments-Perceived Phonatory Effort Scale, Visual Analog Scale, Borg-CR-10 Scale. CONCLUSIONS There is a diversity of phonatory tasks and outcome measures recurrently used in scientific articles to evaluate the signs of vocal fatigue in vocally healthy individuals. The most used vocal sample to evaluate vocal fatigue was the sustained vowel /a/ in habitual intensity and frequency without the interference of the researcher. The most frequently reported outcome measures for the assessment of immediate vocal fatigue effects were the acoustic analysis and vocal self-assessment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE There are very diverse approaches for voice therapy, and the application of voice quality used in vocal arts in voice therapy can also be seen. However, there is little research on the application of opera voice quality in voice therapy. This study explored the applications of our Opera Voice Quality Exercise in the field of voice therapy and investigated the impacts of this exercise on pitch, intensity, voice quality, and vocal ability. METHODS Sixty-two healthy subjects, defined as those with no discomfort in their voice and no appearance of organic lesions on the larynx via stroboscopic laryngoscopy were included in the study. The subjects were randomly divided into an experimental group of 31 subjects and a control group of 31 subjects. The experimental group received a voice health education and weekly coaching sessions of Opera Voice Quality Exercise, whereas the subjects in the control group only had the former. The acoustic and aerodynamic parameters were evaluated before and after the experimental interventions. RESULTS When producing [a] at comfortable speech pitch and intensity, the experimental group compared to the control group showed statistically significant improvement (P < 0.05) in the irregularity component (IC) parameter for males. When producing [a] at loudest intensity at a higher pitch in the normal speech pitch range, the experimental group compared to the control group showed statistically significant increase (P < 0.01) in sound pressure level (SPL) as well as improvements (P < 0.05) in shimmer and IC parameters for males. There was a statistically significant increase (P < 0.05) in SPL for females. During continuous speech, the experimental group compared to the control group showed statistically significant increase (P < 0.01) in SPLmax (maximum sound pressure level) for both males and females. There was a statistically significant increase in highest pitch (P < 0.01) and lowest pitch (P < 0.05) for males. CONCLUSION Regardless of gender, there is the greatest impact of Opera Voice Quality Exercise on phonation intensity. Furthermore, for males, this exercise causes the voice quality to be improved and the speech pitch to raise. Therefore, there may be applications of Opera Voice Quality Exercise in voice problems with weak voice such as nonorganic hypofunctional dysphonia, vocal fold paresis and paralysis, and voice problems related to Parkinson and age.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Diversifying voice therapy strategies is critical to get children and adolescents to adhere to the therapeutic process. PURPOSE To investigate the face-to-face and distance playful strategies have been used for vocal health education and voice therapy in children and adolescents. METHODS An integrative literature review was carried out based on the recommendations of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyzes (PRISMA). A search for full texts was conducted on the Virtual Health Library, Scientific Electronic Library Online (SCIELO) and PuBMed databases using the following descriptors, and their corresponding Medical Subject Headings (MeSH): voice (voz); voice quality (qualidade da voz); dysphonia (disfonia); voice disorders (distúrbios da fala); voice training (treinamento da voz); telemedicine (telemedicina); therapeutics (terapêutica); health promotion (promoção da saúde); group practice (prática de grupo); recreation therapy (terapia recreacional); child (criança); preschool (pré-escolar) and adolescent (adolescente). RESULTS After full reading of the studies, 15 articles were included and categorized into the following topics: face-to-face and distance playful strategies for voice therapy in children; playful strategies with gamification for education and for voice therapy in children; and vocal health educational actions in children. CONCLUSION The study found a higher number of studies that carried out educational actions and playful strategies, while fewer studies were related to the production of materials, gamification and online services for voice therapy in children. Given the proven benefits of this strategy for children, further studies focusing on the development and application of playful strategies, such as the use of gamification, should be conducted in order to stimulate the skills and adherence of this population to therapy.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Determine if acoustic measurements exist that are predictive of Auditory-Perceptual Assessment (APA) of gender expression in the voice of transgender, nonbinary, and cisgender Brazilian speakers by transgender, nonbinary, and cisgender judges, as well as speech-language pathologists in the area of voice studies. METHODS Cross-sectional study. Clips of speech (automatic speech and expressive reading of poetry) and sustained vowel emission of people of different genders were recorded and underwent APA for gender expression in the voice using a visual analog scale across 100 points, ranging from very masculine to very feminine. Sixteen acoustic measurements were extracted (noise, perturbation, spectral, and cepstral measurements). A descriptive and inferential analysis was performed using interclass coefficients of correlation and stepwise multiple linear regression, considering P < 0.05 for statistical significance. RESULTS Forty-seven people of different genders had their voices recorded. The perceived gender of these voices was judged by 236 people (65 speech-language pathologists, 101 cisgender people, and 70 transgender and nonbinary people). The perceptions and measurements that were predictive of gender perception in the voice differed according to the task (vowel or speech) and the group of judges. The predictive acoustic measurements that were common in all groups were: speech-median F0, harmonic-to-noise ratio (HNR), F0 standard deviation (F0sd), average width between F0 peaks, and spectral emphasis (Emph); vowels-median F0, HNR, F0sd, and average width between F0 peaks. Divergent measurements between groups were: speech-coefficient of variation of intensity, speech rate (Sr), minimum and maximum F0, jitter, and shimmer; vowels-coefficient of variation of intensity, Emph, Sr, and minimum and maximum F0. CONCLUSION There are acoustic measures that may predict APA; however, each group of judges considers different measures to evaluate gender, revealing an important influence of context on the evaluator in gender assessment through the voice.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare the immediate effects of using MindVox in women without voice complaints for 1, 3, 5, and 7 minutes of reading tasks, on acoustic measurements of the vocal signal in low, medium, and strong intensity emissions; on self-rated effort vocal, and on the intensity of voice reception and production. METHODS Participants read one text using MindVox for 1, 3, 5, and 7 minutes. After each time, measures of self-rated vocal effort were collected (BORG CR10-BR Scale), as well as samples of the vowel /e/ at low (>70 dB), moderate (≥70 dB and ≤80 dB), and high intensities (>80 dB). Acoustic measurements (F0, short-term acoustic measurements, and cepstral peak prominence measurements) were also collected before and after the procedure and subsequently analyzed in the CTS 5.0 Vox-Metria Program. Voice reception and production intensities were captured during the reading task using two decibel meters. One decibel meter was installed near the ear (average intensity received by the ear (EAVG)) and the other near the lips (average intensity captured near the lips (LAVG)), and the data were submitted for analysis. RESULTS The Cepstral Peak Prominence-Smoothed increased in the first minute, the Cepstral Peak Prominence increased in the third minute, and the jitter decreased from the first minute. All these changes were observed at low intensity and were maintained at the other time points. For every 5 dB of amplification (EAVG), there was a 1 dB decrease in voice production (LAVG). CONCLUSION Using MindVox in women without voice complaints brings positive immediate effects in cepstral measures and jitter at low intensity. There is a connection between the intensity of the voice received by the ear and the intensity of voice production.

Abstract
Presentations to audiences are often seen as challenging by university students, causing physiological reactivity on cortisol levels and heart rate, for example. Many students perceive that they have difficulties expressing themselves or do not consider themselves to be good communicators. With the thought that efficient communication is able to bring well-being and more confidence, it is understood that a communication skills training could mitigate adverse effects on the body during public speaking. This study aimed to verify whether a communicational improvement training can improve physiological parameters and perception when speaking in public among university students. This was a prospective, blinded, controlled, and randomized trial. Students from colleges and universities were recruited for this study. Invitations were either in person or via social networks and/or e-mail. There were 39 university students who completed the tasks, ages between 18 and 30. There were two groups: the intervention group (IG) and control group (CG). The intervention group participated in a communicational improvement program for six weeks to work on breathing, articulation, speech rhythm, pneumophonoarticulatory coordination, expressiveness and non-verbal communication. Data of heart rate measures, salivary cortisol analysis, self-perception of public speaking, and presentation ratings were collected. The intervention group presented with lower heart rates and cortisol levels, better presentation ratings, and higher self-perception of public speaking than the control group after participating in the communication improvement training. In this study it was possible to verify the efficiency of a communicational improvement training, being able to improve cortisol levels, heart rate, and perception when speaking in public in university students. Based on the results presented, new studies are suggested: (a) measuring the individual effect of the workshops demonstrated here and (b) comparing this type of intervention with other types of treatment used in the health area (medication, psychotherapeutic, holistic, etc.).

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To map the volitional and non-volitional devices used by speech and language pathologists (SLPs) in voice training and therapy and characterize their use in research on voice interventions. METHODS This scoping review is the first part of a larger study. The electronic search was carried out by mapping the references in PubMed/Medline, LILACS/BVS, Scopus, Web of Science, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library, and the manual search was carried out in the grey literature. Two blind independent reviewers selected and extracted data; divergences were solved by consensus. The data extracted in this part of the study were the authorship and year of publication, country, study design, sample characteristics, intervention modality, ingredient, target, mechanism of action, dosage, and outcome measures. They were addressed with descriptive analysis. RESULTS Publications that use devices as ingredients are mostly from the last two decades, mainly carried out in the United States of America and Brazil, in adults of both sexes with behavioral dysphonia. Forty-two types of devices were used, many of them with similar approaches but different nomenclatures. Most devices were used voluntarily, focusing on vocal function, and aiming to increase source and filter interaction. Most studies used silicone tubes. The most reported technical specification to apply the ingredient was surface electrodes on the neck. Device dosage was time-controlled, and the most used outcomes were self-assessment and acoustic analysis. CONCLUSION Devices are currently used as ingredients in vocal interventions, with a greater focus on increasing the source and filter interaction, associated with silicone tubes (the most used devices in these studies), which have been dosed with performance time. Outcomes were measured with self-assessment instruments.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of the study was to investigate whether the vocal self-concept and potential vocal and related mental health problems of university teachers and academic advisers can be improved by participating in preventive voice training. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS University teachers and academic advisers show an increased susceptibility to occupational risk factors related to their voice and an increased prevalence of developing a voice disorder in the course of their employment. An experimental, prospective, longitudinal study was conducted to examine whether voice training (1) improves physiological vocal function, vocal performance, vocal self-concept, and mental health of university teachers and academic advisers; (2) reduces unfavorable influencing factors at the university workplace; and (3) fewer voice problems are reported from the perspective of university teachers and academic advisers. RESULTS This study showed that voice training has positive influences on the voice (function and quality), voice self-concept, and well-being of university staff. CONCLUSIONS Workplace prevention programs can help to reduce the high prevalence of voice disorders among university teachers and advisers and counteract the risk factors. They should therefore be firmly integrated into continuing education/university health management and everyday life to cope with certain work-related vocal stresses and to maintain psychological and vocal well-being throughout the university career. Gender and age-related aspects should be considered.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To analyze the determining factors for using devices in vocal interventions and characterize their use by Brazilian speech-language pathologists (SLPs). METHODS This cross-sectional observational study had a sample of 148 SLPs with clinical practice in voice. They answered an online questionnaire via Google Forms about sociodemographic data, training, work in the area, and the use of devices in vocal interventions. Data were analyzed descriptively and inferentially. RESULTS Tubes, straws, and masks were the most commonly used devices. SLPs specializing in voice are more inclined to use thermotherapy and kinesio tapings while being less inclined to use therapeutic ultrasounds and nebulizers. Voice specialists are less likely to employ electrostimulation. The choice to use photobiomodulation and auditory monitoring devices is influenced by the years of clinical experience, whereas the speech-language therapy training duration affects the use of electrostimulation. The age of the professional also plays a role in the utilization of vibratory stimulation. Vibratory stimulation, auditory monitoring devices, thermotherapy, and nebulization are more frequently utilized among individuals who rely on their voices for occupational purposes, whereas electrostimulation is less common. The use of photobiomodulation is infrequent in children; vibratory stimulation is more common in adolescents, and thermotherapy is relatively common among older individuals. Most of these devices are typically prescribed in execution time during vocal intervention. CONCLUSION The specialization, the time since graduation and in the occupation, and the target population of the service are the determining factors for the use of devices. They are used in vocal therapy and training, targeting vocal function.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Gender-affirming voice treatments, such as voice training and surgery, are highly impactful for transgender patients experiencing vocal dysphoria and may be discussed on social media platforms including Twitter and Reddit. Our goal was to characterize the content and sentiment of social media posts pertaining to gender-affirming voice interventions to better understand the needs of this patient population. STUDY DESIGN Retrospective data-mining study. METHODS A total of 18,695 Tweets from 2001 to 2021 and 23,742 r/Transvoice Reddit submissions and comments from 2009 to 2020 were extracted via publicly available application programming interfaces and analyzed using language processing and sentiment analysis techniques. One thousand eighty-six highly emotive r/Transvoice posts related to voice modification treatments were manually reviewed for further classification. RESULTS Online discussion of gender-affirming voice has increased over time and is centered on vocal feminization. Recurrent themes included use of online training resources, singing voice, and barriers to care such as cost and variable experiences with health care providers. Sentiment analysis demonstrated that posts discussing gender-affirming voice training had higher average sentiment scores than those discussing voice surgery, on both Twitter (0.252 vs 0.161; P < 0.001) and Reddit (0.349 vs 0.301; P < 0.001). Frequently appearing themes in highly negative surgery posts included mixed outcomes (9.3%), surgical complications (9.3%), and recovery time (8.5%). Common themes shared by the positive subgroup analysis included peer support, vocal quality, and importance of practice. CONCLUSIONS Gender-diverse patients share various concerns and resources relating to voice intervention in the online communities of Twitter and Reddit. The discussion has been growing over the past decade and is mostly positive, with significant social support and resource-sharing within the community. Aggregated online sentiment toward gender-affirming voice surgery is more negative than voice training, largely due to concerns about surgical outcomes and variability, risks, and recovery period.

Abstract
PURPOSE The ideal performance time of straw phonation exercise, one of the semi-occluded vocal tract exercise types, in which optimal effects are seen in healthy voices is still unknown. The aim of this study was to investigate the immediate effect of straw phonation exercise in healthy adults after 1, 3, 5, 7, and 10 minutes, considering: acoustic parameters, electroglottographic parameters, auditory-perceptual general voice quality, the participants' self-assessment regarding vocal effort, and laryngeal discomfort during exercise. METHODS This study included 69 participants (35 women, 34 men) with a healthy voice. Participants performed the exercise with straw for a total of 10 minutes. The data were collected before (m0) and immediately after exercises at the first (m1), third (m3), fifth (m5), seventh (m7), and tenth (m10) minutes of performance using sustained emission of vowel /a/ and a sentence. RESULTS There was an increase in the fundamental frequency at m7 and a decrease in the shimmer from m5 in men. The sound pressure level increased at m5 and m10 in women and from m1 in men. The Acoustic Voice Quality Index score decreased at m5 in men. The mean average closed quotient decreased at m10 in women. Auditory-perceptual general voice quality was optimal at m3 in women and at m5 in men, it deteriorated at m7 in women and at m10 in men. The vocal effort during the exercise increased at m7 in women and at m10 in men. The laryngeal discomfort during the exercise increased for both sexes at m10. CONCLUSIONS The straw phonation exercise in healthy individuals promoted optimal effects on voice quality after 5 and 7 minutes for men and 3 and 5 minutes for women. Prolongation of the exercise time causes negative effects on voice quality and an increase in vocal effort and laryngeal discomfort presented by the participants.

Abstract
Coaching is one of the most common words in our modern vocabulary and has many meanings depending on the setting in which it is used. Coaching facilitates positive changes to achieve a goal, usually through indirect approaches, including improving an individual's outlook on their behaviors or attitudes. Its application has spread beyond the corporate world, and many medical specialties use coaching principles. The goals of this article are to introduce coaching as a profession, and to explore the function of a vocal coach to improve communicative and vocal performance. Moreover, differences between voice therapy and voice training are highlighted, including the principles subjacent to these interventions and the use of coaching strategies. Four strategies of professional coach practitioners adapted to the training and therapy of the voice with applications to both are described. These are: powerful questions, active listening, changing habits, and implementation intention. The use of these strategies may help individuals to achieve high voice performance. Most importantly, the speech-language pathologist voice specialist can apply these strategies particularly in cases of behavioral dysphonias, which can be resistant to traditional voice therapy.

Abstract
Intensive schedules in behavioral voice therapy and training have been proposed to have a range of positive benefits including enhanced outcomes, high client and clinician satisfaction, and reduced client attrition. In the sub-field of behavioral voice training for trans and gender diverse clients, intensive schedules may also present a means of increasing service access opportunities for a vulnerable population. Despite the proposed benefits there has been limited research investigating client experiences in intensive voice training programs. The current study utilized a mixed-methodological approach to compare participant experiences in an intensively scheduled (three 45-minute sessions per week, over 4 weeks) versus a traditionally scheduled (one 45-minute session per week, over 12 weeks) voice training program for trans and gender diverse participants aiming to develop a perceptually feminine-sounding voice. Participant experiences were compared using a satisfaction questionnaire delivered to both training groups as well as thematic analysis of semi-structured interviews conducted with participants in the intensive group. Results suggested that individuals in the intensive training program had both positive and negative experiences related to the intensive schedule, but all viewed the program favorably and expressed a preference for intensive training based on their experiences. However, it was also found that overall satisfaction and attrition did not differ significantly between the intensive and traditional training groups and that many factors contributing to participant satisfaction in the intensive program were unrelated to the intensive schedule. Results from the current study also suggest that experiences in intensive programs may be highly variable and mediated by factors such as clients' individual personalities and preferences. The current study concludes that intensive schedules present a viable alternative to traditional schedules in practice, with additional considerations and directions for future research also discussed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Extensive research has demonstrated that straw/tube phonation exercises produce positive effects on the voice quality of the user. The purpose of this study was to explore pedagogical practices employed by a range of voice professionals when using SOVTEs by applying human-centered design approaches to examine workflow and communication between teachers and students. METHOD/DESIGN The researchers conducted a series of five participatory role-playing workshop activities at a multi-disciplinary vocology conference that included speech-language pathologists, voice scientists, physicians, singing teachers, acting voice teachers, choral directors, and singers. Volunteers were asked to assume the role of teaching or learning straw phonation exercises. The other participants from each workshop were asked to provide written and verbal feedback regarding the teacher/student dynamics and what they found most important and relevant in terms of best practices for SOVTEs. Expert evaluators subsequently provided similar feedback based on video recordings of the workshops. RESULTS While there was variability noted in teaching techniques and results, common themes emerged in the analysis. Successful and unsuccessful student and teacher techniques were identified by the workshop participants. Through the video analysis, the research team identified themes in instructional teaching, experiential learning, and straw articulation and mechanics. CONCLUSIONS The benefits of straw/tube phonation exercises on voice quality have been well-established and are clear. As we continue to refine best practices in SOVTEs and, in particular, straw phonation, involvement of experts in HCD as part of multidisciplinary teams may lead to the eventual design of SOVTE tools that provide greater precision, consistency, and effectiveness both in clinical and pedagogical settings, and aid in the differentiation of SOVTE approaches within the taxonomy of vocal habilitation and rehabilitation techniques.

Abstract
PURPOSE The present study aimed at assessing the effectiveness of remote voice therapy (telepractice) implemented with Acapella Choice device in subjects with vocal fatigue. METHODS Thirty participants with vocal fatigue were randomly assigned to one of two treatment groups: (1) voice treatment with acapella Choice device plus vocal hygiene program (n=15), and (2) voice treatment with Water resistance therapy plus vocal hygiene program (n=15). Laryngoscopic assessment was conducted in all subjects to confirm diagnosis. Before and after voice therapy, participants underwent self-assessment of voice. Vocal Fatigue Index (VFI), Voice Handicap Index (VHI), and Vocal tract discomfort scale (VTDS) were used. Treatment period included six voice therapy sessions within 3 weeks, with a frequency of two therapy sessions per week. Each session lasted 30 minutes. For both groups, exercises consisted of a sequence of nine phonatory tasks performed with Acapella Choice (experimental group) and WRT (control group). Comparison for all variables were performed between experimental group and control group. RESULTS Significant improvements were found when comparing Pre and Post measures for both groups. No significant differences were found when comparing Acapella Choice group and WRT group. CONCLUSION Remote physiologic voice therapy with Acapella Choice device and water resistance therapy seem to be both effective to improve voice in subjects diagnosed with vocal fatigue. No differences should be expected between these therapeutic protocols when treating patients with vocal fatigue. Moreover, both are effective at reducing tiredness of voice, voice avoidance, physical discomfort associated with voicing, subjective perception of sensory discomfort in throat, and reduction of physical, emotional, and functional impact of voice problems.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The vast majority of motor learning studies investigating focus of attention have found that an external focus of attention (focusing on the effect of a movement) results in enhanced performance and learning, compared to an internal focus of attention (focusing on the body movement itself). The present study attempts to determine if the high incidence of internal focus of attention instruction that has been reported in the realm of athletics is replicated in voice training. METHODS Two hundred and seventy-eight singers, who were at least 18 years old and taking voice lessons, were recruited to participate in an anonymous research survey entitled "Instructions given to singers in voice lessons." The main six questions asked singers to report phrases or instructions that their studio voice teachers gave them in regard to posture, breathing and/or support, tone clarity and/or onset of tone, space and/or resonance, articulation, and reducing tension. RESULTS Approximately 50.83% of the total responses were classified as inducing an external focus, 39.42% were classified as internal focus, 6.48% used a combination of both internal and external focus, and 3.27% were categorized as miscellaneous. CONCLUSIONS The results of this study indicate that voice teachers use both external and internal attentional focus directives in the voice studio. Given the robust body of literature supporting the use of external focus, it is noteworthy that the current study found that external focus is used more often than internal focus in voice training.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To verify the immediate effects of voiced gargling on the electrical activity of extrinsic laryngeal muscles and vocal self-assessment. METHODS A sample of 20 individuals of both sexes, mean age of 31.95 (±11.57) years, were equally divided in two groups according to the presence or absence of vocal complaint. Both groups were evaluated by surface electromyography of the suprahyoid (SH) and infrahyoid (IH) muscle areas during rest, phonation of the sustained vowel [Ɛ] in habitual and strong intensities; phonation of rising and falling glissando; and counting from 1 to 10. Surface electromyography was assessed before and after the voiced gargling exercise, which lasted 1 minute. All participants self-rated their voice and phonatory comfort after the exercise. Wilcoxon and Mann-Whitney tests were applied, as well as Fisher's exact test and linear-to-linear test. The level of significance was 5%. RESULTS The percentage of electrical activity of the SH muscle area decreased in the glissando and counting tasks in the group with vocal complaint, as well as in phonation of sustained vowel in strong intensity in the group without complaint. Decrease was also observed in the right IH muscle area at rest and during sustained vowel phonation at habitual and strong intensities. Percentage of muscular electrical activity was lower in the group with complaint in the following situations: IH muscle area on both sides, at rest and during habitual phonation of sustained vowel and glissando before and after the exercise; right IH muscle area, during counting and strong phonation of sustained vowel before and after exercise; left IH muscle area, in the counting task, just after intervention. Most participants noticed improvement in voice (70%) and phonatory comfort (65%). CONCLUSIONS Voiced gargling during 1 minute promotes immediate effects on the electrical activity of the extrinsic laryngeal muscles in individuals with or without vocal complaint. Most individuals reported improved voice and phonatory comfort after exercise.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Gender affirming voice training is a service provided by speech language pathologists to members of the trans and gender diverse community. While there is some evidence to support the effectiveness of this training, the evidence base is limited by a lack of prospective studies with large sample sizes. Finally, there has been only limited research investigating the effectiveness of this training when delivered on intensive (compressed) schedules, even though such schedules are used in clinical practice and may have practical benefits such as increasing service access for this vulnerable population. METHODOLOGY This study aimed to investigate and compare the effectiveness gender affirming voice training among 34 trans individuals presumed male at birth who shared a goal of developing a 'female-sounding voice'. Among these 34 participants, 17 received their training on a traditional schedule (one 45-minute session per week over 12 weeks) and 17 on an intensive scheduled (three 45-minute sessions per week over 4 weeks). Building on a previous mixed methodological study which indicated that these two training groups were equally satisfied with training outcomes, the current study utilised a wide range of self-report, acoustic, and auditory-perceptual outcome measures (including self-ratings and listener-ratings of voice) to investigate training effectiveness. DISCUSSION Results from this study indicated that both training programs were similarly effective, producing positive statistically significant change among participants on a range of outcome measures. Participants in both groups demonstrated significant auditory-perceptual and acoustic voice change and reported increased satisfaction with voice, increased congruence between gender identity and expression, and a reduction in the negative impact of voice concerns on everyday life. However, as has been the case in past studies, training was not sufficient for all participants to achieve their specific goal of developing a consistently 'female-sounding voice'. CONCLUSION This study provides evidence to suggest that gender affirming voice training for transfeminine clients may be similalrly effective whether delivered intensively or traditionally. This study provides evidence to support the practice of using a wide range of outcome measures to gain holistic insight into client progress in gender affirming voice training programs.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Digital videokymography based on high-speed videoendoscopy enables the evaluation of therapeutic techniques and voice training, such as the LaxVox technique, on vocal fold vibrations. This study investigated the immediate effects of the LaxVox technique on digital videokymographic parameters obtained through high-speed videolaryngoscopy in adults with voice complaints. STUDY DESIGN An experimental intrasubject comparative study of adults with voice complaints was conducted. METHODS Image processing software was used to analyze the videos and obtain digital videokymography parameters. The intraclass correlation coefficient was used to determine the intra-rater reliability of the analyzed parameters. The paired t test and Wilcoxon signed-rank test were used to compare digital videokymography parameters before and after the LaxVox technique, in sex-specific analyses. The significance level was set at 5%. RESULTS In total, 25 laryngeal images from 15 women and 10 men were analyzed. On digital videokymography analysis, the mean vocal fold opening in the posterior glottal region was decreased immediately after using the LaxVox technique in women. In contrast, no significant changes were found in other parameters compared to pre LaxVox technique values in both men and women with voice complaints. CONCLUSION Digital videokymography analysis revealed that the LaxVox technique reduces the mean vocal fold opening in the posterior glottal region of women with voice complaints.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/PURPOSE Voice therapy is frequently recommended as the first-line treatment for benign voice disorders. This study investigated the clinical effectiveness of voice therapy and the prognostic factors of treatment outcomes. METHODS We recruited 103 consecutive patients with voice disorders, namely vocal nodules, polyps, and muscle tension dysphonia (MTD), from September 2014 to July 2016. All the patients received voice therapy as the primary treatment. Treatment outcomes were evaluated using auditory perceptual evaluation, acoustic analysis, maximum phonation time, and 10-item voice handicap index (VHI-10). Clinical effectiveness of voice therapy was defined by either 1) a posttreatment VHI-10 score ≤ 10 points or 2) decline of VHI-10 ≥ 4 points. RESULTS After voice therapy, VHI-10 and perceptual rating of voice quality improved significantly (p < 0.05) in the three disease categories. In patients with nodules, all the outcome parameters improved significantly (p < 0.05). Patients with good adherence to voice therapy (attending more than four sessions) had a significantly higher effectiveness than those with poor adherence (87% vs. 64%, p < 0.05). Patients with high occupational vocal demand also demonstrated a better effectiveness than those with routine vocal demand (90% vs. 70%, p < 0.05). Subsequent multivariate analyses revealed that adherence and vocal demand were independently and significantly correlated with clinical effectiveness (p = 0.03). CONCLUSION Voice therapy is effective for patients with vocal nodules, polyps, and MTD. Adherence to voice therapy and occupational vocal demand are significant prognostic factors for treatment outcomes.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Many vocal enhancement and rehabilitation programs for voice professionals define vocal exercises without analyzing their effects on that specific population in which they will be applied, in the established dose and often without considering the presence and absence of vocal alteration. Journalists have sought the voice clinic due to new professional vocal demands and a vocal program is being elaborated. OBJECTIVE To determine the immediate effect of humming in professionals with and without voice disorders who work under high vocal demand in a journalistic context. METHOD Thirty-six individuals who completed the Dysphonia Risk Screening Protocol and underwent voice recording participated in the study. Three speech therapists defined the presence and/or absence of vocal changes by consensus. Subsequently, five repetitions of humming were proposed; the exercises lasted five seconds each and were separated by five seconds of complete silence, and recordings were made before and after the exercise (vowel and phrase). For the pre and post comparison between the groups with and without vocal changes, acoustic measurements and spectrogram, including the classification of the signal type, were performed. RESULTS The sample had a similar distribution of men and women and a mean age of 39.9 years. Most of the professionals were journalists or reporters. The risk of dysphonia was high for half of the sample, and the presence of vocal changes, predominantly mild ones, was identified in 56%. After the exercise, a decrease in noise at low frequencies and an improvement in the series of harmonics and the signal type were observed in both groups; a decrease in irregularity was observed only in the participants without vocal changes. CONCLUSION The proposed humming exercise had an immediate positive effect on the voice of professionals working in a journalistic context, and the changes were particularly evident in aspects of the voice that were initially altered.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Acoustic parameters of voice were studied in music majors throughout 18 months of training to understand the influence of voice training on voice. METHODS Twenty-three students from Xiamen Music School between 12 and 15 years old were enrolled. Acoustic examination was performed three times- every 6 months for 18 months. Various traditional acoustic parameters were measured, including dysphonia severity index (DSI), jitter, and D-value of vocal range. Nonlinear dynamic measures were also measured, including diffusive chaos to construct voice type component profiles (VTCPs), spectrum convergence ratio, and nonlinear energy difference ratio. The results were analyzed by multivariate analysis of variance. RESULTS Over the study duration, there was an improvement of DSI (P = 0.002), and D-value of vocal range (P = 0.000). Among nonlinear parameters, only voice type component data demonstrated significant changes during the study duration. Both Voice Type Component 1(VTC1) and VTC3 values differed from Time 1 to Time 2 as well as from Time 1 to Time 3. The proportion of VTC1 in samples generally decreased, while VTC3, representative of aperiodicity, increased. Both nonlinear energy difference ratio and spectrum convergence ratio exhibited no significant changes throughout the study. CONCLUSION Professional voice training can improve DSI and D-value of vocal range in singers' voices. These parameters have potential to be used for voice training evaluation and screening. Many nonlinear parameters did not detect differences in the healthy voices studied, but VTCPs created using intrinsic dimension present a valuable new method, visualizing increases in aperiodicity of the speaking voices after professional voice training.

Abstract
Background Voice training induced spontaneous pneumothorax is seldom reported in the literature. This study reports a case of middle-aged man without comorbidities who presented with spontaneous pneumothorax following voice training and made a complete recovery after CT guided needle thoracostomy. Case report This is a case of a middle-aged male non-smoker with ectomorphic build who presented with chest pain of sudden onset and difficulty in breathing following voice training. The chest pain was central, radiated to the left shoulder and aggravated by lying supine. Chest auscultation revealed reduced breath sounds on the left middle and lower lung zones posteriorly.An initial diagnosis of chest pain of unknown origin was made. Chest radiograph done revealed a left sided pneumothorax, with no background lung pathology seen. Chest CT was done to rule out any underlying pathology, to quantify the pneumothorax and to plan for CT guided needle thoracostomy at our institution.Complete resolution of the left sided pneumothorax was seen after the procedure. Conclusion Voice training is a rare cause of primary spontaneous pneumothorax. In the absence of any other lung pathology, it can be effectively managed by CT guided needle thoracostomy as seen in the index patient.It is essential for emergency physicians to include voice training as a potential cause for primary spontaneous pneumothorax.

Abstract
PURPOSE The present study aimed at observing the effect of tube diameter and vocal tract configuration on frequency, amplitude, and regularity of Poral oscillation caused by bubbling during water resistance therapy (WRT). A secondary objective was to examine the degree of self-perceived sensation of massage-like effect produced by bubbles during WRT. METHODS Forty-two participants were included in this study. Assessment protocol included: (1) self-assessment of massage-like sensation and (2) objective assessment of air pressure-related variables. In the first section, participants were instructed to select and produce a sustained-vowel like phonation into three different tubes (varying inner diameter) submerged 5 cm below the water surface. Also, two different vocal tract configurations were produced by all subjects: (1) horizontal position (regular vocal tract position), (2) vertical position (yawning position with low vertical laryngeal position). Participants were asked to self-assess their massage-like sensation. In the second section, objective measurements of air pressure-related variables were acquired during WRT exercises. RESULTS Statistical differences were driven by tube inner diameter for oral pressure oscillation frequency, amplitude, jitter and shimmer and self-perceived massage-like sensation. Vocal tract position generated differences for medium-size tube and large-size tube only for self-perceived massage-like sensation. CONCLUSION Inner diameter of tube and configuration of vocal tract affect bubble characteristics and massage-like sensation during WRT. Larger tube diameters and vocal tract volumes seem to produce more regular bubbles, lower bubble frequency, and larger bubble amplitude, causing a more evident massage-like sensation. Therefore, control of these variables is apparently relevant to obtain the best effect in patients with voice disorders.

PURPOSE Electrical stimulation-supported therapy is an often used modality. However, it still belongs to experimental methods in the human larynx. Data are lacking with which to evaluate the real effect in recurrent laryngeal nerve injury. The aim of this study was to investigate whether transcutaneous electrical stimulation added to voice therapy has a beneficial effect compared to voice therapy alone on vocal fold movement recovery in the case of an injured macroscopically intact recurrent laryngeal nerve. METHODS Adults with unilateral vocal fold paralysis after thyroidectomy, in which the recurrent laryngeal nerve was left macroscopically intact, were included in this case-control study performed in tertiary referral hospital between September 2006 and June 2018. Among 175 eligible participants, 158 were included. Compliance with 6 months follow-up was 94.3%. INTERVENTIONS medicament therapy and voice therapy (group 1) vs. medicament therapy and voice therapy and transcutaneous electrical stimulation (group 2). MAIN OUTCOME vocal fold movement. RESULTS A total of 149 patients were included in the analysis (group 1, 89 patients; group 2, 60 patients). The groups were homogenous. In groups 1 and 2, 64% and 60% of vocal folds, respectively, were improved after 6 months (P = 0.617). No difference was found between patients who improved and patients who did not improve. CONCLUSIONS Adding transcutaneous electrical stimulation to voice therapy provided no beneficial effect on the recovery of vocal fold movement. Therefore, its indications should be re-evaluated; it is questionable whether stimulation should be routinely recommended.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The voice is an important occupational tool for teachers. Voice training programs have been shown to help strengthen the voice health and endurance. However, longitudinal studies on voice trainings are sparse. In this study, long-term effects nearly 2 years after a voice training program have been investigated. METHODS The acoustic voice quality (Dysphonia Severity Index [DSI]), the voice self-concept (Fragebogen zur Erfassung des Stimmlichen Selbstkonzepts), and the health-related quality of life (SF-12) of 55 teachers who participated in a prior voice training program of ten 90 minutes sessions were compared to 33 teachers without voice training. The participants were measured at three times: in a pre- and a post-training survey and in a 2-years follow-up survey. RESULTS The trained teachers increased in DSI over all three surveys while the nontrained teachers decreased in DSI with a significant interaction effect. Also the trained teachers significantly increased the awareness of voice use and their mental health compared to the nontrained group. CONCLUSIONS The positive effects of the voice training, which have been found between pre- and post-training and in comparison with the control group, clearly sustained in long-term 2 years after the end of the training. This finding emphasizes the importance of voice training for teachers as a long-term investment for a voice-related healthy working life.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Recently, electrical stimulation in vocal rehabilitation has been the subject of studies. This treatment has shown promising results regarding the decrease of vocal/laryngeal symptoms, pain and the improvement of vocal tension. In addition to decreasing pain symptoms, TENS treatments may lead to muscle relaxation. There is no data on the effects of this resource as a vocal therapy in women with behavioral dysphonia. Research in this area may provide evidence to assist the clinical decision related to the treatment of women with complaints of behavioral dysphonia and musculoskeletal pain. OBJECTIVE To verify the effects of low-frequency TENS in association with vocal therapy on musculoskeletal pain in women with behavioral dysphonia. METHODS Participants included 27 women with vocal nodules randomized into two groups. The experimental group (EG) - 13 women received 12 sessions of TENS (pulse of 200 μs, frequency at 10 Hz, in motor threshold) with electrodes placed bilaterally on the trapezius muscle and submandibular area for 20 min followed by 30 min of vocal therapy, and the control group (CG) - 14 women received 12 sessions of 20 min of a placebo TENS followed by 30 min of vocal therapy. We investigated the frequency and intensity of the musculoskeletal pain in several body regions, as well as the intensity of pain at rest and in the application of pressure with an algometer applied to the descending fibers of the trapezius muscle. The pressure-pain threshold (PPT) was also investigated. All evaluations occurred before, immediately after, and at one and three months after treatment in both groups. RESULTS We observed a reduction in the frequency of pain in the larynx after treatment of both groups, but only the EG showed a decrease in pain intensity in this region. It was verified with an algometer to the trapezius muscle that the electrical stimulation associated with the vocal therapy decreased the intensity of pain during the application of pressure and increased the PPT. There were no significant differences with regard to variables investigated in the comparison between the interventions. On the other hand, there was decreased pain in the trapezius muscle for the EG in comparison to the pre- and post-intervention. CONCLUSION The vocal therapyprogram reduced the frequency and intensity of the musculoskeletal pain in the regions proximal to the larynx of women with behavioral dysphonia. In addition, TENS followed by vocal therapy increased the threshold of sensitivity to muscular pain in the trapezius, demonstrating that it is a good resource to use in conjunction with traditional vocal therapy in cases of behavioral dysphonia associated with pain and muscle tension.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS Although water resistance therapy (WRT) has been widely used in voice training, no data are supporting the effectiveness of WRT as vocal warm-up for singers. The present study aimed to determine the effects of WRT as a vocal warm-up method in contemporary commercial music (CCM) singers. METHODS Twenty-two CCM singers were randomly assigned to one of two types of 15-min vocal warm-up: open vocal tract (OVT) warm-up and WRT. Self-perceived resonant voice quality and aerodynamic, electroglottographic, and acoustic measures were assessed before, immediately after vocal warm-up, and after 40 min of vocal loading. RESULTS Significant results were found immediately after vocal warm-up. Subglottic pressure and inspiratory airflow duration decreased in both groups. SPL decreased for the OVT group. No changes in SPL were found for the WRT group. Significant results were observed after vocal loading. Subglottic pressure and inspiratory airflow duration decreased for both groups after vocal loading. Expiratory airflow duration and electroglottographic contact quotient decreased for the OVT group. CONCLUSION Some objective data suggest that the WRT method is more effective as vocal warm-up than OVT exercises. Since outcomes in self-perceived resonant voice quality for both methods were similar but physiological effects were different, vocal warm-up strategies might produce a placebo effect.

Abstract
PURPOSE The present study was designed to assess the immediate effects of the semi-occluded ventilation mask (SOVM) in subjects with functional dysphonia and subjects with normal voice. METHODS Sixty-four participants were included in this study (48 women and 16 men). Thirty-one of them were diagnosed with functional dysphonia and 33 with normal voice. All subjects were randomly assigned to one of two conditions: an experimental condition using the SOVM (n = 33) and a control condition with participants not using the SOVM (n = 31). Thus, within both conditions, participants could be either dysphonic or normal-voiced. This produced a total of four different groups: (1) subjects with normal voice with SOVM (n = 17), (2) subjects with normal voice without SOVM (n = 16), (3) dysphonic subjects with SOVM (n = 16), and (4) dysphonic subjects without SOVM (n = 15). All participants underwent aerodynamic, electroglottographic (EGG), and acoustic assessments, and were also asked to assess their own voice, before and after voice exercises. RESULTS Significant differences were found for aerodynamic, EGG, and acoustic variables when comparing SOVM conditions (dysphonic and normal) against control. Cepstral peak prominence and EGG contact quotient showed an increase among dysphonic participants with SOVM. L1-L0 showed an increase for all participants in SOVM condition (dysphonic and normal). Self-perceived resonant voice quality showed an increase for both groups in SOVM condition. Glottal airflow showed a decrease for the dysphonic participants in SOVM condition. Phonation threshold pressure and subglottic pressure showed a decrease for both groups in SOVM condition. CONCLUSION The present study suggests that immediate positive effect could be produced by connected speech phonatory tasks using the SOVM in both dysphonic subjects and subjects with normal voice, the change being greater among the former. SOVM seems to promote an easy voice production and a more efficient phonation.

Abstract
Introduction Vocal fold polyp is a benign proliferative disease in the superficial lamina propria of the vocal fold, and vocal microsurgery can improve the voice quality of patients with vocal fold polyp. In preliminary studies, we found that vocal training could improve the vocal quality of patients with early vocal fold polyp. Objective This study aimed to compare the efficacies of vocal training and vocal microsurgery in patients with early vocal fold polyp. Methods A total of 38 patients with early vocal fold polyp underwent 3 months of vocal training (VT group); another 31 patients with early vocal fold polyp underwent vocal microsurgery (VM group). All subjects were assessed using laryngostroboscopy, voice handicap index, and dysphonia severity index, and the efficacies of vocal training and vocal microsurgery were compared. Results The cure rates of vocal training and vocal microsurgery were 31.6% (12/38) and 100% (31/31), respectively. The intragroup paired-sample t-test showed that the post treatment vocal handicap index, maximum phonation time, highest frequency (F0-high), lowest intensity (I-low), and dysphonia severity index in both the VT and VM groups were better than those before treatment, except for the jitter value. The intergroup independent-sample t-test revealed that the emotional values of vocal handicap index (t = − 2.22, p = 0.03), maximum phonation time (t = 2.54, p = 0.013), jitter (t = − 2.11, p = 0.03), and dysphonia severity index (t = 3.24, p = 0.002) in the VT group were better than those in the VM group. Conclusions Both, vocal training and vocal microsurgery could improve the voice quality of patients with early vocal fold polyp, and these methods present different advantages.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Voice is produced by the vibration of the vocal folds expressed by its fundamental frequency (Hz), whereas the formants (F) are fundamental frequency multiples, indicating amplification zones of the vowels in the vocal tract. We have shown that lifetime isolated growth hormone deficiency (IGHD) causes high pitch voice, with higher values of most formant frequencies, maintaining a prepuberal acoustic prediction. The objectives of this work were to verify the effects of the therapy with a semi-occluded vocal tract (SOVTT) and choir training on voice in these subjects with IGHD. We speculated that acoustic vocal parameters can be improved by SOVTT or choir training. STUDY DESIGN This is a prospective longitudinal study without control group. METHODS Acoustic analysis of isolated vowels was performed in 17 adults with IGHD before and after SOVTT (pre-SOVTT and post-SOVTT) and after choir training (post training), in a 30-day period. RESULTS The first formant was higher in post training compared with the pre-SOVTT (P = 0.009). The second formant was higher in post-SOVTT than in pre-SOVTT (P = 0.045). There was a trend of reduction in shimmer in post-choir training in comparison with pre-SOVTT (P = 0.051), and a reduction in post-choir training in comparison with post-SOVTT (P = 0.047). CONCLUSIONS SOVTT was relevant to the second formant, whereas choir training improved first formant and shimmer. Therefore, this speech therapy approach was able to improve acoustic parameters of the voice of individuals with congenital, untreated IGHD. This seems particularly important in a scenario in which few patients are submitted to growth hormone replacement therapy.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of two isolated vocal facilitating techniques, glottal fry and yawn-sigh, on the phonation of vocally healthy female speech-language pathology (SLP) students. STUDY DESIGN A multigroup pretest-posttest design was used. METHODS A group of thirty-six healthy female SLP students with a mean age of 18.1 years were assigned into three groups: a glottal fry group (practicing the facilitating technique glottal fry across 18 weeks, n=12), a yawn-sigh group (practicing the facilitating technique yawn-sigh across 18 weeks, n=12) and a control group (receiving no facilitating techniques, n=12). To compare vocal measures before and after this training period, an identical objective voice assessment protocol (maximum performance task, acoustic analysis, voice range profile and Dysphonia Severity Index) was performed in the three groups. Groups were compared over time using linear mixed models. Within-group effects of time were determined using post hoc pairwise comparisons. RESULTS Glottal fry resulted in a significant decrease in lowest and highest intensity. Yawn-sigh resulted in a significant increase in fundamental frequency, a significant decrease in shimmer and noise-to-harmonic ratio, and a significant increase in highest intensity. CONCLUSIONS Yawn-sigh may have a positive effect on the phonation of female vocally healthy future SLPs, whereas results are less supportive for using glottal fry in training this population's voice.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of voice rehabilitation in patients treated with radiotherapy for laryngeal cancer. METHOD A total of 42 patients with laryngeal cancer who are treated with radiotherapy with curative intent participated in a randomized controlled study. The collected data were voice range profiles (VPRs) and patient-reported outcome (PRO) instruments for measurement of self-perceived communication function (Swedish Self-Evaluation for Communication Experiences after Laryngeal cancer (S-SECEL)) and health related quality of life (HRQL) (European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire Core 30/Head and Neck module). Data were collected 1 month (pre voice rehabilitation), 6 months, and 12 months postradiotherapy. Of the patients, 19 received voice rehabilitation, whereas 23 constituted a control group. RESULTS There were several statistically significant improvements in the study group concerning the HRQL and self-perceived communication function. The largest improvements occurred between occasions 1 (prevoice rehabilitation) and 2 (6-month postradiotherapy) and then remained constant. VRP area demonstrated a statistically significant difference when comparing changes over time, where the study group improved more than the control group. CONCLUSION HRQL and self-perceived communication function showed improvement in the study group and trends of impairment in the control group. This result might suggest that it would be beneficial for the patients as well as in a health economic perspecitve, to receive voice rehabilitatiom to make a faster improvement of the HRQL and self-perceived communication function.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous research suggests that classically trained professional singers rely not only on external auditory feedback but also on proprioceptive feedback associated with internal voice sensitivities. OBJECTIVES The Lombard effect and the relationship between sound pressure level (SPL) and external auditory feedback were evaluated for professional and nonprofessional singers. Additionally, the relationship between voice quality, evaluated in terms of singing power ratio (SPR), and external auditory feedback, level of accompaniment, voice register, and singer gender was analyzed. METHODS The subjects were 10 amateur or beginner singers and 10 classically trained professional or semiprofessional singers (10 men and 10 women). Subjects sang an excerpt from the Star-Spangled Banner with three different levels of the accompaniment, 70, 80, and 90 dBA and with three different levels of external auditory feedback. SPL and SPR were analyzed. RESULTS The Lombard effect was stronger for nonprofessional singers than professional singers. Higher levels of external auditory feedback were associated with a reduction in SPL. As predicted, the mean SPR was higher for professional singers than nonprofessional singers. Better voice quality was detected in the presence of higher levels of external auditory feedback. CONCLUSIONS With an increase in training, the singer's reliance on external auditory feedback decreases.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the efficacy of voice rehabilitation regarding acoustically measured voice quality as well as self-perceived function after radiotherapy for laryngeal cancer. STUDY DESIGN Prospective intervention study. METHODS Twenty male patients irradiated for laryngeal cancer participated in the study. Voice recordings and self-assessment of voice function (hoarseness, vocal fatigue, and vocal loudness) were made one and 6 months after completion of radiotherapy. The recordings were analyzed with the program Praat. Ten of the patients received 10 sessions of structured voice rehabilitations between the recordings and 10 worked as a control group. RESULTS Jitter and shimmer improved for both groups. Harmonics-to-noise-ratio and maximum phonation time improved for the patients who received voice rehabilitation while it deteriorated for the control group. The self-assessment questions about vocal fatigue and vocal loudness showed improvement for both groups while hoarseness showed no change. CONCLUSION General improvement was seen for both the study group and the control group. Despite the lack of statistical significant difference, there are trends where greater improvement in perturbation and self-assessment measures are noted in the study group. The results suggest positive effects of voice rehabilitation in both voice quality and self-perceived function.

Abstract
This paper records our experience in dealing with 432 patients where phonosurgery was done. The cadaver study of the larynx confirms the basic principles on which the techniques are based. Our experience with Type 1 thyroplasty is that it gives better results than Teflon paste injection. Use of the microscope during laryngeal surgery has given us greater precision in dealing with mucosal and submucosal pathology. The results of surgery are excellent but require to be followed up with vocal rest, hygiene and rehabilitation to prevent recurrence and get good long-term results of voice improvement.
