Detecting Microstructural Criticality/Degeneracy through Hybrid Learning Strategies Trained by Molecular Dynamics Simulations

Efficient microstructure design can strongly accelerate the development of materials. However, the complexity of the microstructure-behavior relation renders the criticalities and degeneracies within the microstructure space highly possible. Criticality means that a slight microstructural change can lead to a dramatic transition in material behavior, while degeneracy means that very different microstructures may lead to similar behaviors. To investigate these microstructural characteristics of the fiber/matrix interface within composite materials, we have proposed a hybrid deep-learning-based framework by integrating the supervised feed-forward neural network and the unsupervised autoencoder, which are trained by the molecular dynamics (MD) simulation results. The well-trained model continuously maps the elemental density images within the interfacial area into a low-dimensional latent space. Assisted by the extracted latent features, we can easily detect the criticalities and degeneracies within the original microstructure space of the composite's interface. The predicted microstructural criticalities and degeneracies are validated by investigating their atomistic origins through MD simulations. The proposed framework can be employed for the interfacial microstructure design of composite materials by identifying certain interfacial microstructures that might lead to undesirable behaviors.

Damage Evolution and Fracture Behavior of C/SiC Minicomposites with Different Interphases under Uniaxial Tensile Load

In this paper, the tensile damage and fracture behavior of carbon fiber reinforced silicon carbide (C/SiC) minicomposites with single- and multiple-layer interphases are investigated. The effect of the interphase on the tensile damage and fracture behavior of C/SiC minicomposites is analyzed. The evolution of matrix cracking under the tensile load of the C/SiC minicomposite with a notch is observed using the digital image correlation (DIC) method. The damage evolution process of the C/SiC minicomposite can be divided into four main stages, namely, (1) an elastic response coupled with partial re-opening of thermal microcracking; (2) multiple matrix microcracking perpendicular to the applied loading; (3) crack opening and related fiber/matrix, bundle/matrix, and inter-bundle debonding; and (4) progressive transfer of the load to the fibers and gradual fiber failure until composite failure/fracture. On the fracture surface, a large number of fibers pulling out of the samples with both single-layer and multi-layer interphases can be clearly observed.

Modeling Cyclic Fatigue Hysteresis Loops of 2D Woven Ceramic Matrix Composites at Elevated Temperatures in Steam

In this paper, the cyclic fatigue hysteresis loops of 2D woven SiC/SiC ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) at elevated temperatures in steam have been investigated. The interface slip between fibers and the matrix existing in matrix cracking modes 3 and 5, in which matrix cracking and interface debonding occurred in longitudinal yarns, is considered as the major reason for hysteresis loops of 2D woven CMCs. The hysteresis loops of 2D SiC/SiC composites corresponding to different peak stresses, test conditions, and loading frequencies have been predicted using the present analysis. The damage parameter, i.e., the proportion of matrix cracking mode 3 in the entire matrix cracking modes of the composite, and the hysteresis dissipated energy increase with increasing fatigue peak stress. With increasing cycle number, the interface shear stress in the longitudinal yarns decreases, leading to transition of interface slip types of matrix cracking modes 3 and 5.

TiB₂-Based Composites for Ultra-High-Temperature Devices, Fabricated by SHS, Combining Strong and Weak Exothermic Reactions

TiB₂-based ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) were fabricated using elemental powders of Ti, B and C. The self-propagating high temperature synthesis (SHS) was carried out for the highly exothermic “in situ” reaction of TiB₂ formation and the “tailing” synthesis of boron carbide characterized by weak exothermicity. Two series of samples were fabricated, one of them being prepared with additional milling of raw materials. The effects of TiB₂ vol fraction as well as grain size of reactant were investigated. The results revealed that combustion was not successful for a TiB₂:B₄C molar ratio of 0.96, which corresponds to 40 vol% of TiB₂ in the composite, however the SHS reaction was initiated and self-propagated for the intended TiB₂:B₄C molar ratio of 2.16 or above. Finally B₁₃C₂ was formed as the matrix phase in each composite. Significant importance of the grain size of the C precursor with regard to the reaction completeness, which affected the microstructure homogeneity and hardness of investigated composites, was proved in this study. The grain size of Ti powder did not influence the microstructure of TiB₂ grains. The best properties (HV = 25.5 GPa, average grain size of 9 μm and homogenous microstructure), were obtained for material containing 80 vol% of TiB₂, fabricated using a graphite precursor of 2 μm.
