Research on the Sensing Characteristics of an Integrated Grid-like Sensor Based on a Triboelectric Nanogenerator

With the development of the integration and miniaturization of sensing devices, the concept of self-sensing devices has been proposed. A motion state is self-sensed via the structure or integration of an actuator in the construction of a sensing unit. This device is then used to capture the perception and measurement of states such as position, displacement, and speed. A triboelectric nanogenerator converts mechanical energy into electrical energy through the coupling effect of contact generation and electrostatic induction, which represents one of the reliable ways through which to realize integrated sensing. In this world, the power generation technology of the TENG is applied to a sensing device. The sensing characteristics of a grid-like TENG are designed and analyzed in freestanding triboelectric mode. Firstly, a relation model of displacement, velocity, voltage, and charge is established. The charge-transfer increment and current amounts are linearly related to the velocity. The open-circuit voltage has a positive relationship with the displacement. The maximum open-circuit voltage and the maximum charge transfer are fixed values, and they are only related to the inherent parameters of a triboelectric nanogenerator. Next, the sensor model is constructed using COMSOL Multiphysics 6.0. The simulation results show that the relationships between output voltage and charge transfer, as well as those between the increments of charge transfer, velocity, and displacement, are consistent with the results derived from the formula. Finally, a performance test of the designed sensor is carried out, and the results are consistent with the theoretical deduction and simulation. After analysis and processing of the output electrical signal by the host computer, it can feedback the frequency and speed value of the measured object. In addition, the output signal is stable, and there is no large fluctuation or attenuation during the 521-s vibration test. Because the working unit of the sensor is thin filmed, it is small in size, easy to integrate, and has no external power supply; moreover, it can be integrated into a device to realize the self-sensing of a motion state.

Robust Displacement Sensing by Direct-Current Triboelectric Nanogenerator Via Intelligent Waveform Recognition

A triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) facilitates the advancement of self-powered displacement sensors, which are important for many autonomous intelligent microsystems. However, the amplitude-based displacement sensing of conventional TENG-based sensors still suffers significantly from varying charge densities in harsh environments. Benefiting from the combination of intelligent signal processing algorithms and direct-current TENG sensors, this study proposes an environmentally robust character-based displacement sensing method that eliminates the influences of varying charge density in principle. The experimental results show that under drastically changing air humidity and other harsh environments, the sensing of threshold and maximum displacement has far superior consistency and stability than that of traditional amplitude-based TENG sensors, providing a novel route to realize reliable self-powered displacement sensing in environment-variable applications.

RF Line-Element Filters for Structural-Health-Monitoring Applications

RF-based sensors are an attractive option for structural-health-monitoring applications, due to the ease of access of interrogating such sensors. However, in most work, only scalar quantities are measured, giving no indication of the direction of strain or displacements. In this paper, a novel approach to displacement sensing is presented, in which relative displacements are tracked in all three degrees of freedom. The sensor design is based on a pair of coupled line-element filters whose frequency-dependent forward-power transfer is sensitive to relative positions between the two filters. Multiple features in the S₂₁ parameter are used to differentiate displacement direction. Gold-based devices were fabricated on quartz substrates, and characterised through vector-network-analyzer measurements. Results demonstrate uncoupled sensitivities of -1.41 MHz/mm, -1.74 MHz/mm and 12.23 MHz/mm for x, y and z displacements, respectively.

Simulation and Optimization of SNAP-Taper Coupling System in Displacement Sensing

Sensing applications based on whispering gallery mode (WGM) microcavities have attracted extensive attention recently, especially in displacement sensing applications. However, the traditional displacement sensing scheme based on shift in a single resonance wavelength, has a lot of drawbacks. Herein, a novel displacement sensing scheme based on the surface nanoscale axial photonics (SNAP) is proposed to achieve a wide range and high-resolution displacement sensor through analyzing the transmittance of multiple axial modes. By analyzing the surface plot of the resonance spectrum with different coupling positions, the ideal coupling parameters and ERV for displacement sensing are obtained. In the following, displacement sensing with high sensitivity and a wide range is theoretically realized through adjusting the sensitivity threshold and the number of modes. Finally, we present our views on the current challenges and the future development of the displacement sensing based on an SNAP resonator. We believe that a comprehensive understanding on this sensing scheme would significantly contribute to the advancement of the SNAP resonator for a broad range of applications.

Ghost Beam Suppression in Deep Frequency Modulation Interferometry for Compact On-Axis Optical Heads

We present a compact optical head design for wide-range and low noise displacement sensing using deep frequency modulation interferometry (DFMI). The on-axis beam topology is realised in a quasi-monolithic component and relies on cube beamsplitters and beam transmission through perpendicular surfaces to keep angular alignment constant when operating in air or in a vacuum, which leads to the generation of ghost beams that can limit the phase readout linearity. We investigated the coupling of these beams into the non-linear phase readout scheme of DFMI and implemented adjustments of the phase estimation algorithm to reduce this effect. This was done through a combination of balanced detection and the inherent orthogonality of beat signals with different relative time-delays in deep frequency modulation interferometry, which is a unique feature not available for heterodyne, quadrature or homodyne interferometry.

Gear Tooth Profile Reconstruction via Geometrically Compensated Laser Triangulation Measurements

Precision modeling of the hydraulic gear pump pressure dynamics depends on the accurate prediction of volumetric displacement in the inter-tooth spaces of the gear. By accurate reconstruction of the gear profile, detailed transient volumetric information can be determined. Therefore, this paper reports a non-contact gear measurement device using two opposing laser triangulation sensors, and the key geometrical models to reconstruct the profile with geometrical error compensation. An optimization-based key parameter calculation method is also proposed to find the unknown orientation of the sensor. Finally, an experimental setup is established, the performance of the device is tested and the geometric model is validated. Initial results showed that the method is able to reconstruct the target tooth profile and compensated results can reduce the geometrical error by up to 98% compared to the uncalibrated ones.
