The Preliminary Study on Preparation Technology of PolyHb-SOD-CAT-CA - The Effects of Different Extractants

Aim： As a new generation of blood substitutes, polyHb-SOD-CAT-CA has shown good application prospects in the existing research and explorations, resulting in the necessity of research on its process and preparation technology for future development.

INTRODUCTION

To explore the alternative to extractants for the preparation technology of polyHb-SOD-CAT-CA derived both from bovine blood and human cord blood, compared to the toluene currently used in the existing studies, several organic solvents, including n-hexane and ethyl ether, were investigated during the polyHb-SOC-CAT-CA preparation process.

METHODS

During the technological process, the effects of investigated organic extractants on the properties and stability of hemoglobin and enzymes, including SOD, CAT and CA, were investigated by monitoring the property indexes of macromolecules, including Hb concentrations, MetHb contents, molecular weight distribution, oxygen affinity of Hb, enzymes activities, and so on.

RESULTS

Among the investigated experimental groups, the results, including the Hb recoveries, MetHb contents, oxygen affinity, the molecular weight distribution of obtained complex, and enzyme activity, presented to be the best in n-hexane groups, followed by those in toluene groups, and these results in ether groups showed to be the worst. Meanwhile, during the preparation process, both for bovine and human cord derivatives, the changing of properties indexes of Hb and enzymes investigated demonstrated similar declining trends on the whole, and the oxygen-carrying properties and enzyme activities showed to be in the effective range.

CONCLUSION

Among the investigated organic extractants, both for preparation of bovine and human cord-derived polyHb-SOD-CAT-CA complex, n-hexane indicated to have much less negative influence on the properties and stability of Hb and enzyme molecules, including SOD, CAT, and CA. Moreover, the obtained human cord blood polyHb-SOD-CAT-CA also showed effective oxygen-carrying properties and enzyme activities, suggesting the promising application prospects of polyHb-SOD-CAT-CA and the new generation HBOC products in the future.

Composition, morphology, interfacial rheology and emulsifying ability of soy hull polysaccharides extracted with ammonium oxalate and sodium citrate as extractants

BACKGROUND

Soy hull, a by-product of crop processing, is rich in pectin-like polysaccharides that have potential for thickening, gelling and emulsifying applications. The effect of ammonium oxalate (SHPA) and sodium citrate (SHPS) on the conformation, physicochemical properties and emulsifying ability of soy hull polysaccharide (SHP) were investigated.

RESULTS

The composition analysis showed that SHPS had more polysaccharide, protein, and higher molecular weight than SHPA. Images of atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that SHPS molecules appeared spherical bodies with smooth and firm surfaces, while SHPA molecules appeared chain-like bodies with rough and wrinkled surface. At the oil-water interface, SHPS adsorbed faster and formed a more elastic interfacial layer than SHPA. The characterization of the prepared emulsions showed that the SHPS emulsion was a smaller particle size and more stable system within 30 days than SHPA emulsion, especially at the SHPS concentration of 9 mg mL^-1 . Images of cryo-scanning electron microscopy (cryo-SEM) also demonstrated SHPS formed clearer network structure on the surface of the oil droplets, compared to SHPA.

CONCLUSION

Overall, ammonium oxalate and sodium citrate significantly influenced the composition and properties of the SHP. SHPS exhibited a better emulsifying ability than SHPA, which was mainly due to the higher protein content of SHPS and the sodium ion (Na⁺ ) residue of sodium citrate. This study is useful for the extraction and application of SHP and other plant-based polysaccharides. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Recent Progress in Ionic Liquid Extraction for the Separation of Rare Earth Elements

This review summarizes recent progress in solvent extraction of rare earth elements (REEs) using an ionic liquid (IL) as the extraction solvent. These IL extraction systems are advantageous owing to the affinity of ILs for both charged and neutral hydrophobic species, in contrast to conventional organic solvent extraction systems. Herein, REE extraction studies using ILs are detailed and classified based on the type of extraction system, namely extraction using anionic ligands, extraction using neutral ligands, synergistic extraction, extraction without extractants, and a specific system using task-specific ionic liquids (TSILs). In IL extraction systems, the extracted complexes are often different from those in organic solvent systems, and the REE extraction and separation efficiencies are often significantly enhanced. Synergistic IL extraction is an effective approach to improving the extractability and separability of REEs. The development of novel TSILs suitable for IL extraction systems is also effective for REE separation.

Synthesis and properties of calix[4]arene telluropodant ethers as Ag+ selective sensors and Ag+, Hg2+ extractants

Three novel phenyltelluroalkoxyl functionalized tweezer-like calix[4]arenes 6-8 and two monophenyltelluropropoxyl functionalized calix[4]arenes 10 (cone conformer) and 12 (partial cone conformer) were synthesized and characterized. They are good Ag(+)-selective ionophores in ion-selective electrodes evaluated by electromotive force measurements of polymer membrane electrodes. The tweezer-like ionophores 6-8 showed excellent extraction ability towards Ag(+) and Hg(2+).
