[Structure-activity relationship of Lycium barbarum polysaccharides]

As a traditional Chinese herb and functional food, the fruits of Lycium barbarum has been widely used for thousands of years in China. L. barbarum polysaccharides(LBPs) are predominant active components, which have immunomodulatory, antioxidant, hypoglycemic, neuroprotective, anti-tumor, and prebiotic activities. The molecular weight, monosaccharide composition, glycosidic bond, branching degree, protein content, chemical modification, and spatial structure of LBPs are closely related to their biological activity. Based on the previous studies of this research team, this paper systematically combed and integrated the research progress of structure, function, and structure-activity relationship of LBPs. At the same time, some problems restricting the clarification of the structure-activity relationship of LBPs were considered and prospected, hoping to provide references for the high value utilization of LBPs and in-depth exploration of their health value.

Relief effects of Laoshan cherry extracts as a dietary supplement against the symptoms of acute gouty arthritis in rats induced by urate crystals

We evaluated the effects of Laoshan cherry as a food or dietary supplement on relieving the symptoms of acute gouty arthritis in rats induced by urate crystals. Rats in groups of 10 were given Laoshan cherry functional extracts at doses of 5, 10, and 20 mg/kg by oral gavage for 21 days and then injected with a sodium nitrate suspension in the rear ankle area as an induced acute gouty arthritis model. The ankle swelling and inflammations in the model (no treatment) group increased significantly compared with blank group; the ankle inflammations reduced in experimental groups receiving three different doses of the cherry extract and the joint swelling reduced in the high-dose group by 43% compared with the model group. Serum uric acid and xanthine oxidase activities were also elevated in the model group and these parameters were reduced by a maximum of 8% and 33%, respectively, in the rats receiving the cherry extracts. The serum levels of the inflammatory cytokine IL-1β in the high-dose group decreased by 12% compared with the model group. These results demonstrated that the cherries possess a functional substance that has a significant alleviating effect on the symptoms of gouty arthritis in rats induced by sodium urate injection.

Health Functionality and Quality Control of Laver (Porphyra, Pyropia): Current Issues and Future Perspectives as an Edible Seaweed

The growing interest in laver as a food product and as a source of substances beneficial to health has led to global consumer demand for laver produced in a limited area of northeastern Asia. Here we review research into the benefits of laver consumption and discuss future perspectives on the improvement of laver product quality. Variation in nutritional/functional values among product types (raw and processed (dried, roasted, or seasoned) laver) makes product-specific nutritional analysis a prerequisite for accurate prediction of health benefits. The effects of drying, roasting, and seasoning on the contents of both beneficial and harmful substances highlight the importance of managing laver processing conditions. Most research into health benefits has focused on substances present at high concentrations in laver (porphyran, Vitamin B12, taurine), with assessment of the expected effects of laver consumption. Mitigation of chemical/microbiological risks and the adoption of novel technologies to exploit under-reported biochemical characteristics of lavers are suggested as key strategies for the further improvement of laver product quality. Comprehensive analysis of the literature regarding laver as a food product and as a source of biomedical compounds highlights the possibilities and challenges for application of laver products.

Utilization of Flavonoid Compounds from Bark and Wood. III. Application in Health Foods

Dietary supplements ACAPOLIA® and ACAPOLIA PLUS have been sold in Japan under the classification "Foods in General" for a number of years. In April 2015, the classification of "Foods with Function Claims" was introduced in Japan to make more products available to the public that were clearly labeled with functional claims based on scientific evidence. In order to obtain recognition of ACAPOLIA PLUS under this new classification, the following information needed to be established. The safety of the bark extract of Acacia mearnsii was shown from the history of the long-term safe consumption of the extract as a health supplement, together with several additional clinical safety tests. Robinetinidol-(4α,8)-catechin was detected by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) in the supplement and was suitable for use as the basis of the quantitative analysis. In clinical tests, the amount of change in the plasma glucose concentration in the initial 60 min after rice consumption by a test group who had been given the Acadia extract was significantly lower than the glucose concentration in the group that was given a placebo. The blood glucose incremental areas under the curve (IAUC) in the first 60 min after rice consumption were also significantly lower in the Acacia group. The functional mechanisms were explained in terms of the inhibition of the absorption of glucose in the small intestine and the reduction in the activity of the digestive enzymes caused by proanthocyanidins derived from A. mearnsii bark. As a result, ACAPOLIA PLUS was accepted as a "Food with Function Claims" in August 2016. ACAPOLIA PLUS is now sold under this new classification. The growth of a typical intestinal bacterium is inhibited by an extract containing flavonoid compounds from A. mearnsii bark; thus, one of the future directions of study must be a comprehensive investigation of the effect that flavonoid compounds, proanthocyanidins, have on intestinal bacteria.
