Graded diagnosis of Helicobacter pylori infection using hyperspectral images of gastric juice

Helicobacter pylori is a potential underlying cause of many diseases. Although the Carbon 13 breath test is considered the gold standard for detection, it is high cost and low public accessibility in certain areas limit its widespread use. In this study, we sought to use machine learning and deep learning algorithm models to classify and diagnose H. pylori infection status. We used hyperspectral imaging system to gather gastric juice images and then retrieved spectral feature information between 400 and 1000 nm. Two different data processing methods were employed, resulting in the establishment of one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) datasets. In the binary classification task, the random forest model achieved a prediction accuracy of 83.27% when learning features from 1D data, with a specificity of 84.56% and a sensitivity of 92.31%. In the ternary classification task, the ResNet model learned from 2D data and achieved a classification accuracy of 91.48%.

Research Review on Quality Detection of Fresh Tea Leaves Based on Spectral Technology

As the raw material for tea making, the quality of tea leaves directly affects the quality of finished tea. The quality of fresh tea leaves is mainly assessed by manual judgment or physical and chemical testing of the content of internal components. Physical and chemical methods are more mature, and the test results are more accurate and objective, but traditional chemical methods for measuring the biochemical indexes of tea leaves are time-consuming, labor-costly, complicated, and destructive. With the rapid development of imaging and spectroscopic technology, spectroscopic technology as an emerging technology has been widely used in rapid non-destructive testing of the quality and safety of agricultural products. Due to the existence of spectral information with a low signal-to-noise ratio, high information redundancy, and strong autocorrelation, scholars have conducted a series of studies on spectral data preprocessing. The correlation between spectral data and target data is improved by smoothing noise reduction, correction, extraction of feature bands, and so on, to construct a stable, highly accurate estimation or discrimination model with strong generalization ability. There have been more research papers published on spectroscopic techniques to detect the quality of tea fresh leaves. This study summarizes the principles, analytical methods, and applications of Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) in the nondestructive testing of the quality and safety of fresh tea leaves for the purpose of tracking the latest research advances at home and abroad. At the same time, the principles and applications of other spectroscopic techniques including Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), Mid-infrared spectroscopy (MIRS), Raman spectroscopy (RS), and other spectroscopic techniques for non-destructive testing of quality and safety of fresh tea leaves are also briefly introduced. Finally, in terms of technical obstacles and practical applications, the challenges and development trends of spectral analysis technology in the nondestructive assessment of tea leaf quality are examined.

Hyperspectral imaging combined with CNN for maize variety identification

Introduction

As the third largest food crop in the world, maize has wide varieties with similar appearances, which makes identification difficult. To solve the problem of identification of hybrid maize varieties, a method based on hyperspectral image technology combined with a convolutional neural network (CNN) is proposed to identify maize varieties.

Methods

In this study, 735 maize seeds from seven half-parent hybrid maize varieties were regarded as the research object. The maize seed images in the range of 900 ~ 1700nm were obtained by hyperspectral image acquisition system. The region of interest (ROI) of the embryo surface was selected, and the spectral reflectance of maize seeds was extracted. After Savitzky-Golay (SG) Smoothing pretreatment, Maximum Normalization (MN) pretreatment was performed. The 56 feature wavelengths were selected by Competitive Adaptive Reweighting Algorithm (CARS) and Successive Projection Algorithm (SPA). And the 56 wavelengths were mapped to high-dimensional space by high-dimensional feature mapping and then reconstructed into three-dimensional image features. A five-layer convolution neural network was used to identify three-dimensional image features, and nine (SG+MN)-(CARS+SPA)-CNN maize variety identification models were established by changing the input feature dimension and the depth factor size of the model layer.

Results and Discussion

The results show that the maize variety classification model works best, when the input feature dimension is 768 and the layer depth factor d is 1.0. At this point, the model accuracy of the test set is 96.65% and the detection frame rate is1000 Fps/s in GPU environment, which can realize the rapid and effective non-destructive detection of maize varieties. This study provides a new idea for the rapid and accurate identification of maize seeds and seeds of other crops.

Application of Hyperspectral Imaging as a Nondestructive Technology for Identifying Tomato Maturity and Quantitatively Predicting Lycopene Content

Maturity is a crucial indicator in assessing the quality of tomatoes, and it is closely related to lycopene content. Using hyperspectral imaging, this study aimed to monitor tomato maturity and predict its lycopene content at different maturity stages. Standard normal variable (SNV) transformation was applied to preprocess the hyperspectral data. Then, using competitive adaptive reweighted sampling (CARS), the characteristic wavelengths were selected to simplify the calibration models. Based on the full and characteristic wavelengths, a support vector classifier (SVC) model was developed to determine tomato maturity qualitatively. The results demonstrated that the classification accuracy using the characteristic wavelength led to the obtention of better results with an accuracy of 95.83%. In addition, the support vector regression (SVR) and partial least squares regression (PLSR) models were utilized to predict lycopene content. With a coefficient of determination for prediction (R2P) of 0.9652 and a root mean square error for prediction (RMSEP) of 0.0166 mg/kg, the SVR model exhibited the best quantitative prediction capacity based on the characteristic wavelengths. Following this, a visual distribution map was created to evaluate the lycopene content in tomato fruit intuitively. The results demonstrated the viability of hyperspectral imaging for detecting tomato maturity and quantitatively predicting the lycopene content during storage.

[Origin identification of Poria cocos based on hyperspectral imaging technology]

To realize the non-destructive and rapid origin discrimination of Poria cocos in batches, this study established the P. cocos origin recognition model based on hyperspectral imaging combined with machine learning. P. cocos samples from Anhui, Fujian, Guangxi, Hubei, Hunan, Henan and Yunnan were used as the research objects. Hyperspectral data were collected in the visible and near infrared band(V-band, 410-990 nm) and shortwave infrared band(S-band, 950-2 500 nm). The original spectral data were divided into S-band, V-band and full-band. With the original data(RD) of different bands, multiplicative scatter correction(MSC), standard normal variation(SNV), S-G smoothing(SGS), first derivative(FD), second derivative(SD) and other pretreatments were carried out. Then the data were classified according to three different types of producing areas: province, county and batch. The origin identification model was established by partial least squares discriminant analysis(PLS-DA) and linear support vector machine(LinearSVC). Finally, confusion matrix was employed to evaluate the optimal model, with F1 score as the evaluation standard. The results revealed that the origin identification model established by FD combined with LinearSVC had the highest prediction accuracy in full-band range classified by province, V-band range by county and full-band range by batch, which were 99.28%, 98.55% and 97.45%, respectively, and the overall F1 scores of these three models were 99.16%, 98.59% and 97.58%, respectively, indicating excellent performance of these models. Therefore, hyperspectral imaging combined with LinearSVC can realize the non-destructive, accurate and rapid identification of P. cocos from different producing areas in batches, which is conducive to the directional research and production of P. cocos.

[Research and application of intelligent hyperspectral analysis technology for Chinese materia medica]

With the development of imaging technology and artificial intelligence, hyperspectral imaging technology provides a fast, non-destructive, intelligent, and precise new method for the analysis of Chinese materia medica(CMM). This paper summarized the methods and applications of hyperspectral imaging technology combined with intelligent analysis technology in the field of CMM in recent years, focusing on the acquisition and preprocessing of hyperspectral data, intelligent analysis methods of hyperspectral data, and practical cases of these technologies in the field of CMM. Hyperspectral data of CMM can provide spectral information with nanometer-level resolution and rich spatial texture information simultaneously. This paper summarized the acquisition process, including black-and-white board calibration and region-of-interest extraction, and preprocessing methods including smoothing, differentiation, scale-space, and scattering correction. The feature extraction methods in terms of spectral, spatial, color, and texture were briefly described, and common modeling methods were summarized. Finally, this paper reviewed the research cases of the application of the above methods to the fields of CMM, such as authenticity identification, origin tracing, variety recognition, year identification, sulfur fumigation degree determination, and quantitative measurement.

[Hyperspectral imaging technology distinguishes between Puerariae Lobatae Radix and Puerariae Lobatae Caulis]

Puerariae Lobatae Radix, the dried root of Pueraria lobata, is a traditional Chinese medicine with a long history. Puerariae Lobatae Caulis as an adulterant is always mixed into Puerariae Lobatae Radix for sales in the market. This study employed hyperspectral imaging(HSI) to distinguish between the two products. VNIR lens(spectral scope of 410-990 nm) and SWIR lens(spectral scope of 950-2 500 nm) were used for image acquiring. Multi-layer perceptron(MLP), partial least squares discriminant analysis(PLS-DA), and support vector machine(SVM) were employed to establish the full-waveband models and select the effective wavelengths for the distinguishing between Puerariae Lobatae Caulis and Puerariae Lobatae Radix, which provided technical and data support for the development of quick inspection equipment based on HSI. The results showed that MLP model outperformed PLS-DA and SVM models in the accuracy of discrimination with full wavebands in VNIR, SWIR, and VNIR+SWIR lens, which were 95.26%, 99.11%, and 99.05%, respectively. The discriminative band selection(DBS) algorithm was employed to select the effective wavelengths, and the discrimination accuracy was 93.05%, 98.05%, and 98.74% in the three different spectral scopes, respectively. On this basis, the MLP model combined with the effective wavelengths within the range of 2 100-2 400 nm can achieve the accuracy of 97.74%, which was close to that obtained with the full waveband. This waveband can be used to develop quick inspection devices based on HSI for the rapid and non-destructive distinguishing between Puerariae Lobatae Radix and Puerariae Lobatae Caulis.

Non-destructive discrimination of homochromatic foreign materials in cut tobacco based on VIS-NIR hyperspectral imaging

BACKGROUND

The presence of foreign materials (FM) not only reduces the commercial value of tobacco and the quality of cigarette products, but also affects the aroma and flavor of cigarettes. Existing tobacco deblending equipment has received little study with respect to homochromatic FM. In the present study, visible-near infrared (VIS-NIR) hyperspectral imaging technique combined with chemometrics were used to identify and visualize the homochromatic FM on the surface of thining tobacco. A comparison with conventional vision method was made to analyze the feasibility of the method. The importance of detecting FM in cut tobacco was further demonstrated by first studying the volatile organic compounds produced in cigarette mixed FM smoke and their effects on human health before conducting hyperspectral experiments.

RESULTS

The results indicated that solid-phase microextraction and gas chromatography mass spectrometry could detect volatile organic compounds in mainstream cigarette smoke that were not cigarette components and affected consumer health. Then, spectral features of the samples were extracted from hyperspectral images for building identification models to distinguish FM from cut tobacco. The visual RGB values of cut tobacco and FM were also used for the analysis of the recognition models. The results showed that the accuracy, precision and recall reached 100.00% using the back propagation artificial neural network classification model based on the principal component analysis raw wavelengths. The visualization results based on the optimal model produced clearer localization than conventional computer vision method.

CONCLUSION

The present study revealed that the VIS-NIR hyperspectral imaging technology had advantage in the detection and localization of FM on the surface of thinning tobacco, which provided a foundation for improving the quality and safety of cut tobacco production. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Hyperspectral technique combined with stacking and blending ensemble learning method for detection of cadmium content in oilseed rape leaves

BACKGROUND

Oilseed rape, as one of the most important oil crops, is an important source of vegetable oil and protein for mankind. As a non-essential element for plant growth, heavy metal cadmium (Cd) is easily absorbed by plants. Cd will inhibit the photosynthesis of plants, destroy the cell structure, slow the growth of plants, and affect their development and yield. It is necessary to develop a method based on visible near-infrared (NIR) hyperspectral imaging (HSI) technology to quickly and nondestructively determine the Cd content in rape leaves.

RESULTS

Two-layer estimation models were established by combining visible-NIR HSI with ensemble learning methods (stacking and blending). One layer used support vector regression, extreme learning machine, decision tree, and random forest (RF) as basic learners, and the other layer used support vector regression or RF as a meta learner. Different models were used to analyze the spectra of rape treated with five Cd concentrations to obtain the best prediction method. The results showed that the best model to predict Cd content was the stacking ensemble model with RF as the meta learner, with coefficient of determination for prediction of 0.9815 and root-mean-square error for prediction of 5.8969 mg kg^-1 . A pseudo-color image was developed using this stacking model to visualize the content and distribution of Cd.

CONCLUSION

The combination of visible-NIR HSI technology and the stacking ensemble learning method is a feasible method to detect the Cd content in rape leaves, which has the potential of being rapid and nondestructive. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

Detection of peanut seed vigor based on hyperspectral imaging and chemometrics

Rapid nondestructive testing of peanut seed vigor is of great significance in current research. Before seeds are sown, effective screening of high-quality seeds for planting is crucial to improve the quality of crop yield, and seed vitality is one of the important indicators to evaluate seed quality, which can represent the potential ability of seeds to germinate quickly and whole and grow into normal seedlings or plants. Meanwhile, the advantage of nondestructive testing technology is that the seeds themselves will not be damaged. In this study, hyperspectral technology and superoxide dismutase activity were used to detect peanut seed vigor. To investigate peanut seed vigor and predict superoxide dismutase activity, spectral characteristics of peanut seeds in the wavelength range of 400-1000 nm were analyzed. The spectral data are processed by a variety of hot spot algorithms. Spectral data were preprocessed with Savitzky-Golay (SG), multivariate scatter correction (MSC), and median filtering (MF), which can effectively to reduce the effects of baseline drift and tilt. CatBoost and Gradient Boosted Decision Tree were used for feature band extraction, the top five weights of the characteristic bands of peanut seed vigor classification are 425.48nm, 930.8nm, 965.32nm, 984.0nm, and 994.7nm. XGBoost, LightGBM, Support Vector Machine and Random Forest were used for modeling of seed vitality classification. XGBoost and partial least squares regression were used to establish superoxide dismutase activity value regression model. The results indicated that MF-CatBoost-LightGBM was the best model for peanut seed vigor classification, and the accuracy result was 90.83%. MSC-CatBoost-PLSR was the optimal regression model of superoxide dismutase activity value. The results show that the R² was 0.9787 and the RMSE value was 0.0566. The results suggested that hyperspectral technology could correlate the external manifestation of effective peanut seed vigor.

Non-Destructive Hyperspectral Imaging for Rapid Determination of Catalase Activity and Ageing Visualization of Wheat Stored for Different Durations

(1) In order to accurately judge the new maturity of wheat and better serve the collection, storage, processing and utilization of wheat, it is urgent to explore a fast, convenient and non-destructively technology. (2) Methods: Catalase activity (CAT) is an important index to evaluate the ageing of wheat. In this study, hyperspectral imaging technology (850-1700 nm) combined with a BP neural network (BPNN) and a support vector machine (SVM) were used to establish a quantitative prediction model for the CAT of wheat with the classification of the ageing of wheat based on different storage durations. (3) Results: The results showed that the model of 1ST-SVM based on the full-band spectral data had the best prediction performance (R² = 0.9689). The SPA extracted eleven characteristic bands as the optimal wavelengths, and the established model of MSC-SPA-SVM showed the best prediction result with R² = 0.9664. (4) Conclusions: The model of MSC-SPA-SVM was used to visualize the CAT distribution of wheat ageing. In conclusion, hyperspectral imaging technology can be used to determine the CAT content and evaluate wheat ageing, rapidly and non-destructively.

Air Pollution Detection Using a Novel Snap-Shot Hyperspectral Imaging Technique

Air pollution has emerged as a global problem in recent years. Particularly, particulate matter (PM2.5) with a diameter of less than 2.5 μm can move through the air and transfer dangerous compounds to the lungs through human breathing, thereby creating major health issues. This research proposes a large-scale, low-cost solution for detecting air pollution by combining hyperspectral imaging (HSI) technology and deep learning techniques. By modeling the visible-light HSI technology of the aerial camera, the image acquired by the drone camera is endowed with hyperspectral information. Two methods are used for the classification of the images. That is, 3D Convolutional Neural Network Auto Encoder and principal components analysis (PCA) are paired with VGG-16 (Visual Geometry Group) to find the optical properties of air pollution. The images are classified into good, moderate, and severe based on the concentration of PM2.5 particles in the images. The results suggest that the PCA + VGG-16 has the highest average classification accuracy of 85.93%.

Artificial Intelligence Empowered Multispectral Vision Based System for Non-Contact Monitoring of Large Yellow Croaker (Larimichthys crocea) Fillets

A non-contact method was proposed to monitor the freshness (based on TVB-N and TBA values) of large yellow croaker fillets (Larimichthys crocea) by using a visible and near-infrared hyperspectral imaging system (400-1000 nm). In this work, the quantitative calibration models were built by using feed-forward neural networks (FNN) and partial least squares regression (PLSR). In addition, it was established that using a regression coefficient on the data can be further compressed by selecting optimal wavelengths (35 for TVB-N and 18 for TBA). The results validated that FNN has higher prediction accuracies than PLSR for both cases using full and selected reflectance spectra. Moreover, our FNN based model has showcased excellent performance even with selected reflectance spectra with rp = 0.978, R2p = 0.981, and RMSEP = 2.292 for TVB-N, and rp = 0.957, R2p = 0.916, and RMSEP = 0.341 for TBA, respectively. This optimal FNN model was then utilized for pixel-wise visualization maps of TVB-N and TBA contents in fillets.

Porcelain Insulator Crack Location and Surface States Pattern Recognition Based on Hyperspectral Technology

A porcelain insulator is an important part to ensure that the insulation requirements of power equipment can be met. Under the influence of their structure, porcelain insulators are prone to mechanical damage and cracks, which will reduce their insulation performance. After a long-term operation, crack expansion will eventually lead to breakdown and safety hazards. Therefore, it is of great significance to detect insulator cracks to ensure the safe and reliable operation of a power grid. However, most traditional methods of insulator crack detection involve offline detection or contact measurement, which is not conducive to the online monitoring of equipment. Hyperspectral imaging technology is a noncontact detection technology containing three-dimensional (3D) spatial spectral information, whereby the data provide more information and the measuring method has a higher safety than electric detection methods. Therefore, a model of positioning and state classification of porcelain insulators based on hyperspectral technology is proposed. In this model, image data were used to extract edges to locate cracks, and spectral information was used to classify the surface states of porcelain insulators with EfficientNet. Lastly, crack extraction was realized, and the recognition accuracy of cracks and normal states was 96.9%. Through an analysis of the results, it is proven that the crack detection method of a porcelain insulator based on hyperspectral technology is an effective non-contact online monitoring approach, which has broad application prospects in the era of the Internet of Things with the rapid development of electric power.

Application of hyperspectral technology in detection of agricultural products and food: A Review

Food is the foundation of human survival. With the development and progress of society, people increasingly focus on the problems of food quality and safety, which is closely related to human's health. Thus, the whole industrial chain from farmland to dining table need to be strictly controlled. Traditional detection methods are time-consuming, laborious, and destructive. In recent years, hyperspectral technology has been more and more applied to food safety and quality detection, because the technology can achieve rapid and nondestructive detection of food, and the requirement to experimental condition is low; operability is strong. In this paper, hyperspectral imaging technology was briefly introduced, and its application in agricultural products and food detection in recent years was systematically summarized, and the key points in the research process were deeply discussed. This work lays a solid foundation for the peers to the following in-depth research and application of this technology.

Identification of Soybean Varieties Using Hyperspectral Imaging Coupled with Convolutional Neural Network

Soybean variety is connected to stress resistance ability, as well as nutritional and commercial value. Near-infrared hyperspectral imaging was applied to classify three varieties of soybeans (Zhonghuang37, Zhonghuang41, and Zhonghuang55). Pixel-wise spectra were extracted and preprocessed, and average spectra were also obtained. Convolutional neural networks (CNN) using the average spectra and pixel-wise spectra of different numbers of soybeans were built. Pixel-wise CNN models obtained good performance predicting pixel-wise spectra and average spectra. With the increase of soybean numbers, performances were improved, with the classification accuracy of each variety over 90%. Traditionally, the number of samples used for modeling is large. It is time-consuming and requires labor to obtain hyperspectral data from large batches of samples. To explore the possibility of achieving decent identification results with few samples, a majority vote was also applied to the pixel-wise CNN models to identify a single soybean variety. Prediction maps were obtained to present the classification results intuitively. Models using pixel-wise spectra of 60 soybeans showed equivalent performance to those using the average spectra of 810 soybeans, illustrating the possibility of discriminating soybean varieties using few samples by acquiring pixel-wise spectra.

Identification of Maize Kernel Vigor under Different Accelerated Aging Times Using Hyperspectral Imaging

Seed aging during storage is irreversible, and a rapid, accurate detection method for seed vigor detection during seed aging is of great importance for seed companies and farmers. In this study, an artificial accelerated aging treatment was used to simulate the maize kernel aging process, and hyperspectral imaging at the spectral range of 874⁻1734 nm was applied as a rapid and accurate technique to identify seed vigor under different accelerated aging time regimes. Hyperspectral images of two varieties of maize processed with eight different aging duration times (0, 12, 24, 36, 48, 72, 96 and 120 h) were acquired. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to conduct a qualitative analysis on maize kernels under different accelerated aging time conditions. Second-order derivatization was applied to select characteristic wavelengths. Classification models (support vector machine-SVM) based on full spectra and optimal wavelengths were built. The results showed that misclassification in unprocessed maize kernels was rare, while some misclassification occurred in maize kernels after the short aging times of 12 and 24 h. On the whole, classification accuracies of maize kernels after relatively short aging times (0, 12 and 24 h) were higher, ranging from 61% to 100%. Maize kernels with longer aging time (36, 48, 72, 96, 120 h) had lower classification accuracies. According to the results of confusion matrixes of SVM models, the eight categories of each maize variety could be divided into three groups: Group 1 (0 h), Group 2 (12 and 24 h) and Group 3 (36, 48, 72, 96, 120 h). Maize kernels from different categories within one group were more likely to be misclassified with each other, and maize kernels within different groups had fewer misclassified samples. Germination test was conducted to verify the classification models, the results showed that the significant differences of maize kernel vigor revealed by standard germination tests generally matched with the classification accuracies of the SVM models. Hyperspectral imaging analysis for two varieties of maize kernels showed similar results, indicating the possibility of using hyperspectral imaging technique combined with chemometric methods to evaluate seed vigor and seed aging degree.

Detection of Oil Chestnuts Infected by Blue Mold Using Near-Infrared Hyperspectral Imaging Combined with Artificial Neural Networks

Mildew damage is a major reason for chestnut poor quality and yield loss. In this study, a near-infrared hyperspectral imaging system in the 874⁻1734 nm spectral range was applied to detect the mildew damage to chestnuts caused by blue mold. Principal component analysis (PCA) scored images were firstly employed to qualitatively and intuitively distinguish moldy chestnuts from healthy chestnuts. Spectral data were extracted from the hyperspectral images. A successive projections algorithm (SPA) was used to select 12 optimal wavelengths. Artificial neural networks, including back propagation neural network (BPNN), evolutionary neural network (ENN), extreme learning machine (ELM), general regression neural network (GRNN) and radial basis neural network (RBNN) were used to build models using the full spectra and optimal wavelengths to distinguish moldy chestnuts. BPNN and ENN models using full spectra and optimal wavelengths obtained satisfactory performances, with classification accuracies all surpassing 99%. The results indicate the potential for the rapid and non-destructive detection of moldy chestnuts by hyperspectral imaging, which would help to develop online detection system for healthy and blue mold infected chestnuts.
