Abstract
(Purpose) While urinary retention and urinary tract infections accompanying residual urine are often experienced following proximal femoral fractures (femoral neck fractures and trochanteric fractures) in clinical practice, the pathology of the onset of voiding dysfunction for this disease is unclear since the nervous system associated with urination is not damaged due to the fracture not reaching the pelvis. Therefore, we exploratorily examined the factors related to voiding dysfunction in proximal femoral fractures. (Subjects and method) Among the patients who underwent surgery for proximal femoral fractures, we examined the relation between the proportion of cases in which withdrawing urine was required for residual urine after removing the urethral catheter and the differences in the fracture sites, pain, the ability to maintain a sitting position, the strength to bend the hip joints, and the volume of the iliopsoas muscle. (Results) The proportion of cases in which withdrawing urine was required was higher in the group suffering trochanteric fractures than the group suffering femoral neck fractures (41% vs. 11%), while the strength to bend the hip joints was lower. Regarding trochanteric fractures, compared to the group in which no urine was withdrawn, the group in which urine was withdrawn included more of the unstable type in which the fracture reached the lesser trochanter, which is the femoral insertion of the iliopsoas muscle (56% vs. 82%), in addition to having a significant decrease in the strength to bend the hip joints. Regarding trochanteric fractures, compared to the group without injury in lesser trochanter, the group with injury in lesser trochanter had a higher proportion of cases in which withdrawing urine was required (23% vs. 51%), in addition to the iliopsoas muscle thereof having been atrophied (-15.7% vs. -35.2%). (Conclusion) As factors related to voiding dysfunction following surgery for proximal femoral fractures, the relation between fracture sites, the strength to bend the hip joints associated with maintaining posture, the presence of injuries in the lesser trochanter, and the volume of the iliopsoas muscle were suggested. Therefore, it is possible that the proportion of cases in which the withdrawal of urine was required increased with the increase in residual urine due to the decrease in the ability to maintain a urinating posture until the bladder is completely empty.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Progressive fibrous dysplasia ossification (FOP) is a rare genetic disease characterized by congenital bone malformations and soft tissue masses that progress to heterotopic ossification. Congenital great toe deformity and progressive heterotopic ossifications with an anatomical and temporal pattern are the two classical clinical characteristics of FOP. We present a unique case of FOP characterized by mandibular angle fascial contracture and back and iliopsoas muscle ossification managed via surgery in a 13 year old girl. CASE PRESENTATION A 13 year old girl with a history of right cervical fascial release surgery and back heterotopic osteotomy presented to our clinic due to recurrence of heterotopic ossification, scoliosis, and progressive joint stiffness. Computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examination confirmed heterotopic ossification of the left back and left iliopsoas muscle and spinal scoliosis. Two years after the surgery, the patient presented with recurrence of back heterotopic ossification and rapidly advancing ossification of the left iliopsoas muscle. Six months after surgery, the patient had no disability, pain and clinical recurrence, and the joint function recovered. CONCLUSIONS In patients with multiple-site heterotopic ossification caused by FOP, oral function and hip stiffness improve with detailed facial release surgery and rehabilitation treatment. However, dorsal fascia ossification and spinal scoliosis can recur shortly after resection.

Abstract
The majority of prostate cancer cases carry a favorable prognosis due to various screening protocols and the progression of surgical/medical techniques. Prostate cancers that metastasize to the skeletal system bear worse five-year survival rates as they are indicative of widespread dissemination. There are very few cases of prostate cancer invading the iliopsoas muscle described in the medical literature. Here, we present the case of a 61-year-old male who was diagnosed with prostate cancer with metastasis to the bones and iliopsoas muscle. Given the advanced presentation of his disease, the patient underwent a prostate biopsy. He was initiated on bicalutamide and transitioned to leuprolide and docetaxel with eventual radiation therapy.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Patients experience variable long-term improvement in chronic back pain despite successful spinal cord stimulation (SCS) trials. Iliopsoas (IP) size has been shown to differ between patients with low back pain and healthy controls. In this study, we examine whether IP muscle cross-sectional area (CSA) is associated with SCS outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS We examined patients for whom we had lumbar MRIs 6.3 years prior to SCS and had baseline and one-year outcome data. Percent change from baseline to one year was calculated for Numeric Rating Scale (NRS), Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Pain Catastrophizing Scale (PCS), and McGill Pain Questionnaire (MPQ). Correlations between IP muscle CSA, ratio of iliopsoas muscle size to the vertebral body area (P/VBA), and the ratio of iliopsoas muscle size to BMI (P/BMI) were examined. Sex differences were considered. RESULTS A total of 73 subjects were included in this study including 30 females and 43 males. Males had significantly larger IP (males 15.70 ± 0.58, females 9.72 ± 0.43; p < 0.001), P/VBA (males 1.00 ± 0.04, females 0.76 ± 0.03, p < 0.001) and P/BMI ratio (males 0.51 ± 0.02, females 0.32 ± 0.01; p < 0.001) than females. In females, P/VBA predicted NRS worst pain scores (β = 0.82, p = 0.004, r2 = 0.55) and BDI (β = 0.59, p = 0.02, r2 = 0.24). In males, P/BMI was a significant predictor of BDI outcomes scores (β = 0.45, p = 0.03, r2 = 0.16). Males who had more muscle mass measured by iliopsoas size had more depression as measured using BDI (p = 0.03, r = 0.61). Females with less muscle mass measured by P/VBA also experienced more depression (p = 0.02, r = 0.74). CONCLUSIONS Our study showed that psoas measurements correlated with various pain outcomes specifically. P/VBA was most predictive in females and P/BMI in males. Depression correlated with P/BMI, reinforcing the complex relationship between depression and constant chronic pain. Tertile analyses further showed a relationship between iliopsoas CSA and depression in males and females. We provide preliminary data of sex-specific psoas measurements as a risk factor for worse SCS outcomes.

Abstract
Simple Summary Acute trauma of the iliopsoas muscle is often observed in sports and very active dogs. Nevertheless, the diagnosis is not always correctly addressed and can be underestimated during a clinical visit because it is generally secondary to other orthopedic and neurological issues. However, a correct diagnosis can lead to complete recovery of lameness in dogs who submit to physiotherapy. This paper has investigated, in a preliminary observational study, the recovery time for dogs affected by primary iliopsoas lesions and their return to normal activity. Abstract This preliminary study has investigated the outcome of physiotherapy in 10 dogs affected by a primary lesion of the iliopsoas muscle and the potential effects of sex, age, and breed on recovery. Ten dogs with primary injury of the iliopsoas muscle were retrospectively included in this study. Dogs were submitted to a rehabilitation program, characterized by a multimodal approach, including physical therapies and modalities. After recovery, patients were submitted to a further support period of rehabilitation to promote muscle strengthening and limit injury recurrence during their return to normal functional and sports activity. Border collies were highly represented. The recovery of lameness occurred after a mean of 22.6 ± 14.7 (median 18) days with a median number of five sessions. None of the examined variables affected the recovery time, except for the border collie breed, which showed a significantly faster recovery time; however, there was no difference between the breeds with regard to the number of sessions. Multimodal rehabilitation therapy may promote lameness recovery of mild-to-moderate iliopsoas lesions within 3 weeks. This preliminary study reports a clinical approach and recovery of primary iliopsoas lesions, findings that can provide clinicians with useful prognostic information for dogs involved in sports activities.

Abstract
The femoral nerve stretch test is an essential part of clinical neurological examinations. This test is performed alongside Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) to determine if there is any evidence of nerve root irritation, usually as a consequence of disc prolapse. The test occasionally gives false positive results. Why such false positives can occur, is subject to continued research, however, no obvious reason has yet emerged. We hypothesize that connectives of the femoral nerve may explain such a phenomenon. To see these connectives, we approached the femoral nerve from dorsal in 12 cases. With the use of ink injection into the subparaneural compartment of the femoral nerve and dissections, a thin transparent structure can clearly be seen that is separate from the epineurium, perineurium, and a paraneural sheath. A continuation of the paraneural sheath produces a fascia plate approximately 1.5 cm in width and with a thickness of around 3 mm, which not only circumnavigates the nerve but projects into the surrounding tissues. Our qualitative observations show that not only does this femoral nerve fascia plate exists, but it also contains nerves and vessels. Furthermore, we show that the femoral nerve is connected to the myofascial complex of the iliopsoas, and in a separate fascia plate from the iliopsoas fascia. This plate is a hitherto neglected connective which extends as far as the spinal dura mater. Evidence from our plastinates and histological sections suggests that when tension is applied to the femoral nerve during the femoral nerve stretch test, tension is also applied to the femoral nerve fascia plate. The femoral nerve fascia plate could be a specific factor that contributes to pain resulting in a false positive femoral nerve stretch test.

Abstract
Post-mortem examination of 74 racing greyhounds with sudden, unexpected death was undertaken at the Veterinary School, University of Nottingham, UK, from 2015 to 2019. These investigations revealed severe, acute haemoabdomen with extensive retroperitoneal haemorrhage and an underlying severe, unilateral iliopsoas tear in four cases (5.4%). In all four cases, unilateral trauma and haemorrhage affecting the right iliopsoas muscle was common near the caudal insertion. Despite the acute clinical event, three cases demonstrated histological evidence of previous muscle damage with muscular regeneration, fibrosis and evidence of chronic haemorrhage. To our knowledge, this is the first detailed description of exercise-induced trauma to the iliopsoas muscle leading to extensive haemoretroperitoneum and haemoabdomen with subsequent hypovolaemic shock and death in racing greyhounds.

Abstract
Femoral nerve palsy secondary to iliopsoas non-traumatic haematoma is a scarce complication with a treatment approach that remains controversial between conservative and surgical intervention. We present a case of a 64-year-old male patient under warfarin medication, who developed severe left hip and anterior thigh pain and femoral nerve palsy with no history of trauma. Laboratory studies revealed a prolonged international normalized ratio level of 4.5, and imaging studies revealed a large haematoma surrounding the left iliopsoas muscle (35 cm x 9 cm x 6 cm). The patient was treated conservatively with discontinuation of his anticoagulation remedy and vitamin K administration and recovered almost fully after eight months, following a rehabilitation programme. Patients who are on anticoagulants should raise a high index of suspicion. Conservative management can provide a good outcome; it requires, however, a long period of rehabilitation.

Abstract
A 65-year-old woman presented to a hospital with complaints of dyspnea and lumbar pain. Chest computed tomography (CT) showed left pleural effusion. Thoracentesis showed pleural effusion with elevated levels of amylase. Enhanced CT showed fluid accumulation from the thoracic crus of the diaphragm to the left iliopsoas muscle. Based on the postoperative notes following left nephrectomy performed 29 years ago, we suspected that the internal pancreatic fistula had resulted from the postoperative scar. Conservative management was performed. However, occlusion of the pancreatic fistula failed. Subsequently, she underwent pancreatic body tail spleen merger resection, and the pleural effusion disappeared.

Abstract
Undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma (UPS) is a soft tissue sarcoma, occurring most commonly on the lower extremities. We herein report a rare case of primary UPS adjacent to the ascending colon and in the right iliopsoas muscle. Computed tomography of the abdomen revealed large masses, and the patient experienced a high-grade fever, leukocytosis, elevated serum C-reactive protein level, and hematopoietic activation on 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography. This inflammatory reaction was caused by granulocyte colony-stimulating factor secreted by tumor cells. Surgical resection was performed, and the inflammatory reaction disappeared immediately. The patient received adjuvant chemotherapy and survived one year after the operation without evidence of recurrence.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Prenatal twisting of the femoral neck seems to result in an angle of anteversion or torsion, but the underlying process has not been elucidated. MATERIALS AND METHODS This study analysed sagittal, frontal and horizontal sections of 34 embryo and foetal specimens of gestational age (GA) 6-16 weeks (crown-rump length 21-130 mm). At GA 6-7 weeks, the iliopsoas (IP) and gluteus medius (GME) muscles were inserted into the anterior and posterior aspects of the femur, respectively, allowing both insertions to be viewed in a single sagittal section. RESULTS At GA 8 weeks, the greater trochanter and the femoral neck angle became evident, and the GME tendon was inserted into the upper tip of the trochanter. At GA 9 weeks, the location of IP insertion was to the medial side of the GME insertion. After 9 weeks, the IP insertion consisted of a wavy, tendino- us part of the psoas muscle and another part of the iliacus muscle, with many fibres of the latter muscle attached to the joint capsule. After GA 12 weeks, the IP was inserted into the anteromedial side of the greater trochanter, while the aponeurotic insertion of the GME wrapped around the trochanter. At GA 15-16 weeks, a deep flexion at the hip joint caused an alteration in the relative heights of the lesser and greater trochanter, with the former migrating from the inferior to the slightly superior side. CONCLUSIONS These findings indicate that twisting of the femoral neck started at GA 8-9 weeks.

Abstract
Crizotinib, which is effective in patients with anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) positive non-small cell lung cancer, is sometimes associated with the generation of complex renal cysts. A 56-year-old man with ALK positive adenocarcinoma received crizotinib. Ten months after the introduction of crizotinib, a cystic lesion developed from his right kidney to the iliopsoas muscle, accompanied by fever, anemia, and hypoproteinemia. After 17 months of treatment, crizotinib was switched to alectinib, followed by the recovery of hypoproteinemia and systemic inflammation. Switching to alectinib may be beneficial in patients demonstrating crizotinib-associated complex renal cysts with systemic inflammation and exhaustion.

Abstract
The iliopsoas of the rat is composed of two muscles - the psoas major muscle and the iliacus muscle. The psoas major muscle arises from all the lumbar vertebrae and the iliacus muscle from the fifth and sixth lumbar vertebrae and ilium. Their common insertion point is the lesser trochanter of the femur, and their common action is the lateral rotation of the femur and flexion of the hip joint. Unlike humans, the rat is a quadruped and only occasionally rises up on its hind legs. Therefore, it is expected that the fibre type composition of the rat iliopsoas muscle will be different than that of humans. The iliopsoas muscle of the rat is generally considered to be a fast muscle. However, previous studies of the fibre type composition of the rat psoas muscle showed different results. Moreover, very little is known about the composition of the rat iliacus muscle. The aim of our study was to examine the fibre type composition of the rat iliopsoas muscle in order to better understand the complex function of the listed muscle. The psoas major muscle was examined segmentally at four different levels of its origin. Type I, IIA, IIB and IIX muscle fibres were typed using monoclonal antibodies for myosin heavy chain identification. The percentage of muscle fibre types and muscle fibre cross-sectional areas were calculated. In our study we showed that in the rat iliopsoas muscle both the iliacus and the psoas major muscles had a predominance of fast muscle fibre types, with the highest percentage of the fastest IIB muscle fibres. Also, the IIB muscle fibres showed the largest cross-sectional area (CSA) in both muscles. As well, the psoas major muscle showed segmental differences of fibre type composition. Our results showed changes in percentages, as well as the CSAs of muscle fibre types in cranio-caudal direction. The most significant changes were visible in type IIB muscle fibres, where there was a decrease of percentages and the CSAs from the cranial towards the caudal part of the muscle. From our results it is evident that the rat iliopsoas muscle has a heterogeneous composition and is composed of all four muscle fibre types. Primarily, it is a fast, dynamic muscle with a predominance of fast type IIB muscle fibres with the largest CSAs. The composition of the rat psoas major muscles changes in a cranio-caudal direction, thus pointing to a more postural role of the caudal part of the muscle.

Abstract
Ibrutinib (Imbruvica; Pharmacyclics) is the first Food and Drug Administration–approved inhibitor of Burton’s tyrosine kinase (BTK). Attenuation of BTK signaling ultimately leads to inhibition of B-cell proliferation and apoptosis. After a series of clinical trials, the Food and Drug Administration approved ibrutinib in patients with relapsed chronic lymphocytic leukemia in 2014 and Waldenström’s macroglobulinemia in 2015. Those trials included rare grade 3+ hemorrhagic events associated with ibrutinib. Herein, we report a unique presentation of back pain due to iliopsoas muscle hemorrhage in a patient with Waldenström’s macroglobulinemia after initiation of ibrutinib.

Abstract
The article describes the modern literary data on classification, etiology, pathogenesis and predisposing factors in the development of purulent iliopsoitis. Where are clinical and morphological analysis of five deaths cases of purulent ileopsoitis. On the basis of these studies found that purulent ileopsoitis that occur in middle and old age, are more common in women, can be either unilateral or bilateral localization. Purulent ileopsoitis arises by forming abscess in the iliopsoas muscle. Primary ileopsoitis arises in connection with injuries gluteal and lumbar region. Secondary ileopsoit developed as a complication of inflammatory and neoplastic processes, with an initial mechanism for the development of the pathological process were necrotic changes in the external iliac lymph nodes. In vivo it is difficult to diagnose, that`s why is necessary to apply a comprehensive study, including clinical data, anamnesis, general clinical and laboratory parameters, instrumental methods.

Abstract
This report describes an apparent case of femoral nerve mononeuropathy in a 58-year-old equestrian due to mechanical stress. A woman presented at a chiropractic office complaining of right buttock pain radiating to the right groin and knee. A treatment plan, consisting of chiropractic adjustments in addition to stretching and myofascial therapy, was initiated. The goal was to reduce pain and inflammation in the sacroiliac articulation by restoring normal biomechanical function. A rehabilitation program to alleviate tension in the musculature was initiated to reduce mechanical stresses exerted on the femoral nerve. The patient received five treatments over a period of three weeks and became asymptomatic. Even though peripheral nerve entrapment is an uncommon condition, clinicians must not overlook the possibility of a femoral mononeuropathy as it can produce a complex presentation and lead to ineffective patient management.
