Colloidal Polymer-Templated Formation of Inorganic Nanocrystals and their Emerging Applications

Inorganic nanocrystals possess unique physicochemical properties compared to their bulk counterparts. Stabilizing agents are commonly used for the preparation of inorganic nanocrystals with controllable properties. Particularly, colloidal polymers have emerged as general and robust templates for in situ formation and confinement of inorganic nanocrystals. In addition to templating and stabilizing inorganic nanocrystals, colloidal polymers can tailor their physicochemical properties such as size, shape, structure, composition, surface chemistry, and so on. By incorporating functional groups into colloidal polymers, desired functions can be integrated with inorganic nanocrystals, advancing their potential applications. Here, recent advances in the colloidal polymer-templated formation of inorganic nanocrystals are reviewed. Seven types of colloidal polymers, including dendrimer, polymer micelle, stare-like block polymer, bottlebrush polymer, spherical polyelectrolyte brush, microgel, and single-chain nanoparticle, have been extensively applied for the synthesis of inorganic nanocrystals. Different strategies for the development of these colloidal polymer-templated inorganic nanocrystals are summarized. Then, their emerging applications in the fields of catalysis, biomedicine, solar cells, sensing, light-emitting diodes, and lithium-ion batteries are highlighted. Last, the remaining issues and future directions are discussed. This review will stimulate the development and application of colloidal polymer-templated inorganic nanocrystals.

Enhancing the Relative Sensitivity of V5+, V4+ and V3+ Based Luminescent Thermometer by the Optimization of the Stoichiometry of Y3Al5-xGaxO12 Nanocrystals

In this work the influence of the Ga³⁺ concentration on the luminescent properties and the abilities of the Y₃Al_5−xGa_xO₁₂: V nanocrystals to noncontact temperature sensing were investigated. It was shown that the increase of the Ga³⁺ amount enables enhancement of V⁴⁺ emission intensity in respect to the V³⁺ and V⁵⁺ and thus modify the color of emission. The introduction of Ga³⁺ ions provides the appearance of the crystallographic sites, suitable for V⁴⁺ occupation. Consequently, the increase of V⁴⁺ amount facilitates V⁵⁺ → V⁴⁺ interionic energy transfer throughout the shortening of the distance between interacting ions. The opposite thermal dependence of V⁴⁺ and V⁵⁺ emission intensities enables to create the bandshape luminescent thermometr of the highest relative sensitivity of V-based luminescent thermometers reported up to date (S_max, 2.64%/°C, for Y₃Al₂Ga₃O₁₂ at 0 °C). An approach of tuning the performance of Y₃Al_5−xGa_xO₁₂: V nanocrystals to luminescent temperature sensing, including the spectral response, maximal relative sensitivity and usable temperature range, by the Ga³⁺ doping was presented and discussed.

High-efficiency aqueous-solution-processed hybrid solar cells based on P3HT dots and CdTe nanocrystals

Without using any environmentally hazardous organic solution, we fabricated hybrid solar cells (HSCs) based on the aqueous-solution-processed poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) dots and CdTe nanocrystals (NCs). As a novel aqueous donor material, the P3HT dots are prepared through a reprecipitation method and present an average diameter of 2.09 nm. When the P3HT dots are mixed with the aqueous CdTe NCs, the dependence of the device performance on the donor-acceptor ratio shows that the optimized ratio is 1:24. Specifically, the dependence of the device performance on the active-layer thermal annealing conditions is investigated. As a result, the optimized annealing temperature is 265 °C, and the incorporation of P3HT dots as donor materials successfully reduced the annealing time from 1 h to 10 min. In addition, the transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy measurements demonstrate that the size of the CdTe NCs increased as the annealing time increased, and the annealing process facilitates the formation of a smoother interpenetrating network in the active layer. Therefore, charge separation and transport in the P3HT dots:CdTe NCs layer are more efficient. Eventually, the P3HT dots:CdTe NCs solar cells achieved 4.32% power conversion efficiency. The polymer dots and CdTe NCs based aqueous-solution-processed HSCs provide an effective way to avoid a long-time thermal annealing process of the P3HT dots:CdTe NCs layer and largely broaden the donor materials for aqueous HSCs.
