Recent Advances in Low-Dimensional Metal Oxides via Sol-Gel Method for Gas Detection

Low-dimensional metal oxides have drawn significant attention across various scientific domains due to their multifaceted applications, particularly in the field of environment monitoring. Their popularity is attributed to a constellation of unique properties, including their high surface area, robust chemical stability, and remarkable electrical conductivity, among others, which allow them to be a good candidate for detecting CO, CO2, H2, NH3, NO2, CH4, H2S, and volatile organic compound gases. In recent years, the Sol-Gel method has emerged as a powerful and versatile technique for the controlled synthesis of low-dimensional metal oxide materials with diverse morphologies tailored for gas sensing applications. This review delves into the manifold facets of the Sol-Gel processing of metal oxides and reports their derived morphologies and remarkable gas-sensing properties. We comprehensively examine the synthesis conditions and critical parameters governing the formation of distinct morphologies, including nanoparticles, nanowires, nanorods, and hierarchical nanostructures. Furthermore, we provide insights into the fundamental principles underpinning the gas-sensing mechanisms of these materials. Notably, we assess the influence of morphology on gas-sensing performance, highlighting the pivotal role it plays in achieving exceptional sensitivity, selectivity, and response kinetics. Additionally, we highlight the impact of doping and composite formation on improving the sensitivity of pure metal oxides and reducing their operation temperature. A discussion of recent advances and emerging trends in the field is also presented, shedding light on the potential of Sol-Gel-derived nanostructures to revolutionize the landscape of gas sensing technologies.

Zero-Dimensional Tellurium-Based Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Halide Single Crystal with Yellow-Orange Emission from Self-Trapped Excitons

Organic-inorganic hybrid halides and their analogs that exhibit efficient broadband emission from self-trapped excitons (STEs) offers an unique pathway towards realization of highly efficient white light sources for lighting applications. An appropriate dilution of ns2 ions into a halide host is essential to produce auxiliary emissions. However, the realization of ns2 cation-based halides phosphor that can be excited by blue light-emitting diode (LED) is still rarely reported. In this study, a zero-dimensional Te-based single crystal (C8H20N)2TeCl6 was synthesized, which exhibits a yellow-orange emission centered at 600 nm with a full width at half maximum of 130 nm upon excitation under 437 nm. Intense electron-phonon coupling was confirmed in the (C8H20N)2TeCl6 single crystal and the light emitting mechanism is comprehensively discussed. The results of this study are pertinent to the emissive mechanism of Te-based hybrid halides and can facilitate discovery of unidentified metal halides with broadband excitation features.

Circuit Models of Low-Dimensional Shared Variability in Cortical Networks

Trial-to-trial variability is a reflection of the circuitry and cellular physiology that make up a neuronal network. A pervasive yet puzzling feature of cortical circuits is that despite their complex wiring, population-wide shared spiking variability is low dimensional. Previous model cortical networks cannot explain this global variability, and rather assume it is from external sources. We show that if the spatial and temporal scales of inhibitory coupling match known physiology, networks of model spiking neurons internally generate low-dimensional shared variability that captures population activity recorded in vivo. Shifting spatial attention into the receptive field of visual neurons has been shown to differentially modulate shared variability within and between brain areas. A top-down modulation of inhibitory neurons in our network provides a parsimonious mechanism for this attentional modulation. Our work provides a critical link between observed cortical circuit structure and realistic shared neuronal variability and its modulation.

Photogating in Low Dimensional Photodetectors

Low dimensional materials including quantum dots, nanowires, 2D materials, and so forth have attracted increasing research interests for electronic and optoelectronic devices in recent years. Photogating, which is usually observed in photodetectors based on low dimensional materials and their hybrid structures, is demonstrated to play an important role. Photogating is considered as a way of conductance modulation through photoinduced gate voltage instead of simply and totally attributing it to trap states. This review first focuses on the gain of photogating and reveals the distinction from conventional photoconductive effect. The trap- and hybrid-induced photogating including their origins, formations, and characteristics are subsequently discussed. Then, the recent progress on trap- and hybrid-induced photogating in low dimensional photodetectors is elaborated. Though a high gain bandwidth product as high as 109 Hz is reported in several cases, a trade-off between gain and bandwidth has to be made for this type of photogating. The general photogating is put forward according to another three reported studies very recently. General photogating may enable simultaneous high gain and high bandwidth, paving the way to explore novel high-performance photodetectors.
