Nitrogen cycling activities during decreased stratification in the coastal oxygen minimum zone off Namibia

Productive oxygen minimum zones are regions dominated by heterotrophic denitrification fueled by sinking organic matter. Microbial redox-sensitive transformations therein result in the loss and overall geochemical deficit in inorganic fixed nitrogen in the water column, thereby impacting global climate in terms of nutrient equilibrium and greenhouse gases. Here, geochemical data are combined with metagenomes, metatranscriptomes, and stable-isotope probing incubations from the water column and subseafloor of the Benguela upwelling system. The taxonomic composition of 16S rRNA genes and relative expression of functional marker genes are used to explore metabolic activities by nitrifiers and denitrifiers under decreased stratification and increased lateral ventilation in Namibian coastal waters. Active planktonic nitrifiers were affiliated with Candidatus Nitrosopumilus and Candidatus Nitrosopelagicus among Archaea, and Nitrospina, Nitrosomonas, Nitrosococcus, and Nitrospira among Bacteria. Concurrent evidence from taxonomic and functional marker genes shows that populations of Nitrososphaeria and Nitrospinota were highly active under dysoxic conditions, coupling ammonia and nitrite oxidation with respiratory nitrite reduction, but minor metabolic activity toward mixotrophic use of simple nitrogen compounds. Although active reduction of nitric oxide to nitrous oxide by Nitrospirota, Gammaproteobacteria, and Desulfobacterota was tractable in bottom waters, the produced nitrous oxide was apparently scavenged at the ocean surface by Bacteroidota. Planctomycetota involved in anaerobic ammonia oxidation were identified in dysoxic waters and their underlying sediments, but were not found to be metabolically active due to limited availability of nitrite. Consistent with water column geochemical profiles, metatranscriptomic data demonstrate that nitrifier denitrification is fueled by fixed and organic nitrogen dissolved in dysoxic waters, and prevails over canonical denitrification and anaerobic oxidation of ammonia when the Namibian coastal waters and sediment-water interface on the shelf are ventilated by lateral currents during austral winter.

Effects of Oenanthe javanica on Nitrogen Removal in Free-Water Surface Constructed Wetlands under Low-Temperature Conditions

To investigate the role and microorganism-related mechanisms of macrophytes and assess the feasibility of Oenanthe javanica (Blume) DC. in promoting nitrogen removal in free-water surface constructed wetlands (FWS-CWS) under low temperatures (<10 °C), pilot-scale FWS-CWS, planted with O. javanica, were set up and run for batch wastewater treatment in eastern China during winter. The presence of macrophytes observably improved the removal rates of ammonia nitrogen (65%-71%) and total nitrogen (41%-48%) (p < 0.05), with a sharp increase in chemical oxygen demand concentrations (about 3-4 times). Compared to the unplanted systems, the planted systems not only exhibited higher richness and diversity of microorganisms, but also significantly higher abundances of bacteria, ammonia monooxygenase gene (amoA), nitrous oxide reductase gene (nosZ), dissimilatory cd1-containing nitrite reductase gene (nirS), and dissimilatory copper-containing nitrite reductase gene (nirK) in the substrate. Meanwhile, the analysis of the microbial community composition further revealed significant differences. The results indicate that enhanced abundances of microorganisms, and the key functional genes involved with nitrogen metabolism in the planted systems played critical roles in nitrogen removal from wastewater in FWS-CWS. Furthermore, abundant carbon release from the wetland macrophytes could potentially aid nitrogen removal in FWS-CWS during winter.

The potential for nitrification and nitrate uptake in the rhizosphere of wetland plants: a modelling study

BACKGROUND AND AIMS

It has recently found that lowland rice grown hydroponically is exceptionally efficient in absorbing NO3-, raising the possibility that rice and other wetland plants growing in flooded soil may absorb significant amounts of NO3- formed by nitrification of NH4+ in the rhizosphere. This is important because (a) this NO3- is otherwise lost through denitrification in the soil bulk; and (b) plant growth and yield are generally improved when plants absorb their nitrogen as a mixture of NO3- and NH4+ compared with growth on either N source on its own. A mathematical model is developed here with which to assess the extent of NO3- absorption from the rhizosphere by wetland plants growing in flooded soil, considering the important plant and soil processes operating.

METHODS

The model considers rates of O2 transport away from an individual root and simultaneous O2 consumption in microbial and non-microbial processes; transport of NH4+ towards the root and its consumption in nitrification and uptake at the root surface; and transport of NO3- formed from NH4+ towards the root and its consumption in denitrification and uptake by the root. The sensitivity of the model's predictions to its input parameters is tested over the range of conditions in which wetland plants grow.

KEY RESULTS

The model calculations show that substantial quantities of NO3- can be produced in the rhizosphere of wetland plants through nitrification and taken up by the roots under field conditions. The rates of NO3- uptake can be comparable with those of NH4+. The model also shows that rates of denitrification and subsequent loss of N from the soil remain small even where NO3- production and uptake are considerable.

CONCLUSIONS

Nitrate uptake by wetland plants may be far more important than thought hitherto. This has implications for managing wetland soils and water, as discussed in this paper.

SELCO-Ecopurin pig slurry treatment system

As the practice of intensive animal production increases, there is a need for affordable treatment technologies that can help manage the large amounts of manure generated. Our approach has been to develop an efficient liquid-solid separation module using polymer technology and integrate this separation module into systems of treatment technologies for both the separated liquid and solids. We describe the progress that has been made in management techniques and new technological alternatives for manure treatment and generation of value added by-products based on the SELCO-Ecopurin separation technology and experiences during the last five years in 12 livestock farms in Spain, Italy and the USA. High recovery of solids (>90%) makes the use of advanced purification of the liquid a more economical alternative. The liquid can be further treated to reduce N and P and produce effluents virtually free of these nutrients. Production of methane and energy was affected by solids concentration; the anaerobic process was optimised with polymer application rate of 120 ppm during separation and a solids content of 13%.
