Modeling the Thermoelastic Bending of Ferric Oxide (Fe2O3) Nanoparticles-Enhanced RC Slabs

Nanoparticles, by virtue of their amorphous nature and high specific surface area, exhibit ideal pozzolanic activity which leads to the formation of additional C-S-H gel by reacting with calcium hydroxide, resulting in a denser matrix. The proportions of ferric oxide (Fe₂O₃), silicon dioxide (SiO₂), and aluminum oxide (Al₂O₃) in the clay, which interact chemically with the calcium oxide (CaO) during the clinkering reactions, influence the final properties of the cement and, therefore, of the concrete. Through the phases of this article, a refined trigonometric shear deformation theory (RTSDT), taking into account transverse shear deformation effects, is presented for the thermoelastic bending analysis of concrete slabs reinforced with ferric oxide (Fe₂O₃) nanoparticles. Thermoelastic properties are generated using Eshelby's model in order to determine the equivalent Young's modulus and thermal expansion of the nano-reinforced concrete slab. For an extended use of this study, the concrete plate is subjected to various mechanical and thermal loads. The governing equations of equilibrium are obtained using the principle of virtual work and solved using Navier's technique for simply supported plates. Numerical results are presented considering the effect of different variations such as volume percent of Fe₂O₃ nanoparticles, mechanical loads, thermal loads, and geometrical parameters on the thermoelastic bending of the plate. According to the results, the transverse displacement of concrete slabs subjected to mechanical loading and containing 30% nano-Fe₂O₃ was almost 45% lower than that of a slab without reinforcement, while the transverse displacement under thermal loadings increased by 10%.

Bistable Threshold Humidity Sensor Switch with Rectangular Bimorph Bending Plate

Energy-autonomous bistable threshold sensor switches have the potential to reduce costs because they do not need any electrical energy supply for monitoring physical quantities, such as relative humidity. In previous work, a bistable beam-like sensor switch with switching hysteresis was manufactured from sheet metal and a partially coated water vapor-sensitive hydrogel (poly(vinyl alcohol)/poly(acryl acid)). Based on the beam theory, a corresponding mechanical model was developed. However, bending plates should be used instead of bending beams to separate the humidity to be measured from the electrical contacts. For this reason, this work deals with the development and realization of a mechanical model based on the plate theory to describe the deflection of a silicon bimorph bending plate partially coated with hydrogel that swells with increasing humidity. For implementing a switching hysteresis a plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition silicon dioxide (SiO₂) layer is used, which was deposited and structured on top of the silicon plate. The hydrogel layer itself is patterned on the surface of the bending plate using a stamp technique. To validate the mechanical model, the switching hysteresis of the miniaturized sensor switch was measured optically by a camera measurement device.

A non-classical Mindlin plate model incorporating microstructure, surface energy and foundation effects

A non-classical model for a Mindlin plate resting on an elastic foundation is developed in a general form using a modified couple stress theory, a surface elasticity theory and a two-parameter Winkler-Pasternak foundation model. It includes all five kinematic variables possible for a Mindlin plate. The equations of motion and the complete boundary conditions are obtained simultaneously through a variational formulation based on Hamilton's principle, and the microstructure, surface energy and foundation effects are treated in a unified manner. The newly developed model contains one material length-scale parameter to describe the microstructure effect, three surface elastic constants to account for the surface energy effect, and two foundation parameters to capture the foundation effect. The current non-classical plate model reduces to its classical elasticity-based counterpart when the microstructure, surface energy and foundation effects are all suppressed. In addition, the new model includes the Mindlin plate models considering the microstructure dependence or the surface energy effect or the foundation influence alone as special cases, recovers the Kirchhoff plate model incorporating the microstructure, surface energy and foundation effects, and degenerates to the Timoshenko beam model including the microstructure effect. To illustrate the new Mindlin plate model, the static bending and free vibration problems of a simply supported rectangular plate are analytically solved by directly applying the general formulae derived.

Deflection of cross-ply composite laminates induced by piezoelectric actuators

The coupling effects between the mechanical and electric properties of piezoelectric materials have drawn significant attention for their potential applications as sensors and actuators. In this investigation, two piezoelectric actuators are symmetrically surface bonded on a cross-ply composite laminate. Electric voltages with the same amplitude and opposite sign are applied to the two symmetric piezoelectric actuators, resulting in the bending effect on the laminated plate. The bending moment is derived by using the classical laminate theory and piezoelectricity. The analytical solution of the flexural displacement of the simply supported composite plate subjected to the bending moment is solved by using the plate theory. The analytical solution is compared with the finite element solution to show the validation of present approach. The effects of the size and location of the piezoelectric actuators on the response of the composite laminate are presented through a parametric study. A simple model incorporating the classical laminate theory and plate theory is presented to predict the deformed shape of the simply supported laminate plate.
