Beamforming Using Exact Evaluation of Leakage and Ergodic Capacity of MU-MIMO System

Closed-form evaluation of key performance indicators (KPIs) of telecommunication networks help perform mathematical analysis under several network configurations. This paper deals with a recent mathematical approach of indefinite quadratic forms to propose simple albeit exact closed-form expressions of the expectation of two significant logarithmic functions. These functions formulate KPIs which include the ergodic capacity and leakage rate of multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) systems in Rayleigh fading channels. Our closed-form expressions are generic in nature and they characterize several network configurations under statistical channel state information availability. As a demonstrative example of the proposed characterization, the derived expressions are used in the statistical transmit beamformer design in a broadcast MU-MIMO system to portray promising diversity gains using standalone or joint maximization techniques of the ergodic capacity and leakage rate. The results presented are validated by Monte Carlo simulations.

Asymptotic-based bootstrap approach for matched pairs with missingness in a single arm

The issue of missing values is an arising difficulty when dealing with paired data. Several test procedures are developed in the literature to tackle this problem. Some of them are even robust under deviations and control type-I error quite accurately. However, most of these methods are not applicable when missing values are present only in a single arm. For this case, we provide asymptotic correct resampling tests that are robust under heteroskedasticity and skewed distributions. The tests are based on a meaningful restructuring of all observed information in quadratic form-type test statistics. An extensive simulation study is conducted exemplifying the tests for finite sample sizes under different missingness mechanisms. In addition, illustrative data examples based on real life studies are analyzed.

SPECIES TREE INFERENCE FROM GENOMIC SEQUENCES USING THE LOG-DET DISTANCE

The log-det distance between two aligned DNA sequences was introduced as a tool for statistically consistent inference of a gene tree under simple non-mixture models of sequence evolution. Here we prove that the log-det distance, coupled with a distance-based tree construction method, also permits consistent inference of species trees under mixture models appropriate to aligned genomic-scale sequences data. Data may include sites from many genetic loci, which evolved on different gene trees due to incomplete lineage sorting on an ultrametric species tree, with different time-reversible substitution processes. The simplicity and speed of distance-based inference suggests log-det based methods should serve as benchmarks for judging more elaborate and computationally-intensive species trees inference methods.

Factorial analyses of treatment effects under independent right-censoring

This paper introduces new effect parameters for factorial survival designs with possibly right-censored time-to-event data. In the special case of a two-sample design, it coincides with the concordance or Wilcoxon parameter in survival analysis. More generally, the new parameters describe treatment or interaction effects and we develop estimates and tests to infer their presence. We rigorously study their asymptotic properties and additionally suggest wild bootstrapping for a consistent and distribution-free application of the inference procedures. The small sample performance is discussed based on simulation results. The practical usefulness of the developed methodology is exemplified on a data example about patients with colon cancer by conducting one- and two-factorial analyses.

Confidence intervals for heritability via Haseman-Elston regression

Heritability is the proportion of phenotypic variance in a population that is attributable to individual genotypes. Heritability is considered an important measure in both evolutionary biology and in medicine, and is routinely estimated and reported in genetic epidemiology studies. In population-based genome-wide association studies (GWAS), mixed models are used to estimate variance components, from which a heritability estimate is obtained. The estimated heritability is the proportion of the model's total variance that is due to the genetic relatedness matrix (kinship measured from genotypes). Current practice is to use bootstrapping, which is slow, or normal asymptotic approximation to estimate the precision of the heritability estimate; however, this approximation fails to hold near the boundaries of the parameter space or when the sample size is small. In this paper we propose to estimate variance components via a Haseman-Elston regression, find the asymptotic distribution of the variance components and proportions of variance, and use them to construct confidence intervals (CIs). Our method is further developed to obtain unbiased variance components estimators and construct CIs by meta-analyzing information from multiple studies. We demonstrate our approach on data from the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos (HCHS/SOL).

Why GPS makes distances bigger than they are

Global navigation satellite systems such as the Global Positioning System (GPS) is one of the most important sensors for movement analysis. GPS is widely used to record the trajectories of vehicles, animals and human beings. However, all GPS movement data are affected by both measurement and interpolation errors. In this article we show that measurement error causes a systematic bias in distances recorded with a GPS; the distance between two points recorded with a GPS is - on average - bigger than the true distance between these points. This systematic 'overestimation of distance' becomes relevant if the influence of interpolation error can be neglected, which in practice is the case for movement sampled at high frequencies. We provide a mathematical explanation of this phenomenon and illustrate that it functionally depends on the autocorrelation of GPS measurement error (C). We argue that C can be interpreted as a quality measure for movement data recorded with a GPS. If there is a strong autocorrelation between any two consecutive position estimates, they have very similar error. This error cancels out when average speed, distance or direction is calculated along the trajectory. Based on our theoretical findings we introduce a novel approach to determine C in real-world GPS movement data sampled at high frequencies. We apply our approach to pedestrian trajectories and car trajectories. We found that the measurement error in the data was strongly spatially and temporally autocorrelated and give a quality estimate of the data. Most importantly, our findings are not limited to GPS alone. The systematic bias and its implications are bound to occur in any movement data collected with absolute positioning if interpolation error can be neglected.

Methods for calculating confidence and credible intervals for the residual between-study variance in random effects meta-regression models

BACKGROUND

Meta-regression is becoming increasingly used to model study level covariate effects. However this type of statistical analysis presents many difficulties and challenges. Here two methods for calculating confidence intervals for the magnitude of the residual between-study variance in random effects meta-regression models are developed. A further suggestion for calculating credible intervals using informative prior distributions for the residual between-study variance is presented.

METHODS

Two recently proposed and, under the assumptions of the random effects model, exact methods for constructing confidence intervals for the between-study variance in random effects meta-analyses are extended to the meta-regression setting. The use of Generalised Cochran heterogeneity statistics is extended to the meta-regression setting and a Newton-Raphson procedure is developed to implement the Q profile method for meta-analysis and meta-regression. WinBUGS is used to implement informative priors for the residual between-study variance in the context of Bayesian meta-regressions.

RESULTS

Results are obtained for two contrasting examples, where the first example involves a binary covariate and the second involves a continuous covariate. Intervals for the residual between-study variance are wide for both examples.

CONCLUSIONS

Statistical methods, and R computer software, are available to compute exact confidence intervals for the residual between-study variance under the random effects model for meta-regression. These frequentist methods are almost as easily implemented as their established counterparts for meta-analysis. Bayesian meta-regressions are also easily performed by analysts who are comfortable using WinBUGS. Estimates of the residual between-study variance in random effects meta-regressions should be routinely reported and accompanied by some measure of their uncertainty. Confidence and/or credible intervals are well-suited to this purpose.

EXACT DISTRIBUTIONS OF INTRACLASS CORRELATION AND CRONBACH'S ALPHA WITH GAUSSIAN DATA AND GENERAL COVARIANCE

Intraclass correlation and Cronbach's alpha are widely used to describe reliability of tests and measurements. Even with Gaussian data, exact distributions are known only for compound symmetric covariance (equal variances and equal correlations). Recently, large sample Gaussian approximations were derived for the distribution functions. New exact results allow calculating the exact distribution function and other properties of intraclass correlation and Cronbach's alpha, for Gaussian data with any covariance pattern, not just compound symmetry. Probabilities are computed in terms of the distribution function of a weighted sum of independent chi-square random variables. New F approximations for the distribution functions of intraclass correlation and Cronbach's alpha are much simpler and faster to compute than the exact forms. Assuming the covariance matrix is known, the approximations typically provide sufficient accuracy, even with as few as ten observations. Either the exact or approximate distributions may be used to create confidence intervals around an estimate of reliability. Monte Carlo simulations led to a number of conclusions. Correctly assuming that the covariance matrix is compound symmetric leads to accurate confidence intervals, as was expected from previously known results. However, assuming and estimating a general covariance matrix produces somewhat optimistically narrow confidence intervals with 10 observations. Increasing sample size to 100 gives essentially unbiased coverage. Incorrectly assuming compound symmetry leads to pessimistically large confidence intervals, with pessimism increasing with sample size. In contrast, incorrectly assuming general covariance introduces only a modest optimistic bias in small samples. Hence the new methods seem preferable for creating confidence intervals, except when compound symmetry definitely holds.
