Capturing Behavior in Small Doses: A Review of Comparative Research in Evaluating Thin Slices for Behavioral Measurement

Thin slices are used across a wide array of research domains to observe, measure, and predict human behavior. This article reviews the thin-slice method as a measurement technique and summarizes current comparative thin-slice research regarding the reliability and validity of thin slices to represent behavior or social constructs. We outline decision factors in using thin-slice behavioral coding and detail three avenues of thin-slice comparative research: (1) assessing whether thin slices can adequately approximate the total of the recorded behavior or be interchangeable with each other (representativeness); (2) assessing how well thin slices can predict variables that are different from the behavior measured in the slice (predictive validity), and (3) assessing how interpersonal judgment accuracy can depend on the length of the slice (accuracy-length validity). The aim of the review is to provide information researchers may use when designing and evaluating thin-slice behavioral measurement.

Thin slice derived personality types predict longitudinal symptom trajectories

Resilient, undercontrolled, and overcontrolled personality types have been identified across the life span and are associated with psychiatric symptoms and functioning. However, it is unknown whether these types are identifiable in preschool-aged children using observational indices or whether they predict longitudinal outcomes. The current study used observationally coded five-factor model (FFM) traits in a sample of preschoolers to identify whether personality traits cluster into types, whether types predict psychiatric symptoms and impairment across development, and whether types better predict outcomes than trait dimensions. Using a validated "thin slice" approach, preschool personality was observationally coded in a clinically enriched sample oversampled for depression (N = 299). Latent class analysis tested how FFM dimensions organized into types, identifying resilient, undercontrolled, and overcontrolled preschoolers. Types demonstrated baseline diagnostic differences and multilevel models indicated above baseline diagnoses, undercontrolled children exhibited elevated externalizing symptoms and worse functioning across development, whereas overcontrolled and resilient children did not differ. Personality types and dimensions both provided similar predictive utility. Resilient, undercontrolled, and overcontrolled personality types are identifiable using FFM observational coding in clinically heterogeneous preschoolers and undercontrolled children demonstrated the most severe trajectories. Findings highlight that personality types are detectable at early ages and have unique predictive power for psychiatric outcomes across development compared with dimensions. The Buffering Effect of Health Care Provider Video Biographies When Viewed in Combination With Negative Reviews: "You Can't Fake Nice"

Background

Patients seek information from numerous sources before choosing a primary care provider; two of the most popular sources are providers’ own online biographies and patient rating websites. However, prior research has generally only examined how these sources influence patients’ decisions in isolation.

Objective

This study aimed to determine how primary care providers’ online biographies and online patient ratings interact to affect patients’ decision making, especially in the face of negative reviews.

Methods

An 8-condition online experiment (n=866) was conducted, manipulating patient ratings and the timing of viewing a provider’s online biographical video (pre- or postrating viewing).

Results

When participants were shown a short video introduction of a provider after reading predominantly negative reviews a positive expectancy violation occurred, which was also related to more positive perceptions of the provider. When exposed to all negative reviews, 43% of participants indicated they would still choose to make an appointment with the provider, with many indicating that the video provided the evidence needed to help make up their own minds.

Conclusions

These findings are especially relevant to health care organizations seeking to combat a recent rise in fake patient reviews. Providing patients with realistic expectations of the care that clinicians can offer via their own online biographical videos can help counteract negative patient comments online.

Thin-slice brain CT with iterative model reconstruction algorithm for small lacunar lesions detection: Image quality and diagnostic accuracy evaluation

This study was aimed to evaluate the image quality and lacunar lesion detection of thin-slice brain computed tomography (CT) images with different reconstruction algorithms, including filtered back projection (FBP), hybrid iterative reconstruction (HIR), and iterative model reconstruction (IMR) by comparison of routine slice images with FBP reconstruction. Sixty-one patients underwent noncontrast brain CT and images were reconstructed with a routine slice of 5.0 mm by FBP and thin slice of 1.0 mm by IMR, HIR, and FBP algorithms, respectively. Objective analyses included CT attenuation, noise, artifacts index of posterior cranial fossa, and contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR). Subjective analyses were performed according to overall image quality using a 5-point scale [1 (unacceptable) to 5 (excellent)]. In addition, lacunar lesion detection was compared in images with different reconstruction settings among 26 patients with lacunar lesions, with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as reference.Thin-slice IMR images enabled the lowest noise, artifacts index, and the best CNR. Both IMR and HIR thin-slice images enabled better scores in subjective image quality than routine slice FBP images. Moreover, both thin-slice IMR and HIR images enabled higher sensitivity and positive predictive value (PPV) in lesion detection of 35-mm lacunar lesions compared with routine slice FBP images.Thin-slice IMR images improve image quality, meanwhile yield better detection of small lacunar lesions in brain CT compared with routine slice FBP images.

Diffusion effects on longitudinal relaxation in poorly mixed compartments

Diffusion of spins between physical or virtual, communicating compartments having different states of longitudinal magnetization leads to diffusion-driven longitudinal relaxation. Herein, in two model systems, the effects of diffusion-driven longitudinal relaxation are explored experimentally and analyzed quantitatively. In the first case, longitudinal relaxation in a single slice of a water phantom is monitored spectroscopically as a function of slice thickness. In the second case, mimicking vascular flow/diffusion effects, longitudinal relaxation is monitored in a two-compartment, semi-permeable fiber phantom. In both cases, apparent longitudinal relaxation, though clearly multi-exponential, is well-modeled as bi-exponential.
