Method to Solve Underwater Laser Weak Waves and Superimposed Waves

With the rapid development of Lidar technology, the use of Lidar for underwater terrain detection has become feasible. There is still a challenge in the process of signal resolution: the underwater laser echo signal is different to propagating in the air, and it is easy to produce weak waves and superimposed waves. However, existing waveform decomposition methods are not effective in processing these waveform signals, and the underwater waveform signal cannot be correctly decomposed, resulting in subsequent data-processing errors. To address these issues, this study used a drone equipped with a 532 nm laser to detect a pond as the study background. This paper proposes an improved inflection point selection decomposition method to estimate the parameter. By comparing it with other decomposition methods, we found that the RMSE is 2.544 and R² is 0.995975, which is more stable and accurate. After estimating the parameters, this study used oscillating particle swarm optimization (OPSO) and the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm (LM) to optimize the estimated parameters; the final results show that the method in this paper is closer to the original waveform. In order to verify the processing effect of the method on complex waveform, this paper decomposes and optimizes the simulated complex waveforms; the final RMSE is 0.0016, R² is 1, and the Gaussian component after decomposition can fully represent the original waveform. This method is better than other decomposition methods in complex waveform decomposition, especially regarding weak waves and superimposed waves.

Simultaneous Localization and Guidance of Two Underwater Hexapod Robots under Underwater Currents

This paper addresses the simultaneous localization and guidance of two underwater hexapod robots under sea currents. This paper considers an underwater environment where there are no landmarks or features which can assist a robot's localization. This article uses two underwater hexapod robots that move together while using each other as landmarks in the environment. While one robot moves, another robot extends its legs into the seabed and acts as a static landmark. A moving robot measures the relative position of another static robot, in order to estimate its position while it moves. Due to underwater currents, a robot cannot maintain its desired course. Moreover, there may be obstacles, such as underwater nets, that a robot needs to avoid. We thus develop a guidance strategy for avoiding obstacles, while estimating the perturbation due to the sea currents. As far as we know, this paper is novel in tackling simultaneous localization and guidance of underwater hexapod robots in environments with various obstacles. MATLAB simulations demonstrate that the proposed methods are effective in harsh environments where the sea current magnitude can change irregularly.

Review of Underwater Sensing Technologies and Applications

As the ocean development process speeds up, the technical means of ocean exploration are being upgraded. Due to the characteristics of seawater and the complex underwater environment, conventional measurement and sensing methods used for land are difficult to apply in the underwater environment directly. Especially for the seabed topography, it is impossible to carry out long-distance and accurate detection via electromagnetic waves. Therefore, various types of acoustic and even optical sensing devices for underwater applications have come into use. Equipped by submersibles, those underwater sensors can sense underwater wide-range and accurately. Moreover, the development of sensor technology will be modified and optimized according to the needs of ocean exploitation. This paper has made a summary of the ocean sensing technologies applied in some critical underwater scenarios, including geological surveys, navigation and communication, marine environmental parameters, and underwater inspections. In order to contain as many submersible-based sensors as possible, we have to make a trade-off on breadth and depth. In the end, the authors predict the development trend of underwater sensor technology based on the future ocean exploration requirements.

A Mirror-Based Active Vision System for Underwater Robots: From the Design to Active Object Tracking Application

A mirror-based active system capable of changing the view’s direction of a pre-existing fixed camera is presented. The aim of this research work is to extend the perceptual tracking capabilities of an underwater robot without altering its structure. The ability to control the view’s direction allows the robot to explore its entire surroundings without any actual displacement, which can be useful for more effective motion planning and for different navigation strategies, such as object tracking and/or obstacle evasion, which are of great importance for natural preservation in environments as complex and fragile as coral reefs. Active vision systems based on mirrors had been used mainly in terrestrial platforms to capture the motion of fast projectiles using high-speed cameras of considerable size and weight, but they had not been used on underwater platforms. In this sense, our approach incorporates a lightweight design adapted to an underwater robot using affordable and easy-access technology (i.e., 3D printing). Our active system consists of two arranged mirrors, one of which remains static in front of the robot’s camera, while the orientation of the second mirror is controlled by two servomotors. Object tracking is performed by using only the pixels contained on the homography of a defined area in the active mirror. HSV color space is used to reduce lighting change effects. Since color and geometry information of the tracking object are previously known, a window filter is applied over the H-channel for color blobs detection, then, noise is filtered and the object’s centroid is estimated. If the object is lost, a Kalman filter is applied to predict its position. Finally, with this information, an image PD controller computes the servomotor articular values. We have carried out experiments in real environments, testing our active vision system in an object-tracking application where an artificial object is manually displaced on the periphery of the robot and the mirror system is automatically reconfigured to keep such object focused by the camera, having satisfactory results in real time for detecting objects of low complexity and in poor lighting conditions.

Design and Construction of an ROV for Underwater Exploration

The design of a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) with a size of 18.41 cm × 29.50 cm × 33.50 cm, and a weight of 15.64 kg, is introduced herein. The main goal is to capture underwater video by remote control communication in real time via Ethernet protocol. The ROV moves under the six brushless motors governed through a smart PID controller (Proportional + Integral + Derivative) and by using pulse-wide modulation with short pulses of 1 μs to improve the stability of the position in relation to the translational, ascent or descent, and rotational movements on three axes to capture images of 800 × 640 pixels on a video graphic array standard. The motion control, 3D position, temperature sensing, and video capture are performed at the same time, exploiting the four cores of the Raspberry Pi 3, using the threading library for parallel computing. In such a way, experimental results show that the video capture stage can process up to 42 frames per second on a Raspberry Pi 3. The remote control of the ROV is executed under a graphical user interface developed in Python, which is suitable for different operating systems, such as GNU/Linux, Windows, Android, and OS X. The proposed ROV can reach up to 100 m underwater, thus solving the issue of divers who can only reach 30 m depth. In addition, the proposed ROV can be useful in underwater applications such as surveillance, operations, maintenance, and measurement.
