Post-coronary artery bypass surgery pericardial abscess: Salmonella paratyphi B

Endemic enteric fever is one of the major health problems in South Asia where focal pyogenic infections with salmonella are being increasingly reported. A pericardial abscess following coronary artery bypass surgery with Salmonella paratyphi B was successfully treated, the first reported case so far.

Sepsis and multiple brain abscesses caused by Salmonella paratyphi B in an infant: successful treatment with sulbactam-ampicillin and surgical drainage

Abscess formation by Salmonella species is an uncommon but significant manifestation of salmonellosis, because this type of infection has high morbidity and mortality rates and is a potential nosocomial hazard. In infants, history of consumption of contaminated water should be especially quired. We report a case who had sepsis and multiple brain abscesses due to Salmonella paratyphi B and who responded to sulbactam-ampicillin (SAM) therapy. Sulbactam-ampicillin combination may be preferable due to its immunomodulator effect.

[Salmonella C infection of aortic abdominal aneurysm]

The infected aneurysms of the aorta represent the 0.65% of all the aneurysms and they are associated with high morbidity and mortality. The vascular infections from Salmonella are not particularly frequent, even if in the last years their reports are more numerous. The authors report their experience in the surgical treatment of one case of aneurysm of the abdominal aorta infected by group C Salmonella, making a review of the Literature on this matter.

Partial splenectomy for benign cystic lesions of the spleen

Cystic lesions of the spleen are uncommon, about 600 cases being reported in the world literature. This report concerns three pediatric patients treated by partial splenectomy for benign cyst. In the world literature most of the cystic lesions of the spleen are treated by splenectomy and more recently by partial splenectomy. The infected lesions are treated by splenectomy or by incision and drainage only. Partial splenectomy has evident advantage over splenectomy. Although in the world literature we have not found a single case of infected splenic benign cyst treated by partial splenectomy, we believe that this procedure also has an advantage over drainage as the infected and necrotic part of the cyst is removed, thereby reducing morbidity and further possible complications.
