Growth and development of young game pheasants (<i>Phasianus colchicus</i>)

Abstract. Fifty game pheasants were kept to 8 weeks in confinement housing and later maintained outdoors in a partially roofed aviary. Pheasants received commercial feed mixtures ad libitum. Body weight and dimensions were determined every 4 weeks. Ten pheasants were selected for slaughter at the end of 18 and 20 weeks each. After slaughter, their heads, shanks, feathers, blood, inedible viscera and major internal organs were weighed and digestive tract separated and measured. The carcasses were dissected. Higher body weights and daily gains were found in males than in females on all test days during rearing to 20 weeks of age. Compared to females, males had significantly longer keel from 4 weeks, longer lower thighs and shanks from 8 weeks, and longer trunk with and without neck and greater chest circumference from 12 weeks of age. Older pheasants had a significantly lower proportion of feathers and blood, and higher content of inedible viscera, with significantly relatively shorter (cm 100 g b.w.−1) small intestine, caecum and rectum in males than in females. With advancing age, there was a decrease in the proportion of gizzard (significant) and liver, and in males a significant increase in the proportion of testicles.

The sensitivity ofEscherichia coli strains with K1 surface antigen and rods without this antigen to the bactericidal effect of serum

The susceptibility of Escherichia coli strains with K1 surface antigen (K1+) and rods without this antigen (K1-) to the bactericidal action of normal bovine serum and human normal cord serum was determined. Seventy E. coli strains (35 K1+ and 35 K1-) were isolated from urine obtained from children with urinary tract infections. The strains investigated showed variable sensitivity to the bactericidal action of the sera. E. coli K1+ strains were characterized by lower sensitivity to bactericidal effect of the sera in comparison with K1- rods. The role of the particular mechanisms of complement activation in the process of killing of the E. coli strains was also determined.

The mechanisms of activation of normal human serum complement byEscherichia coli strains with K1 surface antigen

Ten E. coli K1 strains isolated from the urine of children with urinary tract infections were sensitive to the bactericidal action of normal human serum (NHS). The role of the particular mechanisms of complement activation was determined in the process of killing these strains, showing variable sensitivity to the bactericidal action of NHS; three mechanisms of activation of human complement were observed. Important role of alternative pathway activation in the bactericidal action of NHS against E. coli K1 strains independent of the classical and lectin pathways was not established.

Centrally administered galanin modifies vasopressin and oxytocin release from the hypothalamo-neurohypophysial system of euhydrated and dehydrated rats

Galanin (Gal) as a neuropeptide with widespread distribution in the central nervous system may be involved in the mechanisms of vasopressin (AVP) and oxytocin (OT) release from the hypothalamo-neurohypophysial system. Vasopressin and oxytocin content in the hypothalamus and neurohypophysis as well as plasma level of both neurohormones were studied after galanin treatment in euhydrated and dehydrated rats. In not dehydrated rats intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) injections of Gal did not affect the hypothalamic and neurohypophysial OT content, however, distinctly increased plasma OT concentration. In the same animals Gal diminished the hypothalamic AVP content but was without the effect on neurohypophysial AVP storage; plasma AVP level then raised. Galanin, administered i.c.v. to rats deprived of water, distinctly inhibited AVP and OT release from the hypothalamo-neurohypophysial system. Simultaneously, plasma AVP and OT level was significantly diminished after Gal treatment in dehydrated rats. These results suggest that modulatory effect of galanin on vasopressin and oxytocin release depends on the actual state of water metabolism. Gal acts as an inhibitory neuromodulator of AVP and OT secretion under conditions of the dehydration but stimulates this process in the state of equilibrated water metabolism.

Galanin affects vasopressin and oxytocin release from the hypothalamo-neurohypophysial system in haemorrahaged rats

The effect of centrally administered galanin (Gal; 100 pM i.c.v.) on the hypothalamo-neurohypophysial storage as well as blood plasma level of vasopressin and oxytocin was estimated in haemorrhaged (1 ml per 100 g b.w.) male Wistar rats. Gal i.c.v. treatment did not alter vasopressin and oxytocin content both in the hypothalamus and neurohypophysis as well as their concentration in blood plasma of not haemorrhaged rats. Haemorrhage decreased the hypothalamic and neurohypophysial vasopressin and oxytocin storage but increased the neurohormones plasma level in animals injected with vehicle solution. During the haemorrhage, the increase in plasma vasopressin and oxytocin was inhibited in rats previously treated i.c.v. with galanin. The hypothalamic and neurohypophysial vasopressin as well as oxytocin content significantly increased in animals treated with galanin and subsequently haemorrhaged. These results suggest that galanin may have a regulatory role in the hypothalamo-neurohypophysial function especially under condition of hypovolemia.

Synergistic bactericidal effect of cephalexin and normal cord serum (NCS) against Escherichia coli K1 strains isolated from children with urinary tract infections (UTI)

Investigations were performed on the bactericidal activity of cephalexin (keflex) and normal cord serum (NCS) against Escherichia coli K1 strains isolated from UTI. A synergistic interaction of the antibiotic and NCS was found against the strains resistant and sensitive to the serum.

The susceptibility of gram-negative rods and their adaptive forms resistant to colistine to the bactericidal action of sera

The susceptibility of Escherichia coli K1, Salmonella enteritidis, Salmonella typhimurium strains and their adaptative forms resistant to colistine (Colr forms) was compared with respect to their sensitivity to the bactericidal action of normal cord serum and normal bovine serum. It has been shown that the Colr forms are more susceptible to sera as compared to initial strains. The increase of sensitivity of the Colr forms is connected with structural changes within bacterial cell wall which is the target for complement as well as for colistine.

[Hydrophobic properties of Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains]

Hydrophobic properties are considered as a factor enhancing the adhesion of bacteria to tissue cells. The strains of P. aeruginosa isolated from patients with urinary tract infections (UTI), from feces and soil were investigated. It shows that over 50% strains isolated from UTI had hydrophobic cell surface. Most of all strain investigated (67.9%) is characterized by hydrophobicity what probably favours their pathogenicity.

Influence of ozone on the susceptibility of Escherichia coli K1 to the bactericidal action of serum

The susceptibility to the bactericidal action of normal bovine serum of twenty two Escherichia coli K1 strains, isolated from the urine of patients with urinary tract infections, was determined. Only four strains were resistant. Ozonization of bacterial suspensions enhanced the sensitivity of the strains to the action of both normal serum and a serum in which the alternative pathway of complement activation was thermally blocked.

The sensitivity of Hafnia alvei strains to the bactericidal effect of serum

Most Hafnia alvei strains are sensitive to the bactericidal action of normal bovine serum (NBS) as well as to a serum in which the alternative pathway of complement activation has been thermally blocked. Introduction of polysaccharides (PS) to NBS lowers the bactericidal effect. In a serum in which the alternative pathway of complement activation is blocked, PS completely cancels the bacterial effect.
