Therapeutic perspectives of epigenetically active nutrients

Many nutrients are known for a wide range of activities in prevention and alleviation of various diseases. Recently, their potential role in regulating human health through effects on epigenetics has become evident, although specific mechanisms are still unclear. Thus, nutriepigenetics/nutriepigenomics has emerged as a new and promising field in current epigenetics research in the past few years. In particular, polyphenols, as part of the central dynamic interaction between the genome and the environment with specificity at physiological concentrations, are well known to affect mechanisms underlying human health. This review summarizes the effects of dietary compounds on epigenetic mechanisms in the regulation of gene expression including expression of enzymes and other molecules responsible for drug absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion in cancer, metabolic syndrome, neurodegenerative disorders and hormonal dysfunction.

Measurement of the D*(2010)+ meson width and the D*(2010)+ - D0 mass difference

We measure the mass difference Δm0 between the D*(2010)+ and the D0 and the natural linewidth Γ of the transition D*(2010)+ → D0π+. The data were recorded with the BABAR detector at center-of-mass energies at and near the Υ(4S) resonance, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of approximately 477  fb(-1). The D0 is reconstructed in the decay modes D0 → K- π+ and D0 → K- π+ π- π+. For the decay mode D0 → K- π+ we obtain Γ = (83.4±1.7±1.5)  keV and Δm0 = (145425.6±0.6±1.7)  keV, [corrected] where the quoted errors are statistical and systematic, respectively. For the D0 → K- π+ π- π+ mode we obtain Γ = (83.2±1.5±2.6)  keV and Δm0 = (145426.6±0.5±1.9)  keV. [corrected] The combined measurements yield Γ = (83.3±1.2±1.4)  keV and Δm0 = (145425.9±0.4±1.7)  keV; the width is a factor of approximately 12 times more precise than the previous value, while the mass difference is a factor of approximately 6 times more precise.

Search for CP violation in B0-B0 mixing using partial reconstruction of B0→D*- Xℓ+ νℓ and a kaon tag

We present results of a search for CP violation in B0- B0 mixing with the BABAR detector. We select a sample of B0→D*- Xℓ+ ν decays with a partial reconstruction method and use kaon tagging to assess the flavor of the other B meson in the event. We determine the CP violating asymmetry ACP≡[N(B0B0)-N(B0B0)]/[N(B0B0)+N(B0B0)]=(0.06±0.17(-0.32)(+0.38))%, corresponding to ΔCP=1-|q/p|=(0.29±0.84(-1.61)(+1.88))×10(-3).

Observation of time-reversal violation in the B0 meson system

Although CP violation in the B meson system has been well established by the B factories, there has been no direct observation of time-reversal violation. The decays of entangled neutral B mesons into definite flavor states (B(0) or B(0)), and J/ψK(L)(0) or ccK(S)(0) final states (referred to as B(+) or B(-)), allow comparisons between the probabilities of four pairs of T-conjugated transitions, for example, B(0) → B(-) and B(-) → B(0), as a function of the time difference between the two B decays. Using 468 × 10(6) BB pairs produced in Υ(4S) decays collected by the BABAR detector at SLAC, we measure T-violating parameters in the time evolution of neutral B mesons, yielding ΔS(T)(+) = -1.37 ± 0.14(stat) ± 0.06(syst) and ΔS(T)(-) = 1.17 ± 0.18(stat) ± 0.11(syst). These nonzero results represent the first direct observation of T violation through the exchange of initial and final states in transitions that can only be connected by a T-symmetry transformation.

Precision measurement of the B → Xs γ photon energy spectrum, branching fraction, and direct CP asymmetry A(CP)((B → X(s+d)γ)

The photon spectrum in the inclusive electromagnetic radiative decays of the B meson, B → X(s)γ plus B → X(d)γ, is studied using a data sample of (382.8 ± 4.2) × 10(6)Υ(4S) → BB decays collected by the BABAR experiment at SLAC. The spectrum is used to extract the branching fraction B(B → X(s)γ) = (3.21 ± 0.33) × 10(-4) for E(γ) >1.8 GeV and the direct CP asymmetry A(CP) (B → X(s+d)γ) = 0.057 ± 0.063. The effects of detector resolution and Doppler smearing are unfolded to measure the photon energy spectrum in the B meson rest frame.

Evidence for an excess of B→D*τ(-)ν(τ) decays

Based on the full BABAR data sample, we report improved measurements of the ratios R(D(*))=B(B[over ¯]→D(*)τ(-)ν[over ¯](τ))/B(B[over ¯]→D(*)ℓ(ℓ)(-)ν[over ¯](ℓ)), where ℓ is either e or μ. These ratios are sensitive to new physics contributions in the form of a charged Higgs boson. We measure R(D)=0.440±0.058±0.042 and R(D(*))=0.332±0.024±0.018, which exceed the standard model expectations by 2.0σ and 2.7σ, respectively. Taken together, our results disagree with these expectations at the 3.4σ level. This excess cannot be explained by a charged Higgs boson in the type II two-Higgs-doublet model.

Search for low-mass dark-sector Higgs bosons

Recent astrophysical and terrestrial experiments have motivated the proposal of a dark sector with GeV-scale gauge boson force carriers and new Higgs bosons. We present a search for a dark Higgs boson using 516 fb(-1) of data collected with the BABAR detector. We do not observe a significant signal and we set 90% confidence level upper limits on the product of the standard model-dark-sector mixing angle and the dark-sector coupling constant.

Search for hadronic decays of a light Higgs boson in the radiative decay Υ→γA0

We search for hadronic decays of a light Higgs boson (A(0)) produced in radiative decays of an Υ(2S) or Υ(3S) meson, Υ→γA(0). The data have been recorded by the BABAR experiment at the Υ(3S) and Υ(2S) center-of-mass energies and include (121.3±1.2)×10(6) Υ(3S) and (98.3±0.9)×10(6) Υ(2S) mesons. No significant signal is observed. We set 90% confidence level upper limits on the product branching fractions B(Υ(nS)→γA(0))B(A(0)→hadrons) (n=2 or 3) that range from 1×10(-6) for an A(0) mass of 0.3 GeV/c(2) to 8×10(-5) at 7 GeV/c(2).

Observation of the decay B- → D(s)((*)+) K- ℓ- ν(ℓ)

We report the observation of the decay B- → D(s)((*)+) K- ℓ- ν(ℓ) based on 342  fb(-1) of data collected at the Υ(4S) resonance with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II e+ e- storage rings at SLAC. A simultaneous fit to three D(s)(+) decay chains is performed to extract the signal yield from measurements of the squared missing mass in the B meson decay. We observe the decay B- → D(s)((*)+) K- ℓ- ν(ℓ) with a significance greater than 5 standard deviations (including systematic uncertainties) and measure its branching fraction to be B(B- → D(s)((*)+) K- ℓ- ν(ℓ)) = [6.13(-1.03)(+1.04)(stat)±0.43(syst)±0.51(B(D(s)))]×10(-4), where the last error reflects the limited knowledge of the D(s) branching fractions.

Pituitary carcinoma

The presence of distant metastases may be asymptomatic in patients who present with symptoms and signs due to the local mass effects of an invasive pituitary adenoma. A case of pituitary carcinoma in a 54-year-old man who presented with widespread asymptomatic distant metastases 12 years after initial diagnosis is reviewed. The long course and asymptomatic metastases suggested a relatively slow-growing malignancy. The factors that played a role in the pathogenesis of the metastasis are unknown. A review of the literature on pituitary carcinoma suggests that accurate diagnosis and a multidisciplinary approach to management of such lesions emphasizing surgery, radiotherapy, and hormonal manipulation may provide these patients with the longest and best quality of survival.

Search for production of invisible final states in single-photon decays of Υ(1S)

We search for single-photon decays of the Υ(1S) resonance, Υ → γ + invisible, where the invisible state is either a particle of definite mass, such as a light Higgs boson A⁰, or a pair of dark matter particles, χχ. Both A⁰ and χ are assumed to have zero spin. We tag Υ(1S) decays with a dipion transition Υ(2S) → π⁺π⁻Υ(1S) and look for events with a single energetic photon and significant missing energy. We find no evidence for such processes in the mass range m(A⁰) ≤ 9.2 GeV and m(χ) ≤ 4.5 GeV in the sample of 98 × 10⁶ Υ(2S) decays collected with the BABAR detector and set stringent limits on new physics models that contain light dark matter states.

Search for f(J)(2220) in radiative J/ψ decays

We present a search for f(J)(2220) production in radiative J/ψ→γf(J)(2220) decays using 460  fb⁻¹ of data collected with the BABAR detector at the SLAC PEP-II e(+)e⁻ collider. The f(J)(2220) is searched for in the decays to K(+)K⁻ and K(S)⁰K(S)⁰. No evidence of this resonance is observed, and 90% confidence level upper limits on the product of the branching fractions for J/ψ→γf(J)(2220) and f(J)(2220)→K(+)K⁻(K(S)⁰K(S)⁰) as a function of spin and helicity are set at the level of 10⁻⁵, below the central values reported by the Mark III experiment.

Evidence for direct CP violation in the measurement of the Cabbibo-Kobayashi-Maskawa angle γ with B∓ → D(*)K(*)∓ decays

We report the measurement of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa CP-violating angle γ through a Dalitz plot analysis of neutral D-meson decays to K(S)(0) π+ π- and K(S)(0) K+ K- produced in the processes B∓ → DK∓, B∓ D* K∓ with D* → Dπ(0), Dγ, and B∓ → DK*∓ with K*∓ → K(S)(0) π∓, using 468 million BB pairs collected by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e+ e- collider at SLAC. We measure γ = (68 ± 14 ± 4 ± 3)° (modulo 180°), where the first error is statistical, the second is the experimental systematic uncertainty, and the third reflects the uncertainty in the description of the neutral D decay amplitudes. This result is inconsistent with γ = 0 (no direct CP violation) with a significance of 3.5 standard deviations.

Measurement of D0-D0 mixing parameters using D0 → K(S)(0)π+ π- and D0 → K(S)(0)K+ K- decays

We report a direct measurement of D0-D0 mixing parameters through a time-dependent amplitude analysis of the Dalitz plots of D(0) → K(S)(0) π+ π- and, for the first time, D0 → K(S)(0)K+ K- decays. The low-momentum pion π(s)(+) in the decay D*+ → D0 π(s)(+) identifies the flavor of the neutral D meson at its production. Using 468.5 fb(-1) of e+ e- colliding-beam data recorded near square root(s)=10.6 GeV by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy collider at SLAC, we measure the mixing parameters x = [1.6 ± 2.3(stat) ± 1.2(syst) ± 0.8(model)] × 10(-3), and y = [5.7 ± 2.0(stat) ± 1.3(syst) ± 0.7(model)] × 10(-3). These results provide the best measurement to date of x and y. The knowledge of the value of x, in particular, is crucial for understanding the origin of mixing.

Measurements of charged current lepton universality and |Vus| using tau lepton decays to e- ν(e) ν(τ), μ- ν(μ) ν(τ), π- ν(τ), and K- ν(τ)

Using 467  fb(-1) of e+e- annihilation data collected with the BABAR detector, we measure (B(τ- → μ- ν(μ) ν(τ)))/(B(τ- → e- ν(e) ν(τ))) =(0.9796±0.0016±0.0036), (B(τ- → π- ν(τ)))/(B(τ- → e- ν(e) ν(τ))) = (0.5945±0.0014±0.0061), and (B(τ- → K- ν(τ)))/(B(τ- → e- ν(e) ν(τ))) = (0.03882±0.00032±0.00057), where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. From these precision τ measurements, we test the standard model assumption of μ-e and τ-μ charge current lepton universality and provide determinations of |Vus| experimentally independent of the decay of a kaon.

Test of lepton universality in Υ(1S) decays at BABAR

The ratio R(τμ)(Υ(1S))=Γ(Υ(1S)→τ+ τ-)/Γ(Υ(1S)→μ+ μ-) is measured using a sample of (121.8±1.2)×10(6)Υ(3S) events recorded by the BABAR detector. This measurement is intended as a test of lepton universality and as a search for a possible light pseudoscalar Higgs boson. In the standard model (SM) this ratio is expected to be close to 1. Any significant deviations would violate lepton universality and could be introduced by the coupling to a light pseudoscalar Higgs boson. The analysis studies the decays Υ(3S)→Υ(1S)π+ π-, Υ(1S)→l+ l-, where l=μ, τ. The result, R(τμ)(Υ(1S))=1.005±0.013(stat)±0.022(syst), shows no deviation from the expected SM value, while improving the precision with respect to previous measurements.

Search for charged lepton flavor violation in narrow upsilon decays

Charged-lepton flavor-violating processes are unobservable in the standard model, but they are predicted to be enhanced in several extensions to the standard model, including supersymmetry and models with leptoquarks or compositeness. We present a search for such processes in a sample of 99x10(6)Upsilon(2S) decays and 117x10(6)Upsilon(3S) decays collected with the BABAR detector. We place upper limits on the branching fractions B(Upsilon(nS)-->e(+/-)tau(-/+)) and B(Upsilon(nS)-->mu(+/-)tau(-/+)) (n=2,3) at the 10(-6) level and use these results to place lower limits of order 1 TeV on the mass scale of charged-lepton flavor-violating effective operators.

Searches for Lepton flavor violation in the decays tau{+/-}-->e{+/-}gamma and tau{+/-}-->mu{+/-}gamma

Searches for lepton-flavor-violating decays of a tau lepton to a lighter mass lepton and a photon have been performed with the entire data set of (963+/-7)x10{6} tau decays collected by the BABAR detector near the Upsilon(4S), Upsilon(3S) and Upsilon(2S) resonances. The searches yield no evidence of signals and we set upper limits on the branching fractions of B(tau{+/-}-->e{+/-}gamma)<3.3x10{-8} and B(tau{+/-}-->mu{+/-}gamma)<4.4x10{-8} at 90% confidence level.

Measurement of |V(cb)| and the form-factor slope in B --> Dl- nu(l) decays in events tagged by a fully reconstructed B meson

We present a measurement of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element |V(cb)| and the form-factor slope rho2 in B --> Dl- nu(l) decays based on 460x10(6) BB events recorded at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the BABAR detector. B --> Dl- nu(l) decays are selected in events in which a hadronic decay of the second B meson is fully reconstructed. We measure B(B- --> D0 l- nu(l))/B(B- --> Xl- nu(l)) = (0.255+/-0.009+/-0.009) and B(B0 --> D+ l- nu(l))/B(B0 --> Xl- nu(l)) = (0.230+/-0.011+/-0.011), along with the differential decay distribution in B --> Dl- nu(l) decays. We then determine G(1)|V(cb)| = (42.3+/-1.9+/-1.4)x10(-3) and rho2 = 1.20+/-0.09+/-0.04, where G(1) is the hadronic form factor at the point of zero recoil.

Search for invisible decays of the Upsilon(1S)

We search for invisible decays of the Upsilon(1S) meson using a sample of 91.4 x 10(6) Upsilon(3S) mesons collected at the BABAR/PEP-II B factory. We select events containing the decay Upsilon(3S) --> pi(+)pi(-)Upsilon(1S) and search for evidence of an undetectable Upsilon(1S) decay recoiling against the dipion system. We set an upper limit on the branching fraction B(Upsilon(1S) --> invisible) < 3.0 x 10(-4) at the 90% confidence level.

Precise measurement of the e+e- --> pi+pi-(gamma) cross section with the initial state radiation method at BABAR

A precise measurement of the cross section of the process e(+)e(-) --> pi(+)pi(-)(gamma) from threshold to an energy of 3 GeV is obtained with the initial state radiation (ISR) method using 232 fb(-1) of data collected with the BABAR detector at e(+)e(-) center-of-mass energies near 10.6 GeV. The ISR luminosity is determined from a study of the leptonic process e(+)e(-) --> mu(+)mu(-)gamma(gamma). The leading-order hadronic contribution to the muon magnetic anomaly calculated using the pipi cross section measured from threshold to 1.8 GeV is (514.1 +/- 2.2(stat) +/- 3.1(syst)) x 10(-10).

Measurement of B-->K{*}(892)gamma branching fractions and CP and Isospin asymmetries

We present an analysis of the decays B{0}-->K{*0}(892)gamma and B{+}-->K{*+}(892)gamma using a sample of about 383 x 10{6} BB[-over ] events collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric energy B factory. We measure the branching fractions B(B{0}-->K{*0}gamma)=(4.47+/-0.10+/-0.16) x 10{-5} and B(B{+}-->K{*+}gamma)=(4.22+/-0.14+/-0.16) x 10{-5}. We constrain the direct CP asymmetry to be -0.033<A(B-->K{*}gamma)<0.028 and the isospin asymmetry to be 0.017<Delta{0-} < 0.116, where the limits are determined by the 90% confidence interval and include both the statistical and systematic uncertainties.

Search for a low-mass higgs boson in Upsilon(3S)-->gammaA(0), A(0)-->tau(+)tau(-) at BABAR

We search for a light Higgs boson A0 in the radiative decay Upsilon(3S)-->gammaA(0), A(0)-->tau+tau-, tau+-->e+nu(e)nu(tau), or tau+-->mu+nu(mu)nu(tau). The data sample contains 122x10(6) Upsilon(3S) events recorded with the BABAR detector. We find no evidence for a narrow structure in the studied tau+tau- invariant mass region of 4.03<m(tau+tau-)<10.10 GeV/c2. We exclude at the 90% confidence level (C.L.) a low-mass Higgs boson decaying to tau+tau- with a product branching fraction B(Upsilon(3S)-->gammaA(0))xB(A(0)-->tau+tau-)>(1.5-16)x10(-5) across the m(tau+tau-) range. We also set a 90% C.L. upper limit on the tau+tau- decay of the eta(b) at B(eta(b)-->tau+tau-)<8%.

Evidence for the eta(b)(1S) meson in radiative Upsilon(2S) decay

We have performed a search for the eta_{b}(1S) meson in the radiative decay of the Upsilon(2S) resonance using a sample of 91.6x10(6) Upsilon(2S) events recorded with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II B factory at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. We observe a peak in the photon energy spectrum at Egamma=609.3(-4.5)(+4.6)(stat)+/-1.9(syst) MeV, corresponding to an eta(b)(1S) mass of 9394.2(-4.9)(+4.8)(stat)+/-2.0(syst) MeV/c2. The branching fraction for the decay Upsilon(2S)-->gamma(eta)b(1S) is determined to be [3.9+/-1.1(stat)-0.9+1.1(syst)]x10(-4). We find the ratio of branching fractions B[Upsilon(2S)-->gamma(eta)b(1S)]/B[Upsilon(3S)-->gamma(eta)b(1S)]=0.82+/-0.24(stat)(-0.19)(+0.20)(syst).

Search for dimuon decays of a light scalar boson in radiative transitions Upsilon-->gammaA0

We search for evidence of a light scalar boson in the radiative decays of the Upsilon(2S) and Upsilon(3S) resonances: Upsilon(2S,3S)-->gammaA0, A0-->mu+mu-. Such a particle appears in extensions of the standard model, where a light CP-odd Higgs boson naturally couples strongly to b quarks. We find no evidence for such processes in the mass range 0.212 < or = mA0 < or = 9.3 GeV in the samples of 99 x 10(6) Upsilon(2S) and 122 x 10(6) Upsilon(3S) decays collected by the BABAR detector at the SLAC PEP-II B factory and set stringent upper limits on the effective coupling of the b quark to the A0. We also limit the dimuon branching fraction of the etab meson: B(etab-->mu+mu-)<0.9% at 90% confidence level.

Measurement of semileptonic B decays into orbitally excited charmed mesons

We present a study of B decays into semileptonic final states containing charged and neutral D1(2420) and D_{2};{*}(2460). The analysis is based on a data sample of 208 fb;{-1} collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B factory at SLAC. With a simultaneous fit to four different decay chains, the semileptonic branching fractions are extracted from measurements of the mass difference Deltam=m(D;{**})-m(D) distributions. Product branching fractions are determined to be B(B;{+}-->D_{1};{0}l;{+}nu_{l})xB(D_{1};{0}-->D;{*+}pi;{-})=(2.97+/-0.17+/-0.17)x10;{-3}, B(B;{+}-->D_{2};{*0}l;{+}nu_{l})xB(D_{2};{*0}-->D;{(*)+}pi;{-})=(2.29+/-0.23+/-0.21)x10;{-3}, B(B;{0}-->D_{1};{-}l;{+}nu_{l})xB(D_{1};{-}-->D;{*0}pi;{-})=(2.78+/-0.24+/-0.25)x10;{-3} and B(B;{0}-->D_{2};{*-}l;{+}nu_{l})xB(D_{2};{*-}-->D;{(*)0}pi;{-})=(1.77+/-0.26+/-0.11)x10;{-3}. In addition we measure the branching ratio Gamma(D_{2};{*}-->Dpi;{-})/Gamma(D_{2};{*}-->D;{(*)}pi;{-})=0.62+/-0.03+/-0.02.

Search for second-class currents in tau;{-} --> omegapi;{-}nu_{tau}

We report an analysis of tau;{-} decaying into omegapi;{-}nu_{tau} with omega --> pi;{+}pi;{-}pi;{0} using a data sample containing nearly 320 x 10;{6}tau pairs collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II B-Factory. We find no evidence for second-class currents, and we set an upper limit of 0.69% at 90% confidence level for the fraction of second-class currents in this decay mode.

Improved limits on lepton-flavor-violating tau decays to lphi, lrho, lK, and lK

We search for the neutrinoless, lepton-flavor-violating tau decays tau- -->l-}V0, where l is an electron or muon and V0 is a vector meson reconstructed as phi-->K+K-, rho-->pi+pi-, K-->K+pi-, K[over ]-->K-pi+. The analysis has been performed using 451 fb-1 of data collected at an e+e- center-of-mass energy near 10.58 GeV with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II storage rings. The number of events found in the data is compatible with the background expectation, and upper limits on the branching fractions are set in the range (2.6-19)x10-8 at the 90% confidence level.

Measurement of B-->Xgamma decays and determination of |Vtd/Vts|

Using a sample of 383 x 10;{6} BB[over ] events collected by the BABAR experiment, we measure sums of seven exclusive final states B-->X_{d(s)}gamma, where X_{d}(X_{s}) is a nonstrange (strange) charmless hadronic system in the mass range 0.6-1.8 GeV/c;{2}. After correcting for unmeasured decay modes in this mass range, we obtain a branching fraction for b-->dgamma of (7.2+/-2.7(stat)+/-2.3(syst))x10;{-6}. Taking the ratio of X_{d} to X_{s} we find Gamma(b-->dgamma)/Gamma(b-->sgamma)=0.033+/-0.013(stat)+/-0.009(syst), from which we determine |V_{td}/V_{ts}|=0.177+/-0.043.

Improved measurement of B+ --> rho+ rho0 and determination of the quark-mixing phase angle alpha

We present improved measurements of the branching fraction B, the longitudinal polarization fraction f{L}, and the direct CP asymmetry A{CP} in the B meson decay channel B;{+}-->rho;{+}rho;{0}. The data sample was collected with the BABAR detector at SLAC. The results are B(B;{+}-->rho;{+}rho;{0})=(23.7+/-1.4+/-1.4) x 10;{-6}, f{L}=0.950+/-0.015+/-0.006, and A{CP}=-0.054+/-0.055+/-0.010, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. Based on these results, we perform an isospin analysis and determine the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa phase angle alpha=arg(-V{td}V{tb};/V{ud}V{ub}) to be (92.4{-6.5};{+6.0}) degrees.

Evidence for X(3872)-->psi(2S)gamma in B(+/-)-->X(3872)K(+/-) decays and a study of B-->cc[over ]gammaK

In a search for B-->cc[over ]gammaK decays with the BABAR detector, where cc[over ] includes J/psi and psi(2S), and K includes K(+/-), K(S)(0), and K(*)(892), we find evidence for X(3872)-->J/psigamma and X(3872)-->psi(2S)gamma with 3.6sigma and 3.5sigma significance, respectively. We measure the product of branching fractions B(B(+/-)-->X(3872)K(+/-))xB(X(3872)-->J/psigamma)=[2.8+/-0.8(stat)+/-0.1(syst)]x10(-6) and B(B(+/-)-->X(3872)K(+/-))xB(X(3872)-->psi(2S)gamma)=[9.5+/-2.7(stat)+/-0.6(syst)]x10(-6).

Measurement of the e;{+}e;{-}-->bb[over ] Cross Section between sqrt[s]=10.54 and 11.20 GeV

We report e;{+}e;{-}-->bb[over ] cross section measurements by the BABAR experiment performed during an energy scan in the range of 10.54 to 11.20 GeV at the SLAC PEP-II e;{+}e;{-} collider. A total relative error of about 5% is reached in more than 300 center-of-mass energy steps, separated by about 5 MeV. These measurements can be used to derive precise information on the parameters of the Upsilon(10860) and Upsilon(11020) resonances. In particular we show that their widths may be smaller than previously measured.

Observation of the bottomonium ground state in the decay Upsilon(3S)-->gammaetab

We report the results of a search for the bottomonium ground state etab(1S) in the photon energy spectrum with a sample of (109+/-1) million of Upsilon(3S) recorded at the Upsilon(3S) energy with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II B factory at SLAC. We observe a peak in the photon energy spectrum at Egamma=921.2(-2.8)+2.1(stat)+/-2.4(syst) MeV with a significance of 10 standard deviations. We interpret the observed peak as being due to monochromatic photons from the radiative transition Upsilon(3S)-->gammaetab(1S). This photon energy corresponds to an etab(1S) mass of 9388.9(-2.3)+3.1(stat)+/-2.7(syst) MeV/c2. The hyperfine Upsilon(1S)-etab(1S) mass splitting is 71.4(-3.1)+2.3(stat)+/-2.7(syst) MeV/c2. The branching fraction for this radiative Upsilon(3S) decay is estimated to be [4.8+/-0.5(stat)+/-1.2(syst)]x10(-4).

Free-living, amphizoic and opportunistic amebas

Amebas belonging to the genera Naegleria, Acanthamoeba and Balamuthia are free-living, amphizoic and opportunistic protozoa that are ubiquitous in nature. These amebas are found in soil, water and air samples from all over the world. Human infection due to these amebas involving brain, skin, lung and eyes has increased significantly during the last 10 years. The epidemiology, immunology, protozoology, pathology, and clinical features of the infections produced by these protozoa differ strikingly. Infection by the pathogenic Naegleria fowleri is acquired by exposure to polluted water in ponds, swimming pools and man-made lakes. Raised temperatures during the hot summer months or warm water from power plants facilitate the growth of N. fowleri. N. fowleri is a thermophilic ameba that grows well in tropical and subtropical climates. The CNS infection, called Primary Amebic Meningoencephalitis (PAM), produced by N. fowleri is characterized by an acute fulminant meningoencephalitis leading to death 3-7 days after exposure. Victims are healthy, young individuals with a history of recent water-related sport activities. The portal of entry is the olfactory neuroepithelium. The pathologic changes are an acute hemorrhagic necrotizing meningoencephalitis with modest purulent exudate, mainly at the base of the brain, brain-stem and cerebellum. Trophozoites can be seen within the CNS lesions located mainly around blood vessels. Thus far 179 cases have been reported; 81 in the USA alone. Balamuthia mandrillaris and several species of Acanthamoeba are pathogenic "opportunistic" free-living amebas which cause Granulomatous Amebic Encephalitis (GAE) in humans and animals. GAE is an infection, usually seen in debilitated, malnourished individuals, in patients undergoing immunosuppressive therapy for organ transplants and in Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS). The granulomatous component is negligible, particularly in immunocompromised individuals. Pathologically these amebas produce a patchy, chronic or subacute granulomatous encephalitis with the presence of trophozoites and cysts. The portal of entry is probably through the respiratory tract or an ulceration of the skin reaching the CNS by hematogenous spread. As of October 1, 1996, 166 cases (103 due to Acanthamoeba and 63 due to Balamuthia) of GAE have been reported from around the world. Of these 103 cases due to Acanthamoeba (72 have been reported in the USA alone, > 50 in AIDS). It is well known that several species of Acanthamoeba can also produce, chronic sight threatening ulceration of the cornea called Acanthamoeba keratitis (AK), mostly in contact lens wearers or in individuals with minor corneal abrasions. Hundreds of cases of AK have been documented world wide.

Microdissection genotyping of mixed glial and primitive neuroectodermal central nervous system neoplasm

A 22-year-old man with previous radiation treatment for childhood astrocytoma underwent resection of a right parietooccipital lesion. Histopathology revealed a malignant neoplasm with areas of astrocytic and primitive neuroectodermal components. To resolve the relationship and cellular origin, representative tissue was microdissected from several targets, obtaining a balanced mixture of each element. Nonneoplastic brain parenchyma was separately microdissected to determine polymorphic marker informativeness and to serve as an internal negative control. Despite the relatively small quantity of tissue removed for each microdissection target, sufficient material was available for reliable, balanced, polymerase chain reaction-format genotyping encompassing a panel of tumor suppressor genes and genetic loci associated with these forms of neoplasia. The findings revealed distinct discordant genotypic profiles for each of the neoplastic components. The efficacy of the approach used for molecular analysis of this complex neoplasm and the implication of the genotypic findings are discussed.

Environmental isolation of Balamuthia mandrillaris associated with a case of amebic encephalitis

This report describes the first isolation of the ameba Balamuthia mandrillaris from an environmental soil sample associated with a fatal case of amebic encephalitis in a northern California child. Isolation of the ameba into culture from autopsied brain tissue confirmed the presence of Balamuthia: In trying to locate a possible source of infection, soil and water samples from the child's home and play areas were examined for the presence of Balamuthia: The environmental samples (plated onto nonnutrient agar with Escherichia coli as a food source) contained, in addition to the ameba, a variety of soil organisms, including other amebas, ciliates, fungi, and nematodes, as contaminants. Presumptive Balamuthia amebas were recognized only after cultures had been kept for several weeks, after they had burrowed into the agar. These were transferred through a succession of nonnutrient agar plates to eliminate fungal and other contaminants. In subsequent transfers, axenic Naegleria amebas and, later, tissue cultures (monkey kidney cells) served as the food source. Finally, the amebas were transferred to cell-free axenic medium. In vitro, the Balamuthia isolate is a slow-growing organism with a generation time of approximately 30 h and produces populations of approximately 2 x 10(5) amebas per ml. It was confirmed as Balamuthia by indirect immunofluorescence staining with rabbit anti-Balamuthia serum and human anti-Balamuthia antibody-containing serum from the amebic encephalitis patient. The environmental isolate is similar in its antimicrobial sensitivities and identical in its 16S ribosomal DNA sequences to the Balamuthia isolate from the deceased patient.

Presence of occult cytomegalovirus infection in the brain after orthotopic liver transplantation. An autopsy study of 83 cases

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection remains a highly prevalent systemic complication following orthotopic liver transplantation (LT), accounting for a significant increase in morbidity and affiliated costs. However, unlike other immunosuppressed groups of population, CMV infection of the central nervous system in LT is rarely diagnosed, either clinically or postmortem. Furthermore, in 20% of the LT patients who develop preterminal neurological complications, the etiology remains undetermined. With the hypothesis that at least some of these cases could be related to an occult CMV infection, we examined brain tissue from 83 unselected autopsies of LT patients by morphological, immunohistochemical (IHC), in situ hybridization (ISH), and nested polymerase chain reaction (nested PCR) techniques. Microglial nodules were observed in 17 brains of the LT group (20.4%) but in none of the 36 controls. Isolated positive cells by either IHC, ISH, or both techniques, were identified in 11 LT patients (13.2%) and in 2 controls (5.5%). CMV DNA amplification was obtained from paraffin-embedded tissues in 41 of 81 LT cases (50.6%), and in 5 controls (13.8%) (P=0.00017). Viral inclusion bodies, inflammatory infiltrates, or necrotizing changes were not identified in any case. Our findings indicate an increased susceptibility of the brain of LT patients to occult infection by CMV and suggest that a latent or low-grade infection of the central nervous system could operate as a reservoir of the CMV and play a role in some of the unexplained neurological symptoms that appear in the postoperative period.

Lack of toxicity to adults of the Mexican fruit fly (Diptera: Tephritidae) of beta-exotoxin in Bacillus thuringiensis endotoxin preparations

beta-Exotoxin (thuringiensin) was found in high titers in centrifugation supernatants and acetone/lactose powders produced from centrifugation pellets of strains Guat 1 and HD 2 of Bacillus thuringiensis (Berliner). Diets containing powders of either strain were toxic, diets containing Guat 1 supernatant were not toxic, diets containing HD 2 supernatant were slightly toxic, and diets containing powders or supernatants from uninoculated culturing medium spiked with beta-exotoxin were not toxic. Most mortality occurred within 3 d when flies fed on powders but not until 6-7 d when flies fed on HD 2 supernatant. These results indicated that the primary toxic principals of the powders were endotoxins/spores and that beta-exotoxin alone was not toxic to adult flies at the concentrations found in the supernatants or powders.

Use of cytological preparations for the intraoperative diagnosis of stereotactically obtained brain biopsies: a 19-year experience and survey of neuropathologists

OBJECT

The goals of this study were to analyze the accuracy of cytological techniques, consisting of touch and smear preparations, for the intraoperative diagnosis of stereotactically obtained brain biopsy samples, and to determine the prevalence of the use of these methods among neuropathologists.

METHODS

A survey regarding preferred methods for intraoperative diagnosis of stereotactically obtained brain biopsy samples was completed by 92 (62%) of 148 neuropathologists. Twenty-three percent of respondents chose frozen-section examination alone; 13% chose one or more cytological methods alone; and the remainder (64%) chose a combination of frozen-section examination and cytology. At the University of Pittsburgh, the neuropathology records for all stereotactic brain biopsies performed from May 1979 through May 1998 were retrospectively reviewed. Of the 946 stereotactic brain biopsies, 316 cases were excluded because the intraoperative neuropathological consultation was not recorded. Thirty-five cases were excluded because frozen-section examinations were performed. Therefore, a total of 595 cases were suitable for analysis. Intraoperative cytological investigation correlated with the final diagnosis in 90% of cases (52% complete correlation and 38% partial correlation). In 11% of cases there was no correlation between the intraoperative and final diagnoses. Intraoperative diagnoses were most accurate in cases of abscess, germinoma, lymphoma, metastasis, and malignant glioma. Overall, 91% of biopsy specimens were diagnostic when examined using the paraffin-embedded section technique. The sensitivity of cytological preparations in detecting a diagnostic specimen was 96% and the specificity in detecting a nondiagnostic specimen was 75%.

CONCLUSIONS

Intraoperative cytological preparations correlated with the final diagnoses in 90% of stereotactic biopsies and had a 96% sensitivity in detecting diagnostic specimens. The highest rate of correlation was noted in cases of abscess, germinoma, lymphoma, metastasis, and malignant glial tumor.

The neuropathology of intestinal failure and small bowel transplantation

The aim of this study was to elucidate the neuropathological substrate of intestinal failure before and after small bowel transplantation (SBT). Retrospective analysis of complete autopsy or brain biopsy specimens of 17 patients with intestinal failure (12 children and 5 adults) were studied. Patients were divided into two groups. Group I (transplanted group; n = 13) included those patients who underwent intestinal transplantation under tacrolimus and steroids immunosuppressive therapy. Group II (control group) included 4 children with intestinal failure who were candidates for SBT and died while awaiting an intestinal allograft. Central nervous system (CNS) abnormalities were seen in 92% of the SBT recipients and in 100% of SBT candidates. The neuropathological lesions of SBT recipients included: (a) vascular lesions: global brain ischemia, infarcts, intracranial hemorrhage and edema (7 children/2 adults; 69%); (b) cerebral atrophy (6 children; 46%); (c) Alzheimer type II gliosis (5 children/4 adults; 69%); (d) infection (3 patients; 23%) due to cytomegalovirus (1 child), Aspergillus fumigatus (1 adult) and progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML)-like (1 adult); (e) Epstein-Barr virus-related cerebral post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder (2 children; 15%); and (f) central pontine and extrapontine myelinolysis (1 child; 7.5%). The neuropathological lesions of SBT candidates were Alzheimer type II astrocytosis (4 patients), vascular changes (4 patients), brain atrophy (4 patients) and cerebral candidiasis (1 patient). CNS vascular, metabolic and infectious pathology are significant causes of morbidity and mortality in patients suffering intestinal failure, both before and after SBT. Brain atrophy was a frequent finding and may be related to nutritional and developmental inadequacy of long-term total parenteral nutrition.

Beneficial effects of the radioprotectant 21-aminosteroid U-74389G in a radiosurgery rat malignant glioma model

PURPOSE

To evaluate the radioprotectant effects of the 21-aminosteroid U-74389G on the rat C6 glioma model after stereotactic radiosurgery. Because radiosurgery causes both tumor cytotoxicity, as well as regional brain edema, we hypothesized that this drug might exhibit advantageous or deleterious effects on healthy and neoplastic tissue.

METHODS

Rats were implanted with 10(6) C6 glioma cells into the right frontal brain and randomized to a Control Group (n = 18), radiosurgery on Day 14 (50% isodose = 35 Gy) (n = 15), or radiosurgery preceded by a single 15 mg/kg intravenous dose of 21-aminosteroid (n = 27). All animals were killed by 90 days and evaluated for survival, tumor size, the presence or absence of regional parenchymal edema, or radiation-induced vasculopathy.

RESULTS

After tumor implantation, median survival in the Control Group was 23 days. Significant improvements in median survival were noted after RS alone (median, 31 days; p = 0.02), and RS plus 21-aminosteroid (median, 59 days; p < 0.0001). In the Control Group, mean tumor diameter was 5.4 mm. After RS alone, the mean diameter was 3.2 mm (p = 0.002), and after RS plus 21-aminosteroid, 2.9 mm (p = 0.0002). In the Control Group, the tumor grew as a hypercellular, compact mass. Only 3 of 18 animals had peritumoral edema. In contrast, 7 of 15 animals in the RS group had evidence of edema (p = 0.006), but rats that received 21-aminosteroid showed no increase compared to controls (p = 0.38). Similarly, 6 of 15 animals that had radiosurgery alone showed evidence of vasculopathy (p = 0.005) compared to no animals in the control group and only 2 of 27 aminosteroid-treated animals.

CONCLUSIONS

The 21-aminosteroid U-74389G exhibits a radioprotectant effect on normal brain tissue, but does not appear to protect the tumor in an in vivo rat radiosurgery model. We believe that the observed beneficial effects on healthy brain led to significant prolongation of animal survival; perhaps, by limiting the adverse effects of high-dose radiosurgery. This radioprotectant should now be evaluated in randomized clinical trials in patients with malignant brain tumors.

Reductions in brain phosphatidylinositol kinase activities in Alzheimer's disease

BACKGROUND

Converging lines of evidence suggest that alterations in the intracellular trafficking of the amyloid precursor protein, its derivatives, and other relevant proteins may contribute to the pathophysiology of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Since phosphatidylinositol (PI) kinase plays a pivotal role in the sorting and transport of newly synthesized proteins to their final destinations, we explored the hypothesis that AD is associated with alterations in the specific activities of these enzymes in postmortem brain tissue.

METHODS

The specific activities of soluble and particulate pools of PI 3-kinase and PI 4-kinase from the frontal cortex were compared between 11 cases with histopathologically confirmed AD and 11 nondemented controls matched for sex, race, age at death, and postmortem interval. Potential associations of these activities with sociodemographic and clinical features were also explored.

RESULTS

AD was associated with 43-59% reductions in the specific activities of the soluble forms of both lipid kinases; but no significant change in the specific activities of the particulate species. Associations of these specific activities with sex, age at onset or death, duration of illness, postmortem interval, or densities of morphologic lesions in the frontal cortex were not observed among the 11 AD cases.

CONCLUSIONS

In addition to regulating protein sorting and trafficking, PI kinases participate in a wide range of cellular processes including protection from apoptosis, differentiation and cell growth, regulation of the cytoskeleton, and glucose metabolism. The results of this study suggest that one or more of these alterations in AD may result from a common abnormality in PI kinase regulation.

Prospective study of risk factors for Alzheimer's disease: results at 7.5 years

OBJECTIVE

The primary goal of this study was to evaluate increased platelet membrane fluidity as a putative risk factor for Alzheimer's disease and its relationship to the APOE epsilon4 genotype.

METHOD

This report describes the results of a prospective, longitudinal study of 330 initially asymptomatic, first-degree relatives of probands with Alzheimer's disease.

RESULTS

Nine incident cases of Alzheimer's disease were detected during the first 2,220 subject-years of the follow-up period. Age, increased platelet membrane fluidity, and the APOE epsilon4 allele made significant independent contributions to the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease, while sex and years of education did not. Increased platelet membrane fluidity was associated with incident Alzheimer's disease cases between the ages of 64 and 71, while the epsilon4 allele was associated with incident Alzheimer's disease cases from age 64 until at least age 80.

CONCLUSIONS

These results indicate that increased platelet membrane fluidity is not produced by the APOE epsilon4 allele. Instead, increased platelet membrane fluidity and the epsilon4 allele appear to make significant independent contributions to the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease among the first-degree relatives of patients with this disorder. Moreover, the age ranges over which these risk factors operate appear to be different.

Radiotherapy for nonfunctional pituitary adenoma: analysis of long-term tumor control

OBJECT

The authors studied outcomes in patients who had undergone radiotherapy for nonfunctional pituitary adenoma to assess long-term tumor control and to identify factors affecting tumor control such as higher radiation doses, improved imaging, and histological characteristics of the tumor.

METHODS

In this retrospective study, the authors evaluated 120 patients who received radiotherapy for nonfunctional pituitary adenomas between 1960 and 1991. The median follow-up period was 9 years (range 1 month-32 years). Radiation doses varied between 37.6 and 65.6 Gy (median 46.7 Gy). Tumors progressed in 15 of the 120 patients by 1 to 25 years after radiotherapy. Actuarial tumor control rates at 10, 20, and 30 years were 87.5+/-3.6%, 77.6+/-6.3%, and 64.7+/-12.9%, respectively. Tumor progression after radiotherapy occurred significantly more often (p=0.0397) in patients with oncocytoma than in patients with nononcocytic null cell adenoma. No other factors correlated significantly with tumor control. One case of optic and oculomotor neuropathy developed 4.5 years after a maximum dose of 50 Gy in 25 fractions. Radiation-induced neoplasms (meningioma and glioblastoma multiforme) developed at a rate of 2.7% at 10 and 30 years.

CONCLUSIONS

The oncocytic variant of null cell pituitary adenoma appears less sensitive to control by radiotherapy than nononcocytic undifferentiated cell adenoma. A follow-up period extending beyond 20 years is needed adequately to assess the efficacy of radiotherapy for tumor control. Doses of 40 or 45 Gy in 20 or 25 fractions, respectively, appear optimal.

Death from a malignant cerebellopontine angle triton tumor despite stereotactic radiosurgery. Case report

Malignant vestibular nerve tumors are rare: to date, only three cases have been reported in the literature. The authors report a case of an eighth cranial nerve tumor that progressed 5 years after stereotactic radiosurgery. The patient was a 44-year-old man who underwent stereotactic radiosurgery for a 27-mm cerebellopontine angle tumor that was discovered on investigation of tinnitus and hearing loss. He developed facial weakness after 5 years, and repeated imaging revealed tumor enlargement. Despite complete microsurgical excision, the tumor rapidly recurred locally and subsequently disseminated within the neuraxis. The patient died 1 year after tumor progression was detected. Histopathological analysis revealed a malignant spindle cell neoplasm with frequent mitotic figures. The presence of positive rhabdoid elements on immunohistochemical studies confirmed that it was a triton tumor. The authors review the relevant literature concerning the classification and management of malignant vestibular nerve tumors and discuss the implications of tumor progression after stereotactic radiosurgery.

Expression of retinoic acid, triiodothyronine, and glucocorticoid hormone nuclear receptors is decreased in the liver of rats fed a hypercholesterolemia-inducing diet

Several studies have shown that dietary factors modulate cell signaling pathways. The aim of this study was to determine whether a hypercholesterolemia-inducing diet rich in saturated fat and cholesterol modifies rat liver expression of the nuclear receptors of retinoic acid (RAR), triiodothyronine (TR), and glucocorticoid hormone (GR), which are transcriptional factors. The experimental diet contained coconut oil 25 g/100 g as a source of lipids, cholesterol 1 g/100 g, and cholic acid 0.5 g/100 g, and the control diet contained olive oil 5 g/100 g. After 26 days of feeding the hypercholesterolemia-inducing diet, a lower binding capacity of the nuclear receptors and a smaller amount of their mRNA were observed. Moreover, the activities of malic enzyme (ME) and tyrosine aminotransferase (TAT), whose gene promotors contain a response element to TR and GR, respectively, were significantly decreased. These changes occurred in a cellular environment characterized by a high level of cholesterol and free fatty acids (FFAs). Thus, two nonexclusive hypotheses can be proposed to explain this decreased expression of nuclear receptors, one emphasizing the effect of lipidic components on the cellular amount of receptor ligands (retinoic acid [RA] and triiodothyronine [T3]), the other emphasizing a modification of the balance between nuclear receptors that could impede the upregulation of TR and RAR.

Case of the month: September 1997--a 26 year old woman with new onset seizures

A twenty-six year old, previously healthy nurse presented with new onset of seizures and was given a clinical diagnosis of herpes simplex encephalitis. After treatment with acyclovir there was incomplete resolution of the lesions by MRI scans and within a few months the patient's neurologic symptoms worsened, prompting a stereotactic biopsy. A diagnosis of progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) was made using electron microscopy, and in situ hybridization studies. Subsequent to this biopsy, she was shown to be infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and had a CD4 T-cell count of 63. She had no known risk factors for HIV infections and had been tested as recently as eighteen months previously during her pregnancy. Neither the husband nor the child were positive for HIV. PML as a presenting sign of HIV infection is rare.

Radioprotective effects of the 21-aminosteroid U-74389G for stereotactic radiosurgery

OBJECTIVE

Future improvements in the results of stereotactic radiosurgery will be related to better patient selection, dose planning, radiosensitization of the target, and, possibly, protection of the brain surrounding the target. 21-Aminosteroids may provide protection against brain radiation injury by inhibition of lipid peroxidation and a selective action on vascular endothelium. We hypothesized that the 21-aminosteroid U-74389G would reduce radiosurgery-related brain injury without attenuating the target volume response.

METHODS

One hundred and forty-five rats were divided into four experimental groups before undergoing radiosurgery: control (n = 47); low-dose U-74389G (5 mg/kg of body weight, n = 30); high-dose U-74389G (15 mg/kg, n = 20); and methylprednisolone (2 mg/kg, n = 48). The drug was administered 1 hour before radiosurgery (4-mm gamma knife collimator) of the normal rat frontal lobe (single-fraction maximum doses of 50, 100, or 150 Gy) was performed. All brains underwent histological examination at 90 or 150 days to evaluate the diameters of necrosis and the findings of radiation-induced vasculopathy, brain edema, and gliosis.

RESULTS

None of the animals that received 50-Gy radiation developed histological changes, whereas all of the animals that received 150-Gy radiation developed radiation necrosis without drug-induced protection from vascular changes or edema. In animals receiving 100-Gy radiation, high-dose aminosteroid reduced radiation-induced vasculopathy at 90 days (P = 0.06) and at 150 days (P = 0.02) and prevented regional edema at 90 days (P = 0.01) and at 150 days (P = 0.03). Low-dose aminosteroid and corticosteroid provided no protection.

CONCLUSION

The 21-aminosteroid U-74389G provided protection after a single intravenously administered dose of 15 mg/kg against radiation-induced vasculopathy and edema. High-dose 21-aminosteroids seem to have optimal properties for radiosurgery, surrounding brain protection without reducing the therapeutic effect desired within the target volume.

Spinal cord astrocytomas: long-term results comparing treatments in children

Technology enabling radical resection has expanded treatment options for children with spinal cord astrocytomas. Comparison of long-term survival and neurological function after complete tumor removal with more conservative treatment may determine whether radical surgery can improve outcome in well-differentiated and anaplastic spinal cord astrocytomas. In all, 18 children with spinal cord astrocytomas were initially treated between 1976 and 1992 with biopsy in 6, subtotal removal in 7, and complete resection in 5. Seven had anaplastic tumors. Nine children treated before 1988 received radiotherapy. Survival after a median follow-up of 11 years was 82% (9/11). Five patients with anaplastic tumors are alive between 12 and 18 years after treatment. No patient relapsed after total resection, whereas more than two-thirds treated with other than complete resection relapsed within 3 years (P = 0.029). All but 1 patient with symptomatic relapse received radiotherapy (P = 0.059). Magnetic resonance imaging more than 3 years postoperatively showed no recurrences in 13 of the 15 survivors and asymptomatic progression in the other 2. Although excellent long-term survival was seen, frequent relapse was associated with either incomplete resection or radiotherapy. Prolonged relapse-free survival was observed in all patients treated with complete resection, including 3 with anaplastic tumors.
